Abstract:Antibiotic residues from animal manure cause soil pollution and can pose a threat to soil animals. In this study, the toxicological effects of fluoroquinolone antibiotics on Enchytraeus crypticus, including defence response, gut microbiome, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), were studied. The cytochrome P450 enzyme activity and reactive oxygen species levels increased, activating the defense response. The superoxide dismutase and glutathione S-transferase activity, and the expression of immune defense molecules such as coelomic cytolytic factor, lysozyme, bactericidal protein fetidins and lysenin changed. Furthermore, the diversity of the gut microbiome decreased, and the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes decreased significantly at the phylum level but increased in pathogenic and antibiotic-secreting bacteria (Rhodococcus and Streptomyces) at the genus level. However, the soil microbiome was not significantly different from that of the control group. The relative abundance of ARGs in the gut and soil microbiome significantly increased with enrofloxacin concentration, and the fluoroquinolone ARGs were significantly increased in both the soil (20.85-fold, p < 0.001) and gut (11.72-fold, p < 0.001) microbiomes. Subtypes of ARGs showed a positive correlation with Rhodococcus, which might increase the risk of disease transmission and the probability of drug-resistant pathogens. Furthermore, mobile genetic elements significantly promote the spread of ARGs.

Abstract:Enrofloxacin (ENR) and sulfachloropyridazine combined with trimethoprim (TMP) were commonly used in poultries to treat bacterial infections. In this study, the pharmacokinetics of these antibiotics in four tissues of Taihe black-boned silky fowls was studied. The results showed that these drugs were absorbed and distributed rapidly, with the highest concentration showing in skin. Meanwhile, ENR and its metabolite ciprofloxacin (CIP) and TMP were depleted slowly, particularly in skin with the elimination half-lives being 37.1, 36.9, and 72.7 days, respectively. It may be attributed to the abundance of melanin in skin. The dietary risk assessment suggested that the long-term dietary intakes of ENR, CIP, and TMP showed a considerable threat to human health. Based on the experiment, the withdrawal times of 284 days for ENR + CIP and 159 days for TMP were acquired, which showed that these drugs are not appropriate for the application in Taihe black-boned silky fowls.
Comparative Study of the Toxicity Mechanisms of Quinolone Antibiotics on Soybean Seedlings: Insights from Molecular Docking and Transcriptomic Analysis.

Abstract:The ecological effects of quinolone antibiotics (QNs) on non-target organisms have received widespread attention. The toxicological mechanisms of three common QNs, that is, enrofloxacin, levofloxacin, and ciprofloxacin, on soybean seedlings were investigated in this study. Enrofloxacin and levofloxacin caused significant growth inhibition, ultra structural alterations, photosynthetic suppression, and stimulation of the antioxidant system, with levofloxacin exhibiting the strongest toxic effects. Ciprofloxacin (<1 mg & BULL;L-1) did not have a significant effect on the soybean seedlings. As the concentrations of enrofloxacin and levofloxacin increased, antioxidant enzyme activities, malondialdehyde content, and hydrogen peroxide levels also increased. Meanwhile, the chlorophyll content and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters decreased, indicating that the plants underwent oxidative stress and photosynthesis was suppressed. The cellular ultrastructure was also disrupted, which was manifested by swollen chloroplasts, increased starch granules, disintegration of plastoglobules, and mitochondrial degradation. The molecular docking results suggested that the QNs have an affinity for soybean target protein receptors (4TOP, 2IUJ, and 1FHF), with levofloxacin having the highest binding energy (-4.97, -3.08, -3.8, respectively). Transcriptomic analysis has shown that genes were upregulated under the enrofloxacin and levofloxacin treatments were mainly involved in ribosome metabolism and processes to synthesize oxidative stress-related proteins. Downregulated genes in the levofloxacin treatment were primarily enriched in photosynthesis-related pathways, indicating that levofloxacin significantly inhibited gene expression for photosynthesis. Genes expression level by quantitative real-time PCR analysis was consistent with the transcriptomic results. This study confirmed the toxic effect of QNs on soybean seedlings, and provided new insights into the environmental risks of antibiotics.
Reproductive toxicity of enrofloxacin in Caenorhabditis elegans involves oxidative stress-induced cell apoptosis

Abstract:Fluoroquinolone antibiotics (FQs) that persist and bioaccumulate in the environment have aroused people's great concern. Here, we studied the adverse effects of FQs in soil animals of Caenorhabditis elegans via food-chronically exposure. The result shows C. elegans exposed to FQs exhibited reproductive toxicity with small-brood size and low-egg hatchability. To study the underlying mechanism, we conduct a deep investigation of enrofloxacin (ENR), one of the most frequently detected FQs, on nematodes which is one of commonly used animal indicator of soil sustainability. The concentration-effect curves simulated by the Hill model showed that the half effect concentrations (EC50) of ENR were (494.3 ± 272.9) μmol/kg and (107.4 ± 30.9) μmol/kg for the brood size and the hatchability, respectively. Differential gene expression between the control and the ENR-exposure group enriched with the oxidative stress and cell apoptosis pathways. The results together with the enzyme activity in oxidative stress and the cell corpses suggested that ENR-induced reproductive toxicity was related to germ cell apoptosis under oxidative stress. The risk quotients of some soil and livestock samples were calculated based on the threshold value of EC10 for the egg hatchability (2.65 μmol/kg). The results indicated that there was possible reproductive toxicity on the nematodes in certain agricultural soils for the FQs. This study suggested that chronic exposure to FQs at certain levels in environment would induce reproductive toxicity to the nematodes and might reduce the soil sustainability, alarming the environment risks of antibiotics abuse.

Abstract:Although internationally recognized as the “highest priority critically important antimicrobials,” fluoroquinolones are extensively used in both human and veterinary medicine. Poor metabolism and recalcitrance of fluoroquinolones have led to their worldwide presence in municipal wastewaters as well as in manure and, consequently, in several environmental compartments. Being one of the most widely used fluoroquinolones in human medicine and, aside from that, the main metabolite of the veterinary drug enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin is the most frequently detected fluoroquinolone in effluents of European wastewater treatment plants. Due to serious global concerns about the increasing emergence of bacterial (multi)resistances toward the highly efficient fluoroquinolones, special attention has been paid to their environmental degradation by various microorganisms. This review summarizes research on microbial transformation and degradation of fluoroquinolones with special emphasis on ciprofloxacin, presents an overview of the main ciprofloxacin biotransformation products, and takes a closer look at their biological relevance. Furthermore, own data, experiences, and publications gathered from our recent research in the field are acknowledged.

Abstract:Enrofloxacin (ENR) is a kind of widespread hazardous pollutant on aquatic ecosystems and causes toxic effects, such as disorders of metabolism, on aquatic animals. However, its potential mechanisms at an environmental concentration on metabolic disorders of aquatic organisms remain unclear. Herin, we found that hepatic lipotoxicity was induced by ENR exposure, which led to ENR accumulation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial fragmentation, and fatty acid transfer blockage from lipid droplets into fragmented mitochondria. ENR-induced lipotoxicity and mitochondrial β-oxidation down-regulation were mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, dynamin-like protein 1 (DRP1) mediated ENR-induced mitochondrial fragmentation and changes of lipid metabolism. Mechanistically, ENR induced increment of DRP1 mitochondrial localization via dephosphorylating DRP1 at S627 and promoted its interaction with mitochondrial fission factor (MFF), leading to mitochondria fragmentation. For the first time, our study provides an innovative mechanistic link between hepatic lipotoxicity and mitochondrial fragmentation under ENR exposure, and thus identifies previously unknown mechanisms for the direct relationship between environmental ENR concentration and lipotoxicity in aquatic animals. Our study provides innovative insights for toxicological mechanisms and environmental risk assessments of antibiotics in aquatic environment.

Abstract:Huntingtin-associated protein-1 (HAP1) binds more tightly to mutant huntingtin, but its function and distribution in neurites are not clear. Using PC12 cells and cultured hippocampal neurons, we found that two HAP1 isoforms, HAP1-A and HAP1-B, have different subcellular localizations. While most HAP1-B is diffusely distributed within the cytoplasm, HAP1-A is enriched in the growth cones and neuritic puncta of developing neurons. In mature neurons and adult brain neurons, however, HAP1-A is concentrated in axon terminals and associated with synaptic vesicles. Transfection of HAP1-A in PC12 cells significantly promotes neurite extension, with HAP1-A distributed in the distal regions of the growing neurites. Cotransfection of mutant huntingtin with HAP1-A in PC12 cells results in the accumulation of HAP1-A on huntingtin aggregates and the inhibition of neurite promotion by HAP1-A. This study suggests that HAP1-A has a function in neuritic development and synaptic function and that mutant huntingtin may alter this function.

Abstract:Enrofloxacin (ENR) is a widely used fluoroquinolone antibiotic that is frequently detected in the environment. Our study assessed the impact of short-term ENR exposure on the intestinal and liver health of marine medaka ( Oryzias melastigma ) using gut metagenomic shotgun sequencing and liver metabolomics. We found that ENR exposure resulted in imbalances of Vibrio and Flavobacteria and enrichments of multiple antibiotic resistance genes. Additionally, we found a potential link between the host's response to ENR exposure and the intestinal microbiota disorder. Liver metabolites, including phosphatidylcholine, lysophosphatidylcholine, taurocholic acid, and cholic acid, in addition to several metabolic pathways in the liver that are closely linked to the imbalance of intestinal flora were severely maladjusted. These findings suggest that ENR exposure has the potential to negatively affect the gut–liver axis as the primary toxicological mechanism. Our findings provide evidence regarding the negative physiological impacts of antibiotics on marine fish.

Ecotoxicological Effect of Enrofloxacin on Spirulina Platensis and the Corresponding Detoxification Mechanism

Abstract:Enrofloxacin is a widely used antibiotic targeting DNA gyrase and has become the commonly detected micropollutant in aquatic environments. Thus, the potential toxicity of enrofloxacin to Spirulina platensis which is a kind of prokaryote similar to Gram-negative bacteria has been hypothesized. However, little is known about the toxicity and degradation mechanism of enrofloxacin during the growth process of Spirulina platensis. Herein, the biomass accumulation of Spirulina platensis was stimulated to 115% of the control group by 0.1 mg L-1 enrofloxacin (10th day), which could be removed probably through the metabolism. Further increasing the enrofloxacin level to 5.0 mg L-1 almost inhibited the growth and remediation ability of Spirulina platensis for 35 days. Environmental stress also caused the variations of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a and carotenoids) and primary biocomponents (proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates), reflecting the adaptation of Spirulina platensis for handling the negative effects of enrofloxacin. The detoxification mechanism was studied by identifying the degradation products of enrofloxacin, suggesting the occurrence of dealkylation and oxidation reactions primarily at the piperazine group. The decreased antimicrobial activity was confirmed by the reduced binding affinity of degradation products with enzymes. The obtained results could help us understand the role of enrofloxacin in the growth of Spirulina platensis, thus providing great support for employing Spirulina platensis in risk assessment and hazard reduction.
Multi-omics analyses reveal molecular mechanisms for the antagonistic toxicity of carbon nanotubes and ciprofloxacin to Escherichia coli

Abstract:With the increasing production and application, engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) are being discharged into the environment, where they can interact with co-existing contaminants, causing complicated joint toxicity to organisms that needs to be studied. The case study of ENMs-contaminant joint toxicity and the understanding of relative mechanisms are very insufficient, particularly the mechanisms of molecular interactions and governing processes. Herein, a typical ENMs, carbon nanotubes (CNTs, 0-60 mg/L), and a common antibiotic, ciprofloxacin (CIP, 0-900 mg/L), were selected as the analytes. Their joint toxicity to a model microbe Escherichia coli was specifically investigated via biochemical, transcriptomics, and metabolomics approaches. The result revealed an antagonistic effect on growth inhibition between CNTs and CIP. Mitigations in cell membrane disruption and oxidative stress were involved in the antagonistic action. CIP (48.8-244 mg/L) decreased the bioaccumulation of CNTs (7.2 mg/L) via reducing cell-surface hydrophobicity and hindering the bio-nano interaction, which could attenuate the toxicity of CNTs to bacteria. CNTs (7.2 and 14.4 mg/L) alleviated the disturbance of CIP (122 and 244 mg/L) to gene expressions especially related to nitrogen compound metabolism, oxidoreductase activity, and iron-sulfur protein maturation, probably through relieving the CIP-induced inhibition of DNA gyrase activity. Further, CNTs (7.2 and 14.4 mg/L) offset the impact of CIP (122 and 244 mg/L) on bacterial metabolome via the regulation of biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids and metabolisms of some amino acids and glutathione. The findings shed new light on the molecular mechanisms by which ENMs present joint effect on contaminant toxicity, and provide important information for risk assessments of CNTs and fluoroquinolones in the environment.
Integrative multi-omics analysis reveals the underlying toxicological mechanisms of enrofloxacin on the growth of wheat seedling roots

Abstract:The continuous release of antibiotics into agroecosystems has raised concerns about the potential negative effects of antibiotic residues on crops. In this study, the toxicological effects of enrofloxacin (ENR) on wheat seedlings were analyzed using a combination of morpho-physiological, transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic approaches. ENR inhibited the growth of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) roots and induced oxidative stress. In particular, ENR downregulated the oxidative phosphorylation pathway, while it enhanced glycolysis and the tricarboxylic acid cycle, thereby regulating the balance of intracellular energy metabolism. In addition, sustained exposure to excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) resulted in an increase in reduced glutathione (GSH), a slight decrease in ascorbic acid (AsA), and a significant decrease in the ratio of GSH to oxidized glutathione (GSSG), which imbalanced the AsA-GSH cycle. In addition, the resulting increase in abnormal proteins triggered ubiquitin-independent proteasomal degradation pathways. Further, an increase in abscisic acid (ABA) and a decrease in jasmonic acid (JA) and its derivatives alleviated the inhibitory effect of ENR on the growth of wheat roots. In conclusion, direct damage and signaling by ROS, hormonal regulation, a decrease in the GSH to GSSG ratio, and insufficient energy supply were identified as key factors for the significant inhibition of wheat root growth under ENR stress.
Intramuscular therapeutic doses of enrofloxacin affect microbial community structure but not the relative abundance of fluoroquinolones resistance genes in swine manure

Abstract:Livestock manure is a major source of veterinary antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Elucidation of the residual characteristics of ARGs in livestock manure following the administration of veterinary antibiotics is critical to assess their ecotoxicological effects and environmental contamination risks. Here, we investigated the effects of enrofloxacin (ENR), a fluoroquinolone antibiotic commonly used as a therapeutic drug in animal husbandry, on the characteristics of ARGs, mobile genetic elements, and microbial community structure in swine manure following its intramuscular administration for 3 days and a withdrawal period of 10 days. The results revealed the highest concentrations of ENR and ciprofloxacin (CIP) in swine manure at the end of the administration period, ENR concentrations in swine manure in groups L and H were 88.67 ± 45.46 and 219.75 ± 88.05 mg/kg DM, respectively. Approximately 15 fluoroquinolone resistance genes (FRGs) and 48 fluoroquinolone-related multidrug resistance genes (F-MRGs) were detected in swine manure; the relative abundance of the F-MRGs was considerably higher than that of the FRGs. On day 3, the relative abundance of qac A was significantly higher in group H than in group CK, and no significant differences in the relative abundance of other FRGs, F-MRGs, or MGEs were observed between the three groups on day 3 and day 13. The microbial community structure in swine manure was significantly altered on day 3, and the altered community structure was restored on day 13. The FRGs and F-MRGs with the highest relative abundance were qac A and ade F, respectively, and Clostridium and Lactobacillus were the dominant bacterial genera carrying these genes in swine manure. In summary, a single treatment of intramuscular ENR transiently increased antibiotic concentrations and altered the microbial community structure in swine manure; however, this treatment did not significantly affect the abundance of FRGs and F-MRGs.

Abstract:Antibiotics can affect the photosynthetic system of Microcystis, potentially altering the balance of carbon and nitrogen, which may influence the synthesis of different microcystin (MC) congeners. However, the regulatory mechanisms by which antibiotics affect the synthesis of various MC congeners in Microcystis remain unknown. In this study, the effects of ciprofloxacin (CIP) on the growth, carbon and nitrogen balance, amino acid composition, mcyB gene expression, and production of different MC congeners were investigated in two toxin-producing strains of Microcystis aeruginosa. The results show that CIP exposure significantly inhibited the growth of both strains, achieving an inhibition rate of 71.75% in FACHB-315 and 41.13% in FACHB-915 at 8 μg/L CIP by the end of the cultivation. The intracellular C:N ratio in FACHB-315 increased by 51.47%, while no significant change was observed in FACHB-915. The levels of leucine, tyrosine, and arginine, as identified and quantified by UPLC-MS/MS, were significantly altered at higher CIP concentrations, leading to a reduction in leucine percentage and a notable increase in tyrosine in both strains, which contributed to a reduction in MC-LR proportion and an increase in MC-RR and MC-YR proportion. Additionally, the expression of the mcyB gene was upregulated by as much as 5.57 times, indicating that antibiotic stress could enhance MC synthesis at the genetic level, contributing to the increased toxicity of cyanobacteria. These findings emphasize the significant role of CIP in the biochemical processes of M. aeruginosa, particularly in MC synthesis and composition, providing valuable insights into the ecological risks posed by antibiotics and harmful cyanobacteria.

Transcriptomics Analysis of the Toxicological Impact of Enrofloxacin in an Aquatic Environment on the Chinese Mitten Crab (eriocheir Sinensis).

Abstract:Enrofloxacin is an important antimicrobial drug that is widely used in aquaculture. Enrofloxacin residues can have negative effects on aquatic environments and animals. The toxicological effects of different concentrations of enrofloxacin residues in cultured water on Chinese mitten crabs (Eriocheir sinensis) were compared. A histological analysis of the E. sinensis hepatopancreas demonstrated that the hepatopancreas was damaged by the different enrofloxacin residue concentrations. The hepatopancreas transcriptome results revealed that 1245 genes were upregulated and that 1298 genes were downregulated in the low-concentration enrofloxacin residue group. In the high-concentration enrofloxacin residue group, 380 genes were upregulated, and 529 genes were downregulated. The enrofloxacin residues led to differentially expressed genes related to the immune system and metabolic processes in the hepatopancreas of the Chinese mitten crab, such as the genes for alkaline phosphatase, NF-kappa B inhibitor alpha, alpha-amylase, and beta-galactosidase-like. The gene ontology terms "biological process" and "molecular function" were enriched in the carboxylic acid metabolic process, DNA replication, the synthesis of RNA primers, the transmembrane transporter activity, the hydrolase activity, and the oxidoreductase activity. A Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analysis determined that the immune and metabolic signal transduction pathways were significantly enriched. Furthermore, the nonspecific immune enzyme (alkaline phosphatase) and the metabolic enzyme system played a role in the enrofloxacin metabolism in the E. sinensis hepatopancreas. These findings helped us to further understand the basis of the toxicological effects of enrofloxacin residues on river crabs and provided valuable information for the better utilization of enrofloxacin in aquatic water environments.
Effects of antibiotics on immunity and apoptosis on grass carp liver and hepatocytes

Abstract:Antibiotics are used to treat illnesses in animals and humans worldwide. Yet, many antibiotics and other secondary metabolites can contaminate the water supply, creating a substantial risk to human health. A comprehensive investigation is currently focusing on the systematic effects of dietary antibiotics on fish liver, particularly on their impacts on oxidative stress, transcriptome profiles, toxicity, and apoptosis. In the present study, healthy grass carp were treated orally with 10 mg/kg enrofloxacin or florfenicol for 14 days. The enzyme activity outcomes reflected that the administration of enrofloxacin or florfenicol could significantly induce oxidative stress by decreasing CAT, SOD and GPx and increasing MDA. In addition, KEGG analysis showed that both antibiotics activated the PPAR signal pathway. The expression levels of the six genes, namely FABP6, APOA1, CYP27A1, ACSL1, CPT1A, and ANGPTL4, in the PPAR signal pathway were determined to further clarify the transcriptomic data. Enrofloxacin induced apoptosis in grass carp liver tissue, while hepatocytes from grass carp treated with enrofloxacin and florfenicol activated cytotoxicity and apoptosis. The present study suggests that antibiotics can induce antioxidant stress, impair the immune system, and attenuate the PPAR signal pathway in the grass carp liver, thus being harmful to grass carp as a dietary supplement, mainly within the aquaculture industry.

Abstract:Cytochrome P450 enzyme system is a clan of heme oxidases that is substantial in oxidative metabolism and activation of drugs in the liver and extrahepatic sites of the body. Compounds that are metabolized through CYP450 can fabricate reactive intermediates that can deplete oxygen at molecular level and yield reactive oxygen species (ROS). Such detrimental events taking place in the body are defied and compensated by body cells via diverse defense mechanisms. Defensive mechanisms may include the induction of free radical removers, for instance, some vitamins (C and E), bilirubin, thiols, some lipophilic scavengers such as ubiquinol and enzymes, e.g., glutathione peroxidases, superoxide dismutase, or catalases to sophisticate and embellish DNA repair mechanisms. In the circumstances, when the defense is inadequate to combat these free radicals, ROS hold the charge and oxidative stress is an obvious incident to happen. The resulting oxidative stress then bows the seeds of idiosyncratic drug toxicity by damaging the cells, proteins, and DNA. Consequently, by the study of CYP-controlled modified drug metabolism and resulting in oxidative stress, plenty of malfunctions can be prevented. Ample studies have intensified the contribution of hepatic metabolism, directing toward the complex diseases. The motive of this review is to highlight the oxidative stress due to ROS that are produced during CYP-induced drug metabolism and detoxification with antioxidant therapy. The writing will also elaborate on the unexplored aspects of this field that are yet to be considered.

Abstract:Enrofloxacin is a compound that originates from a group of fluoroquinolones that is widely used in veterinary medicine as an antibacterial agent (this antibiotic is not approved for use as a drug in humans). It reveals strong antibiotic activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, mainly due to the inhibition of bacterial gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymatic actions. The high efficacy of this molecule has been demonstrated in the treatment of various animals on farms and other locations. However, the use of enrofloxacin causes severe adverse effects, including skeletal, reproductive, immune, and digestive disorders. In this review article, we present in detail and discuss the advantageous and disadvantageous properties of enrofloxacin, showing the benefits and risks of the use of this compound in veterinary medicine. Animal health and the environmental effects of this stable antibiotic (with half-life as long as 3–9 years in various natural environments) are analyzed, as are the interesting properties of this molecule that are expressed when present in complexes with metals. Recommendations for further research on enrofloxacin are also proposed.

Abstract:With the increasing use of antibiotics, their ecological impacts have received widespread attention. However, research on the toxicity of quinolone antibiotics is still limited, especially regarding the oxidative stress and phyllosphere of plants. In this study, the toxic effects of enrofloxacin, norfloxacin, and levofloxacin on Arabidopsis thaliana and their underlying mechanisms were investigated. The toxicity of the three quinolone antibiotics decreased in the following order: enrofloxacin > norfloxacin > levofloxacin. Physiological cellular changes, such as plasmolysis and chloroplast swelling, were observed using electron microscopy. Photosynthetic efficiency was inhibited with a decline in the effective photochemical quantum yield of photosystem II (Y(II)) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), indicating that quinolone antibiotics might reduce light energy conversion efficiency and excess light energy dissipation. Oxidative stress occurred in A. thaliana after quinolone antibiotic treatment, with an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and malondialdehyde (MDA) content. High ROS levels stimulated the over-expression of superoxide-responsive genes for self-protection. Structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis showed that photosynthesis inhibition and cellular damage caused by oxidative stress were critical factors for growth inhibition, suggesting that the antioxidant response activated by ROS might be a potential mechanism. Furthermore, the diversity of the phyllospheric microbial communities decreased after enrofloxacin exposure. Additionally, specific microbes were preferentially recruited to the phyllosphere because of the higher ROS levels.

Abstract:Fluoroquinolone antibiotics are widely used in human and veterinary medicine and are ubiquitous in the environment worldwide. This paper recapitulates the occurrence, fate, and ecotoxicity of fluoroquinolone antibiotics in various environmental media. The toxicity effect is reviewed based on in vitro and in vivo experiments referring to many organisms, such as microorganisms, cells, higher plants, and land and aquatic animals. Furthermore, a comparison of the various toxicology mechanisms of fluoroquinolone antibiotic residues on environmental organisms is made. This study identifies gaps in the investigation of the toxic effects of fluoroquinolone antibiotics and mixtures of multiple fluoroquinolone antibiotics on target and nontarget organisms. The study of the process of natural transformation toward drug-resistant bacteria is also recognized as a knowledge gap. This review also details the combined toxicity effect of fluoroquinolone antibiotics and other chemicals on organisms and the adsorption capacity in various environmental matrices, and the scarcity of data on the ecological toxicology evaluation system of fluoroquinolone antibiotics is identified. The present study entails a critical review of the literature providing guidelines for the government to control the discharge of pollutants into the environment and formulate policy coordination. Future study work should focus on developing a standardized research methodology for fluoroquinolone antibiotics to guide enterprises in the design and production of drugs with high environmental biocompatibility.
