Abstract:A modulation format identification (MFI) scheme based on multi-dimensional amplitude features is proposed for elastic optical networks. According to the multi-dimensional amplitude features, incoming polarization division multiplexed (PDM) signals can be identified as QPSK, 8QAM, 16QAM, 32QAM, 64QAM and 128QAM signals using the k-nearest neighbors (KNNs) algorithm in the digital coherent receivers. The proposed scheme does not require any prior training or optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) information. The performance of the proposed MFI scheme is verified based on numerical simulations with 28GBaud PDM-QPSK/-8QAM/-16QAM/-32QAM/-64QAM/-128QAM signals. The results show that the proposed scheme can achieve 100% of the correct MFI rate for all six modulation formats when the OSNR values are greater than their thresholds corresponding to the 20% forward error correction (FEC) related to a BER of 2.4 × 10−2. Meanwhile, the effects of residual chromatic dispersion, polarization mode dispersion and fiber nonlinearities on the proposed scheme are also explored. Finally, the computational complexity of the proposed scheme is analyzed, which is compared with relevant MFI schemes. The work indicates that the proposed technique could be regarded as a good candidate for identifying modulation formats up to 128QAM.

Abstract:A software system developed by AT&T to do an optimal routing of its international circuits over the worldwide cable and satellite network is described. The planning environment is discussed, and the overall architecture is described. The formulation of the models and their capabilities are summarized. Results generated by this system are used in the planning of international circuit loadings and construction of international facilities. The system does optimal routing of circuits for international message telecommunications service between United States and foreign switches; it also routes custom-services circuits between customer premises. The system takes into account the satellite-loading agreement between COMSAT and AT&T.<<ETX>>

Abstract:A modulation format identification (MFI) method is proposed for high-speed optical fiber communication systems employing probabilistic shaping (PS) signals in polarization division multiplexing (PDM). The approach utilizes a multi-feature input hybrid neural network (MFHNN) incorporating constellation diagram features and histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) features as dual inputs. These features are trained using a multi-scale convolutional neural network (MS-CNN) and a deep neural network (DNN) to obtain corresponding feature vectors. In the fusion layer, the two feature vectors are merged and classified through fully connected layers, thus constructing an efficient MFI model. The method enhances MFI accuracy by leveraging features of different modulation formats and representations at different neural network levels. To validate the feasibility of the proposed method, signals are collected through the construction of a simulated PDM optical fiber communication system with a fiber length of 80 km and a symbol rate of 50 GBaud. The gathered data is then utilized with the proposed MFI to identify six PS-QAM signals (PS-16QAM with 3 b/symbol and 3.5 b/symbol, PS-64QAM with 4 b/symbol, 4.5 b/symbol, 5 b/symbol, and 5.5 b/symbol) and two uniform shaping (US) QAM signals (US-16QAM with 4 b/symbol and US-64QAM with 6 b/symbol). Simulation results demonstrate that the MFI model constructed by the proposed method achieves an overall identification accuracy of 91.6% for the eight modulation formats when the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) is within the range of 10 to 30 dB. Compared to traditional MFI methods, our approach significantly improves both MFI accuracy and convergence speed.

Abstract:Adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems are promising for high-bit-rate short-reach communication by optimizing the allocation of modulation format and power to each subcarrier. Because adaptive OFDM systems involve multiple modulation formats, automatic modulation format identification (AMFI) is significant for subsequent signal processing and symbol decision of OFDM receivers. In this work, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a blind modulation format identification technique based on constellation diagrams achieved from channel estimation of OFDM system. In the proposed AMFI scheme, the identification feature is the number of signals’ constellation clusters. First, we use the peak-density clustering algorithm to track the centers of signals’ constellation clusters by plotting the density–distance graph, where the clusters’ centers have much larger density and distance values than that of the other clusters’ points. Then, we use the K nearest neighbor regression algorithm to automatically calculate the number of signals’ constellation clusters. Finally, we evaluated and measured the identification accuracies of QPSK, 8-QAM, 8-PSK, 16-QAM, 64-QAM and 128 QAM signals in simulation and experiment.
Multi-Task Convolutional Neural Network Based Signal Recognition in Radio-over-Fiber Systems

Abstract:The increase in the diversity of broadband signals in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems leads to enhanced flexibility and reliability of communication service provisioning. In this paper, a multi-task convolutional neural network (MT-CNN) is proposed for modulation format identification (MFI) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) monitoring of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals with different modulation orders and SNRs, in an 18GHz carrier RoF system. Raw in-phase and quadrature (IQ) components and transfer learning are used to simplify the training process. The identification accuracy of over 99% for modulation formats ranging from QPSK to 256QAM, and the SNR monitoring with root mean square error (RMSE) below 1.5dB are obtained both in numerical study and experimental demonstration.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate optical envelope detection of 40 Mbaud 16‐QAM and QPSK RF modulated signals. The proposed system employs an electro‐absorption modulator performing the function of an optical halfwave rectifier. In this experiment, the QAM and QPSK signals are frequency down converted from a 1.6 GHz carrier frequency to an IF at 500 MHz, requiring no high frequency local oscillator and mixer at the remote base station. This result proves the feasibility of optical envelope detection for complex modulation formats of RF signals for hybrid wireless‐fiber transmission links. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:In this paper, we skillfully utilize the discriminative ability of the discriminator to construct a conditional generative adversarial network, and propose a scheme that uses few symbols to achieve high accuracy recognition of modulation formats under low signal-to-noise ratio conditions in coherent optical communication. In the one thousand kilometres G.654E optical fiber transmission system, transmission experiments are conducted on the PDM-QPSK/-8PSK/-16QAM/-32QAM/-64QAM modulation format at 8G/16G/32G baud rates, and the signal-to-noise ratio parameters are traversed under experimental conditions. As a key technology in the next-generation elastic optical networks, the modulation format recognition scheme proposed in this paper achieves 100% recognition of the above five modulation formats without distinguishing signal transmission rates. The optical signal-to-noise ratio thresholds required to achieve 100% recognition accuracy are 12.4 dB, 14.3 dB, 15.4 dB, 16.2 dB, and 17.3 dB, respectively.

Abstract:Automatic Modulation Format Identification(AMFI) is an important issue in Visible Light Communication (VLC). There are several factors that affect the performance of vehicular VLC (V-VLC) systems. To accomplish the required communication quality for different traffic scenarios, It needs adaptive modulation techniques. Adaptive modulation requires modulation format identification at the receiver to avoid the overhead required to determine the proper modulation format. In this paper, we propose an AMFI scheme based on Deep Learning (DL) for Infrastructure-to-Vehicle (I2V) VLC. Our scheme utilizes the Hough transform to project the constellation diagram of the received modulated signals onto another space to extract features efficiently. Hough transform is estimated for eight different VLC modulation formats, including Q/8/16-Phase Shift Keying (PSK) and 4/16/32/64-Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) at signal to noise ratio (SNR) ranging from 5 to 25 dB. Conventional classifiers such as Alexnet, Sequeeznet and Googlenet are used to perform the task of AMFI. A study of the impact of the weather conditions and the communication distance on the accuracy of the used classifiers is introduced. The obtained results prove that the proposed scheme can identify the modulation format with high classification accuracy up to 100% at lower SNR levels and different weather conditions.

Abstract:Higher-order modulation schemes in optical communication systems that suffer from several impairments can use artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, among other possible techniques, to mitigate these issues. In this paper, several techniques for optical communication systems have been proposed to enhance the performance of dual-polarization (DP) M-ary Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (M-QAM) as DP-16-QAM, DP-64-QAM, DP-128-QAM, and DP-256-QAM with 240Gbps data rate. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) with seven different training algorithms have been applied to optimize the optical communication system. A high optimization of modulation format identification (MFI) with accuracy up to 100% was obtained at about 13 dB OSNR and at 22 dB OSNR for the DP-265-QAM format.

Abstract:A novel algorithm is proposed to identify automatically the modulation types of the communication signals using wavelet transform and pattern recognition.Unlike other modulation classification algorithms,this one can identify analog and digital modulations at the same time.Wavelet transform is used to estimate the symbol rate of the received signals in order to discriminate between analog and digital modulation types.Then the feature parameters are extracted to identify the specific modulation type.Computer simulation results demonstrate that the performance of the algorithm is efficient when the SNR≥15dB.

Abstract:AbstractIn this research, a classifier is proposed for automatic modulation classification of some common modulation schemes, i.e., BPSK, QPSK, 8-PSK and 16-QAM. Our proposed classifier considers multipath fading effects on the received signal in a non-Gaussian noise environment. Automatic modulation classification is very challenging in real-world scenarios due to fading effects and additive Gaussian mixture noise on modulation schemes. Most of the available modulation classifiers do not consider the fading effects which results in degradation of classification in a blind channel environment. In our work, the channel is supposed to be suffering from excessive additive Gaussian mixture noise and frequency selective fading resulting in low signal SNR. The estimation of the unknown channel along with noise parameters is performed using ECM algorithm and then used in maximum-likelihood classifier for the classification of modulation schemes. Simulation results are presented that show 2 dB improvement in performance than classifier which considers only Gaussian noise in the received signal.

Abstract:In this paper we develop a novel algorithm using wavelet transform and pattern recognition to identify the modulation types of the communication signals automatically. Wavelet transform is used to estimate the symbol rate of the received signals in order to discriminate analogue signals from digital ones. Then the key features are extracted to identify the specific modulation type by threshold method. Computer simulation results demonstrate that the performance of the algorithm is efficient at the SNR >= 15 dB.

Abstract:Determining the type of modulation is an important task in military communications, satellite communications systems, and submarine communications. In this study, a new digital modulation classification model is presented for detecting various types of modulated signals. The continuous wavelet transform is used in the first step to create a visual representation of the spectral density of the frequencies of the modulation signals in a scalogram image. The subsequent stage involves the utilization of a deep convolutional neural network for feature extraction from the scalogram images. In the next step, the best features are chosen using the MRMR algorithm. MRMR algorithm increases the classification speed and the ability of interpret the classification model by reducing the dimensions of the features. In the fourth step, the modulations are classified using the group learning technique. In the simulations, modulated signals with different amounts of noise with SNR from 0 to 25 dB are considered. Then, accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The results of the simulations prove that the proposed model with achieving above 99.9% accuracy performs well in the presence of different amounts of noise and provides better performance than other previous studies.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the use of deep neural networks (DNNs) in combination with signals' amplitude histograms (AHs) for simultaneous optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) monitoring and modulation format identification (MFI) in digital coherent receivers. The proposed technique automatically extracts OSNR and modulation format dependent features of AHs, obtained after constant modulus algorithm (CMA) equalization, and exploits them for the joint estimation of these parameters. Experimental results for 112 Gbps polarization-multiplexed (PM) quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK), 112 Gbps PM 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM), and 240 Gbps PM 64-QAM signals demonstrate OSNR monitoring with mean estimation errors of 1.2 dB, 0.4 dB, and 1 dB, respectively. Similarly, the results for MFI show 100% identification accuracy for all three modulation formats. The proposed technique applies deep machine learning algorithms inside standard digital coherent receiver and does not require any additional hardware. Therefore, it is attractive for cost-effective multi-parameter estimation in next-generation elastic optical networks (EONs).

Abstract:The integration of communication and sensing (ICAS) in optical networks is an inevitable trend in building intelligent, multi-scenario, application-converged communication systems. However, due to the impact of nonlinear effects, co-fiber transmission of sensing signals and communication signals can cause interference to the communication signals, leading to an increased bit error rate (BER). This paper proposes a noncoherent solution based on the alternate polarization chirped return-to-zero frequency shift keying (Apol-CRZ-FSK) modulation format to realize a 4 × 100 Gbps dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical network. Simulation results show that compared to traditional modulation formats, such as chirped return-to-zero frequency shift keying (CRZ-FSK) and differential quadrature phase shift keying (DQPSK), this solution demonstrates superior resistance to nonlinear effects, enabling longer transmission distances and better transmission performance. Moreover, to meet the transmission requirements and signal sensing and recognition needs in future optical networks, this study employs the Inception-ResNet-v2 convolutional neural network model to identify three modulation formats. Compared with six deep learning methods including AlexNet, ResNet50, GoogleNet, SqueezeNet, Inception-v4, and Xception, it achieves the highest performance. This research provides a low-cost, low-complexity, and high-performance solution for signal transmission and signal recognition in high-speed optical networks designed for integrated communication and sensing.

Abstract:In the next generation of Elastic Optical Networks, various modulation formats exhibit varying degrees of sensitivity to channel impairments during transmission. To adopt appropriate channel equalization schemes at the receiver, it is essential to perform modulation format identification prior to the receiver, followed by the adjustment of receiver parameters and types based on the recognition results. A system based on a 52-node integrated photonic reservoir chip and untrained K-nearest neighbors (KNN) algorithm is proposed for the recognition of OOK, PAM4, QPSK, and BPSK modulation formats in optical channel transmission. Its performance is validated across optical signal-to-noise ratios ranging from 8 to 23 dB, taking into account the dispersion damage of 20 km single-mode fiber transmission. In all tested scenarios, the recognition accuracy consistently surpasses 96.25%, showcasing a 14.93% improvement over prior works and an 82.81% enhancement over traditional algorithmic methods under identical conditions. The study explores the impact of different waveguide delay amounts, random phases, and algorithm K values on recognition accuracy.

Abstract:With the development of modern communication technology, the new generation of communication network should have the characteristics of faster speed, higher bandwidth utilization, and wider coverage of users and business needs. At the same time, the intelligent optical network is also facing the challenges from the rapid growth of bandwidth demand and the rapid increase of different users services. Therefore, it is necessary to mix different modulation formats in the communication network to meet these requirements. Modulation format recognition (MFR) technology is therefore widely used at the receiving end to improve the performance of subsequent digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms. Compared with traditional machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL) has achieved amazing achievements in classification tasks in recent years. Therefore, we propose a coordinate merging algorithm (CMA) to process the data for DL. Compared with the traditional method of directly processing the in-phase and quadrature (IQ) components of the received signal, and another method we tried to fuse the weights of classification results of signals with different coordinates, the CMA method achieved higher accuracy and better performance against low signal-to-noise (SNR) ratios in visible light communication (VLC) system.

Abstract:A lightweight convolutional (deep) neural networks (CNNs) based modulation format identification (MFI) scheme in 2D Stokes planes for polarization domain multiplexing (PDM) fiber communication system is proposed and demonstrated. Influences of the learning rate of CNN is discussed. Experimental verifications are performed for the PDM system at a symbol rate of 28GBaud. Six modulation formats are identified with a trained CNN from images of received signals. They are PDM-BPSK, PDM-QPSK, PDM-8PSK, PDM-16QAM, PDM-32QAM, and PDM-64QAM. By taking advantage of computer vision, the results show that the proposed scheme can significantly improve the identification performance over the existing techniques.
