Abstract:The use of magnetic nanomaterials (MNPs) as adsorbents to eliminate pollution causing dyes from water has attracted substantial attention in recent years because they can be easily isolated and reused. In this work, core–shell Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 MNPs in which magnetic Fe 3 O 4 NPs as a core enclosed with a thick SiO 2 shell were successfully synthesized by chemical co–precipitation followed by hydrolysis and condensation of alkoxysilanes in a mixture of ammonia, ethanol and water. The formation of core–shell Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 MNPs has been characterized by TEM, TEM-EDS, XRD, FT-IR and VSM. TEM characterization revealed that several Fe 3 O 4 NPs (around 10 nm) aggregated to form a Fe 3 O 4 magnetic core and surrounded by an uniform SiO 2 shell of 40-50 nm thickness to obtain Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 magnetic core–shell NPs. As synthesized core–shell NPs were employed as adsorbent for elimination of two cationic toxic dyes, crystal violet (CV) and malachite green (MG) from aqueous solutions. Further, different adsorption parameters such as pH, adsorbent dosage and contact times of the dyes were found to enhance the adsorption of cationic dyes. At neutral pH 7 the cationic dyes could be speedily removed from aqueous solution with high efficiency. It has been observed that 0.35 g of adsorbent dosage is sufficient for 95% of dye removal efficiency. The contact time is optimised for 20 min for both the dyes. The Langmuir model adsorption isotherm is best suitable which indicates that the cationic dyes adsorption behaviour of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 is a homogeneous monolayer chemisorption process. The adsorptive binding of CV/MG with Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 was directed through electrostatic interactions. Moreover, the magnetic adsorbents could be easily reused and regenerated with almost no adsorption capability is significantly reduced up to 5 cycles. So, the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 is an efficient and reusable adsorbent for rapid and removal of cationic dyes from the aqueous solution.

Abstract:In this work, a kind of novel full biodegradable magnetic adsorbent based on glutamic acid modified chitosan and silica coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles was prepared successfully by a one-step method. The structure of the glutamic acid modified chitosan magnetic composite microspheres (CS-Glu-MCMs) was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and equilibrium swelling experiment. Then, CS-Glu-MCM was employed as adsorbent for removal of three different kinds of cationic dyes, methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV) and cationic light yellow 7GL (7GL), from aqueous solutions. Compared with chitosan magnetic composite microspheres (CS-MCMs) without modification, CS-Glu-MCM shows much higher dye uptakes. The fundamental adsorption experiments reveal that CS-Glu-MCM is more efficient in dye removal at pH higher than 5.0. Adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics of CS-Glu-MCM are all well described by Langmuir model and the pseudo-second order model, respectively, which indicates that the dyes adsorption behavior of CS-Glu-MCM is a homogeneous monolayer chemisorption process. Furthermore, the magnetic adsorbents could be easily regenerated at lower pH and reused with almost no loss of adsorption capacity. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Hollow Polyaniline Microsphere/MnO2/Fe3O4 Nanocomposites in Adsorptive Removal of Toxic Dyes from Contaminated Water

Abstract:Dyes are considered as recalcitrant compounds and are not easily removed through conventional water treatment processes. The present study demonstrated the fabrication of polyaniline hollow microsphere (PNHM)/MnO2/Fe3O4 composites by in situ deposition of MnO2 and Fe3O4 nanoparticles on the surface of PNHM. The physicochemical characteristics and adsorption behavior of the prepared PNHM/MnO2/Fe3O4 composites towards the removal of toxic methyl green (MG) and Congo red (CR) dyes have been investigated. The characterization study revealed the successful synthesis of the prepared PNHM/MnO2/Fe3O4 adsorbent with a high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 191.79 m2/g. The batch adsorption study showed about 88 and 98% adsorption efficiencies for MG and CR dyes, respectively, at an optimum dose of 1 g/L of PNHM/MnO2/Fe3O4 at pH ∼6.75 at room temperature (303 ± 3 K). The adsorption phenomena of MG and CR dyes were well described by the Elovich and pseudo-second-order kinetics, respectively, and Freundlich isotherm model. The thermodynamics study shows that the adsorption reactions were endothermic and spontaneous in nature. The maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax) for MG and CR dyes was observed as 1142.13 and 599.49 mg/g, respectively. The responsible adsorption mechanisms involved in dye removal were electrostatic interaction, ion exchange, and the formation of the covalent bonds. The coexisting ion study revealed that the presence of phosphate co-ion considerably reduced the CR dye removal efficiency. However, the desorption-regeneration study demonstrated the successful reuse of the spent PNHM/MnO2/Fe3O4 material for the adsorption of MG and CR dyes for several cycles. Given the aforementioned findings, the PNHM/MnO2/Fe3O4 nanocomposites could be considered as a promising adsorbent for the remediation of dye-contaminated water.

Abstract:Sinai copper ore with 9.48 % of Fe 2 O 3 was treated using a laboratory-scale mineral processing techniques that included size reduction (below 75 μm) and a wet low intensity drum-type magnetic separation. After this treatment method, the separated magnetite product containing about 85 % of Fe 2 O 3 was extracted. A mixture of heated glauconite (900 °C/2h) and the extracted magnetite was activated by sodium silicate (Na 2 SiO 3 ) to obtain a novel glauconite-based magnetic geopolymer (namely GMG). Several analytical techniques (i.e., XRD, XRF, FESEM, FTIR, EDX, TEM, elemental mapping, and zeta potential) were used in the characterization of GMG and its performance for crystal violet (CRV) remediation was studied. The equilibrium data at pH 8.0 and 25 – 50 °C were fitted to a statistical physics multilayer model and classical isotherm equations to understand the CRV adsorption mechanism. The theoretical calculations indicated that GMG can adsorb 1.12 to 1.39 of CRV molecules per functional group ( n ), suggesting the presence of a multi-interaction mechanism and vertical adsorption orientation on GMG surface. For this basic dye, the estimated saturation adsorption capacities ( Q sat ) ranged from 684 to 612 mg/g, and an exothermic binding interaction was associated with the removal of this dye molecule. The adsorption energies (Δ E ) ranged between 15.05 and 36.74 kJ/mol, indicating that physical forces, such as electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds, governed the GMG-CRV interactions. After fourth adsorption–desorption cycles, the regenerated GMG showed 74 % of its adsorption capacities, which suggested the suitability of this adsorbent to be regenerated and reused multiple times in water treatment. Abstract:Novel magnetic sodium alginate-based biopolymer Fe3O4@SA-Fe was successfully prepared by the cross-linking reaction of sodium alginate (SA) and Fe(III) ions and adding magnetic ferric oxide (Fe3O4), and characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS), Fourier Transform-Infrared (FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM), respectively. The effects of preparation and adsorption conditions on the adsorbent were investigated by adsorbing Congo red (CR) and Direct red 23 (DR 23) dyes. The results showed that the synthesized Fe3O4@SA-Fe polymer gel beads exhibited super-high adsorption property and good stability when the mass concentrations of SA, Fe(III) ions and Fe3O4 are 16, 12.5 and 7 g/L at room temperature respectively. The adsorption rates of two dyes by Fe3O4@SA-Fe were very fast at 298 K, and the time required to reach the equilibrium was very short, which was 30 min for CR and 60 min for DR 23. Moreover, the dye removal efficiencies were over 99.4% and 95.2% in a wide pH range of 2.0 ~ 9.0 for CR and 2.0 ~ 10.0 for DR 23, respectively. The adsorption process could be accurately described by the pseudo-second-order rate model, which were mostly controlled by intra-particle diffusion. The fitting results of isothermic data by Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) models revealed that the equilibrium data completely obeyed the Langmuir model and the obtained maximum adsorption capacities of CR and DR 23 were 3333 and 1429 mg/g at 298 K, respectively. FTIR, UV-Vis and XPS analysis indicated that the electrostatic adsorption, hydrogen bonding and ligand exchange promoted the interaction between dye molecules and Fe3O4@SA-Fe. A green magnetic biosorbent Fe3O4@SA-Fe gel beads with simple preparation method and high-cost performance can be used for super-efficient purification of high-concentration dye effluent and quickly separated from the aqueous phase and recovered, which would have a good application prospect.

Abstract:The dyeing effluent of high alkalinity, which could not be treated efficiently by traditional wastewater technologies, highlighted the need to explore a technically feasible, highly efficient and cost effective method. Thus, a fast and highly efficient method for the removal of dyes under alkaline conditions using magnetic chitosan-Fe(III) hydrogel was proposed. Firstly, chitosan-Fe(III) hydrogel was prepared by a chelation procedure with cheap and environmentally friendly chitosan and iron salts. We characterized the sorption and desorption of C. I. Acid Red 73, a common type of anionic dye, on magnetic chitosan-Fe(III) hydrogel, to understand its availability for alkaline dyeing wastewater. Sorption of dye to chitosan-Fe(III) hydrogel was fast (adsorption could reach equilibrium in less than 10 min) in a wide pH range, and agreed well to the Langmuir–Freundlich adsorption model with a high maximum adsorption capacity of 294.5 mg/g under pH = 12. Meanwhile, 1 mol/L NaOH was used to desorb the dye efficiently (desorption efficiency 94.4%) and 0.1 mol/L HCl was applied to regenerate the chitosan-Fe(III) hydrogel. The results showed that the chitosan-Fe(III) hydrogel could retain its high efficiency after the desorption and regeneration. The common coexisting ions almost had no negative effect on the dye adsorption of chitosan-Fe(III) and the removals of a variety of anionic dyes suggest that the magnetic chitosan-Fe(III) hydrogel could efficiently adsorb both the acid and reactive dyes under alkaline condition. Overall, the results reported herein indicated that magnetic chtisoan-Fe(III) with high adsorption efficiency and strong magnetic property is very attractive and implies a potential of practical application for alkaline dyeing effluent treatment.

Abstract:A hybrid hydrogel nanocomposite based on the polysaccharide-gum ghatti, has been made and evaluated as an adsorbent material for wastewater treatment. The nanocomposite is composed of a network of gum ghatti- graft -poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid) with magnetite nanoparticles embedded within. This functional material Ggh- g -PAMPS/Fe 3 O 4 has been characterized by FTIR, TGA, SEM, EDS, XRD, BET and VSM techniques. The presence of magnetite nanoparticles imparted superparamagnetic property to the adsorbent material enabling its easy separation after use with an external magnet. The characterization data indicated mesoporous nature of the nanocomposite adsorbent with mean pore diameter of 4.9 nm. The nanoparticles imparted high surface area to the adsorbent material the value being 4.7 m 2 g −1 based on nitrogen adsorption experiments. The suitability of the material as an adsorbent for removal of cationic dyes from water was checked with two cationic dyes namely, rhodamine 6G and methylene blue. The maximum adsorption capacity of the nanocomposite Ggh- g -PAMPS/Fe 3 O 4 towards rhodamine 6G and methylene blue were observed to be 403.2 and 427.8 mg g −1 respectively from their individual solutions of concentration 500 mg L −1 . The pH dependence on swelling and surface charge indicated medium of pH of 7.0 as the ideal condition for effective adsorption. Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo second order kinetic model are observed to be the most befitting models to describe adsorption. Further, the thermodynamic studies revealed the adsorption to be a spontaneous and endothermic process. The desorption study portrayed the reusability of the adsorbent material. The excellent adsorption performance and magnetic nature of the developed nanocomposite suggests its potential application as an adsorbent material in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The quest for sustainable development and green chemistry had led to the design and synthesis of advanced adsorbent materials for efficient removal of pollutants in industrial effluents. Magnetic halloysite nanotubes with chitosan nanocomposite sponges were prepared by combining solution-mixing and freeze-drying. Magnetic@chitosan/halloysite (Fe3O4–HNT/CS) and spongelike chitosan/halloysite (HNT/CS) were used as adsorbents for the removal of Congo red dye in aqueous solution in a batch process. The as-prepared composites were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, X-ray diffraction, vibrating-sample magnetometry, thermal gravimetry–differential scanning calorimetry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Data from kinetic study were analyzed with pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models, whereas the mechanism was analyzed using Bangham’s, Elovich’s, intraparticle, and double-exponential diffusion models. The equilibrium data were evaluated using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherm models. The adsorption kinetics of dye removal followed the pseudo-first-order model with average rate constants of 0.260 and 0.196 min–1 for Fe3O4–HNT/CS and HNT/CS, respectively. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm best fitted the equilibrium data with R2 > 0.9 with maximum adsorption capacities of 41.54 and 54.49 mg g–1 obtained for HNT/CS and Fe3O4–HNT/CS, respectively. Negative values of ΔG° obtained from thermodynamic studies revealed that the adsorption process was spontaneous. The values of ΔH° and ΔS° obtained for Congo red dye removal were 69.46 and 39.54 kJ mol–1 and 240.5 and 145.1 J mol–1 K–1 for HNT/CS and Fe3O4–HNT/CS, respectively. The results indicated that CS–HNT is an excellent adsorbent; however, its magnetic modification further improved its recyclability and enhanced the performance for the removal of Congo red dye from aqueous solution.

Efficient removal of noxious methylene blue and crystal violet dyes at neutral conditions by reusable montmorillonite/NiFe2O4@amine-functionalized chitosan composite

Abstract:The jeopardy of the synthetic dyes effluents on human health and the environment has swiftly aggravated, threatening human survival. Hence, sustained studies have figured out the most acceptable way to eliminate this poisonous contaminant. Thereby, our investigation aimed to fabricate montmorillonite/magnetic NiFe 2 O 4 @amine-functionalized chitosan (MMT-mAmCs) composite as a promising green adsorbent to remove the cationic methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV) dyes from the wastewater in neutral conditions. Interestingly, MMT-mAmCs composite carries high negative charges at a wide pH range from 4 to 11 as clarified from zeta potential measurements, asserting its suitability to adsorb the cationic contaminants. In addition, the experimental study confirmed that the optimum pH to adsorb both MB and CV was pH 7, inferring the ability of MMT-mAmCs to adsorb both cationic dyes in simple process conditions. Furthermore, the ferromagnetic behavior of the MMT-mAmCs composite is additional merit to our adsorbent that provides facile, fast, and flawless separation. Notably, the as-fabricated composite revealed an auspicious adsorbability towards the adsorptive removal of MB and CV, since the maximum adsorption capacity of MB and CV were 137 and 118 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, the isotherm and kinetic investigatins depicted that the adsorption of both cationic dyes fitted Langmuir and Pseudo 2nd order models, respectively. Besides, the advanced adsorbent preserved satisfactory adsorption characteristics with maximal removal efficacy exceeding 87% after reuse for ten consecutive cycles. More importantly, MMT-mAmCs efficiently adsorbed MB and CV from real agricultural water, Nile river water and wastewater samples at the neutral pH medium, reflecting its potentiality to be a superb reusable candidate for adsorptive removal cationic pollutants from their aquatic media.

Facile synthesis, characterization and application of magnetic Fe3O4-coir pith composites for the removal of methyl violet from aqueous solution: Kinetics, isotherm, thermodynamics and parametric optimization

Abstract:Dyes are commonly used in coloring clothes; in fertilizers, as anti-freezers, as detergents and so on. The use of such dyes has carcinogenic and genotoxic effects. These dyes require proper removal from the environment. Subsequently, a green and low-cost approach promises to adhere to sustainability of the environment while maximum removal of these toxic dyes. The present study describes removal of methyl violet (MV) dye by adsorption process magnetically separable Fe3O4-coir pith composites. The study was evaluated in batch system taking the optimum conditions as: pH: 7, contact time: 12 h, stirring speed: 200 rpm, concentration of dye: 100 mg/L, adsorbent weight: 3 g/L, temp.: 308 K. The central composite design approach of response surface methodology in design-expert software showed maximum removal efficiency (>98%) for optimal parameters. The experimental equilibrium data fitted reasonably well to Langmuir isotherm model. ANOVA analysis along with Fisher's statistical test was also performed to validate the model. The predicted model was at par with the experimental values with adjusted R2 of 0.9914. A thorough investigation of kinetic ( R Pseudo second order 2 = 0.99; R Pseudo second order 2 = 0.97 ; R intra − particle diffusion 2 = 0.98 ) , thermodynamic, adsorption isotherm ( R Langmuir isotherm 2 = 0.997 R Freundlich isotherm 2 = 0.99 and eco-toxicological characteristics were performed for proper evaluations of the properties as well as sustainability of the adsorbent material. The whole research indicated encouraging potential of the developed material for adsorption, reusability and sustainability in applications for industrial scale wastewater treatment.

Synthesis of magnetically tuneable molybdic acid-functionalized Fe3O4 nanoparticles for efficient dye removal in aqueous media

Abstract:Textile dyes like rose bengal (RB) are infamous sources of pollution in the environment due to their persistence and toxicity. In this study, we explored the use of molybdic acid (MA)-functionalized iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) for the removal of RB dye from wastewater through the adsorption process. Nanoparticles were synthesized using a facile and cost-effective precipitation method and well-characterized for structural, magnetic and surface behaviours using XRD, FTIR, XPS, BET, HRTEM and VSM techniques. Adsorption properties of the nanoparticles were evaluated by varying the parameters, such as initial dye concentration, pH and contact time. Results showed that the MNPs had a high adsorption capacity for RB dye removal at 4 × 10 −5 M concentration with an uptake of up to 89% within 100 min. At the optimal operation conditions, MA-functionalized Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 60 mg g −1 for RB dye, which is significant in comparison with the reported literature. Isotherm studies indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous, exothermic and favoured at room temperature. It is also deduced that the process that occurred was physisorption, primarily the result of electrostatic attractions. Overall, this study suggests that MA-functionalized iron oxide nanoparticles have the potential to be an efficient material for the removal of textile dyes from wastewater. Graphical Molybdic acid functionalized Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles prepared through facile co-precipitation method shows intriguing electrostatic interaction with anionic rose Bengal dye. The interaction gets stronger at low pH due to extremely protonated surface of the adsorbent.

Abstract:A novel adsorbent of CaFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) was synthesized as an efficient adsorbent to removal dye pollutants, cationic dye (crystal violet, CV) and acid dye (congo red, CR) were investigated in single and binary systems. Adsorption tests showed that CaFe2O4 MNPs presented an excellent high affinity to CR (efficiency of CR removal, 96.1%), while CV was hardly adsorbed in single system. The remarkably high adsorption efficiency of CR dyes on CaFe2O4 is rationalized on the basis of H-bonding interactions as well as dipole-dipole between adsorbent and acid dye molecules. In a binary dye system, CaFe2O4 showed enhanced adsorption for CV, and the adsorption percentage for CV increased from 5.0% to 30.4%. The enhanced adsorption was attributed to the synergistic effect due to the electronic attraction between CV and CR, which promoted CV co-adsorption on CaFe2O4. Because of the excellent regeneration capacity the CaFe2O4 MNPs are considered to be interesting materials for the uptake of, for instance, toxic dyes from wastewater. Abstract:This work describes a simple technique for producing bio-synthesized Magnesium oxide modified magnetite nanoparticles (MgO@MNPs) for the removal of AO dyes using Almond ( Terminalia catappa ) leaf extract (ALE). ALE is employed as capping, stabilizing, and reducing agent. This work presents an investigation of the removal of dye using nanoparticles. In this study synthesized nanoparticles get characterized using various analytical techniques such as UV–Vis, XRD, FT-IR, TGA, SEM, EDX, and VSM. The adsorption conditions were tuned for the maximal removal of AO dyes by altering many physicochemical factors, including pH (8.0), initial concentration of AO dye (30 mg/L), MgO@MNPs dosage (8 mg), contact time (8 min), and reaction temperature (298 K). The results of isotherm study indicated that Langmuir model adequately described the adsorption process and effectively removed the dye with a high adsorption capacity (q max ) 526.31 mg/g. Additionally, the study evaluated the kinetic and thermodynamic aspects of the adsorption process. Moreover, the adsorption process was found to be spontaneous, exothermic, and followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. HCl was found to be an effective desorbing agent in the desorption experiment. The adsorbent could be reused for seven cycles effectively with at least 96% removal of AO dye. The comparison table provided in this work further highlights the effectiveness of the present study. Overall, this study offers a promising approach for the efficient removal of AO dye from wastewater, with potential for practical applications in the field of wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In this work, a novel adsorbent called magnetite/MXene (Fe3O4/Ti3C2) nanocomposite was prepared, characterized, and applied for the removal of organic dye, malachite green dye (MG), from both real water and model solutions. Numerous techniques were used to characterize the prepared Fe3O4/Ti3C2 nanocomposite: XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, and surface area analysis. The outcomes showed that the Al layer had been selectively etched, that the MAX phase (Ti3AlC2) had been transformed into layered Ti3C2 MXene, that the cubic Fe3O4 phase had been prepared, and that the prepared Fe3O4 NPs had been evenly distributed on the MXene surface. Also, SEM pictures showed the successful etching of the MAX phase and the formation of the ultrathin multi-layered MXene, which the Fe3O4 NPs covered upon forming the Fe3O4/Ti3C2 nanocomposite at the surface and inside the ultrathin multi-layered MXene. The effect of different operational parameters affecting the removal process was explored and optimized. The MG dye was removed mostly within 60 min, with a 4.68 mg/g removal capacity using 5 mg of the Fe3O4/Ti3C2 nanocomposite. The removal was examined from both kinetic and thermodynamic perspectives, and the findings demonstrated the spontaneity of the removal process as well as the applicability of fractal-like pseudo-first-order and fractal-like pseudo-second-order kinetics when compared to other kinetics models. The Fe3O4/Ti3C2 nanocomposite was used to remove MG dye from real spiked environmental water samples, and the results revealed the successful remediation of the real samples from the organic dye by the Fe3O4/Ti3C2 nanocomposite. Accordingly, Fe3O4/Ti3C2 nanocomposite could be considered a potential adsorbent for the environmental remediation of polluted water.

Abstract:Release of industrial effluents comprising dyes in water bodies is one of the foremost causes of water pollution. Therefore, the proper and proficient treatment of these dyes contaminated left-over material before their release is crucial. Herein, an eco-friendly biological macromolecule Gum-Acacia (GA) integrated Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles composite hydrogel was manufactured via co-precipitation technique for effective adsorption of Congo red (CR) dye existing in water bodies. The as-prepared magnetic GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel was characterized by FTIR, XRD, EDX, VSM, SEM, and BET techniques. These studies discovered the fruitful fabrication of biodegradable magnetic GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel possessing porous structure with large surface area (21.78 m 2 /g) and enough saturated magnetization value (24.5 emu/g) for the efficient elimination of CR. The magnetic GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel showed higher adsorption (96.3%) of CR as compared to pristine Fe 3 O 4 (45%) in 50 min at pH 6 with 0.02 g of adsorbent and 100 ppm CR. The data obtained from the adsorption of CR over GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel have a linear relationship, following the pseudo second-order kinetic model (R 2 =0.990) and Freundlich adsorption isotherm model (R 2 =0.983). The evaluated factors of thermodynamic recommended that the experiments were favourable, spontaneous, and exothermic in nature. In addition, the biodegradable magnetic GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel also exhibited excellent desorption as well as recyclability owing to its amazing robust magnetic nature. What is more, the GA/Fe 3 O 4 composite hydrogel reserved the same % adsorption proficiency (>96.3%) up to several repeated rounds, proving its potential applicability for water purgative at domestic plus industrial level.

Abstract:In this current work, the magnetic composite microsphere containing glutamine modified chitosan and silica coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles (CS-Gln-MCM) has been successfully prepared and extensively characterized, which is a kind of biodegradable materials. CS-Gln-MCM shows enhanced removal efficiency for both acid green 25 (AG25), an amphoteric dye, and mercury ions (Hg(2+)) from water in the respective while measured pH range compared with chitosan magnetic composite microsphere (CS-MCM) without modification. It is due to the fact that the grafted amino acid provides a variety of additional adsorption active sites and diverse adsorption mechanisms are involved. In AG25 and Hg(2+) aqueous mixture, the modified adsorbents bear preferential adsorption for AG25 over Hg(2+) in strong acidic solutions ascribed to multiple interactions between AG25 and CS-Gln-MCM, such as hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. While, in weak acidic conditions, an efficient simultaneous removal is observed for different adsorption effects involved in aforementioned two pollutants. Besides, CS-Gln-MCM illuminates not only short equilibrium time for adsorption of each pollutant less than 20.0 min but also rapid magnetic separation from water and efficient regeneration after saturated adsorption. Therefore, CS-Gln-MCM bears great application potentials in water treatment.

Abstract:Superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles coated with Green Tea Polyophenols (GTP), i.e. Fe3O4@GTPs NPs were synthesized by wet-chemical method with eco-friendly and environmentally benign approach. The coated NPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). These analyses revealed that the particles were of uniform shapes and sizes of 10±3nm with a coating of GTPs. The vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM) measurement of the coated sample demonstrated a saturation magnetization of 61emu/g with negligible coercivity (∼0.001T) and retentivity (∼0.9emu/g) indicating superparamagnetic behavior the NPs at room temperature. The synthesized NPs were highly stable and well-dispersed in aqueous medium through their hydrophilic coating of GTPs. These particles showed high adsorption capacity (7.25mg/g) for removal of methylene blue (MB) dye in wastewater treatment. The sorption dynamic and equilibrium data were in good agreement with the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models respectively. In addition, the particles could be easily separated from the liquid medium through magnetic separation and potentially reused in multiple cycles.

Abstract:The present research comprises the fabrication of magnetic Fe3O4 incorporated chitosan grafted acrylamide and N-vinylimidazole composite hydrogels (CANFe-1 to CANFe-7) via water mediated free radical polymerization technique using ammonium persulfate/tetramethyl ethylenediamine as initiator. The prepared magnetic composite hydrogel was characterized by FT-IR, TGA, SEM, XRD, and VSM analysis. A swelling study was performed to understand the swelling behavior and found CANFe-4 to be more efficient with maximum swelling hence entire removal studies were performed with CANFe-4. pHPZC analysis was performed to determine pH sensitive adsorptive removal of cationic dye (methylene blue). pH dependent adsorption of methylene blue was dominant at pH = 8 with a maximum adsorption capacity of 860 mg/g. After the adsorptive removal of methylene blue from aqueous media, a composite hydrogel can conveniently be separated from the solution with the use of an external magnet. Adsorption of methylene blue is well explained with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and Pseudo-Second-Order kinetic model that validates chemisorption. Moreover, it was found that CANFe-4 could be frequently applied for the adsorptive removal of methylene blue for 5 consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles with 92.4 % removal efficiency. Hence, CANFe-4 offers a promising recyclable, sustainable, robust, and efficient adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:We report a facile design and synthesis of magnetic iron oxide (IO) incorporated chitosan-graphene oxide (CSGO) hydrogel nanocomposites (CSGOIO) by employing in situ mineralization of iron ions in a hydrogel matrix. The mechanism of their formation was investigated by various physical methods, viz., FTIR, XRD, VSM, TGA, SEM, TEM, and BET. This approach was shown to have a direct impact on the morphological features and the structural order of the nanocomposites. The potential of the prepared nanocomposites for effective removal of a cationic dye, methylene blue (MB), from aqueous solution was investigated by performing a series of batch adsorption experiments, in line with the effect of adsorbent dosage, initial dye concentration, contact time, pH, ionic strength, and temperature. The adsorption was fairly influenced by the pH and ionic strength of the medium, indicating an electrostatic interaction between the adsorbent and MB molecules. The kinetics of adsorption followed a pseudo-second-order model, and equilibrium capacity was described by the Freundlich adsorption model. Interestingly, the nanocomposites exhibited a fast removal performance with a rate constant of 0.06 g mg–1 min–1. The hydrogel nanocomposites were found to possess an excellent adsorptive property after four successive cycles at different pH of the solution, thus providing a cost-effective material for dye removal applications. Therefore, this material, enabling dye removal in a wide variety of solution conditions, offered a promising platform for sustainable development of water purification technology.

Abstract:In this work, we designed novel chitosan-g-poly-(IA-co-DADMAC)/Fe3O4 polymer composite hydrogel using in situ ultrasonic wave-assisted polymerization method and applied for the uptake of methylene blue (MB) and congo red (CR) dyes from aqueous solution. The polymer composite hydrogel was characterized via FT-IR, XRD, TGA, FE-SEM, BET and VSM analysis. More interestingly, dyes can be efficiently adsorbed and after adsorption conveniently separated from solution by using external magnet. For dye adsorption studies, congo red (anionic dye) and methylene blue dyes (cationic dye) were taken as the target pollutant. Adsorption isotherm followed Fruendlich model with 862.06 mg/g and 1111.11 mg/g, respectively, adsorption capacity and the adsorption kinetics was most appropriately explained using pseudo-second-order kinetic model.
