Abstract:We study the transport properties of underdoped trilayer cuprate HgBa 2 Ca 2 Cu 3 O 8+ δ with doping level p = 0.10–0.12 in magnetic field up to 88 T. We report for the first time in a cuprate superconductor a dramatic change of the quantum oscillation spectrum versus temperature, which is accompanied by a sign change of the Hall effect below T ≈10 K. Based on numerical simulations, we infer a Fermi surface reconstruction in the inner plane from an antiferromagnetic state (hole pockets) to a biaxial charge density wave state (electron pockets). We show that both orders compete and share the same hotspots of the Fermi surface, and we discuss our result in the context of spin-fermion models.

Abstract:There exists increasing evidence that the phase diagram of the high-transition temperature (Tc) cuprate superconductors is controlled by a quantum critical point. According to one distinct theoretical proposal, on decreasing the hole-carrier concentration a transition occurs to an ordered state with two circulating orbital currents per CuO2 square. Below the ‘pseudogap’ temperature T*(T*>Tc), the theory predicts a discrete order parameter and two weakly-dispersive magnetic excitations in structurally simple compounds which should be measurable by neutron scattering. Indeed, novel magnetic order and one such excitation were recently observed. Here, we demonstrate for tetragonal HgBa2CuO4+δ the existence of a second excitation with local character, consistent with the theory. The excitations mix with conventional antiferromagnetic fluctuations, which points towards a unifying picture of magnetism in the cuprates that will probably require a multi-band description. The magnetic character of the cuprates is suspected by many to be involved in the emergence of unconventional superconductivity. The discovery of a second distinct magnetic excitation in HgBa2CuO4 supports a multiband picture of the magnetic structure of these materials.

Abstract: The extremely overdoped cuprates are generally considered to be Fermi liquid metals without exotic orders, whereas the underdoped cuprates harbor intertwined states. Contrary to this conventional wisdom, using Cu $L_3$ edge and O $K$ edge resonant x-ray scattering, we reveal a charge order (CO) in overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (0.35 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.6) beyond the superconducting dome. This CO has a periodicity of $\sim$ 6 lattice units with correlation lengths of $\sim 3 - 20$ lattice units. It shows similar in-plane momentum and polarization dependence and dispersive excitations as the CO of underdoped cuprates, but its maximum intensity differs along the c-direction and persists up to 300 K. This CO cannot be explained by either the Fermi surface instability or the doped Hubbard model and its origin remains to be understood. Our results suggest that CO is prevailing in the overdoped metallic regime and superconductivity emerges out of the CO phase upon decreasing hole carriers.

Abstract:Copper oxide high-TC superconductors possess a number of exotic orders that coexist with or are proximal to superconductivity. Quantum fluctuations associated with these orders may account for the unusual characteristics of the normal state, and possibly affect the superconductivity<a href="#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="#ref-CR3">3</a>,<a href="/articles/s41567-020-0993-7#ref-CR4">4</a>. Yet, spectroscopic evidence for such quantum fluctuations remains elusive. Here, we use resonant inelastic X-ray scattering to reveal spectroscopic evidence of fluctuations associated with a charge order<a href="#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="#ref-CR7">7</a>,<a href="#ref-CR8">8</a>,<a href="#ref-CR9">9</a>,<a href="#ref-CR10">10</a>,<a href="#ref-CR11">11</a>,<a href="#ref-CR12">12</a>,<a href="#ref-CR13">13</a>,<a href="/articles/s41567-020-0993-7#ref-CR14">14</a> in nearly optimally doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ. In the superconducting state, while the quasielastic charge order signal decreases with temperature, the interplay between charge order fluctuations and bond-stretching phonons in the form of a Fano-like interference increases, an observation that is incompatible with expectations for competing orders. Invoking general principles, we argue that this behaviour reflects the properties of a dissipative system near an order–disorder quantum critical point, where the dissipation varies with the opening of the pseudogap and superconducting gap at low temperatures, leading to the proliferation of quantum critical fluctuations, which melt charge order.

Abstract:Heterostructures from complex oxides allow one to combine various electronic and magnetic orders as to induce new quantum states. A prominent example is the coupling between superconducting and magnetic orders in multilayers from high-Tc cuprates and manganites. A key role is played here by the interfacial CuO2 layer whose distinct properties remain to be fully understood. Here, we study with resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) the magnon excitations of this interfacial CuO2 layer. In particular, we show that the underlying antiferromagnetic exchange interaction at the interface is strongly suppressed to J ~ 70 meV, as compared to J ~ 130 meV for the CuO2 layers away from the interface. Moreover, we observe an anomalous momentum dependence of the intensity of the interfacial magnon mode and show that it suggests that the antiferromagnetic order is accompanied by a particular kind of orbital order that yields a so-called altermagnetic state. Such a two-dimensional altermagnet has recently been predicted to enable new spintronic applications and superconducting proximity effects.

Abstract:Spin-polarized neutron diffraction experiments have revealed an unusual q = 0 magnetic order in the model high-temperature superconductor HgBa2CuO4+delta (Hg1201) below the pseudogap temperature T* [Y. Li et al., Nature (London) 455, 372 (2008)]. Together with results for the structurally more complex compound YBa2Cu3O6+delta (YBCO) [B. Fauque et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 197001 (2006); H. A. Mook et al., Phys. Rev. B 78, 020506 (2008)], this establishes the universal existence of a genuine novel magnetic phase in underdoped cuprates with high maximal T-c (above 90 K at optimal doping). Here we report a systematic study of an underdoped Hg1201 sample (T-c = 75 K), the result of which is consistent with the previously established doping dependence of the magnetic signal. We present an assumption-free analysis of all the data available for Hg1201. Depending on how the hole concentration is estimated, comparison with the results for YBCO leads to different scenarios for the competition between the q = 0 magnetic order and the spin-density-wave order found in heavily underdoped YBCO.
Gapped commensurate antiferromagnetic response in a strongly underdoped model cuprate superconductor

Abstract:It is a distinct possibility that spin fluctuations are the pairing interactions in a wide range of unconventional superconductors. In the case of the high-transition-temperature (high-$T_c$) cuprates, in which superconductivity emerges upon doping an antiferromagnetic Mott-insulating state, spin correlations might furthermore drive unusual pseudogap phenomena. Here we use polarized and unpolarized magnetic neutron scattering to study the simple tetragonal cuprate $\mathrm{HgBa}_{2}\mathrm{CuO}_{4+\delta}$ at very low doping ($T_c \approx 55$ K, hole concentration $p \approx 0.064$). In stark contrast to prior results for other underdoped cuprates, we find no evidence of incommensurate spin-density-wave, charge-spin stripe, or $q = 0$ magnetic order. Instead, the antiferromagnetic response in both the superconducting and pseudogap states is gapped below $\Delta_\mathrm{AF} \approx 6$ meV, commensurate over a wide energy range, and disperses above about 55 meV. Given the documented model nature of $\mathrm{HgBa}_{2}\mathrm{CuO}_{4+\delta}$, which exhibits high structural symmetry and minimal point disorder effects, we conclude that the observed behavior signifies the unmasked response of the quintessential $\mathrm{CuO}_{2}$ planes near the Mott-insulating state. These results for $\mathrm{HgBa}_{2}\mathrm{CuO}_{4+\delta}$ can therefore be expected to serve as a benchmark for a refined theoretical understanding of the cuprates.

Abstract:Antiferromagnetic (AF) spin fluctuations are commonly believed to play a key role in electron pairing of cuprate superconductors. In electron-doped cuprates, a paradox still exists about the interplay among different electronic states in quantum perturbations, especially between superconducting and magnetic states. Here, we report a systematic transport study of cation-optimized La2−xCexCuO4±δ (x=0.10) thin films in high magnetic fields. We find an AF quantum phase transition near 60 T, where the Hall number jumps from nH=−x to nH=1−x, resembling the change in nH at the AF boundary (xAF=0.14) tuned by Ce doping. In the AF region a spin-dependent state manifesting anomalous positive magnetoresistance is observed, which is closely related to superconductivity. Once the AF state is suppressed by magnetic field, a polarized ferromagnetic state is predicted, reminiscent of the recently reported ferromagnetic state at the quantum end point of the superconducting dome by Ce doping. The magnetic field that drives phase transitions in a manner similar to but distinct from doping thereby provides a unique perspective to understand the quantum criticality of electron-doped cuprates.

Abstract:The interplay between superconducting fluctuations and inhomogeneities presents a renewed interest due to recent works supporting an anomalous [beyond the conventional Gaussian-Ginzburg-Landau (GGL) scenario] diamagnetism above Tc in underdoped cuprates. This conclusion, mainly based in the observation of new anomalies in the low-field isothermal magnetization curves, is in contradiction with our earlier results in the underdoped La(1.9)Sr(0.1)CuO(4) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 3157 (2000)]. These seemingly intrinsic anomalies are being presented in various influential works as a 'thermodynamic evidence' for phase incoherent superconductivity in the pseudogap regime, this last being at present a central and debated issue of the cuprate superconductors' physics. Here we have extended our magnetization measurements in La(1.9)Sr(0.1)CuO(4) to two samples with different chemical disorder, in one of them close to the one associated with the random distribution of Sr ions. For this sample, the corresponding Tc-distribution may be approximated as symmetric around the average Tc, while in the most disordered sample is strongly asymmetric. The comparison between the magnetization measured in both samples provides a crucial check of the chemical disorder origin of the observed diamagnetism anomalies, which are similar to those claimed as due to phase fluctuations by other authors. This conclusion applies also to the sample affected only by the intrinsic-like chemical disorder, providing then a further check that the intrinsic diamagnetism above the superconducting transition of underdoped cuprates is not affected by the opening of a pseudogap in the normal state. It is also shown here that once these disorder effects are overcome, the remaining precursor diamagnetism may be accounted at a quantitative level in terms of the GGL approach under a total energy cutoff.

Abstract:Charge order is now accepted as an integral constituent of cuprate high-temperature superconductors, one that is intimately related to other instabilities in the phase diagram including antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. Unlike nesting-induced Peierls-like density waves, the charge correlations in the CuO2 planes have been predicted to display a rich momentum space topology depending on the detailed fermiology of the system. However, to date charge order has only been observed along the high-symmetry Cu-O bond directions. Here, using resonant soft X-ray scattering, we investigate the evolution of the full momentum space topology of charge correlations in Ln2CuO4 (Ln=Nd, Pr) as a function of intrinsic electron doping. We report that, upon electron doping the parent Mott insulator, charge correlations first emerge in a hitherto-unobserved form, with full (Cinf) rotational symmetry in momentum-space. At higher doping levels, the orientation of charge correlations is sharply locked to the Cu-O bond high-symmetry directions, restoring a more conventional bidirectional charge order with enhanced correlation lengths. Through charge susceptibility calculations, we closely reproduce the drastic evolution in the topology of charge correlations across an antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition, highlighting the interplay between spin and charge degrees of freedom in electron-doped cuprates. Finally, using the established link between charge correlations and the underlying fermiology, we propose a revised phase diagram of Ln2CuO4 with a superconducting region extending toward the Mott limit.

Bogoliubov Quasiparticle on the Gossamer Fermi Surface in Electron-Doped Cuprates

Abstract:In contrast to hole-doped cuprates, electron-doped cuprates consistently exhibit strong antiferromagnetic correlations with a commensurate ({\pi}, {\pi}) ordering wave vector, leading to the prevalent belief that antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations mediate Cooper pairing in these unconventional superconductors. However, early investigations produced two paradoxical findings: while antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations create the largest pseudogap at "hot spots" in momentum space, Raman scattering and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements using the leading-edge method seem to suggest the superconducting gap is also maximized at these locations. This presented a dilemma for spin-fluctuation-mediated pairing: Cooper pairing is strongest at momenta where normal state low energy spectral weight is most suppressed. Here we investigate this dilemma in Nd2-xCexCuO4 using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy under significantly improved experimental conditions. The unprecedented signal-to-noise ratio and resolution allow us to directly observe the Bogoliubov quasiparticles, demonstrating the existence and importance of two sectors of states: 1. The reconstructed main band and the states gapped by the antiferromagnetic pseudogap around the hot spots. 2. The gossamer Fermi surface states with distinct dispersion inside the pseudogap, from which Bogoliubov quasiparticle coherence peaks emerge below Tc. Supported by numerical results, we propose that the non-zero modulus of the antiferromagnetic order parameter causes the former, while fluctuations in the antiferromagnetic order parameter orientation are responsible for the latter. Our revelations of the gossamer Fermi surface reconcile the paradoxical observations, deepening our understanding of superconductivity in electron-doped cuprates in particular, and unconventional superconductivity in general.

Coexistence of Enhanced Superconductivity and Antiferromagnetism: Possible Correlated Phase Transitions in Trilayer High-Tc Cuprates

Abstract:Based on a hybrid interlayer coupling mechanism, we study the coexistence of superconductivity (SC) and antiferromagnetism (AFM) in trilayer cuprates. By introducing an interlayer magnetic scattering term, we solve the multilayer t-J model with Josephson coupling under the framework of Gutzwiller projection. We show that both the SC and AFM orders in the multilayered system are enhanced and the range of AFM order is extended. The layer configuration of d-wave pairing gap and AFM order further plays an essential role in determining the interlayer magnetic and superconducting coupling phase diagram of such multilayered systems. Abrupt phase transitions between correlated states carrying distinct configurational symmetries are unveiled by tuning the doping level and/or the tunneling strengths.
Hidden magnetic excitation in the pseudogap phase of a model cuprate superconductor

Abstract:The elucidation of the pseudogap phenomenon of the cuprates, a set of anomalous physical properties below the characteristic temperature T* and above the superconducting transition temperature Tc, has been a major challenge in condensed matter physics for the past two decades. Following initial indications of broken time-reversal symmetry in photoemission experiments, recent polarized neutron diffraction work demonstrated the universal existence of an unusual magnetic order below T*. These findings have the profound implication that the pseudogap regime constitutes a genuine new phase of matter rather than a mere crossover phenomenon. They are furthermore consistent with a particular type of order involving circulating orbital currents, and with the notion that the phase diagram is controlled by a quantum critical point. Here we report inelastic neutron scattering results for HgBa2CuO4+x (Hg1201) that reveal a fundamental collective magnetic mode associated with the unusual order, and that further support this picture. The mode's intensity rises below the same temperature T* and its dispersion is weak, as expected for an Ising-like order parameter. Its energy of 52-56 meV and its enormous integrated spectral weight render it a new candidate for the hitherto unexplained ubiquitous electron-boson coupling features observed in spectroscopic studies.

Abstract:Besides superconductivity, copper-oxide high-temperature superconductors are susceptible to other types of ordering. We used scanning tunneling microscopy and resonant elastic x-ray scattering measurements to establish the formation of charge ordering in the high-temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x. Depending on the hole concentration, the charge ordering in this system occurs with the same period as those found in Y-based or La-based cuprates and displays the analogous competition with superconductivity. These results indicate the similarity of charge organization competing with superconductivity across different families of cuprates. We observed this charge ordering to leave a distinct electron-hole asymmetric signature (and a broad resonance centered at +20 milli-electron volts) in spectroscopic measurements, indicating that it is likely related to the organization of holes in a doped Mott insulator.
Magnetic-field-induced Stripe Order and Two-Dimensional Superconductivity in a High-Tc Superconductor

Abstract:We present an experimental study of the anisotropic resistivity of superconducting La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) with x=0.095 and transition temperature Tc=32 K. In a magnetic field perpendicular to the CuO(2) layers, H(perp), we observe that the resistivity perpendicular to the layers, \rho(perp), becomes finite at a temperature consistent with previous studies on very similar materials; however, the onset of finite parallel resistivity, \rho(par), occurs at a much higher temperature. This behavior contradicts conventional theory, which predicts that \rho(perp) and \rho(par) should become finite at the same temperature. Voltage vs. current measurements near the threshold of voltage detectability indicate linear behavior perpendicular to the layers, becoming nonlinear at higher currents, while the behavior is nonlinear from the onset parallel to the layers. These results, in the presence of moderate H(perp), appear consistent with superconducting order parallel to the layers with voltage fluctuations between the layers due to thermal noise. In search of uncommon effects that might help to explain this behavior, we have performed diffraction measurements that provide evidence for H(perp)-induced charge and spin stripe order. The field-induced decoupling of superconducting layers is similar to the decoupled phase observed previously in La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) with x=1/8 in zero field.

Abstract:We report on scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy studies of the slightly underdoped cuprate superconductor HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+delta, which has an onset Tc approximate to 120 K. Disordered HgO-terminated surfaces were observed after sample cleaving in ultrahigh vacuum, revealing spatially inhomogeneous energy gaps with a low-lying V-shaped structure and the ubiquitous mode features. Similar to Bi-family cuprate superconductors, vortex cores were identified by the suppression of superconducting coherence peaks and the emergence of in -gap features. Superconductivity near step edges is also strongly suppressed over several coherence lengths, forming an effective interface to the superconducting region, where the local spectra show a weak zero -bias conductance peak arising from the Andreev bound states. These results are expected from the widely believed d -wave nature in cuprates, demonstrating a platform for studying unconventional superconductivity.

Abstract:Understanding the rich and competing electronic orders in cuprate superconductors may provide important insight into the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity. Here, by measuring Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x in the extremely underdoped regime, we obtain evidence for a distinct type of ordering, which manifests itself as resistance oscillations at low magnetic fields (<= 10 T) and at temperatures around the superconducting transition. By tuning the doping level p continuously, we reveal that these low-field oscillations occur only when p < 0.1. The oscillation amplitude increases with decreasing p but the oscillation period stays almost constant. We show that these low-field oscillations can be well described by assuming a periodic superconducting structure with a mesh size of about 50 nm. Such a charge order, which is distinctly different from the well-established charge density wave and pair density wave, seems to be an unexpected piece of the puzzle on the correlated physics in cuprates. Understanding the rich electronic orders in cuprate superconductors provide insights into the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity. Here, the authors report a distinct charge order with Little-Parks like resistance oscillations at magnetic fields up to 10 T and around T-c in lightly doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x.

Abstract:In the cuprate superconductors, Nernst and torque magnetization experiments have provided evidence that the disappearance of the Meissner effect at T-c is caused by the loss of long-range phase coherence, rather than the vanishing of the pair condensate. Here we report a series of torque magnetization measurements on single crystals of La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO), Bi2Sr2-yLayCuO6 (Bi 2201), Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta, and optimal YBa2Cu3O7. Some of the measurements were taken to fields as high as 45 T. Focusing on the magnetization above T-c, we show that the diamagnetic term M-d appears at an onset temperature T-onset(M) high above T-c. We construct the phase diagram of both LSCO and Bi 2201 and show that T-onset(M) agrees with the onset temperature of the vortex Nernst signal T-onset(nu). Our results provide thermodynamic evidence against a recent proposal that the high-temperature Nernst signal in LSCO arises from a quasiparticle contribution in a charge-ordered state.
