Abstract:A superfamily of seven-transmembrane helix receptors catalyzes GDP release from heterotrimeric guanine nucleotide-binding proteins (G proteins) to initiate the intracellular signaling cascade. The photoreceptor rhodopsin is a prototypical member of the superfamily that activates the retinal G protein transducin (Gt). The cytoplasmic domain of rhodopsin binds and activates Gt, but residues that stimulate GDP release from Gt have not been identified until now. We show here that the abnormal signal transduction phenotypes of several different mutations affecting the highly conserved Glu134-Arg135 charge pair result from alteration of the GDP release step in the Gt activation cascade. We propose that Glu134 and Arg135 constitute the site that directly provides the signal from rhodopsin to activate GDP release from Gt. Because the Glu/Asp−Arg sequence occurs at a topologically identical location in most of the seven-transmembrane helix receptors, we propose that these residues constitute a switch for signal transfer.

Abstract:With the aggravated aging of the population, the incidence and mortality of osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures increase significantly and affect many families. Preventing the occurrence and development of osteoporosis may effectively improve the quality of life in the elderly and reduce the economic burden of the family and society. At present, it is found that the occurrence of osteoporosis is closely related to dietary nutrition. Early nutritional intervention may effectively prevent the occurrence of osteoporosis. In this paper, we illustrate the role of protein, calcium and vitamin D supplements in preventing osteoporosis and maintaining bone health, focusing on nutritional intervention studies based on bone mineral density or fracture. The possible mechanisms of nutritional intervention in osteoporosis and bone health are investigated. The importance of nutritional supplement in preventing fracture and maintaining bone health is emphasized.

Abstract:Objective: Despite the fact that China amounts to one-fifth of the world's population, has a higher proportion of the elderly, and has a higher prevalence of osteoporosis and fracture, limited studies have investigated the association between dietary patterns and bone mineral density (BMD) as well as fracture risk among the elderly Chinese population. We aimed to investigate the association between different dietary patterns and BMD as well as the risk of fractures, and this association may vary between elderly women and men. Methods: Building upon the China Osteoporosis Prevalence Study, we included 17,489 subjects aged ≥40 years old randomly sampled across 44 counties/districts of 11 provinces or municipalities in China who completed a food frequency questionnaire. BMD was measured by dual x-ray absorptiometry. Vertebral fracture was defined based on lateral spine radiographs using the semi-quantitative technique of Genant. Results: A diet rich in "carnivorous", "vegetarian", "dairy, fruit, and egg" was significantly associated with higher BMD at total hip (TH), femoral neck (FN), and lumbar spine 1–4 (L1–4). Yet, a diet rich in "beverage and fried food" was associated with a lower BMD at the FN and L1–4. High quartiles of the carnivorous diet were associated with 34%–39% reduced risk of clinical fracture in the past 5 years and vertebral fracture. Stronger associations were observed among women. Sensitivity analysis among postmenopausal women presented even stronger positive associations between carnivorous and vegetarian diets and high BMD, as well as between carnivorous diet and reduced risk of fractures. Conclusions: Our study suggested that a diet rich in meat, vegetables, and dairy, fruit, and eggs might be associated with greater BMD and a lower fracture risk, while beverage and fried foods may be associated with a lower BMD at L1–4, especially among elderly women. These findings are relevant to provide recommendations on dietary nutrition regarding the elderly population at high risk of osteoporosis and fractures, especially postmenopausal women.

Abstract:Bone metabolism is a process in which osteoclasts continuously clear old bone and osteoblasts form osteoid and mineralization within basic multicellular units, which are in a dynamic balance. The process of bone metabolism is affected by many factors, including diet. Reasonable dietary patterns play a vital role in the prevention and treatment of bone-related diseases. In recent years, dietary patterns have changed dramatically. With the continuous improvement in the quality of life, high amounts of sugar, fat and protein have become a part of people's daily diets. However, people have gradually realized the importance of a healthy diet, intermittent fasting, calorie restriction, a vegetarian diet, and moderate exercise. Although these dietary patterns have traditionally been considered healthy, their true impact on bone health are still unclear. Studies have found that caloric restriction and a vegetarian diet can reduce bone mass, the negative impact of a high-sugar and high-fat dietary (HSFD) pattern on bone health is far greater than the positive impact of the mechanical load, and the relationship between a high-protein diet (HPD) and bone health remains controversial. Calcium, vitamin D, and dairy products play an important role in preventing bone loss. In this article, we further explore the relationship between different dietary patterns and bone health, and provide a reference for how to choose the appropriate dietary pattern in the future and for how to prevent bone loss caused by long-term poor dietary patterns in children, adolescents, and the elderly. In addition, this review provides dietary references for the clinical treatment of bone-related diseases and suggests that health policy makers should consider dietary measures to prevent and treat bone loss.

A fruit, milk and whole grain dietary pattern is positively associated with bone mineral density in Korean healthy adults

Abstract:Background/Objectives:Osteoporosis is a major health problem that will grow in burden with ageing of the global population. Modifiable risk factors for osteoporosis, including diet, have significant implications for disease prevention. We examined associations between dietary patterns and bone mineral density (BMD) in a Korean adult population.Subjects/Methods:In total, 1828 individuals from the Healthy Twin Cohort were included as subjects. Information on general characteristics, lifestyles and health status was obtained through a health examination, and BMD was assessed using DEXA. Dietary intake was assessed using a 3-day food record, and dietary patterns were examined by factor analysis. Associations between dietary patterns and BMD were examined using mixed linear regression, adjusting for family and twin structure as well as other potential risk factors for bone health.Results:Four dietary patterns were identified (Rice and kimchi; eggs, meat and flour; Fruit, milk and whole grains; and Fast food and soda). The ‘Fruit, milk and whole grains’ pattern was associated with a reduced risk of having low BMD in men (odds ratio (OR)=0.38; 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.22–0.67) and women (OR=0.45; 95% CI=0.28–0.72) and was positively associated with BMD at multiple sites. The ‘rice and kimchi’ pattern had a positive association with only whole-arm BMD in men and women.Conclusions:Our results suggest that a dietary pattern with high intake of dairy products, fruits and whole grains may contribute positively to bone health in a Korean adult population, and dietary pattern-based strategies could have potential in promoting bone health.

[Dietary Pattern of Shanghai Community-Based Middle and Aged Women].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To provide data for decision-making and community nutrition intervention for middle and aged women, the dietary patterns and nutritional status were investigated in Shanghai. METHODS A stratified cluster random sampling dietary survey was performed for a sample (n = 596) of women aged 45 to 65 years old from 2 streets in Shanghai. Factor analysis was applied to define major dietary patterns by using dietary information collected from food-frequency questionnaires (FFQs), and to further examine associations between dietary patterns and main nutrients and demographic characteristics. RESULTS Four major dietary patterns were identified. The first pattern was characterized by higher intake of eggs, legumes and products, second pattern was characterized by higher of oil, sugar and condiments, the third pattern was characterized by a higher intake of dairy, vegetables and rice, while the fourth pattern was characterized by higher intake of fruits, beef and fish. Oil, sugar and condiments pattern associated with higher total energy and fat percentage of energy (P < 0.001), lower educated (P = 0.009) and lower household income (P = 0.008). A positively correlation was found between rice, vegetables, dairy pattern with calcium, protein and carbohydrates percentage of energy, and inversely correlated with BMI (P = 0.019), as well as energy and total fat. Fruit, meat and fish pattern was higher for the protein, vitamins B2, vitamin B6 and vitamin C. But no positive correlation was found between eggs and legumes and products pattern with nutrients intake or other sample characteristics. CONCLUSION Rice, vegetables and milk dietary pattern was associated with reduced risk of overweight and obesity.

Abstract:Objective To analyze the influence of lifestyle factors on bone mass among elderly population in Shanghai community .Methods Totally 14 814 volunteer aged over 65 years from Shanghai communities were investiga-ted using a self-designed questionnaire to survey their lifestyles , then bone mineral density (BMD) of right calcaneus were measured by quantitative ultrasound system ( QUS) .Results The BMD showed a significant decreasing trend with aging , both in men and women (all P<0.05).Men had greater BMD than women (0.441 g/cm2 vs.0.377 g/cm2, all P<0.05 ) .The level of BMD increased significantly with the improvement of education level ( all P<0.05 ); BMD levels of people who exercised≥30 min/d were significantly higher than those of people who did not exercise or exercised <30 min/d (0.415 g/cm2 vs.0.404 g/cm2 or 0.409 g/cm2, both P<0.05); BMD levels of people who drank milk≥250 mL/d were significantly higher than those of people who did not drink milk or drank <250 mL/d (0.418 g/cm2 vs. 0.405 g/cm2 or 0.405 g/cm2 , both P<0.05 ); BMD levels of people whose BMI below 21.77 kg/m2 were higher than those of people whose BMI above 21.77 kg/m2 (0.396 g/cm2 vs.0.412 g/cm2 , 0.411 g/cm2 , 0.418 g/cm2 , all P<0.05 ) .Conclusion BMD of calcaneal quantitative ultrasound in elderly people of Shanghai community was closely re -lated to lifestyle and diet nutrition .Education level , outdoor exercises , milkconsumption , BMI, type 2 diabetes were protective factors of BMD .While high age , female gender , type 1 diabetes were adverse factors of BMD .Good lifestyle and dietary habits are essential for bone health of elderly .
The Association Between Dietary Protein Diversity and Protein Patterns with Frailty in Older Chinese Adults: A Population-Based Cohort Study

Abstract:Frailty is a pervasive condition among older people worldwide. Despite the association between higher protein intake and lower frailty risk has been well documented, older individuals encounter barriers to enhancing their protein consumption due to reduced appetite and impaired digestive capacity. This study aims to delve into the potential correlation between dietary protein diversity, protein patterns, and the risk of frailty among older Chinese individuals. Prospective cohort study. Community-based. 2,216 participants aged 65 and above and not frail at the baseline were recruited from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) dataset spanning from 2014 to 2018. Dietary protein diversity was evaluated utilizing a protein diversity score (PDS), calculated based on the results of a food frequency questionnaire. Dietary protein patterns were identified by employing principal component analysis (PCA). Frailty was ascertained using a 40-item frailty index (FI) where FI > 0.21 indicated frailty. Logistic analysis was employed to investigate the association between dietary variables and frailty. 541 participants were identified as frail after a 4-year follow-up. Abstract:Background: Women aged >or=65 years are screened routinely for osteoporosis in the developed world and identifying risk factors for osteoporosis should be highlighted in developing countries such as the People's Republic of China. In the present study, possible factors related to the occurrence of primary osteoporosis in aged Chinese women were explored. Methods: On appointed attendance at a menopausal outpatient clinic, generally healthy Chinese women aged >or=65 years were requested to complete a self-administered questionnaire. Bone mineral density at the left femur region was assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, by which subjects were categorized as osteoporotic (group A), osteopenic (group B) or normal (group C). If a prevalent spinal fracture was affirmed, patients in group B were reclassified into group A. Non-conditional logistic regression analysis was applied to the calculate odds ratio (OR) of being in group A against the other two groups in terms of social and behavior factors (including education, past occupation, work quality, marriage status, income, self-rated health status, amount of daily physical activity, cigarette smoking, time watching television, and consumption of milk, soy products and tea). Results: Three hundred and twenty-four participants were eligible (77 in group A, 137 in group B, 110 in group C). There were significant differences in age, height, weight, menopausal age and years since menopause among groups. Compared with subjects with amount of daily physical activity <0.5 h in group A, the OR for women in group C was 0.357 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.144-0.889) for 0.5-1 h, 0.314 (95% CI 0.126-0.780) for 1-2 h and 0.278 (95% CI 0.080-0.968) for >2 h of daily physical activity. When adjusted for age and weight, however, the difference was not significant. Other factors did not reach statistical significance. Conclusion: The development of osteoporosis in aged women was affected by both menopause and aging. The known related factors could help to identify susceptible subjects in aged Chinese women for either further assessment or treatment.
Unraveling the Role of Serum Metabolites in the Relationship Between Plant-Based Diets and Bone Health in Community-Dwelling Older Adults

Abstract:The potential adverse effects of the plant-based dietary pattern on bone health have received widespread attention. However, the biological mechanisms underlying the adverse effects of plant-based diets on bone health remain incompletely understood. The objective of this study was to identify potential biomarkers between plant-based diets and bone loss utilizing metabolomic techniques in the Taizhou Imaging Study (TIS) (N = 788). Plant-based diet indexes (overall plant-based diet index (PDI), healthy plant-based diet index (hPDI), and unhealthy plant-based diet index (uPDI)) were calculated using the food frequency questionnaire, and bone mineral density (BMD) was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. A multinomial logistic regression was used to explore the associations of plant-based diet indexes with bone loss. Furthermore, mediation analysis and exploratory factor analysis (EFA) were performed to explore the mediated effects of metabolites on the association of plant-based diets with BMD T-score. Our results showed that higher hPDI and uPDI were positively associated with bone loss. Moreover, nineteen metabolites were significantly associated with BMD T-score, among them, seven metabolites were associated with uPDI. Except for cholesterol esters in VLDL-1, the remaining six metabolites significantly mediated the negative association between uPDI and BMD T-score. Interestingly, we observed that the same six metabolites mediated the positive association between fresh fruit and BMD T-score. Collectively, our results support the deleterious effects of plant-based diets on bone health and discover the potential mediation effect of metabolites on the association of plant-based diets with bone loss. The findings offer valuable insights that could optimize dietary recommendations and interventions, contributing to alleviate the potential adverse effects associated with plant-based diets.
Analysis of the Bone Mineral Density and Related Factors of 8 711 Adults in Community

Abstract:Objective To investigate changes in bone mineral density (BMD) and analyze its related factors in community populations to provide the early diagnosis of osteoporosis (OP) and give right guidance to prevent osteoporosis. Methods The quantitative ultrasound BMD analyzer was used to measure BMD of heel in 8 711 adults in community. At the same time a questionnaire survey was conducted among these subjects. The data were analyzed by Logistic stepwise regression analysis. Results With the age changing, males and females tended to have different BMD variation. Male and female's BMD peak values were respectively in 35-age group, 30-age group and decreased as age increased. T value of BMD was different between male and female (-1.40(-2.0--0.7)vs-1.3(-2.0--0.5))(P<0.001). Both men and women had a higher incidence of low bone mass (53.34%vs 47.46%), and the difference was significant (P<0.001), whereas the incidence of osteoporosis after 55 years of age between men and women was statistically significance (P<0.05). BMD was the lowest for female than for male in 50-age group, and the prevalence rate of OP was remarkably increased. Analysis of related factors of BMD showed that body mass index (BMI), age, diabetes and menopause were risk facts. Conclusion The BMD among adults is related to many factors, in which the age, BMI and menopause are the most important factors. Much attention should be paid to low bone mass phenomenon, timely monitoring, timely intervention, develop healthy working and living habits, is important to the prevention of osteoporosis and its complications.
Associations of Bone Mineral Density with Lean Mass, Fat Mass, and Dietary Patterns in Postmenopausal Chinese Women: A 2-Year Prospective Study

Abstract:Objective: To assess factors associated with bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women in a longitudinal study, and to examine the relative contribution of lean mass, fat mass, dietary patterns, and years since menopause to BMD. Methods: Two hundred and eighty-two postmenopausal women were randomly selected from Hongqi Community Health Center, in Harbin City, China. All participants were followed up from 2009 to 2011. Dietary data were collected using a Food Frequency Questionnaire. BMD of the left hip, the lumbar spine, and the total body, and the body composition were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at baseline and follow-up. Results: Lean mass and fat mass were positively associated with BMD of the spine, hip, and the total body at both baseline and follow-up. The association between fat mass and BMD at the spine at baseline (P = 0.210) and at the spine (P = 0.116) and hip (P = 0.073) in the second year was not statistically significant when height was adjusted. Six dietary patterns were identified but only cereal grains-fruits pattern (P = 0.001 in the spine, P = 0.037 in hip) and milk-root vegetables pattern (P = 0.010 in hip) were associated with BMD of the spine and hip. The linear mixed model of follow-up data showed that lean mass, years since menopause, and age of menophania were the significant determinants of BMD of all sites. Moreover, lean mass was the best determinant of BMD (VIP = 1.936). Conclusion: Lean mass, years since menopause, age of menophania and dietary patterns are the important determinants of BMD of the spine, hip, and the total body. Lean mass is the best determinant of BMD.
Opposing Effects of Nutritional Supply on Bone Health at Different Ages: Based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Database

Abstract:(1) Background: Nutrients play an essential role in bone health, whether in achieving peak bone mineral density (BMD) or maintaining bone health. This study explores the relationship between nutrient supply and femoral bone health at different ages. (2) Methods: A total of 5603 participants meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in this study using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database from 2005 to 2010, 2013 to 2014, and 2017 to 2018. Femoral bone mineral density and bone status were dependent variables, and dietary nutrient intake and nutrient intake status were independent variables. The relationship between dietary nutrient intake and bone mineral density was explored, and the importance of nutrients affecting bone status was analyzed through a neural network model. At the same time, we investigated the relationship between nutrient intake and bone status. (3) Results: The peak of age and femoral bone mineral density appeared at 20 years old in our study. After grouping by age, logistic regression analysis showed that before 20 years old, without adjusting other variables, high-fat diet was more likely to have normal bone mass than appropriate fat diet (OR: 4.173, 95%CI: 1.007–17.289). After adjusting for all demographic factors, niacin intake (OR: 1.062, 95%CI: 1.019–1.108) was beneficial for normal bone mass, while vitamin B6 intake (OR: 0.627, 95%CI: 0.408–0.965) was not. After 20 years old, after adjusting for carbohydrate, protein, vitamin B6, niacin, dietary fat, vitamin B2, and vitamin B12, vitamin B2 intake (OR: 1.153, 95%CI: 1.04–1.278) was beneficial for normal bone mass, while vitamin B6 intake (OR: 0.842, 95%CI: 0.726–0.976) was not. After adjusting for all confounding factors, vitamin B2 intake (OR: 1.288, 95%CI: 1.102–1.506) was beneficial for normal bone mass. In addition, we found that even if there was no statistical significance, the effects of high-fat diet on bone mass were different at different ages. (4) Conclusions: By conducting an in-depth analysis of the NHANES database, this study reveals that dietary factors exert divergent effects on bone health across different age groups, implying the necessity of implementing tailored dietary strategies to maintain optimal bone health at distinct life stages.

[Investigation on Bone Health Conditions in 1637 Aged Women].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate bone health conditions in 1637 aged women.METHODS:From May 2004 to October 2008, Bone mineral density (BMD) of 1637 women at age of more than 60 years old were measured by Hologic DephiA dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXEA) in Huadong hospital affiliated to Fudan University. All data were compared and analyzed among each group which will be divided by every ten years. Those women were divided into groups on 10 years range. BMD of lumbar vertebral and hip bone, fracture incidence and bone turnover marker were compared and analyzed.RESULTS:(1) BMD: at age of ≥90, 80-89, 70-79, 60-69, BMD of the lumbar vertebral 2-4 (L2-4) values were (0.96±0.18), (0.90±0.20), (0.81±0.16), (0.83±0.14) g/cm2, respectively. There were significantly increased BMD of lumbar of women at the age of 80-89 and ≥90 year-old compared with those of 60-69 year-old (P<0.05). At age of ≥90, 80-89, 70-79, 60-69 BMD of femur neck, Total, Torch, Ward's trianger were (0.60±0.11), (0.65±0.11), (0.47±0.09), (0.37±0.09) g/cm2; at age of 80-89 BMD of FN, Total, Torch, Ward's trianger were (0.57±0.10), (0.68±0.13), (0.48±0.11), (0.35±0.10) g/cm2; at age of 70-79 BMD of FN, Total, Torch, Ward's trianger were (0.57±0.10), (0.69±0.12), (0.49±0.10), (0.36±0.11) g/cm2; at age of 60-69 BMD of FN, Total, Torch, Ward's trianger were (0.63±0.10), (0.76±0.12), (0.54±0.10), (0.45±0.15) g/cm2; There were significantly decreased in BMD of hip at the age of 70-79, 80-89, ≥90 year-old compared with those of 60-69 year-old (P<0.05). (2) Fracture incidence:one time fracture incidence at age of 60-69, 70-79, 80-89, ≥90 were 34.8% (242/695), 45.0% (296/658), 51.3% (137/267), 5/17. There were increasing trend of fracture in aged women. (3) Bone turnover marker of bone Gla protein (BGP) N-mid (N-midBGP) in serum and C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen/Cr (CTX/Cr) in urine values were (17±5) µg/L, (106±56) µg/mmol at age of more than 90 years, (17±7) µg/L, (128±99) µg/mmol at age of 80-89 years, (21±14) µg/L, (182±173) µg/mmol at age of 70-79 years, (25±13) µg/L, (190±168) µg/mmol at age of 60-69 years. There were significant decreased trends of N-midBGP at age of 70-79, 80-89 compared with that of 60-year (P<0.05). There were significant decreased trends of CTX/Cr 80-89 compared with that of 60-year (P<0.05).CONCLUSIONS:There were significant decreased bone metabolism in aged women. The risk of hip fracture is significantly increased in aged women. Diagnosis of osteoporosis based on BMD of hip in aged women is more reliable.

Abstract:BackgroundOsteopenia and osteoporosis are posing a long-term influence on the aging population’s health contributing to a higher risk of mortality, loss of autonomy, hospitalization, and huge health system costs and social burden. Therefore, more pertinent data are needed to demonstrate the current state of osteoporosis. ObjectiveThis sampling survey seeks to assess the trends in the prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis in a Chinese Han population. MethodsA community-based cross-sectional study involving 16,377 participants used a multistage sampling method. Bone mineral density was measured using the quantitative ultrasonic densitometry. Student t test and Mann-Whitney U test were used to test the difference between normally and nonnormally distributed quantitative variables between male and female participants. A chi-square (χ2) test was used to compare categorized variables. Stratified analysis was conducted to describe the prevalence rates of osteoporosis (T score ≤–2.5) and osteopenia (T score –2.5 to –1.0) across age, sex, calcium intake, and menopause. A direct standardization method was used to calculate the age-standardized prevalence rates of osteoporosis and osteopenia. T-score was further categorized into quartiles (T1-T4) by age- and sex-specified groups. ResultsThe prevalence rates of osteopenia and osteoporosis were 40.5% (6633/16,377) and 7.93% (1299/16,377), respectively, and the age-standardized prevalence rates were 27.32% (287,877,129.4/1,053,861,940) and 3.51% (36,974,582.3/1,053,861,940), respectively. There was an increase in osteopenia and osteoporosis prevalence from 21.47% (120/559) to 56.23% (754/1341) and 0.89% (5/559) to 17.23% (231/1341), respectively, as age increased from 18 years to 75 years old. The prevalence rates of osteopenia and osteoporosis were significantly higher in female participants (4238/9645, 43.94% and 1130/9645, 11.72%) than in male participants (2395/6732, 35.58% and 169/6732, 2.51%; P<.001), and in postmenopausal female participants (3638/7493, 48.55% and 1053/7493, 14.05%) than in premenopausal female participants (538/2026, 26.55% and 53/2026, 2.62%; P<.001). In addition, female participants with a history of calcium intake had a lower osteoporosis prevalence rate than female participants without any history of calcium intake in all age groups (P=.004). From low quartile to high quartile of T-score, the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (752/4037, 18.63%; 779/4029, 19.33%; 769/3894, 19.75%; and 869/3879, 22.4%) and dyslipidemia (2228/4036, 55.2%; 2304/4027, 57.21%; 2306/3891, 59.26%; and 2379/3878, 61.35%) were linearly increased (P<.001), while the prevalence of cancer (112/4037, 2.77%; 110/4029, 2.73%; 103/3894, 2.65%; and 77/3879, 1.99%) was decreased (P=.03). ConclusionsOur data imply that as people age, osteopenia and osteoporosis are more common in females than in males, particularly in postmenopausal females than in premenopausal females, and bone mineral density significantly affects the prevalence of chronic diseases. These findings offer information that can be applied to intervention programs meant to prevent or lessen the burden of osteoporosis in China.
Association of Gut Microbiota with Bone Mineral Density in 55-65 Years Old Rural Han Residents of Taizhou City

Abstract:ObjectiveTo examine the relationship between intestinal flora and bone mineral density among rural Han residents aged 55 – 65 years in Taizhou city, Jiangsu province for exploring novel approaches to osteoporosis prevention. MethodsUsing cluster random sampling, we recruited 537 rural Han long term (≥ 20 years) residents aged 55 – 65 years in 3 villages with more compliant followees and high response rate in a cohort for multidisciplinary and multiple diseases research – the Taizhou Longitudinal Study. Questionnaire interview, physical examination, bone density measurement and stool specimen detection were carried out among the selected residents from March 2013 through October 2018. The residents were then assigned into one of the 3 groups with normal bone density, osteopenia and osteoporosis based on bone density measurement according to the diagnostic criteria of World Health Organization. Differences in intestinal flora among the 3 groups and the correlation between intestinal flora and bone density were analyzed. ResultsOf all the participants, 38.55% (207), 44.51% (239), and 16.94% (91) were assessed with normal bone density, osteopenia, and osteoporosis, respectively. After adjusting for variables such as gender, age, body mass index (BMI), smoking and alcohol drinking, the results of partial correlation analysis showed that intake frequency of fresh vegetables (β = – 0.125), fresh fruits (β = – 0.101), meat (β = – 0.098) ) and yogurt (β = – 0.033) were reversely correlated significantly with bone mineral density grouping (all P < 0.05). Compared with those in the normal bone density group, the intestinal abundances of Clostridium, Blautia, Campylobacter, Escherichia, Streptococcus, Actinomyces, Shigella, Anaerostipes, Streptomyces and Atopobium were significantly decreased in both osteopenia and osteoporosis group; but the intestinal abundances of Corynebacterium, Veillonella and Brevundimonas increased in osteopenia and osteoporosis group (all P < 0.05). After adjusting for confound-ing factors such as gender, age, BMI, smoking, alcohol drinking, and intake frequency of fresh vegetable/fresh fruit/ meat/yogurt, the results of unconditional multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the increased intestinal relative abundance of Escherichia (odds ratio [OR] = 0.992, 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 0.985 – 0.999), Shigella (OR = 0.984, 95% CI: 0.970 – 0.998), Blautia (OR = 0.959, 95% CI: 0.924 – 0.996) and Fusicatenibacter (OR = 0.980, 95% CI: 0.962 – 0.998) are protective factors for the occurrence of osteopenia in the residents; the intestinal relative abundance of Faecalibacterium (OR = 1.060, 95% CI: 1.006 – 1.118) is a risk factor for osteoporosis incidence, while that of Mogibacterium (OR = 0.865, 95% CI: 0.763 – 0.981) is a protective factor for osteoporosis incidence. ConclusionIn 55 – 65 years old rural Han residents, intestinal flora may associate with bone density; increased intestinal abundance of Escherichia , Shigella, Blautia, Fusicatenibacter, Faecalibacterium, and Mogibacterium could affect bone mineral density of the population.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the comprehensive nutritional status and diet behavior of middle aged and elderly women with osteoporosis, and thereby to explore the relationship between diet behavior and comprehensive nutritional status. Methods: 311 middle-aged and elderly women with osteoporosis in Chengdu were included in this study. Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) was applied to assess their comprehensive nutritional status. Information of social-demographic characteristics and diet behavior (about meals, snacks and water drinking, etc.) of the subjects was collected by questionnaire. Chi square test was used to assess the differences in nutritional status among patients who have different eating behaviors. Logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the relationship between diet behaviors and comprehensive nutritional status. Results: The mean MNA score of subjects was 25.8±2.5. 20.3% (63/311) of the subjets were at risk of potential malnutrition, but there was no malnourished subjects found. 46.9% (46/311) of the subjects were in good appetite. 95.2% (296/311) of them had a fixed food intake each meal. 65.8% (198/311) of them had snacks every day, and the most common choice was fruit (86.4% (248/287)). 54.8% (165/311) of them had initiative drinking water habits, and the most common choice was plain boiled water (79.9%, 246/308). 76.5% (238/311) of them had daily portable water less than 1 500 ml. After adjusting the effects of age, occupation and education level, bad appetite (OR=3.50, 95%CI: 1.18-10.62), unfixed food intake (OR=7.27, 95%CI: 1.40-35.83), and seldom or never intake of snack (OR=3.71, 95%CI: 1.42-9.72) were risk factors for malnutrition risk, while tea drinking was protective factor(OR=0.31, 95%CI: 0.11-0.93). Conclusion: Risk of potential malnutrition and unhealthy diet behavior among the middle aged and elderly women with osteoporosis should be paid more attention. Unhealtghy diet behavior has a negative effect on their comprehensive nutritional status.

Abstract:Objective To research for the factors influencing the bone mineral density and the measures to prevent and treat the osteoporosis in elderly.Methods With the measure of cluster sampling to study the bone mineral density and urinary calcium, fluorine, manganese, magnesium and hydroxyproline (HOP).Results The bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density(BMD) of female was lower than that of male(P0.01).The urinary calcium was significantly higher in female than that in male(P0.05),but the urinary HOP was lower in female than that in male (P0.01). The urinary fluorine was no significantly difference . It was showed the significantly negative correlation between urinary calcium,munganese,HOP and BMD, and positive correlation between urinary fluorine and BMD and BMC(P0.05 and P0.01). Conclusion The urinary calcium, manganese, HOP fluorine may be the factors influencing the bone mineral density of old people.

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the correlation of dietary patterns with low muscle mass, strength and quality in Chinese adults. Methods: Based on the second resurvey of China Kadoorie Biobank, factor analysis was conducted to derive dietary patterns from 20 food groups. Low muscle mass, strength, and quality were defined as the sex-specific lowest quintile of appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI), total skeletal muscle mass index (TSMI), handgrip strength and arm muscle quality (AMQ) according to Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia recommendations. Logistic regression models were used to evaluate the correlation of dietary patterns with low muscle mass, strength, and quality. Results: Two major dietary patterns were extracted. The balanced dietary pattern was characterized by the intake of a variety of foods, whereas the rice-meat dietary pattern was characterized by high intakes of rice, meat, poultry and fish. Individuals who had the highest quintile score of the balanced dietary pattern were less likely to have low TSMI, handgrip strength or AMQ(OR=0.83, 95%CI: 0.74-0.95 for low TSMI; OR=0.64, 95%CI: 0.56-0.74 for low handgrip strength; OR=0.82, 95%CI: 0.72-0.93 for low AMQ; for trend P<0.05). And those who scored higher on the rice-meat dietary pattern had lower risk of low muscle mass and strength (OR=0.67, 95%CI: 0.55-0.82 for low ASMI; OR=0.69, 95%CI: 0.56-0.85 for low TSMI; OR=0.74, 95%CI: 0.60-0.91 for low handgrip strength; for trend P<0.05). Conclusion: Individuals followed the balanced dietary pattern, as well as those who followed the rice-meat dietary pattern, had better levels of skeletal muscle mass, strength and quality.

Abstract:Objective To understand the status of osteoporosis in the middle?aged and elderly people in a community in Shanghai Xinzhuang District, to analyze the risk factors of the disease, and to provide the basis for future work in prevention of osteoporosis. Methods Age, sex, height, weight, diet, exercise, chronic disease history, and family history were obtained from the study population using questionnaire survey and in?place measurement. Bone mineral density was detected using an ultrasound absorptiometry ( Sahara model, HOLOGIC, US) . Results In 351 cases of the elderly, incidence of osteoporosis was 11?96%, in which 17?11% in males and 11?62% in females, respectively. Logistic regression analysis showed that age, body mass index, activity level, smoking, milk intake, and family history of humpback were closely correlated with osteoporosis, with statistically significance. Conclusion Osteoporosis in the elderly community is correlated with a variety of factors in the middle?aged and elderly people in Shanghai Xinzhuang District. The controllable factors include BMI, activity level, smoking, and milk intake.
