Abstract:In order to design new Ag(I)-based materials for thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), it is vital to develop a detailed understanding of the current best performing materials. The quantitative predictions of the photophysical processes of the Ag(dmp)(P2-nCB) TADF complex are calculated using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) combined with the path integral approach for dynamics including the Herzberg-Teller effects. All calculated results are in good agreement with the experimentally available data, demonstrating the validity of our applied theoretical approach. Analysis of ETS-NOCV (extended transition state natural orbital for chemical valence) shows that there is a weak bond interaction dominated by electrostatic interactions and accompanied by some covalent components between Ag(I) and dmp ligands due to the introduction of the strongly electron-donating negatively charged P2-nCB ligand, thus giving a small energy separation between the lowest singlet S1 and triplet T1 states of ΔE(S1 - T1) ≈ 532 cm-1. The SOC strongly depends on the geometrical alteration caused by the molecular "promotion" vibrations. Our study has revealed that a few "promotion" vibrational modes, that is, ω46 and ω227, effectively induce the strong SOC between S1 and T1 and speed up the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) process dramatically. The computed kRISC value is 1.19 × 107 s-1 for the solid phase at 300 K, which are about 5 orders of magnitude larger than the mean phosphorescence rate, kP = 9.56 × 102 s-1, and it is also far larger than ISC k0ISC = 7.84 × 102 s-1 rates from T1 to S0. The S1 state thus can be an efficient thermal repopulation from the T1 state by the RISC pathway. Finally, we also note that the diabatic vibration coupling triplet pair T1/T2 will also be important for efficient and practical RISC. Our investigation will be of great utility toward designing and improving the Ag(I)-based TADF complexes.
Investigation of Conversion and Decay Processes in Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Copper(I) Molecular Crystal: Theoretical Estimations from an ONIOM Approach Combined with the Tuned Range-Separated Density Functional Theory

Abstract:Accurate research of the photophysical processes is of great significance for the rational design of excellent thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. Herein, the interconversion and decay rates of the first excited singlet state (S1) and triplet states (T1) in the Cu(pop)(pz2BH2) complex are computed using the thermal vibration correlation function (TVCF) theory at different temperature. For consideration of the solid-state environment, a methodology that is based on the ONIOM model, combined with the optimally tuned range-separated hybrid functional (CAM-B3LYP*) method, was applied. Our calculated results are in excellent agreement with the experimentally available data. It has been found that the energy dissipation of the nonradiative processes from the S1 to ground state is promoted by low frequency vibrational modes in the solution phase, resulting in the high knr(S) = 1.68 × 108 s-1 at 300 K. However, for the crystal phase, they are easily hindered through intermolecular interactions, knr(S) is predicted to be decreased by about 5 orders of magnitude upon aggregation (2.98 × 103 s-1). With temperature increase, the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) rate kRISC from T1 to S1 is drastically increased to 6.12 × 104 s-1 at 300 K, while the change of other rates is still small, which can compete with the radiative decay rate of kr(T) = 4.75 × 104 s-1 and nonradiative intersystem crossing rate of kISC(T1-S0) = 6.63 × 102 s-1 at the T1 state. This implies that the S1 state can be an efficient thermal population from the T1 state, leading to an occurrence of delayed fluorescence, and the complexes exhibit high emission quantum yields, 58.7%. But, at low temperature T < 100 K, the RISC rate is sharply change, kRISC ≪ kr(T) or kISC, which cannot induce an occurrence of delayed fluorescence. Our investigation would be helpful for designing novel, high-efficiency TADF materials.

Abstract:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters are primarily comprised of intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) molecules with small energy difference between the lowest singlet and triplet excited states. They lend extremely favorable electroluminescent performance to organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). This paper summarizes relevant issues and research efforts in the theoretical prediction of singlet- and triplet-transition energies of ICT molecules via time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The successful application of the descriptor-based optimal Hartree–Fock percentage method and the optimally tuned range-separated functional to many TADF systems represent an interesting approach to the exact prediction of the complex excited-state molecular dynamics within TDDFT.

Abstract:Noble metal-free thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules have attracted great attention because they open up the possibility of realizing high efficiency and low-cost organic light-emitting diodes. The structure–property relationship of these unusual emitters has been gradually revealed through combined theoretical and experimental investigations in the last decade. It is now known that the luminescent properties of TADF molecules are governed by some basic physical parameters, including the energy levels of the lowest excited singlet (S1) and triplet (T1) states, the radiation and non-radiation rates at S1, and the intersystem crossing rates between S1 and T1. This chapter gives an introduction to the physical concepts of these parameters and their experimental determination. Dynamic relationships among these parameters are discussed in terms of excited state relaxation and solid-state solvation. Finally, a quantum chemistry approach to the prediction of these parameters based on reasonable geometric and electronic structures is provided.

Abstract:Quantitative understanding of the photophysical processes is essential for developing novel thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. Taking as an example 1,2,3,5-tetrakis(carbazol-9-yl)-4,6-dicyanobenzene, a typical TADF-active molecule, we calculated the interconversion and decay rates of the lowest excited singlet and triplet states at different temperatures as well as the prompt and delayed fluorescence efficiencies at 300 K at the first-principles level. Our results can reproduce well the experimentally available data. It is found that the reverse intersystem crossing rate (k(RISC)) is sharply increased by 3 orders of magnitude, while the other rates increase slightly or remain unchanged when the temperature rises from 77 to 300 K. Importantly, k(RISC) reaches up to 1.23 X 10(6) s(-1) and can compete with the radiative and nonradiative decay rates of S-1 (1.11 x 10(7) and 2.37 X 10(5) s(-1)) at 300 K, leading to an occurrence of delayed fluorescence. In addition, our calculations indicate that it is the freely rotational motions of the carbazolyl between two cyano groups that are responsible for the interconversion between S-1 and T-1. The large torsional barriers of other three adjacent carbazolyl groups block the nonradiative decay channels of S-1 -> S-0, leading to strong fluorescence. This work would provide useful insight into the molecular design of high-efficiency TADF emitters.

Abstract:Recently, thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules with aggregation induced emission (AIE) features have attracted much attention. However, the relationships between basic molecular structures and photophysical properties are unclear and corresponding theoretical investigations to reveal the inner AIE and TADF mechanisms are highly desired. Herein, excited state properties of three TADF molecules (CBM-DMAC, 3CPyM-PXZ and CBM-PXZ) are theoretically studied both in solution (tetrahydrofuran (THF)) and solid phase, respectively. Solvent environment in THF is considered by polarizable continuum model (PCM) and the molecules in solid phase are investigated by a combined quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) method. Luminescent properties are investigated by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations coupled with thermal vibration correction function (TVCF) method. Results show that asymmetrical molecules with donor(1)-acceptor-donor(2) (D1-A-D2) constructions are beneficial to obtain a small energy gap with well separated orbital distributions, and enhanced spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects are determined in solid phase, which confirm the TADF features. Furthermore, all studied molecules possess twisted molecular configurations, remarkable intermolecular C-H···π and C-H···O interactions can be observed in solid phase, which promotes the aggregation induced emission (AIE) and TADF properties. Moreover, geometrical changes between ground state (S0) and lowest singlet excited state (S1) states can be effectively hindered in solid phase, which brings the reduction of Huang-Rhys (HR) factor and reorganization energy compared with those in THF. Thus, non-radiative energy decay process is hindered and AIE mechanism is revealed. Our investigations are devoted to revealing the relationship between molecular structures and photophysical properties, AIE and TADF mechanisms are theoretically illustrated, which could facilitate the development of new efficient TADF emitters.

Toward an Accurate Description of Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence: Equal Importance of Electronic and Geometric Factors

Abstract:Obtaining reasonable geometric and electronic structures of excited states is essential for accurately predicting the thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) for the application in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Both electronic and geometric factors are evaluated using density functionals for reproducing the vertical emission (E-VE(S-1)) and singlet-triplet splitting energies (Delta E-ST) of 28 typical TADF molecules. It is found that most TADF molecules (charge-transfer type) can easily twist upon excitation, indicating the importance of constructing a rigid molecular structure for improving the performance of TADF OLEDs. Functionals with insufficient exact exchange will result in the substantial underestimation of the relaxation energy of T-1, suggesting that the hybrid functionals such as B3LYP should not be used. Overall, the best approach for calculating E-VE(S-1) and Delta E-ST is the descriptor-tuned LC-omega PBELOL functional combining the CAM-B3LYP-optimized excited-state geometries, which shows mean absolute deviations of 0.21 and 0.10 eV, respectively.

Abstract:In terms of the molecular design for thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), the high degree of spatial separation of frontier molecular orbitals can be achieved through constructing cofacial donor-acceptor alignment in a through-space charge transfer (TSCT) framework. When extremely low Delta E-ST is realized, TSCT-TADF molecules still suffer a low radiative transition rate (k(r)) of the emissive TSCT state. Compact TSCT-TADF emitters, mCz-Xo-TRZ and dCz-Xo-TRZ, have been reported, showing a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) with large k(r). To explore the physical mechanism of high PLQY and large k(r) in the TSCT conformation, comprehensive theoretical calculations on geometries, excitation energies, transition character, strong and weak electronic coupling, and vibration analysis on structural reorganization accompanied by time-resolved spectroscopy were applied to illustrate the electronic coupling mechanism in the compact and rigid TSCT framework and reveal the limited structural relaxation contributing to the nonradiative dissipation in excited states. This work contributes a deep understanding of the electronic interaction mechanism in TSCT molecular frameworks and provides theoretical guidance for the rational design of TSCT luminescent materials.

Abstract:An investigation of high-performance organic green thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) material, PyB-DPAC, with aggregation-induced luminescence (AIE) characteristics was theoretically conducted by the first principle calculations method in this work. The polarizable continuum mode (PCM) and the combination of quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) method were employed to consider the liquid-phase and solid-phase environments, respectively. Results show that TADF mechanism of the molecule is mainly due to the occurrence of efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) and reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) processes between S 1 and T 2 , which benefits from the small energy gap, large SOC and the limited changes of molecular geometry structures in solid-phase environment. The increase of radiative transition rate ( K r ) and significant decrease of non-radiative transition rate ( K nr ) is responsible for the AIE property. Our calculations reasonably explained the experimental results and showed that PyB-DPAC is an excellent TADF material with AIE characteristics, this may help to better understand the influence of solid-state effect and the luminescence mechanism of AIE-TADF molecules.

Abstract:Multifunctional TADF molecules have attracted significant attention from the field. In this work the luminescence mechanisms of TADF-AIE molecules DMAC-TRZ, PFDMAC-TRZ and DPFDMAC-TRZ in distinct aggregation states were investigated using QM/MM method and MD simulations. Results show that the AIE property was confirmed by comparing the luminescence properties in different aggregation states, where the molecule aggregates with its enhanced radiation rate and reduced non-radiation rate. In addition, the aggregation state reduces the △E S1-T1 , and enhances the SOC, thus increasing the k (R)ISC . The computational results provide valuable information for understanding the luminescence mechanism of molecules with TADF-AIE properties.

Abstract:Issue concerning accurate prediction of the reverse intersystem crossing rate (kRISC ) is critical for developing novel efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. In this contribution, the kRISC rates from the lowest excited triplet T1 state to the lowest excited singlet S1 state were evaluated for five donor-π-acceptor-type pyrimidine-based TADF emitters using the semiclassical Marcus theory. Both the singlet-triplet energy difference (ΔEST ) and spin-orbit coupling (V) between the S1 and T1 states were investigated by performing the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. In addition, their fluorescence emission wavelengths (λem ) were also calculated at the TD-DFT level. The predicted kRISC and λem values are found to reproduce well the available experimental findings. The present results reveal that the kRISC rates of molecules possessing the unsymmetrical diphenyl pyrimidine acceptor core are calculated to be slightly larger than those of their analogues with the symmetrical diphenyl pyrimidine. In addition, introducing two tert-butyl groups into the 2,7-positions of the donor moiety of the latter is also an effective method for increasing kRISC when designing TADF emitters. Such a difference is related to the nature of the T1 excited state. A more remarkable charge-transfer (CT) contribution to the state can achieve a smaller ΔEST , leading to a more efficient RISC process, and consequently a shorter delayed fluorescence lifetime as observed experimentally. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Molecular Configuration Fixation with C–H···F Hydrogen Bonding for Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Acceleration

Abstract:The conflict between improving reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) and singlet radiation is one of the key fundamental issues for thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. Here, we demonstrate that the excited-state structural relaxation can be effectively suppressed through fixing the molecular configuration with intramolecular C–H···F hydrogen bonds. The resulted TADF emitter 7CzFDCF 3DPh reveals the nearly identical ground state, the first singlet (S 1) and triplet (T 1) excited-state configurations. Therefore, the singlet-triplet energy gap is reduced to <0.06 eV, establishing the multiple RISC channels through either electronic or vibrational couplings. 7CzFDCF 3DPh reveals a state-of-the-art RISC rate constant ( kRISC) of ~10 6 s −1, accompanied by the doubled RISC efficiency ( φRISC) as high as 97%. The dramatically accelerated TADF renders the photoluminescence and electroluminescence quantum efficiencies more than 90% and 20% for 7CzFDCF 3DPh. These results manifest the significance of the configuration fixation for improving TADF performance.

Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence from Locally Excited State: Theoretical Prediction and Experimental Validation

Abstract:As is well known, the thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is always generated from charge-transfer (CT) excited states in electron-donor (D) – electron-acceptor (A) systems. Here, a novel design strategy is proposed for realizing TADF from a locally excited (LE) state through controlling the intersystem crossing (ISC) and reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) processes between the LE singlet and higher triplet CT states. Based on the strategy, a boron difluoride derivative is theoretically predicted to emit TADF from the LE state, whose radiative decay rate constant is much larger kr (S1 →S0 )=1.12 * 108 s -1 , two orders of magnitude larger than those of common TADF systems. And its lifetimes of the prompt and delayed fluorescence are experimentally validated to be 0.44 ns and 0.7 μs, respectively. This work is a breakthrough in the understanding of TADF and opens a new avenue for extending the TADF materials.

Abstract:The mechanism of aggregation‐induced delayed fluorescence of CP‐BP‐PXZ is disclosed in this article. Both reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) and the subsequent transition process are regulated via aggregation. The promoted RISC can be ascribed to the increased effective channels. Meanwhile, the enhanced kr due to higher oscillator strength as well as inhibited kic under suppressed Duschinsky rotation effect (DRE) also contribute to emitting delayed fluorescence. Purely organic fluorescence emitters with ultrahigh exciton utilization, such as thermally‐activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials, are pursued as the cornerstone of the new‐generation organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, most TADF emitters suffer from the dilemma of the aggregation‐caused fluorescence quenching effects, severely limiting their applications. Excitingly, the recently proposed aggregation‐induced delayed fluorescence (AIDF) strategy holds the potential to tackle this problem thoroughly. Here, the recently reported AIDF emitters CP‐BP‐PXZ and its halogenated counterparts, 3‐CCP‐BP‐PXZ and 3‐BCP‐BP‐PXZ, are investigated with a united theoretical and experimental insight. Based on first‐principles calculations combined with the polarizable continuum model (PCM) and the quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) model, the photophysical mechanisms of these novel materials are proposed. It is found that both reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) and the subsequent radiative transition of CP‐BP‐PXZ are promoted via aggregation, owing to the increased effective RISC channels and boosted oscillator strength. Meanwhile, the unfavorable internal conversion rate is greatly slumped, ascribed to the suppressed Duschinsky rotation effect (DRE). The unique heavy‐atom effect is disclosed in 3‐CCP‐BP‐PXZ and 3‐BCP‐BP‐PXZ that the halogens act as steric blockers in crystal, rather than spin–orbit coupling enhancers. It is hoped that this work can shed new light on the designation of high‐efficient solid‐state fluorescence emitters.

Abstract:The solid-state effect plays an important role in excited-state dynamics and luminescence properties of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. Here, the luminescent mechanism of two novel TADF emitters, PPZTPI and PPZPPI, with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) features are theoretically studied based on the first-principles calculations. The polarisable continuum model (PCM) and the combined quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) method are used to simulate the solvent environments in toluene and the solid-state effects, respectively. Our results show that both PPZTPI and PPZPPI exhibit excellent TADF and AIE properties with similar but not identical luminescence mechanisms. In the solid state, the delayed fluorescence emission of the two molecules mainly depends on the two-step reverse intersystem crossing process. The molecular radiation rates increase by 1–2 orders of magnitude due to the enhancement of intermolecular interactions in the aggregation. For PPZTPI, the solid-state environment exerts a greater influence on the molecular geometry and electronic structure, non-radiative transitions, excited state dynamics, and emission mechanism due to the substitution of tert-butyl groups and their induced steric hindrance effects. Our theoretical study reasonably elucidates the experimental results and provides valuable information for designing high-efficient AIE-TADF emitters. GRAPHICAL

Abstract:Organic afterglow materials have emerged as an important class of luminescent materials. These afterglow systems feature small rate constants of key photophysical processes, such as phosphorescence decay and nonradiative decay of triplet excited states. When coupled to other photophysical processes, these afterglow systems would give rise to intriguing photophysical behaviors. Here we report the transformation of afterglow mechanism from room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) to thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) in intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) systems. Detailed studies reveal that the increase of the acceptor strength of ICT molecules can reduce singlet-triplet splitting energy and consequently open reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) pathway with moderate k RISC of 1–10 s −1 to harvest triplet energies, leading to the RTP-to-TADF afterglow transformation. Such observations provide deep understanding on the behaviors of organic triplets with small photophysical rate constants. Besides, these organic ICT molecules have been incorporated into aqueous emulsion systems to exhibit promising applications.

Abstract:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters with through space charge transfer (TSCT) have been attracting great attention owing to their unique characteristics and potential applications in organic light-emitting diodes. In this study, five TSCT TADF emitters based on spiro[acridine-fluorene] donor have been investigated in detail using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations. The results indicate that five emitters exhibit cofacial orientations between acridine donor and acceptor units, leading to the well-separated HOMO and LUMO and small singlet-triplet energy gaps (Δ E ST ) (less than 0.20 eV). The lowest singlet excited state (S 1 ) and lowest triplet excited state (T 1 ) are characterized to be the mixed charge transfer (CT) and local excitation (LE) natures, which ensures strong oscillator strength of S 1 state and triggers high radiative rates over 10 6 s -1 . Importantly, the obvious differences in the CT component between S 1 and T 1 states lead to significantly strong spin-orbit coupling, especially for SAF-XT, SAF-Q and SAF-Qx , reaching 3.93, 2.17, and 4.26 cm −1 , respectively, resulting in high reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) rates up to 4.4 × 10 6 s -1 , which endow them with great potential to be efficient TSCT-TADF emitters. Our calculation results would be beneficial to enriching the TSCT-TADF emitters.

Abstract:Balancing the rapid radiative decay process and the fast reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) process of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecule remains a great challenge and efficient molecular design strategies are highly desired. Herein, from a theoretical perspective, excited state properties of three reported TADF molecules (1TICz, 1BOICz and 2BOICz) are investigated based on density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations coupled with the thermal vibration correlation function (TVCF) method. Results indicate that, by introducing the multi-resonance (MR) acceptor, 1BOICz possesses hybrid long-range and short-range charge transfer features, balanced small energy gap (ΔE ST ) and large oscillator strength ( f ) is obtained. Furthermore, by incorporating double equivalent MR acceptors in 2BOICz, largely enhanced f with slightly changed ΔE ST is achieved, inner mechanism for remarkable photophysical property is illustrated. Keep this strategy, seven new TADF molecules (2pDBA-bICz-1, 2pDBA-bICz-2, 2OSBA-bICz, 2DQAO-bICz, 2QAO-bICz, 2SQAO-bICz and 2OQAO-bICz) are theoretically designed, detailed physical parameters are analyzed and excited state energy consumption process is studied. Strong electrophilicity on acceptor is determined and the strength of nucleophilic sites on the bridge-phenyl of 2DQAO-bICz, 2QAO-bICz, 2SQAO-bICz and 2OQAO-bICz is increased, this promotes the short-range charge transfer property. In addition, the excitation processes for all studied molecules are dominated by long-range charge transfer from donor to acceptors, and supplemented by the short-range charge transfer on the bridge-phenyl with MR effect. Compromise energy gap and oscillator strength as well as large spin orbit coupling (SOC) constant are obtained for designed molecules. Thus, by regulating the long-range and short-range charge transfer ratios, excited state properties are successfully modulated and new efficient TADF molecules are proposed. Our research aims to provide deeper insight into long-range and short-range charge transfer features in balancing small ΔE ST and large f , which could facilitate the development of novel efficient TADF molecules.

Abstract:Two‐coordinate Cu (I) complexes have attracted great interest recently because of the rich photophysical property in solid state, including the aggregation‐induced thermal activated delayed fluorescence. Here, we summarize our theoretical investigations on the excited state structure and decay dynamics for the two‐coordinate Cu (I) complexes in solution phase and solid state by the thermal vibration correlation function rate formalism we developed earlier coupled with time‐dependent density‐functional theory within polarizable continuum model and hybrid quantum and molecular mechanics. First, for the CAACCu (I)Cl complex, we found that the nature of the excited state undergoes a change from metal‐to‐ligand charge transfer (MLCT) in solution to hybrid halogen‐to‐ligand charge transfer and MLCT in solid state. The bending vibrations of the CCuCl and CuCN bonds are restricted in aggregates, reducing the non‐radiative decay rate to cause strong solid‐state fluorescence. Second, for CAACCu (I)Cz, we found that both intersystem crossing (ISC) and reverse intersystem crossing (rISC) are enhanced by 2–4 orders of magnitudes upon aggregation, leading to highly efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). The enhanced ISC and rISC rates can be attributed to the increase of the metal proportion in the frontier molecular orbitals, leading to an enhanced spin−orbit coupling between S 1 and T 1. The reaction barriers for ISC and rISC are much lower in solution than that in aggregate phase resulting in a decrease in energy gap and an increase in the relative reorganization energy through bending the angle ∠C − Cu − N for T 1 . Our theoretical studies provide a clear rationalization for the highly efficient solid‐state luminescence character of two‐coordinate Cu (I) complexes and may clarify the ongoing dispute on the understanding of the high TADF quantum efficiency.
