Abstract:Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students in Hong Kong face great challenges in academic learning since for decades oral language has been the only means of communication in classrooms. The establishment of the Sign Bilingualism and Co-enrollment in Deaf Education (SLCO) Program aims to provide an accessible mainstream environment that supports DHH children's education. This study explores the impact of SLCO education on DHH children's academic performance. A longitudinal study was conducted for four cohorts of DHH students ( n = 24) who completed their 6-year primary education at the SLCO school. Data on their academic performance based on standardised assessments in Chinese Language, English Language and Mathematics were collected over the six years of primary education to review their development against normative grade levels and annual growth rates. Results indicate that SLCO-DHH students achieve normative standards in both English Language and Mathematics based on their median grade levels. They do, however, lag behind normative standards by one year in Chinese Language. When their academic development was analysed annually, they were comparable to their hearing peers, with an average growth rate very close to "1" for all three subjects. Additionally, no significant relationships could be found between degrees of hearing loss and speech perception and their academic performance. Instead, early Chinese literacy attainment serves as a strong factor predicting their later academic attainment in both Chinese Language and Mathematics. The SLCO education environment appears to be an education model that effectively reduces barriers to accessing academic content in classrooms and promotes positive academic development.

Abstract:Recent advancement in sign linguistics and sign language acquisition research has enabled us to reconsider the role that sign language may play in bringing up deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children. The education approach of sign bilingualism and co-enrollment (SLCO) has been implemented in Hong Kong for over 10 years and aims to promote social integration and academic attainment of DHH children in an inclusive setting. Four key ingredients have been identified as essential for the SLCO approach: (1) a whole-school approach toward promoting deaf–hearing collaboration; (2) deaf individuals’ involvement in school practices, especially deaf–hearing co-teaching practices in the SLCO classroom; (3) an enriched linguistic context to support bimodal bilingual development of DHH and hearing students; and (4) DHH and hearing students’ active participation in school and social activities. This chapter summarizes how these four factors contribute to the whole-school development toward deaf–hearing collaboration.
Chinese Grammatical Development of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children in a Sign Bilingualism and Coenrollment Program

Abstract:The literacy development of d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) children has always been a matter of grave concern among educators, and grammatical knowledge is said to constitute a major component such development. The present article reports on a study that examined the development of Chinese grammar among groups of d/Dhh and hearing children who received education through a sign bilingualism and coenrollment (SLCO) approach. Findings from administration of a prestandardized assessment tool showed that while the d/Dhh children generally lagged behind their hearing peers at all levels, the gap began to narrow from Primary 2 onward, and they caught up with their hearing peers in most except for a few grammatical constructions by Primary 4. Qualitative analysis revealed a similar developmental profile and similar degrees of difficulty in mastering the more complex constructions in written Chinese between the two groups of children.

The acquisition of Hong Kong Sign Language in deaf and hard-of-hearing children: A longitudinal study of sign language development in a bimodal bilingual co-enrollment programme

Abstract:This study followed the development of Hong Kong Sign Language (HKSL) proficiency in 31 deaf bimodal bilingual children (kindergarten through Primary 6) over two years. The Hong Kong Sign Language Elicitation Tool (HKSL-ET) was used at three time points to elicit the production of agreement, classifier, modal, negation, and wh-question structures. These were scored for accuracy based on specific language features, including classifier handshapes, non-manuals, phonological parameters, sign order, and use of space. Deaf children of hearing parents (dH children) showed significant improvements in accuracy for all structures and features, with most progress occurring between the first two assessments. By the third assessment, dH children showed similar performance to the deaf children of deaf parents (dD children) on most structures and features, but they were still significantly less accurate in their production of classifier constructions and use of space. This, along with an observed negative impact of later ages of acquisition on HKSL accuracy, underscores the importance of early exposure to sign language. Examining the relationship between signed and spoken language proficiency revealed a significant positive correlation between HKSL proficiency and Cantonese verbal expressive ability, suggesting that these languages may have mutually facilitative effects in terms of language development. Our findings highlight the utility of bimodal bilingual education in fostering linguistic development in deaf children.
Implementing co-enrollment in preschool education in China: A case study

Abstract:This study aims to document the implementation of sign bilingualism and co-enrollment education in a kindergarten in Quzhou, Zhejiang Province, China, to identify the major characteristics of the programme, and to report findings of children's language in terms of vocabulary and surveys on the views and attitudes of the stakeholders of the programme, including deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) as well as hearing children and teachers. The results indicate that (a) both deaf and hearing teachers enjoy working in the Sign Bilingualism and Co-enrollment (SLCO) class and believe it is beneficial for their professional development; (b) parents of both DHH children and hearing children are happy to send their children to the SLCO class; (c) the teachers and parents agree that the SLCO programme is helpful for the overall development of not only the DHH children but also the hearing children. They believe that such an environment benefits the children's language and communication skills and the development of self-confidence and social cognition; (d) both the teachers and parents believe that the DHH children and their hearing peers get along well with each other in the SLCO class and also enjoy learning sign language. Furthermore, they all agree that the SLCO programme is promising and should be continued in the current school and implemented in more schools.

Abstract:Since the handover, policymakers in Hong Kong have faced the daunting task of determining the educational roles of two major international languages (Putonghua and English), as well as a vibrant local language (Cantonese), which is the mother tongue of around 90% of the city's predominantly Chinese population. Their response to this unprecedented challenge has been to set the ambitious goal of developing students’ ability to read and write Chinese and English and to speak Cantonese, Putonghua, and English. At the same time, however, they are pursuing policies that in some respects run counter to this commendable if ill-defined aim. This article examines the background to and rationale for the promotion of biliteracy and trilingualism and reviews recent research into the government's major language-in-education initiatives since 1997, namely, the adoption of a compulsory mother-tongue policy at junior secondary level, the recent fine-tuning of this controversial policy, and the use of Putonghua as the medium of instruction in Chinese subjects at primary and secondary levels.

Abstract:Research Findings: This study evaluated the impact of Chinese literacy interventions on Chinese language learning of South Asian children and their mothers in Hong Kong. A total of 44 children and eight of their mothers participated in Chinese literacy interventions that consisted of two approaches - Copying and Morphological Awareness Training (CMAT) and Integrative Perceptual Approach (IPA). Children in the intervention group who underwent four weeks of CMAT followed by four weeks of IPA were compared to a control group of 29 children who only attended regular Chinese classes in their preschools. After controlling for non-verbal intelligence, ANCOVA analyses revealed that the intervention group did significantly better than the control group at posttest in (i) morphological awareness, word reading and writing when taught using CMAT; and (ii) word reading when taught using IPA. Mothers made gains on most Chinese literacy measures and children whose mothers participated in the intervention had higher gains in mean scores relative to their pretest scores on most measures than those whose mothers did not, suggesting the effectiveness of combined child and parent interventions. Practice or Policy: Findings support the development of evidence-based interventions to cater to the language learning needs of SA children and parents.

Abstract:Research Findings: This study evaluated the impacts of a bilingual Chinese-English reading program on Chinese children from low socioeconomic status (SES) families. Ninety-nine children in the third year of kindergarten (K3) were recruited from five local kindergartens in two low-SES districts in Hong Kong, China. Children in the intervention group who participated in 15-weeks of language and literacy intervention were compared to a control group of 40 children who attended only regular literacy classes in their kindergartens. ANCOVA analyses revealed that after controlling for child gender and age, the intervention group performed significantly better than the control group on the posttest in Chinese phonological awareness and morphological awareness, English phonological awareness, vocabulary knowledge, and English word reading. These results point to a reading program's utility, emphasizing multi-component interventions for early bilingual language and literacy learning. Practice or Policy: Findings support the development of locally derived, evidence-based reading programs to cater to low-SES children's learning needs. These findings may also provide research-based evidence for formulating public policies and services, targeting the early language and literacy issues for low-SES children and their families and raising public awareness of the influence of poverty on child development in the early years.

Abstract:Child Language Teaching and Therapy, Ahead of Print. The present study aimed to explore the specific components of home literacy resources (HLR) and parental behaviours during shared book reading (SBR) that may contribute to the language development of Chinese-speaking hearing-impaired children. A total of 90 Chinese-speaking hearing-impaired children aged 3 to 6 years, along with their parents, participated in this study. Following the design of previous studies, we required the parents to complete a questionnaire regarding HLR and parental SBR behaviours, and their hearing-impaired children received a standardised language test. The results showed that such HLR components as storybook capacity at home, weekly frequency of SBR, duration per SBR session, starting age of SBR, and the parental SBR behaviour, parent and child discussing opinions with each other, could significantly account for an additional portion of the variance in children's receptive, expressive, and overall language beyond the demographic variables. It is thus recommended that clinicians share this evidence-based information with parents who have hearing-impaired children to help their children develop language to their fullest potential.

Abstract:This paper presents a targeted system to help Chinese deaf children learn both sign language and Chinese characters in early language learning. The system combines sign recognition and in-air writing techniques with games so that children can practice sign language and Chinese character writing at the same time. Sign recognition is used to assess the accuracy of sign language and in-air writing records the process of writing Chinese characters. In addition, the game adds to the learning fun and makes children more willing to complete learning tasks. We have developed a prototype to evaluate the effectiveness of a simultaneous Chinese sign language and Chinese character teaching system based on gesture recognition and in-air writing. We expect that this system will increase children's willingness and efficiency to learn sign language and Chinese characters, and eventually be used to assist in early language education for deaf children in the Chinese region.

Abstract:Both Chinese and English literacy-related measures and cognitive-linguistic behavioural tasks were tested in second and third graders who were L1 (N=29) and L2 Chinese speakers (N=34), in order to answer the following question: How do these two groups differ in language and cognitive correlates of particular Chinese literacy skills? While the L1 group's scores showed relatively substantial correlations of a range of variables with Chinese word-reading and writing skills, for the L2 group the only correlation was between phonological awareness and literacy skills in both Chinese and English. Phonological awareness skills can be important for learning English as a second language, especially for early decoding and spelling, but a wider range of skills, including morphological awareness skills, visual skills, and orthographic skills, may be necessary for learning Chinese.

Abstract:As an officially trilingual special administrative region of China and an economic powerhouse in Asia, Hong Kong has invested heavily in dual language schools that emphasize learning English alongside of Cantonese or Mandarin at all levels of education. Little research has explored how learning and language use takes shape within these schools, particularly within early childhood educational contexts. This article analyzes how young learners in Hong Kong early childhood program that adheres to an emergent curriculum and inquiry-based pedagogy develop trilingualism though translingual communicative practices. Specifically, we showcase conditions for trilingual participation within one classroom, as well as how children within it negotiated peer relationships through linguistic improvisation and accommodation.

Abstract:Using grounded theory, the researcher posed this question in this qualitative study: What childhood literacy-learning and current literacy-teaching experiences have influenced Chinese Deaf teachers' views on literacy learning? Responses were obtained from Deaf teachers by means of videotaped interviews about their literacy-learning and literacy-teaching experiences. When the interviews, which were conducted in Chinese Sign Language (CSL) glossed to written Chinese and English, were analyzed, six themes emerged. Extracted core categories provide the unique context for a "boomerang effect" related to language and literacy through a bilingual path to literacy. Recommendations for future research using bilingual theory and practice are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract This article describes the application of IR spectroscopic methods in the study of the composition of finished cosmetic products. Four spectroscopic techniques: TS (transmission spectroscopy), PAS (photoacoustic spectroscopy), ATR (attenuated total reflectance) and DRS (diffuse reflectance spectroscopy) were used for this purpose. Tested cosmetic products were of different consistency and application. The choice of spectroscopic techniques was dictated by the physical state and consistency of the sample.
Bilingual families and the home literacy environment: An examination of English and ethnic language activities and outcomes

Abstract:Background Accumulating evidence shows that the home literacy environment (HLE) has a potent and early influence on children's language and literacy development. However, there is a more limited understanding of HLE and its contribution to children's outcomes for simultaneous bilingual children exposed to two languages at home, particularly in the Asian context. Methods In this study with 801 six‐year‐old bilingual learners, HLE and language and literacy outcomes were examined in two languages. Children were assessed in their receptive vocabulary, reading and spelling abilities for English plus their ethnic Asian language (Mandarin Chinese, Malay or Tamil) for a subsample of 374 children. Results Results from factor analyses suggest that HLE for each language within families had a different latent structure, with three to four factors for English (parent involvement, parent habit, child exploration and shared reading) and three factors for the Asian language (parent involvement, parent habit and child interest). Further path analyses show that shared reading had a negative contribution to English outcomes but a positive influence on Asian language outcomes. Conclusions Findings extend existing understanding of HLE structure for bilingual language learners from bilingual families. HLE components contributed differently to bilingual language outcomes, with positive contributions of child exploration to English outcomes and of parent habits including shared reading to Asian language outcomes. Negative relationships for shared reading to English outcomes are also evident and suggest that further research on the long‐term effects of HLE is needed.

Abstract:Children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) are at risk for language and literacy delays, and parent–child book reading can contribute to developing early literacy foundations. Although many parents read with their children, some parents may be unsure how to utilize effective reading strategies to maximize literacy growth. This multiple case pilot study involved four mothers of preschool-age children with hearing loss who used listening and spoken language (LSL) as their mode of communication. After a short training session on strategies to promote child engagement and increased child interaction during storybook reading, results showed parents increased their use of engaging questions, along with a statistically significant increase in each child’s expressive contribution to the reading activity. Retention data indicated sustained parent reading behaviors that promoted child engagement. Providing parents with supported training may help parents implement effective reading strategies to promote literacy growth in young children who are DHH.

Abstract:The purpose of this investigation was to assess the effect of American Sign Language (ASL) instruction on typical hearing kindergarten children's literacy in four specific areas: receptive English vocabulary, expressive English vocabulary, ASL ability, and English emergent reading level. The research was specifically modeled after a 1997 United Kingdom, Sign in Education, project in which a deaf teacher delivered instruction to hearing students using British Sign Language (BSL). The findings from the current United States study indicate hearing kindergarten students receiving ASL instruction made statistically significant gains in their receptive English vocabulary, maintained an age appropriate use of expressive English vocabulary, acquired a sufficient level of ASL phonology and morphology to begin to communicate in the visual‐gestural language, and tested higher than similar students on Marie M. Clay's (1993) reading placement measures.

Abstract:Numerous studies on reading comprehension with monolingual children have shown that oral language, such as vocabulary, is an important factor in predicting reading comprehension success. However, few studies have looked at the reading comprehension performance of bilinguals, and less is known about the contributors to its success, linguistic or otherwise. Based on previous research showing weaker oral language among bilingual children, the goals of the present study are to examine how bilinguals perform in reading comprehension, along with possible contributors such as oral language and home literacy practices, in comparison with their monolingual peers. Participants were 82 children in the third grade who completed standardized language measures assessing vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension and whose parents completed a home literacy questionnaire. Bilingual children's reading comprehension was comparable to monolinguals <i>despite</i> having lower language, and bilingual parents reported reading rate was higher than that of the monolinguals. Moreover, the contributors to this success in reading comprehension were different for the bilingual group, with oral language and home literacy playing a role. Overall, this suggests bilinguals are unique from monolinguals in the manner in which they make use of the resources available to them, linguistic and otherwise, to achieve reading comprehension success.

Abstract:The current study seeks to illustrate the relationships between child bilinguals' mother tongue language (MTL) exposure and reading activities at home, children's receptive MTL proficiency, and their socio-emotional and behavioral skills (SEBS). Data from 202 Singapore preschoolers (4-5 years old) who are learning English and Mandarin were analyzed. A parental questionnaire and standard Mandarin tests (i.e., receptive vocabulary, receptive grammar) were used to assess children's Mandarin language-literacy environment at home, as well as their receptive language skills in Mandarin. Children's SEBS were evaluated with the strengths and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ) (parental version). A series of variables which might influence SEBS and MTL proficiency (e.g., gender and SES) were controlled and SEMs were used to conduct data analysis. Results demonstrated that both Mandarin language and literacy environmental factors are related to children's receptive language outcomes in Mandarin, while only literacy environmental factors associate with children's difficulty level, and prosocial skills. This suggests that good parental support in bilingual children's MTL literacy should be promoted not only for the sake of their early language development but also because of the potential benefits to their social emotional wellbeing.
