Abstract:This study examined whether there are neural markers of individual differences in working memory (WM) capacity and whether these differences are only manifest when performing a demanding WM task or at all levels of difficulty. Each subject's WM capacity was estimated using a modified digit span task prior to participation in an N-back task that varied difficulty from 1- to 4-back. While performing the N-back task, subjects wore scalp electrodes that allowed measurement of both event-related potentials (ERP) and event-related synchronization and desynchronization (ERS/ERD). Those subjects classified as low WM were more affected by the higher cognitive demands (many more errors in the 4-back task and generally slower responses) than those classified as high WM. These behavioral differences between the two groups were also apparent in the neural markers. Specifically, low WM subjects, when compared with high WM subjects, produced smaller P300 amplitudes and theta ERS, as well as greater alpha ER]) at the most difficult level. Importantly, the observed differences in electrophysiological responses between the two groups were also observed at the lowest difficulty level, not just when the task challenged WM capacity. In addition, P300 amplitudes and alpha ERD responses were found to correlate with individual WM capacities independent of the task difficulty. These results suggest that there are qualitative neural differences among individuals with different WM capacities when approaching cognitive operations. Individuals with high WM capacities may make more efficient use of neural resources to keep their attention focused on the task-relevant information when performing cognitive tasks. Abstract:Mounting evidence suggests that multiple mechanisms underlie working memory capacity. Using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), the current study aimed to provide causal evidence for the neural dissociation of two mechanisms underlying visual working memory (WM) capacity, namely, the scope and control of attention. A change detection task with distractors was used, where a number of colored bars (i.e., two red bars, four red bars, or two red plus two blue bars) were presented on both sides (Experiment 1) or the center (Experiment 2) of the screen for 100ms, and participants were instructed to remember the red bars and to ignore the blue bars (in both Experiments), as well as to ignore the stimuli on the un-cued side (Experiment 1 only). In both experiments, participants finished three sessions of the task after 15min of 1.5mA anodal tDCS administered on the right prefrontal cortex (PFC), the right posterior parietal cortex (PPC), and the primary visual cortex (VC), respectively. The VC stimulation served as an active control condition. We found that compared to stimulation on the VC, stimulation on the right PPC specifically increased the visual WM capacity under the no-distractor condition (i.e., 4 red bars), whereas stimulation on the right PFC specifically increased the visual WM capacity under the distractor condition (i.e., 2 red bars plus 2 blue bars). These results suggest that the PPC and PFC are involved in the scope and control of attention, respectively. We further showed that compared to central presentation of the stimuli (Experiment 2), bilateral presentation of the stimuli (on both sides of the fixation in Experiment 1) led to an additional demand for attention control. Our results emphasize the dissociated roles of the frontal and parietal lobes in visual WM capacity, and provide a deeper understanding of the neural mechanisms of WM.
Asymmetric Interaction Effects of Information with Varying Priorities in Visual Working Memory

Abstract:Visual working memory (VWM) is the ability to temporarily maintain and manipulate visual information, with individuals adjusting the priority of information processing based on task demands. However, the nature of the interactions between information of varying priorities in VWM remains debated, which is the focus of the current study. In Experiment 1, participants performed a delayed recall task for colors under different loads of prioritized memory items (PMIs) and unprioritized memory items (UMIs). The results indicated that the recall for PMIs deteriorated as the load of UMIs increased, and vice versa. More importantly, recall for UMIs was more significantly affected by the load of PMIs, indicating an asymmetric interaction pattern between PMIs and UMIs. Experiments 2 and 3 examined whether such an interaction pattern was influenced by the presentation order of PMIs and UMIs. We reversed and randomized the presentation sequence and replicated the findings from Experiment 1. Experiments 4 and 5 further validated these findings in delayed recall tasks for orientations and locations, confirming that the asymmetric interaction effects were consistent across different stimulus types. Moreover, Experiments 6 and 7 tested the cognitive mechanism underlying this pattern. We introduced an interference task during the delay phase and a test condition without recall of PMIs, revealing that the sustained attention to PMIs and the prioritized retrieval of PMIs were responsible for the observed asymmetry interaction pattern. Overall, this study enhances our understanding of how information with different priorities interacts during VWM and offers valuable insights for future studies.
Understanding the PD and the N2pc: Modeling the Neural Mechanisms Underlying Spatial Attention Shifts

Abstract:When spatial attention is directed by a target towards one side of the visual field, electrodes on the scalp record an asymmetrical electrophysiological potential over parietal cortex called the N2pc. This EEG component has recently been shown to reflect the engagement of attention at a location, but not sustained attentional deployment (Tan & Wyble, In Press). A computational model has interpreted this component as the attentional system “locking-on” to the location of a target (Tan & Wyble, In Press). The Pd is another lateralized component, thought to reflect suppression of distracting information. In contrast to this interpretation, we have run an EEG experiment using four RSVP streams which reveals a Pd elicited by two simultaneously presented targets, when the targets are separated by one degree of visual angle, but not when separated by four degrees. To provide a neural intuition for the mechanisms underlying the Pd component, we have revised our previous neurocomputational model of attentional dynamics so that it simulates both the N2pc and the Pd as suggested by a variety of experimental findings. The new model simulates the Pd as a laterally asymmetric imbalance in the inhibition of attentional control neurons in posterior parietal cortex. This imbalance can have multiple causes, which explains how the Pd is elicited both with and without distractors. Critical to this account is strategic regulation of the attentional focus, such that it is tighter when stimuli are spatially proximal, whether they are targets or distractors. Furthermore, since the Pd can be elicited by distractors without a leading N2pc, the model includes a reactive form of inhibition that can, in some cases, suppress distracting information before it can elicit an attentional response. Abstract:Abstract A growing body of research suggests that the predictive power of working memory (WM) capacity for measures of intellectual aptitude is due to the ability to control attention and select relevant information. Crucially, attentional mechanisms implicated in controlling access to WM are assumed to be domain-general, yet reports of enhanced attentional abilities in individuals with larger WM capacities are primarily within the visual domain. Here, we directly test the link between WM capacity and early attentional gating across sensory domains, hypothesizing that measures of visual WM capacity should predict an individual's capacity to allocate auditory selective attention. To address this question, auditory ERPs were recorded in a linguistic dichotic listening task, and individual differences in ERP modulations by attention were correlated with estimates of WM capacity obtained in a separate visual change detection task. Auditory selective attention enhanced ERP amplitudes at an early latency (ca. 70–90 msec), with larger P1 components elicited by linguistic probes embedded in an attended narrative. Moreover, this effect was associated with greater individual estimates of visual WM capacity. These findings support the view that domain-general attentional control mechanisms underlie the wide variation of WM capacity across individuals.

Overlapping neural representations for selection in attention and working memory

Abstract:Although many studies point to qualitative similarities between working memory (WM) and attention, the degree to which these two constructs rely on common neural substrates remains unclear. In this study, we used fMRI to compare the patterns of neural activity evoked during attentional selection and selection within WM. Eleven participants selected one of three visual objects either while that information was present on the screen (i.e., attentional selection) or after it disappeared (i.e., WM selection ). Our measure of selection was how well classifiers trained on the pattern of BOLD activation could decode the location of the selected object. Critically, the classifiers were trained and tested either in the same condition (e.g., trained and tested on attentional selection; within-condition decoding) or different conditions (e.g., trained on attentional selection and tested on WM selection; across-condition decoding). Comparing the within- and across- condition performance provides quantitative evidence for the amount of overlap in neural substrates between the selection process in WM and attention. We observed significantly above-chance decoding performance both within- and across-conditions in visual cortex and intraparietal sulcus. The time-series of decoding performance within- and across-conditions was consistent with the time-course of the selection process, confirming the classifiers decoded the selection process itself. Importantly, the above-chance within- and across- condition performance was largely comparable in these areas—the ratio of across-condition to within-condition performance is larger than 0.91. These results point to a strikingly high overlap in the neural representations between attentional and WM selection.

Abstract:Visual selective attention can be achieved into bottom-up and top-down attention. Different selective attention tasks involve different attention control ways. The pop-out task requires more bottom-up attention, whereas the search task involves more top-down attention. P300, which is the positive potential generated by the brain in the latency of 300 ~ 600 ms after stimulus, reflects the processing of attention. There is no consensus on the P300 source. The aim of present study is to study the source of P300 elicited by different visual selective attention. We collected thirteen participants' P300 elicited by pop-out and search tasks with event-related potentials (ERP). We collected twenty-six participants' activation brain regions in pop-out and search tasks with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). And we analyzed the sources of P300 using the ERP and fMRI integration with high temporal resolution and high spatial resolution. ERP results indicated that the pop-out task induced larger P300 than the search task. P300 induced by the two tasks distributed at frontal and parietal lobes, with P300 induced by the pop-out task mainly at the parietal lobe and that induced by the search task mainly at the frontal lobe. Further ERP and fMRI integration analysis showed that neural difference sources of P300 were the right precentral gyrus, left superior frontal gyrus (medial orbital), left middle temporal gyrus, left rolandic operculum, right postcentral gyrus, and left angular gyrus. Our study suggests that the frontal and parietal lobes contribute to the P300 component of visual selective attention.

Early Top-Down Control of Internal Selection Induced by Retrospective Cues in Visual Working Memory: Advantage of Peripheral over Central Cues.

Abstract:Attention can be deployed among external sensory stimuli or internal working memory (WM) representations, and recent primate studies have revealed that these external and internal selections share a common neural basis in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). However, it remains to be elucidated how PFC implements these selections, especially in humans. The present study aimed to further investigate whether PFC responded differentially to the peripheral and central retrospective cues (retro-cues) that induced attention selection among WM representations. To achieve this, we combined magnetoencephalography (MEG, Experiment 1) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS, Experiment 2) with an orientation-recall paradigm. Experiment 1 found that a peripheral retro-cue with 100% reliability had a greater benefit on WM performance than a central retro-cue, while this advantage of peripheral over central cues vanished when the cue reliability dropped to 50% (non-informative). MEG source analysis indicated that the 100% peripheral retro-cue elicited earlier (-125 ms) PFC responses than the central retro-cue (-275 ms). Meanwhile, Granger causality analysis showed that PFC had earlier (0-200 ms) top-down signals projecting to the superior parietal lobule (SPL) and the lateral occipital cortex (LOC) after the onset of peripheral retro-cues, while these top-down signals appeared later (300-500 ms) after the onset of central retro-cues. Importantly, PFC activity within this period of 300-500 ms correlated with the peripheral advantage in behavior. Moreover, Experiment 2 applied TMS at different time points to test the causal influence of brain activity on behavior and found that stimulating PFC at 100 ms abolished the behavioral benefit of the peripheral retro-cue, as well as its advantage over the central retro-cue. Taken together, our results suggested that the advantage of peripheral over central retro-cues in the mnemonic domain is realized through faster topdown control from PFC, which challenged traditional opinions that the top-down control of attention on WM required at least 300 ms to appear. The present study highlighted that in addition to the causal role of PFC in attention selection of WM representations, timing was critical as well and faster was better.

Abstract:Variation in working-memory capacity (WMC) predicts individual differences in only some attention-control capabilities. Whereas higher WMC subjects outperform lower WMC subjects in tasks requiring the restraint of prepotent but inappropriate responses, and the constraint of attentional focus to target stimuli against distractors, they do not differ in prototypical visual-search tasks, even those that yield steep search slopes and engender top-down control. The present three experiments tested whether WMC, as measured by complex memory span tasks, would predict search latencies when the 1–8 target locations to be searched appeared alone, versus appearing among distractor locations to be ignored, with the latter requiring selective attentional focus. Subjects viewed target-location cues and then fixated on those locations over either long (1,500–1,550 ms) or short (300 ms) delays. Higher WMC subjects identified targets faster than did lower WMC subjects only in the presence of distractors and only over long fixation delays. WMC thus appears to affect subjects’ ability to maintain a constrained attentional focus over time.

Abstract:Cognitive control warrants efficient task performance in dynamic and changing environments through adjustments in executive attention, stimulus and response selection. The well-known P300 component of the human event-related potential (ERP) has long been proposed to index "context-updating"-critical for cognitive control-in simple target detection tasks. However, task switching ERP studies have revealed both target P3 (300-350 ms) and later sustained P3-like potentials (400-1,200 ms) to first targets ensuing transition cues, although it remains unclear whether these target P3-like potentials also reflect context updating operations. To address this question, we applied novel single-trial EEG analyses-residue iteration decomposition (RIDE)-in order to disentangle target P3 sub-components in a sample of 22 young adults while they either repeated or switched (updated) task rules. The rationale was to revise the context updating hypothesis of P300 elicitation in the light of new evidence suggesting that "the context" consists of not only the sensory units of stimulation, but also associated motor units, and intermediate low- and high-order sensorimotor units, all of which may need to be dynamically updated on a trial by trial basis. The results showed functionally distinct target P3-like potentials in stimulus-locked, response-locked, and intermediate RIDE component clusters overlying parietal and frontal regions, implying multiple functionally distinct, though temporarily overlapping context updating operations. These findings support a reformulated version of the context updating hypothesis, and reveal a rich family of distinct target P3-like sub-components during the reactive control of target detection in task-switching, plausibly indexing the complex and dynamic workings of frontoparietal cortical networks subserving cognitive control.

The Contribution of Bilateral Working Memory and Parietal Activation in Audiovisual Voluntary Spatial and Temporal Attention

Abstract:Visual cue in the top-down attention mechanism was investigated that it could effectively improve the target cognition reaction quality. Recent brain studies showed that the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC) played an important role to keep the task-relevant information and task rule during tasks. In this study, we focused on the neural network of attention and the function of rDLPFC, whether it modulates the attention during visual and auditory divided spatial and temporal attention. We used a top-down attention paradigm in which a visual cue directs the attention of participants to both visual and auditory target stimulus in a spatial (attention was directed to unilateral target distinctly) in VAS (visual auditory spatial) task and a temporal (attention was directed to a time point alternatively although humans are difficult to pay attention to a time point clearly) in VAT (visual auditory temporal) attention task. A non-informative cue task was also carried out in VAN (visual auditory neutral) task in order to observe the activation of working memory. Behavioral data showed no significant difference between VAS, VAT and VAN by twos. The parietal and frontal cortices were activated in both the VAS and VAT attention tasks. Furthermore, in the VAS and VAT attention task, it used a bilateral frontal-parietal network to modulate the cognition of visual and auditory target. But in the VAT attention task, right parietal cortex was not activated as well as the VAS task. The activation of DLPFC shows stronger in the spatial attention task than the temporal task, and in a non-informative cue task, the activation of DLPFC is the lowest in the three tasks.
Susceptibility to Attentional Capture by Target-Matching Distractors Predicts High Visual Working Memory Capacity

Abstract:Psychological Science, Ahead of Print. Recent event-related potential (ERP) studies showed that individuals with low visual working memory (VWM) capacity are more susceptible to salience-driven attentional capture than high-capacity individuals are, with the latter being able to proactively suppress salient but irrelevant distractors. However, it remains unclear whether and how contingent attentional capture by distractors that possess a task-relevant (target) feature is related to VWM capacity. Here, we adopted a central focused-attention task that contained peripheral target-matching distractors to investigate this issue (N = 51 adults). Surprisingly, we revealed that target-matching distractors elicited both a larger N2-posterior-contralateral (N2pc) and a larger post-N2pc distractor positivity (PD) component in high-capacity individuals than in low-capacity ones, meaning that high-capacity individuals are less able to ignore such distractors initially, though they could call on a stronger reactive suppression mechanism afterward. These findings illustrate that high-capacity individuals are more (rather than less or equally) susceptible to contingent attention capture compared with low-capacity ones.

Executive control processes of working memory predict attentional blink magnitude over and above storage capacity

Abstract:When two masked, to-be-attended targets are presented within approximately half a second of each other, performance on the second target (T2) suffers, relative to when the targets are presented further apart in time or when the first target (T1) can be ignored. This phenomenon is known as the attentional blink (AB). Colzato et al. (Psychon Bull Rev 14:1051–1057, 2007) used an individual differences approach to examine whether individual AB magnitude was predicted by individual differences in working memory (WM), using the operation span paradigm (OSPAN). They found that OSPAN score was inversely related to AB magnitude even when a fluid intelligence measure (Raven’s SPM) was partialled out. However, it is not clear from this study whether it was the executive control aspect of working memory, the capacity aspect of short-term memory, (or both), that related to AB magnitude. In the present study we used a variety of WM measures that required varying degrees of executive control. OSPAN was negatively related to AB magnitude with Raven’s SPM, reading comprehension, reading rate, and digit forward and backward partialled out. Backward and forward digit span did not predict AB magnitude. These results support the conclusion that a “working” executive component of WM predicts temporal limitations of selective attention beyond static STM capacity and general cognitive ability.

Attention to Detail: Why Considering Task Demands Is Essential for Single-Trial Analysis of BOLD Correlates of the Visual P1 and N1

Abstract:Abstract Single-trial fluctuations in the EEG signal have been shown to temporally correlate with the fMRI BOLD response and are valuable for modeling trial-to-trial fluctuations in responses. The P1 and N1 components of the visual ERP are sensitive to different attentional modulations, suggesting that different aspects of stimulus processing can be modeled with these ERP parameters. As such, different patterns of BOLD covariation for P1 and N1 informed regressors would be expected; however, current findings are equivocal. We investigate the effects of variations in attention on P1 and N1 informed BOLD activation in a visual oddball task. Simultaneous EEG-fMRI data were recorded from 13 healthy participants during three conditions of a visual oddball task: Passive, Count, and Respond. We show that the P1 and N1 components of the visual ERP can be used in the integration-by-prediction method of EEG-fMRI data integration to highlight brain regions related to target detection and response production. Our data suggest that the P1 component of the ERP reflects changes in sensory encoding of stimulus features and is more informative for the Passive and Count conditions. The N1, on the other hand, was more informative for the Respond condition, suggesting that it can be used to model the processing of stimulus, meaning specifically discriminating one type of stimulus from another, and processes involved in integrating sensory information with response selection. Our results show that an understanding of the underlying electrophysiology is necessary for a thorough interpretation of EEG-informed fMRI analysis.

Ocular working memory signals are flexible to behavioral priority and subjective imagery strength

Abstract:The pupillary light response was long considered a brainstem reflex, outside of cognitive influence. However, newer findings indicate pupil dilation (and eye movements) can reflect content in working memory (WM). These findings may reshape understanding of ocular and WM mechanisms, but it is unclear whether the signals are artifactual or functional to WM. Here, we ask whether peripheral and oculomotor WM signals are sensitive to the task-relevance or 'attentional state' of memoranda. During eye-tracking, human participants saw both dark and bright WM stimuli, then were retroactively cued to the most likely to be tested item. Critically, we manipulated the attentional priority among items by varying the cue reliability across blocks. We confirmed previous findings that remembering darker items is associated with larger pupils, and that gaze is biased toward cued item locations. Moreover, we discovered that pupil and eye movement responses were influenced differently by WM item relevance. Feature-specific pupillary effects emerged only for highly prioritized WM items but were eliminated when cues were less reliable, and pupil effects also increased with self-reported visual imagery strength. Conversely, gaze position veered toward the cued item location, regardless of cue reliability. However, biased microsaccades occurred at a higher frequency when cues were reliable, though only during a limited post-cue time window. Therefore, peripheral sensorimotor processing is sensitive to the task-relevance or functional state of internal WM content, but pupillary and eye movement WM signals show distinct profiles. These results highlight potential roles for early visual processing in maintaining multiple WM content dimensions.

Abstract:Attention-control processes transfer relevant information to visual working memory (WM) and prevent irrelevant information from consuming WM resources. Although event-related potentials (ERPs) have revealed attention-control processes associated with enhancement of relevant stimuli (targets) and suppression of irrelevant stimuli (distractors), only the suppressive processes have been found to predict WM capacity. We hypothesised a link between target-enhancement processes and WM capacity would be revealed in a task that requires more control than the conventional visual search paradigms used to study target selection. Here, participants searched for a pop-out target on Go trials and withheld responses on an equal number of randomly intermixed No-Go trials, depending on the colour of the stimulus array. Magnitudes of ERP indices associated with target enhancement (the singleton detection positivity (SDP) and N2pc) were positively correlated with individual differences in WM capacity. These relationships vanished when participants searched for the pop-out target on every trial, regardless of stimulus-array colour. Inhibitory processes associated with suppressing distractors (P D ) and withholding responses (no-go P3) on No-Go trials did not predict WM capacity. These findings indicate that target-enhancement mechanisms control access to WM in search tasks that require dynamic control and disconfirm the view that the gateway to WM is entirely inhibitory by nature.

Abstract:<p>Selective attention can facilitate performance by filtering irrelevant information and temporary maintaining limited information to accomplish the current task. However, the neural substrate how attentional selection can be guided by visual working memory (vWM) is not clear. Here, we recorded electrophysiological signals during vWM retention and investigated the relationship between objects held in memorial templates and the subsequent attentional selection during visual search. We observed that sustained posterior contralateral delay activity (CDA) was present and scaled with lateral vWM loads during the whole period of vWM retention, but that it was absent when objects were bilaterally held in vWM. Surprisingly, a strikingly similar pattern emerged for modulations in the averaged posterior alpha (8–12 Hz) power during the late period but not during the early period of retention. More importantly, it was the alpha modulation, but not the CDA, that strongly predicted the subsequent biomarker of attentional selection (the memorial template-induced N2pc) during visual search We further observed the N2pc amplitudes decreased with increasing memory loads and predicted the same gradation of the final behavioral accuracy in visual search. All these results suggested that the subsequent memorial template-induced N2pc is response to the level of top–down attentional guiding effect caused by vWM. Our results provide neurophysiological evidence that keeping multiple templates in working memory simultaneously weakens the guiding effect to the following attentional selection.</p>

Abstract:Selective attention and working memory capacity (WMC) are related constructs, but debate about the manner in which they are related remains active. One elegant explanation of variance in WMC is that the efficiency of filtering irrelevant information is the crucial determining factor, rather than differences in capacity per se. We examined this hypothesis by relating WMC (as measured by complex span tasks) to accuracy and eye movements during visual change detection tasks with different degrees of attentional filtering and allocation requirements. Our results did not indicate strong filtering differences between high- and low-WMC groups, and where differences were observed, they were counter to those predicted by the strongest attentional filtering hypothesis. Bayes factors indicated evidence favoring positive or null relationships between WMC and correct responses to unemphasized information, as well as between WMC and the time spent looking at unemphasized information. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that individual differences in storage capacity, not only filtering efficiency, underlie individual differences in working memory.

Abstract:Journal of Attention Disorders, Ahead of Print. Objective:To investigate the neural mechanisms underlying working memory (WM) deficits in children with ADHD.Method:WM was compared between thirty-four children with ADHD and thirty-four matched controls using neuropsychological tests, spatial and verbal versions of modified delayed matching-to-sample (DMTS) tasks, and the event-related potential technique.Results:Children with ADHD demonstrated poor behavioral performance, delayed P3 latencies in high-load spatial modified DMTS tasks during encoding, and delayed P2 and N2 latencies during retrieval in spatial modified DMTS tasks. In high-load verbal modified DMTS tasks during encoding, they showed a smaller P3 amplitude.Discussion:Pronounced deficits in the central executive system in children with ADHD were exhibited by neuropsychological tests and the modified DMTS task. Children with ADHD exhibited a slowing of processing speed during encoding. Under high-load conditions, they showed a reduced P3 amplitude during retrieval, suggesting reduced neural resource allocation was available when the central executive of the working memory was heavily loaded.
