Abstract:PURPOSE To investigate the status of oral health knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) and related influencing factors among the pregnant women in a certain hospital in Shanghai municipality. METHODS A questionnaire survey was conducted among 340 pregnant women in a hospital in Shanghai municipality from January 2009 to June 2010.Data of the survey was analyzed by SPSS 13.0 software package, including frequency description, correlation analysis, multivariate linear regression analysis, F analysis and Student's t test. RESULTS Most pregnant women had a positive attitude towards oral health. However, only 44.62% of the subjects had adequate knowledge on oral health and correct oral health caring behavior. The ratio of the subjects who had oral examination before getting pregnant was 29.85%, while 39.08% of the pregnant women didn't plan to brush teeth or just gargle after parturition. A positive correlation was found among knowledge level, attitude and practice of oral health. The related coefficient between knowledge and attitude, knowledge and practice ,attitude and practice was 0.255, 0.328 and 0.214 (P<0.05), respectively.The KAP level of oral health was mainly affected by the level of education and occupation of the subjects, and occupation of their mates, with partial correlation coefficient of 1.109, 0.975 and 0.453(P<0.05), respectively. The main source of the pregnant women getting oral health knowledge successively was mass media, guidance of medical staff and experience of their relatives and friends. CONCLUSIONS The pregnant women are deficient in oral health knowledge and have incorrect oral health caring behavior. Guidance on oral health knowledge and oral health caring behavior should be implemented.

Abstract:We present a search for a new heavy particle X produced in association with a top quark, pp[over ¯]→t(X→t[over ¯]q) or pp[over ¯]→t[over ¯](X[over ¯]→tq[over ¯]), where q stands for up quarks and down quarks. Such a particle may explain the recent anomalous measurements of top-quark forward-backward asymmetry. If the light-flavor quark (q) is reconstructed as a jet (j), this gives a t[over ¯]+j or t+j resonance in tt[over ¯]+jet events, a previously unexplored experimental signature. In a sample of events with exactly one lepton, missing transverse momentum and at least five jets, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.7 fb(-1) collected by the CDF II detector, we find the data to be consistent with the standard model. We set cross-section upper limits on the production (pp[over ¯]→Xt or X[over ¯]t[over ¯]) at 95% confidence level from 0.61 pb to 0.02 pb for X masses ranging from 200 GeV/c(2) to 800 GeV/c(2), respectively.

Abstract:Objective: To conduct a bibliographic literature review on current good practices in oral health during the first 1000 days of life, encompassing the gestation period and the initial two years of the child. Materials and methods: A scientific literature review was conducted in February and March 2022, utilizing the Pubmed and Scopus databases. The inclusion criteria encompassed original articles and systematic reviews (with or without meta-analysis) published between 2016 and 2022. Search strategies incorporating English keywords derived from MeSH were employed. Additionally, the grey literature was reviewed to define some key concepts. Results: 72 scientific articles, and four references from the grey literature (one clinical practice guide and three reports) were selected. The identified themes were categorized as follows: good oral hygiene practices, good feeding practices for pregnant women and infants, parafunctional habits, and dental visits. Based on the findings, the key recommendations for promoting good oral health practices during this crucial period include the use of fluoride toothpaste for oral hygiene once teeth erupt, avoidance of free sugar consumption, encouragement of breastfeeding over bottle-feeding, and early dental visits before birth. Conclusion: Good oral health practices during the first 1000 days of life significantly impact the child’s oral and general health, necessitating preventive measures starting from gestation, with a focus on oral hygiene and nutrition. The collaborative efforts of a multidisciplinary healthcare team during pregnancy and the initial two years of life are vital for enhancing both oral and general health outcomes for the population.

Abstract:Purpose: To examine the socioeconomic and behavioural risk factors for periodontal disease in women of childbearing age and evaluate the extent of public awareness of the association between oral health and pregnancy in China.Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional data from 832 women (including 188 pregnant women) from Yuyao, Zhejiang Province were collected using a structured questionnaire. Demographic data were used to measure the participants' socioeconomic status. The questionnaire assessed knowledge and behaviours related to personal oral hygiene and utilisation of dental care services. Data were divided into pregnant and non-pregnant groups for multivariate logistic regression analysis.Results: In total, 88.3% pregnant women and 74.2% non-pregnant women reported periodontal symptoms. Abnormal body mass index (BMI <= 18.5, odds ratio, OR = 0.76, 95% CI 0.27-0.97, P = 0.024; BMI >= 23.9, OR = 1.83, 95% CI 1.12-3.35, P = 0.035) was significantly associated with self-reported periodontal disease. Minimal mental stress (OR = 0.56, 95% CI 0.43-0.94, P = 0.028), high annual household income (OR = 0.69, 95% CI 0.17-0.82, P = 0.008), advanced oral hygiene aids (OR = 0.33, 95% CI 0.18-0.49, P < 0.001) and knowledge of the link between pregnancy and periodontal disease (OR = 0.57, 95% CI 0.33-0.96, P = 0.016) were associated with decreased incidence of self-reported periodontal disease.Conclusions: A low socioeconomic background was correlated with the high incidence of self-reported periodontal disease among women of childbearing age in China. Education about primary oral health and equitable distribution of dental services might be expected to improve oral health in this specific population.

Abstract:Background: Early childhood caries is a virulent form of dental caries that can destroy the primary dentition of infants and preschool children. ECC is a preventable disease and prevention should begin in pre and perinatal. Mothers with poor oral health may be at greater risk of infecting their children. Biologically, the mother is the primary source of Streptococci and young children are dependent on their mother for oral hygiene. Aim: So, it’s essential to explore pregnant women and nursing mothers' knowledge, attitude, and practices as they affect the dental care children receive. Methodology: A survey was presented which was designed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practices of pregnant women regarding infant’s oral health. A survey was conducted in and around Vellore at a government and private maternity hospital among pregnant women and new mothers. A self-administered questionnaire consisting of a total of 41 questions concerning basic information on proper infant oral hygiene procedures was given. A statistical analysis was performed. Results: A greater percentage of women were unaware of the importance of their oral hygiene, infant feeding practices and oral hygiene procedures. Conclusion: Based on these results there is a need for education for mothers and would-be mothers.

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the level of knowledge of prenatal health professionals concerning the relationship between periodontal diseases and pregnancy complications, as well as their professional implications in the oral health field. Materials and methods: A questionnaire was distributed to obstetricians/gynecologists, interns specialised in obstetrics/gynecology, midwives, and student midwives at Loire Atlantique and Vendée hospitals (France). The questionnaire included 5 sociodemographic questions and 14 questions regarding the level of knowledge about the relationship between periodontal diseases and pregnancy complications as well as the professionals' level of involvement in oral health care. Results: Twenty-three obstetricians/gynecologists and 55 midwives responded to the questionnaire. Preterm delivery and chorioamnionitis were the most frequently mentioned complications of pregnancy, whereas the risk of pre-eclampsia was rarely mentioned. Half of the professionals said they were aware of the oral manifestations of pregnancy. Gingivitis and an increased risk of caries were the most frequently mentioned items, whereas epulis was the least frequently mentioned item. The level of involvement of prenatal care practitioners in oral health care was limited due to a lack of competence and time. Nevertheless, 64% of the participants discussed the risks of poor oral hygiene with their patients. Conclusion: There is good knowledge among French gynecologists/obstetricians and midwives regarding the oral manifestations of pregnancy. However, there is still a lack of knowledge concerning the links between periodontal diseases and pregnancy complications. The involvement and behaviour of pregnancy professionals in the oral health field is inadequate. The present survey highlights the need to improve the initial and continuing education of obstetricians and midwives on this topic.

Abstract:The ultrastructural changes in hepatocytes of rats subjected to selective biliary obstruction (SBO), wherein the biliary system draining approximately two‐thirds of the liver is obstructed, were evaluated by quantitative electron microscopy or stereology. The remaining unobstructed portion of the organ compensates for this loss of bile secretion by functioning in a hyper‐secretory mode. This animal model permits the comparison of hepatocellular fine structure associated with the conditions of nonsecretion and hypersecre‐tion of bile with that found in normal secreting sham‐operated rats. Since recent evidence suggests the presence of lobular gradients in hepatic structure and function, both centrolobular and periportal hepatocytes were examined. The low incidence of Golgi membrane profiles in high magnification electron micrographs results in a low confidence level of sampling and, thus, necessitates the application of a novel parameter for estimating the amount of Golgi complex, i.e., the Golgi‐rich area.

Abstract:Background: Rural, low-income pregnant women and their children are at high risk for poor oral health and have low utilization rates of dental care. The Baby Smiles study was designed to increase low-income pregnant women's utilization of dental care, increase young children's dental care utilization, and improve home oral health care practices. Methods/design: Baby Smiles was a five-year, four-site randomized intervention trial with a 2 × 2 factorial design. Four hundred participants were randomly assigned to one of four treatment arms in which they received either brief Motivational Interviewing (MI) or health education (HE) delivered during pregnancy and after the baby was born. In the prenatal study phase, the interventions were designed to encourage dental utilization during pregnancy. After childbirth, the focus was to utilize dental care for the infant by age one. The two primary outcome measures were dental utilization during pregnancy or up to two months postpartum for the mother, and preventive dental utilization by 18 months of age for the child. Medicaid claims data will be used to assess the primary outcomes. Questionnaires were administered at enrollment and 3, 9 and 18 months postpartum (study end) to assess mediating and moderating factors. Discussion: This trial can help define the most effective way to provide one-on-one counseling to pregnant women and new mothers regarding visits to the dentist during pregnancy and after the child is born. It supports previous work demonstrating the potential of reducing mother-to-child transmission of Streptococcus mutans and the initiation of dental caries prevention in early childhood. A Survey of Lithuanian Pregnant Women's Knowledge about Periodontal Disease, Its Prevalence and Possible Influence on Pregnancy Outcomes

Abstract:Background: This study aimed to subjectively assess the changes in the oral health status of pregnant women, to find out their attitudes and knowledge about possible changes in the oral cavity that occurred during pregnancy, and their influence on the outcomes of pregnancy. Methods: 112 pregnant women who visited the Republican Siauliai Hospital during their pregnancy participated in the study. An anonymous self-administered questionnaire was used to conduct the research, surveying their demographic characteristics, oral health changes and habits during pregnancy, and awareness of possible negative pregnancy outcomes. Results: The study involved 112 pregnant women, with 35 in the first trimester, 28 in the second, and 48 in the third trimester. The findings revealed that pregnant women do not take sufficient care of their oral health: more than half of the respondents did not visit an oral care specialist during pregnancy; 22.3% of women reported brushing their teeth only once a day or less; and 35.7% did not clean interdental surfaces at all. Statistically, significantly more urban women believed there is a relationship between maternal oral health and adverse pregnancy outcomes than women living in rural areas (p = 0.013). While significant oral health changes were not observed in the first trimester, more women in the second and third trimesters reported issues such as bleeding gums, swelling, plaque accumulation, tartar, and caries (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The attitude of women towards oral health during pregnancy and their understanding of the possible risks for unfavorable pregnancy outcomes are insufficient. Notably, oral health issues become more prominent in the second and third trimesters, necessitating appropriate oral care to reduce the incidence of oral and dental diseases during pregnancy. This underscores the importance of educational and preventive public health policies focused on oral care for pregnant women, aimed at increasing awareness and promoting practices that safeguard both maternal and fetal health.

Abstract:To evaluate the knowledge and behaviour of mothers in maintaining their oral health during pregnancy. This study included 167 women in five community primary health centres in Central Jakarta whose last child ranged between 0-59 months. The participants were asked to fill the questionnaire “Knowledge and Behaviour Towards Oral Health during Pregnancy” (KBOHP). This questionnaire assessed the knowledge and behaviour in maintaining oral health during pregnancy. Almost 80% of participants reported that they had government dental health coverage. Only about 16% of participants reported that they visit dentist before pregnancy and only about 32% of the participants reported to have oral health problems during pregnancy. Although they have oral health problems, only 18% of them visited the dentists during pregnancy. Only 33% of the participants knew that the periodontal problems can affect pregnancy outcome, and 54.5% of participants had never heard of a possible connection between oral health and pregnancy. About 74% of participants reported that they never had specific oral health care instruction during pregnancy. Participants who received oral health instruction from their health providers also tend to have dental visit during pregnancy. Knowledge and behaviour towards oral health during pregnancy in this population was still low. A program that is developed to improve knowledge and behaviour in maintaining oral health during pregnancy is needed.

Abstract:Pregnancy can affect the mother’s oral health, increasing their susceptibility to oral diseases that have been associated with harmful effects on the newborn. Despite the severity of oral diseases during pregnancy, the demand for dental care during the gestational period is low, which may improve with the participation of midwives in promoting oral health activities. The objectives of this study were: (i) to determine the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of Spanish midwives and midwifery students regarding oral health in pregnant women; and (ii) to identify the barriers faced by these healthcare professionals in addressing oral health promotion during pregnancy. An observational cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted. A total of 128 midwives and/or midwifery students ≥ 18 years old and of both sexes were invited to self-complete a questionnaire between January and April 2020. A total of 85 people participated in the study. Participants had a regular level of knowledge about oral health during pregnancy (overall knowledge score: 6.53), and although they were interested in activities that promote oral healthcare, their oral healthcare practices during pregnancy were limited. As midwives play an important role in promoting health, their training in oral healthcare could help to improve pregnant women’s oral health.

Abstract:Introduction: Conducting dental consultations during pregnancy is considered an important challenge in the context of Maternal and Child Health Policies, as it is surrounded by myths rooted among users and health professionals. In this sense, it is important to identify barriers and facilitators to the search for dental assistance in this period, in order to support strategies that make this practice feasible. Objective: To analyze the search for dental care during high-risk pregnancies, according to sociodemographic, gestational and health characteristics. Methods: Observational study with a cross-sectional design, carried out with high-risk pregnant women referred to a teaching hospital in southern Brazil, from January to May 2018. Data collection was performed using an unprecedented structured form and considered as a dependent variable the search for dental care during pregnancy and as independent variables sociodemographic, gestational and dental characteristics. Pearson's chi-square association test and Fisher's exact test were used. Results: To reach the sample of 190 pregnant women at high gestational risk, a total of 230 women considered valid were approached, counting on the following losses: refusal to participate (n=23), no answer to any question (n=10), duplicity in participant approach (n=7). Advanced maternal age (p=0.000) and history of premature birth in previous pregnancies (p=0.047) were factors associated with a lower frequency of seeking dental care in the current pregnancy. On the other hand, the habit of dental consultation prior to the gestational period (p=0.001), the knowledge about the importance of this monitoring (p=0.050), as well as the safety (p=0.000) in performing dental prenatal care, were related positively to the search during pregnancy. Conclusion: Specific incentive strategies and access to dental prenatal care are necessary to neutralize barriers that may compromise the search for oral health services during pregnancy. For this reason, identifying the facilitators and hinders to the dental service is essential for planning effective actions related to prenatal care.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To explore women's oral health experiences and barriers to dental care and identify potential strategies to improve oral health during pregnancy. METHODS A qualitative descriptive study design was used. Purposively elected antepartum and postpartum women ≥18 years of age from Tasmania, Australia, were recruited using maximum variation sampling. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and all qualitative data were analysed using an inductive thematic approach. RESULTS Fifteen women were interviewed with a mean ± SD age of 32.3 ± 4.5 years. Three key themes were generated from the data that described women's perceived changes in their oral health during pregnancy; barriers to oral health care during and after pregnancy; and perceived strategies to improve access to care. Most women acknowledged the importance of maintaining good oral health but reported a decline in their oral health status during pregnancy. Women also identified several barriers to dental care, including treatment costs, competing maternal priorities, limited oral health knowledge and negative perceptions towards dentistry. The provision of preventative oral health care by ANC providers was also limited. Community awareness, patient education resources and assessment tools could support the promotion of oral health care. Women also perceived that interprofessional collaboration between antenatal and dental providers played a key role in promoting oral health. CONCLUSION This study explored women's varied oral health experiences and perceptions during pregnancy and highlighted critical barriers and enablers to dental care. Policy-level strategies that promote interprofessional collaboration between antenatal and dental providers and expand dental care access are suggested to overcome barriers to oral health for women during pregnancy.

Abstract:Introduction. In healthcare, the need to pay more attention to the achievement of two objectives within the society arises: health promotion and prevention in terms of nutrition, good education, sport, and health education. Scientific evidence shows that adequate health standards must be learned since childhood through the help of parents and appropriate school projects. Parental intervention must be appropriate to support the responsibility of their children's health. In oral health, it has been established for many years that there is a correlation between parental behaviors and lifestyles and children's attitude. The aim of this study is to verify the close relation between behaviors, habits, lifestyles, and the knowledge of parents about their oral health and, consequently, their focus and care for their own children's oral health. Furthermore, the awareness of parents about the importance and use of fluorine was to be determined. Materials and Methods. The study lasted 15 months and was conducted from April 2018 to July 2019: an anonymous 29-question questionnaire was administered to all parents who accompanied their children (aged between 3 and 12 years) going under treatment in the Pediatric Dentistry Unit of the University Hospital Policlinico Umberto I, Rome. Anamnestic data, sociodemographic context (e.g., educational level and occupation), oral health habits, and prevention of parents and children and fluoride knowledge were investigated. The study received ethical approval. 204 questionnaires were collected. The data gathered were recorded with a specifically designed computer program and collected and analyzed using a Microsoft Excel 10 database. Data were evaluated using standard statistical analysis software; descriptive statistics including mean ± SD values and percentage were calculated for each variable. The relationship between the age of parents, between mother or father and the parents' degree of education levels, and the knowledge for their own children's oral health was explored using the chi-square test of homogeneity and Fisher's exact test ( P value of < 0.05 considered as statistically significant). Results. From the acquired data, it is possible to deduce that the major respondents were mothers aged from 36 to 45, while only a small part were fathers aged above 45 years. Questions related to parents' oral hygiene habits were included in the questionnaire, and from the sample taken into consideration, it emerges that 64.7% of the respondents (67.1% mothers and 57.7% fathers) periodically attend a dental office for a checkup, 20.9% tend to postpone the treatment, and 15.2% go there just for emergency. Some of the questions showed that 80% of the interviewed subjects use fluoride toothpaste for their child's oral hygiene. Conclusion. Prevention in childhood, in addition to being synonymous with monitoring the oral health of the child, means first of all to pay attention to parents who are the main behavioral reference. It emerged that there is no adequate knowledge about fluorine, especially when the subjects have a low educational level. A role of fundamental importance for the diffusion of adequate concepts in the field of oral hygiene is covered, according to the data received from the study carried out, by the dentist and dental hygienist.

Abstract:Although pregnancy is a physiological process it causes hormonal changes that can also affect the oral cavity. Pregnancy increases the risk of gum disease inflammation and tooth caries which could affect the health of the developing baby. Proper oral health is crucial both for mother and her babies and is related with mothers' awareness of this connection. The aim of this study was the self-assessment of women's both oral health and oral health literacy as well as mothers' awareness of the connection of oral health and pregnancy.

Abstract:Introduction Oral health is a fundamental component of well-being, and is closely associated with overall health and quality of life. Oral health may also affect the next generation. The children of mothers with poor oral health are likely to also have poor oral health as they go through life. We aim to investigate associations between maternal oral health and general health, pregnancy outcomes, offspring oral health and offspring general health. Methods and analysis The Lifetime Impact of Oral Health study is a prospective, observational cohort study being done at a single centre in Chongqing, China. A total of 1000 pregnant women will be recruited in their first trimester (11–14 weeks gestation). After obtaining informed consent, general and oral health assessments will be undertaken. Maternal lifestyle, demographic data and biospecimens (blood, hair, urine, nail clippings, saliva, dental plaque, buccal, vaginal and anal swabs) will be collected. Pregnancy outcomes will be recorded at the time of delivery. Cord blood and placenta samples will be collected. The offspring will be followed up for general and oral health examinations, neurodevelopmental assessments and biospecimen (dental plaque, saliva, buccal swabs, exfoliated primary dentition, urine, hair, nail clippings) collection until they are 15 years old. Biological samples will undergo comprehensive metabolomic, microbiome and epigenome analyses. Associations between maternal oral health and general health, pregnancy outcomes, offspring oral health and offspring general health will be investigated and the underlying mechanisms explored. Ethics and dissemination This project has been approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Affiliated Hospital of Stomatology of Chongqing Medical University (CQHS-REC-2021 LSNo.23). Participants will be required to provide informed consent to participate in the study. Dissemination of findings will take the form of publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national and international conferences. Trial registration number ChiCTR2100046898.

Oral Health Status and Dental Services Utilisation Among a Vulnerable Sample of Pregnant Women

Abstract:Introduction and aims: Oral health conditions during pregnancy can negatively impact both mother and fetus, highlighting the importance of maintaining dental care. In Canada, significant disparities exist between general and dental healthcare access, with limited evidence on oral health status and dental care utilisation among pregnant women. This study aimed to provide initial insights into self-perceived oral health status and dental utilisation patterns among a vulnerable sample of pregnant women in southwestern Ontario. Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited a convenient sample of pregnant women referred to the Family Medicine and Obstetrics Clinic, serving those without a family physician. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire adapted from the Canadian Health Measure Survey, the Canadian Community Health Survey, and the Survey of Maternal Health. Andersen and Newman's framework for health service utilisation was used as the theoretical framework. Descriptive and univariable analyses were conducted, followed by a forward stepwise selection of variables with p-values < 0.1 from the univariable analyses. Results: One-hundred-fifty patients were approached and 130 (86.7%) completed the questionnaire. Of these, 96 (73.9%) reported their oral health as good/excellent while 34 (26.2%) reported having poor/fair oral health. Education level and quality of life were the strongest predictors of oral health status. While 101 (77.7%) visited a dentist within the last 2 years, only 35 (26.9%) had a dental visit during pregnancy. Toothbrushing frequency was the main predictor of time since last dental visit, with no other predictive factors once toothbrushing was considered. Conclusion: The study sample showed relatively positive self-perceived oral health and dental visit patterns. However, the low rate of dental visits during pregnancy highlights the need for better integration of dental care into prenatal care. To ensure maternal and child health, pregnant women should be a high priority in policies aimed at improving access to dental care.

Abstract:Context: Pregnancy may exacerbate the frequency and severity of some dental problems. However, most pregnant women avoid going to the dentist. Aims: To examine the oral hygiene and dental care behaviors of women during pregnancy, to measure their knowledge levels, to reveal their oral and dental health literacy status, and their beliefs about treatment. Settings and design: The study was conducted for a period of 1 month with pregnant women over the age of 18 who presented to the obstetrics outpatient clinic and agreed to participate in the study and who had no known anomalies or complications. Methods and material: A survey was completed by face-to-face interviews with 317 pregnant women of different ages and gestational weeks. Participants were asked questions regarding their sociodemographic characteristics, pregnancy characteristics, oral hygiene-related beliefs, behaviors, and knowledge levels. Statistical analysis used: The data obtained in the study were analyzed with SPSS 21.0 program. Since the kurtosis and skewness values were between +3 and -3, parametric tests were used. Results: In total, 317 pregnant women between the ages of 18 and 43 participated in the study. The most common beliefs are listed as; babies receive the necessary calcium from the teeth, antibiotics given during dental treatment harm the baby, and panoramic radiography taken during treatment harms the baby. 91.5% of the participants did not visit the dentist after planning a pregnancy, and 89% of them did not visit the dentist during pregnancy. The most common reason not to visit the dentist is not having a dental problem. The rate of knowing that dental infections during pregnancy will affect the baby is 50.5%. Conclusions: In the present study, it is seen that pregnant women do not have adequate oral hygiene. The reasons were listed as various false beliefs and lack of sufficient knowledge. Health professionals should provide information about oral hygiene to pregnant women and direct them to the dentist.
