Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is potentially toxic and exceptionally stable attributed to its robust CF bond, which is hard to be removed by UV/TiO2 systems. In this research, bismuth nanoparticle (Bi NP) modified titanium oxides (Bi/TiO2) were synthesized by a simple photochemical deposition-calcination method and were applied as photocatalysts for the first time to degrade PFOA. The removal rate of 50 mg/L PFOA reached 99.3 % with 58.6 % defluorination rate after 30 min of irradiation via a mercury lamp. Bi/TiO2 exhibited superior performance in PFOA degradation compared to commercial photocatalysts (TiO2, Ga2O3, Bi2O3 and In2O3). In addition, Bi/TiO2 showed high degradation activity under actual sunlight, achieved 100 % removal rate and 59.3 % defluorination rate within 2 h. Bi NPs increase the light trapping ability of Bi/TiO2 and promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs via local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, which results in more photogenerated holes (h+) and hydroxyl radicals (OH). Combined with DFT calculations and intermediate detections, the degradation reaction is initiated from the oxidation of the PFOA carboxyl group via h+, followed by the loss of the CF2 unit step by step with the participation of OH. This work presents a novel approach for the practical implementation of TiO2-based photocatalysts to achieve highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs).

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has raised significant health concerns due to its high ecotoxicological risks and difficulties in removal by conventional water treatment process. Previous studies have demonstrated that photocatalytic techniques exhibit great potential in PFOA removal. However, the underlying mechanism of the degradation process has not been fully understood, particularly the contribution of the facet effects of catalysts. In this study, a combination of experiments and first-principles calculations were conducted to shed light on the facet-dependence of the interfacial interactions and oxidation during the PFOA degradation process. We proved that the interfacial interaction was essential in initiating the hole-dominated degradation process, and the {110}R3̅c facet of hexagonal In2O3 features the strongest interaction with PFOA. The overall defluorination rate was mainly controlled by the hole-dominated oxidation processes under UV irradiation, which were further attributed to the electronic structures and reaction site distributions of different In2O3 surfaces. This study provides molecular-level insights on the facet-dependent PFOA catalytic degradation process, which can guide the rational design of photocatalysts to achieve superior decontamination efficiency.
Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Perfluorooctanoic Acid by Mesoporous Sb2O3/TiO2 Heterojunctions

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a typical perfluorinated carboxylic acid, is an emerging type of permanent organic pollutants that are regulated by the Stockholm Convention. The degradation of PFOA, however, is quite challenging largely due to the ultra-high stability of C-F bonds. Compared with other techniques, photocatalytic degradation offers the potential advantages of simple operation under mild conditions as well as exceptional decomposition and defluorination efficiency. Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) is one of the most frequently used photocatalysts, but so far, the pristine nanosized TiO 2 (e.g., the commercial P25) has been considered inefficient for PFOA degradation, since the photo-generated hydroxyl radicals from TiO 2 are not able to directly attack C-F bonds. Mesoporous Sb 2 O 3 /TiO 2 heterojunctions were therefore rationally designed in this work, of which the confined Sb 2 O 3 nanoparticles in mesoporous TiO 2 framework could not only tune the band structure and also increase the number of active sites for PFOA degradation. It was found that, after loading Sb 2 O 3 , the absorption of UV light was enhanced, indicating a higher efficiency of light utilization; while the band gap was reduced, which accelerated the separation of photo-generated charge carriers; and most importantly, the valence band edge of the Sb 2 O 3 /TiO 2 heterojunction was significantly lifted so as to prevent the occurrence of hydroxyl radical pathway. Under the optimal ratio of Sb 2 O 3 –TiO 2 , the resulting catalysts managed to remove 81.7% PFOA in 2 h, with a degradation kinetics 4.2 times faster than the commercial P25. Scavenger tests and electron spin resonance spectra further revealed that such improvement was mainly attributed to the formation of superoxide radicals and photo-generated holes, in which the former drove the decarboxylation from C 7 F 15 COOH–C 7 F 15 • , and the latter promoted the direct electron transfer for the conversion of C 7 F 15 COO − –C 7 F 15 COO • . The Sb 2 O 3 /TiO 2 photocatalysts were highly recyclable, with nearly 90% of the initial activity being retained after five consecutive cycles, guaranteeing the feasibility of long-term operation.

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is detected widely in surface and groundwater globally. Its removal poses a significant challenge due to its high chemical stability. This study demonstrates efficient PFOA degradation using poly-triazine-imides-tailored defective Bi 5 O 7 I (PTI/BB). Under 300 W Xe irradiation, 1 μg·L −1 PFOA could be degraded to 9.86 ng·L −1 after 3 h in the presence of 0.5 g·L −1 25 % PTI/BB. The mechanism investigation reveals that the oxygen vacancy (OV) in partially reduced Bi/Bi 5 O 7 I (BB) generates impurity states, enhancing the light-harvesting capacity. Furthermore, forming a type II heterojunction between conjugated PTI and BB facilitates the efficient separation of photogenerated carriers. The resulting photogenerated electrons (reduction) and holes (oxidation) drive hydrogenation reduction and oxidative decarboxylation of PFOA, respectively. This synergistic effect consequently achieves significant defluorination of PFOA. The proposed PFOA degradation pathway via the PTI/BB catalyst offers new insights into the catalyst design for photocatalytic degradation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Abstract:The environmental persistence, high toxicity and wide spread presence of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in aquatic environment urgently necessitate the development of advanced technologies to eliminate PFOA. Here, the simultaneous application of a heterogeneous In2O3 photocatalyst and homogeneous persulfate oxidation (In2O3/PS) was demonstrated for PFOA degradation under solar light irradiation. The synergistic effect of direct hole oxidation and in-situ generated radicals, especially surface radicals, was found to contribute significantly to PFOA defluorination. Fourier infrared transform (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman, electrochemical scanning microscope (SECM) tests and density functional theory (DFT) calculation showed that the pre-adsorption of PFOA and PS onto In2O3 surface were dramatically critical steps, which could efficiently facilitate the direct hole oxidation of PFOA, and boost PS activation to yield high surface-confined radicals, thus prompting PFOA degradation. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to regulate the operation parameters for PFOA defluorination. Outstanding PFOA decomposition (98.6%) and near-stoichiometric equivalents of fluorides release were achieved within illumination 10 h. An underlying mechanism for PFOA destruction was proposed via a stepwise losing CF2 unit. The In2O3/PS remediation system under solar light provides an economical, sustainable and environmentally friendly approach for complete mineralization of PFOA, displaying a promising potential for treatment of PFOA-containing water.

Abstract:Ischemic optic neuropathy developed in five eyes of four patients with optic nerve drusen. Two of the patients were in their 20s, a decade when idiopathic ischemic optic neuropathy is rare. This argues against a chance concurrence of drusen and idiopathic ischemic optic neuropathy. Infarction of the distal portion of the optic nerve in patients with drusen may result from mechanical distortion of blood vessels in the laminar and prelaminar regions.

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which is an emerging contaminant, has received extensive attention in recent times due to its high toxicity and environmental risk. In this study, BiOI supported on Zn-Al hydrotalcite (BOI0.04-BHZA) was calcined at 400 ℃ to obtain flower-shaped Bi5O7I/ZnO n-n heterojunction microspheres for the photocatalytic degradation of PFOA under visible light irradiation. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Compared with BOI (k1 = 0.0044 h−1), BHZA (k2 = 0.0054 h−1), and BOI0.04-BHZA (k3 = 0.0073 h−1), the degradation rate constant of Bi5O7I/ZnO n-n heterojunction microspheres (k4 = 0.013 h−1) increased by 2.9, 2.4, and 1.8 times, respectively. Approximately 91% of PFOA was degraded after 6 h of irradiation. The excellent photocatalytic performance was ascribed to the Bi5O7I/ZnO n-n heterojunction formed by calcination, which enlarged the photoresponse to the visible light region and increased the separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs. Moreover, the degradation pathway of PFOA was investigated using high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and ion chromatography assisted by density functional theory calculations. The results demonstrated that the carboxylic groups of PFOA was vulnerable to attack by the photoproduction hole. The formed unstable perfluoroheptyl radicals transformed into shorter chain perfluorocarboxylic acids by the elimination of CF2 units. It was expected that this Bi5O7I/ZnO n-n heterojunction photocatalyst would be a promising candidate for PFOA treatment.

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (C(7)F(15)COOH, PFOA) has increasingly attracted worldwide concerns due to its global occurrence and resistance to most conventional treatment processes. Though TiO(2)-based photocatalysis is strong enough to decompose most organics, it is not effective for PFOA decomposition. We first find that indium oxide (In(2)O(3)) possesses significant activity for PFOA decomposition under UV irradiation, with the rate constant about 8.4 times higher than that by TiO(2). The major intermediates of PFOA were C(2)-C(7) shorter-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids, implying that the reaction proceeded in a stepwise manner. By using diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, (19)F magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance, and electron spin resonance, we demonstrate that the terminal carboxylate group of PFOA molecule tightly coordinates to the In(2)O(3) surface in a bidentate or bridging configuration, which is beneficial for PFOA to be directly decomposed by photogenerated holes of In(2)O(3) under UV irradiation, while PFOA coordinates to TiO(2) in a monodentate mode, and photogenerated holes of TiO(2) preferentially transform to hydroxyl radicals, which are inert to react with PFOA. PFOA decomposition in wastewater was inhibited by bicarbonate and other organic matters; however, their adverse impacts can be mostly avoided via pH adjustment and ozone addition.
Site-Selective Loading of Single-Atom Pt on TiO2 for Photocatalytic Oxidation and Reductive Hydrodefluorination

Abstract:Separating the redox sites of photocatalysts is one of most promising strategies to promote an efficient photoinduced charge transfer of semiconductor photocatalysis. Herein, we present a site-selective loading of single-atom Pt (Pt-1) on facet-engineered TiO2 to achieve decomposition of recalcitrant halogenated water pollutants, including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Positively charged Pt-1 are atomically dispersed catalytic sites that are selectively loaded onto the reductive sites of tailored TiO2 to attract the photoinduced electrons efficiently. This enhances the number of holes, and consequently hydroxyl radicals, remaining on the sites of facet-engineered TiO2, confirmed by the enhancement of degradation of sulfamethoxazole and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. While Pt nanoparticle cocatalysts consume photoinduced electrons for the reduction of oxygen molecules, site-specifically loaded Pt-1 produce surface hydrogen atoms and enhance hydrogen spillover onto the TiO2 surface, to achieve efficient hydrodefluorination of PFOA via the cleavage of the C-F bond with the Ti-H bond. The site-selective loading of Pt-1 on facet-engineered TiO2 serves as a versatile platform that harnesses both reductive and oxidative degradation of emerging aqueous pollutants.
Photocatalytic degradation of PFOA by hydrangea-like BiOCl with high oxygen vacancies co-mediated under superoxide radicals and holes

Abstract:In this study, BiOCl with a unique morphology was prepared by controlling the amount of methanol used as a solvent. The light utilization rate was improved by increasing the oxygen vacancies on the catalyst surface and changing its morphology. Oxygen vacancies and free radicals of photocatalysis were tested by ESR. The degradation mechanism of PFOA was studied by FT-IR, LC-MS, and TOC analysis of photocatalysts. The results showed that BiOCl was transformed from traditional flakes to spherical hydrangea, and the defluorination efficiency was significantly improved after adding methanol in the preparation process. Under simulated sunlight irradiation, the defluorination rate of PFOA reached 63.1 % within 30 min, which is 3.50 times higher than that of BiOCl (18.0 %) prepared without adding methanol. Mechanism studies have shown that PFOA coordinates with the catalyst surface through a single-dentate bridge, using the terminal carboxyl group. The defluorination is completed under the combined action of h + and superoxide radical (·O 2 − ). The oxygen vacancies on the catalyst surface promote the charge separation and the contact of PFOA, two kinds of degradation pathways also were proposed. This study introduces additional oxygen vacancies to solar-driven photocatalysts to degrade PFOA, providing a novel approach to enhance the photocatalytic defluorination of PFOA.

Abstract:Heterogeneous photocatalytic decomposition of perfluoroocatanoic acid (PFOA) by TiO(2) under 254 nm UV light was investigated. Adding oxalic acid as a hole-scavenger significantly accelerated PFOA decomposition under nitrogen atmosphere. Fluoride ion, formic acid and six shorter-chain perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs) bearing C(2)-C(7) were identified as intermediates. When using perchloric acid (HClO(4)) as a replacement of oxalic acid to maintain the same pH of the reaction solution, PFOA did not decomposition efficiently. Compared with oxalic acid, potassium iodide (KI, another hole-scavenger) also led to a slower PFOA decomposition, while the addition of an electron acceptor (potassium persulfate, K(2)S(2)O(8)) obviously inhibited PFOA decomposition. This suggested that oxalic acid played more than one role in PFOA decomposition rather than simply providing acidity and acting as a hole-scavenger. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements confirmed the existence of carboxyl anion radicals (CO(2)(-)) in the photocatalytic process, which was a result of the reaction between oxalic acid and photogenerated hole. These findings indicated that PFOA decomposition was primarily induced by CO(2)(-) radicals, although photogenerated electron was also conducive to PFOA decomposition. A possible mechanism for PFOA decomposition was proposed.

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) is environmentally stable and endocrine-disrupting. It was resistant to conventional biodegradation and advanced oxidation processes. Electrochemical oxidation method was adopted to degrade PFOA. The anodes, including BDD, Pt, Ti, Ti/RuO2, Ti/RuO2-IrO2, Ti/In2O3, Ti/SnO2-Sb2O5,-IrO2, Ti/SnO2-Sb2O5,-RhO2, Ti/SnO2-Sb2O5, Ti/ SnO2-Sb2O5,-CeO2 and Ti/SnO2-Sb2O5-Bi2O3, were selected as the candidate materials. The oxygen evolution potential (OEP) were determined by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). The degradation ratios and the defluorination ratios were used to evaluate the oxidation ability of anodic materials. Ultrasonic electrochemical oxidation indirectly demonstrated that direct electron transfer was the initial step for PFOA decomposition. The anodes of Ti/SnO,-Sb20 ,-Bi2,03, Ti/SnO-Sb ,O,-CeO,, Ti/SnO2-Sb20, and BDD effectively degraded PFOA, and the decomposition ratios were 89. 8% , 89. 8% , 93. 3% and 98. 0% , respectively. The removal ratios of PFOA on Ti/ SnO2-Sb2O5,-RhO2, Ti/SnO2-Sb2O5-IrO2, and Ti/In2O3 anodes were low, and the values were 2. 1%, 2.3% , 12. 5% and 3.1%, respectively. However, Ti, Ti/RuO2 and Ti/RuO2-IrO2, had no effect on PFOA. PFOA molecule transferred electrons to the anode, decarboxylated, and followed the CF2, unzipping cycle. The intermediate products detected were C6F13 COO- , C5F11COO-, C4F9COO- and C3F7,COO-.

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a synthetic organic compound widely used in commercial and industrial products. Due to its high persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicological properties, PFOA poses a serious risk to human health and the natural environment. Photocatalysis, as a clean energy technology for the potential removal of PFOA, has attracted considerable attention in recent years. However, the efficiency of the photodegradation of PFOA is limited mainly due to three reasons: (i) low light utilization, (ii) rapid electron-hole recombination, and (iii) low utilization of photogenerated carriers. Therefore, this review aims to provide a systematic summary based on current state-of-the-art approaches to designing and fabricating semiconductor photocatalysts to improve the rate of PFOA degradation. Specifically, the fundamental mechanism of photodegradation processes is first introduced, followed by a review of the improvement approaches for enhanced visible-light absorption of photocatalysts, inhibition of electron-hole recombination, and utilization of photogenerated carriers. In addition, this review discusses the principal effects of different semiconductor modifications on their performance in photodegradation systems. Finally, a summary and outlook on the challenges and future directions of semiconductor photocatalysis in practical water treatment are provided. This review contributes to understanding photodegradation mechanisms, promoting photocatalyst development, and opening a pathway for the sustainable treatment of PFOA in water.

Abstract:The electrochemical decomposition of persistent. perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) with a Ti/SnO2-Sb-Bi electrode was demonstrated in this study. After 2 h electrolysis, over 99% of PFOA (25 mL of 50 mg.L-1) was degraded with a first-order kinetic constant of 1.93 h(-1). The intermediate products including short-chain perfluorocarboxyl anions (CF3COO-, C2F5COO-, C3F2COO-, C4F9COO-, C5F11COO-, and C6F13COO-) and F were detected in the aqueous solution. The electrochemical oxidation mechanism was revealed, that PFOA decomposition first occurred through a direct one electron transfer from the carboxyl group in PFOA to the anode at the potential of 3.37 V (vs saturated calomel electrode, SCE). After that, the PFOA radical was decarboxylated to form perfluoroheptyl radical which allowed a defluorination reaction between perfluoroheptyl radical and hydroxyl radical/O-2. Electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrum further confirmed that the oxidation of PFOA on the Ti/SnO2-Sb-Bi electrode proceeded from the carboxyl group in PFOA rather than C C cleavage, and the decomposition processes followed the CF2 unzipping cycle. The electrochemical technique with the Ti/SnO2-Sb-Bi electrode provided a potential method for PFOA degradation in the aqueous solution.
Efficient photocatalytic decomposition of PFOA over BiOI 1-x with low power LED light

Abstract:In recent years, the academic community has shown significant interest in per - or polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFAS) due to their challenging degradation and potential health risks. Photocatalysis has been investigated for PFAS decomposition due to its environmentally friendly nature. In this study, BiOI with abundant iodine vacancies was synthesized through solvothermal and calcination methods (referred to as BiOI 1-x ), and was used for PFAS degradation with a low power UV light source. Compared to pure BiOI, BIOI 1-x showed higher photocatalytic activity towards PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid). Within 5 h under 5 W LED light irradiation, the degradation rate of PFOA reached 51.9 % with BiOI 1-x calcined at 440 °C (No significant degradation of PFAS was observed with pure BiOI). Capture experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and electrochemical experiments revealed that the main active species in the system were photogenerated holes, followed by hydroxyl radicals. Furthermore, the presence of iodine vacancies significantly improved the efficiency of charge carrier separation and enhanced the photocatalytic performance. Finally, a hypothetical degradation pathway for PFOA in this system was suggested. This study achieved efficient degradation of PFAS under low power LED light (5 W), emphasizing its significant practical importance in terms of energy conservation.

Abstract:The centrifugation constitutes a fundamental stage in the blood components preparation as fresh frozen plasma and platelets rich plasma. The measure of the total effect of centrifugation (VT) is achieved with an integrator "w2dt". This parameter characterizes, in an unique way, the preparation procedure of a blood component. The value VT is determined and then sticked on the integrator, which made the rotation stop as soon as the preselected effect of centrifugation is reached. Thanks to this accessory, the authors have analysed the relative importance of the three data: acceleration, constant speed and deceleration, on the total effect of centrifugation. This analysis has induced them to a new approach of the centrifugation. For the authors, the classic notion of rotation time at constant speed, become insufficient. In blood transfusion, several applications are possible. The authors have determined the optimal conditions of platelets rich plasma (yield higher than 80% during a minimum real time) and platelets concentrate preparation with two different centrifuges, Sorvall RC3B and Jouan K 110 SX, equipped with Sorvall Integrator. The reproductibility of the experiments is satisfying when the centrifuged weight is comparatively constant. The standardization of centrifugation technics will be easier when the rotation radius will be included in the calculation of the total effect of centrifugation, thanks to integration.
Boosting PFOA photocatalytic removal from water using highly adsorptive and sunlight-responsive ZIF67/MIL-100(Fe) modified C 3 N 4

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely used in many industrial and food processes. Their discharge into the environment shows a serious threat because of their toxicity, non-biodegradability and high mobility in water and soil. Photocatalytic reaction is confirmed an effective way for the degradation of PFOA. Photocatalytic materials with multifunctional properties can boost the generation of oxidizing materials, enhance the degradation efficiency of target pollutants. Herein, we report an easy-synthesis of ZIF67@C 3 N 4 and MIL-100(Fe)@C 3 N 4 by in-situ hydrothermal growth route for the photocatalytic degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Unlike bare g-C 3 N 4 , ZIF67@C 3 N 4 and MIL-100(Fe)@C 3 N 4 composites exhibit higher specific surface areas which enhanced the adsorption properties. Moreover, the formed heterojunction systems boost the visible light responsive and the separation of photo-induced electrons, allowing excellent degradation of PFOA. Besides the same response to spectrum below 420 nm as C 3 N 4 , ZIF67@C 3 N 4 holds a certain light absorption capacity between 500 and 600 nm, proving that ZIF67@C 3 N 4 -X has better light utilization capacity than ZIF67 and C 3 N 4 . With the increase of MIL-100(Fe) addition, the red-shift becomes significant. Through the preliminary photocatalytic tests using methylene blue as a representative organic pollutant, the results showed that ZIF67@C 3 N 4 -24.4% and MIL-100(Fe)@C 3 N 4 -70% are the most effective. When ZIF67@C 3 N 4 -24.4% and MIL-100(Fe)@C 3 N 4 -70% were applied comparatively towards the photocatalytic oxidation of PFOA, the results showed that the removal rates reached 79.2% and 60.5%, respectively, which is much higher than bare C 3 N 4 . The quenching tests indicated that photo-induced h + played a major role in the photocatalytic degradation of PFOA by ZIF67@C 3 N 4 -24.4%, while O 2 - and h + participated equality towards the PFOA degradation in MIL-100(Fe)@C 3 N 4 -70% system. Besides the photonic effects, it was suggested that the adsorption and electron shuttle effect also played significant role on the excellent removal of PFOA, wherein the adsorption e behavior of catalysts help the accumulation of PFOA nearby the photoactive C 3 N 4 area. In addition, this process promoted further mineralization of generated intermediate products, making the system more sustainable.

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is of increasing concern due to its worldwide application and extremely environmental persistence. Herein, we demonstrated the electrochemical degradation of PFOA with high efficiency using the Ti3+ self-doping TiO2 nanotube arrays (Ti3+/TiO2-NTA) anode. The fabricated Ti3+/TiO2-NTA anode exhibited vertically aligned uniform nanotubes structure, and was demonstrated good performance on the electrochemical degradation of PFOA in water. The degradation rate, total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate and defluorination rate of PFOA reached 98.1 %, 93.3 % and 74.8 %, respectively, after electrolysis for 90 min at low current density of 2 mA cm-2. The energy consumption (7.6 Wh L-1) of this electrochemical oxidation system using Ti3+/TiO2-NTA anode for PFOA degradation was about 1 order of magnitude lower than using traditional PbO2 anodes. Cathodic polarization could effectively prolong the electrocatalytic activity of the anode by regenerating Ti3+ sites. PFOA molecular was underwent a rapidly mineralization to CO2 and F-, with only low concentration of short-chain perflfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) intermediates identified. A possible electrochemical degradation mechanism of PFOA was proposed, in which the initial direct electron transfer (DET) on the anode to yield PFOA free radicals (C7F15COO•) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) oxidation were greatly enhanced. This presented study provides a novel approach for the purification of the recalcitrant PFOA from wastewaters.

Abstract:The recalcitrant nature of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) urge scientists to discover solutions to permanently remove PFAS contaminations from water with less energy in contrast to incineration. In this presentation, we will introduce a duo-functional tri-metallic-oxide ( f -TMO) hybrid photocatalyst that was synthesized via a facile process, which displayed both high adsorption capacity and high defluorination rate of a series of PFAS including PFOA, PFOS, PFHpA, PFHxA and PFBA due to the generated holes/electrons (h + /e - ) and multi-radicals such as O 2 •- and SO 4 •- (Samuel, Shang, Niu. Chemosphere , 293 (2022) 133568). The Langmuir adsorption capacities up to 827.84 and 714.46 mg g -1 along with the adsorption efficiency of 99.8% and 99.4% for PFOS and PFOA were respectively achieved. A defluorination ratio of as high as 74.8% with PFOA and a ratio up to 67.6% with PFOS were respectively received. Over 98% PFOA molecules were degraded within as fast as 15 min under initial concentrations ranging from 1 ppb to 1000 ppb, which demonstrates an excellent degradation kinetics. After degradation, the PFOA residuals were as low as 10 ng L -1 in industrial wastewater with an initial concentration of 1 ppb. Moreover, as high as 95.5% degradation efficiency of PFOS was obtained within 300 min. The high physical adsorption capacity and high defluorination rate make this f -TMO catalyst promising applications in removing PFAS from a broad range of water sources. Abstract:Heterogeneous photocatalysis has gained substantial research interest in treating per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)-contaminated water. However, sluggish degradation kinetics and low defluorination efficiency compromise their practical applications. Here, we report a superior photocatalyst, defected Bi 3 O(OH)(PO 4 ) 2 , which could effectively degrade typical PFAS, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), with high defluorination efficiency. The UV light irradiation could in situ generate oxygen vacancies on Bi 3 O(OH)(PO 4 ) 2 through oxidation of the lattice hydroxyls, which further promotes the formation of Lewis acidic coordinately unsaturated bismuth sites. Then, the Lewis acidic sites couple with the proximal surface hydroxyls to constitute the surface frustrated Lewis pairs (SFLPs). With the in-depth spectroscopic analysis, we revealed that the photo-induced SFLPs act as collection centers to effectively adsorb PFOA and endow accessible pathways to transfer photogenerated holes to PFOA rapidly. Consequently, activation of the terminal carboxyl, a rate-limiting step for PFOA decomposition, could be easily achieved over the defected Bi 3 O(OH)(PO 4 ) 2 photocatalyst. These results suggest that SFLPs exhibit great potential in developing highly efficient photocatalysts to degrade persistent organic pollutants.
