Abstract:Background: Medical students are expected to excel in their academics. Hence exposing them to a certain amount of strain may sometimes cause sleep disruptions. The purpose of this study was to determine the sleep quality among Saudi Applied Medical Sciences students and its potential connections with their academic performance and mental health. Methods: This online cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted at Jazan University's College of Applied Medical Sciences in Saudi Arabia. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), a known indicator of sleep quality, a validated mental health measure; Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21), and Academic Performance Scale (APS) with 89 internal consistencies were included in the questionnaire. The cumulative grade point average (GPA) was also used as a covariate to evaluate students' academic success. Results: 112 people responded (response rate = 93%), and 105 of them presented comprehensive information about their backgrounds, way of life, academic standing, sleep patterns, and mental health. Participants' average GPA and APS scores were 4.23 ± 0.52 and 33.16 ± 5.63, respectively. The mean global PSQI score was 6.47 with 2.34 of standard deviation (SD). The majority of individuals (60%) had poor sleep quality particularly due to abnormal sleep latency and lesser sleep duration, as determined by their PSQI score. The prevalence rates for depression, anxiety, and stress were higher; 53%, 54% and 40%, respectively. Both depression and anxiety were substantially correlated with poor sleep quality (p-value = 0.008, p-value = 0.01, respectively). Sleep quality had no significant effect on GPA while global PSQI and depression were significantly negatively correlated with an APS score of participants (p-value = 0.007 and 0.015, respectively). Conclusions: Higher rates of poor sleep quality and psychologically negative emotions were prevalent. Unhealthy sleep patterns were linked to increased levels of anxiety and depression. Self-perceived academic performance was negatively impacted by inadequate sleep and negative emotions, despite the fact that the GPA results were unaffected.

Abstract:Background . Insomnia is a problem that is common in all societies and age groups. However, its importance is increasing between students especially with the highly competitive and demanding environment surrounding them even after their graduation. In spite of the deep understanding of its health and social consequences, the frequency of insomnia among medical students in Jordan was not determined. Aim . To determine the prevalence of sleep disturbances among college students and to look for any association between sleep disturbances and students’ academic achievement. Methods . This is a cross-sectional self-administered questionnaire-based study. The participants were college students of the medical and paramedical specialties. Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) was used and the academic performance was assessed using students’ Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Results . There were 977 responses. Prevalence of clinical insomnia was 26.0%. Students who self-reported good sleep quality had significantly lower ISI scores compared with those who self-reported bad quality of sleep. Students who slept >7 hours had significantly less ISI scores than students who slept <6 hours. Students who had a CGPA more than or equal to 3 had significantly lower ISI scores compared with those who had a CGPA less than 2.5. Self-reported sleep quality was associated with the CGPA. Conclusion . A high prevalence of insomnia was found in this group of students. Academic performance was significantly associated with ISI scores and self-reported sleep quality. These results might be useful for future research into the development of interventional strategies to help students get enough sleep quality and quantity.

Abstract:Introduction: It has long been understood that sleep is a necessary therapeutic element of human physiology and is crucial for healthy functioning, mental health, and quality of life. Medical students frequently minimize their sleep and habits to cope with their workload and their stressful lives, which has a negative influence on both mental health and academic performance. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of stress and its effect on sleep quality among medical students (in both the preclinical and clinical years) at Jazan University in Saudi Arabia. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional research design was applied in this study. The sample constituted medical students at Jazan University, Jazan region, Saudi Arabia. A self-administered online survey was distributed actively to measure the variables of interest. Results: This study examined the sleep quality and psychological distress among 347 students. The findings revealed that a significant proportion of students experienced sleep difficulties, with 52.8% reporting mild sleep problems and 46.6% reporting moderate sleep difficulties. In addition, a notable percentage of participants (28.2%) reported very high psychological distress, while 27.4% experienced severe psychological distress. Conclusions: This study found that medical students had a high level of stress and poor sleep quality, which led to unhealthy habits, such as consuming many energy drinks. Hence, it is recommended that concerns should be addressed to minimize the risk of developing chronic illnesses.

Abstract:Insufficient sleep has become a serious public health concern, particularly prevalent among students. [ 1 , 2 ] To many, sleep may appear as unproductive dormancy, time that could be more profitably allocated to other pursuits. As a result, individuals often sacrifice sleep to meet work, educational, or societal obligations. [ 3 , 4 ] However, research has shown that unhealthy sleep patterns not only impact individuals physically and emotionally but also have adverse effects on cognitive well-being. Circadian rhythm disturbances lead to alterations in hormones and inflammatory markers, potentially compromising attention and decision-making in sleep-deprived individuals. [ 1 ] Beyond its physical and mental health implications, sleep deficiency can disrupt the academic performance of college students. [ 5 ] Furthermore, numerous professions, including military personnel, shift workers, and medical residents, frequently endure inadequate sleep. Scientific research on the consequences of sleep deprivation is essential for enhancing the health and performance of individuals who must excel in conditions of minimal sleep. [ 3 ]

Abstract:BACKGROUND Most of the Medical Rehabilitation and Applied medical students got disturbed sleep due to academic activities and clinical demands. In our study the relationship between the psychological stress and sleep quality could be useful to organize the mental health program in medical rehabilitation and applied medical colleges. OBJECTIVE The main goal is to evaluate and compare the sleep quality in medical students in various phases of their medical course in order to prevent the effect of stress during their study period. METHODS The effect of stress on sleep quality a cross sectional questionnaire-based study on 300 Medical Rehabilitation and applied medical students, were invited to participate from Taibah University. Among which 271 completed the forms fully irrespective of year of study. The instruments were self-report Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ12) and Depression and anxiety scale were used in data collection. The results obtained from the instrument components were analyzed for the total sample including the male and female students. RESULTS 271 completed the forms and the results shown about the current study was 52.05% of the students have sleep quality fairly bad. In further, there was relationship between sleep quality, general health status of students and depression - anxiety status i.e., significant difference in coefficient correlation r = 0.532, p = 0.0001(p<=0.05). CONCLUSIONS In our study we concluded that most of the Medical Rehabilitation and Applied medical students seem to be more exposed to poor quality of sleep disturbance. Which act as a barrier in examination performance Active interventions should be implemented to improve sleep hygiene, reduce depression and anxiety in medical Rehabilitation and applied medical students.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Sleep quality has an important role in brain functioning and development. Affected sleep quality and mental health can negatively affect the academic performance of college students.OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of sleep quality and mental health on the academic performance of medical students at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study among medical students at King Abdulaziz University. The dependent variable was the current grade point average (GPA). For the independent variables, two validated tools were used in the study: the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) for sleep assessment; and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) for mental health assessment.RESULTS: A total of 382 responses were analyzed. The majority of students (86.6%) had GPAs greater than 3.75/5, while only 1% of the sample had a GPA lower than 2.75/5. The PSQI showed a median and interquartile range of (9, 6-11). Normal DASS-21 represented the majority as follows: depression at 67%, anxiety at 63.1%, and stress at 82.2%. In the statistical analyses, sleep quality, depression, anxiety, and stress were not statistically significant with the student's GPA.CONCLUSION: Low levels of sleep quality were found among medical students in our study. While sleep quality and mental health status did not show an effect on the GPA of the medical students, lower sleep quality was significantly correlated with increased scores of depression, anxiety, and stress. Our findings mandate interventions directed at improving sleep quality among medical students.

Abstract:Background:Morphine is widely used in patients undergoing surgical operations and is also reported to mediate cardioprotection of preconditioning. The current study determined effects of morphine at therapeutic to pharmacologic concentrations on cardiac action potential, L-type Ca2+ current (ICa.L), delayed rectifier K+ current (IK), and inward rectifier K+ current (IK1) in isolated rabbit ventricular myocytes. Methods:Ventricular myocytes were enzymatically isolated from rabbit hearts. Action potential and membrane currents were recorded in current and voltage clamp modes. Results:Morphine at concentrations from 0.01 to 1 μm significantly prolonged cardiac action potential, and at 0.1 and 1 μm slightly but significantly hyperpolarized the resting membrane potential. In addition, morphine at 0.1 μm significantly augmented ICa.L (at +10 mV) from 5.9 ± 1.9 to 7.3 ± 1.7 pA/pF (by 23%; P < 0.05 vs. control) and increased IK1 (at −60 mV) from 2.8 ± 1.0 to 3.5 ± 0.9 pA/pF (by 27%; P < 0.05 vs. control). Five μm naltrindole (a selective δ-opioid receptor antagonist) or 5 μm norbinaltorphimine (a selective &kgr;-opioid receptor antagonist) prevented the increase in ICa.L induced by morphine, but 5 μm CTOP (a selective μ-opioid receptor antagonist) did not. The three types of opioid antagonists did not affect the augmentation of IK1 by morphine. Morphine had no effect on IK. Conclusions:These results indicate that morphine prolongs action potential duration by increasing ICa.L, an effect mediated by δ- and &kgr;-opioid receptors. It also hyperpolarizes cardiac resting membrane potential by increasing IK1, which is not mediated by opioid receptors.

Abstract:International Journal of Social Psychiatry, Ahead of Print. Background:There is a relation between sleep quality, mental health, and academic performance among medical students. Students who experience better sleep quality and have good mental health will exhibit higher academic performance compared to those who have reduced sleep quality and poor psychological health.Objective:To assess the relation between mental health problems, sleep quality, and academic performance among medical students in the stage of clinical training at the University of Fallujah, Iraq.Methods:In this cross-sectional study, a self-administered questionnaire was adopted that gathered three validated and previously used screening tools: The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21), and the AHELO Self-Assessment Questionnaire.Results:The findings revealed a high prevalence of anxiety, 40% of the students reported experiencing mild to moderate anxiety, while 24.1% showed severe anxiety, 20.0% experienced mild depression, and 10.8% had moderate depression. There was a significant negative correlation between stress and academic performance (Pearson's r = −.333, p < .001), between depression and academic performance (Pearson's r = −.437, p < .001), and between anxiety and academic performance (Pearson's r = −.417, p < .001).Conclusion:Mental health problems are prevalent among medical students represented by the study sample, and are significantly correlated to the students' academic performance.

Abstract:Sleep disturbances like poor and insufficient sleep are common among medical students in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries; however, the extent of medically defined sleep disorders (SDs) remains unclear. This meta-analysis determines SD prevalence and identifies associated factors among medical students in the MENA. PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and reference lists of included studies were searched (latest search: June 2022). Meta-analyses included 22 studies and were performed using random-effect models. Included studies used self-reported screening tools for assessing SDs and then estimated the proportion of participants at high risk of developing a SD. Central disorders of hypersomnolence were the most prevalent SD [prevalence pooled range: 30.9% (Jordan) to 62.5% (Saudi Arabia)], followed by insomnia disorders [prevalence pooled range: 30.4% (Jordan) to 59.1% (Morocco)], circadian rhythm sleep–wake disorders [prevalence pooled range: 13.5% (Jordan) to 22.4% (Saudi Arabia)], sleep-related breathing disorders [prevalence pooled range: 12.2% (Jordan) to 22.5% (Pakistan)], sleep-related movement disorders [prevalence pooled range: 5.9% (Egypt) to 30.6% (Saudi Arabia)], and parasomnias [prevalence pooled range: 5.6% (Jordan) to 17.4% (Saudi Arabia)]. Female sex, studying in the latter academic years, having anxiety, excessive internet use, and poor academic performance were significantly associated with SDs. SDs are prevalent among MENA medical students. Implementing student-centered interventions targeting high risk groups in medical schools should be considered to improve students' health and wellbeing.

Abstract:Introduction: Sleep, an essential therapeutic part of human physiology, Sleep problems was widespread among students in medical colleges, and excessive stress and the pressure of holding grades can affect their sleep quality. The relationship between sleep, stress and cognition/learning is far more complex than perceived. Material and Method: Cross sectional study was conducted in Al-Kindy College of Medicine, during the period from (2022 to 2023) academic year. The electronic questionnaire was distributed among all students. Analysis of data was carried out using IBM SPSS version 24. Results: A total of (500) medical students' online surveys were analyzed from AL-Kindy College of Medicine, The highest number of participants was from the fifth year with (114) students, and percentage of (22.8%), whereas the lowest number of participants was from the second year with (68) students (13.6%). There were about (258) male with percentage of (51.6%), and (242) female with percentage of (48.4) participated in this study. The majority of students (160) with percentage of (32%) were sleeping (6) hours/day, and a minority (1) student with percentage of (0.2%) had 3 hours sleeping/day. There was a significant relationship between sleep hours and sleep deprivation like, about (297) students, with prevalence of (59.4%) agreed that sleeplessness negatively affected their academic performance, while (41) students with percentage of (8.2%) disagreed. According to the effect of stress, the prevalence of sleep disorders among undergraduate medical students was shown that (169) students with percentage of (33.8%), were always stressed, while (34) students with percentage of (6.8 %), were rarely affected by stress. According to the causes of stress, the majority of students (198), with percentage of (39.6%), were had too much study, while (1) student, with percentage of (0.2%), was had no significant reason. Other (174) students, with percentage of (34.8%), were under stress because of exams and (127) students, with percentage of (25.4%), were under stress because of life events. Conclusions: Sleep disorders are common among medical students. The study also reveals that there is a strong, positive and significant relationship between stress levels sources of stress and sleep deprivation which is associated with poor academic performance. Recommendations: Keeping bedtime and wake time consistent, including on weekends. Regular activity helps promote a good night's sleep. Also schedule exercise at least a few hours before bedtime and avoid stimulating activities before bedtime. Further research is required in this field.
Factors associated with poor sleep quality among dental students in Malaysia

Abstract:Background: Good sleep quality is crucial for dental students as they must have optimal cognitive function, memory, and decision-making to accomplish their learning requirements. This study aims to determine sleep quality, its associated factors, and the association between sleep quality and academic performance among dental students in Malaysia. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved dental students at four public universities in Malaysia. A validated Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire was used to assess their sleep quality. An additional self-administered questionnaire was employed to obtain the students' sociodemographic profile, lifestyle, and academic performance. The data were analysed using descriptive, chi-square, and multiple logistic regression. Results: Three hundred eighty-four dental students participated in this study. About half of the dental students (51.6%) have poor sleep quality. The mean of sleep hours per night was 5.72 (SD 1.06). The sleep quality was significantly poor among Malay students (P = 0.023), students who stayed at hostel (P = 0.002), and those who consumed caffeinated drinks (P = 0.028). Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that the poor sleep quality was significantly associated with self-perceived poor academic performance (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) 2.95, 95% CI [1.25-6.96], P-value = 0.013) and students skipping class (AOR 1.70, 95% CI [1.00-2.91], P-value = 0.046). Conclusions: Most of the dental students in Malaysia have poor sleep quality. Ethnicity, accommodation, and caffeine consumption were significantly associated with sleep quality. Awareness to sleep quality among dental students is needed to ensure they are able to cope with the challenging dental school learning environment.
Factors Affecting Sleep Quality among University Medical and Nursing Students: A Study in Two Countries in the Mediterranean Region

Abstract:Poor sleep quality, a global public health concern, poses a significant burden on individuals, particularly health care university students facing intense academic stress. A three-center cross-sectional study was conducted at the Higher Institute of Nursing and Health Sciences in Tetouan (Morocco), Faculty of Medicine in Tangier (Morocco) and Faculty of Nursing in Valencia (Spain). We collected various data using a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Pittsburgh sleep quality questionnaire, the international physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ) and the smartphone addiction questionnaire short-version (SAS-SV). A total of 1210 students were included in our study (mean age 20.4 years, 67.2% female, nursing students (66.2%) and medical students (33.8%), 76.1% students from Morocco and 33.9% from Spain). Analysis revealed a higher prevalence of poor sleep quality among Moroccans students compared to Spanish ones (p < 0.001), that nursing students showed less favorable sleep quality than medical students (p < 0.011) and that living with a chronic disease was linked to less favorable sleep quality (p < 0.001). Lastly, intense or weak physical activity and smartphone addiction were correlated with poor sleep quality (p < 0.001). In the multivariate analysis, an association persisted between poor sleep quality and factors such as the country of study (Odds ratio (OR): 6.25 [95% Confidence Interval (CI): 4.34–9.09]), involvement in nursing studies (OR: 3.50 [95% CI: 2.36–5.27]), and the presence of chronic diseases (OR: 2.70 [95% CI: 1.72–4.16]), (p < 0.01 each). Our findings highlight the multifaceted factors affecting sleep quality in young university students. The implications underscore the imperative of interventions tailored to this demographic group.

Abstract:Introduction Academic pressure and its associated stress are responsible for disturbances in the circadian cycle of the students. Adequate sleep has crucial role in enhancing cognitive skills especially memory retention. Poor night time sleep quality and consequent daytime sleepiness affects physical and cognitive health of the students. In this study, sleep quality among medical students is evaluated. Methods It was an observational, cross-sectional study conducted with undergraduate medical students. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess the sleep quality. The data was analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 22.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Results Of 281 students, 155 (55.16%) were pre-clinical students and 126 (44.83%) were clinical students; 207 (73.66%) were female students and 74 (26.33%) were male. The overall frequency of poor sleepers was 172 (61.2%); 95 (55.2%) of these were clinical sciences and 77 (44.8%) were basic sciences students. Sleep latency, duration, and efficiency were more impaired in clinical students (p-value ≤ 0.05). Use of sleep medications and daytime dysfunction was more common in clinical students (p-value ≤ 0.05). Conclusion Medical students are continuously under high academic stress and pressure. Adequate sleep is essential for them to refresh them every day and help in learning and memory processing. Medical students in advance years of education have worse sleep quality than those in early years. Efforts should be taken to improve their sleep quality in order to protect the psychological and emotional health of future doctors.

Objective: To determine the effects of sleep quality on medical and dental students' cardiovascular system, academic performance, and anxiety at Peshawar Medical and Dental College. Methodology: The Riphah International University and Prime Foundation Pakistan Institutional Review Board approved a cross-sectional research for their respective institutions. Interrogation of randomly chosen individuals was conducted using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), as well as physiological data. The data were entered and analyzed using SPSS-25. Result: In our research, out of 600 individuals, 286 (46.7%) had excellent sleep quality (PSQI score less than 5) and 314 (52.3%) had poor sleep quality (PSQI score larger than 5). (PSQI score greater than 5). Among medical students, there was a statistically significant link between sleep quality and physiologic parameters, academic performance, and anxiety score; heart rate (p0.05), systolic blood pressure (p0.05), diastolic blood pressure (p0.01), and academic performance (p0.05) were all linked. Conclusion: Academic performance, heart rate, and blood pressure were shown to be significantly correlated with sleep quality in dentistry and medical students; however sleep quality was not found to be significantly correlated with anxiety scores. Murine encephalitozoonosis: the effect of age and mode of transmission on occurrence of infection.

Abstract:Experiments were conducted to determine whether neonatal mice are more susceptible to E. cuniculi than adult mice, and whether vertical and/or horizontal transmission occur in murine encephalitozoonosis. E. cuniculi infection in neonates did not cause mortality or clinical signs, but did result in chronic infection. Despite initial age-related immunodeficiency, mice infected as neonates eventually developed humoral and cell-mediated immune responses against the parasite comparable to those seen in adult mice. The results suggested that neonatal mice are not more susceptible to E. cuniculi than adult mice. Pups from either infected or normal parents did not differ in humoral and cell-mediated immune responses after challenge, suggesting that pups from infected parents were not infected with E. cuniculi during gestation. In contrast, mice became infected by caging with infected mice demonstrating that horizontal infection does occur.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Little is recognized about factors affecting poor sleep hygiene and relations of sleep problems with the quality of life among adults.AIMS: To evaluate sleep hygiene, explore its associated factors, assess the prevalence of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and insomnia, and their relations with sleep hygiene. Besides, correlate sleep problems with life quality.METHODS: A representative sample of primary healthcare population was surveyed using questionnaires comprising sociodemographic characters, personal lifestyles, validated Arabic versions of Epworth sleepiness scales, Athens insomnia scale, short-form health survey questionnaire (SF-12), and developed Arabic sleep hygiene index (SHI).RESULTS: A total of 401 adults participated in the study. The average SHI score was 17.25 ± 7.33. Poorer sleep hygiene was significantly detected in younger age, unmarried, unemployed, smokers, and energy drinks consumers (<i>P</i> < 0.05). Positive significant correlations were correlated with cellphone and video-gaming duration. About 56.61% and 39.90% of participants suffered insomnia symptoms and EDS, respectively. Significant poorer SHI was detected among insomnia and EDS sufferers. Negative significant correlations were observed between scores of both components of SF-12 and EDS, insomnia, and SHI.CONCLUSION: Significant negative associations were detected between SHI, EDS, insomnia, and both components of life quality. The role of sleep hygiene education programs in the promotion of sleep and quality of life need to be considered.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Adequate sleep has a crucial role in enhancing cognitive skills especially memory retention. Poor night time sleep quality and the consequent daytime sleepiness affect physical and cognitive health of students and their academic performance. The aim of this study is to find whether or not poor academic performance is a consequence of poor sleep quality among Pakistani medical students.METHODS: It was an observational, cross-sectional study conducted with undergraduate medical students. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess the sleep quality. Academic performance was assessed by mean grade point average (GPA) of the students. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 22.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA).RESULTS: There were 512 (64.24%) students with global PSQI score ≥5 indicating poor sleep quality. The mean GPA of poor sleepers was 2.92 ± 1.09 which was significantly lower than that of good sleepers (p < 0.0001). In the group of students who scored lower GPA (2.0-2.7), 28.2% had very bad subjective sleep quality, 29.05% had sleep latency of 16-30 min, 29.4% had sleep duration of <5-7 h, 27.8% had sleep efficiency of <85%, and 37.7% experienced daytime dysfunction almost every day.CONCLUSION: Medical students of Pakistan have poor sleep quality which has a negative impact on their academic performance. Adequate sleep is essential to refresh the students every day and help them in learning and memory processing. Medical students and their facilitators should comprehend the negative effects of sleep deprivation on student academics and should take adequate measures to improve the sleep quality of students.

Abstract:Purpose of ReviewSeveral studies have found that medical students have a significant prevalence of sleep issues, such as poor sleep quality, excessive daytime sleepiness, and inadequate sleep duration. The purpose of this review is to carefully evaluate the current research on sleep problems among medical students and, as a result, estimate the prevalence of these disturbances. The EMBASE, PsychINFO, PubMed/MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Web of Science and retrieved article reference lists were rigorously searched and rated for quality. Random effects meta-analysis was performed to compute estimates.Recent FindingsThe current meta-analysis revealed an alarming estimated pooled prevalence of poor sleep quality (K = 95, N = 54894) of 55.64% [95%CI 51.45%; 59.74%]. A total of 33.32% [95%CI 26.52%; 40.91%] of the students (K = 28, N = 10122) experienced excessive sleepiness during the day. The average sleep duration for medical students (K = 35, N = 18052) is only 6.5 h per night [95%CI 6.24; 6.64], which suggests that at least 30% of them get less sleep than the recommended 7–9 h per night.SummarySleep issues are common among medical students, making them a genuine problem. Future research should focus on prevention and intervention initiatives aimed at these groups.

Abstract:Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the poor sleep hygiene practices of medical students, causing sleep deprivation, and any negative effects on physical and cognitive health of the adult population in Karachi. Participant: The participant for this study were the medical students enrolled in six medical colleges in Karachi during 2021-2022. Methods : The data was collected from 200 medical students using questionnaire based survey. Data was analysed using SPSS version 20. t-test and Chi-square (χ2) test was used for the best data analysis. P-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant in case of comparative analysis. Results: The majority students did not follow sleep hygiene protocols. Concerning the psychological and cognitive effects of poor sleep hygiene practices, more than 76% participants reported feeling sleep deprived, and experienced physical symptoms. Conclusion: Our findings support the use of sleep-hygiene awareness as a prevention strategy to improve university students’ sleep practices, preventing sleep deprivation.
