Abstract:Semantic human body reshaping builds a 3D body according to several anthropometric measurements, playing important roles in virtual fitting and human body design. We propose a novel part-based semantic body model for 3D body reshaping. We adopt 20 types of measurements in regard of length and girth information of body shape. Our approach takes any number (1–20) of measurements as input, and generates a 3D human body. Firstly, all missing measurements are estimated from known measurements using a correlation-based method. Then, based on our proposed semantic model, we learn corresponding semantic body parameters which determine a 3D body from measurements. Our model is trained using a database of 4000 registered body meshes which are fitted with scans of real human bodies. Through experiments, we compare our approach with previous methods and show the advantages of our model.
Symmetry-Aware Semantic Segmentation of a 3D Human Body Model

Abstract:An automatic segmentation method for a 3D human model is proposed for the symmetry-aware semantic segmentation. Firstly, a symmetry-aware kinematic skeleton is extracted from the input human body model via template skeleton embedding. Secondly, the number of the segments is determined by the kinematic skeleton; some key points corresponding to the segments are extracted meanwhile. Thirdly, while taking the key points as the boundary constraints, the harmonic fields are constructed to obtain a set of isolines as the potential cutting boundaries. Finally, the key points are taken as the clustering centers to conduct a spectral clustering operation, which guides the selections of the cutting boundaries. In this way, the semantic information in the kinematic skeleton can be directly transferred to the segments, and the number of segments can be controlled by the structure of the kinematic skeleton. Results on the SCAPE dataset, the MPI-FAUST dataset and the Princeton Segmentation Benchmark show that the proposed method can automatically achieve symmetry-aware semantic segmentation, and is robust to the shape and the pose of the human body model.

Abstract:It remains challenging how to acquire a human body shape with high precision and evaluate the reconstructed models effectively, because the results can be easily affected by various factors (e.g., the performance of the capture device, the unwanted movement of the subject, and the self-occlusion of the articulated body structure). To tackle the above challenges, this research presents a passive acquisition system, which comprises 60 spatially-configured Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras and a carefully devised algorithmic pipeline for shape acquisition in a single shot. Different from traditional multi-view stereo solutions, the constituent cameras are synchronized and organized into 30 binocular stereo rigs to capture images from multiple views simultaneously. Each binocular stereo rig is regarded as a depth sensor. The acquisition pipeline consists of three stages. First, camera calibration is performed to estimate intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of all cameras, especially for paired binocular cameras. Second, depth inference based on stereo matching is employed to recover reliable depth information from RGB images. A novel hierarchical seed-propagation stereo matching framework is proposed, resulting in 30 dense and uniform-distributed partial point clouds. Finally, a point-based geometry processing step composed of multi-view registration and surface meshing is carried out to obtain high-quality watertight human body shapes. This research also proposes an elaborate and novel method to assess the accuracy of reconstructed non-rigid human body model based on anthropometry parameters, which solves the synchronization of the ground-truth values and the measured values. Abstract:Purpose Currently, a common method of reconstructing mannequin is based on the body measurements or body features, which only preserve the body size lacking of the accurate body geometric shape information. However, the same human body measurement does not equal to the same body shape. This may result in an unfit garment for the target human body. The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel scanning-based pipeline to reconstruct the personalized mannequin, which preserves both body size and body shape information. Design/methodology/approach The authors first capture the body of a subject via 3D scanning, and a statistical body model is fit to the scanned data. This results in a skinned articulated model of the subject. The scanned body is then adjusted to be pose-symmetric via linear blending skinning. The mannequin part is then extracted. Finally, a slice-based method is proposed to generate a shape-symmetric 3D mannequin. Findings A personalized 3D mannequin can be reconstructed from the scanned body. Compared to conventional methods, the method can preserve both the size and shape of the original scanned body. The reconstructed mannequin can be imported directly into the apparel CAD software. The proposed method provides a step for digitizing the apparel manufacturing. Originality/value Compared to the conventional methods, the main advantage of the authors’ system is that the authors can preserve both size and geometry of the original scanned body. The main contributions of this paper are as follows: decompose the process of the mannequin reconstruction into pose symmetry and shape symmetry; propose a novel scanning-based pipeline to reconstruct a 3D personalized mannequin; and present a slice-based method for the symmetrization of the 3D mesh.

Abstract:Estimation of 3D body shapes from dressed-human photos is an important but challenging problem in virtual fitting. We propose a novel automatic framework to efficiently estimate 3D body shapes under clothes. We construct a database of 3D naked and dressed body pairs, based on which we learn how to predict 3D positions of body landmarks (which further constrain a parametric human body model) automatically according to dressed-human silhouettes. Critical vertices are selected on 3D registered human bodies as landmarks to represent body shapes, so as to avoid the time-consuming vertices correspondences finding process for parametric body reconstruction. Our method can estimate 3D body shapes from dressed-human silhouettes within 4 seconds, while the fastest method reported previously need 1 minute. In addition, our estimation error is within the size tolerance for clothing industry. We dress 6042 naked bodies with 3 sets of common clothes by physically based cloth simulation technique. To the best of our knowledge, We are the first to construct such a database containing 3D naked and dressed body pairs and our database may contribute to the areas of human body shapes estimation and cloth simulation.

Abstract:This paper proposes a passive multi‐view system for human body shape reconstruction, namely RHF‐Human, to overcome several challenges including accurate calibration and stereo matching in self‐occluded and low‐texture skin regions. The reconstruction process includes four steps: capture, multi‐view camera calibration, dense reconstruction, and meshing. The capture system, which consists of 90 digital single‐lens reflex cameras, is single‐shot to avoid nonrigid deformation of the human body. Two technical contributions are made: (1) a two‐step robust multi‐view calibration approach that improves calibration accuracy and saves calibration time for each new human body acquired and (2) an accurate PatchMatch multi‐view stereo method for dense reconstruction to perform correct matching in self‐occluded and low‐texture skin regions and to reduce the noise caused by body hair. Experiments on models of various genders, poses, and skin with different amounts of body hair show the robustness of the proposed system. A high‐fidelity human body shape dataset with 227 models is constructed, and the average accuracy is within 1.5 mm. The system provides a new scheme for the accurate reconstruction of nonrigid human models based on passive vision and has good potential in fashion design and health care.

Abstract:This research proposes a novel adjustable algorithm for reconstructing 3D body shapes from front and side silhouettes. Most recent silhouette-based approaches use a deep neural network trained by silhouettes and key points to estimate the shape parameters but cannot accurately fit the model to the body contours and consequently are struggling to cover detailed body geometry, especially in the torso. In addition, in most of these cases, body parts have the same accuracy priority, making the optimization harder and avoiding reaching the optimum possible result in essential body parts, like the torso, which is visually important in most applications, such as virtual garment fitting. In the proposed method, the expected accuracy for each body part can be adjusted based on the purpose by assigning coefficients for the distance of each body part between the projected 3D body and 2D silhouettes. To measure this distance, the correspondent body parts are first recognized using body segmentation in both views. Individual body parts are aligned by 2D rigid registration and matched using pairwise matching. The objective function tries to minimize the distance cost for the individual body parts in both views based on distances and coefficients by optimizing the statistical model parameters. The slight variation in the degree of arms and limbs is also handled by matching the pose. The proposed method was evaluated with images of synthetic and real body meshes. The result shows that the algorithm accurately reconstructs visually important body parts with high coefficients.

Parametric Human Shape Reconstruction Via Bidirectional Silhouette Guidance

Abstract:We present a method to reconstruct the body geometry of a person by aligning the skinned multi-person linear (SMPL) model to an unconstrained human image. In contrast to previous methods that regress the model parameters from a shared image feature, we decouple the regression of pose and shape parameters in two sub-networks so that we can use different backbone architectures to extract better and more specific features for each regression task while allowing the two sub-networks to work together by our final training loss. We have further proposed a novel bidirectional silhouette constraint to restrict the estimated body geometry. The silhouette constraint is weighted adaptively according to the accuracy of pose estimation in order to handle truncations, occlusions and complex human poses. Experimental results on Human3.6M and UP datasets show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods and fits the body segmentation better, especially under extreme human pose conditions.

Abstract:3D representation and reconstruction of human bodies have been studied for a long time in computer vision. Traditional methods rely mostly on parametric statistical linear models, limiting the space of possible bodies to linear combinations. It is only recently that some approaches try to leverage neural implicit representations for human body modeling, and while demonstrating impressive results, they are either limited by representation capability or not physically meaningful and controllable. In this work, we propose a novel neural implicit representation for the human body, which is fully differentiable and optimizable with disentangled shape and pose latent spaces. Contrary to prior work, our representation is designed based on the kinematic model, which makes the representation controllable for tasks like pose animation, while simultaneously allowing the optimization of shape and pose for tasks like 3D fitting and pose tracking. Our model can be trained and fine-tuned directly on non-watertight raw data with well-designed losses. Experiments demonstrate the improved 3D reconstruction performance over SoTA approaches and show the applicability of our method to shape interpolation, model fitting, pose tracking, and motion retargeting.

Abstract:Reshaping accurate and realistic 3D human bodies from anthropometric parameters (e.g., height, chest size, etc.) poses a fundamental challenge for person identification, online shopping and virtual reality. Existing approaches for creating such 3D shapes often suffer from complex measurement by range cameras or high-end scanners, which either involve heavy expense cost or result in low quality. However, these high-quality equipments limit existing approaches in real applications, because the equipments are not easily accessible for common users. In this paper, we have designed a 3D human body reshaping system by proposing a novel feature-selection-based local mapping technique, which enables automatic anthropometric parameter modeling for each body facet. Note that the proposed approach can leverage limited anthropometric parameters (i.e., 3-5 measurements) as input, which avoids complex measurement, and thus better user-friendly experience can be achieved in real scenarios. Specifically, the proposed reshaping model consists of three steps. First, we calculate full-body anthropometric parameters from limited user inputs by imputation technique, and thus essential anthropometric parameters for 3D body reshaping can be obtained. Second, we select the most relevant anthropometric parameters for each facet by adopting relevance masks, which are learned offline by the proposed local mapping technique. Third, we generate the 3D body meshes by mapping matrices, which are learned by linear regression from the selected parameters to mesh-based body representation. We conduct experiments by anthropomorphic evaluation and a user study from 68 volunteers. Experiments show the superior results of the proposed system in terms of mean reconstruction error against the state-of-the-art approaches.

Abstract:Recent advances in consumer depth sensors have created many opportunities for human body measurement and modeling. Estimation of 3D body shape is particularly useful for fashion e-commerce applications such as virtual try-on or fit personalization. In this paper, we propose a method for capturing accurate human body shape and anthropometrics from a single consumer grade depth sensor. We first generate a large dataset of synthetic 3D human body models using real-world body size distributions. Next, we estimate key body measurements from a single monocular depth image. We combine body measurement estimates with local geometry features around key joint positions to form a robust multi-dimensional feature vector. This allows us to conduct a fast nearest-neighbor search to every sample in the dataset and return the closest one. Compared to existing methods, our approach is able to predict accurate full body parameters from a partial view using measurement parameters learned from the synthetic dataset. Furthermore, our system is capable of generating 3D human mesh models in real-time, which is significantly faster than methods which attempt to model shape and pose deformations. To validate the efficiency and applicability of our system, we collected a dataset that contains frontal and back scans of 83 clothed people with ground truth height and weight. Experiments on real-world dataset show that the proposed method can achieve real-time performance with competing results achieving an average error of 1.9 cm in estimated measurements.

Abstract:Objective: A digital twin of a patient can be a valuable tool for enhancing clinical tasks such as workflow automation, patient-specific X-ray dose optimization, markerless tracking, positioning, and navigation assistance in image-guided interventions. However, it is crucial that the patient's surface and internal organs are of high quality for any pose and shape estimates. At present, the majority of statistical shape models (SSMs) are restricted to a small number of organs or bones or do not adequately represent the general population. Method: To address this, we propose a deformable human shape and pose model that combines skin, internal organs, and bones, learned from CT images. By modeling the statistical variations in a pose-normalized space using probabilistic PCA while also preserving joint kinematics, our approach offers a holistic representation of the body that can benefit various medical applications. Results: We assessed our model's performance on a registered dataset, utilizing the unified shape space, and noted an average error of 3.6 mm for bones and 8.8 mm for organs. To further verify our findings, we conducted additional tests on publicly available datasets with multi-part segmentations, which confirmed the effectiveness of our model. Conclusion: This works shows that anatomically parameterized statistical shape models can be created accurately and in a computationally efficient manner. Significance: The proposed approach enables the construction of shape models that can be directly applied to various medical applications, including biomechanics and reconstruction.

Abstract:This article presents a methodology for realistic human shape reconstruction from 2D images. The methodology involves adapting a state-of-the-art 3D human reshaping model and validating it on second the Anthropometric Survey of US Army Personnel (ANSUR II) data. A benchmark database of over 12,000 full-body silhouettes linked to a set of 21 body measurements was generated and used to train and test a deep-learning model to extract measurement information from a set of two images. A concatenated Convolutional Neural Network and Multilayer Perceptron model is trained to extract measurement information from two images while taking into account numerical inputs as constraints. Image augmentation is also used to improve accuracy and achieve generality. The results demonstrate that the proposed method is reliable and efficient, with most reconstructions achieving mean accuracy scores above 98%. Additionally, the body measurements extractor achieved a mean accuracy score of 97% for both male and female subjects. Overall, this methodology has significant potential for a range of applications, including the development of virtual try-on systems, personalized apparel design, and medical imaging technologies.

Abstract:In this paper, an automatic method is proposed to generate a symmetry-aware kinematic skeleton for a human body model with an arbitrary pose and orientation. First, a template kinematic skeleton with semantics is embedded into the input human body model. Then, the joints of the embedded kinematic skeleton are refined according to the geometry of the human body model and some prior knowledge. Finally, a specific local coordinate system is defined on the kinematic skeleton and is used to distinguish the symmetry of the kinematic skeleton. In this way, the symmetric joints of the kinematic skeleton, e.g., the left knee joint and the right knee joint, can be distinguished. Quantitative and qualitative analysis and comparison show that the proposed method can generate a symmetry-aware kinematic skeleton with accurate joints and has no restrictions on the pose and orientation of the input human body model. Moreover, this paper presents validation of the proposed method in many applications, such as shape alignment, shape deformation, shape co-segmentation and shape correspondence.
Accurate 3D Body Shape Regression using Metric and Semantic Attributes

Abstract:While methods that regress 3D human meshes from images have progressed rapidly, the estimated body shapes often do not capture the true human shape. This is problematic since, for many applications, accurate body shape is as important as pose. The key reason that body shape accuracy lags pose accuracy is the lack of data. While humans can label 2D joints, and these constrain 3D pose, it is not so easy to "label" 3D body shape. Since paired data with images and 3D body shape are rare, we exploit two sources of information: (1) we collect internet images of diverse "fashion" models together with a small set of anthropometric measurements; (2) we collect linguistic shape attributes for a wide range of 3D body meshes and the model images. Taken together, these datasets provide sufficient constraints to infer dense 3D shape. We exploit the anthropometric measurements and linguistic shape attributes in several novel ways to train a neural network, called SHAPY, that regresses 3D human pose and shape from an RGB image. We evaluate SHAPY on public benchmarks, but note that they either lack significant body shape variation, ground-truth shape, or clothing variation. Thus, we collect a new dataset for evaluating 3D human shape estimation, called HBW, containing photos of "Human Bodies in the Wild" for which we have ground-truth 3D body scans. On this new benchmark, SHAPY significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods on the task of 3D body shape estimation. This is the first demonstration that 3D body shape regression from images can be trained from easy-to-obtain anthropometric measurements and linguistic shape attributes. Probabilistic Estimation of 3D Human Shape and Pose with a Semantic Local Parametric Model

Abstract:This paper addresses the problem of 3D human body shape and pose estimation from RGB images. Some recent approaches to this task predict probability distributions over human body model parameters conditioned on the input images. This is motivated by the ill-posed nature of the problem wherein multiple 3D reconstructions may match the image evidence, particularly when some parts of the body are locally occluded. However, body shape parameters in widely-used body models (e.g. SMPL) control global deformations over the whole body surface. Distributions over these global shape parameters are unable to meaningfully capture uncertainty in shape estimates associated with locally-occluded body parts. In contrast, we present a method that (i) predicts distributions over local body shape in the form of semantic body measurements and (ii) uses a linear mapping to transform a local distribution over body measurements to a global distribution over SMPL shape parameters. We show that our method outperforms the current state-of-the-art in terms of identity-dependent body shape estimation accuracy on the SSP-3D dataset, and a private dataset of tape-measured humans, by probabilistically-combining local body measurement distributions predicted from multiple images of a subject.

Abstract:Estimating the body shape and posture of a dressed human subject in motion represented as a sequence of (possibly incomplete) 3D meshes is important for virtual change rooms and security. To solve this problem, statistical shape spaces encoding human body shape and posture variations are commonly used to constrain the search space for the shape estimate. In this work, we propose a novel method that uses a posture-invariant shape space to model body shape variation combined with a skeleton-based deformation to model posture variation. Our method can estimate the body shape and posture of both static scans and motion sequences of dressed human body scans. In case of motion sequences, our method takes advantage of motion cues to solve for a single body shape estimate along with a sequence of posture estimates. We apply our approach to both static scans and motion sequences and demonstrate that using our method, higher fitting accuracy is achieved than when using a variant of the popular SCAPE model as statistical model.

Abstract:This paper focused on extracting effective human shape and pose information from solely joint annotations. With few training datasets and without using SMPL annotations from MoSh, we proposed a method based on alternating successive convex approximation (ASCA) to estimate the 3D human shape and pose. Previous methods tended to utilize a large number of mixed 2D and 3D datasets for training. These methods extract shape and pose information from SMPL annotations containing ground-truth shape and pose annotations. It is challenging to learn useful information of human shape and pose from solely joint annotations independently because 2D and 3D joint positions can be expressed as a non-convex function of coupled SMPL shape and pose parameters. The proposed method decouples the function into joint-shape and joint-pose functions making the training focus on shape and pose separately during each procedure. A minimum number of datasets are used to train the proposed method (InstaVariety and MPI-INF-3DHP) compare to previous methods. We make a comparison with other methods that have been trained with SMPL annotations. The result shows that the proposed method is competitive with other algorithms trained with additional SMPL annotations. What is more, when ground-truth SMPL annotations exist, ASAC can equally extract useful shape and pose information from image sequences. The result trained with a 3DPW training set outperforms most current video-based algorithms.

Abstract:In this paper we present a novel volumetric shape from silhouette (SfS) algorithm based on a centripetal pentahedron model (pent-model). The pent-model is an object-centered volumetric model composed of a set of pentahedrons cut from the centripetal triangular pyramids, which together partition the 3D space. The SfS algorithm first computes the pyramids by constructing a geodesic sphere. These pyramids are then projected onto the image planes of all cameras. The intersections between the projected pyramids and the silhouettes, which are a set of hexagons, are computed. This process can be performed very efficiently with pre-computed polar silhouette graphs (PSGs) and reduced PSGs. The hexagons are then back-projected into the 3D space, where the intersections are calculated and the pent-model is derived. After that, a mesh surface model can be extracted by marching pentahedrons. Our algorithm has the combined advantages of robustness, speediness and preciseness. Experimental results based on both synthetic images and real photos are presented.
