Abstract:We have studied the adsorption of gas molecules (CO, NO, NO2, O-2, N-2, CO2, and NH3) on graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) using first principles methods. The adsorption geometries, adsorption energies, charge transfer, and electronic band structures are obtained. We find that the electronic and transport properties of the GNR with an-nchair-shaped edges are sensitive to the adsorption of NH3, and the system exhibits n-type semiconducting behavior after NH3 adsorption. Other gas molecules have little effect on modifying the conductance of GNRs. Quantum transport calculations further indicate that NH3 molecules can be detected out of these gas molecules by the GNR-based sensor.

Abstract:Cryotherapy can now be applied using a variety of delivery systems and cryogens. We compared the Cryotech LCS 3000 liquid nitrogen system (Spembly, Andover, UK) with the CRYOcare argon gas-based system (Irvine, CA, U.S.A.) using three different 3-mm cryoprobes: an old liquid nitrogen probe (N-probe), a new N-probe featuring gas bypass and an argon gas probe. Each probe was tested in two models: (i) fresh sheep liver at 20 degrees C--the probe was inserted to a depth of 1.5 cm; the rate of ice ball formation was monitored by recording radial temperatures every 15 s at 5, 10, 15, and 20 mm from the cryoprobe, and the ice-ball diameter was measured every 2.5 min. After 10 min, the probe was warmed and the time taken until it could be extracted from the liver was recorded. (ii) Warm water bath--the probe was immersed in warm water (42 degrees C) for 15 min and the ice-ball diameter was measured at 5-min intervals. Radial temperatures in liver declined more rapidly (P < 0.001) and time to probe extraction was less (P < 0.01) when the argon gas system was used. The new N-probe performed better than its older counterpart, but was still slower than the argon gas system. In liver (20 degrees C), ice-ball diameters were similar after 10 min, but in warm water, they were larger when the new N-probe was used (P < 0.02). It would appear that the argon gas system is initially faster, but it does not achieve as large an ice ball in a warm environment as the liquid nitrogen system.

Abstract:Graphene, especially few-layer graphene solid film, has been found to strongly suppress fluorescence and enhance Raman signals of probe molecules. In this paper, we attempt to explore the possibility of using graphene nanocolloids as potential substrates for the enhancement of Raman scattering. Graphene nanocolloids chemically produced from the reduction of graphene oxide by sodium citrate are nearly all monolayers in solution and are also found to exhibit certain surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity to common aromatic probe molecules. Interestingly, largely different from few-layer graphene solid film, graphene nanocolloids show maximal SERS activity only when the probe molecules are at resonant laser excitation. According to our analysis, this phenomenon should arise from a combined effect of fluorescence quenching of graphene and a photoinduced charge transfer mechanism, in which the strong charge transfer accounts for the main contribution from close coupling between graphenes and probe molecules photoinduced by resonant excitation as well as the desolvation of graphene sheets and probe molecules.

Abstract:Graphene plasmon has attracted extensive interest due to the unprecedented electromagnetic confinement, long propagation distance, and tunable plasmonic frequency. Successful applications of graphene plasmon as infrared sensors have been recently demonstrated, yet they are mainly focused on solid/solid and solid/gas interfaces analysis. Herein, we, for the first time, propose a graphene plasmon-enhanced infrared sensor based on attenuated total reflection configuration for in situ analysis of aqueous-phase molecules. This IR sensor includes a boron-doped graphene (BG) nanodisk array fabricated on top of a ZnSe prism surface that supports attenuated total reflection surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRA). Our ATR-SEIRA platform is efficient and straightforward for in situ and label-free monitoring of the interaction of biomolecules without interference from the environments, allowing for the extraction of instant spectroscopic information in a complex biological event. Utilizing the near-field enhancement of graphene plasmon, the binding interaction of L-selectin with its aptamer as a demonstration has been investigated to evaluate the specific protein recognition process. The detection limit of the target protein reaches 0.5 nM. Our work demonstrates that chemical-doped graphene plasmon combined with ATR-SEIRA is a promising signal enhancement platform for in situ aqueous-phase biosensing.
Raman Spectroscopy of Lithographically Patterned Graphene Nanoribbons

Abstract:Nanometer-scale graphene objects are attracting much research interest because of newly emerging properties originating from quantum confinement effects. We present Raman spectroscopy studies of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) which are known to have nonzero electronic bandgap. GNRs of width ranging from 15 nm to 100 nm have been prepared by e-beam lithographic patterning of mechanically exfoliated graphene followed by oxygen plasma etching. Raman spectra of narrow GNRs can be characterized by upshifted G band and prominent disorder-related D band originating from scattering at ribbon edges. The D-to-G band intensity ratio generally increases with decreasing ribbon width. However, its decrease for width < 25 nm, partly attributed to amorphization at the edges, provides a valuable experimental estimate on D mode relaxation length of <5 nm. The upshift in the G band of the narrowest GNRs can be attributed to confinement effect or chemical doping by functional groups on the GNR edges. Notably, GNRs are much more susceptible to photothermal effects resulting in reversible hole doping caused by atmospheric oxygen than bulk graphene sheets. Finally we show that the 2D band is still a reliable marker in determining the number of layers of GNRs despite its significant broadening for very narrow GNRs.

Ultrasensitive Molecular Sensor Using N-doped Graphene Through Enhanced Raman Scattering.

Abstract:As a novel and efficient surface analysis technique, graphene-enhanced Raman scattering (GERS) has attracted increasing research attention in recent years. In particular, chemically doped graphene exhibits improved GERS effects when compared with pristine graphene for certain dyes, and it can be used to efficiently detect trace amounts of molecules. However, the GERS mechanism remains an open question. We present a comprehensive study on the GERS effect of pristine graphene and nitrogen-doped graphene. By controlling nitrogen doping, the Fermi level (E F) of graphene shifts, and if this shift aligns with the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of a molecule, charge transfer is enhanced, thus significantly amplifying the molecule's vibrational Raman modes. We confirmed these findings using different organic fluorescent molecules: rhodamine B, crystal violet, and methylene blue. The Raman signals from these dye molecules can be detected even for concentrations as low as 10(-11) M, thus providing outstanding molecular sensing capabilities. To explain our results, these nitrogen-doped graphene-molecule systems were modeled using dispersion-corrected density functional theory. Furthermore, we demonstrated that it is possible to determine the gaps between the highest occupied and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (HOMO-LUMO) of different molecules when different laser excitations are used. Our simulated Raman spectra of the molecules also suggest that the measured Raman shifts come from the dyes that have an extra electron. This work demonstrates that nitrogen-doped graphene has enormous potential as a substrate when detecting low concentrations of molecules and could also allow for an effective identification of their HOMO-LUMO gaps.

Abstract:We report the optical imaging and absorption spectroscopy on atomically precise armchair graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) on insulating fused silica substrates. This is achieved by controlling light polarization on macroscopically aligned GNRs which greatly enhances the optical contrast of the submonolayer GNRs on the insulating substrates. We measure the linear absorption spectra of 7-armchair and 9-armchair GNRs in this study, and the experimental data agree qualitatively with ab inito calculation results. The polarization spectroscopy technique enables an unambiguous optical identification of GNRs and provides a rapid tool to characterize the transferred film over a large area.

Abstract:Characteristics of the Raman spectrum from carbon onions have been identified in terms of the position of the G peak and appearance of the transverse optic phonon peaks. Five new peaks were observed in the low wavenumber region, at about 1100, 861, 700, 450 and 250 cm−1. The origins of these peaks are discussed in terms of the phonon density of states (PDOS) and phonon dispersion curves of graphite. The curvature of the graphene planes is invoked to explain the relaxation of the Raman selection rules and the appearance of the new peaks. The Raman spectrum of carbon onions is compared with that of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). The strain of graphene planes due to curvature has been estimated analytically and is used to account for the downward shift of the G peak.
Graphene-Thickness-Dependent Graphene-Enhanced Raman Scattering

Abstract:Graphene-enhanced Raman scattering (GERS), enhancing Raman signals on graphene surface, is an excellent approach to investigate the properties of graphene via the Raman enhancement effect. In the present study, we studied the graphene-thickness dependent GERS in detail. First, by keeping molecule density on few-layer graphene using vacuum thermal deposition method, GERS enhancement was found to be the same for all graphene layers (one to six layers). While adsorbing probe molecules by solution soaking the GERS enhancing factor was different on monolayer and bilayer graphene. By soaking in low concentration solutions, the GERS intensity on bilayer graphene was stronger than that on monolayer graphene, whereas by soaking under high concentration solutions, the GERS intensity difference was much less for that on monolayer and on bilayer. Molecule density, molecular configuration, and GERS enhancing factor are further discussed for molecules on monolayer and bilayer graphene. It was finally concluded that the abnormal graphene-thickness dependence of GERS between monolayer and bilayer graphene was attributed to the different enhancement for GERS on monolayer and bilayer graphene. Monolayer and bilayer graphene have different electronic structure and then doping effect of probe molecules, which shifts the Fermi level of graphenes differently. As a result, monolayer and bilayer graphene have different energy band matching with the probe molecules, yielding different chemical enhancement.
Can Graphene Be Used As A Substrate for Raman Enhancement?

Abstract:Graphene is a monolayer of carbon atoms packed into a two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb crystal structure, which is a special material with many excellent properties. In the present study, we will discuss the possibility that graphene can be used as a substrate for enhancing Raman signals of adsorbed molecules. Here, phthalocyanine (Pc), rhodamine 6G (R6G), protoporphyin IX (PPP), and crystal violet (CV), which are popular molecules widely used as a Raman probe, are deposited equally on graphene and a SiO2/Si substrate using vacuum evaporation or solution soaking. By comparing the Raman signals of molecules on monolayer graphene and on a SiO2/Si substrate, we observed that the intensities of the Raman signals on monolayer graphene are much stronger than on a SiO2/Si substrate, indicating a clear Raman enhancement effect on the surface of monolayer graphene. For solution soaking, the Raman signals of the molecules are visible even though the concentration is low to 10(-8) mol/L or less. What's more interesting, the enhanced efficiencies are quite different on monolayer, few-layer, multilayer graphene, graphite, and highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). The Raman signals of molecules on multilayer graphene are even weaker than on a SiO2/Si substrate, and the signals are even invisible on graphite and HOPG. Taking the Raman signals on the SiO2/Si substrate as a reference, Raman enhancement factors on the surface of monolayer graphene can be obtained using Raman intensity ratios. The Raman enhancement factors are quite different for different peaks, changing from 2 to 17. Furthermore, we found that the Raman enhancement factors can be distinguished through three classes that correspond to the symmetry of vibrations of the molecule. We attribute this enhancement to the charge transfer between graphene and the molecules, which result in a chemical enhancement. This is a new phenomenon for graphene that will expand the application of graphene to microanalysis and is good for studying the basic properties of both graphene and SERS.

Abstract:Raman spectroscopy is known to be an effective tool for characterization of graphene and graphene multilayers on the standard Si/SiO2 (300 nm) substrates, which allows one to determine non-destructively the number of the graphene layers and assess their quality. The Raman phonon peaks undergo modification when graphene is placed on other substrates due to changes in the nature and density of the defects, surface charges and different strength of the graphene - substrate bonding. We show that despite the spectrum variations the deconvolution of the double-resonant 2D band allows one to identify the number of graphene layers even on amorphous glass substrates. The results extend the application of Raman spectroscopy as nanometrology tool for graphene and graphene-based devices.

Abstract:Spectroscopy of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is nowadays widely used in the field of bio-science and medicine. These applications require new enhancing substrates with special properties. They should be non-toxic, environmentally friendly and (bio-) compatible with examined samples. Flavonoids are natural antioxidants with many positive effects on human health. Simultaneously, they can be used as reducing agent in preparation procedure of plasmonic enhancing substrate for SERS spectroscopy. The best amplifiers of Raman vibrational spectroscopic signal are generally silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). In this study, several flavonoids (forming a logical set) were used as reducing agent in AgNPs preparation procedures. Reactivity of 10 structurally arranged flavonoids (namely flavone, chrysin, apigenin, luteolin, tricetin, 3-hydroxyflavone, galangin, kaempferol, quercetin and myricetin) was compared and SERS-activity of prepared AgNPs was tested using model analyte riboflavin. Riboflavin was detected down to concentration 10<sup>-9</sup>mol/l.
Extraordinary Enhancement of Raman Scattering from Pyridine on Single Crystal Au and Pt Electrodes by Shell-Isolated Au Nanoparticles

Abstract:We used shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) to systematically study the adsorption of pyridine on low-index Au(hkl) and Pt(hkl) single crystal electrodes. Our gold-core silica-shell nanoparticles (Au@SiO(2) NPs) boost the intensity of Raman scattering from molecules adsorbed on atomically flat surfaces. The average enhancement factor reaches 10(6) for Au(110) and 10(5) for Pt(110), which is comparable to or even greater than that obtained for bare gold NPs (a widely adopted SERS substrate). 3D-FDTD simulations reveal that this large enhancement is due to the transfer of the "hotspots" from NP-NP gaps to NP-surface gaps. We also found that the SHINERS intensity strongly depends on the surface crystallographic orientation, with differences up to a factor of 30. Periodic DFT calculations and theoretical analysis of dielectric functions indicate that this facet-dependence is predominantly governed by the dielectric property of the surface. The results presented in this work may open up new approaches for the characterization of adsorbates and reaction pathways on a wide range of smooth surfaces.

Abstract:The investigation of interfacial processes at the molecular level is an essential research area in electrocatalysis. To more clearly understand the electrocatalytic interfacial reaction mechanism, an in situ and highly sensitive surface investigation technique is required. Shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) is a highly sensitive surface analysis approach that can gather spectral evidence of interfacial intermediates, which commonly have a short lifetime and trace amount that are difficult to be detected. In this review, we first cover the basics of the SHINERS and SHINERS-satellite strategies, including their principle, fabrication method, and features. We then summarized the applications of SHINERS and SHINERS-satellite strategies for the studies of interfacial electrocatalytic process in fuel cells, water electrolysis, and CO oxidation and reduction. Last but not least are the summary and outlook, in which the potential research prospects of SHINERS and SHINERS-satellite are proposed.

Alternative nano-lithographic tools for shell-isolated nanoparticle enhanced Raman spectroscopy substrates

Abstract:Chemically synthesized metal nanoparticles (MNPs) have been widely used as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates for monitoring catalytic reactions. In some applications, however, the SERS MNPs, besides being plasmonically active, can also be catalytically active and result in Raman signals from undesired side products. The MNPs are typically insulated with a thin (∼3 nm), in principle pin-hole-free shell to prevent this. This approach, which is known as shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS), offers many advantages, such as better thermal and chemical stability of the plasmonic nanoparticle. However, having both a high enhancement factor and ensuring that the shell is pin-hole-free is challenging because there is a trade-off between the two when considering the shell thickness. So far in the literature, shell insulation has been successfully applied only to chemically synthesized MNPs. In this work, we alternatively study different combinations of chemical synthesis (bottom-up) and lithographic (top-down) routes to obtain shell-isolated plasmonic nanostructures that offer chemical sensing capabilities. The three approaches we study in this work include (1) chemically synthesized MNPs + chemical shell, (2) lithographic substrate + chemical shell, and (3) lithographic substrate + atomic layer deposition (ALD) shell. We find that ALD allows us to fabricate controllable and reproducible pin-hole-free shells. We showcase the ability to fabricate lithographic SHINER substrates which report an enhancement factor of 7.5 × 10 3 ± 17% for our gold nanodot substrates coated with a 2.8 nm aluminium oxide shell. Lastly, by introducing a gold etchant solution to our fabricated SHINER substrate, we verified that the shells fabricated with ALD are truly pin-hole-free.

Abstract:Nanoscale deformations and corrugations occur in graphene-like two-dimensional materials during their incorporation into hybrid structures and real devices, such as sensors based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS-based sensors). The structural features mentioned above are known to affect the electronic properties of graphene, thus highly sensitive and high-resolution techniques are required to reveal and characterize arising local defects, mechanical deformations, and phase transformations. In this study, we demonstrate that gap-mode tip-enhanced Raman Scattering (gm-TERS), which offers the benefits of structural and chemical analytical methods, allows variations in the structure and mechanical state of a two-dimensional material to be probed with nanoscale spatial resolution. In this work, we demonstrate locally enhanced gm-TERS on a monolayer graphene film placed on a plasmonic substrate with specific diameter gold nanodisks. SERS measurements are employed to determine the optimal disk diameter and excitation wavelength for further realization of gm-TERS. A significant local plasmonic enhancement of the main vibrational modes in graphene by a factor of 100 and a high spatial resolution of 10 nm are achieved in the gm-TERS experiment, making gm-TERS chemical mapping possible. By analyzing the gm-TERS spectra of the graphene film in the local area of a nanodisk, the local tensile mechanical strain in graphene was detected, resulting in a split of the G mode into two components, G + and G − . Using the frequency split in the positions of G + and G − modes in the TERS spectra, the stress was estimated to be up to 1.5%. The results demonstrate that gap-mode TERS mapping allows rapid and precise characterization of local structural defects in two-dimensional materials on the nanoscale.

Molecular Selectivity of Graphene-Enhanced Raman Scattering

Abstract:Graphene-enhanced Raman scattering (GERS) is a recently discovered Raman enhancement phenomenon that uses graphene as the substrate for Raman enhancement and can produce clean and reproducible Raman signals of molecules with increased signal intensity. Compared to conventional Raman enhancement techniques, such as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS), in which the Raman enhancement is essentially due to the electromagnetic mechanism, GERS mainly relies on a chemical mechanism and therefore shows unique molecular selectivity. In this paper, we report graphene-enhanced Raman scattering of a variety of different molecules with different molecular properties. We report a strong molecular selectivity for the GERS effect with enhancement factors varying by as much as 2 orders of magnitude for different molecules. Selection rules are discussed with reference to two main features of the molecule, namely its molecular energy levels and molecular structures. In particular, the enhancement factor involving molecular energy levels requires the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energies to be within a suitable range with respect to graphenes Fermi level, and this enhancement effect can be explained by the time-dependent perturbation theory of Raman scattering. The enhancement factor involving the choice of molecular structures indicates that molecular symmetry and substituents similar to that of the graphene structure are found to be favorable for GERS enhancement. The effectiveness of these factors can be explained by group theory and the charge-transfer interaction between molecules and graphene. Both factors, involving the molecular energy levels and structural symmetry of the molecules, suggest that a remarkable GERS enhancement requires strong moleculegraphene coupling and thus effective charge transfer between the molecules and graphene. These conclusions are further experimentally supported by the change of the UVvisible absorption spectra of molecules when in contact with graphene and these conclusions are theoretically corroborated by first-principles calculations. These research findings are important for gaining fundamental insights into the graphenemolecule interaction and the chemical mechanism in Raman enhancement, as well as for advancing the role of such understanding both in guiding chemical and molecule detection applications and in medical and biological technology developments.
Quantifying Alignment and Quality of Graphene Nanoribbons: A Polarized Raman Spectroscopy Approach

Abstract:Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are atomically precise stripes of graphene with tunable electronic properties, making them promising for room-temperature switching applications like field-effect transistors (FETs). However, challenges persist in GNR processing and characterization, particularly regarding GNR alignment during device integration. In this study, we quantitatively assess the alignment and quality of 9-atom-wide armchair graphene nanoribbons (9-AGNRs) on different substrates using polarized Raman spectroscopy. Our approach incorporates an extended model that describes GNR alignment through a Gaussian distribution of angles. We not only extract the angular distribution of GNRs but also analyze polarization-independent intensity contributions to the Raman signal, providing insights into surface disorder on the growth substrate and after substrate transfer. Our findings reveal that low-coverage samples grown on Au(788) exhibit superior uniaxial alignment compared to high-coverage samples, attributed to preferential growth along step edges, as confirmed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Upon substrate transfer, the alignment of low-coverage samples deteriorates, accompanied by increased surface disorder. On the other hand, high-coverage samples maintain alignment and exhibit reduced disorder on the target substrate. Our extended model enables a quantitative description of GNR alignment and quality, facilitating the development of GNR-based nanoelectronic devices.
