Abstract:Solar water purification is a promising scheme to relieve the energy crisis and clean water shortages. In order to improve the efficiency of producing water, it is necessary to develop a novel photothermal conversion interface to manage heat loss and boost water evaporation efficiency. Herein, a Janus hydrogel evaporator of powder active carbon (PAC) and Fe 3 O 4 in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) cross-link hydrogel, called CFPS, is explored as the light absorber for broadband light absorption and formed a hydrogel network of the multi-hydrophilic group. Its hydrophilic/hydrophobic structure of CFPS is used to regulate heat loss and promote water transport, which can attain lower evaporation enthalpy and a higher evaporation rate. Specifically, the surface temperature of the CFPS can reach around 45 °C and 93.4% energy utilization efficiency under 1 sun illumination. In the comparison of the analogous Fe 3 O 4 -based evaporator, CFPS has the higher static evaporation rate with 3.43 kg m –2 h −1 . Besides, it has great mechanical properties, durability and anti-crystallization function, which can be adapted to the water purification scene of wastewater and hypersaline water desalination. This photosensitive magnetic hydrogel evaporator shows potential in the scenarios of wastewater purification and desalination.

Abstract:Given the urgency of water pollution and freshwater scarcity, the pursuit of efficient and clean desalination techniques has gained prominence. In this study, a multi-defective molybdenum disulfide nanoflower was synthesized within a carbon-dots solution environment, named CDs/MoS 2 , exhibiting exceptional photothermal and catalytic properties. Relying on the excellent photothermal properties, antibacterial rates of up to 94% and 99% against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Additionally, the CDs/MoS 2 nanoflowers exhibited a remarkable removal efficiency of 91% for high concentrations of methylene blue (MB) through photodegradation. A gradient photothermal composite hydrogel (CDs/MoS 2 @PVA Hydrogel) was designed to serve as a solar-driven clean water generator to isolate drinking water from various non-potable water. The gradient hydrogel effectively enhanced solar energy absorption through light trapping, creating dispersed hot spots to capture and activate water molecules. As a result, it achieved a high evaporation rate of 1.49 kg m -2 h -1 at a solar radiation of 1 kW m -2 , with an impressive solar-to-vapor conversion efficiency of 92.5%. The hydrogel was successfully employed in diverse water treatment applications, including desalination, anti-bacteria and removal of organic contaminants from water. This study presents an innovative approach to developing novel solar vapor materials for water purification purposes.

Abstract:Silk fibroin (SF) has attracted wide attention due to its excellent biocompatibility and versatile adjustability. The regeneration and reutilization of silk fibroin can efficiently utilize waste cocoons and silk. However, the regenerated SF hydrogels suffer from inadequate mechanical properties and lack inherent antibacterial capabilities, limiting their application in seawater desalination. This study achieved a novel hydrogel (STS@Fe) with photothermal antimicrobial activity, good mechanical property, and excellent durability using a green dual-directional crosslink and meso-reconstruction strategy. The metal-phenolic networks (MPN) were synthesized utilizing the natural plant polyphenol tannic acid (TA) and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. This research incorporated MPN into dissolved and regenerated silk fibroin and sodium alginate solution, enhanced mechanical properties through cryogenic salt precipitation, and prepared STS@Fe hydrogel. The inherent photothermal properties of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and TA complex, coupled with their synergistic effect under near-infrared radiation, can confer excellent photothermal-enhanced antibacterial activity to the fibroin hydrogel. The tensile strength of STS@Fe hydrogel is enhanced 31 times than that of traditional fibroin hydrogel, and its evaporation rate is 4.77 times higher than that of pure water evaporation. The hydrogel has an efficient seawater desalination rate and outstanding antibacterial properties in real seawater conditions. Moreover, The STS@Fe shows effective treatment capabilities for dyeing wastewater and oily saline water.

Abstract:Solar water purification has been attracting considerable attention due to its promising desalination and purification applications to alleviate water scarcity and pollution. However, despite recent rapid progress, rational design and development of robust and highly efficient interfacial photothermal materials sufficing for large scale real usage is still a critical challenge to the science and technology of this field. Herein, we develop a mechanically robust nanocomposite hydrogel with intriguing evaporation performance by simple blending and cross-linking of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) nanofibrils and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) viscous solution. As-prepared PEDOT:PSS-PVA hydrogel exhibits an excellent light absorption ratio of ∼ 99.7% in a wide wavelength range of 250 ∼ 2500 nm and displays unprecedented high energy efficiency of ∼ 98.0% with a fast evaporation rate of ∼ 2.84 kg m-2 h-1 under one sun irradiation. A 60-day continuous test simulating the real seawater evaporation environment shows superior long-term stability of such hydrogel with an average energy efficiency of ∼ 93.3%. To harness these advantageous properties, we further demonstrate the scalable hydrogel production and fabricate a solar water evaporator equipment for seawater desalination and wastewater purification, from which the acquired water can meet the drinking requirements set by the World Health Organization.

Abstract:Huge seawater resources are of utmost importance in addressing the increasing and severe water shortage worldwide. However, high-efficiently and sustainably extracting fresh water from seawater through solar evaporation remains a challenging task. Herein, we propose a novel approach based on the morph-genetic biomimetic concept, utilizing a cuttlebone-templated directional porous hydrogel (CTDPH). By etching away the cuttlebone (CaCO 3 ) in the hydrogel network, we have developed a zwitterionic material that exhibits high-efficiency photo-thermal conversion, resistance to salt deposition, and super hydrophilicity, enabling high-efficiency solar evaporation. The resultant CTDPH demonstrates a high level of photo-thermal conversion efficiency, thanks to the incorporation of MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) 2D nanosheets. By introducing polyzwitterions into the hydrogel matrix, the CTDPH achieves superhydrophilicity, greatly enhancing the transport of seawater. More importantly, the CTDPH possesses a penetrating oriented macro-porous structure, enabling rapid seawater transportation while effectively preventing salt crystallization. This prevents salt deposition on the surface of the hydrogel even during continuous 12-hour 1.0 sun irradiation. As a result, compared with the MXene-free gels and cuttlebone-reserved gels, this CTDPH can largely increase the seawater evaporating rate from 0.73 or 1.75 to 3.11 kg m -2 h −1 under 1.0 sun irradiation. Furthermore, even after undergoing 10 cycles of seawater evaporation, the CTDPH still maintains 91.6% of its original solar evaporation rate (2.85 kg m -2 h −1 ). The CTDPH emerges as a promising contender, offering both high efficiency and sustainability for solar evaporation from seawater, while simultaneously paving the way for innovative approaches to explore other materials and systems in the realm of solar evaporation.

Abstract:Photothermal hydrogels featuring broadband light absorption abilities and highly hydrated networks provide an appealing mass-energy transfer platform for water evaporation by using solar energy. However, the targeted delivery of solar heat energy to power the water evaporation process remains challenging. Herein, enlightened by metal-phenolic coordination chemistry and camouflaged architecture, photothermal hydrogels with dual-mechanism vaporization structure are tactfully designed via a rational interfacial engineering and integration strategy to enable near-µm heat confinement and highly efficient light-to-heat conversion ability. The spectrum-tailored liquid metal droplet (LMGAs-FeIII ) and optimized carbon-wrapped silver nanowire sponge (Ag@C750 ) are integrally built as photothermal promotors/channels and jointly embedded into a highly hydratable poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel, denoted as PALGH, to synergistically boost water molecule activation and interfacial vaporization behavior by triggering robust photothermal performance. As a result, under one sun irradiation, the all-embracing PALGH hydrogel evaporation system achieves a brine evaporation rate to a high level of 3.47 kg m-2 h-1 , and >19 L m-2 clean water of PALGH is ideally delivered daily when purifying natural seawater. This work offers not only a rational design principle to create sophisticated photothermal materials but also replenishes insight into solar heat generation and water transportation in a cross-media system.

High-performance solar-driven interfacial evaporation through molecular design of antibacterial, biomass-derived hydrogels

Abstract:Hydrogel has been regarded as one of the most promising candidates for next-generation solar evaporation technology to produce freshwater from non-potable water. However, synthesizing hydrogel absorbers that can precisely regulate water state and significantly reduce the water vaporization enthalpy remains a grand challenge. Herein, we report the rational design of a novel hydrogel hybrid solar evaporator constructed by poly(vinyl alcohol) and sodium lignosulfonate (SLS), with addition of carbon nanotube as a light absorption material. The abundant sulfonate and hydroxyl groups of SLS enhance the interplay between hydrogel and water molecule through electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bond. As such, the presence of SLS not only remarkably promotes the hydrophilicity and water transport of hydrogel, but also precisely tunes the state of water molecule and the content of intermediate water for reducing the water vaporization enthalpy. The combined advantageous features endow the as-prepared hydrogel with an evaporation rate up to 2.09 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 Sun illumination, along with good anti-acid/basic abilities, antibacterial property, high salt-tolerance, and self-cleaning capability in purifying different types of wastewater. Finally, an outdoor solar seawater desalination device is designed to generate drinking water from seawater. The daily drinking water production amount per square meter is ca. 13 kg, which satifies the five adults' daily water consumption (12.5 kg). The present study highlights that rationally constructing the molecular architecture of hydrogel and tuning the interplay between water and hydrogel are effective strategies to fabricate advanced hydrogel solar evaporators for addressing the global freshwater shortage.

Abstract:Recently, integration of two or more important properties into a hydrogel has been a challenge in the preparation of the multifunctional hydrogel. Herein, in order to impart conductive and magnetic properties to the self-healing PVA hydrogel at the same time, the nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) was used as the substrate. The polyaniline was coated on the NFC surface by in situ chemical polymerization, and the MnFe2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized and loaded on the NFC by the chemical co-precipitation method. The multifunctional PVA hydrogel was prepared by incorporating the NFC/PAni/MnFe2O4 nanocomposites with the PVA hydrogel. The magnetic and conductive property tests of the multifunctional PVA hydrogel showed that the maximum saturation magnetization and conductivity were 5.22 emu.g(-1) and 8.15 x 10(-3) S.cm(-1), respectively. Moreover, the multifunctional PVA hydrogel exhibited excellent self-healing and ultrasoft properties, which could be self-healed completely after the pieces of the hydrogel were put together for several minutes at room temperature. Due to the self-healing ability, conductivity, and magnetism, the novel hydrogel was expected to be used in many practical applications, such as electrochemical display devices, rechargeable batteries, and electromagnetic interference shielding. More importantly, we proved a facile template approach to the preparation of a stable polymer and nanoparticle composites using NFC as substrates that imparted different properties to hydrogels.

Materials for Renewable and Sustainable Energy

Abstract:Using the renewable energy, especially solar energy, is an environmental-friendly approach for seawater desalination. Solar evaporation is a promising freshwater harvesting strategy rich in energy, including solar and water energy. Herein, we propose a solar evaporation hybrid hydrogel including polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and glutaraldehyde (GA) as a polymer network, semiconductor oxide nanoparticles (ZnO, CuO) and activated carbon as a photothermal material. Structural properties of hybrid hydrogel were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, surface morphology by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), chemical bonding by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and optical absorption and absorption coefficient (α) of components by UV–Vis spectroscopy. The result showed in visible region, PVA:ZnO:AC hydrogel nanocomposite has a strong absorption (55%) compare of the PVA:CuO:AC hydrogel nanocomposite (35%). In addition, by distillation measurements, the evaporator system demonstrated for PVA:CuO:AC and PVA:ZnO:AC Hydrogel an evaporation rate of 2.29 kg m −2 h −1 and 5.19 kg m −2 h −1 with the evaporation efficiency of 30.66% and 70.80%, respectively, under 0.1 sun irradiation. For PVA:CuO:AC hydrogel, the hardness of Caspian seawater decreased from 6648 to 115 ppm and ion conductance from 8641 (μS) to 244 (μS) and for the PVA:ZnO:AC Hydrogel decreased to 97 ppm and ion conductance to 206 (μS). Experiments showed that with changing type of the ZnO or CuO semiconductor oxide nanoparticles can effectively on regulate the optical properties of the evaporator. Eventually, this work begins a new point of synthesizing cost-effective photothermal absorbers based on metal oxides material and activated carbon nanocomposite.

Abstract:A viable and long-term method for producing clean water at hydrogel interfaces is solar-driven evaporation. This research utilizes the microgel polymerization technique to fabricate DCS-PNIPAm gels that exhibit exceptional swelling capacity and mechanical qualities. Electrostatic forces and hydrogen bonds between molecules occur between the sulfonic acid anions and ammonium cations inside the P(NIPAm-co-DMAPS) chains. Alginate is characterized by a high content of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, which facilitate the establishment of hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions within the P(NIPAm-co-DMAPS) system. Semi-interpenetrating networks are formed in the hydrogel as a result of physical and chemical cross-linking brought on by these interactions. Consequently, the hydrogel’s mechanical characteristics and swelling capacity were significantly enhanced, and the water-collecting rate of DCS-PNIPAm reached up to 9.32 kg m–2 h–1 under one sun irradiation. Notably, the sodium alginate (SA) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) layer of the DCS-PNIPAm gel has excellent filtration properties, which can make it possible to use sunlight to purify water from various contaminated water sources containing dyes, oils, and metals.

Composite hydrogel-based photothermal self-pumping system with salt and bacteria resistance for super-efficient solar-powered water evaporation

Abstract:Synergistically increasing the solar adsorption/conversion, regulating the water transfer and activation as well as resisting the fouling to enhance the solar-powered interfacial water evaporation performance remains an urgent challenge. Herein, a smart 3D porous photothermal composite hydrogel MoS2@GH, where the antibacterial porous molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanoflowers were intercalated between graphene (MoS2@GH) via a simple chemical reduction, was prepared. This cooperated with a controllable self-pumping system of salt concentration differences and liquid level height differences-driven capillary water transfer/transpiration (CHTS) for solar steam generator. In this generator, the hierarchically porous hydrogel not only contributed the light trapping to enhance solar absorption but also generated more dispersed hotspots to access and activate water. Simultaneously, the CHTS system regulated an appropriate water replenishment without direct immersion into bulk water to match the evaporation of hydrogel. As a result, this system can achieve a super-efficient water evaporation rate of 3.2 kg m−2 h−1 under 0.9 sun, and can also delay the salting out fouling and resist the bacterial biofouling. These together with the good thermal and chemical stability of the pure inorganic hydrogel entrust an efficient water desalination, paving a robust way for sustainable clean water production.

Abstract:Innovative materials are required to promote the development of solar-powered interfacial desalination and purification technologies to address global freshwater scarcities. To this end, evaporators using polymeric hydrogels have been widely studied. However, these systems are slow, energy-intensive, complex, and difficult to operate. New strategies are in urgent need. The present work employs polymeric phase inversion to develop poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based foam hydrogels, wherein the air bubble phase served as the matrix and cross-linked PVA hydrogel acted as the dispersed phase. In addition, we utilize Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets-based MXene as the photothermal agent to facilitate the fabrication of hierarchical pore-in-pore structures. The prepared PVA/MXene foam hydrogels exhibit > 95% porosity, as well as high compressibility (>7000 cycles) and very rapid water transport. Importantly, these materials also exhibit remarkably low water evaporation enthalpies. Combined with a new heat supply model, those foam hydrogels achieve an evaporation rate of 4.1 ± 0.1 kg m −2 h −1 with energy efficiency up to 128.8% ± 2.0% under 1 sun irradiation, which is the highest value for MXene-based nanocomposites reported so far. This study demonstrates a significant advancement in solar desalination system by combining phase inversion to make innovative foam materials with optimal external heat management.

Abstract:The development of high quality magnetic self-healing hydrogels containing well-dispersed magnetic nanoparticle has been a challenging procedure due to unavailable methods of facilely introducing groups that can efficiently stabilize these magnetic nanoparticles in the self-healing hydrogels. In this research, a polymer containing both phenylboronic acid (PBA) and phosphonic acid (PA) groups has been developed by the Kabachnik-Fields (KF) reaction. This polymer well disperses iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) through the strong interactions between the PA groups and the surface of the IONPs; thus, this polymer effectively mixed IONPs and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) to form a hydrogel containing well-dispersed IONPs. The resulting hydrogel is self-healing, owing to the dynamic borate ester linkages. Moreover, the presence of the IONPs endowed the hydrogel with magnetic properties, also making it heat-responsive in an alternating magnetic field and expanding its application as a contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging. The magnetic self-healing hydrogel showed excellent biosafety properties in animal experiments, suggesting its potential as an injectable implant material for biological and medical applications. This research exploits a biocompatible magnetic self-healing hydrogel with well-dispersed IONPs, demonstrating the value of the KF reaction in the development of functional polymers and smart materials, which might prompt a broad study of multicomponent reactions in interdisciplinary fields.

Abstract:Sustainable and energy-efficient water purification making use of solar energy is highly desirable to address water scarcity and pollution crisis. However, it remains a challenge to achieve full solar spectrum utilization with photothermal and photodegradation capability. Herein, inspired by the unique optical property of MXene, a novel assembly of MXene hydrogel membrane with synergistic photothermal and photocatalysis effect is proposed for integrated water purification. The MXene hydrogel membrane is fabricated based on the structure-directing of self-stacking MXene nanosheets and its abundant molecular interactions with the polymer matrix, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and the multifunctional layer-crosslinker, porphyrin. The obtained MXene hydrogel membrane exhibits fascinating physicochemical properties combining dynamic hydrophilic network of hydrogel and permeability of membrane, making it a preferred medium for both vapor generation and photodegradation. Moreover, calculation and experimental results illustrates the charge redistributions and coupling interactions between MXene and porphyrin, which imparts enhanced photothermal effect and photocatalytic activitiy. As a result, the MXene hydrogel membrane exhibits an high solar-driven water evaporation rate (1.82 kg m−2 h−1) and a photodegradation efficiency (90.5 %), rendering an integrated water purification capability under one sun irradiation. This work presents a feasible and effective route towards develop of MXene-mediated cooperative photochemical and photothermal solar energy conversion for sustainable water purification.

Abstract:Solar interface photothermal evaporation is a promising strategy to ensure affordable water production. However, obtaining freshwater from wastewater containing highly concentrated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is still a high hanker. Here, a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based hydrogel evaporator was developed to mutually reinforce photothermal evaporation and photocatalytic degradation. The vertical structure promoted the rapid transfer of water molecules between the microchannels. Moreover, the solar absorption efficiency can be improved through multiple reflections. Furthermore, introducing polypyrrole (PPy) and MXene@TiO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 (MTG) heterojunction can not only regulate the interaction force between the polymer network and water molecules to reduce the evaporation enthalpy, but also endow the PVA/PPy@MTG hydrogel with excellent photocatalytic degradation performance. Besides, the first principles simulation indicated that this hydrogel displayed higher binding energy for contaminants than water molecules. Therefore, it can achieve an evaporation rate of ∼3.0 kg m −2 h −1 and energy efficiency of ∼97.2 % under 1-sun, higher than the structure-disordered PVA/PPy@MTG hydrogel. In addition, it can degrade different complex components, especially for highly concentrated VOCs (100 ppm) with an efficiency of >94.2 %, exceeding most of the reported integrated evaporators. This work will pave a potential pathway to design novel evaporation for sustainable water remediation.

Abstract:In recent years, with the outbreak and epidemic of the novel coronavirus in the world, how to obtain clean water from the limited resources has become an urgent issue of concern to all mankind. Atmospheric water harvesting technology and solar-driven interfacial evaporation technology have shown great potential in seeking clean and sustainable water resources. Here, inspired by a variety of organisms in nature, a multi-functional hydrogel matrix composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), sodium alginate (SA) cross-linked by borax as well as doped with zeolitic imidazolate framework material 67 (ZIF-67) and graphene owning macro/micro/nano hierarchical structure has successfully fabricated for producing clean water. The hydrogel not only can reach the average water harvesting ratio up to 22.44 g g-1 under the condition of fog flow after 5 h, but also be capable of desorbing the harvested water with water release efficiency of 1.67 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun. In addition to excellent performance in passive fog harvesting, the evaporation rate over 1.89 kg m-2 h-1 is attained under 1 sun on natural seawater during long-term. This hydrogel indicates its potential in producing clean water resources in multiple scenarios in different dry or wet states, and which holds great promise for flexible electronic materials and sustainable sewage or wastewater treatment applications.
Composite Polyelectrolyte Photothermal Hydrogel with Anti-biofouling and Antibacterial Properties for the Real-World Application of Solar Steam Generation

Abstract:Solar steam generation provides a promising and low-cost solution for freshwater production in energy scarcity areas. However, in real-world applications, evaporators are easily affected by microorganism contamination in source water, causing surface corrosion, structural damage, or even invalidation. Developing anti-biofouling and antibacterial evaporators is significant for long-term stable freshwater production. Herein, a composite polyelectrolyte photothermal hydrogel consisting of sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA), [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride (METAC), and polypyrrole (PPy) with anti-biofouling and antibacterial properties is developed. Crediting sufficient ammonium groups and zwitterionic segments, the optimized polyelectrolyte hydrogel exhibits an ∼90% antibacterial ratio against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) and effectively controls biological contamination. Under 1.0 kW m–2 solar irradiation, a rapid water evaporation rate of ∼1.690 kg m–2 h–1 and a high solar-to-evaporation efficiency of ∼95.94% are achieved with the photothermal hydrogel. We show that a lab-made setup integrated with the hydrogel can realize ∼0.455 kg m–2 h–1 freshwater production from seawater under natural sunlight. A 3D self-floating solar vapor generator based on a novel self-healing aero-hydrogel containing peach gum polysaccharide with durability and continuous operation

Abstract:Solar energy interfacial evaporation represents a promising and sustainable approach with considerable potential for seawater desalination and wastewater treatment. Nonetheless, creating durable evaporators for continuous operation presents a challenge. Motivated by natural self-healing mechanisms, this study developed a novel 3D hybrid aero-hydrogel, which exhibited a self-healing efficiency of 89.4 % and an elongation at break post-healing of 637.7 %, featuring self-healing capabilities and continuous operation potential. Especially, the incorporation of hyperbranched water-soluble polymers (peach gum polysaccharide) endow the final solar water evaporators with a lower evaporation enthalpy of water, resulting in that the refined SVG3, with a notable water surface architecture and an expanded evaporation area, achieved a steam generation rate of 2.13 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 Sun. Notably, SVG2 achieved a high evaporation rate of 2.43 kg m-2 h-1 with the combined energy input of 1 Sun and 6 V, significantly surpassing the rate of 1.96 kg m-2 h-1 without voltage input. The results indicate that electrical energy significantly enhances and synergizes with SVG, facilitating continuous operation both day and night through the combined use of solar energy and electrical input. This study offers insightful perspectives for the strategic design of multifunctional hydrogels for solar water evaporation.
