Abstract:A modeling system that couples a land-usebased export coefficient model, a stream nutrient transport equation, and Bayesian statistics was developed for stream nitrogen source apportionment. It divides a watershed into several sub-catchments, and then considers the major landuse categories as stream nitrogen sources in each subcatchment. The runoff depth and stream water depth are considered as the major factors influencing delivery of nitrogen from land to downstream stream node within each sub-catchment. The nitrogen sources and delivery processes are lumped into several constant parameters that were calibrated using Bayesian statistics from commonly available stream monitoring and land-use datasets. This modeling system was successfully applied to total nitrogen (TN) pollution control scheme development for the ChangLe River watershed containing six sub-catchments and four land-use categories. The temporal (across months and years) and spatial (across sub-catchments and land-use categories) variability of nonpoint source (NPS) TN export to stream channels and delivery to the watershed outlet were assessed. After adjustment for in-stream TNretention, the time periods and watershed areas with disproportionately high-TN contributions to the stream were identified. Aimed at a target stream TN level of 2 mg L-1, a quantitative TN pollution control scheme was further developed to determine which sub-catchments, which land-use categories in a sub-catchment, which time periods, and how large of NPS TN export reduction were required. This modeling system provides a powerful tool for stream nitrogen source apportionment and pollution control scheme development at the watershed scale and has only limited data requirements.

Abstract:Urban sewer networks (SNs) are increasingly facing water quality issues as a result of many challenges, such as population growth, urbanization and climate change. A promising way to addressing these issues is by developing and using water quality models. Many of these models have been developed in recent years to facilitate the management of SNs. Given the proliferation of different water quality models and the promise they have shown, it is timely to assess the state-of-the-art in this field, to identify potential challenges and suggest future research directions. In this review, model types, modeled quality parameters, modeling purpose, data availability, type of case studies and model performance evaluation are critically analyzed and discussed based on a review of 110 papers published between 2010 and 2019. The review identified that applications of empirical and kinetic models dominate those of data-driven models for addressing water quality issues. The majority of models are developed for prediction and process understanding using experimental or field sampled data. While many models have been applied to real problems, the corresponding prediction accuracies are overall moderate or, in some cases, low, especially when dealing with larger SNs. The review also identified the most common issues associated with water quality modeling of SNs and based on these proposed several future research directions. These include the identification of appropriate data resolutions for the development of different SN models, the need and opportunity to develop hybrid SN models and the improvement of SN model transferability.
An Inversed Bayesian Modeling Approach for Estimating Nitrogen Export Coefficients and Uncertainty Assessment in an Agricultural Watershed in Eastern China

Abstract:Quantification information for nonpoint source pollution is required to develop a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) at the watershed scale. All export coefficient models and some complex mechanistic models rely on the pollutant export coefficients to quantify and identify nonpoint source pollution. Typically, pollutant export coefficients are estimated by monitoring field plots or small catchments with a single land-use or by monitoring and statistically analyzing mixed land-use watersheds. However, these approaches underestimate export coefficients by neglecting in-stream pollutant retention and they also neglect spatio-temporal variability for export coefficients within a watershed. In addition, these methods do not address the uncertainty associated with estimations. This study combined the export coefficient model, a stream pollutant load model and a Bayesian statistical method to inversely estimate pollutant export coefficients for multiple land-use types from commonly available stream monitoring data. The efficacy of this inversed Bayesian modeling approach was confirmed by determining total nitrogen (TN) export coefficients for farmland, residential land and woodland for six catchments of the ChangLe River watershed in eastern China covering 72 field observation dates in 2004-2009. In-stream retention processes were considered in estimating TN export coefficients. The temporal (across 72 field observation dates) and spatial (across 6 catchments) variability of TN export coefficients for each land-use type within the watershed are discussed, as well as the uncertainties associated with TN export coefficient estimation. This inversed Bayesian modeling approach overcomes the shortcomings involved in current widely used approaches for estimating pollutant export coefficients; thus it can more efficiently support development of TMDL programs, particularly in circumstance where limited data are available. [A Review on Non-Point Source Pollution Models].

Abstract:With the effective control of point source pollution, the non-point source pollution (NPSP) of water environment has been paid more and more attention, and NPSP models are thriving with the development of 3S technology. This paper made a brief introduction about the classification and evolution of NPSP models. Ten NPSP models commonly used abroad were selected and compared, with their software developers and providers, data input and output, pollutant- and sediment types, time scale, simulation progress and characteristics, and model types illustrated. Based on the model applications and related literature reports, a qualitative evaluation was made from the viewpoint of the suitability of NPSP models to different watershed situation. Finally, the existing research insufficiency was analyzed, and the future development trend of non-point research was discussed, which would be helpful to the development of NPSP models and their applications in water management in China.
[Review of Urban Nonpoint Source Pollution Models].

Abstract:The development history of urban nonpoint source pollution models is reviewed. Features, applicability and limitations of seven popular urban nonpoint source pollution models (SWMM, STORM, SLAMM, HSPF, DR3M-QUAL, MOUSE, and HydroWorks) are discussed. The methodology and research findings of uncertainty in urban nonpoint source pollution modeling are presented. Analytical probabilistic models for estimation of urban nonpoint sources are also presented. The research achievements of urban nonpoint source pollution models in China are summarized. The shortcomings and gaps of approaches on urban nonpoint source pollution models are pointed out. Improvements in modeling of pollutants buildup and washoff, sediments and pollutants transport, and pollutants biochemical reactions are desired for those seven popular models. Most of the models developed by researchers in China are empirical models, so that they can only applied for specific small areas and have inadequate accuracy. Future approaches include improving capability in fate and transport simulation of sediments and pollutants, exploring methodologies of modeling urban nonpoint source pollution in regions with little data or incomplete information, developing stochastic models for urban nonpoint source pollution simulation, and applying GIS to facilitate urban nonpoint source pollution simulation.
A review of diffuse pollution modeling and associated implications for watershed management in China

Abstract:PurposeDiffuse pollution has been extensively studied in China from loading assessments to watershed management, which are important in international research. However, few studies that assess the advances of diffuse pollution modeling and studies of trace diffuse pollutants have been conducted. The adaption and development of imported model systems based on local observations and climatic features have improved study skills and presented unique characteristics. In addition to traditional diffuse pollutants (e.g., nitrogen and phosphorus), modeling trace heavy metals and pesticide also provides insights for watershed management.Materials and methodsWe reviewed existing literature on diffuse pollution model applications and developments in China, attempting to provide a better understanding of the advances of diffuse pollution and new research directions for pollution modeling.Results and discussionDiverse methods have been adopted to express diffuse pollution formation, transport and environmental impacts using modeling as an effective tool for developing management guidelines in China. Model applications at different temporal–spatial scales, development of diffuse pollution modeling for emerging pollutants, and impacts of diffuse pollution on water quality in China were analyzed. Pollution loading decreased from east to west, coinciding with farmland distributions, tillage intensity, and economic levels. The temporal patterns of pollution loading have increased in recent decades due to increased fertilizer additions and climate warming which has put more pressure on water quality. This analysis indicated that enhancing existing models, with more field observations, is key for future diffuse pollution studies of trace organic pollutants and heavy metals. Establishing national databases and validating standard model parameters are essential and currently weak points at the national scale with respect to diffuse pollution modeling.ConclusionsDiffuse pollution has become a challenging issue in watershed management, and agricultural diffuse pollution poses the greatest risk to watershed management in China. However, the mechanisms involved in trace pollutant transport and the environmental consequences of these pollutants are largely unknown in China, where complicated tillage methods are used and climatic conditions vary throughout the country. Accumulated field observations at diverse temporal–spatial scales are important to accurately model and perform water risk assessments.

Abstract:Water pollution poses threats to urban environments and subsequently impacts the ecological health and sustainable development of urban areas. Identifying the spatiotemporal variation in non-point sources (NPS) pollution is a prerequisite for improving water quality. This paper aimed to assess the NPS pollution load and then recognized the spatiotemporal characteristics of the pollution sources in a typical urbanized area. A combination model based on land use type was used to simulate the NPS pollution load. The results showed the following: (1) ponds and farmlands had higher pollution production intensities than other land use types, but the intensity and magnitude of pollution emissions were generally greater in urban areas; (2) monthly and annual total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) emissions had the same pattern as rainfall, and TN and TP emissions accounted for 56.2% and 58.0%, respectively, of the total in summer; (3) TN pollution was more serious than TP pollution in the study area, especially in farmlands; (4) urban runoff (UR) and livestock and poultry breeding (LPB) were the main sources of NPS, TN and TP emissions in the study area. If these NPS pollutants cannot be removed from this area, a large amount of freshwater is needed to dilute the current rivers to meet the requirement of the fourth category of China national environmental quality standards for surface water. This problem is serious in the control of polluted rivers in many cities throughout China.

Abstract:Agricultural non-point-source (NPS) pollution is regarded as the dominant contributor to water quality degradation and eutrophication in China. Nitrogen (N) is a primary source of pollution in fresh water bodies. In this work a linear programming model was developed to simulate the effectiveness of different nitrogen runoff control policies, using Pinghu City in Tai Lake valley as an example. Four policy scenarios were tested: a tax at a rate equivalent to 50% of the cost of nitrogen fertilizer (S1); a ban on summer fertilizer applications to make the most use of fertilizer applied in the spring (S2); mandatory substitution of regular fertilizers by controlled-release fertilizers (S3); and a subsidy of US$300 ha −1 (RMB¥150 mu −1 ) for using compost (S4). The results indicate that all four policies would effectively reduce nitrogen runoff—by 9.8, 26.8, 14.4, and 80.0%, respectively. A subsidy for recycling domestic animal manure and utilizing compost had the most significant effect on the reduction of nitrogen runoff without reducing household income. This research suggests that measures to control agricultural NPS pollution should be combined with a policy to promote recycling of bio-resources and that financial support for NPS pollution control combined with bio-resource recycling should be regarded as one aspect of public investment in regional sustainable development.
Capturing spatiotemporal heterogeneity in fertilizer application for better modelling paddy water nitrogen and phosphorus pollution at regional scale

Abstract:Accurately simulating paddy water nitrogen and phosphorus (N/P) concentration is crucial for identifying key control areas of agricultural non-point source pollution (ANPSP), especially in the paddy-dominated regions. In China, smallholder farming has resulted in significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity in fertilizer application date/amount among different fields at the regional scale. However, due to the lack of realistic fertilizer application date/amount data at field scale, previous regional scale models have employed uniform fertilization management, neglecting spatiotemporal heterogeneity in fertilizer application date/amount. This has led to significant uncertainties in assessing paddy water N/P pollution at the regional scale. To address this issue, we developed a new model (PWNPRS) for simulating spatiotemporal hotspots of paddy water N/P pollution, based on remote sensing and a first-order kinetic model: (1) we developed a quantitative assessment method for fertilizer application date/amount based on phenological/vegetation information extracted from remote sensing datasets; (2) we modified and improved the first-order kinetic model by incorporating fertilizer application date/amount to predict paddy water N/P concentration at the regional scale. The spatiotemporal fluctuations of fertilizer application date/amount and paddy water N/P pollution were simulated by using the developed model in a paddy-dominated regions in Danyang, China, as a case study for model validation. The models performances and spatiotemporal evaluation indicate that the PWNPRS model is an innovative and promising approach to accurately capture the spatiotemporal pattern of fertilizer application date/amount and paddy water N/P concentration at the regional scale. The PWNPRS model can be extended to other paddy-dominated regions for N/P concentration prediction under data-limited conditions. Our model considers the interactive effects of fertilization date/amount and N/P concentration attenuation rates, allowing it to capture the dynamic spatiotemporal variations in paddy water N/P concentrations at a regional scale. Simultaneously, a robust and accurate model provide a theoretical basis for optimizing agricultural ecological management.

Abstract:Two main types of pollution sources of surface wat ers can be generally characterized as point and nonpoint (i.e. diffuse) sources. While point sources are for the most part relatively well characterized and controlled, nonpoint sources become more and more important and are being increasingly recognized as significant aquatic pollution sources. This paper reviewed the research status of the hydrological models and nonpoint pollution models, analysed some famous and commonly-used models such as CREAMS, GLEAMS, HSPF, ANSWERS, AGNPS, etc., then discussed the significance, levels and methods of integrating RS, GIS and nonpoint pollution models. The authors also elucidated 3 levels of the integration: ①The basic level—establishing the database for the nonpoint sources based on GIS;②The second level—integrating the RS and GIS with nonpoint pollution models, such as parameter estimation, visualization for simulation results using GIS; ③The third level—establishing the comprehensive and integrated simulation system based on RS and GIS. Finally four aspects of the prospects and trends of nonpoint pollution models are analysed:①Establishing the integrated simulation system which can describe interactions between atmospheric, hydrological processes and water quality responses.②Establishing the nonpoint pollution model system based on GIScience.③Focusing on the research of nonpoint pollution simulation in the plain catchment area.④Focusing on the toxic pollutants such as VOCs, PAH, PCBs, etc., in the nonpoi nt pollution simulation.

Abstract:Excessive nitrogen (N) discharge from agriculture causes widespread problems in aquatic ecosystems. Knowledge of spatiotemporal patterns and source attribution of N pollution is critical for nutrient management programs but is poorly studied in headwaters with various small water bodies and mini-point pollution sources. Taking a typical small watershed in the low mountains of Southeastern China as an example, N pollution and source attribution were studied for a multipond system around a village using the Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF) model. The results exhibited distinctive spatio-seasonal variations with an overall seriousness rank for the three indicators: total nitrogen (TN) > nitrate/nitrite nitrogen (NOx−-N) > ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), according to the Chinese Surface Water Quality Standard. TN pollution was severe for the entire watershed, while NOx−-N pollution was significant for ponds and ditches far from the village, and the NH3-N concentrations were acceptable except for the ponds near the village in summer. Although food and cash crop production accounted for the largest source of N loads, we discovered that mini-point pollution sources, including animal feeding operations, rural residential sewage, and waste, together contributed as high as 47% of the TN and NH3-N loads in ponds and ditches. So, apart from eco-fertilizer programs and concentrated animal feeding operations, the importance of environmental awareness building for resource management is highlighted for small farmers in headwater agricultural watersheds. As a first attempt to incorporate multipond systems into the process-based modeling of nonpoint source (NPS) pollution, this work can inform other hydro-environmental studies on scattered and small water bodies. The results are also useful to water quality improvement for entire river basins.

Abstract:Agricultural non-point source pollution is a kind of complex process with the characteristics of intermittent, random, sudden and uncertain emergence. Thus, the modeling study is an important content in the field of non-point source pollution at all times. This paper reviews the development of the prediction model of agricultural non-point source pollution, briefly illustrates the function and research advances of foreign agricultural non-point source models at the field scale and watershed scale, discusses the prediction, model development and available problems of non-point source pollution in China. It is proposed that the study of pollutant transport and prediction model should be based on the point of view of integrated agricultural production and water environmental protection. And one of main contents of non-point source pollution is to consider the uncertain characteristics of non-point source pollution and to combine 3S techniques with non-point source model.

Abstract:In the 1980s, China began to recognize the gravity of the problem of non-point agricultural source pollution and conduct research on it. Agricultural non-point source pollution in China, on the other hand, differs from foreign agricultural non-point source pollution and industrial point source pollution. Because the features of agricultural non-point source pollution are complicated, it is critical to investigate a whole-chain management policy system appropriate for China's agricultural pattern. Based on the current situation of agricultural non-point source pollution in China, this study summarizes the four stages of agricultural non-point source pollution prevention and control policies, namely the discovery stage with macro policies as the main focus, the exploration stage with single research indicators, the initial systematic strengthening stage, and the focused stage with targeted characteristics. Simultaneously, it examined the technological approaches that are suitable for China's national circumstances and have been investigated by relying on international experience in present-day Chinese management. However, there are still some problems and challenges in agricultural non-point source pollution management policies, such as a lack of non-point source information support, a lack of coordination between different departments, a lack of support in measurement and retroactive calculation and treatment, a lack of an in-depth concept of zoning and classification, a lack of policy, an institutional system, and insufficient capital investment. Based on these problems and combining them with Green Agriculture, Beautiful China, and other goals, this paper puts forward suggestions to strengthen the policy data support of the agricultural non-point source pollution management system, enhance the research and development of the law of pollutant migration and transformation, encourage the innovation of low-cost and high-benefit treatment technology, improve the construction of the management system, strengthen the collaboration of departments, increase the investment of funds, and make other suggestions so as to promote the treatment of agricultural non-point source pollution with high quality and efficiency.

Quantitative assessment for the effects of non-point source pollution loads on water environment of plain area

Abstract:The non-point source (NPS) is the main cause of surface water pollution in Taihu Lake basin in southeast China, therefore the quantitative analysis for the effects of NPS on water environment is the vital basis for water pollution control in the area. Surface water quality models, with the emphasis on the spatial and temporal changes of pollutants, are the most important tools for watershed environment management planning, which provide scientific basis for assessment and control of NPS pollution of watershed environment. However, because of the characteristics of the generation of agricultural NPS pollution loads, its spatial and temporal distribution was averaged in water quality simulating for a long time, which reduced the precision of prediction and the feasibility of real-time forecasting. In water quality simulation, the spatial and temporal distribution of agricultural NPS pollution loads can be determined based on the concept of catchment area of unit river length. When the time scale of calculation is relatively long (e.g. yearly), pollutant load of non-point source can also be averaged annually and put into segments; and when it is relatively short, pollutant load can be distributed based on storm duration. This paper presented the methods of agricultural NPS pollution loads estimation and its spatial and temporal distribution for the plain area watershed. The estimation of NPS pollution load involves the characteristics of runoff pollution loads from different land uses, such as dry land, paddy-field, urban areas etc. In this paper, Suzhou is taken as a case study, for there are so many rivers and streams, which form a complex stream-net. The result of the case study showed that the represented empirical formula for estimation of NPS is feasible. The method of spatial and temporal distribution of NPS pollution loads based on the concept of catchment area of unit river length can improve the prediction precision of water quality models, as well as make it possible for real-time water quality simulation in the plain area. © copyright ASCE 2005.

Abstract:Understanding the influence of cropping systems on non-point source pollution (NPSP) is crucial, since NPSP has become the major nutrient source of lake eutrophication. How to identify the characteristics of the N and P balance at different spatial and temporal scales remains a challenge in pollution control and decision-making. In this study, we built a soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) model coupled with an export coefficient model for a NPSP simulation in the North of Erhai Lake Basin (NELB). A method was proposed to study the N and P transport from fields and the individual sub-basins to Erhai Lake using SWAT simulation. The results showed that the N and P loss fields were mainly situated in the vicinity of the Fengyu river and along the mainstream of the Miju and Mici rivers. N and P loss fields were mainly occupied by rice–broad bean/rice–rapeseed crops and vegetables. While the critical N and P load contribution areas were situated in the vicinity of downstream of the Miju, Yong'an, and Luoshi rivers. The effects of different cropping systems on the N and P export to the watershed were insignificant in the NELB and decreased by 4–9% when changing cropping system compared to the original crops. The NPSP discharged from the critical areas was retained and purified by the flow and the reservoirs scattered along the rivers, and it was noticed that the N and P loss was mainly from the critical pollution discharge areas located downstream of Miju river. This study can provide an important simulation method for understanding NPSPs and, therefore, can help authorities improve agricultural land use and reduce lake pollution.

Abstract:With the effective control of industrial wastewater, pollution of non-point sources has become increasingly important in China. The understanding of non-point source pollution processes, mostly through mathematical models, is thus a prior knowledge to its effective control. A review is presented in this paper, regarding the development of non-point source pollution models. The conceptualization, structure and major processes of non-point source models are systematically summarized and several widely applied models are compared so as to assess its state of art. The future development trends of non-point source model are also discussed.

Abstract:Watershed water environment pollution model is the important tool for studying watershed environmental problems. Through the quantitative description of the complicated pollution processes of whole watershed system and its parts, the model can identify the main sources and migration pathways of pollutants, estimate the pollutant loadings, and evaluate their impacts on water environment, providing a basis for watershed planning and management. This paper reviewed the watershed water environment models widely applied at home and abroad, with the focuses on the models of pollutants loading (GWLF and PLOAD), water quality of received water bodies (QUAL2E and WASP), and the watershed models integrated pollutant loadings and water quality (HSPF, SWAT, AGNPS, AnnAGNPS, and SWMM), and introduced the structures, principles, and main characteristics as well as the limitations in practical applications of these models. The other models of water quality (CE-QUAL-W2, EFDC, and AQUATOX) and watershed models (GLEAMS and MIKE SHE) were also briefly introduced. Through the case analysis on the applications of single model and integrated models, the development trend and application prospect of the watershed water environment pollution models were discussed.
Identifying the Spatial Risk Patterns of Agricultural Non-Point Source Pollution in a Basin of the Upper Yangtze River

Abstract:Agricultural non-point source pollution (ANPSP) is a primary cause of watershed water quality deterioration, and over 50% of NPS pollutants are estimated to come from ANPSP. Based on the “source-sink” theory and minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) model, ANPSP source and key resistance factors were integrated to identify areas at risk of ANPSP production and transportation into the waters of the upper Yangtze River basin. The results showed a spatial difference in the agricultural pollution sources of the basin, which were determined using both ANPSP loads and land-use types. Soil type, rainfall erosivity, and elevation were the three most important resistance factors in pollution transportation, weighting 0.373, 0.241, and 0.147, respectively. There was a spatial effect on the comprehensive resistance of ANPSP transportation, which was lower in mountainous terrain at the central basin. On the coupling of source and resistance processes, regions at serious risk of ANPSP were found to be concentrated in the southwest area. Areas at very high risk of NH3-N and TP pollution accounted for 37.6% and 38.1%, respectively, in the total town/street area. The spatial risk patterns identified in this study could be used for decision making and policy regulation of ANPSP and for aquatic environmental protection.

Abstract:As one major causes of water environmental contamination,Non-point Source Pollution(NPS)owning to its complex dynamic mechanism has drawn much attention from researchers to adopt water environmental pollution models as major means for simulation studies.Soil and Water Assessment Tool(SWAT),developed by U.S.Department of Agriculture(USDA),has gained international acceptance as an advanced,interdisciplinary,distributed water environmental model and a strong platform for simulation,investigation and assessment of watershed NPS.Being integrated with techniques of Geographic Information Systems(GIS)and Remote Sensing(RS),SWAT is distinguished for its capabilities of comprehensively,continuously,reasonably simulating various long-term water environmental processes in complex meso-or macro-scale watersheds,as well as predicting the impacts of climate change,management practices,Land use and cover change(LUCC)on catchments' water balance and NPS.On the basis of extensive investigation of SWAT related literatures published at home and abroad,with great efforts concentrated on tracking the periodical remarkable improvements of SWAT,this paper systematically summarized the progress of model developing status and its current advancements.Discussions on successful applications of the model in various watersheds on NPS studies and state-of-the-art research progress were given together with the analysis of main problems and difficulties existed in application practices of SWAT on research of NPS in China.Additionally,future development and possible improvements for the NPS sub-model of SWAT were prospected.The paper was aimed at intensifying appropriate applications of SWAT on NPS studies in China to improve reliability of model simulating results and efficiency of NPS research practices so as to provide quantitative,scientific decision supports for Best Management Practices(BMPs).

Abstract:Non-point source pollution in agriculture was a global environmental concern. It is an important measure for preventing and controlling targeted agricultural non-point source (ANPS) pollution to determine the critical source areas and key factors by evaluation. This paper reviewed the evaluation indexes and methods of ANPS pollution and their selection at different scales, highlighting the evaluation indexes and their weights involved in the pollution sources, mitigation strategies, and environmental impacts of ANPS. It also explored load estimation of different scales from ANPS pollution. Estimation methods mainly include regional pollution load balance, unit pollution load, and simulation model. Field monitoring can provide an accurate estimation of ANPS pollution loads. Still, it is costly, and it requires intensive labor, leading to scarce monitoring data. Most empirical models in calculating ANPS pollution at watershed scales lacked the process of ANPS pollution entering the water body. The mechanism model was limited by available monitoring data, which was difficult to be applied on a large scale. Quantifying nutrient loads at regional or national scales was challenging, mainly due to model shortcomings and a lack of high-resolution data on agricultural management practices. Therefore, the evaluation of ANPS pollution should formulate systematic technical standards and develop the evaluation model based on information technology. Further implemented measures to prevent and control ANPS pollution should be according to local conditions.
