Abstract:Owing to the pandemic caused by the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19), several universities have closed their campuses for preventing the spread of infection. Consequently, the university classes are being held over the Internet, and students attend these classes from their homes. While the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to be prolonged, the online-centric lifestyle has raised concerns about secondary health issues caused by reduced physical activity (PA). However, the actual status of PA among university students has not yet been examined in Japan. Hence, in this study, we collected daily PA data (including the data corresponding to the number of steps taken and the data associated with six types of activities) by employing smartphones and thereby analyzed the changes in the PA of university students. The PA data were collected over a period of ten weeks from 305 first-year university students who were attending a mandatory class of physical education at the university. The obtained results indicate that compared to the average number of steps taken before the COVID-19 pandemic (6474.87 steps), the average number of steps taken after the COVID-19 pandemic (3522.5 steps) has decreased by 45.6%. Furthermore, the decrease in commuting time (7 AM to 10 AM), classroom time, and extracurricular activity time (11 AM to 12 AM) has led to a decrease in PA on weekdays owing to reduced unplanned exercise opportunities and has caused an increase in the duration of being in the stationary state in the course of daily life.

Abstract:[Purpose] Behavioral restrictions during the corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may have affected the physical activity levels of college students. We aimed to characterize the body composition and physical activity of college students during these behavioral restrictions. [Participants and Methods] The body composition (height, weight, body mass index, body fat mass, body fat percentage, total body muscle mass, free-fat muscle index [FFMI], and fat mass index [FMI]), physical activity, amount the of walking, amount of daily activity, and the number of steps were measured in 52 university students. [Results] For both male and females, the number of steps taken was lower than the average steps reported by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. In males, FFMI had a strong positive correlation with physical activity, amount of walking, and the number of steps taken. In females, FFMI had a strong positive correlation with physical activity and the amount of walking, as well as a moderate positive correlation with the amount of daily activity. [Conclusion] Since physical activity and walking of university students during COVID-19 affect FFMI, it is necessary to develop an exercise program that considers behavioral patterns.
Exploring Post COVID-19 Outbreak Intradaily Mobility Pattern Change in College Students: a GPS-focused Smartphone Sensing Study

Abstract:With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, most colleges and universities move to restrict campus activities, reduce indoor gatherings and move instruction online. These changes required that students adapt and alter their daily routines accordingly. To investigate patterns associated with these behavioral changes, we collected smartphone sensing data using the Beiwe platform from two groups of undergraduate students at a major North American university, one from January to March of 2020 (74 participants), the other from May to August (52 participants), to observe the differences in students' daily life patterns before and after the start of the pandemic. In this paper, we focus on the mobility patterns evidenced by GPS signal tracking from the students' smartphones and report findings using several analytical methods including principal component analysis, circadian rhythm analysis, and predictive modeling of perceived sadness levels using mobility-based digital metrics. Our findings suggest that compared to the pre-COVID group, students in the mid-COVID group generally (1) registered a greater amount of midday movement than movement in the morning (8-10am) and in the evening (7-9pm), as opposed to the other way around; (2) exhibited significantly less intradaily variability in their daily movement, and (3) had a significant lower correlation between their mobility patterns and negative mood.

Abstract:Purpose: This study was to estimate the impact of COVID-19 on sedentary behavior for Chinese university students during the pandemic period, as well as explore how sedentary behavior changed as a function of gender. Methods: We conducted an online questionnaire (the Sedentary Behavior Questionnaire) on 1487 (947 males & 513 females; Age 19.72± 1.32yr., BMI = 21.12 ± 4.50) students from one university in China during the pandemic period and students retrospectively recalled pre-pandemic physical activity levels (March 29- April 15, 2020). Sedentary behavior was measured using the short version of the Sedentary Behavior Questionnaire (SBQ). Sedentary behavior of social isolation in a typical week during the COVID-19 pandemic period and before the COVID-19 pandemic were measured based on SBQ. The data were analyzed using a paired-samples t-test. Chi-square tests were to compare categorical variables. Results: Before the COVID-19, on weekdays, survey participants averaged engaged in 11.41 (SD =3.93) hours of SB, 10.97 (SD = 3.85) hours of SB in males, 12.25 (SD =3.94) hours of SB in females; on weekends, survey participants averaged engaged in 13.18 (SD =4.06) hours of SB, 12.74 (SD = 3.96) hours of SB in males, 14.04 (SD =4.11) hours of SB in females. During the COVID-19, on weekdays, survey participants averaged engaged in 13.34 (SD =3.78) hours of SB, 12.90 (SD = 3.67) hours of SB in males, 14.19 (SD =3.83) hours of SB in females; on weekends, survey participants averaged engaged in 14.48 (SD =3.93) hours of SB, 14.10 (SD = 3.81) hours of SB in males, 15.22 (SD =4.04) hours of SB in females. Overall, on weekdays, COVID-19 on average appeared to increase SB by 1.93 (16.91%↑, 95% CI = 1.74, 2.12) hours, an increase in daily total SB by 1.92 (17.50%↑, 95% CI = 1.92, 2.15) hours for males, and an increase 1.94 (15.84%↑, 95% CI = 1.62, 2.27) hours in females. On weekends, COVID-19 on average appeared to increase SB by 1.30 (9.86%↑, 95% CI = 1.12, 1.48) hours, an increase in daily total SB by 1.36 (10.68%↑, 95% CI = 1.13, 1.58) hours for males, and an increase 1.18 (8.40%↑, 95% CI = 0.87, 1.50) hours in females. Conclusions: The COVID-19 led to an increase in sedentary behavior of Chinese university students. The total sedentary time of female students per week was higher than that of male students. Public policy action might be urgently needed to decrease the sedentary behavior of Chinese university students.

Abstract:The research that links excessive screen time to adverse health outcomes is based on self-reported screen use. Few studies have documented how passively-sensed smartphone and app use relate to health behaviors like activity and sitting. Furthermore, they have not considered that daily fluctuations in smartphone/app use may have different relationships to these behaviors than a person's usual smartphone/app use. This study evaluated whether physical activity or sedentary (sitting) behavior are associated with either smartphone screen time or specific smartphone app use by adolescents and young adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. Adolescents and young adults aged 13–29 years wore activPAL4 micro activity monitors while their smartphones logged daily screen time and app use durations for nine days. Data were collected in 2020–2021 and analyzed in 2022–2023. Participants ( N = 125) had a mean (SD) age of 19.7 (4.3) years. Participants' usual smartphone screen time was negatively associated with daily step counts. Daily deviations in smartphone screen time were negatively associated with daily step counts and moderate-vigorous physical activity durations. Time spent on Instagram, YouTube and, to a lesser extent, TikTok were linked with reduced activity levels. Daily sedentary behavior was not associated with usual or daily screen time. Interventions to promote physical activity during the transition into adulthood may benefit from limiting excessive smartphone screen time. Specific intervention targets could include limiting use of apps with infinite scrolling feeds algorithmically tuned to maintain user engagement, such as Instagram, YouTube and TikTok.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Promoting students’ physical activity is a global public health challenge. Physical inactivity and sedentary behaviors have been regarded as causing harmful chronic diseases in young adults’ lifespan. However, high engagement in mobile technology for students may provide opportunities to help change unhealthy behaviors. Therefore, school sectors may play an important key role, such as implementing mobile health interventions to change students’ unhealthy behaviors and promoting regular physical activity, especially during the transition from adolescence to young adulthood. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore university students’ daily exercise patterns as a result of a school-based intervention using an mHealth app. METHODS Students’ physical exercise participation was recorded using a smart phone app. Involving 4,152 university freshmen (1,476 males, 2,676 females), 335,898 of their exercise records were analyzed (mean frequency of 38.2 ±16.10 for males, 45.1±10.81 for females) during the 2018-2019 semester. RESULTS Under the school-based intervention project, student exercise on Friday and Saturday was lower than that on other days, which indicated that participation in exercise was more active on weekdays than on weekends. Among the participants who completed the requirement set by the school intervention project, both males and females used weekends to do exercise. Overweight male university students participated in physical activity more than the school intervention project requirement, and their exercise duration was found to be significantly higher than that of other participants. CONCLUSIONS Understanding the weekly daily exercise patterns of youth as a result of the mHealth app intervention can benefit the development of efficient and flexible projects to promote young people’s physical health and improve their regular exercise participation.
Determining factors of physical activity and sedentary behaviour in university students during the COVID-19 pandemic: A longitudinal study

Abstract:Introduction Historically, university students demonstrate poor movement behaviours that could negatively impact current and future health. Recent literature has focused on identifying determinants of physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviour (SB) in this population to inform the development of intervention strategies. However, the COVID-19 pandemic substantially restricted movement behaviours in this population, meaning findings of previous research may no longer be applicable within the current societal context. The present study explored the longitudinal relationships between pre-pandemic psychological, behavioural and anthropometric factors, and the movement behaviours of UK university students nine months following the outbreak of COVID-19. Methods Mental wellbeing (MWB), perceived stress (PS), body mass index (BMI), SB, and PA were assessed using an online self-report survey in 255 students prior to (October 2019) and nine months following (October 2020) the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in the UK. Path analysis was utilised to test relationships between pre-COVID mental wellbeing, perceived stress and BMI, and movement behaviours during the pandemic. Results The fit of the path analysis model was good ( χ 2 = 0.01; CMIN = 0.10, CFI = 1.00, RMSEA = 0.00). Pre-covid MWB and PS positively influenced PA ( β = 0.29; β = 0.24; P < 0.01) but not SB ( β = -0.10; β = 0.00; P = 0.79) during the pandemic. Additionally, pre-pandemic SB and PA positively influenced SB and PA during the pandemic respectively (SB: β = 0.26; P < 0.01) (PA: β = 0.55; P < 0.01). Pre-pandemic BMI did not influence any measured variable during the pandemic (PA: β = 0.03 and P = 0.29; SB: β = 0.06 and P = 0.56), and there was no mediating effect of PA on SB during the pandemic ( β = -0.26; P = 0.14). Conclusion These findings indicate that pre-covid mental health and movement behaviours had a direct positive influence on PA during the pandemic, but not SB. This longitudinal study demonstrates the influence that prior psychological and behavioural factors have in determining university students’ response to periods of elevated stress and uncertainty, furthering our understanding of determinants of health-related behaviours in students.

Abstract:Objectives: In this study, we estimated the impact of COVID-19 on physical activity (PA) for Chinese university students during the pandemic period. Methods: The International Physical Activity Questionnaire was completed online by 1487 students (947 males and 513 females; age 19.72 ± 1.32 years, BMI = 21.12 ± 4.50) from one university in China during the pandemic period, and students retrospectively recalled pre-pandemic PA levels (March 29- April 15, 2020). We analyzed the data using a paired-samples t-test. Results: Overall, COVID-19 produced a 27.89% reduction in total weekly minutes (40.62) of vigorous PA, a 43.38% reduction in total weekly minutes (73.92) of moderate PA, and a 24.36% reduction in total weekly minutes of walking (44.69). Results by sex showed that moderate PA decreased the most, by 47.15% (males) and 37.13% (females), and total PA decreased by 48.29% (males) and 40.18% (females). Conclusions: COVID-19 led to a reduction in PA among Chinese university students. PA decreased more for male than female students. Public policy action might be needed to increase the level of PA of Chinese university students.

Abstract:Background The COVID-19 pandemic led to the implementation of worldwide restrictive measures to reduce social contact and viral spread. These measures have been reported to have a negative effect on physical activity (PA). Studies of PA during the pandemic have primarily used self-reported data. The single academic study that used tracked data did not report on demographics. Objective This study aimed to explore patterns of smartphone-tracked activity before, during, and immediately after lockdown in the United Kingdom, and examine differences by sociodemographic characteristics and prior levels of PA. Methods Tracked longitudinal weekly minutes of PA were captured using the BetterPoints smartphone app between January and June 2020. Data were plotted by week, demographics, and activity levels at baseline. Nonparametric tests of difference were used to assess mean and median weekly minutes of activity at significant points before and during the lockdown, and as the lockdown was eased. Changes over time by demographics (age, gender, Index of Multiple Deprivation, baseline activity levels) were examined using generalized estimating equations (GEEs). Results There were 5395 users with a mean age of 41 years (SD 12) and 61% (n=3274) were female. At baseline, 26% (n=1422) of users were inactive, 23% (n=1240) were fairly active, and 51% (n=2733) were active. There was a relatively even spread across deprivation deciles (31% [n=1693] in the least deprived deciles and 23% in the most [n=1261]). We found significant changes in PA from the week before the first case of COVID-19 was announced (baseline) to the week that social distancing restrictions were relaxed (Friedman test: χ22=2331, P 65 years appeared to remain more active throughout and increased their activity levels as soon as lockdown was eased. Levels of PA among those classed as active at baseline showed a larger drop compared with those considered to be fairly active or inactive. Socioeconomic group and gender did not appear to be associated with changes in PA. Conclusions Our tracked PA data suggests a significant drop in PA during the United Kingdom’s COVID-19 lockdown. Significant differences by age group and prior PA levels suggests that the government’s response to COVID-19 needs to be sensitive to these individual differences and the government should react accordingly. Specifically, it should consider the impact on younger age groups, encourage everyone to increase their PA, and not assume that people will recover prior levels of PA on their own.

Abstract:PURPOSE: This study was to estimate the impact of COVID-19 on physical activity (PA) for Chinese university student during the pandemic lockdown period. METHODS: We conducted a on-line questionnaire on 1487 (947males & 513 females; Age 19.7 ± 1.3 yr., Height = 172.2 ± 8.2 cm, Weight = 65.9 ± 15.6 kg, BMI = 21.1 ± 4.5) college students from one university in China during the pandemic period and students retrospectively recalled pre-pandemic PA levels (Mar 29- April 15, 2020). PA was measured using the short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), which has been validated in China to measure physical activity. PA of social isolation in the last week during the COVID-19 pandemic period and before the COVID-19 pandemic were measured based on IPAQ. The data were analyzed using paired-samples t-test. RESULTS: Before the COVID-19, survey participants on averaged engaged in 136.2 (SD =115.6) minutes of vigorous physical activity, 179.5 (SD = 138.1) minutes of moderate physical activity, 284.1 (SD = 205.4) minutes MVPA, walked for 179.1 (SD = 144.6) minutes, respectively. During the COVID-19, survey participants on average engaged in 105.6 (SD =92.7) minutes of vigorous physical activity, 95.1 (SD = 89.2) minutes of moderate physical activity, 143.5 (SD = 126.8) minutes MVPA, walked for 140.1 (SD = 142.5) minutes, respectively. Overall, the COVID-19 discouraged a reduction in weekly total minutes of vigorous physical activity by 40.6 (29.8%↓, SD =112.2), a reduction in weekly total minutes of moderate physical activity by 73.9 (41.1%↓, SD =113.4), a reduction in weekly total minutes of MVPA by 141.3 (49.7%↓, SD =196.6), a reduction in weekly total minutes of walking by 44.6 (24.9↓, SD =176.6), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 lockdown was associated with a reduction of physical activity among Chinese college students.

Abstract:The temporary closure of learning institutions during the COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically reduced the physical activity of students across all ages. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of physical inactivity and the patterns of physical activity among university students in confinement. This cross-sectional study involved 147 Malaysian students and 107 Indonesian students. Body weight before the pandemic and during the pandemic was self-reported by the respondents, and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF) was used to assess the physical activity and sedentary behavior of the respondents. The findings revealed that 79.6% of Malaysians and 77.6% of Indonesians were physically active during the confinement. There was no significant difference (p < 0.05) in the duration devoted to vigorous-intensity activity (MMalaysian = 0.00 MET minutes/week and MIndonesian = 480.00 MET minutes/week) and moderate-intensity activity (MMalaysian = 0.00 MET minutes/week and MIndonesian = 0.00 MET minutes/week) among the studied population. During the pandemic, Malaysian students (M = 1386.00 MET minutes/week) devoted a significantly higher duration to walking (M = 1386.00 MET minutes/week) and sedentary behavior (9.16 ± 4.47 h/day) than Indonesian students (M = 990.00 MET minutes/week and sedentary behavior = 7.85 ± 4.27 h/day). Overall, no significant difference was noted in the total physical activity of Malaysian and Indonesian students during the pandemic (MMalaysian = 2826.00 MET minutes/week and MIndonesian = 1782.00 MET minutes/week). Findings from Spearman’s rank correlation test suggested that there was a weak inverse correlation between the duration engaged in vigorous-intensity activity and weight change among the Malaysian students (rs = −0.199, p = 0.016), after adjusting for gender and age. Overall, the closure of learning institutions and exercise facilities has further prevented individuals from complying with the WHO recommendation of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity during the period of home confinement.

Abstract:PURPOSE To evaluate the influence of surface treatment on the shear bond strength between a Co-Cr alloy and two ceramics. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-eight metal cylinders were made (thickness: 4 mm, height: 3.7 mm) according ISO TR 11405. The 48 metallic cylinders were divided into four groups (n = 12), according to the veneering ceramic (StarLight Ceram and Duceram Kiss) and surface treatments: air-particle abrasion with Al(2)O(3) or tungsten drill (W). Gr1: StarLight + Al(2)O(3); Gr2: StarLight + W; Gr3: Duceram + Al(2)O(3); and Gr4: Duceram + W. The specimens were aged using thermal cycling (3000x, 5 to 55 degrees C, dwell time: 30 seconds, transfer time: 2 seconds). The shear test was performed with a universal testing machine, using a load cell of 100 kg (speed: 0.5 mm/min) and a specific device. The bond strength data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's test (5%), and the failure modes were analyzed using an optical microscope (30x). RESULTS The means and standard deviations of the shear bond strengths were (MPa): G1 (57.97 +/- 11.34); G2 (40.62 +/- 12.96); G3 (47.09 +/- 13.19); and G4 (36.80 +/- 8.86). Ceramic (p= 0.03252) and surface treatment (p= 0.0002) significantly affected the mean bond strength values. CONCLUSIONS Air-particle abrasion with Al(2)O(3) improved the shear bond strength between metal and ceramics used.

Abstract:We present a fast classification technique for document images such as Web pages and for information retrieval. The technique involves performing all computations off-line and building the results into tables, so that during actual classification the only operations performed are simple table-lookups. We also introduce a distortion measure that is suitable for classification. Results show that the probability of misclassification for table-lookup gives good performance and the implementation is fast.
How COVID-19 lockdown and reopening affected daily steps: evidence based on 164,630 person-days of prospectively collected data from Shanghai, China

Abstract:Background: COVID-19 lockdowns may lead to physical inactivity, a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases. This study aims to determine: 1) the trajectory in daily step counts before, during and after the lockdown in China, and 2) the characteristics associated with the trajectories. Methods: From December 2019 to July 2020, smartphone-based step counts were continuously collected in 815 Chinese adults residing in Shanghai over 202 days across three phases: before, during, and after the lockdown. Participant characteristics were reported, and height, weight and body composition measured before the lockdown. A 'sharp' regression discontinuity design with cluster robust standard errors was used to test the effect of the lockdown and reopening on daily steps and a linear mixed model was used to examine the characteristics associated with trajectories during the observed period. Results: Based on 164,630 person-days of data, we found a sharp decline in daily step counts upon the lockdown (24/01/2020) by an average of 3796 (SE = 88) steps, followed by a significant trend of increase by 34 steps/day (SE = 2.5; p < .001) until the end of the lockdown (22/03/2020). This increasing trend continued into the reopening phase at a slower rate of 5 steps per day (SE = 2.3; p = 0.029). Those who were older, married, university educated, insufficiently active, had an 'at risk' body composition, and those in the control group, were slower at recovering step counts during the lockdown, and those who were older, married, without university education and with an 'at risk' body composition recovered step counts at a slower pace after the reopening. Conclusions: Despite later increases in step counts, COVID-19 lockdown led to a sustained period of reduced physical activity, which may have adverse health implications. Governments and health professionals around the world should continue to encourage and facilitate physical activity during the pandemic.
Physical Activity and Health of Middle-Aged and Older Japanese Across the COVID-19 Pandemic: Differential Outcomes Highlight a Problematic Life Stage

Abstract:Introduction : COVID-19 caused major disruptions across the super-aged nation of Japan, yet few studies explored temporal changes among middle-aged and older cohorts from baseline to the height of community transmission. Changes in physical activity and sedentary behavior during global pandemics may alter patterns of morbidity and mortality among susceptible aging populations. Objectives : This study investigated patterns of physical activity, sitting behavior, and health among representative samples of middle-aged and older adults in Tokyo before and during the pandemic. Methods : Repeated online surveys were conducted with quota samples of 800 Tokyo residents in 2019 and 2021 using validated Japanese-language measures, including the short form-International Physical Activity Questionnaire and the Basic Ecological Health Scale-6. Statistical analyses included comparative evaluations of activity parameters by age cohort, gender, and selected covariates. Statistical tests included the Kruskal–Wallis test, Mann–Whitney U test, chi-square test for Independence and Hierarchical Regression. Results : Over 34% of respondents were inactive at each data collection point, and 72% reported negative impacts of COVID-19 on their physical activities. Older adults showed no significant changes in their activity and sitting behavior and reported better health compared with those in middle age across the pandemic. Middle-aged males reported a significant decline in total activity of 33% across the pandemic period ( U = 16,958, z = −2.64, p = .008, r = .13). Middle-aged females reported the lowest levels of physical activity, and health, and showed a 29% increase in sitting behavior across the pandemic ( U = 16,925, z = −2.68, p = .007, r = .13). Subjective health status was consistently associated with higher overall activity and walking before and during the pandemic. Conclusion : Differential outcomes were identified between age and gender regarding health, physical activity, walking, and sitting across the pandemic with significantly worse impacts reported among middle-aged samples. Implications : These results have implications for healthy transitions to later life and the design of postpandemic interventions to address activity opportunities in Japan.

Abstract:The resolution of medical ultrasound systems is usually characterized by the width of the mainlobe, typically the full width at half maximum (FWHM), in beamplots. The FWHM has, however, been shown to sometimes provide misleading information about systems. The concept of "cystic resolution" in which performance is quantified as the size of the void that produces a specified contrast, has been previously introduced to medical ultrasound. We extend the concept and develop a general metric to analyze the 3D broadband performance of arbitrary ultrasound systems. We provide an example of application in which we compare the performance of a conventional system using a 1D array and time delay beamforming of radiofrequency (RF) data to that of a system based on a 2D array that focuses solely via phase rotation of complex I/Q data formed by directly sampling the received RF signal.
The Impact of Isolation Measures Due to COVID-19 on Energy Intake and Physical Activity Levels in Australian University Students

Abstract:The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic resulted in physical isolation measures in many parts of the world. In Australia, nationwide restrictions included staying at home, unless seeking medical care, providing care, purchasing food, undertaking exercise, or attending work in an essential service. All undergraduate university classes transitioned to online, mostly home-based learning. We, therefore, examined the effect of isolation measures during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia (March/April) on diet (24-h recall) and physical activity (Active Australia Survey) patterns in third-year biomedical students. Findings were compared with students enrolled in the same course in the previous two years. In females, but not males, energy intake was ~20% greater during the pandemic, and snacking frequency and energy density of consumed snacks also increased compared with 2018 and 2019. Physical activity was impacted for both sexes during the pandemic with ~30% fewer students achieving “sufficient” levels of activity, defined by at least 150 min over at least five sessions, compared with the previous two years. In a follow-up study six to eight weeks later (14–18% response rate), during gradual easing of nationwide restrictions albeit continued gym closures and online learning, higher energy intake in females and reduced physical activity levels in both sexes persisted. These data demonstrate the health impacts of isolation measures, with the potential to affect long-term diet and activity behaviours.

Correlation and Change in Physical Activity and Physical Fitness across Four Years of College Students after One Year of COVID-19 Lockdown

Abstract:The relationship between physical activity (PA) and physical fitness (PF) has been well established among college students. However, the impact of this relationship after 1 year of COVID-19 pandemic lockdown measures is unclear. This study aimed to test the relationship between PA and PF, exploring the trend across four years, the different components of PF related to PA, and their determinants, by analyzing specific items. A total of 1506 university students (19.48 ± 1.35 years old, 55.8% male) in years 1–4 at two comprehensive universities in Shanghai were recruited after one year of COVID restrictions and asked to complete the PF measurements and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ Chinese Short version). The PA level is categorized into three types of intensity (low-moderate-high), and the level of PF is represented by the total test score of each item. Results show that PA was significantly positively correlated with PF; PA levels significantly predicted 1000m-run, 50m-sprint, and standing-long-jump in males, and 800m-sprint and sit-ups in females. Males predominantly had high-intensity PA, whereas females maintained moderate-intensity PA over four academic years. Meanwhile, PA and PF both trended downward as academic years increased in males and females, which could be attributed to a decline in high-intensity PA. The following two recommendations were obtained from the study: first, college students should engage in high-intensity PA activities after the end of the epidemic. Second, colleges offer physical education classes for four academic years of college students to promote PA and PF.

Abstract:PURPOSE: This study was to estimate the impact of COVID-19 on sedentary behavior (SB) among Chinese college students. METHODS: We conducted an on-line questionnaire on 1487 (947 males & 513 females; Age 19.7 ± 1.3 yr., Height = 172.2 ± 8.2 cm, Weight = 65.9 ± 15.6 kg, BMI = 21.1 ± 4.5) college students and students retrospectively recalled pre-pandemic SB levels from one university in China during the pandemic lockdown period (Mar 29- April 15, 2020). The short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) which has been validated in China was used to measure SB. Hours of SB in the last week were collected during COVID-19 outbreak in China based on the answer to one question from the IPAQ: “During the last 7 days, how much time did you usually spend sitting on one of those day?” To create a “pre-pandemic baseline”, participants recalled hours of SB based on the answer to a new question added to the IPAQ: “how much time did you usually spend sitting on one day before COVID-19?” The data were analyzed using paired-samples t-test. RESULTS: Before COVID-19, survey participants on average engaged in 9.2 (SD =3.0) hours of SB, 9.2 (SD = 2.9) hours of SB in males, 9.3 (SD =3.2) hours of SB in females. During COVID-19, survey participants on averaged engaged in 10.2 (SD =2.7) hours of SB, 10.2 (SD = 2.7) hours of SB in male, 10.2 (SD =2.8) hours of SB in female, respectively. Overall, COVID-19 on average appeared to increase SB by 1.0 (SD =2.6) hour, an increase in daily total SB by 1.0 (SD =2.6) hour for males, and an increase 0.8 (SD =2.5) hour in females. CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 lockdown was associated with an increase of SB among Chinese college students, and the impact on males was more significant than females.

Abstract:Introduction: Physical activity is one of the intrinsic elements of human life. Systematic exercise is an important factor in preventing heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Lack of exercise increases the risk of non-communicable disease (NCD) and death worldwide. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic aggravated the problem of the lack of adequate amounts of physical exertion, especially among students. With the introduction of distance learning, they were forced to change their lifestyle, and the physical activity that they had undertaken so far has, in most cases, been reduced or stopped altogether. Aim: In our study, we aimed to find out how students evaluate the quality of life and what actions they take for health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Material and methods: The study was conducted using the Google online form on student groups and websites using the proprietary survey and the SF-36 quality of life questionnaire. The study group consisted of 162 people (107 women and 55 men). The respondents ranged in age from 19 to 25 years old. Results: The study showed that as many as 77.8% of students undertook various forms of physical activity before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, the dangers and restrictions related to the coronavirus, as well as the decrease in mood resulting from this situation, forced nearly half of the students participating in the study to change their forms of physical activity. In most cases, restrictions on access to various forms of recreation discouraged the respondents from engaging in it. As many as 70.4% of the respondents stated that they had experienced health and emotional problems. In most cases, it influenced the performance of daily tasks, contacts with family, friends, neighbors or other social groups. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic has forced a significant number of students to modify their lifestyle, which has resulted in the reduction or abandonment of physical exercise. The research confirmed the relationship between physical activity and the sense of quality of life.
