Abstract:The pervasive issue of global warming has propelled the continued empirical efforts by policymakers and research pundits geared towards finding sustainable solutions to salvaging the ecosystem. Consequently, this study evaluates the heterogenous impacts of technological innovation, sustainable energy, and financial development on environmental sustainability captured by CO2 emissions, methane emissions, and nitrous oxide emissions in the BRICS countries from 1995 to 2020. The study employs second-generation estimators comprising quantile regression (QR), augmented mean (AMG), common correlation effect group mean (CCEMG), and cross-sectional ARDL (CS-ARDL). The main findings show that among the indicators of technological innovation, high technology exports, ICT goods exports, and ICT services exports drive sustainable environment in the long run whereas environmental-related technology promotes both in the short run and long run. The moderating impacts of sustainable energy are evident through wind energy, solar energy, and hydrogen technology. Conversely, financial development measured by broad money and domestic credits to private sector hinders environmental sustainability. More so, the covariates entailing economic growth, population growth, poverty, and trade openness escalate the stock of pollutants. The empirical regularity of the main estimators is supported by outcomes of QR across the low, middle, and upper quantiles. On the policy front, the study recommends promoting initiatives that drive technology and renewable energy to enhance the sustainability of the BRICS' environment.

Abstract:In recent years, addressing the issue of carbon emissions has gained significant attention in the field of environmental sustainability. This study aims to contribute to the existing literature by investigating the interplay between eco-innovation, international trade, energy productivity, and consumption-based carbon emissions in the context of the BRICS economies. Using data spanning the period from 1990 to 2020, we employ advanced methodological techniques to overcome challenges associated with cross-section dependency, non-stationarity, and heterogeneity. The results of our study provide compelling evidence of a long-term cointegrating association between eco-innovation, energy productivity, economic growth, imports, exports and consumption-based carbon emissions. The results reveal that eco-innovations, exports, and energy productivity are associated with reductions in CO2 emissions. Conversely, imports and GDP growth contribute to higher CO2 emissions. Our findings have significant implications for policymakers, businesses, and stakeholders involved in shaping environmental policies and sustainable development strategies. The observed negative correlations between eco-innovation, exports, energy productivity, and consumption-based carbon emissions offer a clear channel for mitigating environmental pollution. By prioritizing and promoting eco-innovation initiatives, encouraging sustainable exports, and enhancing energy productivity, policymakers can effectively reduce carbon emissions and foster sustainable economic growth.Graphical abstract

Abstract:In contemporary times, emerging economies are intended to achieve higher economic growth via foreign direct investment and technological innovation. However, due to increased environmental challenges, these economies are adopting green energy as the key source of environmental recovery and net zero emissions. The present study investigates the influence of FDI, technological innovation, green energy, and trade on carbon emissions in BRICS economies during 1990–2022. This study also considers the role of economic expansion in identifying the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC). Using several panel diagnostic and cointegration tests, this study validates the slope heterogeneity and the existence of the cointegration between variables. Due to the non-normal data dispersion, this study uses novel moments quantile regression, while bootstrap quantile regression is used for the robustness. The results examined asserted the presence of the EKC hypothesis in the region, where the initial growth enhances emissions while after reaching at a threshold level, the emission level tends to reduce and environmental quality improves. Besides, this study observed that foreign trade and technological innovation are the key drivers of environmental degradation as these indicators significantly enhances pollution emissions. In contrast, foreign investment, energy efficiency, renewable electricity output, and renewable's consumption significantly improve environmental quality by declining carbon emissions. Following the empirical results, the policy recommendations asserted enhanced investment in renewable and energy efficiency sectors while attracting more foreign investment for sustainable development.

Abstract:Attaining cleaner production is a major challenge for BRICS economies. In this context, this study explores the effect of financial globalization on renewable energy consumption in BRICS economies from 1990 to 2018. It is probably the first research to study the linkage between financial globalization and renewable energy consumption. Therefore, this research adds to the current literature by presenting new empiric evidence on how financial globalization, in conjunction with environmental innovations, energy productivity, energy prices, and economic growth, affect renewable energy consumption in BRICS economies. In doing so, this research utilized novel econometric methods such as continuously updated fully modified (CUP-FM) and continuously updated bias-corrected (CUP-BC) techniques to evaluate the long-run results. The empirical findings show that financial globalization, environmental innovation, energy productivity, and energy prices promote renewable energy consumption. In contrast, economic growth impedes renewable energy consumption. This study suggests that governments and policymakers in BRICS countries should consider financial globalization and the increasing role of environmental innovations to increase the renewable energy share, which can be the appropriate solutions to the environmental challenges and achieve the Paris Climate Agreement’s goals. BRICS economies require speeding up permits for renewable energy projects, raising tax credits, including substantially more grants and loans, extending timelines for pandemic-affected projects, and investing directly in emerging clean energy sources.

Abstract:Over the last few decades, environmental deterioration has accelerated significantly. Environmental degradation has been a subject of research across the world because of its impact on billions of people. However, there has been no international agreement on lowering the utilization of energy and CO2 emissions (CO2), while demand for fossil fuels grows in emerging economies. On the other hand, the recent COP26 summit brought all parties together to accelerate action toward reaching the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Although previous research shows that international trade promotes positive socioeconomic outcomes, other experts argue that it contributes to natural resource shortages and ecological deterioration. Thus, the current research considers the effect of international trade, renewable energy use and technological innovation on consumption-based carbon emissions (CCO2), coupled with the role of financial development and economic growth in the BRICS economies between 1990 and 2018. Moreover, this research utilizes the common correlated effects mean group (CCEMG), augmented mean group (AMG) and Dumitrescu and Hurlin (2012) causality methods to assess these interrelationships. The study findings reveal that renewable energy use, exports and technological innovation mitigate CCO2, whereas economic growth and imports trigger CCO2 in the BRICS economies. The panel causality outcomes also reveal that all the variables except financial development can predict CCO2 emissions. Based on the study findings, we recommend the adoption of policies, regulations and the development of legislative frameworks that promote technological innovation and the shift toward sustainable energy.

Abstract:With rising worldwide concerns about climate change and environmental sustainability, it is crucial to understand the link between energy usage, technological innovation, and CO2 emissions. Therefore, this study examines the complex link between energy consumption, technological innovation, and CO2 emissions in the BRICS economies over the time period from 1990 to 2022. To understand the BRICS dynamics and environmental sustainability, the Panel Mean Group Autoregressive Distributed Lag (PMG-ARDL) model is used. The results indicate a significant positive relationship between energy consumption and CO2 emissions, implying that BRICS economies experience a rise in CO2 output due to increased energy usage. Simultaneously, the research reveals an inverse connection between technological innovation and CO2 emissions. In this regard, technological advances are crucial for sustainable growth and environmental protection in the region. This research provides useful insights into the intricate interaction of factors that influence CO2 emissions in developing nations.

Abstract:The scholars of environmental economics have attempted the investigation of the impact of foreign direct investment-growth nexus, but they have missed the essential role played by technological innovation and financial development regarding the environmental costs. The notable economic growth and the consequent speedy process of urbanization in BRICS countries have brought about colossal escalation of energy needs leading to environmental degradation. The present study endeavors to explore the effect of foreign direct investment, technological innovation, and financial development on carbon emissions in BRICS member countries, with data from 1990 to 2017. The results verify a strong cross-sectional dependence within the panel countries. The Augmented Mean Group (AMG) estimator shows that foreign direct investment, technological innovation, and financial development in the BRICS countries possess a negative and statistically significant long-run association with CO2 emissions, while economic growth, trade openness, urbanization, and energy use are found to contribute statistically significant and positive with carbon emissions. The current study chose to employ the Dumitrescu and Hurlin panel causality test for examining the direction of causality. Findings reveal a bidirectional long-run causality running among financial development, economic growth, trade openness, urbanization, energy use, and CO2 emissions; on the contrary, unidirectional causality is found between foreign direct investment and carbon emissions. Consequently, for the BRICS member countries, the development of industries, financial institutions, and development of technological innovation are required to attract quality foreign direct investment. Moreover, urbanization contributes enormously to environmental degradation and necessitates urgent policy responses in these countries.

Abstract:To ensure sustainability, it is necessary to achieve carbon emission mitigation goals without compromising economic growth. Assessing whether the BRICS countries, which are rapidly growing in terms of economy and carbon emissions, are moving toward achieving sustainable developing goals, through important policy measures and their implementation, is necessary. For this purpose, this study investigates the impact of environmental regulation and financial development on carbon emissions in BRICS countries from 1995 to 2016, employing the most recent data estimation technique common correlated effect means group (CCEMG). The empirical results reveal that financial development contributes to carbon emissions, whereas environmental regulations are also found to degrade the environment by stimulating carbon emissions. Important policy insights are suggested for policymakers to counter environmental challenges.

Abstract:This research aimed to examine the complex interaction between technological innovation, renewable energy consumption, natural resources, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of BRICS (i.e., Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) countries from 1990 to 2019, to accomplish the Paris Climate Conference (COP-21) objective of reducing CO2 emissions to promote environmental sustainability. The long-run empirical estimations derived from the CS-ARDL technique, which considered other estimation issues like cross-sectional dependency and slope heterogeneity, indicated that technological innovation, renewable energy consumption, and natural resources increase environmental sustainability by limiting CO2 emissions, in the short-run and long-run. The technological innovation-related activities have a CO2 mitigating effect as shown by the negative coefficients which ranges between -0.05 and -0.14. This shows that they increase environmental sustainability and aid in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 13. Similarly, renewable energy and natural resources decrease CO2 emissions as shown by the coefficient of renewable energy (-0.31 to -0.81) and natural resources (-0.01 to 0.95); thereby increasing ecological quality by limiting CO2 emissions. Furthermore, the interaction of technological innovation with natural resource rent and renewable energy consumption also aids in mitigating CO2 emissions and increases environmental health. Finally, panel causality analysis revealed a significant causality from all explanatory variables to CO2 emissions. Based on the results, significant policy suggestions are provided, such as improving energy effectiveness, investing in energy technologies, and increasing renewable energy consumption to stimulate technological innovation to achieve the target of a net-zero‑carbon economy.

Abstract:In the digital era, technology innovation and adoption trigger economic growth and enhance CO2 emissions through productivity, which places it in the mainstream policy debate. For BRICS economies, this paper uses the first method proposed in the literature to quantify their information and communication technology (ICT) and innovatively links each country to their information technology adoption rate, as a surrogate indicator for measuring information and communication technology. Environmental Kuznets curve evidence is also examined, using technology innovation, technology adoption, and trade openness as the control variables for sustainable development. The results show that two out of three technology innovation instruments, fixed telephone, and broadband subscriptions increase CO2 emissions. Simultaneously, mobile cellular subscriptions have a lowering effect on CO2 emission in BRICS. The technology adoption indicators, high-technology exports, and electric power consumption also cause an upsurge in CO2 emission. Moreover, trade openness also enriches the level of CO2 emission in the BRICS regions. There is a need to devise technology innovation and adoption policies to better use technology and to ensure a green environment.

Abstract:The pervasive environmental and life-threatening effects of global warming, attributable to be an ensuing impact of surging CO2 emissions have motivated the conveyance of numerous global climate treaties. Among many resolutions, the transition to clean energy has become a fundamental option identified as a pathway to salvage the environment for the current and future generations. Thus, this research inspects the impact of substantial role of renewable energy in BRICS sustainability pathways. The study’s objectives endogenize the functional roles of technological innovation (TEC), nonrenewable energy (NREN), nuclear energy (NUC), service-value added (SERV), and urbanization (URB) from 1992 to 2019. The empirical evidence relies on second-generation methods to ascertain cross-sectional dependency (CSD), slope concerns, stationary test, and bootstrap Westerlund cointegration test, which affirmed the presence of CSD. The MMQR result finds that NREN, URB, and TEC induces carbon emissions. Conversely, REN, NUC, and SERV mitigate carbon emissions. The Dumitrescu-Hurlin causality test reveals unidirectional causality from NREN to CO2 emissions; REN to CO2 emissions; CO2 emissions to NUC, CO2 emissions to SERV, and CO2 emissions to URB. Meanwhile, a two-way causality impact is discovered between CO2 emissions and TEC. Based on empirical findings, policy implications that lead to sustainability of BRICS environment are formulated.

Abstract:The BRICS countries ratified the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals agenda whereby ensuring environmental sustainability is of paramount importance for these emerging market economies. Although the BRICS nations have recorded noteworthy economic growth trajectories over the last couple of decades, these nations have not fared well in terms of improving their environmental indicators, especially due to gradually becoming more fossil fuel dependent over time. Hence, this study aims to explore whether undergoing the renewable energy transition can directly and indirectly establish environmental sustainability in the BRICS countries by containing their annual growth rates of carbon dioxide emissions. Additionally, the emission growth rate–influencing effects of technological innovation, foreign direct investment receipts, urbanization, and institutional quality are also evaluated. Based on data spanning from 1996 to 2021 and considering the result obtained using advanced panel data estimators, the findings endorse that the yearly carbon emission growth rates are (a) unaffected by undergoing the renewable energy transition on its own; (b) positively impacted by technological innovation, net receipts of foreign direct investment, and urbanization; and (c) negatively impacted by improving institutional quality through effective controlling of the spread of corruption. More importantly, the results verify the joint carbon emission growth rate–mitigating impact of renewable energy transition and institutional quality improvement. Hence, for abating the emission growth rate figures, several policies are prescribed.

Abstract:This study examines the ecological impacts of energy transition (fossil fuels, nuclear energy, and renewable energy), environmental technology, structural change, and urbanization in BRICS from 1996 to 2019 while relying on second-generation estimators. The key findings uncover fossil fuels and urbanization as deterrents to BRICS' drive for sustainable environment through their carbon-inducing effects. Besides, nuclear energy, renewable energy, environmental technology, and structural change provide the needed support to enhance the sustainability of the environment by mitigating CO 2 emissions. The empirical regularity of the main estimators is supported by the outcomes of MMQR across the low, middle, and upper quantiles. Besides, the direction of causality among the variables reveals unidirectional, bidirectional, and no causal nexus. On the policy front, the study recommends substantially reducing fossil fuel subsidies while investing in nuclear and renewable energy as viable action plans for enhancing the sustainability of the BRICS' environment.

Abstract:In achieving sustainability, emerging economies are tremendously exploiting available resources, which are leading towards the climate change and environmental degradation. That's why this study incorporated significant factors such as international digital trade, green technological innovation, renewable energy, GDP and GDP square. For this objective a panel dataset of BRICS-T economies sourced from World development Indicator comprises on 1990–2022 is employed. Econometric approaches such as FMOLS and DOLS affirm that international digital trade, green technological innovation, and renewable energy can significantly assisting to mitigate their ecological footprint in BRICS-T. Further, FGLS validates the FMOLS and DOLS findings and affirms the presence of EKC. Therefore, the responsibilities of policymakers have increased to eradicate the negative influence of economic growth while promoting digital trade, amplification of green technology and incentivize the adoption of renewable energy to achieve the environmental sustainability and development.

Abstract:This study examines links between Morgan and Stanley capital Investment (MSCI), foreign direct investment (FDI), renewable energy, urbanization, and trade openness on environmental degradation in (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) BRICS countries. In this study, generalized method of moment (GMM) estimation is applied on a data set ranging from 1993 to 2018. Results illustrate that stock market index price (MSCI) has negative relationship on CO2 emissions in India, China, Russia, and South Africa and has positive relationship in Brazil. One possible reason for this is strong environmental regulations and their enforcement by Brazilian government. The study also finds that trade openness, FDI, and urbanization have a significant positive relationship on environmental degradation. The impact of stock market development on environmental degradation varies among BRICS countries. Our outcomes have significant policy implications. For example, the policy makers have to initiate effective strategies to promote the renewable energy sources to meet the increasing demand for energy by replacing the use of conventional energy such as coal, gas, and oil. This will help to reduce the CO2 emissions from fossil fuel and ensure sustainable stock market development in the BRICS nations. BRICS countries who have taken the initiative and formulated policies for businesses to conserve the environment play a positive role compared to those who do not.

Abstract:AbstractThe relationship between energy, environment, and economic growth has been received a lot of attention recently among scientific studies, but environmental sustainability remains a global issue. Renewable energy development, green technological innovations, and regulatory policy mechanisms can all help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support environmental sustainability. The purpose of this study was to look at the influence of renewable energy development, market regulation, and environment-related innovation on CO2 emissions in the BRICS countries from 1990 to 2020. For empirical analysis, it uses second-generation panel unit root test and updated linear and nonlinear cointegration techniques. To this end, this study employs symmetric and asymmetric approach to linear and nonlinear relationship among study variables. The findings indicate that there is long-run symmetric and asymmetric relationship between renewable energy development, market regulation, environment-related innovation, and CO2 emissions. The market regulation plays significant mediating role in relation between renewable energy development, environment-related innovation, and CO2 emissions. Our findings suggest that BRICS countries need to more focus on the environment-related innovation and renewable energy development. They should design market-based environmental regulation policies, emphasize on environmental taxes, expand renewable energy development, and environment-related innovations. Such strategies are key to limiting CO2 emissions and gain environmental sustainable.

Abstract:This article examines the effect of environmental policy stringency and green innovation on CO 2 emissions in the BRICS nations, using annual data from 1990 to 2019 utilizing panel FMOLS and DOLS estimators and Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MMQR). To this end, we estimate an equation in which CO 2 emissions are explained by GDP, trade openness, nonrenewable and renewable energy consumption, the environmental stringency index, and green innovation, as measured by the number of patent applications for environmentally related inventions. FMOLS and DOLS results reveal that GDP, nonrenewable energy consumption, and trade openness have a positive effect on environmental pollution, whereas improvements in renewable energy consumption and environmental regulations lead to a drop in CO 2 emissions. However, green innovation does not have a significant effect on CO 2 emissions. MMQR estimates demonstrate that the GDP has a positive effect on CO 2 emissions across all quantiles, suggesting that a higher degree of economic growth is associated with higher emissions. Based on findings, empirical evidence suggests that BRICS countries should follow the policies encouraging the reduction of nonrenewable energy consumption in the region without harming the development of the economy. Besides, policymakers should promote renewable energy consumption and enhance investment in green innovation to achieve sustainable development and environmental quality.

Abstract:In recent decades, rapid development in emerging economies has heightened climate challenges, threatening environmental sustainability and quality. In response, green energy, technological innovation, and carbon pricing strategies have emerged as key tools for environmental mitigation and promoting green economic growth. These strategies are integral to the goals of COP 27, the 2030 SDGs, and the pledge to reach carbon neutrality by 2060. However, the BRICS economic bloc faces significant obstacles in balancing socio‐economic growth with environmental sustainability. This study intentions to inspect the impact of natural resource rents, research and development (R&D) expenditures, green energy, green technological innovation, and economic growth on carbon emissions in BRICS economies from 1995 to 2021. Using a cross‐sectional ARDL model, the study explores relationships between these variables, employing advanced panel methods to account for CSD and heterogeneity. The empirical findings reveal that research and development expenditure, green energy, and green technological innovation contribute to CO2 emission reductions by 0.329%, 0.211%, and 0.148%, respectively. In contrast, a 1% increase in economic growth and natural resource rents corresponds to a substantial 0.499% and 0.840% upsurge in CO2 emissions. The Dumitrescu and Hurlin panel causality test also highlights reciprocal causal relationships among the variables. Based on these findings, the study recommends policy actions to achieve SDG targets: enforce stricter CO2 emissions regulations for SDG‐13, increase renewable energy investment for SDG‐07, support green innovation for SDG‐08, enhance R&D for SDG‐09, and promote circular economy practices for SDG‐12.

Energy consumption and innovation-environmental degradation nexus in BRICS countries: new evidence from NARDL approach using carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions

Abstract:The BRICS nations-Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa-have grown significantly in importance over the past few decades, playing a vital role in the development and growth of the global economy. This expansion has not been without cost, either, since these countries' concern over environmental deterioration has risen sharply. Both researchers and decision-makers have focused a lot of attention on the connection between economic growth and ecological sustainability. By using nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) approach, the complex relationships were analyzed between important economic indicators-such as gross domestic product (GDP), ecological innovations (EI), energy consumption (ENC), institutional performance (IP), and trade openness (TOP)-and their effect on carbon emissions and nitrous oxide emissions in the BRICS countries from 1990 to 2021, this study seeks to contribute to this important dialog. Principal component analysis is formed for technological innovations and institutional performance using six (ICT service exports as a percentage of service exports, computer communications as a percentage of commercial service exports, fixed telephone subscriptions per 100 people, internet users as a percentage of the population, number of patent applications, and R&D expenditures as a percentage of GDP) and twelve (government stability, investment profile, socioeconomic conditions, internal conflict, external conflict, military in politics, control of corruption, religious tensions, ethnic tensions, law and order, bureaucracy quality, and democratic accountability) distinct indicators, respectively. The results of nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag estimation show that increase in economic growth would increase carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions. The positive and negative shocks in trade openness have positive and significant impact on carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions in BRICS countries. Furthermore, the positive shock energy consumptions have positive and significant effect on Brazil and India when carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions are used. However, EKC exists in BRICS countries when carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions are used. According to long-term estimation, energy consumption and technological innovations in the BRICS countries show a strong and adverse link with nitrous oxide and a favorable relationship with carbon dioxide emissions. In the long run, environmental indicators are seen to have a major and unfavorable impact in BRICS nations. Finally, it is proposed that BRICS nations can assure environmental sustainability if they support creative activities, enhance their institutions, and support free trade policies.

Abstract:Unquestionably, energy transition, which entails increasing renewables in the energy mix, is among the most reliable strategies to discontinue the utilization of fossil fuels and achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In this context, technological advancement can not only stimulate green energy supply but also promote resource efficiency for realizing ecological goals. Also, persistent long-term energy policies and uninterrupted investments are needed to progress on SDGs for climate control and sustainable development. Hence, factors such as economic and government stability are pertinent to implementing and governing energy strategies. Against this background, this study assesses the potential of energy transition in meeting ecological goals by taking into account the roles of economic stability, technology, and government stability in BRICS from 1992 to 2018. Using the second-generation Westerlund cointegration test, the study found a long-run association among variables. The findings from the Continuously Updated Fully Modified (CuP-FM) test disclosed that energy transition is effective in limiting the ecological footprint (EF) in BRICS. Alongside this, economic stability and technology reduce ecological degradation. In addition, government stability stimulates environmental sustainability, while population density decreases environmental sustainability. Finally, the implications of these conclusions for meeting SDGs are discussed and policy directions are provided.
