Quercetin Alleviates Subarachnoid Hemorrhage‐induced Early Brain Injury via Inhibiting Ferroptosis in the rat model

Abstract:Early brain injury (EBI) refers to a series of pathophysiological brain lesions that occur within 72 hours after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), which is an extremely crucial factor in the poor prognosis of patients. In EBI, ferroptosis has been proven to cause neuronal death. Quercetin (QCT) is effective in deactivating reactive oxygen species (ROS), inhibiting lipid peroxidation, and even chelating iron, but its role in SAH remains unclear. In this study, the mortality rate, severity grade of SAH, brain water content, blood‐brain barrier permeability, and neurological function of the rats were detected. Moreover, mitochondrial morphology in cortical neurons were observed and their sizes were subsequently quantified. The levels of lipid peroxidation on glutathione and malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH‐Px) were determined, whereas the protein expressions of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), SLC7A11 (xCT), transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1), and ferroportin‐1 (FPN1) were analyzed by western immunoblotting. The neurodegeneration involved in EBI was investigated by fluoro‐Jade C staining, while iron staining was utilized to measure iron content. Our results showed that inhibition of ferroptosis by QCT could suppress EBI and improve neurological function in SAH rats. QCT increased the expression levels of GPX4, xCT, and FPN1, while downregulated TfR1, and exerted protective effects on neurons as well as alleviated iron accumulation and lipid peroxidation in the cortex of SAH rats. In conclusion, our study revealed that QCT might alleviate the EBI by inhibiting ferroptosis in SAH rats.

Abstract:Ferroptosis is a form of iron-dependent regulated cell death. Evidence of its existence and the effects of its inhibitors on subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is still lacking. In the present study, we found that liproxstatin-1 protected HT22 cells against hemin-induced injury by protecting mitochondrial functions and ameliorating lipid peroxidation. In <i>in vivo</i> experiments, we demonstrated the presence of characteristic shrunken mitochondria in ipsilateral cortical neurons after SAH. Moreover, liproxstatin-1 attenuated the neurological deficits and brain edema, reduced neuronal cell death, and restored the redox equilibrium after SAH. The inhibition of ferroptosis by liproxstatin-1 was associated with the preservation of glutathione peroxidase 4 and the downregulation of acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 4 as well as cyclooxygenase 2. In addition, liproxstatin-1 decreased the activation of microglia and the release of IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α. These data enhance our understanding of cell death after SAH and shed light on future preclinical studies.

Abstract:A human cDNA previously isolated by virtue of its ability to complement partially the ultraviolet sensitivity of a xeroderma pigmentosum cell line was further characterized. The transcription unit is expressed as a single 4.0-kb mRNA that encodes a novel 63-kDa cytoplasmic protein, possibly initiating from an internal AUG codon. The gene encoding this protein, named UVRAG, has been extremely well conserved during evolution, implying an important role for this gene product in cell metabolism. The transcribed mRNA is constitutively expressed in a wide variety of human tissues. The protein encoded by this gene is predicted to contain a coiled-coil structure and is likely to be metabolically unstable based on the occurrence of a strong PEST domain. UVRAG was assigned to human chromosome 11 by Southern hybridization to a somatic cell hybrid panel. Fluorescence in situ hybridization coupled with PCR analysis of human/rodent somatic cell hybrids containing segments of human chromosome 11 has localized this gene to a subregion of 11q13 in between the D11S916 and the D11S906 loci. Importantly, this region has been shown to be amplified in a variety of human malignancies, including breast cancer.

Abstract:Ferroptosis is a regulated cell death that characterizes the lethal lipid peroxidation and iron overload, which may contribute to early brain injury (EBI) pathogenesis after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Although Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), a class III histone deacetylase, has been proved to have endogenous neuroprotective effects on the EBI following SAH, the role of SIRT1 in ferroptosis has not been studied. Hence, we designed the current study to determine the role of ferroptosis in the EBI and explore the correlation between SIRT1 and ferroptosis after SAH. The pathways of ferroptosis were examined after experimental SAH in vivo (prechiasmatic cistern injection mouse model) and in HT-22 cells stimulated by oxyhemoglobin (oxyHb) in vitro. Then, ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1) was used further to determine the role of ferroptosis in EBI. Finally, we explored the correlation between SIRT1 and ferroptosis via regulating the expression of SIRT1 by resveratrol (RSV) and selisistat (SEL). Our results showed that ferroptosis was involved in the pathogenesis of EBI after SAH through multiple pathways, including acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 4 (ACSL4) activation, iron metabolism disturbance, and the downregulation of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) and ferroptosis suppressor protein 1 (FSP1). Inhibition of ferroptosis by Fer-1 significantly alleviated oxidative stress-mediated brain injury. SIRT1 activation could suppress SAH-induced ferroptosis by upregulating the expression of GPX4 and FSP1. Therefore, ferroptosis could be a potential therapeutic target for SAH, and SIRT1 activation is a promising method to inhibit ferroptosis.

Abstract:Background: Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a life -threatening cerebrovascular disease, where early brain injury (EBI) stands as a primary contributor to mortality and unfavorable patient outcomes. Neuronal ferroptosis emerges as a key pathological mechanism underlying EBI in SAH. Targeting ferroptosis for therapeutic intervention in SAH holds significant promise as a treatment strategy. Methods: SAH model was induced via intravascular puncture and quantitatively assessed the presence of neuronal ferroptosis in the early phase of SAH using FJC staining, Prussian blue staining, as well as malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) measurements. Hyaluronic acid-coated ursolic acid nanoparticles (HA-PEG-UA NPs) were prepared using the solvent evaporation method. We investigated the in vivo distribution of HA-PEG-UA NPs in SAH model through IVIS and fluorescence observation, and examined their impact on short-term neurological function and cortical neurological injury. Finally, we assessed the effect of UA on the Nrf-2/SLC7A11/GPX4 axis via Western Blot analysis. Results: We successfully developed self-assembled UA NPs with hyaluronic acid to target the increased CD44 expression in the SAH-afflicted brain. The resulting HA-PEG-UA NPs facilitated delivery and enrichment of UA within the SAH-affected region. The targeted delivery of UA to the SAH region can effectively inhibit neuronal ferroptosis, improve neurological deficits, and prognosis in mice. Its mechanism of action is associated with the activation of the Nrf-2/SLC7A11/GPX4 signaling pathway. Conclusions: Brain-targeted HA-PEG-UA NPs was successfully developed and hold the potential to enhance SAH prognosis by limiting neuronal ferroptosis via modulation of the Nrf-2/SLC7A11/GPX4 signal.

Abstract:Post-subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) survivors experience severe neurological disability. Previous studies implicate that ferroptosis is involved in SAH. Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death caused by the accumulation of lipid peroxidation. However, the role and the mechanism of ferroptosis in SAH are still uncertain and need further study. Thus, we investigated the effect of ferroptosis on early brain injury (EBI) after SAH and further clarified its mechanism. The results showed ferroptosis characteristics appeared in the cerebral cortex of rats with SAH after 24 h. However, ferroptosis could be rescued by Ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1). Treatment with Fer-1 could increase SLc7a11 and GPx4, and alleviated damage-associated molecular pattern molecules and inflammatory cytokines. Similarly, blood-brain barrier impairment, brain edema, behavioral deficits and neuronal damage were reduced by inhibiting ferroptosis. More importantly, the p53 inhibitor pifithrin-α could significantly block cortical SAH-induced ferroptosis. Collectively, these results indicated that ferroptosis aggravated EBI after SAH was partly dependent on p53, and inhibiting ferroptosis might be an effective therapeutic target for EBI.

Abstract:Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a cerebrovascular accident with an acute onset, severe disease characteristics, and poor prognosis. Within 72 hours after the occurrence of SAH, a sequence of pathological changes occur in the body including blood-brain barrier breakdown, cerebral edema, and reduced cerebrovascular flow that are defined as early brain injury (EBI), and it has been demonstrated that EBI exhibits an obvious correlation with poor prognosis. Ferroptosis is a novel programmed cell death mode. Ferroptosis is induced by the iron-dependent accumulation of lipid peroxides and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Ferroptosis involves abnormal iron metabolism, glutathione depletion, and lipid peroxidation. Recent study revealed that ferroptosis is involved in EBI and is significantly correlated with poor prognosis. With the gradual realization of the importance of ferroptosis, an increasing number of studies have been conducted to examine this process. This review summarizes the latest work in this field and tracks current research progress. We focused on iron metabolism, lipid metabolism, reduction systems centered on the GSH/GPX4 system, other newly discovered GSH/GPX4-independent antioxidant systems, and their related targets in the context of early brain injury. Additionally, we examined certain ferroptosis regulatory mechanisms that have been studied in other fields but not in SAH. A link between death and oxidative stress has been described. Additionally, we highlight the future research direction of ferroptosis in EBI of SAH, and this provides new ideas for follow-up research.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Aims</h3><p>Acyl‐CoA synthetase long chain family member 4 (ACSL4) is closely related to tumor genesis and development in certain tissues. However, the function of ACSL4 in early brain injury (EBI) caused by subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is unclear. In this study, we investigated the expression patterns and role of ACSL4 in SAH and post‐SAH EBI using a rat model of SAH.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Methods</h3><p>The rat model of SAH was induced by autologous blood injection into the prechiasmatic cistern of rats. We also used two specific inhibitors of ferroptosis (Ferrostatin‐1 and Liproxstatin‐1) to investigate the role of ferroptosis in EBI.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Results</h3><p>We found that ACSL4 levels in brain tissue increased significantly in post‐SAH EBI. Inhibiting the expression of ACSL4 using small interfering RNAs alleviated inflammation, blood‐brain barrier (BBB) impairment, oxidative stress, brain edema, and behavioral and cognitive deficits, and increased the number of surviving neurons, after SAH. Similar effects were obtained by suppressing ferroptosis.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Conclusions</h3><p>ACSL4 exacerbated SAH‐induced EBI by mediating ferroptosis. These findings may provide a theoretical basis for potential therapy aimed at alleviating post‐SAH EBI.</p></section>

Increased phosphorylation and redistribution of NMDA receptors between synaptic lipid rafts and post‐synaptic densities following transient global ischemia in the rat brain

Abstract:Ischemia results in increased phosphorylation of NMDA receptors. To investigate the possible role of lipid rafts in this increase, lipid rafts and post‐synaptic densities (PSDs) were isolated by the extraction of rat brain synaptosomes with Triton X‐100 followed by sucrose density gradient centrifugation. Lipid rafts accounted for the majority of PSD‐95, whereas SAP102 was predominantly located in PSDs. Between 50 and 60% of NMDA receptors were associated with lipid rafts. Greater than 85–90% of Src and Fyn were present in lipid rafts, whereas Pyk2 was mainly associated with PSDs. Lipid rafts and PSDs were isolated from animals subjected to 15 min of global ischemia followed by 6 h of recovery. Ischemia did not affect the yield, density, flotillin‐1 or cholesterol content of lipid rafts. Following ischemia, the phosphorylation of NR1 by protein kinase C and tyrosine phosphorylation of NR2A and NR2B was increased in both lipid rafts and PSDs, with a greater increase in tyrosine phosphorylation occurring in the raft fraction. Following ischemia, NR1, NR2A and NR2B levels were elevated in PSDs and reduced in lipid rafts. The findings are consistent with a model involving close interaction between lipid rafts and PSDs and a role for lipid rafts in ischemia‐induced signaling pathways.
Taurine attenuates neuronal ferroptosis by regulating GABAB/AKT/GSK3β/β-catenin pathway after subarachnoid hemorrhage

Abstract:Ferroptosis, characterized by lipid peroxidation and intracellular iron accumulation, has been reported to be involving in the pathophysiological of early brain injury (EBI) after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Although taurine reportedly yields neuroprotective effects in multiple central neurological diseases and can attenuated neuron damage after stroke, its role in EBI after SAH remains unclear. The present study indicated that taurine levels in cerebrospinal fluid were significantly reduced in SAH patients, which suggested that taurine treatment after SAH could improve neurological impairment, oxidative stress, iron accumulation, BBB integrity and neuronal ferroptosis in the SAH model in vivo. Taurine could attenuate MDA levels and ROS accumulation and regulate the expression of SLC7A11 and GPX4 and the AKT/GSK3β pathway in vitro. GABAB receptor inhibition and Ly294002 could reverse the therapeutic effects of taurine and significantly downregulate the levels of p-AKT, p-GSK3β, β-catenin, SLC7A11 and GPX4. The protective effects of taurine on SLC7A11 and GPX4 expression were reversed by ICG001 treatment in vitro. Taken together, our findings revealed that taurine could improve neurological function and alleviate cerebral edema, oxidative stress and BBB disruption after SAH, which reduced neuronal ferroptosis by regulating the GABAB/AKT/GSK3β/β-catenin signaling pathway.
LPCAT3 exacerbates early brain injury and ferroptosis after subarachnoid hemorrhage in rats

Abstract:AIMS: Lysophosphatidylcholine acyltransferase 3 (LPCAT3) is known to play a pivotal role in lipid metabolism, but its role in the early brain injury (EBI) following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) remains unclear. This study provides insights into LPCAT3 expression alterations and functional implications in EBI following SAH.METHODS: SAH models of adult male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were established by intravascular perforation. Lentivirus vectors were administered by intracerebroventricular injection (i.c.v.) to either induce LPCAT3 overexpression or knockdown 14 days before SAH induction. Western blot, immunofluorescence, Nissl staining, MDA detection, ROS detection, iron content detection, and short-term and long-term neurobehavioral tests were performed to investigate the effects of regulated-LPCAT3 after SAH.RESULTS: LPCAT3 levels were found to be significantly elevated in SAH. Suppression of LPCAT3 expression via shRNA improved oxidative stress, reduced brain edema, alleviated behavioral and cognitive deficits following SAH and decreased neuronal death, while upregulating LPCAT3 expression showed opposing effects.CONCLUSION: LPCAT3 is involved in SAH-induced EBI and associated with ferroptosis. Our findings provide a referential basis for potential therapeutic interventions aimed at alleviating EBI following SAH.

Abstract:Motor neurone disease (MND) is a relentlessly progressive neurodegenerative disease with a median survival of 1–3 years. It results in the death of nearly 400 Australians per year.1 The management of MND remains problematic, tending to be offered in a heterogeneous and ad-hoc fashion across Australia. This heterogeneity arises in part from a lack of understanding of the aetiology of the disease and its progression in different patients,2 the absence of established guidelines for standard care,3 and a lack of concentrated experience among medical practitioners, nursing and allied health care workers in treating patients with MND.
The protective mechanism of protein kinase R to inhibit neuronal ferroptosis in cerebral injury from subarachnoid hemorrhage

Abstract:Purpose: To investigate the role and mechanism of protein kinase R (PKR) in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH)-mediated ferroptosis. Methods: A rat SAH model was constructed and treated with PKR inhibitor C16 to observe SAH and neurological impairment in rats and to detect malonaldehyde (MDA), iron ions content, ferritin heavy polypeptide 1 (FTH1) and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), and other related ferroptosis indicators in brain tissue. RNA sequencing analysis was used to investigate the mechanism of PKR, affecting the ferroptosis network of SAH. Results: SAH caused severe fundic hemorrhage, neurological impairment, MDA and iron ion accumulation, and significant decrease in GPX4 and FTH1 levels in rats. C16 treatment significantly improved the above signs caused by SAH. By RNA-seq analysis, brain tissue of SAH-treated rats with SAH and C16 differentially expressed mRNA target genes enriched in stress response and organic developmental signaling pathways. Conclusion: Inhibition of PKR may improve cerebral injury after SAH by inhibiting ferroptosis, and RNA sequencing staged its mechanism of action may be related to the stress response.
Astragaloside IV attenuates ferroptosis after subarachnoid hemorrhage via Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway

Abstract:Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a severe type of stroke featuring exceptionally high rate of morbidity and mortality due to the lack of effective management. Ferroptosis can be defined as a novel iron-dependent programmed cell death in contrast to classical apoptosis and necrosis. Astragaloside IV (AS-IV) is an active ingredient extracted from Astragalus membranaceus with established therapeutic effect on CNS diseases. However, the exact role of ferroptosis in Astragaloside IV-mediated neuroprotection after SAH is yet to be demonstrated. In the present study, the SAH model of SD male rats with endovascular perforation was used to gauge the neuroprotective effect of AS-IV on SAH-induced early brain injury (EBI) and to clarify the potential molecular mechanism. We found that the induction of SAH reduced the levels of SLC7A11 and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) in the brain, exacerbated iron accumulation, enhanced lipid reactive oxygen species (ROS) level, and stimulated neuronal ferroptosis. However, the administration of AS-IV and the ferroptosis inhibitor Ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1) enhanced the antioxidant capacity after SAH and suppressed the accumulation of lipid peroxides. Meanwhile, AS-IV triggered Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway and alleviated ferroptosis due to the induction of SAH. The Nrf2 inhibitor ML385 blocked the beneficial effects of neuroprotection. These results consistently suggest that ferroptosis is profoundly implicated in facilitating EBI in SAH, and that AS-IV thwarts the process of ferroptosis in SAH by activating Nrf2/HO-1 pathway.

Abstract:Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a subtype of stroke marked by elevated mortality and disability rates. Recently, mounting evidence suggests a significant role of ferroptosis in the pathogenesis of ICH. Through a combination of bioinformatics analysis and basic experiments, our goal is to identify the primary cell types and key molecules implicated in ferroptosis post-ICH. This aims to propel the advancement of ferroptosis research, offering potential therapeutic targets for ICH treatment. Our study reveals pronounced ferroptosis in microglia and identifies the target gene, cathepsin B (Ctsb), by analyzing differentially expressed genes following ICH. Ctsb, a cysteine protease primarily located in lysosomes, becomes a focal point in our investigation. Utilizing in vitro and in vivo models, we explore the correlation between Ctsb and ferroptosis in microglia post-ICH. Results demonstrate that ICH and hemin-induced ferroptosis in microglia coincide with elevated levels and activity of Ctsb protein. Effective alleviation of ferroptosis in microglia after ICH is achieved through the inhibition of Ctsb protease activity and protein levels using inhibitors and shRNA. Additionally, a notable increase in m6A methylation levels of Ctsb mRNA post-ICH is observed, suggesting a pivotal role of m6A methylation in regulating Ctsb translation. These research insights deepen our comprehension of the molecular pathways involved in ferroptosis after ICH, underscoring the potential of Ctsb as a promising target for mitigating brain damage resulting from ICH.
Puerarin Attenuates Oxidative Stress and Ferroptosis via AMPK/PGC1α/Nrf2 Pathway after Subarachnoid Hemorrhage in Rats

Abstract:Puerarin was shown to exert anti-oxidative and anti-ferroptosis effects in multiple diseases. The goal of this study was to explore the neuroprotective effect of puerarin on early brain injury (EBI) after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in rats. A total of 177 adult male Sprague Dawley rats were used. SAH was included via endovascular perforation. Intranasal puerarin or intracerebroventricular dorsomorphin (AMPK inhibitor) and SR18292 (PGC1α inhibitor) were administered. The protein levels of pAMPK, PGC1α, Nrf2, 4HNE, HO1, MDA, ACSL4, GSSG, and iron concentration in the ipsilateral hemisphere were significantly increased, whereas SOD, GPX4, and GSH were decreased at 24 h after SAH. Moreover, puerarin treatment significantly increased the protein levels of pAMPK, PGC1α, Nrf2, HO1, SOD, GPX4, and GSH, but decreased the levels of 4HNE, MDA, ACSL4, GSSG, and iron concentration in the ipsilateral hemisphere at 24 h after SAH. Dorsomorphin or SR18292 partially abolished the beneficial effects of puerarin exerted on neurological dysfunction, oxidative stress injury, and ferroptosis. In conclusion, puerarin improved neurobehavioral impairments and attenuated oxidative-stress-induced brain ferroptosis after SAH in rats. The neuroprotection acted through the activation of the AMPK/PGC1α/Nrf2-signaling pathway. Thus, puerarin may serve as new therapeutics against EBI in SAH patients.

Abstract:Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a devastating subtype of stroke because it has few viable therapeutic options to intervene against primary or second brain injury. Recently, evidence has suggested that ferroptosis, a nonapoptotic form of cell death, is involved in ICH. In this study, we examined whether ICH-induced neuron death is partly ferroptotic in humans and assessed its temporal and spatial characteristics in mice. Furthermore, the ferroptosis inhibitor ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1) was used to examine the role of ferroptosis after ICH. Fold changes in ferroptosis-related gene expression, intracellular iron levels, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and both protein levels and cellular localization of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) were measured to monitor ferroptosis. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was also performed to examine the ultrastructure of cells after ICH. We found that the expression level of prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase (PTGS2) was increased in both in vitro and in vivo ICH models; by comparison, expression level of RPL8 was increased in human brain tissue. In mice, iron and MDA levels were significantly increased 3 h after ICH; COX-2 levels were increased at 12 h after ICH and peaked at 3 days after ICH; COX-2 colocalized with NeuN (a neuronal biomarker); and TEM showed that shrunken mitochondria were found at 3 h, 3 days, and 7 days after ICH. Moreover, ICH-induced neurological deficits, memory impairment and brain atrophy were reduced by Fer-1 treatment. Our results demonstrated that neuronal ferroptosis occurs during the acute phase of ICH in brain areas distant from the hematoma and that inhibition of ferroptosis by Fer-1 exerted a long-term cerebroprotective effect.

Abstract:Iron metabolism disturbances play an important role in early brain injury (EBI) after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), and hepcidin largely influences iron metabolism. Importantly, iron metabolism may be associated with ferroptosis, recently a nonapoptotic iron-dependent form of cell death that may have a great impact on brain injury after SAH. We investigated hepcidin on iron metabolism and ferroptosis involving divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1), and ferroportin-1 (FPN1) in a rat model of SAH. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to the endovascular perforation to induce SAH, and treated with heparin (inhibitor of hepcidin), or oncostatin M (OSM, inducer of hepcidin), or ebselen (inhibitor of DMT1) by intracerebroventricular injections. Hepcidin, DMT1, FPN1 and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), were detected by western blot and immunofluorescence. Iron metabolism was detected through Perl’s iron staining and iron content assay. Ferroptosis, the ROS production, lipid peroxidation (LPO) was evaluated by monitoring methane dicarboxylic aldehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) activity, and transmission electron microscopy. Neurological deficit scores, Evans blue staining and brain water content were also determined to detect EBI 72 h after SAH. Our results showed that inhibition of DMT1 by ebselen could suppress iron accumulation and lipid peroxidation, and thereby alleviate ferroptosis and EBI in SAH rats. Heparin downregulated the expression of hepcidin and DMT1, increased FPN1, and exerted protective effects that were equivalent to those of ebselen on ferroptosis and EBI. In addition, OSM increased the expression of hepcidin and DMT1, decreased FPN1, and aggravated ferroptosis and EBI, while the effect on ferroptosis was reversed by ebselen. Therefore, the study revealed that hepcidin could regulate iron metabolism and contribute to ferroptosis via DMT1 signaling activation in rats with EBI after SAH.
