Abstract:While growing two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) on substrates holds promise for producing functional monolayers, the presence of many defects in the resulting crystals often hinders their practical applications. Achieving structural order while suppressing defect formation necessitates a detailed atomic-level understanding. The key lies in understanding the polymerization process with high nano-scale accuracy, which presents significant challenges. Here, we perform microsecond atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to describe the deposition and polymerization of cyclohexa-m-phenylene on metal substrates, closely mimicking experimental conditions. Our improved approach highlights that 2D polymerization occurs through monomer addition and island coalescence, with a pre-bonding stage allowing monomers/oligomers to dynamically adjust their configurations to the expanding island structures. Our results elucidate the mechanisms underlying the formation of vacancy and dislocation defects during 2D polymerization as well as their healing processes. Overall, our findings underscore the significant roles that high surface mobility, effective monomer-substrate anchoring, high framework rigidity, moderate monomer coordination, and low bonding rate play in forming large, extended 2D crystals while suppressing vacancy and dislocation defects. We demonstrate how these factors can be tuned through substrate selection, deposition rate modulation, and temperature control, thereby offering valuable insight for strategically optimizing on-surface 2D polymerizations.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a promising class of crystalline polymer networks that are useful due to their high porosity, versatile functionality, and tunable architecture. Conventional solution-based methods of producing COFs are marred by slow reactions that produce powders that are difficult to process into adaptable form factors for functional applications, and there is a need for facile and fast synthesis techniques for making crystalline and ordered covalent organic framework (COF) thin films. In this work, we report a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach utilizing co-evaporation of two monomers onto a heated substrate to produce highly crystalline, defect-free COF films and coatings with hydrazone, imine, and ketoenamine COF linkages. This all-in-one synthesis technique produces highly crystalline, 40 nm-1 μm-thick COF films on Si/SiO2 substrates in less than 30 min. Crystallinity and alignment were proven by using a combination of grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and successful conversion of the monomers to produce the target COF was supported by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-vis measurements. Additionally, we used atomic force microscopy (AFM) to investigate the growth mechanisms of these films, showing the coalescence of triangular crystallites into a smooth film. To show the wide applicability and scope of the CVD process, we also prepared crystalline ordered COF films with imine and ketoenamine linkages. These films show potential as high-quality size exclusion membranes, catalytic platforms, and organic transistors.

Probing Defects in Covalent Organic Frameworks

Abstract:Defects in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) play a pivotal role in determining their properties and performance, significantly influencing interactions with adsorbates, guest molecules, and substrates as well as affecting charge carrier dynamics and light absorption characteristics. The present review focuses on the diverse array of techniques employed for characterizing and quantifying defects in COFs, addressing a critical need in the field of materials science. As will be discussed in this review, there are basically two types of defects referring either to missing organic moieties leaving free binding groups in the material or structural imperfections resulting in lower crystallinity, grain boundary defects, and incomplete stacking. The review summarizes an in-depth analysis of state-of-the-art characterization techniques, elucidating their specific strengths and limitations for each defect type. Key techniques examined in this review include powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), scanning tunneling microscope (STM), high resolution transmission electron microcoe (HRTEM), gas adsorption, acid-base titration, advanced electron microscopy methods, and computational calculations. We critically assess the capability of each technique to provide qualitative and quantitative information about COF defects, offering insights into their complementary nature and potential for synergistic use. The last section summarizes the main concepts of the review and provides perspectives for future development to overcome the existing challenges.
Designed Synthesis of Double-Stage Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emerging class of crystalline porous polymers in which organic building blocks are covalently and topologically linked to form extended crystalline polygon structures, constituting a new platform for designing π-electronic porous materials. However, COFs are currently synthesised by a few chemical reactions, limiting the access to and exploration of new structures and properties. The development of new reaction systems that avoid such limitations to expand structural diversity is highly desired. Here we report that COFs can be synthesised via a double-stage connection that polymerises various different building blocks into crystalline polygon architectures, leading to the development of a new type of COFs with enhanced structural complexity and diversity. We show that the double-stage approach not only controls the sequence of building blocks but also allows fine engineering of pore size and shape. This strategy is widely applicable to different polymerisation systems to yield hexagonal, tetragonal and rhombus COFs with predesigned pores and π-arrays.

Abstract:The properties of polycrystalline materials are often dominated by defects, and two-dimensional (2D) crystals can even be divided and disrupted by a line defect 1-3 . In contrast, 2D crystals are often required to be processed into films, which are inevitably polycrystalline and contain numerous grain boundaries, and therefore are brittle and fragile, hindering application in flexible electronics, optoelectronics and separation 1-4 . Moreover, similar to glass, wood, and plastics, they suffer from trade-off effects between mechanical strength and toughness. 5, 6 Here, we report a method to produce highly strong, tough and elastic films of an emerging class of 2D crystals - 2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) composed of single-crystal domains connected by interwoven grain boundary on water surface using an aliphatic bi-amine as a sacrificial go-between. Films of two 2DCOFs were demonstrated, which showed Young's moduli and breaking strength of 56.7 ± 7.4 GPa and 73.4 ± 11.6 GPa, and 82.2 ± 9.1 N/m and 29.5 ± 7.2 N/m, respectively. We envisage the sacrificial go-between guided synthesis method and the interwoven grain boundary will inspire grain boundary enigineering of various polycrystalline materials, endowing them with new properties, enhancing their current applications and paving the way for new applications.

Abstract:Grain boundaries (GBs) in two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) unavoidably form during the fabrication process, playing pivotal roles in the physical characteristics of COFs. Herein, molecular dynamics simulations were employed to elucidate the fracture failure and thermal transport mechanisms of polycrystalline COFs (p-COFs). The results revealed that the tilt angle of GBs significantly influences out-of-plane wrinkles and residual stress in monolayer p-COFs. The tensile strength of p-COFs can be enhanced and weakened with the tilt angle, which exhibits an inverse relationship with the defect density. The crack always originates from weaker heptagon rings during uniaxial tension. Notably, the thermal transport in p-COFs is insensitive to the GBs due to the variation of minor polymer chain length at defects, which is abnormal for other 2D crystalline materials. This study contributes insights into the impact of GBs in p-COFs and offers theoretical guidance for structural design and practical applications of advanced COFs.

Abstract:Porous polymeric covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been under intense synthetic investigation with over 100 unique structural motifs known. In order to realize the true potential of these materials, converting the powders into thin films with strict control of thickness and morphology is necessary and accomplished through techniques including interfacial synthesis, chemical exfoliation and mechanical delamination. Recent progress in the construction and tailored properties of thin film COFs are highlighted in this review, addressing mechanical properties as well as application-focused properties in filtration, electronics, sensors, electrochemical, magnetics, optoelectronics and beyond. Additionally, heterogeneous integration of these thin films with other inorganic and organic materials is discussed, revealing exciting opportunities to integrate COF thin films with other state of the art material and device systems.
Cellulose Nanocrystals as Template for Improving the Crystallinity of Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Framework Films

Abstract:Despite the rapid development of two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) in recent years, it remains a great challenge to synthesize highly crystalline COF materials. Here, a CNC-assisted approach was adopted to synthesize high crystallinity COF materials. A series of 2D COF films were synthesized at the air–water interface by using cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as the template. The occurrence of Schiff reactions based on the imine bond was demonstrated by Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) exhibited the appearances of 2D COF films were flower-like. When CNCs were added to a certain extent, the size of a single petal in the flowers gradually increased with the amount of CNCs. The film with large petals was characterized by Ultraviolet–Visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). In UV–Vis DRS curves, the S-band of COF-366 film was red-shifted by 24 nm compared with that of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)-21H,23H-porphyrin (TAPP), confirming the existence of extended conjugation in COF-366 film. XPS was used to identify the surface composition of the sample. The N1s signal of the film indicated that each TAPP formed four imine bonds with 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalaldehyde (DHTA) in COF-366 film. TEM images showed that CNCs had an influence on the crystal size. It was observed from SAED that the crystallinity of the film with CNCs was higher than the film without CNCs. This work provided a new template for improving the crystallinity of 2D COF films.

Abstract:The diverse topological structure, designable building blocks, ordered pores and crystalline architecture of the covalent organic frameworks (COFs) make it attractive in many application fields. However, COF materials obtained by solvothermal synthesis are generally poorly soluble powders and difficult to be post-processed, which may impede some applications of COFs. The direct preparation of COF films is effective to overcome the limitations of poor solubility of COFs. This article reviews the synthesis of COF films at interfaces and the applications of COF films. At first, the synthesis strategies for preparing monolayer COF with large crystalline domains on solid substrates are introduced. Then we discuss interface synthesis methods, including solid-liquid, liquid-liquid and liquid-gas interface, for various COF films. Subsequently, the applications of COF film in many fields such as photoelectric conversion, fluorescence, electronic devices, chemical sensing, electrocatalysis, and molecular separation are introduced briefly. Finally, prospects for the interface synthesis and application expansion of COF films are discussed.This article reviews the synthesis strategies for monolayer COF on solid substrates and interface synthesis methods for COF thin films with controlled thickness, uniform morphology and promising crystallinity. Film-form COF are beneficial to realize applications of COF in many fields such as optoelectronic devices, electronic devices, electrocatalysis and molecular separation.

Abstract:It has been a longstanding challenge to rationally synthesize thin films of organic two-dimensional (2D) crystals with large single-crystalline domains. Here, we present a general strategy for the creation of 2D crystals of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) on the water surface, assisted by a charged polymer. The morphology of the preorganized monomers underneath the charged polymer on the water surface and their diffusion were crucial for the formation of the organic 2D crystals. Thin films of 2D COFs with an average single-crystalline domain size of around 3.57 ± 2.57 μm2 have been achieved, and their lattice structure, molecular structure, and grain boundaries were identified with a resolution down to 3 Å. The swing of chain segments and lattice distortion were revealed as key factors in compensating for the misorientation between adjacent grains and facilitating error corrections at the grain boundaries, giving rise to larger single-crystalline domains. The generality of the synthesis method was further proved with three additional 2D COFs. The oriented single-crystalline domains and clear grain boundaries render the films as model materials to study the dependence of the vertical conductivity of organic 2D crystals on domain sizes and chemical structures, and significant grain boundary effects were illustrated. This study presents a breakthrough in the controlled synthesis of organic 2D crystals with structural control at the molecular level. We envisage that this work will inspire further investigation into the microstructure-intrinsic property correlation of 2D COFs and boost their application in electronics.

Abstract:Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) are a class of modular polymeric crystals with high porosities and large surface areas. Their tunable microstructure (with a wide array of choices for the molecular building block) provides the opportunity for their bottom-up design and potentially tailorable physical properties. In this work, through combined density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we study the influence of different molecular functional groups and varying porosities on the electronic and thermal properties of 2D COFs. More specifically, by performing DFT calculations on 24 different 2D COFs, we demonstrate that one of the main descriptors dictating their band gaps are their mass densities or network porosities. Furthermore, we also find that specific functional groups forming the nodes can lead to larger localization of charge densities resulting in wider band gaps. By performing MD simulations to investigate their thermal properties, we show that (similar to their electronic properties) mass density is also one of the main factors dictating heat conduction, where higher densities are associated with relatively higher thermal conductivities along the 2D sheets. Our spectral energy density calculations provide insights into the highly anharmonic nature of these materials. We find that increasing porosities lead to larger anharmonic interactions and thus reduced thermal conductivities in these materials. Similar to their electronic band gaps, the nodes forming the 2D COFs also have a significant contribution in dictating their thermal conductivities with bigger nodes (accompanied by higher densities) generally resulting in relatively higher thermal conductivities in 2D COFs. Taken together, the resulting changes in the electronic and thermal properties from variations in the building blocks in 2D COFs lend insights into fundamental changes in the microscopic thermodynamics that arise from systematically changing their molecular structure. Therefore, our study provides a blueprint for the strategic syntheses of 2D COFs with “user-defined” electronic and thermal properties that will ultimately aide in their incorporation into various applications.

Analysis of COF-300 synthesis: probing degradation processes and 3D electron diffraction structure

Abstract:Although COF-300 is often used as an example to study the synthesis and structure of (3D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs), knowledge of the underlying synthetic processes is still fragmented. Here, an optimized synthetic procedure based on a combination of linker protection and modulation was applied. Using this approach, the influence of time and temperature on the synthesis of COF-300 was studied. Synthesis times that were too short produced materials with limited crystallinity and porosity, lacking the typical pore flexibility associated with COF-300. On the other hand, synthesis times that were too long could be characterized by loss of crystallinity and pore order by degradation of the tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)methane (TAM) linker used. The presence of the degradation product was confirmed by visual inspection, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). As TAM is by far the most popular linker for the synthesis of 3D COFs, this degradation process might be one of the reasons why the development of 3D COFs is still lagging compared with 2D COFs. However, COF crystals obtained via an optimized procedure could be structurally probed using 3D electron diffraction (3DED). The 3DED analysis resulted in a full structure determination of COF-300 at atomic resolution with satisfying data parameters. Comparison of our 3DED-derived structural model with previously reported single-crystal X-ray diffraction data for this material, as well as parameters derived from the Cambridge Structural Database, demonstrates the high accuracy of the 3DED method for structure determination. This validation might accelerate the exploitation of 3DED as a structure determination technique for COFs and other porous materials.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a functional material class able to harness, convert and store energy. However, after almost 20 years of research, there are no coherent prediction rules for their synthesis conditions. This is partly because of an incomplete picture of nucleation and growth at the early stages of formation. Here we use the optical technique interferometric scattering microscopy (iSCAT) 1,2,3 for in operando studies of COF polymerization and framework formation. We observe liquid–liquid phase separation, pointing to the existence of structured solvents in the form of surfactant-free (micro)emulsions in conventional COF synthesis. Our findings show that the role of solvents extends beyond solubility to being kinetic modulators by compartmentation of reactants and catalyst. Taking advantage of these observations, we develop a synthesis protocol for COFs using room temperature instead of elevated temperatures. This work connects framework synthesis with liquid phase diagrams and thereby enables an active design of the reaction environment, emphasizing that visualization of chemical reactions by means of light-scattering-based techniques can be a powerful approach for advancing rational materials synthesis.

Abstract:Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) are crystalline organic porous materials stacked in a layered fashion. In general, these materials have excellent structural tunability, which can be achieved through the various tools of organic synthesis. Their layered and porous nature makes them attractive candidates for electronics, optoelectronics, and catalysis. However, their application is still limited due to relatively poor π-delocalization and practical applications require controlling and tuning their electronic structure. In this paper, using hybrid density functional theory, we computationally explore a novel 2D COF architecture, consisting of only two crystalline atomic layers made of benzene, boroxine, and triazine rings. We study the intercalation of first-row transition metals in the bilayer to enhance and finetune their electronic and magnetic behavior. This resulted in the development of one pristine bilayer, 63 intercalated bilayers, and one trilayer 2D COF. We found that the concentration and position of transition metals in the structure can drastically change the 2D COFs' electronic, magnetic, and spintronic features. Based on their spin-polarized electronic properties, these transition metal-intercalated 2D COFs have potential applications as water-splitting catalysts, direct semiconductors in the visible range, half metals, half semiconductors, and bipolar magnetic semiconductors.

Abstract:The pursuit of atomic precision structure of porous covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is the key to understanding the relationship between structures and properties, and further developing new materials with superior performance. Yet, a challenge of how to determine their atomic structures has always existed since the first COFs reported seventeen years ago. Here, we present a universal method for ab initio structure determination of polycrystalline three-dimensional (3D) COFs at atomic level using enhanced cryo-continuous rotation electron diffraction (cryo-cRED), which combines hierarchical cluster analysis with cryo-EM technique. The high-quality datasets possess not only up to 0.79-angstrom resolution but more than 90% completeness, leading to unambiguous solution and precise refinement with anisotropic temperature factors. With such a powerful method, the dynamic structures with flexible linkers, degree of interpenetration, position of functional groups, and arrangement of ordered guest molecules are successfully revealed with atomic precision in five 3D COFs, which are almost impossible to be obtained without atomic resolution structure solution. This study demonstrates a practicable strategy for determining the structures of polycrystalline COFs and other beam-sensitive materials and to help in the future discovery of novel materials on the other.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), an emerging class of organic crystalline polymers with highly oriented structures and permanent porosity, can adopt 2D or 3D architectures depending on the different topological diagrams of the monomers. Notably, 2D COFs have particularly gained much attention due to the extraordinary merits of their extended in-plane π-conjugation and topologically ordered columnar π-arrays. These properties together with high crystallinity, large surface area, and tunable porosity distinguish 2D COFs as an ideal candidate for the fabrication of functional materials. Herein, this review surveys the recent research advances in 2D COFs with special emphasis on the preparation of 2D COF powders, single crystals, and thin films, as well as their advanced optical, electrical, and magnetic functionalities. Some challenging issues and potential research outlook for 2D COFs are also provided for promoting their development in terms of structure, synthesis, and functionalities.

Strong and flaw-insensitive two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising polymeric crystalline nanomaterials with broad applications. However, the understanding of their mechanical properties and fracture mechanisms remains elusive. Here, we report a quantitative in situ tensile study of ultrathin COF TAPB-DHTA films. The fracture strength was measured to be 0.75 ± 0.34 GPa, and the tensile modulus was measured to be 10.38 ± 3.42 GPa, with a nominal density of 0.393 g/cc, thus having specific strength equivalent to Kevlar (2 GPa·cc/g), and specific modulus comparable with titanium alloys (23 GPa·cc/g). In addition, the fracture toughness was measured to be 0.55 ± 0.09 MPa√m, and it was found that the crack propagation could be insensitive to the pre-crack when the size of pre-crack is below a critical value, leading to intriguing flaw insensitivity in such ultrathin nanomaterials. This work provides in-depth insights into the fracture properties of 2D COF films and lays a foundation for their future applications.

Abstract:Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) are an interesting class of 2D materials since their reticular synthesis allows the tailored design of structures and functionalities. For many of their applications the mechanical stability and performance is an important aspect. Here, we use a computational approach involving a density-functional based tight-binding method to calculate the in-plane elastic properties of about 40 COFs with a honeycomb lattice. Based on those calculations, we develop two coarse-grained descriptions: one based on a spring network and the second using a network of elastic beams. The models allow us to connect the COF force constants to the molecular force constants of the linker molecules and thus enable an efficient description of elastic deformations. To illustrate this aspect, we calculate the deformation energy of different COFs containing the equivalent of a Stone-Wales defect and find very good agreement with the coarse-grained description.

Abstract:Metformin, an antihyperglycemic, is widely used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). A rare, but important complication associated with this drug is the development of lactic acidosis: Overall mortality of lactic acidosis is approximately 50%. Certain subsets of patients taking metformin are at greater risk of developing lactic acidosis. This report discusses the development of metformin-associated lactic acidosis in four older adults admitted to an institution during a 2-month period, treatments, and outcomes. We recommend an aggressive treatment strategy of hemodialysis followed by peritoneal dialysis, continuous bicarbonate infusion, and tight glucose control. We review the cautions and contraindications of metformin use for the treatment of type 2 DM and report an educational plan for residents and staff instituted to improve drug complication awareness and reduce mortality.

Abstract:Featuring the art of covalent chemistry on 2D and 3D with molecular precision, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted immense interests from inorganic, organic, polymer, materials and energy chemistry. However, due to the synthetic challenge of "crystallization problem", structural determination of COFs has been the bottle‐neck in speeding up their discovery and design, as well as building up their structure‐property relation. Electron diffraction tomography (EDT) have been developed to determine crystal structures of COFs with only sub‐micrometer sized single crystals, which enabled the ab initio determination of crystal structure, molecular connectivity, pore metrics, and host‐guest interaction at the atomic level. In this review, we summarized the recent developments of EDT for addressing challenges in structure determinations of such e‐beam sensitive, organic porous crystals, covering comprehensively automatic data collection, low dose, cryogenic protocols, structural solution method, powder X‐ray diffraction refinement, and high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) imaging techniques. We do believe the EDT will propel this field into the new era of COF chemistry with atomic precision, and we envision the wide application of artificial intelligence will promote the structural determination and particle analysis of COFs and related materials.This article is protected by copyright.
