Abstract:Pretense is a naturally occurring, apparently universal activity for typically developing children. Yet its function and effects remain unclear. One theorized possibility is that pretense activities, such as dramatic pretend play games, are a possible causal path to improve children's emotional development. Social and emotional skills, particularly emotional control, are critically important for social development, as well as academic performance and later life success. However, the study of such approaches has been criticized for potential bias and lack of rigor, precluding the ability to make strong causal claims. We conducted a randomized, component control (dismantling) trial of dramatic pretend play games with a low-SES group of 4-year-old children (N = 97) to test whether such practice yields generalized improvements in multiple social and emotional outcomes. We found specific effects of dramatic play games only on emotional self-control. Results suggest that dramatic pretend play games involving physicalizing emotional states and traits, pretending to be animals and human characters, and engaging in pretend scenarios in a small group may improve children's emotional control. These findings have implications for the function of pretense and design of interventions to improve emotional control in typical and atypical populations. Further, they provide support for the unique role of dramatic pretend play games for young children, particularly those from low-income backgrounds. Abstract:Activation of the serine/threonine kinase Akt, also called protein kinase B (PKB), was investigated in human neutrophils. Stimulation of the cells with the chemoattractant fMet-Leu-Phe or the chemokines IL-8 and GROα leads to the rapid and transient activation of PKB. Maximum PKB activation correlates with the well documented kinetics of respiratory burst and exocytosis. Wortmannin, a selective inhibitor of phosphoinositide 3-kinases (PI 3-kinases) in neutrophils, abrogates PKB activation. Similarly homo and heterotypic cross-linking of FcγIIA and FcγIIIB causes a transient activation of PKB that is sensitive to wortmannin treatment. Kinase activity measurements in immunoprecipitates from lysates of the myelocytic GM-1 cells or GM-1/CXCR1 cells, which are transfected with the IL-8 receptor 1, confirmed the transient activation of PKB observed in neutrophils. Stimulation of human monocytes with the CC chemokine RANTES (regulated on activation normal T cell expressed and secreted) also results in the activation of PKB. Preincubation of monocytes and neutrophils with Bordetella pertussis toxin inhibits fMet-Leu-Phe and RANTES-stimulated PKB activation, demonstrating that coupling of the receptors to heterotrimeric Gi-protein is required. The data show, that activation of PKB by Gi-protein-coupled receptors is mediated by PI 3-kinase and suggest that PKB is a constituent of neutrophil activating pathways.

Abstract:Tabletop roleplaying games are not new hobbies but have a distinct contemporary affiliation with pop culture. Many shows and podcasts feature popular TTRPG Dungeons and Dragons, among various additional games. These games have the powerful potential to examine identity, identity formation, and many personal issues through roleplaying potential. Collective storytelling and character development are cornerstones of this process. With this potential, it is important to realize the potential for negative experiences and tabletop spaces that could potentially cause more harm than good for players. This article examines the connections between TTRPGs and the intimacy process. Mainly exploring how intimacy tools such as the “button,” boundary practice, and consent-based world-building can significantly impact the game experience. As a result, I discuss how these processes additionally benefit the individual player. Ultimately, I argue that TTRPGs are strengthened through engagement with the intimacy process.
A plausible role of imagination in pretend play, counterfactual reasoning, and executive functions

Abstract:A notable observation is the similarities in the cognitive processes of pretend play (PP) and counterfactual reasoning (CFR) as both involve thinking about alternatives to reality. It is argued by Weisberg and Gopnik (Cogn. Sci., 37, 2013, 1368) that alternative thinking in PP and CFR is underpinned by an imaginary representational capacity but few studies have empirically investigated this link. We use a variable latent modelling approach to test a hypothetical model of the structural relationship of PP and CFR predicting that if PP and CFR are cognitively similar; they should have similar patterns of associations with Executive Functions (EFs). Data were collected on PP, CFR, EFs and Language from 189 children (M = 4.8 years, males = 101, females = 88). Confirmatory factor analyses showed that measures of PP and CFR loaded onto single latent constructs and were significantly correlated (r = .51, p = .001) with each other. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that EF accounted for unique significant variance in both PP (β = 21) and CFR (β = 22). The results of the structural equation modelling revealed that the data were a good fit for the hypothetical model. We discuss the plausible role of a general underlying imaginative representational capacity to explain similarities in the cognitive mechanisms of different states of alternative thinking like PP and CFR.

This paper, based on scaffolding learning theory, puts forward the learning principle of constructive play suitable for learning in play school, suitable for cognitive behaviors of children aged 5 to 8 years old, and aims to encourage children to think creatively in the course of play, rather than learning knowledge and solve problems. We redesign the images, most commonly used by children RPG storytelling, and embed interactive intelligence, to better help children play games, stimulate their imagination and creativity in storytelling, and encourage them share with their companions and parents.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION Pretending elements are ‘as-if’ elements. Pretending, in that it represents reality in ‘as if’ terms. Pretending elements demand symbolic transformation that is, pretending a role, pretending with an object, and pretending a situation. The term ‘pretend play’ is named as a symbolic play, imaginative play, make-believe play, fantasy play, and dramatic play. Pretend play allows children to explore their fears in a safe setting. A child can begin to overcome his or her fear of doctors by donning a lab coat and stethoscope and becoming the person who scares him or her. He or she replaces his or her fear with a sense of control (Colker, 2015). Through their pretend play, children create new pretend situations. These can contain within them a wide range of seemingly unconnected elements all drawn from the child’s previous experiences. Pretend acts as a way of unifying experiences, knowledge, and understanding, helping the child to discover the links between the individual components. As children control the pretend play, they are also able to control its components. Children bring to the pretend to play existing knowledge, skills, and the understanding of the world, which they then assimilate within an existing scheme or create new and novel interconnections (Kitson, 2015; Wood, 2004).

Abstract:Sobel and Lillard (2001) demonstrated that 4-year-olds' understanding of the role that the mind plays in pretending improved when children were asked questions in a fantasy context. The present study investigated whether this fantasy effect was motivated by children recognizing that fantasy contains violations of real-world causal structure. In Experiment 1, 4-year-olds were shown a fantasy character engaged in ordinary actions or actions that violated causal knowledge. Children were more likely to say that a troll doll who was acting like but ignorant of the character was not pretending to be that character when read the violation story. Experiment 2 suggested that this difference was not caused by a greater interest in the violation story. Experiment 3 demonstrated a similar difference for characters engaged in social and functional violations that were possible in the real world. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that preschoolers use actions and appearance more than mental states to make judgments about pretense, but that those judgments can be influenced by the context in which the questions are presented.

Abstract:Background. Several authors from different fields have already mentioned the educational potential of role-playing games (RPG). As tabletop role-playing games (TRPG) present some similarities with small adult groups in learning and personal development situations, what about their transformative potential? Aim. The purpose of this article is to describe the tabletop role-playing game’s emerging context, a few of its specificities and functions, to show links with several education, play and game, and personal development theories, and to raise awareness about its transformative potential. Methods. Three complementary approaches were used: a literature review (academics and role-players), action-researches through a transformative role-playing game (“TF-RPG” – a TRPG plus a debriefing), and data cross-analysis. Results. Participants are involved in the TF-RPG through four levels of reality, namely the character, player, person, and human being, which can be associated with four dimensions of learning: knowing, doing, being, and relating. The unveiling of links between the TF-RPG experience and their personal journey offers the participants various ways of learning and paths towards personal development. Conclusion. TRPGs are particularly effective to foster knowledge acquisition, develop role-play skills, strengthen team building, encourage collaborative creativity, and explore one’s personal development.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This research seeks to understand developmental processes of cognition, especially as these processes become observable in children’s role-play. In seeking to understand cognitive development in young children, we focus on how children incorporate pretend ‘technologies’ in role-play, such as non-operational cell phones, through pretend conversations and actions in the play episode. In observations with two preschool classes of four-year-old children, role-play that involved pretend ‘technologies’ was analyzed as to its effect on children’s ability to think abstractly and to form mental representations. This qualitative study collected observations and documentation of children’s actions and words as they played, coded and analyzed through constant comparison. Two findings were identified indicating that role-play using pretend ‘technologies’ promotes expansion of children’s abstract thought; and role-play with pretend ‘technologies’ enhances children’s perceptions and enactments of dual representation. With further examination, we distilled three ways that abstract thought and dual representation occurred during role-play with pretend ‘technologies’: through children’s symbolic understanding and actions, higher mental functions when interacting with pretend ‘technologies’, and children’s on-and-off line cognitive functions when operating pretend ‘technologies’. This study suggests that there are many benefits of children engaging in pretend play and that incorporating technology in the play scenario amplifies cognitive benefits.

Abstract:This paper will explore one aspect of the relationship between pretence and narratives. I look at proposals about how scripts play guiding roles in our pretend play practices. I then examine the views that mental representations are needed to guide pretend play, reviewing two importantly different pictures of mental guiders: the Propositional Account and the Model Account. Both accounts are individualistic and internalistic; the former makes use of language-like representations, the latter makes use of models, maps and images. The paper will discuss some worries with the notion of mental guiders, and offer some positive suggestions about what else might be playing the guiding role in pretence. I propose that environmental affordances and socially scaffolded engagements provide the basis of pretence guiders (the Interactive Account), and suggest that engagement in narrative practices further frames and allows elaborations of acts of pretend play (the Narrative Account). I take first steps in developing a new embodied, enactive and intersubjective understanding of pretence, showing why it is a viable alternative to the mental representational accounts of pretence.

Abstract:Analysis of psychological literature suggests that among modern children, role-playing games are undergoing major changes in the temporal and spatial dimensions, yet remain relevant for their development, including socialization. The study aims to examine the characteristics of role-playing games as a factor in the socialization of modern preschool children in the cultural space of a provincial city. The utilized empirical methods include a verbal survey of the teachers of senior and preparatory kindergarten groups and observation of children in play activities. Analysis of the study results shows that: 1) many modern parents consider early, accelerated learning of children to be a much more important childhood activity than play without taking seriously the consequences of such underplaying, such as the difficulties in socialization; 2) children often do not want to organize role-playing games themselves, giving their preference to gadget-based recreational activities, which often satisfies adults who get extra free time for their urgent matters; 3) the themes and plots of games predominantly reflect the everyday and virtual (the content of television shows and computer games) sides of life while professional and social scenarios are less represented; 4) kindergartens predominantly have fixed play corners “for boys” and “for girls” and offer closed realistic toys with a fixed mode of action, which encourage children to stereotypical and monotonous actions; 5) substitute items, which develop imagination, fantasy, and creative thinking, are typically not used by modern preschool children in play; 6) there are pronounced gender differences in children’s play interests, which are most striking in rural areas, in small provincial towns; 7) teachers may project their perception of the game onto its plot, thus suppressing some independence of children.

Abstract:Children's role playing, whether personifying toys or imagining invisible friends, involves imagining others' minds and internal states. Similarly, anthropomorphism - the attribution of internal states to non-human others (e.g., animals, inanimate nature, or technologies) - also involves imagining others' minds and internal states. We propose that the imaginative process of simulating and projecting internal states is common to both role play and anthropomorphism. The current study investigated the relation between children's role play and anthropomorphism. Ninety children (5, 7, and 9 years) were administered Individual Differences in Anthropomorphism Questionnaire - Child Form (IDAQ-CF), comprised of the technology-inanimate nature and animal subscales, and the Role Play Scale, which assessed (a) impersonation of animals, people, and/or machines and (b) imaginary companions (ICs), including invisible friends and personified toys. Results indicated that the imaginative act of impersonating an animal, person, and/or machine was positively related to anthropomorphism, and specifically anthropomorphism of inanimate nature and technology. Second, anthropomorphism of animals was highest amongst children with invisible ICs, followed by those with toy ICs and those who impersonated. Finally, children who frequently engaged with an invisible ICs more readily anthropomorphized in general and technology and inanimate nature in particular relative to all other children. Results are discussed in terms of the differing degrees of imagination involved in anthropomorphism of animals versus technology and inanimate nature.

Abstract:In this paper, we draw upon three observation data to explore the concept of pretend play and peer cultures among kindergarten children situated in a childcare center of the Midwestern area of the U.S. Framed in this study, Paley’s (1992) notion of dynamic play that exists within children that children behavior is changing over time and across ages. Pretend-play and peer culture are worth investigating to better understand children’s social development that might have implication for their success in education. Two observation data were obtained from a university-based Child Care Center, and one from an Indonesian family who have lived in the U.S. for three years. 12 children aged three to four years old and two kindergarten teachers were involved during the observation. The observations lasted for about 40 minutes. The findings suggest that the children were involved in different kinds of play: (1) spontaneous fantasy, and (2) socio-dramatic play. Spontaneous fantasy is when children are involved in a less structured play or no strict rule that governs the activity. Socio-dramatic play is kinds of play when children take agency that exist in the society, such as mothers, fathers, workers, and other adulthood. Both types of pretend play embodied shared knowledge about how to play appropriately based on the theme and plot emerged.

Abstract:The new paradigm of early childhood allows for the construction of the child as active agents able to comment on their own lives. Historically children have been constructed using divergent discourses as either beings or becomings. More recently they have been seen as complementary and a further temporal state of having been allows for a richer description of the child. In play and role-play, the three temporal states can be observed and appear to inform the children’s understanding of complex world structures. This paper reports the research that was conducted in two Early Childhood Education and Care settings in England. The research was concerned with young children’s experiences of play and role-play in their early childhood setting. Observations and conferences demonstrate the ways in which the temporal states are established in their play.

Abstract:This paper presents an overview of the conceptual, developmental and functional aspects of metacommunication in preschool children's social pretend play. While the relationship between the representational aspects of social pretend play and positive developmental outcomes is well researched, metacommunicaton in social pretend play remains a largely under-researched phenomenon. A definition of social pretend play is proposed leading to propositions as to its specific functions for young children's learning and development. In particular, it is hypothesised that the development of metacommunication during social pretend play may make an important contribution to the early development of metacognition and self-regulation. Having proposed these specific functions for metacommunication, the implications of this for adult involvement in naturally occurring social pretend play are discussed. Identifying more specifically the components of social pretend play which support specific aspects of learning can inform pedagogical innovations, and the realisation of the full educational potential of social pretend play. While this review highlights some important conceptual, developmental and pedagogical issues in relation to metacommunicaton in social pretend play, these aspects clearly require elaboration. Suggestions are made for further research on metacommunciation development, and the conditions which support its emergence and development.

Do embodiment and fictionality affect young children's learning?

Abstract:Preschool-aged children can learn from fictional, pretend, and imaginative activities. However, many studies showing this learning involve children as physically passive while consuming fictional narratives rather than as actively, physically engaged. Physical engagement may add to cognitive processes already at play when watching narratives, making children more likely to retain or understand information. Children's natural pretend involves physical movement, role play, and embodiment. To test learning from embodied pretense, we conducted two studies in which we experimentally manipulated whether children were physically passive while consuming narratives or physically actively engaged with them through embodied pretend play using puppets or costumes. In Study 1, children were shown/engaged in television-based narratives, all of which contained fantastical content. In Study 2, children were shown/engaged in lab-created stories, some of which contained fantastical elements. We measured children's learning and perceptions of realism. In Study 1, neither perception of fictionality nor embodiment immediately affected learning, although older preschoolers learned more than younger preschoolers. In Study 2, neither perception nor presence of fantastical content affected learning, but embodiment did. Children learned more from both embodied conditions compared with the physically passive condition. We also included 2-week follow-up tests of recall and found that although children retained very little, embodiment still affected retention in both studies. Overall, children did not use realism judgments to differentiate learning. These findings show the complexity of different elements involved in children's learning from pretense and the need to understand what elements affect learning from fantastical and embodied pretend play and stories.

Abstract:When young children observe pretend-play, do they interpret it simply as a type of behavior, or do they infer the underlying mental state that gives the behavior meaning? This is a long-standing question with deep implications for how "theory on mind" develops. The two leading accounts of shared pretense give opposing answers. The behavioral theory proposes that children represent pretense as a form of behavior (behaving in a way that would be appropriate if P); the metarepresentational theory argues that children instead represent pretense via the early concept PRETEND. A test between these accounts is provided by children's understanding of pretend sounds and speech. We report the first experiments directly investigating this understanding. In three experiments, 2- and 3-year-olds' listened to requests that were either spoken normally, or with the pretense that a teddy bear was uttering them. To correctly fulfill the requests, children had to represent the normal utterance as the experimenter's, and the pretend utterances as the bear's. Children succeeded at both ages, suggesting that they can represent pretend speech (the requests) as coming from counterfactual sources (the bear rather than the experimenter). We argue that this is readily explained by the metarepresentational theory, but harder to explain if children are behaviorists about pretense.
Using group role-playing games with gifted children and adolescents: A psychosocial intervention model.

Abstract:Gifted children develop asynchronously, are often advanced for their age cognitively but at or between their chronological and mental ages socially and emotionally (Robinson, 2008). In order to help gifted children and adolescents develop and practice social and emotional self-regulation skills, we investigated the use of an Adlerian play therapy approach during pen-and-paper role-playing games. Additionally, we used Goffman’s (1961, 1974) social role identification and distance to encourage participants to experiment with new identities. Herein, we propose a psychosocial model of interactions during role-playing games based on Goffman’s theory and Adlerian play therapy techniques, and suggest that role-playing games are an effective way of intervening with gifted children and adolescents to improve their intra- and interpersonal skills. We specifically targeted intrapersonal skills of exercising creativity, becoming self-aware, and setting individual goals by raising participants’ awareness of their privately logical reasons for making decisions and their levels of social interest. We also targeted their needs and means of seeking significance in the group to promote collaboration and interaction skills with other gifted peers through role analysis, embracement, and distancing. We report results from a case study and conclude that role-playing games deserve more attention, both from researchers and clinical practitioners, because they encourage change while improving young clients’ social and emotional development.

Abstract:The current study aims to observe whether individuals who engaged in table-top role playing game (TRPG) were more creative. Participants total 170 (52 TRPG players, 54 electronic role playing game (ERPG) players and 64 Non-players) aged from 19 to 63. In the current study, an online questionnaire is used, adopting the verbal subtests of Wallach–Kogan Creativity Tests and the McCrae and Costa Big Five Personality Inventory. It is found that TRPG players score higher in divergent thinking tests. Priming and instruction giving methods lower the performance of all participants, in particular, when the instruction is memory provoking. ERPG players score lowest among the three groups. TRPG could be regarded as a form of improvisation. It could also be a preferable activity for the promotion of creativity. It is low cost and no formal setting is required to play. Many ERPGs are originated from TRPGs, therefore, with the popularity of ERPG, there should be advantages in promoting TRPG.
