Abstract:Natural organic matter (NOM) is the primary precursor of disinfection by-products (DBPs). However, as emerging environmental contaminants continue to increase in natural waters, there is a possibility of new precursors of DBPs. We investigated the potential of microplastics (MPs), a growing environmental concern, for leaching organic matter (OM) and subsequent DBP formation. Two experimental setups were used, including chlorinated water containing MPs (Cl2-MP), and non-chlorinated water containing MPs (Non-Cl2-MP), using polyethylene (PE), polyethylene tetrahydrate (PET), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as MP materials. The UV absorbance spectra of Cl2-PET/PP/PVC showed peaks at 218 nm, which were significantly correlated with dissolved organic carbon (DOC), indicating lower aromaticity of the leached OM. The DOC concentrations in Cl2-MP samples were several times higher than those in Non-Cl2-MP samples. The leached OM from MPs formed trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) in Cl2-MP samples. Among the MPs tested, PVC showed the highest total THM formation after 7 days, followed by PET, PE, and PP. Brominated THMs were predominant, while HAAs were highly chlorinated. THM formation increased with contact time for PE, PET, and PVC, and decreased for PP. Compared to THMs, the concentration of HAAs was low (highest total THM = 185.5 μg/L per g-MP and highest total HAA = 120.7 μg/L per g-MP). Further, the total THM concentration decreased and the total HAA concentration increased over the reaction period, indicating the leaching of different types of OM with increasing contact time. Additionally, the differences in the pattern of DOC leaching and DBP formation among different MPs suggested changes in the leached OM.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are constantly exposed to sunlight and release dissolved organic matter (DOM) from photodegradation. However, the molecular composition and transformation of such DOM remain unclear, particularly in process engineering like drinking water treatment. We deciphered the molecular characteristics of the DOM leached from MPs and, further, the potential contribution to the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). The leached DOM was dominantly composed of the low molecular weight fraction (<1k Da), which contributed the most to DBP formation, challenging water treatment employing UV and chlorine disinfection. Chain scission and oxidation led to oligomer structures in leachates that were mainly distributed in the range C10-C21 with an incorporated number of oxygen atoms between 1 and 10. The DOM exhibited low O/C-wa (0.31-0.39) and high H/C-wa (1.54-1.69) ratios and became more saturated with increased exposure time. The leached DOM with such characteristics may not be efficiently removed by activated carbon or coagulation, which enriches the formation of DBPs. Information on the molecular composition of MP-derived DOM and the potential of the individual molecular weight fractions as precursors of DBPs is valuable for assessing the potential contribution of MPs to DBP-related risks in drinking water and identifying potential mitigation strategies.
Physicochemical changes in microplastics and formation of DBPs under ozonation

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are substances that pose a risk to both human life and the environment. Their types and production are increasing year on year, and their potential to cause environmental pollution is a worldwide concern. Conventional water treatment processes, particularly coagulation and sedimentation, are not effective at removing all MPs. It is therefore important to assess the morphological changes in the MPs, i.e., the thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and polyethylene (PE), during ozonation and the dissolved organic carbon leaching as well as chloroform formation in the subsequent chlorination. The results show that the appearance and surface chemistry of the MPs changed during the ozonation process, most notably for TPU. The trichloromethane (CHCl3) generation during chlorination was 0.168 and 0.152 μmol/L for TPU and PE, respectively, and the ozone pretreatment significantly increased the CHCl3 yield of TPU, while it had a weak effect on PE. Additional disinfection byproducts (DBPs), including CHCl2Br, CHClBr2, and CHBr3, were produced in the presence of bromide ions in the water column, and the total amount of DBPs produced by PE, PE-O, TPU, and TPU-O was significantly increased to 0.787, 0.814, 0.931, and 1.391 μmol/L, respectively. The study provides useful information for the environmental risk assessment of two representative MPs, i.e., TPU and MPs, in disinfection procedures for drinking water.
Photochlorination-induced degradation of microplastics and interaction with Cr(VI) and amlodipine

Abstract:Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are the important source of microplastics (MPs) in the environment, and disinfection processes bear high potential to degrade MPs. This study investigated the physicochemical degradation, dissolved organic products and interaction with co-existed pollutants (heavy metal and pharmaceutical) on polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) MPs during simulated disinfection processes. Compared to photo or chlorination, photochlorination significantly resulted in the physicochemical degradation, including morphology alteration, fragmentation, and chemical oxidation on PP and PS MPs, but showed relatively low effect on PE, indicating the different resistance among polymers to disinfected treatment. Photochlorination also caused the formation of chain-scission organic compounds and even chlorinated products from MPs (e.g. C11H19O4Cl for PP and monochlorophenol, dichlorophenol, chloroacetophenone and chlorobenzoic acid for PS), which may form disinfection byproducts to induce healthy risk. The adsorption potentials of MPs for Cr(VI) or amlodipine were enhanced by photochlorination since the cracking and formed oxygen functional groups enhanced the pore filling and surface precipitation of Cr(VI), and the electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding with amlodipine. The findings indicated the physicochemical degradation of MPs and the combined pollution with co-existed pollutants, highlighting the health risks of MP-derived organic products during the disinfection treatments (even in normal dosage) in WWTPs.

Characterization of microplastic-derived dissolved organic matter in freshwater: Effects of light irradiation and polymer types

Abstract:This study investigated the impacts of light irradiation and polymer types on the leaching behavior of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from microplastics (MPs) in freshwater. Polypropylene had the highest leaching capacity of DOM after photoaging, followed by polystyrene (PS), polyamide (PA) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). While similarly low levels of DOM were observed in the remaining 5 MP suspensions under UV irradiation and in almost all MP suspensions (except PA) under darkness. These suggest that the photooxidation of some buoyant plastics may influence the carbon cycling of nature waters. Among 9 MP-derived leachates, PET leachates had the highest chromophoric DOM concentration and aromaticity, probably owing to the special benzene rings and carbonyl groups in PET structures and its fast degradation rate. Protein-like substances were the primary fluorescent DOM in MP suspensions (except PS), especially in darkness no other fluorescent substances were found. Considering the bio-labile properties of proteins together, MPs regardless of floating or suspended in an aquatic environment may have prevalent long-term effects on microbial activities. Besides, from monomers to hexamers with newly formed chemical bonds were identified in UV-irradiated MP suspensions. These results will contribute to a deep insight into the potential ecological effects related to MP degradation.

Abstract:The release of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from microplastics (MPs) in the water environment under physical, chemical, and biological transformation has been widely concerned. However, the impacts of released DOM on the subsequent generation of chlorinated disinfection by-products (DBPs) are still unknown. In this study, the leaching behaviors of organic matter from four types of MPs by plasma treatment were investigated, with polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene (PE) as the model MPs. The plasma treatment led to cracks, pits, and loose porous surfaces of MPs, and the C/O ratios of these four MPs significantly decreased. Simultaneously, the long-chain alkyl groups of the four MPs were weakened, and O-containing functional groups were introduced after the plasma treatment. As a result, the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) released from PP, PVC, PS, and PE after 120 min of plasma treatment were 4.35, 4.33, 5.09, and 14.0 mg L−1, respectively. The released conjugated organic compounds contained aromatic hydrocarbons and double bonds or hydroxyl groups, which were soluble microbial byproduct-like and humic acid-like substances. Trichloromethane (TCM) and dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) were the main DBPs in trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). The DBPs in the four MPs filtrates were mainly HAAs, which reached 811.2, 780.2, 1234.7, and 420.7 μg L−1 in the PVC, PP, PE, and PS filtrates after 120 min of plasma treatment, respectively. Correlations among DBPs, UV–visible and fluorescence components of these four MPs were established. Overall, the released byproducts of MPs had the potential to be the precursors of DBPs, and thus their risks deserve more attention.

Abstract:The occurrence and transformation of microplastics (MPs) remaining in the water treatment plants has recently attracted considerable attention. However, few efforts have been made to investigate the behavior of dissolved organic matter (DOM) derived from MPs during oxidation processes. In this study, the characteristics of DOM leached from MPs during typical ultraviolet (UV)-based oxidation was focused on. The toxicity and disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation potentials of MP-derived DOM were further investigated. Overall, UV-based oxidation significantly enhanced the aging and fragmentation of highly hydroscopic MPs. The mass scales of leachates to MPs increased from 0.03% - 0.18% at initial stage to 0.09% - 0.71% after oxidation, which were significantly higher than those leached by natural light exposure. Combined fluorescence analysis with high resolution mass spectrometer scan confirmed that the dominant MP-derived DOM are chemical additives. PET-derived DOM and PA6-derived DOM showed inhibition of Vibrio fischeri activity with corresponding EC50 of 2.84 mg/L and 4.58 mg/L of DOC. Bioassay testing with Chlorella vulgaris and Microcystis aeruginosa showed that high concentrations of MP-derived DOM inhibited algal growth by disrupting the cell membrane permeability and integrity. MP-derived DOM had a similar chlorine consumption (1.63 ± 0.41 mg/DOC) as surface water (1.0 - 2.0 mg/DOC), and MP-derived DOM mainly served as precursors for the investigated DBPs. Contrary to the results of previous studies, the DBP yields from MP-derived DOM were relatively lower than those of aquatic DOM under simulated distribution system conditions. This suggests that MP-derived DOM itself rather than serving as DBP precursor might be potential toxic concern.
Deciphering fluorescent and molecular fingerprint of dissolved organic matter leached from microplastics in water

Abstract:Despite extensive research into the presence and behavior of microplastics (MPs) in the environment, limited attention has been given to the investigation of the characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) that leaches from MPs (MPs-DOM). Herein, two frequently encountered plastic particles in aquatic environments, specifically polyethylene terephthalate (PET)- and polyethylene (PE)-MPs, were subjected to leaching in the aquatic settings for seven days, both in the absence of light and under UV irradiation. Measurements of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) indicated that UV exposure enhanced the liberation of DOM from PET-MPs, while PE-MPs did not exhibit such leaching. After UV treatment for seven days, the DOM released from PET-MPs increased by 25 times, while that from PE-MPs remained almost unchanged. Then, the molecular diversity and the evolving formation of DOM originating from different MPs were comprehensively analyzed with fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS). Specifically, both PET- and PE-DOM exhibited three fluorescence signatures, with the predominant C1 (tryptophan-like) component showing a decline in PET-DOM and a rise in PE-DOM during aging. The FT-ICR-MS analysis unveiled that PET-DOM grew more recalcitrant under UV exposure, while PE-DOM became increasingly labile. In brief, UV irradiation influences MPs-DOM release and transformation differently, depending on the plastic composition. This highlights the significance of exploring MPs-DOM transformation in securing environmental safety.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) in drinking water are predominantly < 10 µm. The leaching of MPs derived dissolved organic matters (MP-DOM) from 5 µm polypropylene MPs (PP-MPs) and polystyrene MPs (PS-MPs) and the formation of MP-DOM derived disinfection byproducts during chlorination disinfection were first investigated. Comparably, PS-MPs are more vulnerable to chlorination and the primary attacks are on para C in aromatic side-chains via electrophilic Cl-substitution and oxidation by two-electron transfer. The O/C and Cl/C ratio of polystyrene MPs was linear and exponential versus initial available Cl2 concentrations, respectively. The significant PS-DOM leaching was observed with initial available Cl2 of 4.0 mg/L (USEPA recommended upper dose). As the initial available Cl2 concentration increased to 8.0 mg/L, the adsorption of chloro-phenolic-components of 200 Daltons in PS-DOM by 5 µm PS-MPs was observed for the first time. Trichloromethane (TCM) was identified as the dominant disinfection byproduct with a formation potential of 60.3 ± 7.8 and 73.7 ± 9.8 μg/mg for PS-DOM and PP-DOM, respectively. The derived TCM could adsorb onto PS-MPs followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. Extreme chlorination could reduce the maximal adsorption capacity of TCM on 5 µm PS-MPs from 196.68 ± 48.66 to 146.02 ± 32.98 μg/g. Thus, PS-MPs act as precursors and carriers of TCM in chlorination.

Abstract:The presence of microplastics in surface waters poses potential hazards to both organisms and human health. Traditional water treatment processes have proven to be inadequate in effectively removing microplastics. Besides, previous studies have often utilized disinfectant dosages that surpass those commonly employed in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs), and the biotoxicity changes induced by microplastics after disinfection remain largely unexplored. To address these knowledge gaps, our study aimed to investigate the impact of practical disinfectant dosages on the leaching of organic compounds from microplastics and the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Furthermore, the resulting acute and genetic toxicity was evaluated through bioassays. Our findings revealed an elevated release of dissolved organic matter (DOM) derived from microplastics. Additionally, both acute and genetic toxicity increased following various disinfection processes. Specifically, chlorination exhibited the highest level of toxicity in short-term disinfection, while the pretreatment of ozonation followed by residual chlorination demonstrated the highest toxicity in the long-term disinfection, which was correlated with the concentration of CHCl3 formed. These findings will advance our understanding of the potential risks associated with microplastics during various disinfection processes, with the ultimate goal of safeguarding water supplies.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), as emerging pollutants, have attracted worldwide attention due to their ecological and biological toxicity. As microplastics have been detected frequently in drinking water, it is essential to evaluate the physicochemical property change and removal behaviors of MPs in drinking water treatment processes. This study selected polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) as the representative, and investigated the variations in its physicochemical characteristics after oxidizing by several conventional pre-oxidants (potassium permanganate, sodium hypochlorite, and ozone). Furthermore, coagulation, sedimentation, and filtration experiments were conducted to verify whether pre-oxidization influenced the removal of microplastics. The results indicate that pre-oxidization indeed changed the hydrophobicity, specific surface area, and functional groups of PE-MPs surface exposing to water phase. These changes affected the adsorption of trace pollutants with different hydrophobicity (acesulfame, carbamazepine, and nitrobenzene). However, such changes showed a subtle effect on the removal of PE MPs by coagulation-sedimentation-filtration processes. Current findings suggest that pre-oxidization may increase the risk of pathogenic microorganisms due to the increasing oxidization-induced shelter ability of MPs towards microorganisms.

Abstract:Disinfection in water treatments induces microplastics (MPs) to produce various derivative products, among which the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are still poorly understood. Ultraviolet (UV), chlorine and UV/chlorine disinfections were used to treat polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) and polyvinylchloride (PVC) in this study. Modifications were observed on the MP surfaces, including melting, cracks, folds, and even forming oxygen-containing structures, resulting in the release of a diversity of VOCs. The polymer types of MPs influenced the VOCs characteristics. PP released alkanes, alkenes and aldehydes, while PVC released alkanes, alkenes and halogenated hydrocarbons. VOCs from PS were dominated by unique aromatic alkanes, alkenes and aldehydes. These derived VOCs are generated during different disinfections with distinct mechanisms. UV-C at 254 nm induced direct scission and radical oxidation on MPs. The derived VOCs were mainly bond-breaking fragments. Chlorination relied on HOCl/OCl- electrophilic reactions, resulting fewer VOCs since C-C skeleton MPs have strong resistance to electrophilic reactions. UV/chlorination promotes the generation of chlorine radicals and hydroxyl radicals, thereby causing oxidative damage. Various oxidized VOCs, such as benzaldehyde and acetophenone, were formed. The disinfection reactions can produce various VOCs from MPs, posing potential risks to the ecological environment and human beings.
Comparison of chlorination resistance of biodegradable microplastics and conventional microplastics during the disinfection process in water treatments

Abstract:Nowadays, microplastics (MPs) widely exist in the environment, and water treatment plants are important sources of MPs. Chlorine is widely used in the disinfection process in water treatment plants and has strong oxidation, however, the chemical and physical properties changes of MPs during chlorination were unclear. Thus, in this study, based on the actual used chlorine concentrations, different chlorination conditions were simulated to study the variation of MPs after chlorination. Meanwhile, the produced disinfection by-products were monitored. The results showed that under high chlorination concentration conditions, functional groups of polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), and polylactic acid (PLA) changed, while no peak shift or change of poly (butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) could be detected. Moreover, after chlorination, partial yellowing and cracks appeared on PS, PLA, and PBAT, while PE remained white and showed little morphological changes. Besides, chlorination led to the narrowing of the cold crystallization peak and melting peak of PLA, while chlorination had little influence on the crystal structure of PE and PBAT. Furthermore, the reaction between PLA and chlorine mostly produced more trichloromethane than other types of MPs. Consequently, when chlorine concentrations were in the range of 2.5 to 5000 mg/L, the chlorination resistance was PBAT/PE > PLA > PS. Specifically, PBAT had the strongest chlorination resistance in terms of chemical properties, while PE had the strongest chlorination resistance in terms of physical properties. Therefore, the degradability of biodegradable MPs is not higher than that of conventional MPs in all cases. Moreover, it should be noted that most changes occurred only in high chlorine concentrations. Thus, neither conventional MPs nor biodegradable MPs can be completely degraded during the chlorination process in water treatments.

Abstract:Chlorination on microplastic (MP) biofilms was comprehensively investigated with respect to disinfection efficiency, morphology, and core microbiome. The experiments were performed under various conditions: i) MP particles; polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS), ii) MP biofilms; Escherichia coli for single-species and river water microorganisms for multiple-species, iii) different chlorine concentrations, and iv) different chlorine exposure periods. As a result, chlorination effectively inactivated the MP biofilm microorganisms. The disinfection efficiency increased with increasing the free chlorination concentration and exposure periods for both single- and multiple-species MP biofilms. The multiple-species MP biofilms were inactivated 1.3-6.0 times less than single-species MP biofilms. In addition, the PP-MP biofilms were more vulnerable to chlorination than the PS-MP biofilms. Morphology analysis verified that chlorination detached most MP biofilms, while a small part still remained. Interestingly, chlorination strongly changed the biofilm microbiome on MPs; the relative abundance of some microbes increased after the chlorination, suggesting they could be regarded as chlorine-resistant bacteria. Some potential pathogens were also remained on the MP particles after the chlorination. Notably, chlorination was effective in inactivating the MP biofilms. Further research should be performed to evaluate the impacts of residual MP biofilms on the environment.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have received an increasing attention because of their ubiquitous presence and aquatic toxicity associated with MPs and MP-bound contaminants in the natural water. This review is to critically examine the chemical additives leached from MPs, the altered contaminant behaviors and the resulting changes in their aquatic ecotoxicity. Available data suggest that heavy metals Zn, Cr, Pb, and Cd regulated and present in plastics at the sub-mg g-1 to mg g-1 level can leach a significant amount depending on MPs size, aging, pH, and salinity conditions. MP-bound organic contaminants are primarily additive-derived (e.g., brominated diphenyl ethers, nonylphenol, and bisphenol A) at the µg g-1 to mg g-1 level, and secondarily pyrogenic and legacy origins (e.g., PAHs and PCBs) in the range of ng g-1 and mg g-1. MPs tend to have higher but more variable sorption capacities for organic compounds than metals (1.77 ± 2.34 vs. 0.82 ± 0.94 mg g-1). MPs alter the behavior of heavy metals through the electrostatic interactions and surface complexation, while the transport of additive derived organic compounds are altered primarily through hydrophobic effect as supported by a positive correlation (R2 = 0.71) between the logarithmic MPs-adsorbed concentrations and octanol/water partition coefficients (KOW) of organic compounds. MPs constitute less than 0.01% of the total mass of aquatic particulates in typical waters, but play a discernible role in the local partitioning and long-distance movement of contaminants. MPs alone exert higher toxicity to invertebrates than algae; however, when MPs co-occur with pollutants, both synergistic and antagonistic toxicities are observed depending mainly on the ingestibility of MPs, the extent of sorption, MPs as a transport vector or a sink to scavenge pollutants. We finally suggest several key areas of future research directions and needed data concerning the role of MPs in mitigating pollutant leaching, transport and risk under conditions mimicking natural and polluted waters.
Microplastics in Water: A Review of Characterization and Removal Methods

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), as an emerging persistent pollutant, exist and accumulate in the environment, which has garnered them considerable global attention. While the origin, dispersion, distribution, and impact of MPs have been extensively documented, the characterization and removal strategies for MPs present ongoing challenges. In this literature review, we introduce in detail the advantages and disadvantages of seven characterization methods, from macroscopic to microscopic, from visual observation to microscopic characterization, and discuss their scope of application. In addition, 12 treatment schemes were summarized from the three treatment directions of physics, chemistry, and biology, including filtration, adsorption, extraction, magnetic separation, oil film separation, Fenton oxidation, electrochemical oxidation, persulfate advanced oxidation, photocatalytic oxidation, coagulation, electrocoagulation, foam flotation, anaerobic–anoxic–aerobic activated sludge, enzymatic degradation, bacterial degradation, and fungal degradation. Additionally, we present a critical assessment of the advantages and drawbacks associated with these removal strategies. Building upon the findings of our research team, we propose a novel approach to degrade MPs, which combines three-dimensional electrocatalytic oxidation technology with persulfate advanced oxidation technology. This advanced oxidation technology achieves 100% degradation of antibiotics in water, can degrade large molecules into environmentally harmless small molecules, and should also be a very good strategy for the degradation of MPs. Compared with two-dimensional electrocatalytic technology, the degradation efficiency is higher and the degradation cost is lower This review intends to propel further advancements for addressing the issue of MP pollution.

Abstract:Considerable research has been conducted to evaluate microplastics (MPs) as vehicles for the transfer of hazardous pollutants in organisms. However, little effort has been devoted to the chemical release of hazardous additive-derived pollutants from MPs in gut simulations. This study looked at the leaching kinetics of organophosphate esters (OPFRs) from polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) MPs in the presence of gut surfactants, specifically sodium taurocholate, at two biologically relevant temperatures for marine organisms. Diffusion coefficients of OPFRs ranged from 1.71 × 10 −20 to 4.04 × 10 −18 m 2 s −1 in PP and 2.91 × 10 −18 to 1.51 × 10 −15 m 2 s −1 in PS. The accumulation factors for OPFRs in biota-plastic and biota-sediment interactions ranged from 1.52 × 10 −3 −69.1 and 0.02−0.7, respectively. Based on B3LYP/6-31G (d,p) calculations, the biodynamic model analysis revealed a slight increase in the bioaccumulation of OPFRs at a minor dose of 0.05% MPs. However, at higher concentrations (0.5% and 5% MPs), there was a decrease in bioaccumulation compared to the lower concentration for most OPFR compounds. In general, the ingestion of PE MPs notably contributed to the bioaccumulation of OPFRs in lugworms, whereas the contribution of PP and PS MPs was minimal. This could vary among sites exhibiting varying levels of MP concentrations or MPs displaying stronger affinities towards chemicals.

Abstract:Microplastic pollution has become emerging environmental concern around world. The wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are attributed to a major pathway for microplastics (MPs) to enter into aquatic environment. To understand the fate and control strategies of MPs in WWTPs, we investigated MPs at a full-scale WWTP, Eastern China, with two parallel wastewater treatment systems, i.e. oxidation ditch (OD) and membrane bioreactor (MBR) for case study. The influent MPs consisted of polyethylene terephthalate (PET, 47%), polystyrene (PS, 20%), polyethylene (PE, 18%) and polypropylene (PP, 15%). MP morphotypes dominated in fragments (65%) and fibers (21%), which mainly were PET, with limited films (12%) and foams (2%). Typical plastic microbeads were not observed. The dominant size of MPs was >500 mu m (40%) and 62.5-125 mu m (29%). MP concentrations increased across the treatment systems depends on facility of treatment process. Influent MPs were removed by 99.5% in MBR system versus 97% in OD system on the basis of plastic mass while 82.1% versus 53.6% on MP number. The removed MPs accumulated in sludge phase. MBR system has much higher MP removal efficiency than OD system, likely due to membrane filtration. The results suggest that the source control of MPs by eliminating MP fibers from laundry facilities, banning use of plastic microbeads, Styrofoam products and plastic bags and properly selecting WWTP treatment unit could significantly reduce the mass and number of MPs from WWTPs. Insight into the effect of UVC-based advanced oxidation processes on the interaction of typical microplastics and their derived disinfection byproducts during disinfection

Abstract:The 10 μm polystyrene and polyethylene-terephthalate microplastics (MPs), prevalent in finished drink water, were employed to investigate the effect of normal dosage UVC-based advanced-oxidation-processes (UVC-AOPs) on the interaction between MPs and their derived disinfection-byproducts (DBPs) during subsequent chlorination-disinfection, in the presence of Br - , for the first time. The results indicated that UVC/H 2 O 2 caused higher leaching of microplastic-derived dissolved-organic-matter (MP-DOM), with smaller and narrower molecular-weight-distribution than UVC and UVC/peroxymonosulfate (UVC/PMS). The trihalomethanes (as dominant DBPs) molar-formation-potentials (THMs-MFPs) for MP-DOM leached in different UVC-AOPs followed the order of UVC/H 2 O 2 >UVC/PMS>UVC. The adsorption of formed THMs, especially Br-THMs, back on MPs was observed in all MPs suspensions with or without UVC-AOPs pre-treatment. The Cl-THMs adsorption by MPs is more sensitive to UVC-AOPs than Br-THMs. The adsorption experiments showed that UVC-AOPs reduce the capacity but increase the rate of THMs adsorption by MPs, suggesting the halogen and hydrogen bonding forces governed the THMs adsorption rate while hydrophobic interaction determines their adsorption capacity. The UVC-AOPs pre-treatment sharply increased the total yield of THMs via both indirectly inducing MP-DOM leaching and directly increasing the THMs-MFPs of MPs by oxidation. 21.36–41.96% of formed THMs adsorbed back on the UVC-AOPs-pretreated MPs, which might increase the toxicity of MPs.
