Abstract:The filtering glomerulus is a highly specialized capillary bed that simultaneously provides maximal permeability for low molecular weight solutes and highly efficient retention of plasma macromolecules under a decreasing gradient of arteriolar pressure. Fenestrated endothelia, glomerular basement membrane, and interdigitating foot processes from podocytes are the primary structural elements of the filtration barrier. Slit diaphragms establish cell–cell contact between foot processes as the final element of the filtration barrier and are a decisive factor in modulating size selectivity.1 In the past decade, the discovery of genes mutated in inherited forms of nephrotic syndrome has expanded our understanding of the molecular composition of the slit diaphragm.2 The discovery of these framework molecules were quickly followed by identification of a series of associated intracellular signaling and adaptor proteins3,4 (for reviews, see references5,6). Abstract:The effect of stimulation of skeletal muscle somatic receptor afferents on renal function and renin release was examined in anesthetized dogs (bilateral carotid occlusion and vagotomy) with controlled renal arterial pressure. Afferent sciatic nerve stimulation (20-40 V, 1 ms) at 0.6-1.5 Hz elicited cardiovascular pressor responses, renal vasoconstriction, and stimulation of renin release, whereas at 0.3-0.8 Hz cardiovascular depressor responses and inhibition of renin release without changes in renal blood flow were found. Renal denervation abolished the inhibition of renin release but not the cardiovascular depressor response to afferent sciatic nerve stimulation at 20-40 V, 1 ms, and 0.3-0.8 Hz. Peripheral somatic afferent nerves contain fibers which, when appropriately stimulated, produce either pressor or depressor cardiovascular responses. At constant renal arterial pressure, increases in renin release occur with pressor responses, whereas decreases in renin release, mediated by the renal nerves, occur with depressor responses.

Abstract:Background: Individual differences in temperament are believed to influence the development of children's eating behavior. This hypothesis has predominantly been tested in cross-sectional designs and important confounders such as genetics and stable parenting factors have not been accounted for. The present study aims to establish more clearly than previous studies if temperament is involved in the etiology of eating behavior in middle childhood. Methods: A community sample of Norwegian children (n = 997) were followed biennially from age 4 to age 10. Temperamental negative affectivity, effortful control, and surgency were measured by The Child Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ). The Children's Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ) captured four 'food approach' behaviors ('food responsiveness', 'enjoyment of food', 'emotional overeating', 'desire to drink') and four 'food avoidant' behaviors ('emotional undereating', 'satiety responsiveness', 'food fussiness', 'slowness in eating'). The prospective relationships between temperament and eating behavior were tested with fixed, random and hybrid effect models, which adjust for all unmeasured time-invariant factors (e.g. genetics, common methods over time) RESULTS: Over and above unmeasured time-invariant confounders, higher negative affectivity predicted more 'food approach' and 'food avoidant' behavior, as did low effortful control, although less consistently so. Greater surgency was prospectively related to more 'food approach' and less 'food avoidant' behavior, but only at some ages and with the exception of emotional over- and under-eating. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that temperament is involved in the etiology of children's eating behavior. Negative affectivity, in particular, may affect both 'food approach' and 'food avoidant' behavior. Because children prone to react with negative affect are at increased risk of obesogenic and disordered eating behaviors, their parents should be particularly aware of how to support healthy eating.

Abstract:Emotional eating is associated with an increased risk of binge eating, eating in the absence of hunger and obesity risk. While previous studies with children and adolescents suggest that emotion regulation may be a key predictor of this dysregulated eating behavior, little is known about what other factors may be influencing the link between emotional regulation and emotional eating in adolescence. This multi-method longitudinal study (n = 138) utilized linear regression models to examine associations between childhood emotion regulation, adolescent weight status and negative body image, and emotional eating at age 17. Emotion regulation predicted adolescent emotional eating and this link was moderated by weight status (β = 1.19, p < 0.01) and negative body image (β = −0.34, p < 0.01). Higher engagement in emotional eating was predicted by lower emotional regulation scores among normal-weight teens (β = −0.46, p 0.10). Higher scores on emotion regulation were significantly associated with lower emotional eating at high (β = −1.59, p < 0.001) and low (β = −1.00, p < 0.01) levels of negative body image. Engagement in emotional eating was predicted by higher negative body image among overweight/obese teens only (β = 0.70, p < 0.001). Our findings show that while better childhood emotion regulation skills are associated with lower emotional eating, weight status and negative body image influence this link and should be considered as important foci in future interventions that aim to reduce emotional eating in adolescence.

The influence of temperament on stress‐induced emotional eating in children

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Stress-induced emotional eating is a risk factor for overweight and obesity. Previous research proposes both the human serotonin transporter gene (5-HTTLPR) and child's reactive temperament are promising candidates to help explain individual differences in stress-induced emotional eating and weight. Understanding the association between specific genotypes, reactive temperament factors, and stress-induced emotional eating may inform the development of personalized and effective treatment for children who may be at risk for overweight and obesity.OBJECTIVE: The current study explored the conditional indirect effect of genetic and environmental susceptibility (i.e., the interaction between 5-HTTLPR and reactive temperament) on weight (as measured by percent body fat) mediated by stress-induced emotional eating.METHOD: One hundred and forty-seven children (4 to 6 years old; 50.3% female; 22.4% Hispanic), along with their primary caregiver, completed laboratory tasks and questionnaires that assessed the child's reactive temperament, stress-induced emotional eating, and percent body fat.RESULTS: The interaction between 5-HTTLPR and impulsivity as well as with negative affectivity significantly predicted percent body fat. The interaction between 5-HTTLPR and impulsivity as well as with negative affectivity significantly predicted both total calorie consumption and rate of total calorie consumption. However, the mediation aspect of this statistical model was not supported.CONCLUSIONS: Child reactive temperament is an important indicator of how children approach eating when stressed. Mental health providers may consider prescribing strategies to reduce emotional eating among children with the SL variant and moderate to high impulsivity as well as children with the LL variant and high negative affectivity.

Abstract:Background: Stress is associated with physiological and behavioral adaptations that increase the risk for obesity and related diseases in adults and children. Mechanisms linking stress to chronic disease are diverse and not fully elucidated, but research suggests stress may impact eating behaviors and increase food intake and thereby, risk for obesity. Objective: The purpose of this study was to test the hypotheses that women's perceived stress and household disorder are associated with more uncontrolled and emotional eating among women, more food responsiveness and emotional overeating among their children, and greater adiposity in both women and their children. Methods: Women (n = 86) completed the Perceived Stress Scale, Confusion, Hubbub and Order Scale, Three Factor Eating Questionnaire, and Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire. Total body fat (%) was measured via dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Linear regression models evaluated associations of perceived stress and household disorder with eating behaviors and adiposity of women and their children (4-10 years old). Results: In a sample of predominantly non-Hispanic Black women (84.9%, n = 73), more perceived stress and household disorder were associated with more uncontrolled and emotional eating (p < 0.05). Women's perceived stress was not associated with their children's eating behaviors; however, household disorder was positively associated with children's food responsiveness and emotional overeating (p < 0.05). Perceived stress and household disorder were not associated with adiposity of women or their children. Conclusions: These findings suggest household disorder may be a factor for home-based interventions to consider when addressing eating behaviors among families with children.

Abstract:Background: Stress and negative emotions may impact on appetite, inducing some individuals to eat less and others to eat more. This behavior has been implicated in the onset of bodyweight problems and eating disorders in childhood. The aim of our study is to evaluate factors potentially associated with emotional eating in children. Methods: The present cross-sectional study derives from a survey conducted in 2021 on 8-9 years old children attending 11 primary schools. A questionnaire was administered that contained multiple-choice items relating to the children and their mothers, and touching on all the factors thought to be associated with emotional eating as behavioral traits or adherence to Mediterranean diet. A multivariable logistic regression was performed to test the association. Results: Emotional undereating was positively associated with emotional symptoms (OR 1.72; 95% CI 1.11-2.67); emotional overeating was positively associated with both emotional symptoms (OR 2.01; 95% CI 1.29-3.13) and hyperactivity (OR 2.80; 95% CI 1.59-4.92), and inversely associated with peer problems (OR 0.50; 95% CI 0.25-0.99). Emotional undereating was also positively associated with the number of siblings (OR 1.50; 95% CI 1.03-2.18), and inversely associated with a good adherence to the Mediterranean diet (OR 0.25; 95% CI 0.08-0.84). Conclusions: The study found children's emotional eating associated with both dietary patterns and behavioral traits (in particular emotional symptoms, hyperactivity and peer problems). It could be useful to improve parents' awareness so that they can anticipate and pay more attention to this issue. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet should also be reinforced, by means of health promotion interventions at school, for example.

Abstract:We investigated whether parental expressed emotion (criticism and emotional overinvolvement) is related to children's emotional eating and whether this relationship is mediated by children's negative urgency. One hundred children, aged 8 to 13 years, either healthy or have binge-eating disorder and/or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, completed the questionnaires, along with their parents. Parental criticism and, to a lesser extent, parental emotional overinvolvement were both positively related to children's emotional eating, and this relationship was mediated by children's negative urgency. Further exploratory analyses revealed that the mediating role of children's negative urgency in the relationship between parental criticism and children's emotional eating was pronounced in the clinical group of children with binge-eating disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder but almost absent in the healthy control group. Abstract:Emotional overeating is defined as eating in response to emotions. Around the preschool years, there is a shift from emotional undereating to overeating, which suggests environmental influences in the development of overeating. The use of food by parents to control their child's emotions, rather than to teach them appropriate emotion regulation strategies, may impact the child's ability to regulate their own emotions, resulting in emotional overeating. We hypothesized that such coercive control practices with food by parents would be associated with poorer ability of the child to regulate their own emotions, which in turn would lead to increased emotional overeating, but not emotional undereating. Mothers of four- and five-year-olds (N = 221) were recruited through MTurk and Prolific to complete online questionnaires measuring food parenting practices (Comprehensive Feeding Style Questionnaire and Parent Feeding Style Questionnaire), child emotion regulation (Emotion Regulation Checklist), and child emotional eating (Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire). Several mediation models were tested. Parent's use of food to control emotions and behavior was associated with higher levels of emotional overeating, which was mediated by poorer child emotion regulation. However, child emotion regulation did not mediate the association between parent's use of food to control emotions and behavior and the child's emotional undereating. Taken together, these models suggest that parent's use of coercive control with food may lead to child emotional overeating, but not emotional undereating, by teaching children to regulate their emotions through eating rather than more adaptive regulation strategies. Future experimental and longitudinal studies are needed to directly test the nature and direction of these associations and whether coercive control with food teaches children to overeat in response to their emotions in lieu of using appropriate emotion regulation strategies.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To identify specific eating behavior pathways that mediate associations between financial difficulties, negative life events, and maternal depressive symptoms from 0 to 5 years and cardiometabolic risk in adolescence.METHOD: Hypotheses were tested with data from birth to age 15 years using the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, a birth cohort in the United Kingdom (n = 3,887 for current analyses). Mothers reported on financial difficulties, negative life events, and maternal depressive symptoms at multiple points from 0 to 5 years and reported on worry about child overeating at 8 years. Youth self-reported restrained, emotional, and external eating at age 14. Youth completed a cardiometabolic health assessment at age 15 where waist circumference, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein, and insulin resistance were measured. Longitudinal structural equation modeling with bootstrapping was used to test mediation models.RESULTS: Greater negative life events and maternal depressive symptoms predicted greater parental worry about child overeating at age 8, which directly predicted greater restrained and emotional eating at 14 and cardiometabolic risk at 15. Restrained and emotional eating at 14 directly predicted greater cardiometabolic risk at age 15.CONCLUSIONS: Negative life events and maternal depressive symptoms in infancy/early childhood are associated with cardiometabolic risk in adolescence through pathways of parental worry about child overeating in middle childhood and youth-reported restrained and emotional eating in adolescence. Abstract:Child weight issues can be emotionally challenging for parents. The purpose of this study was to examine how parents' ability to manage negative emotions may facilitate parenting self-efficacy and healthy parenting behaviors (e.g., providing healthy food for a child). In this study, parents (N = 159) of a child between the ages of 6–12 completed a health-specific parenting self-efficacy questionnaire and retrospectively reported their child's daily servings of fruits and vegetables and sweets and soda. They also completed a parental emotion regulation task where they viewed film clips of families struggling with child weight challenges. During this task, parents managed their emotions by either positively reframing the situation to feel less negative (down-regulate negative emotions) or negatively reframing the situation to feel more negative (up-regulate negative emotions). We tested a mediation model examining the relations among parent emotion regulation, parenting self-efficacy, and child dietary habits. Results revealed that parents' ability to down-regulate negative emotions was associated with lower parenting self-efficacy, which in turn was associated with greater sweets and soda consumption among children. In contrast, parents' ability to up-regulate negative emotions was directly associated with lower sweets and soda consumption, regardless of parenting self-efficacy. Our findings have implications for healthcare practice and child weight interventions as they underscore the importance of helping parents consider the consequences of childhood obesity to encourage healthy eating behavior in families.

How energy balance-related behaviors, temperament, stress, and overweight associate: A cross-sectional study of Finnish preschoolers

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to 1) examine the clustering of energy balance-related behaviors (EBRBs) and 2) investigate whether EBRB clusters, temperament, and hair cortisol concentration (HCC) associate with overweight. Design: We assessed food consumption using food records, screen time using sedentary behavior diaries, sleep consistency and temperament (negative affectivity, surgency, effortful control) using questionnaires, and HCC using hair samples. Accelerometers were used to assess physical activity (PA) intensities, sleep duration, and sleep efficiency. Researchers measured each child's weight and height. We used finite mixture models to identify EBRB clusters and multilevel logistic regression models to examine the associations between EBRB clusters, temperament, HCC, and overweight. Setting: The cross-sectional DAGIS survey, data collected in 2015–2016. Participants: Finnish 3–6-year-olds (n=864) recruited through preschools. Results: One-third of the participants were categorized into the cluster labeled "Unhealthy diet, excessive screen time", characterized by unhealthy dietary choices (e.g., greater consumption of high-fat, high-sugar dairy products) and longer screen time. Two-thirds were categorized into the second cluster, labeled "Healthy diet, moderate screen time". PA and sleep were irrelevant for clustering. Higher negative affectivity and lower effortful control associated with the "Unhealthy diet, excessive screen time" cluster. EBRB clusters and HCC did not associate with overweight, but surgency was positively associated with overweight (OR=1.63, 95% CI 1.17–2.25). Conclusions: Of the EBRBs, food consumption and screen time seem to associate. As temperament associates with EBRB clusters and overweight, tailored support acknowledging the child's temperament could be profitable in maintaining a healthy weight.

Emotional Regulation and Overeating Behaviors in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review

Abstract:The worldwide prevalence of obesity has dramatically increased, mostly in children and adolescents. The Emotional Eating theoretical model has proposed that the failure in emotional regulation could represent a risk factor for establishing maladaptive overeating behavior that represents an inadequate response to negative emotions and allows increasing body-weight. This systematic review investigates the relationship between overeating and both emotional regulation and emotional intelligence in childhood and adolescence, considering both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. Moreover, another goal of the review is evaluating whether emotional regulation and emotional intelligence can cause overeating behaviors. The systematic search was conducted according to the PRISMA-statement in the databases Medline, PsychArtcles, PsychInfo, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Sciences, and allows 484 records to be extracted. Twenty-six studies were selected according to inclusion (e.g., studies focused on children and adolescents without clinical conditions; groups of participants overweight or with obesity) and exclusion (e.g., studies that adopted qualitative assessment or cognitive-affective tasks to measure emotional variables; reviews, commentary, or brief reports) criteria detailed in the methods. Cross-sectional studies showed a negative association between emotional regulation and overeating behavior that was confirmed by longitudinal studies. These findings highlighted the role of maladaptive emotion regulation on overeating and being overweight. The relationship between these constructs in children and adolescents was consistent. The results indicated the complexity of this association, which would be influenced by many physiological, psychological, and social factors. These findings underline the need for further studies focused on emotion regulation in the development of overeating. They should analyze the mediation role of other variables (e.g., attachment style, peer pressure) and identify interventions to prevent and reduce worldwide overweight prevalence.

Abstract:Parent-child dysfunctional interactions (PCDI) are known to contribute to children's weight status. However, the underlying mechanisms in how dysfunctional interactions between parent and child influence child weight are not clear. This study investigates the impact of PCDI on toddlers' weight, focusing on the potential serial mediation by maternal emotional feeding and child appetite traits. We conducted a secondary analysis of longitudinal data from a larger intervention trial to prevent childhood obesity in low-income Hispanic families. A total of 241 mother-child dyads were included in these analyses. Measurements were taken at various stages: PCDI at child age 19 months, maternal emotional feeding at 28 months, and both child appetite traits and weight-for-age z-score (WFAz) at 36 months. Serial mediation analyses revealed a significant indirect effect of early PCDI on later child WFAz through maternal emotional feeding and two child food approach traits (food responsiveness, emotional overeating) out of the eight child appetite traits assessed. PCDI at 19 months was associated with increased use of emotional feeding in mothers at 28 months, which was associated with heightened food responsiveness and emotional overeating in children at 36 months, which in turn was linked to greater child WFAz at 36 months. The findings of this study expand the understanding of the mechanisms underlying PCDI and child weight, emphasizing the interplay between maternal feeding practices and child appetite in the context of adverse parent-child interactions during early childhood.
Emotional Eating Prevalence and Correlates in Adolescents in the United States

Abstract:Background: Adolescent obesity rates continue to rise. A better understanding of who engages in emotional eating, a maladaptive eating style, is needed. Despite emotional eating being a frequent research target, the prevalence of emotional eating in US adolescents is currently unknown. Methods: Nationally representative adolescents (n = 1622, m = 14.48 years, 63.8% non-Hispanic White, 50.6% female) reported eating behaviors in the National Cancer Institute's Family Life, Activity, Sun, Health, and Eating (FLASHE) study. Frequencies and one-way ANOVAs were conducted to examine the rates of emotional eating across demographic and weight status groups. Correlations between emotional eating and dietary intake were examined. Results: In total, 30% of adolescents engaged in emotional eating. Older adolescents (35% of 17-year-olds), females (39%), non-Hispanic White individuals (32%), and adolescents with obesity (44%) had significantly higher rates of emotional eating. Controlling for weight status, greater adolescent emotional eating was correlated with more frequent intake of energy-dense/nutrient-poor foods (β = 0.10, p < 0.001), junk food (β = 0.12, p < 0.001), and convenience foods (β = 0.13, p < 0.001). Conclusions: This study fills a critical gap by providing insight into how common adolescent emotional eating is and highlighting demographic factors that are associated with higher rates. Nearly a third of adolescents in the United States reported eating due to anxiety or sadness, with rates higher in older adolescents, girls, non-Hispanic White adolescents, and adolescents with obesity. Emotional eating was associated with consuming less healthy foods, which conveys immediate and long-term health risks. Practitioners can intervene with emotional eating to reduce obesity and comorbid health risks.
Parental mindful eating practices and mindful eating interventions are associated with child emotional eating

Abstract:The family environment, which involves parent eating behaviors and feeding practices, influences child intake and eating behaviors. Specifically, parental emotional eating or emotional feeding practices may lead to emotional eating in the child. Mindful eating practices may decrease emotional eating behaviors. The purpose of this narrative review was to investigate the influence of parental mindful eating on emotional eating behaviors of their children or adolescents. A secondary purpose of this review was to determine whether a family-based or child mindful eating intervention improves child emotional eating directly or through the improvements of the parent and parental role modeling. EBSCOhost was used to simultaneously search 5 databases. The search was limited to full-text, peer-reviewed articles in the English language. Seven studies, 4 cross-sectional studies and 3 intervention studies, were identified. Across studies, measures of mindful and emotional eating differed. Among the cross-sectional studies, parental mindful eating/feeding or mindful parenting were either directly or indirectly related to decreased emotional eating in the child or adolescent. The effect was unclear among the intervention studies; however, these were pilot feasibility studies. Overall, parental mindful eating is associated with emotional eating behaviors among children and adolescents. Additional studies with a randomized controlled design are needed to evaluate parent mindful eating interventions on child and adolescent eating behaviors. Additionally, future trials need to use similar validated measures to ensure consistent quality data collection and allow for comparison of findings across studies.
Negative emotional eating patterns in Chinese adolescents: A replication and longitudinal extension with latent profile and transition analyses

Abstract:This study, which is a longitudinal extension of previous cross-sectional studies in Chinese and American college students and general adults (Dixit, He, Whited, Ellis, & Zickgraf, 2023; He, Chen, Wu, Niu, & Fan, 2020; Xu et al., 2024), used latent profile and latent transition analyses to investigate negative emotional eating patterns and the stability of these patterns in 1462 Chinese adolescents (41% boys, aged 11-17 years) at baseline and 18 months later. We also explored baseline demographic predictors of negative emotional eating patterns and the associations between these patterns and outcome variables measured 18 months later. Negative emotional eating was measured with the Adult Eating Behavior Questionnaire (emotional undereating and emotional overeating subscales). Latent profile analysis (LPA) replicated the four patterns of negative emotional eating in each wave of assessment: low emotional eating (Low-EE), emotional overeating (EOE), emotional undereating (EUE), and emotional over- and under-eating (EOE-EUE). Latent transition analysis (LTA) showed that the EE patterns had transition probabilities of <55% remaining in the same class across 18 months. Furthermore, relative to adolescents in the stable Low-EE group, adolescents in all other stable or unstable emotional eating groups in LTA were linked to higher eating disorder psychopathology and psychological distress measured 18 months later. Thus, emotional eating, regardless of type (i.e., EOE, EUE, and EOE-EUE) and stability (i.e., stable or unstable), may be a viable research and treatment target in improving adolescents' eating behaviors and mental health.
