Abstract:Strengthening water (H2O) interaction is a universal strategy for reducing H2O reactivity, yet often at the expense of kinetics. Here, we unveiled the controllable modulation of molecular structures in aqueous electrolytes and their tailorable electrochemical performance in high-energy aqueous batteries. The H-bond properties and special distributions are identified as crucial parameters to decouple the electrochemical stability and the transport properties of Li+ in the aqueous-based electrolytes. It is found that the mildly solvating ethylene glycol diethyl ether (DEE) is capable of balancing both high-energy Li-ion batteries with a greatly extended electrochemical window of 1.4-5.2 V vs. Li+/Li and high ionic conductivity of 7.2 mS cm(-1) at room temperature with a low salt concentration (1.57 mol/L). LiMn2O4||Li4Ti5O12 aqueous cells deliver outstanding cycling performance over 300 cycles at 1C. One Ah pouch cell is demonstrated with a high energy density of 76.76 Wh kg(-1) at 0.2C and stable cycling performance at room temperature and a low temperature of -20 degrees C. This work provides new insights and strategies to design advanced electrolytes for rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous Zn–MnO 2 technology combines one of the oldest battery chemistries with favourable sustainability characteristics, including safety, cost and environmental compatibility. However, the ambiguous charge storage mechanism presents a challenge to fulfil the great potential of this energy technology. Here we leverage on advanced electron microscopy, electrochemical analysis and theoretical calculations to look into the intercalation chemistry within the cathode material, or α-MnO 2 more specifically. We show that Zn 2+ insertion into the cathode is unlikely in the aqueous system; rather, the charge storage process is dominated by proton intercalation to form α-H x MnO 2 . We further reveal anisotropic lattice change as a result of entering protons proceeding from the surface into the bulk of α-MnO 2 , which accounts for the structural failure and capacity decay of the electrode upon cycling. Our work not only advances the fundamental understanding of rechargeable zinc batteries but also suggests the possibility to optimize proton intercalation kinetics for better-performing cell designs.

Abstract:Intrinsically stable materials are desirable for constructing energy storage devices, which aim to demonstrate durability under the harsh electrochemical conditions that are detrimental to their lifespan. However, it is demonstrated here that the intrinsic instability of an electrochemical interface can be converted from an obstacle into an advantage. In aqueous zinc-ion batteries, manganese oxide (MnO2) exhibits considerable dissolution even in electrolyte containing Mn2+ salt. Balancing with redeposition alleviates the harmful impact of dissolution on performance and alters the trajectory of the active phase. Inclusion of Mn2+ salt in the electrolyte induces MnO2 deposition on all conductive surfaces, requiring that distracting side reactions be eliminated to isolate the dynamics of the active phase. Under conditions favoring dissolution, capacity decreases dramatically and a highly crystalline tetragonal ZnMn2O4 phase forms, while redeposition helps maintain capacity and promotes a disordered cubic Zn-rich phase. Ultimately, this work aims to illuminate a path forward to unlock the potential of batteries made with materials that are fundamentally unstable in their operating environment.

Abstract:Metallic zinc (Zn) with high safety and low cost is an ideal anode for aqueous batteries, but suffers from water-induced side reactions and dendrite growth. Herein, we significantly stabilize the Zn anode in a non-concentrated aqueous zinc trifluoromethanesulfonate (Zn(OTF)2) electrolyte when 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) additive is used to simultaneously regulate the electrolyte structure and Zn interface chemistry. We find that the introduction of DME not only interrupts the original hydrogen-bond network of water but also creates a unique Zn2+-solvation structure with the co-participation of DME and OTF−, which restrains the water-induced parasitic reactions. The in-situ formation of an organic-inorganic hybrid ZnF2-ZnS-rich interphase on Zn derived by the decomposition of DME and OTF− can suppress water penetration onto Zn and homogenize Zn2+ plating. In addition, DME molecules preferentially adsorb on the Zn surface, preventing the random growth of Zn dendrites. This novel H2O+DME electrolyte enables Zn anodes to achieve unprecedented cycling stability (over 5000 h at 2.0 mA cm−2) and high reversibility (99.7% Coulombic efficiency over 800 cycles). The efficacy of DME additives is further demonstrated in Zn//V2O5•nH2O full batteries with both coin- and pouch-type configurations. This work will inspire the design of efficient electrolytes for stable aqueous batteries.

Abstract:Despite their cost-effectiveness and intrinsic safety, aqueous zinc-ion batteries have been struggling with poor reversibility originating from various active water-induced side reactions. After systematically scrutinizing the effects of water on the evolution of solvation structures, electrolyte properties, and electrochemical performances through experimental and theoretical approaches, a hydrated deep eutectic electrolyte with a water-deficient solvation structure ([Zn(H2O)2(eg)2(otf)2]) and reduced free water content in the bulk solution is proposed in this work. This electrolyte can dramatically suppress water-induced side reactions and possess high Zn2+ mass transfer kinetics, which enables highly reversible Zn anodes (~99.6% Coulombic efficiency over 1,000 cycles, stable cycling over 4,500 h) and high capacity Zn//NVO full cells (436 mAh g-1). This work will aid the understanding of electrolyte solvation structure-electrolyte property-electrochemical performance relationships of aqueous electrolytes in aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Abstract:Introduction Opportunistic protozoan infections are among the most serious infections in patients with AIDS."A They cause severe morbidity and mortality; because many are treatable, it is important that early and accurate diagnoses are made. This is normally accomplished by direct microscopic visualisation of the parasite in infected tissues or body secretions. Rigid adherence to normal diagnostic procedures may not be appropriate in patients with AIDS because the site and manifestation of some of these infections may be unusual. Experience of these conditions among histopathologists and microbiologists is extremely variable. Furthermore, treatment of the protozoan infections in patients with AIDS is often complicated by severe side effects and a high rate of recurrence. We review the known protozoan infections in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seropositive people, the appropriate tissues to sample, the light and electron microscopic appearances, and briefly outline appropriate antibiotic treatment. The protozoa identified to date in these patients are listed in the table. AIDS. The AIDS epidemic has considerably increased our awareness of this organism, which is now known to be a common childhood infection among the immunocompetent in whom the infection is self-limiting.8 In patients with AIDS and in other immunocompromised groups infection can be both protracted and life threatening. It has a particularly high incidence in HIV positive patients with diarrhoea in Africa" and it is found in up to 10% of most series of HIV positive patients with diarrhoea in the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Regulating the Inner Helmholtz Plane Structure at the Electrolyte-Electrode Interface for Highly Reversible Aqueous Zn Batteries

Abstract:The development of aqueous Zn batteries is limited by parasitic water reactions, corrosion, and dendrite growth. To address these challenges, an inner Helmholtz plane (IHP) regulation method is proposed by employing low-cost, non-toxic maltitol as the electrolyte additive. The preferential adsorption behavior of maltitol can expel the water from the inner Helmholtz plane, and thus hinder the immediate contact between Zn metal and H2O. Meanwhile, strong interaction between maltitol and H2O molecules can restrain the activity of H2O. Besides, the “IHP adsorption effect” along with the low LUMO energy level of maltitol-CF3SO3- can promote the in-situ formation of an organic-inorganic complex solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer. As a result, the hydrogen/oxygen evolution side reaction, corrosion, and dendrites issues are effectively suppressed, thereby leading to highly reversible and dendrite-free Zn plating/stripping. The Zn||I2 battery with hybrid electrolytes also demonstrates high electrochemical performance and ultralong cycling stability, showing a capacity retention of 75% over 20000 charge-discharge cycles at a large current density of 5 A g−1. In addition, the capacity of the device has almost no obvious decay over 20000 cycles even at −30 °C. This work offers a successful electrolyte regulation strategy via the IHP adsorption effect to design electrolytes for high-performance rechargeable Zn-ion batteries.

Abstract:Developing rechargeable aqueous Zn batteries for large-scale energy storage is impeded by inadequate reversibility and stability of the Zn anode, primarily caused by parasitic reactions and heterogeneous deposition. This study proposes an economical electrolyte strategy to address these Zn-related issues. The addition of a supporting salt enhances the thermodynamic stability of water, reduces the number of highly reactive water molecules, and modulates the interfacial electrostatic interaction. This approach effectively suppresses hydrogen evolution reaction and uncontrolled deposition. Remarkably, the rationally proportioned electrolyte allows a high average Coulombic efficiency of 99.93% for 1000 cycles in a Zn||Cu battery and a prolonged lifespan exceeding 4800 h in Zn||Zn cells. The knock-on effect is that Zn||MnO 2 pouch cells deliver stable cycling performance, demonstrating the viability of this approach for practical applications.

Abstract:Aqueous Zn/MnO 2 batteries with their environmental sustainability and competitive cost, are becoming a promising, safe alternative for grid-scale electrochemical energy storage. Presented as a promising design principle to deliver a higher theoretical capacity, this work offers a fundamental understanding of the dissolution-deposition mechanism of Zn/β-MnO 2 . A multimodal synchrotron characterization approach including three operando X-ray techniques (powder diffraction, absorption spectroscopy, and fluorescence microscopy) is coupled with elementally resolved synchrotron X-ray nano-tomography. Together they provide a direct correlation between structural evolution, reaction chemistry, and 3D morphological changes. Operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy show a crystalline-to-amorphous phase transition. Quantitative modeling of the operando data by Rietveld refinement for X-ray diffraction and multivariate curve resolution (MCR) for X-ray absorption spectroscopy are used in a complimentary fashion to track the structural and chemical transitions of both the long-range (crystalline phases) and short-range (including amorphous phases) ordering upon cycling. Scanning X-ray microscopy and full-field nano-tomography visualizes the morphology of electrodes at different electrochemical states with elemental sensitivity to spatially resolve the formation of the Zn- and Mn-containing phases. Overall, this work critically indicates that for Zn/MnO 2 aqueous batteries, the reaction pathways involving Zn-Mn complex formation upon cycling become independent of the polymorphs of the initial electrode and sheds light on the interplay among structural, chemical, and morphological evolution for electrochemically driven phase transitions.

Abstract:The aqueous hybrid ion batteries, due to electrode advantages combined with different battery systems, are promising energy storage systems. The severe side reaction caused by a highly active aqueous electrolyte is the key challenge that restricts its practical application. Exploring the microstructure of the electrolyte is of great significance to improving the electrochemical performance. Herein, the regulation mechanism of acylamide groups in an aqueous electrolyte is deeply investigated. Due to the strong coordination ability and hydrophilicity of the acylamide group, the solvation structure of cations can be regulated, and the activity of water molecules can be weakened by hydrogen bonds. Therefore, the Zn2+ plating/stripping process on the anode side can be orderly regulated, and the stability of the crystal structure of the cathode also could be significantly improved. Consequently, after adding 5% polyacrylamide into the electrolyte, the zinc anode can withstand long-term plating/stripping over 120 h at 1 mA cm–2 and 0.25 mA h cm–2. Also, the LiFePO4 cathode could achieve a capacity resistance of 82% after 350 cycles at 0.5 A g–1, far higher than the 24% of pure liquid electrolytes. This work provides a helpful guidance for designing the next generation of hybrid ion electrolytes.

An “Ether‐In‐Water” Electrolyte Boosts Stable Interfacial Chemistry for Aqueous Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:Aqueous batteries are promising devices for electrochemical energy storage because of their high ionic conductivity, safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, their voltage output and energy density are limited by the failure to form a solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI) that can expand the inherently narrow electrochemical window of water (1.23 V) imposed by hydrogen and oxygen evolution. Here, a novel (Li4(TEGDME)(H2O)7) is proposed as a solvation electrolyte with stable interfacial chemistry. By introducing tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (TEGDME) into a concentrated aqueous electrolyte, a new carbonaceous component for both cathode−electrolyte interface and SEI formation is generated. In situ characterizations and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations reveal a bilayer hybrid interface composed of inorganic LiF and organic carbonaceous species reduced from Li+2(TFSI−) and Li+4(TEGDME). Consequently, the interfacial films kinetically broaden the electrochemical stability window to 4.2 V, thus realizing a 2.5 V LiMn2O4−Li4Ti5O12 full battery with an excellent energy density of 120 W h kg−1 for 500 cycles. The results provide an in‐depth, mechanistic understanding of a potential design of more effective interphases for next‐generation aqueous lithium‐ion batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous batteries are attractive due to their high safety and fast reaction kinetics, but the narrow electrochemical stability window of H2O limits their applications. It is a big challenge to broaden the electrochemical operation window of aqueous electrolytes while retaining fast reaction kinetics. Here, a new organic aqueous mixture electrolyte of manipulatable (3D) molecular microheterogeneity with H2O-rich and H2O-poor domains is demonstrated. H2O-poor domains molecularly surround the reformed microclusters of H2O molecules through interfacial H-bonds, which thus not only inhibit the long-range transfer of H2O but also allow fast and consecutive Li+ transport. This new design enables low-voltage anodes reversibly cycling with aqueous-based electrolytes and high ionic conductivity of 4.5 mS cm-1. LiMn2O4||Li4Ti5O12 full cells demonstrate excellent cycling stability over 1000 cycles under various C rates and a low temperature of -20 °C. 1 Ah pouch cell delivers a high energy density of 79.3 Wh kg-1 and high Coulombic efficiency of 99.4% at 1 C over 200 cycles. This work provides new insights into the design of electrolytes based on the molecular microheterogeneity for rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Abstract Aqueous Zn-ion batteries have attracted increasing research interest; however, the development of these batteries has been hindered by several challenges, including dendrite growth, Zn corrosion, cathode material degradation, limited temperature adaptability and electrochemical stability window, which are associated with water activity and the solvation structure of electrolytes. Here we report that water activity is suppressed by increasing the electron density of the water protons through interactions with highly polar dimethylacetamide and trimethyl phosphate molecules. Meanwhile, the Zn corrosion in the hybrid electrolyte is mitigated, and the electrochemical stability window and the operating temperature of the electrolyte are extended. The dimethylacetamide alters the surface energy of Zn, guiding the (002) plane dominated deposition of Zn. Molecular dynamics simulation evidences Zn 2+ ions are solvated with fewer water molecules, resulting in lower lattice strain in the NaV 3 O 8 ·1.5H 2 O cathode during the insertion of hydrated Zn 2+ ions, boosting the lifespan of Zn|| NaV 3 O 8 ·1.5H 2 O cell to 3000 cycles.

An Overcrowded Water-Ion Solvation Structure for a Robust Anode Interphase in Aqueous Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:The water-in-salt electrolyte (WISE) features intimate interactions between a cation and anion, which induces the formation of an anion-derived solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and expands the aqueous electrolyte voltage window to >3.0 V. Although further increasing the salt concentration (even to >60 molality (m)) can gradually improve water stability, issues about cost and practical feasibility are concerned. An alternative approach is to intensify ion-solvent interactions in the inner solvation structure by shielding off outward electrostatic attractions from nearby ions. Here, we design an "overcrowded" electrolyte using the non-polar, hydrogen-bonding 1,4-dioxane (DX) as an overcrowding agent, thereby achieving a robust LiF-enriched SEI and wide electrolyte operation window (3.7 V) with a low salt concentration (<2 m). As a result, the electrochemical performance of aqueous Li4Ti5O12/LiMn2O4 full cells can be substantially improved (88.5% capacity retention after 200 cycles, at 0.57 C). This study points out a promising strategy to develop low-cost and stable high-voltage aqueous batteries.

Abstract:Zn batteries with water–acetonitrile hybrid electrolyte could achieve stable cycling. Acetonitrile promotes the stability of Zn anode by removing water molecules from the solvation structure of zinc ions to decrease its activity, thus suppressing the side reactions and promoting the average Coulombic efficiency of Cu/Zn half‐cell to 99.9%. Rechargeable aqueous zinc batteries are promising energy storage devices because of their low cost, high safety, and high energy density. However, their performance is plagued by the unsatisfied cyclability due to the dendrite growth and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the Zn anode. Herein, it is demonstrated that the concentrated hybrid aqueous/non‐aqueous ZnCl2 electrolytes constitute a peculiar chemical environment for not only the Zn‐ions but also water molecules. The high concentration of chloride ions substitutes the H2O molecular in the solvation structure of Zn2+, while the acetonitrile further interacts with H2O to decrease its activity. The hybrid electrolytes both inhibit the dendrite formation and HER, enabling an ultrahigh average Coulombic efficiency of 99.9% in the Zn||Cu half‐cell and a highly reversible Zn plating/stripping with a low overpotential of 21 mV. Using this hybrid electrolyte, the Zn||polytriphenylamine (PTPAn) full cell deliveres a high discharge capacity of 110 mAh g−1, a high power density of 9200 W kg−1 at 100 °C and maintains 85% of the capacity for over 6000 cycles at 10 °C. This study provides a deep understanding between the solvation structure and columbic efficiency of Zn anode, thus inspiring the development for stable Zn batteries.

Abstract:A hybrid electrolyte with tripropyl phosphate (TPP) as a co‐solvent is utilized to boost the stability of both for cathode and anode via tuning the electrolyte solvation structure. A robust poly‐inorganic solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is in situ formed on the Zn anode and the notorious vanadium dissolution is effectively restricted on the V2O5 cathode side. The application of zinc‐ion batteries (ZIBs) is seriously challenged by the poor stability of Zn anode and cathode in aqueous solution, which is closely associated with electrolyte structure and water reactivity. Herein, the stability issues both for the cathode and anode can be simultaneously addressed via tuning the electrolyte solvation structure in hybrid electrolyte with tripropyl phosphate (TPP) as co‐solvent. On the Zn anode, a robust poly‐inorganic solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer comprised of Zn3(PO4)2‐ZnS‐ZnF2 species is in situ formed, effectively suppressing parasitic reaction and dendrite evolution. For V2O5 cathode, the notorious vanadium dissolution is effectively restricted with improved structure stability achieved. The optimized electrolyte facilitates the reversible redox kinetics both at the cathode and Zn anode. Consequently, Zn||Zn cells display extended cycling lifespans over 3000 h at 1 mA cm−2, 1 mAh cm−2. Zn||V2O5 full cells deliver a high reversible capacity of 261.8 mAh g−1 and hold retention of 73.6% upon 500 cycles even operated in harsh conditions with thin Zn anode (10 μm) and low negative/positive (N/P) ratio of ≈4.3, which also showcase impressive performance with regard to rate and storage performance, further emphasizing the potential of electrolyte regulation tactics in advancing the commercialization of ZIBs.

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have been regarded as a promising battery technology for stationary energy storage applications due to high safety, long-term sustainability, and low cost. The main challenge for ZIBs is the lack of robust structure to accommodate repeated ion insertion/extraction in aqueous solutions. In contrast to transition metal oxides cathodes (MnO2, V2O5), iron-based polyanionic compounds have rigid structure and open framework, hence may serve as compatible cathodes for aqueous batteries. However, only several iron-based polyanionic cathodes such as Na4Fe3(PO4)2P2O7, have received scant attentions to date, not to mention that their underlying complex reaction mechanisms in aqueous solutions have not yet been clearly revealed. In this work, we identify the Na+/Zn2+ cointercalation mechanism of Na4Fe3(PO4)2P2O7 in zinc-ion batteries by both experimental spectra and DFT calculations. Benefiting from the synergistic chemistry, the Na4Fe3(PO4)2P2O7 demonstrates enhanced structural stability and ion diffusion kinetics upon the Na+/Zn2+ cointercalation in comparison with single metal ion (only Na+ or Zn2+) storage reaction, hence a high-power density (6.73 kW kg–1) and long cycle life (54.6% after 5000 cycles) are exhibited. In particular, the prominent reaction kinetics endows the battery with low-temperature (−30 °C) operation capability (capacity retention of 87.6%).

Abstract:A reliable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the metallic Zn anode is imperative for stable Zn-based aqueous batteries. However, the incompatible Zn-ion reduction processes, scilicet simultaneous adsorption (capture) and desolvation (repulsion) of Zn2+(H2O)6, raise kinetics and stability challenges for the design of SEI. Here, we demonstrate a tandem chemistry strategy to decouple and accelerate the concurrent adsorption and desolvation processes of the Zn2+ cluster at the inner Helmholtz layer. An electrochemically assembled perforative mesopore SiO2 interphase with tandem hydrophilic -OH and hydrophobic -F groups serves as a Janus mesopores accelerator to boost a fast and stable Zn2+ reduction reaction. Combining in situ electrochemical digital holography, molecular dynamics simulations, and spectroscopic characterizations reveals that -OH groups capture Zn2+ clusters from the bulk electrolyte and then -F groups repulse coordinated H2O molecules in the solvation shell to achieve the tandem ion reduction process. The resultant symmetric batteries exhibit reversible cycles over 8000 and 2000 h under high current densities of 4 and 10 mA cm-2, respectively. The feasibility of the tandem chemistry is further evidenced in both Zn//VO2 and Zn//I2 batteries, and it might be universal to other aqueous metal-ion batteries.
Uncovering Synergistic Effects of Electrode/Electrolyte Toward Concerted Cathodic Structure Stabilization for Superior‐Performance Aqueous Zn‐δ‐MnO2 Battery

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous Zn-delta-MnO2 batteries, featuring high safety, high theoretical capacity, and low cost, have emerged as promising candidates for grid-scale energy storage systems. Nevertheless, the severe cathodic structural degradation greatly hinders its further commercial application. Herein, a facile coupling engineering strategy, employing the Ti3C2Tx MXene skeleton coupled with electrolyte additive K2SO4 to reinforce the structural stability of the delta-MnO2 cathode is proposed. Notably, the designed K-birnessite delta-MnO2/Ti3C2Tx composite cathode (KMO/Ti3C2) coupled with K2SO4 electrolyte additive exhibits unique electrode/electrolyte synergistic effects on inhibiting the cathodic structural collapse and promoting the Mn2+ electrodeposition. Meanwhile, the plating/stripping reversibility of the Zn anode is considerably improved by manipulating the formation of zinc dendrites. Consequently, the Zn//KMO/Ti3C2 battery achieves the remarkable specific capacity of 502.2 mAh g(-1) at 0.3 A g(-1) and 371.1 mAh g(-1) at 2.0 A g(-1). Furthermore, after 9500 cycles at a high current density of 10 A g(-1), the capacity retention reaches 93.3%. Besides, the dendrite-free Zn anode delivers excellent cycling stability (over 4800 h at 0.2 mA cm(-2)) and high coulombic efficiency (99.9% after 2300 cycles). The synergistic effect of electrode/electrolyte provides distinctive insights into the structural stabilization of the manganese-based cathode to improve the overall performance of batteries.
