Abstract:Direct Air Capture (DAC) is a promising technology to fight climate change by capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air. For DAC to be a negative emissions technology, the captured CO2 must be removed permanently, but can also be used as a net-zero technology to produce sustainable chemicals, fuels or other materials. This review presents a comprehensive survey of recent advancements, challenges, and potential applications of DAC technology, with an emphasis on the recent rapid increase in the number of DAC developers, the majority of them being founded in the past 4 years. Through pilot projects and recent commercial deployments, several DAC companies have made significant advances and demonstrated their scalability. Cost and energy efficiency remain significant impediments to the wide deployment of DAC. Integration with emission-free energy sources and utilization of waste heat are being researched to boost the total energy efficiency of DAC systems. Further research of electrochemical technologies for regeneration or direct capture are needed, as well as the development of new, modified, or hybrid adsorbents for improved capture efficiencies. Moreover, favorable regulations and financial incentives are crucial for enhancing the viability of DAC projects and will need to substantially increase if Paris Agreement goals are to be achieved.

Abstract:Direct Air Capture (DAC) is an important solution to curb global warming and enable a circular economy. As fossil fuels dwindle, carbon for commodities such as plastic, cement, steel and liquid fuel, will need to come from somewhere. With the low cost of industrial CO2 (roughly $80 a ton) as well as the low value of most carbon credits, making DAC-produced CO2 competitive at scale is almost impossible. But what if we could scale DAC processes in markets that make sense now, building on learnings as we go while making industries less carbon intensive? The first such application is air quality and energy efficiency in indoor spaces. DAC technology can stabilize CO2 and water levels inside indoor environments to enhance the recirculation rate of internal air, thereby saving significant energy for the HVAC. Another application is the use of small-scale DAC units—providing CO2 at the scale of kilos a day rather than tons, taking advantage of the high CO2 price at that scale as well as B2C markets that otherwise rely on bottled CO2. The approach is called Decentralised DAC or DDAC (analogous to decentralised solar). DAC processes need to be developed but to scale our learnings and drive down costs, we must fund R&D and introduce a significant carbon tax. Finally, interesting new developments such as electro-swing and humidity-swing carbon capture, have the potential to drastically decrease the energy footprint of DAC (its main cost driver), paving the way to making DAC affordable.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2), as the primary greenhouse gas, has significant impacts on global climate change, leading to severe and irreversible adverse consequences for ecosystems and human environments. To address the issue of excessive CO2 emissions, efforts in recent years have yielded significant progress in the development of clean energy sources and the promotion of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies. Conventional CO2 capture techniques are limited in addressing global atmospheric CO2 excess effectively, as they target only high-concentration CO2 emissions and require implementation at specific emission points. Direct air capture (DAC) technology has emerged as a promising solution due to its flexibility in deployment, avoidance of land competition, and ability to capture legacy CO2 emissions. Additionally, DAC offers opportunities for producing synthetic clean fuels, thereby reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels and aiding in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Abstract:A potential to decarbonize atmosphere, while simultaneously providing a feedstock for functional industrial applications, induces a strong economic incentive for direct air capture (DAC). However, DAC systems, developed to date, are energy, resource, and cost prohibitive. Measurement-complementing multiscale modelling has proven to be of a large visible value for the sorbent rapid screening from a vast scientific collection of prospective selected candidates, machine learning (ML) integration, and for the process design engineering with a characteristic low penalty for CO 2 regeneration and optimal uptake rates. The review provides an extensive evaluation of recent advances in multiscale modelling of DAC research. It introduces the theoretical physical descriptions of DAC, presents atom scale structuring, and brings together the state of the art of this, until now, poorly-researched analysis topic. Reviewed (CO 2 mass) transfer works span from the ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculation relationships to mesoscale Monte Carlo, molecular dynamics simulations and micro-kinetics, adsorption/desorption, and lastly, most commonly-investigated specific macroscale concept. The modelled DAC processes properties reported in the literature have been compared, which allowed us to identify the most effective sorbents. Amine functionalized metal-organic frameworks exhibit low energy requirements, the lowest reported was 1000 kWh tCO 2 −1 , while the lowest published cost was 60 $ tCO 2 −1 . Recently, there are progressively emerging promising new entrants into the DAC field, providing climate-neutral feedstock for commercial processes. The market demand for CO 2 is expected to exponentially rise up to 6.1 Gt in 2050, while the cost of implementing DAC technologies is predicted to be reduced under 125 $ tCO 2 −1 in the year 2030. Further modelling research activities in CO 2 (sorption) bed form phenomena could not only break the barriers of current renewable technologies, but also couple the CO 2 reactions with the sequestration, reactors, and neutralization of harmful environmental pollutants, monoxide, NO x , SO x , etc. DAC could be ultimately coupled with electrolysis (hydrogen), producing e-fuels.

Abstract:Direct air capture technology (DAC) is integral to achieving carbon emission targets. This paper briefly analyses the application of DAC technology in indoor CO2 removal and CO2 mineralisation. Thanks to the elevated concentration of CO2 in the air (1000ppm) and the integrated DAC unit and air conditioning unit, the indoor CO2 removal system significantly reduces energy consumption. CO2 mineralisation, combined with DAC technology, offers a safe solution for permanent carbon storage and the possibility of obtaining a valuable end product by selecting the right mineralised feedstock. Future research should continue to focus on the development of adsorbent materials and the integration of CO2 capture with subsequent applications to achieve sustainability.

Abstract:There is mounting evidence that, unless greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions fall back quickly, the goals outlined by the 2015 Paris Agreement to keep the global temperature rise well below 2 °C and preferably 1.5 °C will not be met. In response to these concerns, direct air carbon capture and storage (DACCS) technologies are gaining research and development attention. This article provides a thorough comparison of the two leading DACCS variants and reports on their status among major research and policy institutions worldwide. By translating the operating and capital costs to the Australian context, we assess the viability of DACCS implementation using either cheap renewable or legacy fossil energy to power CO2 extraction plants.

Abstract:Abstract Amid a relentless global climate crisis, the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) spotlighted Direct Air Carbon Capture (DACC) as a key intervention to mitigate escalating temperatures and CO 2 levels. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) underscores the urgency of this challenge, stipulating the need for robust CO 2 removal strategies. It sets a daunting yet crucial target: capture 85 million metric tons of CO 2 by 2030, escalating to 980 million metric tons by 2050, to achieve net-zero emissions (IEA, Executive Summary—Direct Air Capture 2022—Analysis. https://www.iea.org/reports/direct-air-capture-2022/executive-summary ). Despite this imperative, the existing 19 operational DAC facilities globally face significant barriers, including prohibitive costs and stringent regulations, which impede their large-scale application (Ozkan et al.). While COP28 stopped short of delineating a definitive roadmap for DAC, this article addresses a vital aspect of this technology: DAC processes’ substantial energy and heat requirements, which are integral to their operational efficiency and economic viability. This article illuminates pathways for future technological evolution and cost optimization through an in-depth analysis of these requirements, thereby charting a course toward a more effective and scalable DAC infrastructure. Abstract:This review paper focuses on direct air capture technologies, consisting of capturing the CO2 in the ambient air and concentrating it for other value‐added applications or storage. The techno‐economic and sustainability performances of several key technologies currently on the market are discussed. High energy demand, leading to high costs, is highlighted, although future costs are expected to decrease. When combined with subsequent CO2 sequestration, the carbon negative characteristic of the technology is also pointed out.SummaryTo limit the increase of the global average temperature in the range of 1.5°C to 2°C above pre‐industrial levels, it is mandatory to reduce anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Aggressive mitigation measures are thus needed to tackle these emissions leading to "net negative CO2 emissions." The present study focuses on direct air capture (DAC) processes among the diverse negative emissions approaches. DAC refers to man‐made technologies that selectively extract CO2 from ambient air and deliver it in a concentrated form for further use or storage. DAC technologies are currently developed at different levels of maturity and performance. They can be classified into three main approaches, the liquid sorbent approach, the solid sorbent approach, and a panel of more innovative technologies combining different approaches. They involve various unit operations and different materials and energy types (electrical and thermal). To better evaluate the status and both the environmental and economic performances, the present paper provides a literature review of the life cycle (LCA) and techno‐economic (TEA) assessments in relation to DAC process chains. It was emphasized that DAC could lead to negative emissions if paired with subsequent storage, while the production of synthetic fuels can at best be carbon neutral when using CO2 from the air. Building large DAC plants has an impact on the amount of energy required to operate them, as well as other environmental impacts with regard to land, water, and material use. Even if the carbon‐negative characteristic of DAC was confirmed, these technologies are still expensive. It was highlighted that large DAC costs ranges are currently provided in the literature, from €80/tCO2 to €1133/tCO2 for the current DAC processes, while estimations from €34 to €260/tCO2 are expected in the future. Abstract:Significant progress has been made in direct air capture (DAC) in recent years. Evidence suggests that the large-scale deployment of DAC by adsorption would be technically feasible for gigatons of CO2 capture annually. However, great efforts in adsorption-based DAC technologies are still required. This review provides an exhaustive description of materials development, adsorbent shaping, in situ characterization, adsorption mechanism simulation, process design, system integration, and techno-economic analysis of adsorption-based DAC over the past five years; and in terms of adsorbent development, affordable DAC adsorbents such as amine-containing porous materials with large CO2 adsorption capacities, fast kinetics, high selectivity, and long-term stability under ultra-low CO2 concentration and humid conditions. It is also critically important to develop efficient DAC adsorptive processes. Research and development in structured adsorbents that operate at low-temperature with excellent CO2 adsorption capacities and kinetics, novel gas-solid contactors with low heat and mass transfer resistances, and energy-efficient regeneration methods using heat, vacuum, and steam purge is needed to commercialize adsorption-based DAC. The synergy between DAC and carbon capture technologies for point sources can help in mitigating climate change effects in the long-term. Further investigations into DAC applications in the aviation, agriculture, energy, and chemical industries are required as well. This work benefits researchers concerned about global energy and environmental issues, and delivers perspective views for further deployment of negative-emission technologies.
Assessing Capacity to Deploy Direct Air Capture Technology at the Country Level – An Expert and Information Entropy Comparative Analysis

Abstract:An ever-dwindling carbon budget, resulting in temperature rise of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels projected between 2030-2035, has generated a necessity to explore climate mitigation technologies such as direct air capture (DAC). DAC typically involves the use of materials and energy to capture CO2 directly from the atmosphere. However, DAC technologies remain a long way from the necessary level of development and scale needed to move the needle on carbon removal and mitigating against climate change. This study conducts a country-level analysis using an expert elicitation and an information entropy method, with a weighted group of variables identified from existing literature as necessary to develop and deploy low-temperature, electrochemical and high-temperature DAC technologies. Here we show that: 1) adopting the expert survey variable weighting, USA, Canada, China and Australia are best positioned to deploy the various DAC technologies; 2) the information entropy approach offers a broadly similar result with traditionally developed nations being best positioned, in addition to land rich countries, to deploy DAC technologies; 3) a comparatively developed policy and financing environment, as well as low carbon energy supply would raise a country's DAC capacity; 4) developing countries such as China have significant potential to deploy DAC, owing to a well-rounded position across variables. These results produce wide-ranging policy implications for efforts to deploy climate mitigation technologies through the development of a multilateral, coordinated mitigation and carbon dioxide removal deployment strategy.

Abstract:Direct air capture (DAC) is a promising technology that can help to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air. One application of DAC is indoor CO2 direct air capture (iCO2-DAC). A wide range of materials with unique properties for CO2 capture have been investigated, including porous materials, zeolites, and metal-organic frameworks. The selection of suitable materials for iCO2-DAC depends on several factors, such as cost, CO2 adsorption capacity, and stability. The development of new materials with improved properties for iCO2-DAC is an active research area. The captured CO2 can serve as a renewable carbon source to produce biofuels for internal use (e.g., for heating purposes), decreasing the environmental impact of buildings. This review article highlights the importance of iCO2-DAC to improve indoor air quality in buildings and boost the circular economy. We discuss the available carbon capture technologies and materials, discussing their properties and focusing on those potentially applicable to indoor environments. We also provide a hypothetic scenario where CO2 is captured from different indoor environments and transformed into sustainable fuels by using an emerging carbon capture and utilization technology (microbial electrosynthesis). Finally, we evaluate the economic feasibility of such an innovative approach in comparison to the use of traditional, fossil-based fuels.

Abstract:The extraction of CO2 from ambient air, or direct air capture (DAC), is a crucial negative CO2 emissions technology with great potential for contributing to the mitigation of global warming and climate change. However, nearly all published research on DAC has been conducted under indoor temperature conditions: 20 to 30 °C. In contrast, the future global implementation requires DAC to be operational across a wide expanse of geographical areas, in which the local temperatures can vary between −30 to 50 °C. Similarly, the absolute humidity can vary from ∼0 to 84 g/m3 in various locations. Due to the massive amount of air that would be processed, it may be impractical to preheat or dehumidify the air before the CO2 separation. Therefore, it is important to develop DAC materials with good performance at realistic outdoor conditions, especially at sub-ambient conditions: −30 to 20 °C. In addition to material development, system-level studies at sub-ambient conditions are also needed for the DAC processes to reach optimal designs, which may be very different from those at ambient conditions. In this perspective article, we first assess the literature to identify the technical gaps that need to be filled for DAC to be applicable at realistic outdoor conditions. We then suggest additional research directions needed for DAC to be viable under varied conditions from the perspective of materials and system designs. For materials, we discuss the expected physical and chemical property changes for the sorbents when the temperature or humidity reaches extremes within their range, and how that will impact performance. Similarly, for system design, we indicate how varied conditions will impact performance and how these changes will impact process optimization.

Abstract:Significant research interest has been directed towards the deployment of direct air capture (DAC) as a net-negative CO 2 emissions technology to help limit global temperature rise to below 2 °C. The scope of this review is to outline the advancement of adsorption-based DAC technologies, as well as to highlight the still-existing data gaps, for both materials' development and process design in the period 2016 – 2021. On the material side, we highlight the available and missing data on adsorbent properties in relation to what is needed for process modelling and design. We cover material densities, textural properties, thermal properties, adsorption isotherms (i.e. CO 2 , N 2 , O 2 , H 2 O), adsorption kinetics, and adsorbent stability towards humidity, oxidation, and cycling. On the process side, we provide a detailed look at key process studies conducted in the same time frame by considering the trade-offs to be expected in the design of the adsorption-based DAC process. We focus on process configuration and contactor design, desorption processes, and the need for systematic reporting of key performance indicators to allow for accurate comparisons and benchmarking. Throughout the review, we identify the lack of synergy between material and process development which must be addressed to advance the field of DAC by adsorption.

Abstract:Direct air capture (DAC) has received tremendous attention as a negative carbon emission technology that could facilitate the addressing of global climate change. In this work, we systematically summarized the latest progress on the development of direct air capture and comprehensively reviewed the properties and performance of DAC adsorbents, which are categorized as physisorption and chemisorption according to sorption mechanisms. The unresolved issues and possible improvements of traditional DAC adsorbents for CO 2 capture are pointed out. We highlight the potential of novel MMO-supported solid amine materials for DAC due to its excellent CO 2 adsorption capacity, superior regenerability, and ease for scaled up. This review paves the way for the understanding of the intrinsic mechanism and the practical development of DAC technology.

Abstract:Building a carbon–neutral world requires the removal of excess CO2 that has already been dumped into the atmosphere. The technologies have been well established to remove carbon dioxide directly from ambient air, or "direct air capture" (DAC). DAC is still in its infancy, with many challenges remaining. Sorbents are central to the capture of CO2 from ambient air. Many sorbents have been reported to take up CO2, but they all have advantages and disadvantages. Recent advances in material synthesis and surface chemistry have resulted in new generations of CO2 sorbents. Development needs to progress quickly, because global warming will not wait. We summarize recent progress on designed sorbents for CO2 capture from ambient air. There are mainly six typical technologies for DAC, including physical sorption, sorption by strong bases, sorption by amine-modified materials, sorption by aqueous amino acid solution followed by precipitation with a guanidine compound, moisture-swing sorption, and electrochemical-swing sorption. Abstract:Direct air capture (DAC) is gathering momentum since it has vast potential and high flexibility to collect CO2 from discrete sources as “synthetic tree” when compared with current CO2 capture technologies, e.g., amine based post-combustion capture. It is considered as one of the emerging carbon capture technologies in recent decades and remains in a prototype investigation stage with many technical challenges to be overcome. The objective of this paper is to comprehensively discuss the state-of-the-art of DAC and CO2 utilization, note unresolved technology bottlenecks, and give investigation perspectives for commercial large-scale applications. Firstly, characteristics of physical and chemical sorbents are evaluated. Then, the representative capture processes, e.g., pressure swing adsorption, temperature swing adsorption and other ongoing absorption chemical loops, are described and compared. Methods of CO2 conversion including synthesis of fuels and chemicals as well as biological utilization are reviewed. Finally, techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment for DAC application are summarized. Based on research achievements, future challenges of DAC and CO2 conversion are presented, which include providing synthesis guidelines for obtaining sorbents with the desired characteristics, uncovering the mechanisms for different working processes and establishing evaluation criteria in terms of technical and economic aspects.

Abstract:Direct air capture (DAC) is a promising carbon mitigation technology and will likely be part of extensive carbon removal portfolio. Adsorptive DAC is an appropriate option for carbon capture to utilize low-grade heat because of its desirable regeneration temperature and adaptability to be integrated with renewables. Building indoor environment with CO2 concentrations above 1000 ppm provides another suitable scenario for DAC. Herein, DAC using temperature-vacuum swing adsorption (TVSA) is presented and analyzed by integrating various low-grade heat sources in buildings. An amine-functionalized metal organic framework is selected for process simulation, and the performance is compared with those using other sorbents. It indicates that amine-functionalized material has advantages in CO2 productivity and purity. A techno-economic analysis is carried out to explore the benefit of the proposed DAC in buildings. The results show that regeneration by heat pumps at 373 K is the most competitive solution and has 176.7 $center dot tCO(2)(-1) of the levelized cost of DAC (LCOD). Compared with conventional energy supply, solutions with low-grade heat utilization in buildings could achieve lower carbon intensity and increase by 5.2-25.0% in net LCOD. These results will provide practical guidelines for DAC application with lower energy penalties and costs.

Abstract:Capturing CO2 directly from the air (direct air capture (DAC)) is an energy‐intensive process and the technical potential of offshore wind energy can be an imperative player to meet DAC energy requirements. Employing offshore wind energy can eliminate indirect emissions associated with meeting DAC energy demands, facilitative modular NET deployment globally, be positioned geographically to avoid competition with grid decarbonization and take advantage of otherwise stranded offshore wind resources. Summary The world is setting aggressive targets for climate change mitigation and most pathway models require negative emission technologies (NETs) to meet these targets. Direct air capture (DAC) is a promising NET that captures carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmospheric air; however, indirect and embodied emissions to power and build DAC systems must be considered when exploring NET options. Wind energy has experienced rapid cost reductions in the past few years and experts predict a significant continued decline in offshore wind energy costs. Here, we develop a conceptual design and conduct an energy assessment of two dominating DAC designs to show the potential of offshore wind to meet the DAC energy demand for two different scenarios capturing 3.3 GtCO2/y (10%) and 11 GtCO2/y (33.3%) of current global CO2 emissions covering a range of estimates for future NETs required to meet net‐zero goals. Energy assessment showed that the estimated energy requirement for the Carbon Engineering based design is higher as compared with Climeworks based design owing to the high temperature (900°C) requirement in the calcination step required for the desorption of CO2. However, conceptual design revealed that area requirements for DAC configurations are much less for Carbon Engineering based design comparatively. Employing offshore wind energy can eliminate indirect emissions associated with meeting DAC energy demands, facilitative modular NET deployment globally, be positioned geographically to avoid competition with grid decarbonization and take advantage of otherwise stranded offshore wind resources. Large‐scale offshore wind energy integrated DAC systems, therefore, deserve development efforts and deployment alongside other mitigation and NET options.
Thermodynamic Study on Two Adsorption Working Cycles for Direct Air Capture

Abstract:Direct capture of CO2 from air, i.e. DAC, is considered as a potential solution to address anthropogenic climate change in the near future. This work provides a comparative assessment of DAC by using five adsorbents, i.e. SIFSIX-3-Ni, NbOFFIVE-1-Ni, N2H4/Mg-MOF-74, TRI/PE-MCM-41 and DETA/PPN-6, based on equilibrium working capacity and exergy efficiency analysis. Vacuum-pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) and temperature vacuum swing adsorption (TVSA) cycles are compared by adjusting working parameters. Adsorption temperature/pressure, desorption temperature/pressure and CO(2 )concentration are analyzed. For working capacity, SIFSIX-3-Ni can achieve 1.08 mmol.g(-1 )at 6 mbar adsorption and 1 mbar desorption partial pressure in VPSA cycle. N2H4/Mg-MOF-74 performs the most outstanding working capacity in TVSA cycle. The results show that raising pressure of air is an unsatisfactory choice to increase working capacity due to the large amount of energy demand of compression process. Thus, TVSA is a promising process applied in DAC. When desorption pressure is 4 mbar and adsorption temperature is 25 ?C, the maximum exergy efficiency among these adsorbents is 50.9% of DETA/PPN-6. Amine-modified adsorbents have an excellent performance above two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in most situations. These findings can provide helpful guides when choosing appropriate adsorbents and cycles for DAC.
