Abstract:Climate change is threatening marine ecosystems on a global scale but particularly so in the Arctic. As a result of warming, species are shifting their distributions, altering marine communities and predator-prey interactions. This is known as the Atlantification of the Arctic. Warming may favor short-lived, opportunistic species such as cephalopods, marine mollusks that previously have been hypothesized to be winners in an ocean of change. To detect temporal regional trends in biodiversity, long-term annual surveys in hotspots of climate change are an unparalleled source of data. Here, we use 18 years of annual bottom trawl data (2005–2022) to analyse cephalopods in the western Barents Sea. More specifically, our research goals are to assess temporal trends in cephalopod fauna composition, abundance and biomass, and to relate these trends to climate change in the western Barents Sea. Main changes in cephalopod diversity and distribution occurred in mid-2000s and early 2010s, which corresponds with a period of warming in the Arctic since the late 1990s/early 2000s. Repeated increased occurrence of the boreal-subtropical cephalopods was recorded from 2005–2013 to 2014–2022. Moreover, the abundance of cephalopods in the area (in general and for most taxa) increased from 2005–2013 to 2014–2022. These observations suggest that the cephalopod community of the Barents Sea is subjected to Atlantification since the 2005–2013 period. This corresponds with previously reported evidence of the Atlantification in fishes and benthic invertebrates in the Barents Sea and benthic invertebrates. 'Typical' Arctic cephalopod species such as Bathypolypus spp., Gonatus fabricii and Rossia spp., however, are still much more abundant in the western Barents Sea compared to the deep-sea and the boreal-subtropical species. We also found indirect indications for body-size reduction in Bathypolypus spp. from 2005–2013 to 2014–2022. Overall, the temporal trends in the Barents Sea cephalopod fauna provide evidence for changing marine communities in the Arctic.

Deep demersal fish communities respond rapidly to warming in a frontal region between Arctic and Atlantic waters

Abstract:The assessment of climate impact on marine communities dwelling deeper than the well-studied shelf seas has been hampered by the lack of long-term data. For a long time, the prevailing expectation has been that thermal stability in deep ocean layers will delay ecosystem responses to warming. Few observational studies have challenged this view and indicated that deep organisms can respond exceptionally fast to physical change at the sea surface. To address the depth-specific impact of climate change, we investigated spatio-temporal changes in fish community structure along a bathymetry gradient of 150-1500 m between 1998 and 2016 in East Greenland. Here, the Arctic East Greenland Current and the Atlantic Irminger Current meet and mix, representing a sub-Arctic transition zone. We found the strongest signals of community reorganizations at depths between 350 and 1000 m and only weak responses in the shallowest and deepest regions. Changes were in synchrony with atmospheric warming, loss in sea ice and variability in physical sea surface conditions both within our study region and North of the Denmark Strait. These results suggest that interannual variability and long-term climate trends of the larger ecoregion can rapidly affect fish communities down to 1000-m depth through atmospheric ocean coupling and food web interactions.

Warming changes the life history composition of marine fish communities at high latitudes

Abstract:Across marine ecosystems, species are redistributing as a response to increased sea temperatures. In the Arctic, rapid warming causes poleward shifts of boreal species. Which species are redistributing and the drivers of their movements can be related to their life history traits. Here, we aimed to characterize and analyze the spatio-temporal changes in the life history strategy (LHS) composition of fish communities in the Barents Sea (2004-2017). We performed an archetype analysis to characterize species’ LHS based on their life history traits and related it to the equilibrium-periodic-opportunistic framework. Fish species in temperate ecosystems were documented to be largely distributed along the opportunistic-periodic continuum, whereas many fish species in the Barents Sea are distributed along the opportunistic-equilibrium continuum, illustrating the specificity of Arctic fish LHS. During the study period, boreal periodic species showed an increase in the central Barents Sea, a zoogeographic transition area. Simultaneously, Arctic opportunistic species retracted to cold waters, and the abundance of equilibrium strategists increased in the eastern Barents Sea. The expansion of periodic species may be explained by the configuration of their traits. This includes a high reproductive potential, broader diet, and migratory behavior. These traits might increase their tolerance and adaptive capacity to a changing environment. Fish LHS play a crucial role in fisheries management, particularly in promoting better fishing practices for vulnerable populations. By understanding the various LHS adopted by different fish species and their environmental preferences, fisheries managers can develop informed fishing strategies on a broader scale.

Abstract:During the last three decades, as water temperatures along the Norwegian coast increased rapidly, many fish species have moved north. The northward expansion in species distributions resulted in higher biodiversity and more similar species composition along the entire coast. The documented changes in diversity and composition are reshaping coastal ecosystems, influencing their functioning, and potentially affecting their provision of goods and services. The rapid, climate‐driven changes in fish biodiversity stress the urgent need for a climate adaptation of integrated coastal management. Rapid warming at high latitudes triggers poleward shifts of species' distributions that impact marine biodiversity. In the open sea, the documented redistributions of fish lead to a borealization of Arctic fauna. A climate‐driven borealization and increased species diversity at high latitudes are also expected in coastal fish communities, but they have not been previously documented on a large, biogeographic scale. Here, we investigate the impact of temperature change over the last 25 years on fish communities along the coast of Norway. The study area, spanning different ecoclimatic zones between 62° and 71° N, harbors over 200 species of boreal and Arctic fish. Several of these fish species are harvested by coastal and indigenous communities, influencing settlement geography and livelihood. The long‐term data on coastal water temperatures and fish species were obtained from monitoring stations and scientific surveys. Water temperature measured at three fixed sampling stations distributed along the coast show increased temperatures during the study period. The fish species distribution and abundance data were obtained from the annually standardized scientific bottom trawl survey program. Fish species richness, which was highest in the south, increased with warming first in the south and then, gradually, further north, eventually affecting biodiversity in the whole study area. Fish community composition showed a distinct latitudinal pattern early in the study, with Arctic fish species confined to the north and boreal species dominating the south. The poleward shifts eventually eroded this zoogeographic pattern, resulting in more boreal fish species in the north and an increased homogenization of species composition along the Norwegian coast. The climate‐driven reorganization of fish communities affects coastal ecosystems that are exposed to fisheries, aquaculture, and other rapidly expanding human activities, stressing the urgent need for a climate adaptation of integrated coastal management.

Interaction between three key species in the sea ice-reduced Arctic Barents Sea system

Abstract:Population dynamics depend on trophic interactions that are affected by climate change. The rise in sea temperature is associated with the disappearance of sea ice in the Arctic. In the Arctic part of the Barents Sea, Atlantic cod, capelin and polar cod are three fish populations that interact and are confronted with climate-induced sea ice reductions. The first is a major predator in the system, while the last two are key species in Arctic and sub-Arctic ecosystems, respectively. There are still many unknowns regarding how predicted environmental change may influence the joint dynamics of these populations. Using time series from a 32 year long survey, we developed a state-space model that jointly modelled the dynamics of cod, capelin and polar cod. Using a hindcast scenario approach, we projected the effect of reduced sea ice on these populations. We show that the impact of sea ice reduction and concomitant sea temperature increase may lead to a decrease of polar cod abundance at the benefit of capelin but not of cod which may decrease, resulting in strong changes in the food web. Our analyses show that climate change in the Arcto-boreal system can generate different species assemblages and new trophic interactions, which is the knowledge needed for effective management measures.
Lateral diffusion and fatty acid composition in vascular smooth muscle membrane from stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Abstract:We measured membrane fluidity and fatty acid composition in cultured vascular smooth muscle cells from stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive and Wistar-Kyoto normotensive rats. Membrane fluidity was measured as a lateral diffusion of 5 N (octadecanoyl) aminofluorescein using fluorescence microscopy and fluorescence recovery after photobleaching. Fatty acid composition of membrane fractions was measured using high performance liquid chromatography. Lateral diffusion was significantly lower (the membrane had lower fluidity) in vascular smooth muscle cells from stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats as compared to those cells isolated from Wistar-Kyoto reference strain. The ratio of arachidonic acid to total fatty acids was 0.058 +/- 0.007 in the plasma membrane from stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats and 0.036 +/- 0.005 in that from Wistar-Kyoto rats, P = .005. Similarly, the ratios of arachidonic to oleic acid and arachidonic to palmitic acid were significantly greater in cells from stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (P = .002 for difference in each ratio). These results show decreased lateral diffusion (decreased membrane fluidity) in vascular smooth muscle cells from stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats. This is associated with increased content of arachidonic acid, the major precursor of prostaglandins and other eicosanoids. We postulate that local changes in the unsaturated fatty acid composition related to arachidonic acid storage and release contribute to reduced membrane fluidity in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats.
Severe Continental-Scale Impacts of Climate Change Are Happening Now: Extreme Climate Events Impact Marine Habitat Forming Communities Along 45% of Australia’s Coast

Abstract:Recent increases in the frequency of extreme climate events (ECEs) such as heatwaves and floods have been attributed to climate change, and could have pronounced ecosystem and evolutionary impacts because they provide little opportunity for organisms to acclimate or adapt. Here we synthesize information on a series of ECEs in Australia from 2011 to 2017 that led to well-documented, abrupt, and extensive mortality of key marine habitat-forming organisms – corals, kelps, seagrasses, and mangroves – along >45% of the continental coastline of Australia. Coral bleaching occurred across much of northern Australia due to marine heatwaves (MHWs) affecting different regions in 2011, 2013, 2016, and 2017, while seagrass was impacted by anomalously high rainfall events in 2011 on both east and west tropical coasts. A MHW off western Australia (WA) during the 2011 La Niña extended into temperate and subtropical regions, causing widespread mortality of kelp forests and seagrass communities at their northern distribution limits. Mangrove forests experienced high mortality during the 2016 El Niño across coastal areas of northern and north-WA due to severe water stress driven by drought and anomalously low mean sea levels. This series of ECEs reflects a variety of different events – MHWs, intense rainfall from tropical storms, and drought. Their repeated occurrence and wide extent are consistent with projections of increased frequency and intensity of ECEs and have broad implications elsewhere because similar trends are predicted globally. The unprecedented and widespread nature of these ECE impacts has likely produced substantial ecosystem-wide repercussions. Predictions from ecosystem models suggest that the widespread mortality of habitat-forming taxa will have long-term and in some cases irreversible consequences, especially if they continue to become more frequent or severe. The abrupt ecological changes that are caused by ECEs could have greater long-term impacts than slower warming that leads to gradual reorganization and possible evolution and adaptation. ECEs are an emerging threat to marine ecosystems, and will require better seasonal prediction and mitigation strategies.

Abstract:The impacts of climate change on Arctic marine systems are noticeable within the scientific "lifetime" of most researchers and the iconic image of a polar bear struggling to stay on top of a melting ice floe captures many of the dominant themes of Arctic marine ecosystem change. But has our focus on open‐ocean systems and parameters that are more easily modeled and sensed remotely neglected an element that is responding more dramatically and with broader implications for Arctic ecosystems? We argue that a complementary set of changes to the open ocean is occurring along Arctic coasts, amplified by the interaction with changes on land and in the sea. We observe an increased number of ecosystem drivers with larger implications for the ecological and human communities they touch than are quantifiable in the open Arctic Ocean. Substantial knowledge gaps exist that must be filled to support adaptation and sustainability of socioecological systems along Arctic coasts.

Abstract:The marine environment experiences temperature variability both in the short and long term due to a combination of variable surface heating, ocean transport and mixing effects. The impact of temperature anomalies on the marine ecosystem depends on their duration and amplitude compared with timescales of the ecological response and the susceptibility of various components of the ecosystem to the change. Even relatively short events can affect reproduction and growth, and potentially cause mortality when organism tolerance limits are exceeded. We focus on sustained (lasting longer than 5 days) temperature events that are extreme relative to the phase of the seasonal cycle and consider both heatwaves and cold-spells. We used daily-mean near-bed temperatures from the CMEMS (https://marine.copernicus.eu/) northwest European Shelf reanalysis and analysis/forecast simulations to identify heatwaves and cold-spells for the period 1993 to 2019. Monthly fisheries landings data for 1993 to 2016 from the Cefas Fisheries Activity Database for England and Wales (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/fishing-activity-and-landings-data-collection-and-processing) were analysed to identify potential impacts of the extreme temperature events on fish and shellfish. Widespread heatwaves and cold-spells occurred in the southern North Sea throughout the period 1993 to 2019 but with no significant trends in the extent or magnitude of events. Winter cold-spells occurred in 1994, 1996, 1997, 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2018 and there were widespread heatwaves in 1998, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2014 to 2019. Statistical analysis of the fisheries landings data identified a link between extreme temperature events and key fish and shellfish stocks in the North Sea. Catches of sole and sea bass increased in years with cold-spells, while catches of red mullet and edible crabs decreased. For heatwaves, the impact on fisheries catch data lagged the temperature events by five years: sole, European lobster and sea bass catches increased whilst red mullet catches reduced.&#160;
Transformative ecological and human impacts from climate change and diminished sea ice in the northern Bering Sea

Abstract:Our goal is to tie climate scale meteorology to regional physics and ecosystem changes, and on to human impacts. There was record minimum sea-ice cover during winter 2018 and 2019 in the Bering Sea, with continuing multi-year impacts on the marine ecosystem and human activities. The back-to-back sea-ice minimums during 2018 and 2019 were certainly unexpected, given the normal large year-to-year variability of storms for the northern Bering Sea. Ecological shifts indicated reorganization of the northern marine food web that included loss of sea-ice algae and young crabs, and predatory cod and pollock moving north impacting lower trophic levels. Possible direct impacts from sea-ice loss and warmer temperatures included increased seabird and ice-associated seal emaciation and mortality, and increased harmful algal blooms. These changes affected regional food security, human/wildlife health, cultural activities, and marine wildlife conservation. Global warming initiated these events through a weakened atmospheric Arctic Front that promotes a self-reinforcing cycle of sea-ice loss, warmer temperatures, southerly winds and a wavy jet stream. Resulting impacts to livelihoods in the northern Bering Sea were commercial and non-commercial subsistence acquisition of essential marine resources for sale and direct consumption. Interannual variability is still important; during 2022 and 2023 the Aleutian Low pressure system was regionally dominant and sea ice was near the climatological average. Projections for the next decades are for an increasing frequency of low sea-ice years and a continuing ecosystem transition impacting essential marine wildlife resources and residents of the coastal northern Bering Sea.

Environment outweighs the effects of fishing in regulating demersal community structure in an exploited marine ecosystem

Abstract:Global climate change has already caused bottom temperatures of coastal marine ecosystems to increase worldwide. These ecosystems face many pressures, of which fishing is one of the most important. While consequences of global warming on commercial species are studied extensively, the importance of the increase in bottom temperature and of variation in fishing effort is more rarely considered together in these exploited ecosystems. Using a 17‐year time series from an international bottom‐trawl survey, we investigated co‐variations of an entire demersal ecosystem (101 taxa) with the environment in the Celtic Sea. Our results showed that over the past two decades, biotic communities in the Celtic Sea were likely controlled more by environmental variables than fisheries, probably due to its long history of exploitation. At the scale of the entire zone, relations between taxa and the environment remained stable over the years, but at a local scale, in the center of the Celtic Sea, dynamics were driven by inter‐annual variation in temperature. Fishing was an important factor structuring species assemblages at the beginning of the time series (2000) but decreased in importance after 2009. This was most likely caused by a change in spatial distribution of fishing effort, following a change in targeted taxa from nephrops to deeper water anglerfish that did not co‐vary with fishing effort. Increasing bottom temperatures could induce additional changes in the coming years, notably in the cold‐water commercial species cod, hake, nephrops and American plaice. We showed that analyzing co‐variation is an effective way to screen a large number of taxa and highlight those that may be most susceptible to future simultaneous increases in temperature and changes in exploitation pattern by fisheries. This information can be particularly relevant for ecosystem assessments.

Understanding Decadal-Scale Dynamics in the Bering Sea: Investigating Trends and Variability in Sea Ice, Winds, and Waves

Abstract:Despite the societal and economic importance of the Bering Sea, recent rapid changes in surface ocean conditions are not well documented. We address this gap by characterizing the Bering Sea winter ice–wind–wave climate using satellite observations and reanalysis data. Nine of the last 10 years (2014–23) have experienced anomalously low sea ice extent relative to the 1980–2023 mean. Between 2003 and 2023, gale force wind speeds have become more common and satellite altimeter observations show significant wave height (SWH) has increased ≥6 m, and has increased by 1 m between 2003 and 2023, while 20 days yr−1 exhibit SWH > 9 m. Winters between 2018 and 2023 were the six stormiest since 2003, and the sea ice season decreases by 1–4 days yr−1. Should ice loss in the Bering Sea continue to decline, we hypothesize that the frequency of extreme waves over the Bering Sea shelf would increase, severely impacting coastal communities. In September 2022, extratropical cyclone Merbok caused unprecedented SWH (>15 m) over the shelf which were uncharacteristic for the season, and caused widespread coastal inundation and property damage. Such anomalous wave conditions exemplify the emerging threat storms pose in a future where sea ice is absent more frequently in winter, when severe storms are most common. Satellite altimeters have improved the observation of surface ocean conditions in the Bering Sea during the most intense storms, and we demonstrate that a suite of five or more altimeters is required to capture regional events adequately. Significance Statement Although the Bering Sea region has recently endured rapid sea ice loss and the decline of several species important for subsistence and commercial fishing, it has relatively few resources to monitor and mitigate changing climatic conditions. In this article, we show that extreme wind and wave conditions in the Bering Sea have strongly increased in recent years, as sea ice has declined. This points to a need for reliable and continued monitoring, and with only two wave buoys providing year-round observations, an adequate constellation of ocean remote sensing instruments is required to capture extreme ocean–ice–atmosphere events in an isolated and challenging environment.

[Basic ethological considerations concerning the evaluation of the welfare of farm animals].

Abstract:In the assessment of husbandry conditions with regard to farm animal welfare the probability or risk is evaluated to which extent the animals are feeling well or are prone to pain, suffering or physical harm under the specific husbandry conditions. It is emphasised that well-being is more than merely the absence of pain, suffering and physical harm. Well-being is defined as the experience of the extent of being able to successfully cope with the environment. Consequently, any prevention to actively and successfully interact with the environment may impair animal well-being. This situation often arises because of conflicts between husbandry conditions and innate species-specific behaviour programs, regardless of any domestication effects on the reactivity of the farm animals to their environment. Based on these presumptions, four broad categories of influence on the well-being of animals are identified and exemplary explained. On the side of the environment these are the extent of (1) physical opportunity to perform species-specific behaviour, (2) availability of adequate stimuli and substrates for this behaviour and (3) adequate learning opportunities, especially during rearing. On the animals' side it is the extent of (4) their genetically based bodily capacity to perform species-specific behaviour. Less behavioural restriction is associated with the likelihood that better well-being is safeguarded under the aspect of behaviour. For a full assessment with respect to animal welfare also health aspects and other variables as appropriate must be taken into account. The assessment is comparative by nature and does not in itself include any conclusion about the acceptability of certain conditions.
Increases in Arctic extreme climatic events are linked to negative fitness effects on the local biota

Abstract:The Arctic harbours uniquely adapted biodiversity and plays an important role in climate regulation. Strong warming trends in the terrestrial Arctic have been linked to an increase in aboveground biomass (Arctic greening) and community wide shifts such as the northwards-expansion of boreal species (borealisation). Whilst considerable efforts have been made to understand the effects of warming trends in average temperatures on Arctic biota, far fewer studies have focused on trends in extreme climate events and their biotic effects, which have been suggested to be particularly impactful during the Arctic winter months. Here, we present an analysis of trends in two ecologically relevant winter extreme events, extreme winter warming and rain-on-snow, followed by a meta-analysis on the evidence base for their effects on Arctic biota. We show a strong increase in extreme winter warming across the entire Arctic and high variability in rain-on-snow trends, with some regions recently experiencing rain-on-snow for the first time whilst others seeing a decrease in these events. Ultimately, both extreme events show significant changes in their characteristics and patterns of emergence. Our meta-analysis, encompassing 178 effect sizes across 17 studies and 49 species, demonstrates that extreme winter warming and rain-on-snow induce negative impacts on Arctic biota, with certain taxonomic groups, notably angiosperms and chordates (mostly vertebrates), exhibiting higher sensitivity than others. Our study provides evidence for both emerging trends in Arctic winter extreme climate events and significant negative biotic effects of such events, which calls for attention to winter weather variability under climate change in the conservation of Arctic biodiversity, whilst highlighting important knowledge gaps.

Response of the copepod community to interannual differences in sea-ice cover and water masses in the northern Barents Sea

Abstract:The reduction of Arctic summer sea ice due to climate change can lead to increased primary production in parts of the Barents Sea if sufficient nutrients are available. Changes in the timing and magnitude of primary production may have cascading consequences for the zooplankton community and ultimately for higher trophic levels. In Arctic food webs, both small and large copepods are commonly present, but may have different life history strategies and hence different responses to environmental change. We investigated how contrasting summer sea-ice cover and water masses in the northern Barents Sea influenced the copepod community composition and secondary production of small and large copepods along a transect from 76°N to 83°N in August 2018 and August 2019. Bulk abundance, biomass, and secondary production of the total copepod community did not differ significantly between the two years. There were however significant spatial differences in the copepod community composition and production, with declining copepod abundance from Atlantic to Arctic waters and the highest copepod biomass and production on the Barents Sea shelf. The boreal Calanus finmarchicus showed higher abundance, biomass, and secondary production in the year with less sea-ice cover and at locations with a clear Atlantic water signal. Significant differences in the copepod community between areas in the two years could be attributed to interannual differences in sea-ice cover and Atlantic water inflow. Small copepods contributed more to secondary production in areas with no or little sea ice and their production was positively correlated to water temperature and ciliate abundance. Large copepods contributed more to secondary production in areas with extensive sea ice and their production was positively correlated with chlorophyll a concentration. Our results show how pelagic communities might function in a future ice-free Barents Sea, in which the main component of the communities are smaller copepods, and the secondary production they generate is available in energetically less resource-rich portions.

Abstract:Assessing the Arctic The Arctic is experiencing some of the most rapid climate change currently under way across the globe, but consequent ecological responses have not been widely reported. At the close of the Fourth International Polar Year, Post et al. (p. 1355 ) review observations on ecological impacts in this sensitive region. The widespread changes occurring in terrestrial, freshwater, and marine systems, presage changes at lower latitudes that will affect natural resources, food production, and future climate buffering.

Abstract:The Arctic climate is changing rapidly. The warming and resultant longer open water periods suggest a potential for expansion of marine vegetation along the vast Arctic coastline. We compiled and reviewed the scattered time series on Arctic marine vegetation and explored trends for macroalgae and eelgrass ( Zostera marina ). We identified a total of 38 sites, distributed between Arctic coastal regions in Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway/Svalbard, and Russia, having time series extending into the 21st Century. The majority of these exhibited increase in abundance, productivity or species richness, and/or expansion of geographical distribution limits, several time series showed no significant trend. Only four time series displayed a negative trend, largely due to urchin grazing or increased turbidity. Overall, the observations support with medium confidence (i.e., 5–8 in 10 chance of being correct, adopting the IPCC confidence scale) the prediction that macrophytes are expanding in the Arctic. Species distribution modeling was challenged by limited observations and lack of information on substrate, but suggested a current (2000–2017) potential pan-Arctic brown macroalgal distribution area of 655,111 km 2 (140,433 km 2 intertidal, 514,679 km 2 subtidal), representing an increase of about 45% for subtidal- and 8% for intertidal macroalgae since 1940–1950, and associated polar migration rates averaging 18–23 km decade –1 . Adjusting the potential macroalgal distribution area by the fraction of shores represented by cliffs halves the estimate (340,658 km 2 ). Warming and reduced sea ice cover along the Arctic coastlines are expected to stimulate further expansion of marine vegetation from boreal latitudes. The changes likely affect the functioning of coastal Arctic ecosystems because of the vegetation’s roles as habitat, and for carbon and nutrient cycling and storage. We encourage a pan-Arctic science- and management agenda to incorporate marine vegetation into a coherent understanding of Arctic changes by quantifying distribution and status beyond the scattered studies now available to develop sustainable management strategies for these important ecosystems.

Abstract:Albeit remote, Arctic benthic ecosystems are impacted by fisheries and climate change. Yet, anthropogenic impacts are poorly understood, as benthic ecosystems and their drivers have not been mapped over large areas. We disentangle spatial patterns and drivers of benthic epifauna (animals living on the seabed surface) in West Greenland, by integrating an extensive beam-trawl dataset (326 stations, 59-75°N, 30-1400 m water depth) with environmental data. We find high variability at different spatial scales: (1) Epifauna biomass decreases with increasing latitude, sea-ice cover and water depth, related to food limitation. (2) In Greenland, the Labrador Sea in the south shows higher epifauna taxon richness compared to Baffin Bay in the north. Τhe interjacent Davis Strait forms a permeable boundary for epifauna dispersal and a mixing zone for Arctic and Atlantic taxa, featuring regional biodiversity hotspots. (3) The Labrador Sea and Davis Strait provide suitable habitats for filter-feeding epifauna communities of high biomass e.g., sponges on the steep continental slope and sea cucumbers on shallow banks. In Baffin Bay, the deeper continental shelf, more gentle continental slope, lower current speed and lower phytoplankton biomass promote low-biomass epifauna communities, predominated by sea stars, anemones, or shrimp. (4) Bottom trawling reduces epifauna biomass and taxon richness throughout the study area, where sessile filter feeders are particularly vulnerable. Climate change with diminished sea ice cover in Baffin Bay may amplify food availability to epifauna, thereby increasing their biomass. While more species might expand northward due to the general permeability of Davis Strait, an extensive colonization of Baffin Bay by high-biomass filter-feeding epifauna remains unlikely, given the lack of suitable habitats. The pronounced vulnerability of diverse and biomass-rich epifauna communities to bottom trawling emphasizes the necessity for an informed and sustainable ecosystem-based management in the face of rapid climate change.

Abstract:Manifestations of climate change in the Arctic include an increase in water temperatures and massive loss of sea ice enabling more light penetration. Yet to understand tempo and scale of these parameters change over time, constant monitoring is needed. We present 16-yr long-term datasets of sea water temperature and relative light intensity at two depth strata (8 and 14 ± 1 m) of two hard-bottom sites in southern Isfjorden proper (Spitsbergen, 78°N). The high temporal resolution of the datasets (every 30 min, between 2006–2022) makes them suitable for studying changes at a local scale, correlating environmental variability with observed processes in benthic assemblages, and serving as ground-truth for comparison with, for example, remotely sensed or mooring data. These datasets serve as baseline for long-term investigations in the shallows of a high-Arctic fjord undergoing severe environmental changes.

Abstract:After a decade with nine of the lowest arctic sea-ice minima on record, including the historically low minimum in 2012, we synthesize recent developments in the study of ecological responses to sea-ice decline. Sea-ice loss emerges as an important driver of marine and terrestrial ecological dynamics, influencing productivity, species interactions, population mixing, gene flow, and pathogen and disease transmission. Major challenges in the near future include assigning clearer attribution to sea ice as a primary driver of such dynamics, especially in terrestrial systems, and addressing pressures arising from human use of arctic coastal and near-shore areas as sea ice diminishes.
