Abstract:Metasurfaces offer a paradigm shift in the nonlinear optics, controlling and enhancing of nonlinear effects at the nanoscale, and offering new opportunities for applications in nonlinear optics, plasmonics and electromagnetics. Particularly, nonlinear optical conversion efficiency is limited due to the inherent losses in metallic materials. Nonlinear metasurfaces based on bound states in the continuum(BIC) can effectively increase the Q value and are expected to further enhance the nonlinear efficiency. In this paper, a tri-capacitance-like metasurface supporting both Friedrich–Wintgen quasi-BIC and symmetry-protected quasi-BIC is proposed to generates multiple high-Q resonances in the spectrum. The coupling between perfect BIC and quasi-BIC mode in the multi-channel optical system corresponds to the storage and release of electromagnetic waves, respectively. At the same time, the electromagnetic field is further enhanced at the resonant frequency, which can significantly improve the second order nonlinear efficiency. In addition, due to the different generation mechanism, the frequency and amplitude of the two resonances are easy to tune independently, which facilitates the sum and difference frequency generation (SFG and DFG). Therefore, the proposed nonlinear metasurfaces in this paper are of wide research value in the fields of nonlinear optics, multi-channel communication and memory.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have attracted a lot of attention in recent years due to the alternative methods they provide for the efficient wavefront control and engineering of resonant transmission. We discuss an approach that allows the effective control of the appearance of sharp Fano resonances in metasurfaces associated with the bound states in the continuum. We demonstrate that by breaking the symmetry transversely, in the direction perpendicular to a metasurface with a complex unit cell, we can control the number, frequency, and type of high-Q resonances originating from bound states in the continuum. As an example, we demonstrate experimentally the metasurfaces with magnetic dipole and toroidal dipole responses governed by the physics of multipolar bound states.

Abstract:Recently emerged dielectric resonators and metasurfaces offer a low-loss platform for efficient manipulation of electromagnetic waves from microwave to visible. Such flat meta-optics can focus electromagnetic waves, generate structured beams and vortices, enhance local fields for sensing as well as provide additional functionalities for advanced MRI machinery. Recent advances are associated with exotic optical modes called bound states in the continuum, which can give rise to extremely large quality factors and supercavity lasing. Here, we experimentally demonstrate subwavelength active supercavities with extremely high-Q resonances that could be reconfigured at an ultrafast time scale. We reveal that such supercavities enable all-optical switching and modulation of extremely sharp resonances, and thus could have numerous applications in lasing, mode multiplexing, and biosensing.

Abstract:Sharp electromagnetic resonances play an essential role in physics in general and optics in particular. The last decades have witnessed the successful developments of high-quality (Q) resonances in microcavities operating below the light line, which however is fundamentally challenging to access from free space. Alternatively, metasurface-based bound states in the continuum (BICs) offer a complementary solution of creating high-Q resonances in devices operating above the light line, yet the experimentally demonstrated Q factors under normal excitations are still limited. Here, we present the realizations of quasi-BIC under normal excitation with a record Q factor up to 18 511 by engineering the symmetry properties and the number of the unit cells in all-dielectric metasurface platforms. The high-Q quasi-BICs exhibit exceptionally high conversion efficiency for the third harmonic generation and even enable the second harmonic generation in Si metasurfaces. Such ultrasharp resonances achieved in this work may immediately boost the performances of BICs in a plethora of fundamental research and device applications, e.g., cavity QED, biosensing, nanolasing, and quantum light generations.
Bound state in the continuum and polarization-insensitive electric mirror in low-contrast metasurface

Abstract:High-contrast refractive indexes are pivotal in dielectric metasurfaces for inducing various exotic phenomena, such as the bound state in the continuum (BIC) and electric mirror (EM). However, the limitations of high-index materials are adverse to the practical applications, thus low-contrast metasurfaces with comparable performance are highly desired. Here we present a low-contrast dielectric metasurface comprising radially anisotropic cylinders, which are SiO2 cylinders doped with a small amount of WS2. The cylinder exhibits unidirectional forward superscattering originating from the overlapping of the electric and magnetic dipole resonances. When normal illumination by a near-infrared plane wave, the metasurface consisting of the superscattering constituents manifests a polarization-insensitive EM. Conversely, when subjected to an in-plane incoming wave, the metasurface generates a symmetry-protected BIC characterized by an ultrahigh Q factor and nearly negligible out-of-plane energy radiation. Our work highlights the doping approach as an efficient strategy for designing low-contrast functional metasurfaces and sheds new light on the potential applications in photonic integrated circuits and on-chip optical communication.

Abstract:Enhancing the light-matter interaction with high-Q bound states in the continuum has aroused great interest. In our paper, we present an all-dielectric metasurfaces in the realm of nonlinear optics, by harnessing the power of dual quasi-bound states in the continuum and surface lattice resonance to enhance second-harmonic generation on lithium niobate metasurfaces. It is demonstrated that the strong enhancement in conversion efficiency is up to 10,000 times of a lithium niobate film with equivalent thickness and approximately 100 times greater than that observed for bound states in the continuum within a wide spectral range in near-infrared band. The dynamic process of the modes was demonstrated by the multipole scattering theory. This breakthrough offers straightforward design principles for harmonic generation utilizing metasurfaces, which is highly advantageous for a range of applications, including efficient nonlinear optics, sensitive biosensing, and the generation of laser sources across the ultraviolet-visible spectrum.

Abstract:AbstractBound states in the continuum represent a captivating and significant phenomenon in the realms of photonics, materials science, and quantum mechanics. These exceptional resonant states have emerged as crucial elements in a diverse array of nanotechnology applications including chiral nanophotonics. Applying bound states in the continuum for chiral applications is a challenging problem and usually requires some additional complicated steps such as multi‐layer lithography, adding superstrate with index matching materials and geometry parameters adjusting. Nevertheless, creating a structure placed in inhomogeneous background that is capable to perfectly convert one circular polarization to the opposite one is still a challenging problem. This work presents chiral metasurface based on bound states in the continuum allowing to achieve perfect unitary circular conversion in an inhomogeneous environment. This approach is based on a coupling of two chiral but not perfect resonances which makes it possible to get one mode with chiral dichroism value of 1. A theoretical model is built, perform numerical calculation and conduct an experimental verification to prove this concept. The presented results could find many applications in sensing, optics, telecommunications, biomedical and chemical analysis.

Abstract:Extreme Nonreciprocity in Metasurfaces Based on Bound States in the Continuum In article 2301455, Luis Manuel Máñez‐Espina and co‐workers demonstrate theoretically and numerically the use of bound states in the continuum to enhance and control the magneto‐optical response in metasurfaces. The final device configuration leverages nonreciprocity and Huygens' condition to achieve nearly unity magnetic circular dichroism in a sub‐wavelength‐thin geometry. The developed phenomenological coupled‐mode theory model and the proposed resonance configuration provide a new strategy for designing thin optical devices with strong magneto‐optical properties.

Abstract:Nonreciprocal devices, including optical isolators, phase shifters, and amplifiers, are pivotal for advanced optical systems. However, exploiting natural materials is challenging due to their weak magneto-optical effects, requiring substantial thickness to construct effective optical devices. In this study, we demonstrate that subwavelength metasurfaces supporting bound states in the continuum and made of conventional magnetic ferrite can exhibit extreme nonreciprocity in the Faraday configuration and near-unity magnetic circular dichroism. These metasurfaces enhance the magneto-optical effect by 3--4 orders of magnitude compared to a continuous film of the same material. This significant enhancement is achieved by leveraging Huygens' condition in the metasurface whose structural units support paired electric and magnetic dipole resonances. We develop the multi-mode temporal coupled-mode theory for the observed enhancement of the magneto-optical effect and confirm our findings with the full-wave simulations.

Abstract:Confinement of light is very important to the field of optics, and it is theoretically possible to achieve the perfect confinement for optical modes located in the continuous domain radiation state. Achieving perfect confinement is possible for bound states in the continuum (BIC), which localize waves that lie in the continuous spectrum of the radiative state and remain in a perfect localized state. In this article, we propose a metasurface that consists of arrays of silicon nanoellipsoidal pairs and calculate its transmission spectra and energy bands. Based on an all-dielectric metasurface, a dielectric multilayer film is incorporated to improve the quality factor of the array composed of ellipsoidal table pairs by an order of magnitude. By breaking the symmetry of ellipsoidal table pairs, quasi-BIC resonance modes excited by electric quadrupole (EQ) and magnetic dipoles (MDs) are realized using asymmetric silicon nanoellipsoid surfaces, where the quasi-BIC modes have high ${Q}$ -factors. In this article, the relationship between the structural asymmetry of Fano resonance controlled by symmetry-protect BICs and the radiation ${Q}$ -factor is analyzed and demonstrated theoretically. At the same time, we use quasi-BIC resonances in asymmetric silicon nanoellipsoidal pairs of metasurfaces to achieve a huge Goos–Hänchen (GH) shift enhancement, which exceeds the third-order wavelength and a very large group index to achieve excellent slow-light effects. Our work is centered on the design of simulations for the BIC metasurface. Meanwhile, based on the simulation design results, we propose to advance the application of optical communication devices, BIC sensing, optical switches, and optical modulators.

Abstract:Resonant dielectric metasurfaces have been demonstrated to hold a great promise for manipulation of light-wave dispersion at the nanoscale due to their resonant photonic environment and high refractive index. However, the efficiency of devices based on dielectric nanostructures is usually limited by the quality (Q) factor of their resonant modes. The physics of the bound sates in the continuum (BICs) provide an elegant solution for control over the Q factor of resonant modes. Here, by engineering the substrate of Si-based metasurfaces, we demonstrate two eigenmodes that exhibit an intrinsic magnetic dipole character and have an infinite radiation lifetime. We reveal that they are characterized by in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic dipole modes and respectively correspond to two groups of BICs, that is, Fabry–Pérot BICs and symmetry-protected BICs. Using temporal coupled-mode theory and numerical simulations, we show that these BIC modes can transform into high-Q quasi-BIC resonances with near-unity absorption under normal incidence through tuning structural parameters. Our work provides a promising route to use BIC-inspired metasurfaces for designing ultra-narrowband absorbers which can be used as absorption filters, photodetectors, and sensors.

Abstract:The enhancement of electromagnetic field with high Q factor in metasurface has attracted extension attention. Magneto-optical metasurface (MOMS) provides approaches with controllable magnetic field to modulate optical response, which contribute to the magneto-optical Kerr effect in nanophotonic devices. However, it is a challenge for MOMS to obtain narrow spectra peak with high Q factor. Here we propose a MOMS supporting quasi bound states in the continuum (quasi-BIC) and theoretically investigate the evolution process from BIC to quasi-BIC. By applying external magnetic field, the BIC in our proposed metasurface can transform into quasi-BIC with finite Q factor up to 33620. Meanwhile, the quasi-BIC shows magnetization-related circular dichroism with a vortex point in polarization graph, based on time-reversal symmetry breaking in magneto-optical material under condition of external magnetic field. The quasi-BIC also keeps nearly unity reflection and almost zero absorption, which shows promising future in sensing. Our results enrich the light control mechanisms of MOMS, and provide a unique opportunity for applications requiring flexible tunability and high Q factors, such as sensor, laser source, filter and chiral-related elements.

Abstract:The study of resonant dielectric nanostructures with a high refractive index is a new research direction in the nanoscale optics and metamaterial-inspired nanophotonics. Because of the unique optically induced electric and magnetic Mie resonances, high-index nanoscale structures are expected to complement or even replace different plasmonic components in a range of potential applications. We study a strong coupling between modes of a single subwavelength high-index dielectric resonator and analyze the mode transformation and Fano resonances when the resonator’s aspect ratio varies. We demonstrate that strong mode coupling results in resonances with high-quality factors, which are related to the physics of bound states in the continuum when the radiative losses are almost suppressed due to the Friedrich–Wintgen scenario of destructive interference. We explain the physics of these states in terms of multipole decomposition, and show that their appearance is accompanied by a drastic change in the far-field radiation pattern. We reveal a fundamental link between the formation of the high-quality resonances and peculiarities of the Fano parameter in the scattering cross-section spectra. Our theoretical findings are confirmed by microwave experiments for the scattering of high-index cylindrical resonators with a tunable aspect ratio. The proposed mechanism of the strong mode coupling in single subwavelength high-index resonators accompanied by resonances with high-quality factors helps to extend substantially functionalities of all-dielectric nanophotonics, which opens horizons for active and passive nanoscale metadevices.

Abstract:The realization of high-Q resonances in a silicon metasurface with various broken-symmetry blocks is reported. Theoretical analysis reveals that the sharp resonances in the metasurfaces originate from symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum (BIC) and the magnetic dipole dominates these peculiar states. A smaller size of the defect in the broken-symmetry block gives rise to the resonance with a larger Q factor. Importantly, this relationship can be tuned by changing the structural parameter, resulting from the modulation of the topological configuration of BICs. Consequently, a Q factor of more than 3,000 can be easily achieved by optimizing dimensions of the nanostructure. At this sharp resonance, the intensity of the third harmonic generation signal in the patterned structure can be 368 times larger than that of the flat silicon film. The proposed strategy and underlying theory can open up new avenues to realize ultrasharp resonances, which may promote the development of the potential meta-devices for nonlinearity, lasing action, and sensing.

Abstract:The extraordinary emergence of all-dielectric resonant meta-photonics underpinned by high refractive index and low optical loss materials promises a standout platform for unprecedented manipulation and subwavelength control of light. Recent significant breakthroughs in meta-photonics have to do with the exploration of the non-radiative eigenmodes that lie inside the light cone, called the bound states in the continuum (BICs), which have demonstrated considerable potential to achieve high quality (Q) factors but require ultra-small structure asymmetry, complicating fabrication and hindering precise control of Q factors. Here, we propose a scheme to excite quasi-BICs by breaking symmetry in the permittivity of the comprising meta-atoms where small permittivity perturbation renders the same effect in the conventional geometrically asymmetric design. Empowered by the insignificant permittivity perturbation introduced from chemical doping and carrier injection, arbitrarily small permittivity asymmetry, that is, infinitely high-Q factor, can be precisely and dynamically tailored. As an example of application, we numerically show the THz range, exceptionally high conversion efficiency for both third-harmonic and fifth-harmonic generation from the permittivity-broken metasurface (MS) benefiting from the extreme field confinement at high-Q quasi-BICs resonance. Our results present a feasible and efficient strategy to mitigate the shortcomings of previous photonic platform and shall shed light on the advances of nonlinear all-dielectric THz-MS.

Abstract:All-dielectric resonant metasurfaces are expected to boost Mie resonances with high Q-factors and enhanced electromagnetic fields owing to their large mode volumes and low material losses. However, the toroidal dipole (TD) and magnetic dipole (MD) are usually suppressed by other stronger multipoles due to their relatively weak coupling to the incident lights. In this work, the double resonances of TD and MD quasi-bound state in the continuum (quasi-BIC) are excited asymmetrically by breaking the geometric symmetry in an all-dielectric metasurface consisting of arrays of silicon I-bars and silicon Φ-disks, leading to their corresponding enhanced electric field confinements and high Q-factors. The sensing performances by these two resonances are investigated as well, achieving refractive index sensitivities of 784.8 nm/RIU and 630 nm/RIU, respectively. This work suggests a route to manipulate strong TD and MD quasi-BIC excitations and facilitates their practical applications such as nonlinear light sources and sensing.

Abstract:Optical bound states in the continuum (BICs) underpin the existence of strongly localized waves embedded into the radiation spectrum. Here we bring the concept of BICs to the field of high-harmonic generation and employ resonant dielectric metasurfaces to generate efficiently optical harmonics up to the 11th order. We design BIC-resonant metasurfaces with a broken in-plane symmetry for the lower harmonics and then observe a transition to the nonlinear regime for higher harmonics. Our approach bridges the fields of perturbative and nonperturbative nonlinear optics on the subwavelength scale.

Abstract:Nonlocal metasurfaces, which support a collective mode, can be applied to manipulate the wavefront within the narrow band spectrum and do not operate other wavelengths. However, once fabricated, the tunability of those meta-devices is still a challenge. Here, we demonstrated a switchable all-dielectric nonlocal metasurface based on quasi-bound states in the continuum controlled by symmetry breaking. This device realizes the spatial light beam manipulation in the narrow band with switchable resonant wavelengths in different environment dielectric. We designed a nonlocal metasurface for beam focusing with a tunable wavelength in the communication band. We also designed a nonlocal metasurface for the generation of non-diffraction Airy beams with tunable wavelength. These results will have potential applications in see-through display, large-capacity optical communications, nonlinear optics and imaging.

Abstract:We present nonlinear optical four-wave mixing in a silicon nanodisk dimer metasurface. Under the oblique incident plane waves, the designed metasurface exhibits a multiresonant feature with simultaneous excitations of three quasi-bound states in the continuum (BIC). Through employing these quasi-BICs with maximizing electric field energy at the input bump wavelengths, significant enhancement of third-order nonlinear processes including third-harmonic generation, degenerate and nondegenerate four-wave mixing are demonstrated, giving rise to ten frequencies in the visible wavelengths.
