Abstract:Background: Imposter syndrome is a psychological condition in which a person's fails to acknowledge and recognize their achievements regardless of having proof for fear they might come across as a fraud. Objectives: To find out the rate of imposter syndrome and its relation to grade and gender among medical students. Subjects and Method: A cross-sectional study conducted between December 2023 and February 2024, among a convenient sample of students from college of medicine, Al –Mustansiriyah University. Data was collected via self – administrated questionnaire based on Clance Imposter Phenomenon Scale (CIPS) to determine the prevalence of imposter syndrome. Results: Five hundred and fifty-three students enrolled in this study. According to Clance IP scale, 281(50.8%) of the study group were designated as moderate Imposter characteristics. The results showed that moderate Imposter characteristics was observed among 109 (46.58%) of male students and 172 (53.92%) of female students. Moreover, intense IP experiences was noticed more among male students (6.41%) in comparison to (4.39%) of female students. The results demonstrated that moderate Imposter characteristics was a shared complained among the four grades students enrolled in the study, as (47%,51.56%,53.41%& 51.85%) of the 2nd ,3rd ,4th and 5th students respectively. Furthermore, 5th grade students reported the highest rate (8.64%) of intense IP experiences in comparison to other grades. Conclusion: The imposter phenomenon exists in a meaningfully high rate among medical students. Both genders are at equivalent risk of having an imposter phenomenon. Medical college administrations need to implemented some interventions that can address this problem and improve the wellness of medical students.

Abstract:A simple protocol for the synthesis of 3-amino-[1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-a]pyridines is reported. The newly developed one-pot methodology involves the reaction of hydrazinopyridine with isothiocyanates to give the corresponding thiosemicarbazides, which are further desulfurized in situ using polymer-supported Mukaiyama's reagent to promote the final cyclization and formation of the central core. Aryl isothiocyanates bearing both electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups are well tolerated, and the expected compounds were obtained in excellent purities and yields after removal of salts with a SPE-NH2 column. This methodology proved to be robust in the extension to 3-amino-[1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-a]-pyrazines and 3-amino-[1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-c]-pyrimidines, and no significant differences were noticed in terms of purities and yields. The straightforward protocol developed, mix, filter, and evaporate, is appropriate for performing multiple reactions in parallel fashion without need of purification.
Impostor phenomenon: Prevalence among 1st year medical students and strategies for mitigation

Abstract:Impostor phenomenon (IP) is described as a pattern typified by doubting one's accomplishments and a persistent fear of being exposed as a fraud. These feelings of self-doubt are pervasive along the medical education continuum, beginning with medical students where IP has been associated with emotional stress, physical exhaustion, depression, and anxiety. We, therefore, conducted an interactive workshop with first-year medical students to educate them about the manifesting patterns and risk factors of IP and strategies to mitigate these feelings. The 60-min workshop began with participants voluntarily completing the Young Imposter Scale (YIS) followed by an interactive presentation that reviewed the literature related to IP and its prevalence in medicine. Participants were then assigned to small groups where they discussed three cases of IP in academia and the medical profession. Medical school faculty acted as facilitators and utilized pre-designed prompt questions to stimulate discussion. Students re-convened for a large group report out, where each group shared main discussion points. The session ended with facilitators discussing IP mitigation strategies that can be implemented at the individual, peer, and institutional levels. Participants were also invited to complete a post-workshop evaluation. Fifty first-year medical students participated in the session. A total of 49 (96 %) completed the YIS and post-workshop evaluation. Nineteen (40 %) participants obtained scores on the YIS to indicate a positive finding of IP. The percentage of female medical students meeting the threshold for IP was significantly higher (84 %, n = 41 vs 16 %, n = 7) than male medical students. The workshop was effective at identifying IP and associated risk factors and providing mitigation strategies, with 95.8 % of participants agreeing or strongly agreeing. In qualitative feedback, participants reported that the workshop was "very interactive", "provided strategies to manage impostor syndrome" and "helped me become more vulnerable with my peers." This workshop provided a novel interactive and effective method to increase medical students' awareness about IP which can be employed as a strategy to enhance student's wellness.

Abstract:We have studied friction and dissipation in single and bilayer graphene films grown epitaxially on SiC. The friction on SiC is greatly reduced by a single layer of graphene and reduced by another factor of 2 on bilayer graphene. The friction contrast between single and bilayer graphene arises from a dramatic difference in electron-phonon coupling, which we discovered by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Bilayer graphene as a lubricant outperforms even graphite due to reduced adhesion.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Impostor phenomenon occurs when high-achieving individuals have persistent self-doubt despite objective measures of competence and success, and has been associated with professional burnout and attenuated career advancement in medical specialties. This study aimed to define the incidence and severity of the impostor phenomenon in academic plastic surgery.METHODS: A cross-sectional survey containing the Clance Impostor Phenomenon Scale (0-100; higher scores indicating greater severity of impostor phenomenon) was distributed to residents and faculty from 12 academic plastic surgery institutions across the United States. Generalized linear regression was used to assess demographic and academic predictors of impostor scores.RESULTS: From a total of 136 resident and faculty respondents (response rate, 37.5%), the mean impostor score was 64 (SD 14), indicating frequent impostor phenomenon characteristics. On univariate analysis, mean impostor scores varied by gender (Female: 67.3 vs. Male: 62.0; p=0.03) and academic position (Residents: 66.5 vs. Attendings: 61.6; p=0.03), but did not vary by race/ethnicity, post-graduate year of training among residents, or academic rank, years in practice, or fellowship training among faculty (all p>0.05). After multivariable adjustment, female gender was the only factor associated with higher impostor scores among plastic surgery residents and faculty (Estimate 2.3; 95% Confidence Interval 0.03-4.6; p=0.049).CONCLUSION: The prevalence of the impostor phenomenon may be high among residents and faculty in academic plastic surgery. Impostor characteristics appear to be tied more to intrinsic characteristics, including gender, rather than years in residency or practice. Further research is needed to understand the influence of impostor characteristics on career advancement in plastic surgery.

Abstract:Theory: Impostor phenomenon (IP) refers to people's feelings of intellectual fraudulence and fear of being "discovered," despite contradicting evidence of success. Due to its association with burnout and distress, it is progressively being studied in medicine. While various explanations for IP have been discussed in the literature, the role of motivation has largely been neglected. Hypotheses: Using self-determination theory (SDT) as a lens, it was hypothesized that different general causality orientations (impersonal, control, autonomy), domain-specific types of motivation (autonomous vs. controlled) toward going to medical school, and levels of satisfaction of basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, relatedness) in the medical program, would each predict severity of IP symptoms. Method: A total of 1,450 medical students from three Canadian institutions were invited to complete a survey containing the Clance Impostor Phenomenon Scale and scales derived from SDT's mini theories: basic psychological needs theory, causality orientations theory, and organismic integration theory. We explored the prevalence of IP among the students and used regression to capture variable relationships, accounting for gender effects. Results: Data from 277 (19.1%) students were assessed, 73% of whom reported moderate or worse IP symptoms. Having an impersonal general causality orientation, more controlled motivation toward going to medical school, and lower need satisfaction in the medical program, each related to increased IP severity. Together, these motivational factors accounted for 30.3%, 13.6%, and 21.8% of the variance in students' IP severity, respectively. Conclusions: Findings from this study suggest that students who are more self-determined (both in general and in medical school), and whose basic psychological needs are more supported in their medical program, will experience less frequent and severe IP symptoms. Preliminary explanations and implications of these findings are discussed within the medical education context.

Abstract:Background Imposter syndrome describes an internal experience of intellectual fraud, where individuals attribute their academic or occupational endeavors and achievements primarily to luck rather than to their diligent efforts. Additionally, the stringent standards and prerequisites set by medical institutions create an environment conducive to impostorism among medical students. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and severity of imposter syndrome among medical students at the University of Sharjah. Methodology This research was designed as a descriptive cross-sectional study. A total of 400 participants enrolled in the study using non-probability convenience sampling, but 399 participants, 49.4% (197) from colleges of medicine and 50.6% (202) from dentistry, successfully completed the questionnaire. Participants completed a questionnaire containing the Clance Imposter Phenomenon Scale. Statistical associations between variables were tested using the chi-square test. Individuals with chronic medical conditions or those using medications with known psychiatric side effects were excluded. Results The analyzed sample comprised 399 students, with 64.7% females and 35.3% males. Most respondents were from year 2 (21.3%, 85), while the fewest were from year 5 (18.3%, 73). The majority of students fell into the categories of moderate (46.4%, 185) and frequent (35.8%, 143) imposter experiences. Among all investigated characteristics, pure academic factors such as field of study (p = 0.001), study phases (p = 0.032), advisor's attitude (p = 0.029), and comparison with peers' performance and grades (p = 0.024 and <0.001, respectively) exhibited the highest significant association with the severity of imposter syndrome. Conclusions This study revealed a high prevalence of imposter syndrome among medical students, emphasizing the need for comprehensive strategies and interventions targeting academically associated risk factors to alleviate the burden of imposter syndrome.

Abstract:Imposter syndrome is a psychological phenomenon that affects individuals who doubt their skills and abilities, despite possessing the necessary competencies. This can lead to a lack of confidence and poor performance. While research has explored the impacts of imposter syndrome on students and professionals in various fields, there is limited knowledge on how it affects code comprehension in software engineering. In this exploratory study, we investigate the prevalence of imposter syndrome among final-year undergraduate computer science students and its effects on their code comprehension cognition using an eye tracker and heart rate monitor. Key findings demonstrate that students identifying as male exhibit lower imposter syndrome levels when analyzing code, and higher imposter syndrome is associated with increased time reviewing a code snippet and a lower likelihood of solving it correctly. This study provides initial data on this topic and establishes a foundation for further research to support student academic success and improve developer productivity and mental well-being.

Abstract:The Impostor Phenomenon (IP) is often discussed as a problem in the field of computer science, but there has yet to be an empirical study to establish its prevalence among CS students. One survey by the Blind app found that a high number of software engineers at some of the largest technology companies self-reported feelings of Impostor Syndrome; however, self-reporting of Impostor Syndrome is not the standard diagnostic for identifying whether an individual exhibits feelings of the Impostor Phenomenon. In this work, the established Clance IP Scale is used to identify the prevalence of IP among graduate and undergraduate computer science students at a large research-intensive North American institution. Among this population of over 200 students, 57% were found to exhibit frequent feelings of the Impostor Phenomenon with a larger fraction of women (71%) experiencing frequent feelings of the Imposter Phenomenon than men (52%). Additionally, IP was found to have greater prevalence among computer science students than among students of other populations from comparable studies. Due to the negative impacts associated with feelings of the Impostor Phenomenon, computer science education should work to improve student awareness and help student cope with these feelings.

Abstract:Journal of Medical Education and Curricular Development, Volume 10, Issue , January-December 2023. OBJECTIVESImpostor Phenomenon (IP) describes feelings of distrust in one's own capabilities or accomplishments. This experience exists across many professional settings, affecting men and women across diverse backgrounds. IP has not been studied within a military health system. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of IP among physicians at a military hospital.METHODSAn online survey was constructed incorporating the Clance Impostor Phenomenon Scale (CIPS) and demographic data. All physicians at the institution received the survey link via email and the survey remained open for 1 month for completion. Multivariable analysis was performed to identify significant differences among groups as well as characteristics associated with IP. Exploratory factor analysis was used to examine the factor structure of the CIPS.RESULTSThe response rate was 25% (94/376). Forty-one respondents (44.1%) had CIPS scores ranging between 41 and 60, classifying the respondent as having moderate IP experiences. Differences in scores were noted for age and years of experience (both P < .01). No differences were noted based on gender, self-reported race/ethnicity, or surgical versus nonsurgical specialty. Active-duty respondents had a mean IP score of 62 (SD = 16) and civilian respondents had a mean IP score of 49 (SD = 12, P < .01).CONCLUSIONWith nearly half (46.3%) of respondents reporting frequent or intense IP experiences, this study underscores the pervasiveness of the issue and indicates concordance with previously published data. IP is not limited to certain subgroups or gender identity but rather is a common issue which may negatively affect a physician's well-being.
Impostor Phenomenon Among Recently Graduated General Surgeons

Abstract:Background: Imposter phenomenon can occur in highly competitive fields causing internal feelings of fraud and self-doubt. Significant imposterism has been recently reported amongst general surgery residents. Study design: We hypothesized that attending surgeons, navigating the transition into independent practice, would report a similar experience. We surveyed and collected Clance Imposter Phenomenon Scale (CIPS) scores from 24 Army general surgeons within 4 years of graduation. Results: Nearly all exhibited at least moderate imposterism, and over half reported significant or intense imposterism. Women reported statistically higher scores than men. Surgeons who engaged in off-duty employment or participated in mentorship were less likely to have significant or intense imposterism. Conclusion: Transition to practice is a challenging and highly variable time for new surgeons. Identifying factors that attenuate these feelings could help with early career advancement.

Abstract:Retroviral genomes are assembled from two sense-strand RNAs by noncovalent interactions at their 5′ ends, forming a dimer. The RNA dimerization domain is a potential target for antiretroviral therapy and represents a compelling RNA folding problem. The fundamental dimerization unit for the Moloney murine sarcoma gamma retrovirus spans a 170-nucleotide minimal dimerization active sequence. In the dimer, two self-complementary sequences, PAL1 and PAL2, form intermolecular duplexes, and an SL1-SL2 (stem-loop) domain forms loop-loop base pairs, mediated by GACG tetraloops, and extensive tertiary interactions. To develop a framework for assembly of the retroviral RNA dimer, we quantified the stability of and established nucleotide resolution secondary structure models for sequence variants in which each motif was compromised. Base pairing and tertiary interactions between SL1-SL2 domains contribute a large free energy increment of -10 kcal/mol. In contrast, even though the PAL1 and PAL2 intermolecular duplexes span 10 and 16 bp in the dimer, respectively, they contribute only -2.5 kcal/mol to stability, roughly equal to a single new base pair. First, these results emphasize that the energetic costs for disrupting interactions in the monomer state nearly balance the PAL1 and PAL2 base pairing interactions that form in the dimer. Second, intermolecular duplex formation plays a biological role distinct from simply stabilizing the structure of the retroviral genomic RNA dimer.
Perfectionism, impostor phenomenon, and mental health in medicine: a literature review

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: The aims of this review, focused on medical students, residents, and physicians, were a) to determine the levels of perfectionism and prevalence of impostor phenomenon, b) to assess the relationship between perfectionism, impostor phenomenon, and mental health, and c) explore how medical culture may influence these personality characteristics.METHODS: A narrative literature review was conducted. Search terms were entered into PubMed, PsychINFO, Web of Science, EMBASE, and Google Scholar without date or geographic restrictions. The McMaster Critical Review Forms for Quantitative and Qualitative Studies were used for article appraisal. Final decisions on inclusion and exclusion were reached through discussion. Sixteen articles were included in this review and summarized in a data extraction table.RESULTS: Medical students had similar perfectionism scores to other student groups but scored lower in maladaptive perfectionism. The overall prevalence of the impostor phenomenon ranged from 22.5% to 46.6%. More females (41% - 52%) experienced clinical levels of impostor phenomenon compared to males (23.7% - 48%). Most studies did not find an association between the impostor phenomenon and academic year of training. Both personality characteristics were associated with negative mental health effects. Medical culture can train for and/or exacerbate these characteristics, affecting professional identity formation. Both characteristics contribute to distress for learners during commonly-used teaching methods in medical education.CONCLUSIONS: Comprehensive changes in medical education that consider the relationship between medical culture, professional identity formation, impostor phenomenon, and perfectionism are needed. Longitudinal studies will help identify the implications of these findings for professional identity formation and medical education.
Impostor Feelings of Music Education Graduate Students

Abstract:Impostor phenomenon (IP) is the psychological construct used to describe potentially debilitating feelings of fraud and fear of being exposed as a phony in individuals who are actually high achieving and successful. The purpose of this study was to investigate the IP feelings of music education graduate students. A total of 130 master’s and doctoral students completed a survey that included the Clance IP Scale, the Graduate Music Student Scale, and demographic items. Results indicated that impostor feelings were present in a substantial percentage of the participants. Full-time student status was associated with stronger IP responses than part-time status, as was working on the degree face-to-face versus hybrid. More frequent and intense impostor feelings were experienced by females versus males, participants ages 26 to 35, students who were not married or in a committed relationship, and those who were the first in their family to attend graduate school. Master’s and doctoral students’ IP responses were not different, but successive year in the graduate program was associated with stronger impostor feelings. Based on the possible detrimental effects of strong impostor feelings, the findings should raise concern for students, their instructors, and their mentors.

Imposter Phenomenon in Pediatric Residency: An Empirical Simulation-Based Educational Study

Abstract:The imposter phenomenon (IP) may have a negative impact on the ability of healthcare providers to make difficult and accurate decisions. This study presents an empirical approach, segregating the real imposters based on a simulation, and aims to investigate the prevalence and severity of IP and evaluate the attitude in the decision-making process of pediatric residents with impostorism. A simulation-based case study with the 113 pediatric residents was performed with the Clance Imposter Phenomenon Scale to identify IP scores and appropriate management skills for the case. The collected data were divided and combined into different categories based on the IP scale scores and the success of case management to further detect how real imposters were affected. Our study revealed that 24 (21.2%) of residents have moderate, 33 (25.7%) of residents have frequent, and 29 (29.2%) of residents have intense impostorism feelings. The imposter scores were found to be higher among female participants (P = .006). However, when considering the prevalence of significant impostorism (defined as both frequent and intense), there was no statistically significant difference between females and males (P = .088). The data indicated that an increase in IP scores was associated with a higher likelihood of delayed pressing the help button for both the overall and post-exclusion groups (P < .001). The analysis also revealed a significant correlation and a monotonic-linear trend between IP scores and the decision-making process, even after excluding the unsuccessful participants (P < .001). This is the first study to demonstrate the prevalence of IP among pediatric residents, potentially leading to challenges in patient care and resulting in delayed decisionmaking and self-doubt with feelings of inadequacy. The findings support the claim that higher imposter scores are associated with a greater tendency to seek help from more experienced individuals, even when fully capable of managing cases independently. This emphasizes the importance of awareness about the IP, as these factors can directly impact both the well-being of trainees and patient care outcomes.

Abstract:Objectives To characterise the prevalence of impostor phenomenon (IP; tendency for high‐achieving individuals to perceive themselves as fraudulent in their successes) amongst attending staff in urology, to identify variables that predict more severe impostorism, and to study the association of IP with burnout. Subjects and Methods A survey composed of the Clance Impostor Phenomenon Scale (CIPS), demographic information, practice details, and burnout levels was e‐mailed to urologists via urological subspecialty societies. Survey results were analysed to identify associations between IP severity, survey respondent characteristics, and symptoms of professional burnout. This study was conducted in the United States of America. Results A total of 614 survey responses were received (response rate 11.0%). In all, 40% (n = 213) of responders reported CIPS scores qualifying as either 'frequent' or 'intense' impostorism (i.e., scores of 61–100).
