Influence of Micro- and Nano-Plastics on Phenanthrene Adsorption at the Root Water Interface

Abstract:The adsorption of organic pollutants onto plant root surfaces is an initial crucial stage in the transfer of these pollutants from aqueous or soil solutions to plant systems. This study explored the potential influence of microand nano-plastics (MNPs) (0.1-100 mu m) on the process of phenanthrene (Phe) adsorption at the root-water interface. The findings indicate that MNPs can exhibit either promotional or inhibitory effects on the root adsorption of organic pollutants, depending on both their particle size and content. Specifically, both the sorption capability of MNPs for Phe and their tendency to accumulate on or within root tissues increase with decreasing particle size. These dual effects facilitate the accumulation of nanoscale MNPs (0.1-6 mu m in this work) within roots, which function as efficient carriers for Phe and increase Phe accumulation in root tissues. In contrast, MNPs with larger particle sizes (1-100 mu m in this work) exhibit reduced affinity for roots and are more prone to remain in solution, thereby exerting more pronounced competitive inhibition against the adsorption of Phe by roots. However, when the concentration of nano-plastics in the root-water system exceeded the retention capacity of the roots, the excess nano-plastics could compete with the roots for Phe, potentially reducing overall Phe sorption by the roots. These conditional effects of MNPs as either competitors or facilitators (vectors) in the root adsorption processes of organic pollutants may account for the different roles observed in previous studies where MNPs exhibited varying effects on the plant accumulation of organic pollutants.

Abstract:The increased production and commercial use of nanoparticulate drug delivery systems combined with a lack of regulation to govern their disposal may result in their introduction to soils and ultimately into groundwater systems. To better understand how such particles interact with environmentally significant interfaces, we study the adsorption, desorption, and removal behavior of poly(ethylene glycol)-based nanoparticulate drug delivery systems on and from cellulose, which is the most common organic compound on Earth. It is shown that such an adsorption process is only partially reversible, and most of the adsorbate particles do not desorb from the cellulose surface even upon rinsing with a large amount of water. The rate constant of adsorption decreases with increasing particle size. Furthermore, hydrodynamic forces acting parallel to the surfaces are found to be of great importance in the context of particle dynamics near the cellulose surface, and ultimately responsible for the removal of some fraction of particles via rolling or sliding. As the particle size increases, the removal rates of the particles increase for a Oven hydrodynamical condition.
Co-transport of Phenanthrene and Pentachlorophenol by Natural Soil Nanoparticles Through Saturated Sand Columns

Abstract:Mobile colloids such as nanoparticles (NPs) are often considered to affect the fate and transport of various contaminants by serving as carriers. Many studies have focused on the effect of engineered NPs on contaminant transport. To date, very little information is available on the co-transport of natural soil NPs with typical organic contaminants. This study investigated the co-transport of phenanthrene (PHE) and pentachlorophenol (PCP) by three soil NPs through saturated sand columns. Soil NPs with high organic matter and particle concentration were the most effective in transporting PHE through columns. In addition, soil NPs significantly increased the transport of low-level PHE (0.2 mg L-1) but there was no obvious increase at 1.0 mg L-1 PHE. This is attributed to a higher ratio of NP-associated PHE to total PHE at a low-level than at a high-level during transport. In contrast to PHE, the chemical speciation of PCP determined its mobility, which was highly dependent on solution pH. At pH 6.5, anionic PCP became dominant and soluble in the effluent. This could account for the negligible effect of soil NPs on PCP mobility. At pH 4.0, however, neutral molecular PCP dominated and, as expected, decreased mobility of PCP occurred. Soil NPs considerably enhanced the transport of neutral PCP in NP-associated forms compared to controls, due to the high hydrophobicity and sorption affinity of PCP to NPs. The mobility of soil NPs was little affected by PHE and PCP under tested conditions. This study indicated that highly mobile soil NPs may be effective carriers for organic contaminants and give a new direction to polluted site remediation by using a natural material, e.g., soil. Abstract:Recently, the exposure of nanoplastics (NPs) in the environment has received extensive attention. Research concerning their fate and transport in the aquatic environment is very important and urgent. In this study, the influence of two sources of natural organic matter (NOM) on the behaviour of NPs were investigated in view of the complexity of NOM. Humic acid (HA), Suwannee River humic acid (SRHA) and Upper Mississippi River NOM (MRNOM) were chosen to represent pedogenic NOM, while bovine serum albumin (BSA) was on behalf of aquagenic NOM. The results showed that NOM could reduce the aggregation and sedimentation of NPs, exhibiting excellent stabilization effect. The stability effect was affected by the concentrations and the sources of NOMs. For pedogenic NOMs, the stabilization effect was caused by adsorption modes with different microscopic morphologies through specific functional groups, while it was induced by the mode of steric stabilization in the presence of BSA. Spectroscopic method and micromorphology study further provided a new insight into exploring the possible mechanism of the interaction between NPs and NOMs.
Differences in Transport Behavior of Natural Soil Colloids of Contrasting Sizes from Nanometer to Micron and the Environmental Implications.

Abstract:Transport behaviors of nanoparticles (<100 nm) and clay fractions (clay particles, <2 mu m; coarse clay particles, 1-2 mu m and fine clay particles, 0.1-1 mu m) extracted from two natural soils (Inceptisol from Jilin and Oxisol from Hainan, China) were investigated in saturated sand columns at 1-30 mM NaCl and pH 5-9. Increasing NaCl concentrations decreased the mobility, while increasing pH increased the mobility of soil particles of various sizes. At pH 5 and 30 mM NaCl, nanoparticles and clay fractions exhibited the different transport behaviors, and ripening was observed for Inceptisol nanoparticles while blocking for Oxisol nanoparticles in breakthrough curves (BTCs). The effluent mass recoveries (MRs) of nanoparticles were much more than that of clay particles for both two soils (>1.9-fold) at all tested conditions, except for Inceptisol at pH 5 and 30 mM NaCl (with comparable MR). According to Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) calculations and particle-collector size ratios, both secondary energy minimum and physical straining led to the retention of clay fractions at pH 5 and 30mM NaCl, whereas primary energy minimum and straining induced by simultaneous aggregation caused the retention of nanoparticles. The experimental attachment efficiency between soil particles of various sizes and sand collector for both two soils was in the order nanoparticles < fine clay particles < clay particles < coarse clay particles, indicating that soil nanoparticles had greater mobility than clay fractions. Consequently, nanoparticles are suggested to have greater risks to transport contaminants to surface and groundwater, once they are released from soils. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Increasing applications of nanoparticles (NPs) in agriculture have raised potential risks to soil and aquatic ecosystems. A comparative study examining the transport of commonly used NPs in porous media is of critical significance for their application and regulation in agroecosystems. In this study, laboratory column leaching experiments were conducted to investigate the transport and retention of polysuccinimide NPs (PSI-NPs) in two saturated porous media with different grain sizes, as compared with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), nano-Ag and nano-TiO2. Zeta potential of the NPs was negative at pH(6.3) and decreased in an order of PSI-NPs > nano-TiO2 > MWCNTs > nano-Ag. The coarse and fine sands used in this study had negative charges with similar zeta potentials. The movement of NPs was affected by grain size, with larger sizes facilitating mobility while finer sizes favoring retention of NPs in the porous matrix. The retention profile significantly varied between the two sand columns, with more NPs transported to deeper layers in the coarse sand than the fine sand. The relative percentage of NPs detected in leachate was found to be positively correlated with the zeta potential of NPs (r = 0.931). Among the NPs, nano-Ag had the most negative zeta potential, and therefore was the most mobile, followed by MWCNTs and nano-TiO2. Having the least negative zeta potential, PSI-NPs had the lowest mobility, as compared with other NPs regardless of matrix grain size. This work reveals grain size and zeta potential of NPs are major factors that influence transport of NPs along the vertical porous profile, as well as demonstrating the relative unimportance of NP composition, which could serve as important guideline in nanomaterials application, risk assessment, and waste management in agroecosystems.

Abstract:The processes by which small nanoplastics (NPs) accumulate in soil are unclear. To clarify the different deposition processes that affect small NPs (< 30 nm) compared to larger NPs in the soil environment, due to their interaction with clays as major soil components, the transport behavior of two-sized NPs (20 and 80 nm) with two clays (diatomite (Diat) and montmorillonite (Mont)) in NaCl and CaCl 2 solutions were investigated in water-saturated quartz sand columns. The experimental results showed that more 20 nm NPs could enter the lattice structure of Diat than Mont in NaCl solution. This contributed to the stronger deposition of 20 nm NPs by Diat on sand, which was associated with a lower k 1d / k1 value (obtained from two-site kinetic attachment model). In contrast, 80 nm NPs had a stronger reversible retention than 20 nm NPs with Mont, even though both sizes of NPs-Mont displayed a similar transportability. In CaCl 2 solution, the larger NPs-Mont hetero-aggregates formed with a stronger suppressed depth of φ max based on Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory. Thus, Mont had a stronger transport inhibition than Diat for both NPs sizes, with a lower k 1d /k 1 . These findings could benefit in predicting the size-based deposition of NPs in a heterogenous soil environment.

Abstract:Nanoparticles are ubiquitous in soil, and their quantity and stability play important roles in the fate, transport and bioavailability of contaminants in the environment. In this research, four soil nanoparticles (SNPs) were extracted from typical soil of different regions in China. Three different kinds of natural organic matter (NOM) were subsequently added to suspensions of SNPs to determine the effects of NOM on the stability of SNPs. The critical coagulation concentration (CCC), one of the most important indicators of the stability of the colloidal suspension in electrolyte solutions, was measured. The increase in CCC values indicated that the stability of SNPs was enhanced by NOM; however, the stability varied with the different electrolytes, properties of SNPs and properties of NOM. A coating of NOM increased the negative charges on the surface of SNPs. Therefore, the electrostatic force had a greater effect on the stability of SNPs than the van der Waals force, which contributed to their stability. The effect of NOM on the stability of SNPs was more evident in electrolytes with a monovalent cation (Na+) than in those with a divalent (Ca2+) or trivalent cation (La3+). The NOM increased the stability of less stable SNPs in relation to the composition and properties of SNPs. Further research is required to understand better how the behaviour and fate of SNPs are affected by NOM in the environment.HighlightsThe effect of organic matter on the stability of soil nanoparticles is evaluated. Effects of soil particles and convective transport on dispersion and aggregation of nanoplastics via small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and ultra SANS (USANS)

Abstract:Terrestrial nanoplastics (NPs) pose a serious threat to agricultural food production systems due to the potential harm of soil-born micro- and macroorganisms that promote soil fertility and ability of NPs to adsorb onto and penetrate into vegetables and other crops. Very little is known about the dispersion, fate and transport of NPs in soils. This is because of the challenges of analyzing terrestrial NPs by conventional microscopic techniques due to the low concentrations of NPs and absence of optical transparency in these systems. Herein, we investigate the potential utility of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and Ultra SANS (USANS) to probe the agglomeration behavior of NPs prepared from polybutyrate adipate terephthalate, a prominent biodegradable plastic used in agricultural mulching, in the presence of vermiculite, an artificial soil. SANS with the contrast matching technique was used to study the aggregation of NPs co-dispersed with vermiculite in aqueous media. We determined the contrast match point for vermiculite was 66% D2O / 33% H2O. At this condition, the signal for vermiculite was ~50-100%-fold lower that obtained using neat H2O or D2O as solvent. According to SANS and USANS, smaller-sized NPs (50 nm) remained dispersed in water and did not undergo size reduction or self-agglomeration, nor formed agglomerates with vermiculite. Larger-sized NPs (300-1000 nm) formed self-agglomerates and agglomerates with vermiculite, demonstrating their significant adhesion with soil. However, employment of convective transport (simulated by ex situ stirring of the slurries prior to SANS and USANS analyses) reduced the self-agglomeration, demonstrating weak NP-NP interactions. Convective transport also led to size reduction of the larger-sized NPs. Therefore, this study demonstrates the potential utility of SANS and USANS with contrast matching technique for investigating behavior of terrestrial NPs in complex soil systems.
Soil organic matter facilitates the transport of microplastic by reducing surface hydrophobicity

Abstract:Groundwater contamination by microplastic (MP) causes increasing concern about the critical factors that determine MP transport mechanisms in the vadose zone. Strong water repellency of native microplastic surfaces and respective attractive hydrophobic interactions with components of the soil matrix limits its mobility. However, adsorption of dissolved organic matter (DOM) onto microplastic surfaces can potentially make them more hydrophilic, enhancing their mobility. Consequently, the main objective of this study was to systematically determine the effects of DOM on both the surface properties and the mobility of polystyrene microplastic (PSP), and to use the extended DLVO theory (XDLVO) to predict PSP transport behavior with natural DOM for the first time. Breakthrough experiments were conducted in columns filled with quartz sand, through which PSP (1 μm) were percolated at either 0 or 5 mg/L dissolved organic carbon (DOC) derived from beech ( Fagus sylvatica ) litter at ionic strengths ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 mM CaCl 2 , since the cation background also affects wettability and mobility. Using sessile drop contact angle and zeta potential measurements, XDLVO interaction energy components including Lewis acid-base energies were approximated. Breakthrough curve analysis confirmed that DOM coming from natural sources strongly enhanced the mobility of PSP in the quartz sand matrix, in particular at higher ionic strength. At 2.5 mM CaCl 2 , the presence of DOM increased PSP breakthrough from 1 % to 60 %. Consequently, in the absence of DOM, laser microscope images showed much more pronounced formation of microplastic clusters on quartz grain surfaces than at co-percolation of PSP with DOM. This behavior could be clearly predicted with the XLDVO approach, which suggests at 0 mg/L DOC a deep primary energy minimum between individual PSP and between PSP and quartz surfaces. In contrast, repulsive hydrophilic interactions between the surfaces were predicted at 5 mg/L DOC. We conclude that even low concentrations of DOM, as usually found in subsoil, can significantly enhance the mobility of microplastic in soils via rendering the surfaces more hydrophilic. This implies potentially serious repercussions for the spread of this contaminant in the environment.

Abstract:The influence of low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) and goethite on the migration of nanoplastics in the soil environment remains poorly understood. To elucidate the mechanism of influence, the study investigated the impact of LMWOAs on the migration ability of functionalized polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs-NH 2 /COOH) in quartz sand (QS) and goethite (α-FeOOH)-coated quartz sand (FOS). We investigated the effect of changes in iron valence induced by LMWOAs on the migration of PSNPs. The results revealed that the migration ability of polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) declined as the ionic strength (IS) increased and the pH decreased, primarily due to the compression of the double layer and protonation reactions. The migration of PSNPs is facilitated by LMWOAs through distinct mechanisms in the two media. Specifically, LMWOAs were adsorbed on the FOS and QS surfaces through complexation and hydrogen bonding , respectively. At pH 4.0, LMWOAs exhibit redox activity, resulting in the generation of additional Fe(III). This redox process enhances the electrostatic attraction between the media and PSNPs, thereby reducing the competition at specific points and spatial resistance associated with LMWOAs. In contrast to FOS, LMWOAs at pH 4.0 reduced the migration ability of PSNPs in QS, following the trend of MA > TA > CA. This difference was attributed to the pKa of LMWOAs and the weak hydrogen bonding on the QS surface. The relevant mathematical models effectively validate the migration results. The above conclusions suggest that LMWOAs can alter the valence state of iron on the surface of goethite, thereby influencing the migration of plastic particles in environmental media.

Impact of diatomit on the transport behavior of unmodified and carboxyl-modified nanoplastics in saturated porous media

Abstract:Due to the extensive use of plastic products and unreasonable disposal, nanoplastics contamination has become one of the important environmental problems that mankind must face. The composition and structure of porous media can determine the complexity and diversity of the transport behavior of nanoplastics. In this study, the influence of diatomite (DIA) on the nanoplastics transport in porous media is investigated by column experiments combined with XDLVO interaction energy and transport model. Results suggest that the recovery rates of unmodified polystyrene nanoparticles (PSNPs) and carboxyl-modified polystyrene nanoparticles (PSNPs-COOH) in the porous media containing DIA decreases compared with that in the pure quartz sand (QS), and the BTCs showed a "blocking" pattern. The presence of DIA inhibits the transport of both PSNPs and PSNPs-COOH, but the inhibition is not significant. This may be because the presence of DIA provides more favorable deposition sites for PSNPs and PSNPs-COOH to some extent. However, since DIA itself carries a certain negative charge, this can only play a role in compressing the double electric layer for PSNPs and PSNPs-COOH with the same negative charge, and cannot destabilize them. The migration capacity of PSNPs and PSNPs-COOH is strongest in the DIA-QS porous media at pH = 7, and is weak at pH = 9 and pH = 5. The inhibition of migration at pH = 9 can be attributed to the dissolution of the DIA surface under alkaline conditions and the formation of pore and defect structures, which provide more deposition sites for PSNPs and PSNPs-COOH. The presence of humic acid (HA) leads to an increase in the mobility of PSNPs and PSNPs-COOH, and the mobility is enhanced with HA concentration. The mobility of PSNPs and PSNPs-COOH in DIA-QS decreases with ionic valence and ionic strength, and PSNPs-COOH is more significantly inhibited compared to PSNPs.

Abstract:Metal oxides exist in porous media in the form of composite metal oxides, which can significantly affect the transport and transformation of pollutants in the soil environment. In this study, binary metal oxide porous media were prepared to explore the effects of solution chemistry, and the presence of binary metal oxides on the transport of functional group modified polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) in saturated porous media. The results show that the existence of binary metal oxides significantly affects the migration ability of PSNPs in saturated porous media. The increase of ionic strength and the presence of multivalent cations affect the transport capacity of PSNPs in porous media. The types of binary metal oxides affect the migration of PSNPs in saturated porous media. The surface roughness and electrostatic interaction are important factors affecting the retention of PSNPs on the surface of binary metal oxide saturated porous media. The surface morphology has a more far-reaching impact. In addition, DLVO theory cannot fully explain the interaction between PSNPs and saturated porous media in the presence of Al 3+ . This study's results help provide some theoretical support for the migration of microplastics in the soil environment.

Abstract:Both surfactants and natural organic matters (NOMs) are substances commonly found in aqueous environments, and their effects on the transport of nanoplastics that is gradually gaining widespread attention in porous media are currently in their infancy, while their combined effects are absent. We investigated innovatively the combined effect of surfactants and NOMs on the transport of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) in saturated porous media. Adsorption tests of surfactants and NOMs onto PS-NPs, adsorption tests of PS-NPs onto quartz sand, and transport tests of PS-NPs in saturated quartz sand were conducted. Hydrophobicity and Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) interaction energy were measured and calculated. A mathematical model was employed to fit the transport of PS-NPs in porous media. It was found that the effects and action mechanisms of cationic cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and anionic sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) on the transport of PS-NPs in porous media were distinct. In the presence of CTAB, 1 mg/L humic acid (HA) and 10 mg/L sodium alginate (SA) could promote aggregation of PS-NPs by decreasing the absolute zeta potential of PS-NPs, and reducing the energy barrier between PS-NPs and porous media and increasing the blocking and straining, thus inhibiting the transport of PS-NPs. In the presence of SDBS, SA and HA could improve the adsorption of SDBS onto PS-NPs by bridging and increasing adsorption sites, thus increasing the hydrophilicity of PS-NPs and improving the transport of PS-NPs. Whether or not NOMs were present, the transport of PS-NPs in porous media was mainly governed by the DLVO interaction energy in the presence of cationic surfactants and by hydrophobicity in the presence of anionic surfactants. This innovative observation has led to an understanding on the environmental behaviour of nanoplastics in porous media under complex environments.

Effects of polyamide microplastic on the transport of graphene oxide in porous media

Abstract:With the rapid development of the nano-material and chemical industry, more and more microplastic (MP) and nano-material were discharged into the environment. In this study, a two-dimensional (2D) surface of Extended Darjaguin-Landau-Verwe-Overbeek (XDLVO) is proposed to quantitatively investigate the effect of polyamide (PA) on the transport of graphene oxide (GO) in porous media. The influences of mass fraction of PA, flow rate, GO concentration, ionic type and strength on the migration of GO in saturated porous media are investigated by column experiments and numerical models. The two-dimensional (2D) surfaces of XDLVO interaction energy between GO and GO, GO and QS, GO and PA, are firstly calculated to analyze the transport of GO in saturated porous media. Experimental results suggest the mobility of GO is enhanced when flow velocity and initial concentration of GO are increased. However, the mobility of GO is inhibited when the mass fraction of PA and ionic strength are increased. More important, the inhibitory effect of divalent cations on GO migration is stronger than that of monovalent cations. Simultaneously, XDLVO results suggest that ionic types and strengths are important factors affecting the mobility of GO in porous media, and the critical ionic strength is observed from the continuous variation of the secondary minimum trap of XDLVO interaction energy. Model results show that there is a linear relationship between the logarithm of the secondary minimum trap of XDLVO interaction energy and the parameters related to GO mobility, which suggests XDLVO energy surface has an important application significance in the accurate quantification of GO mobility in porous media. These findings contribute to GO transport affected by microplastic in porous media, thus laying a significant foundation for the environmental risk and contamination remediation.

Abstract:The significance of natural organic matter (NOM, both humic acid and alginate) on the transport and deposition kinetics of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) in irregular quartz sand was examined by direct comparison of both breakthrough curves and retained profiles with NOM present in NPs suspension versus those obtained without NOM. Packed column experiments were conducted in both NaCl and CaCl2 solutions under a series of environmentally relevant ionic strengths. Under all examined conditions, breakthrough plateaus with NOM even at concentration as low as 1mgL−1 of total organic carbon (TOC) were higher than those without NOM, indicating that presence of NOM in NPs suspensions enhanced ZnO NPs transport. Although hyper-exponential retained profiles were observed both in the presence and absence of NOM, the amount of retained ZnO NPs acquired in the presence of NOM decreased slowly as the transport distance increased. Straining induced by concurrent aggregation is found to cause the hyper-exponential decrease. In the presence of NOM, electrosteric interaction effectively reduced the ZnO NPs deposition on collector surfaces and NPs–NPs aggregation. Subsequently, the amount of NPs that jammed in the column inlet in the absence of NOM were markedly decreased, which therefore exhibited as flatter retained profiles.
Nanoplastics dominate the cotransport of small-scale plastics in seawater-saturated porous media

Abstract:The transport of microplastics (MP) or nanoplastics (NP) in porous media has been widely reported. However, their mutual interaction and effect on cotransport remain unclear. Here, we investigated the colloidal interaction between NP (50 nm), submicroplastics (SP, 300 nm), and MP (1000 nm) in seawater and their cotransport in saturated natural sea sands. In the single-component suspension, the recovered mass percentage (Meff) of colloids was as follows: MP (47.81%) > NP (24.18%) > SP (21.66%). SP and MP remained monodispersed. MP had the highest mobility due to the strongest electrostatic repulsion with sand surface, whereas NP formed homoaggregates and was characterized by ripening phenomena. In the SP-MP mixture, SP and MP kept independent mobility without mutual effect. In the NP-SP-MP mixture, the Meff of MP was reduced by 10% because unstable NP induced MP to form heteroaggregates with SP, which could not pass through the pores. In addition, NP attached to the sand surface could form additional retention sites to retain MP. By contrast, SP showed a 13% increase in Meff because MP became an indirect carrier of SP through the bridging of NP. Overall, this study demonstrates the dominant role of unstable NP in the cotransport of NP-SP-MP in the marine sedimentary environment.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in aquatic ecosystems reshapes the surface of nanoparticles (NPs) greatly. Understanding how these changes influence the bioavailability of NPs is critical for accurately predicting the ecological risks of NPs. A quantitative model based on the two-step internalization process enabled the differentiation between the adhesion ability of NPs to membranes and the internalization capacity. Using protozoa Tetrahymena thermophila as the test organism, fluorescein isothiocyanate-modified silica NPs (FITC-SiO2) and silica-coated gold NPs (2) were prepared to validate the model and study the influence of DOM on uptake. DOM reduced the ability of 2 to adhere onto cell membranes and the inhibitory effect of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and β-lactoglobulin was higher due to their higher molecular weights and the weaker interaction. Moreover, DOM increased the internalization capacity. 80% 2 was internalized in the presence of humic acid (HA), over 90% 2 was internalized in the presence of the two proteins, whereas only 60% were internalized by the control group. Next, the specific recognition of the cell internalization in the presence of DOM was confirmed. We concluded that the traditional "accumulation" may misestimate the true biological effect caused by NPs coated with DOM. NPs coated with highly bioavailable DOM pose a greater risk to aquatic ecosystems because they are more likely to be internalized by living organisms.

Abstract:With the increasing production and use of graphene oxide, the environmental implications of this new carbonaceous nanomaterial have received much attention. In this study, we found that the presence of low concentrations of graphene oxide nanoparticles (GONPs) significantly enhanced the transport of 1-naphthol in a saturated soil, but affected the transport of phenanthrene to a much smaller extent. The much stronger transport-enhancement effect on 1-naphthol was due to the significant desorption hysteresis (both thermodynamically irreversible adsorption and slow desorption kinetics) of GONP-adsorbed 1-naphthol, likely stemmed from the specific polar interactions (e.g., H-bonding) between 1-naphthol and GONPs. Increasing ionic strength or the presence of Cu(II) ion (a complexing cation) generally increased the transport-enhancement capability of GONPs, mainly by increasing the aggregation of GONPs and thus, sequestering adsorbed contaminant molecules. Interestingly, modifying GONPs with Suwannee River humic acid or sodium dodecyl sulfate had little or essentially no effect on the transport-enhancement capability of GONPs, in contrast with the previously reported profound effects of humic acids and surfactants on the transport-enhancement capability of C-60 nanoparticles. Overall, the findings indicate that GONPs in the aquatic environment may serve as an effective carrier for certain organic compounds that can interact with GONPs through strong polar interactions.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) pollution and dissolved organic matter (DOM) affect soil quality and functions. However, the effect of MPs on DOM and underlying mechanisms have not been clarified, which poses a challenge to maintaining soil health. Under environmentally relevant conditions, we evaluated the major role of polypropylene particles at four micron-level sizes (20, 200, and 500 μm and mixed) in regulating changes in soil DOM content. We found that an increase in soil aeration by medium and high-intensity (>0.5%) MPs may reduce NH4+ leaching by accelerating soil nitrification. However, MPs have a positive effect on soil nutrient retention through the adsorption of PO43- (13.30-34.46%) and NH4+ (9.03-19.65%) and their leached dissolved organic carbon (MP-leached dissolved organic carbon, MP-DOC), thereby maintaining the dynamic balance of soil nutrients. The regulating ion (Ca2+) is also an important competitor in the MP-DOM adsorption system, and changes in its intensity are dynamically involved in the adsorption process. These findings can help predict the response of soil processes, especially nutrient cycling, to persistent anthropogenic stressors, improve risk management policies on MPs, and facilitate the protection of soil health and function, especially in future agricultural contexts.
