Abstract:In this work, we report an orthogonal preparation of polyvinyl-block-polyester copolymers in a onepot and single step strategy via a well-defined beta-diiminate zinc ((BDI)Zn) catalyst under light irradiation. The zinc compound is specially designed to possess 2-bromoisobutyrate initiating group, which combines the capabilities of ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactones and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of vinyl monomers. Under light, simultaneous chain propagations via a coordinated insertion of cyclic esters from Znoxygen bond and organocatalyzed-ATRP of vinyl monomers from the omega-bromoisobutyrate take place simultaneously, thus providing an extremely efficient route to block copolymers composed of polyester and polyvinyl in single step. The structure of the catalyst is established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, H-1- and C-13-NMR. A wide range of polyvinyl-block-polyester copolymers including polystyrene-block-polylactide (PS-b-PLA), poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-PLA (PMMA-b-PLA) and PS-b-polycaprolactone (PS-b-PCL) with controlled molecular weight and compositions are efficiently constructed. These block copolymers display monomodal and moderate molecular weight distributions (M-w/M-n<1.5), and are fully characterized by DSC, H-1-NMR, and C-13-NMR spectroscopy. The catalyst and synthetic strategy mentioned above offer an extremely convenient catalytic access to polyvinyl/polyester block copolymers for the formation of attractive nanomaterials.

Abstract:Construction of block copolymers is a practical method for modifying the properties of CO2-based polycarbonates (CO2-PCs) in order to meet specific needs. Herein, we report a well-defined single-site beta-diiminate zinc complex 1 equipped with the capacities of coordination copolymerization of CO2/epoxide and reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of vinyl monomers. Complex 1 is specifically designed to possess a 3-(benzylthiocarbonothioylthio)propionate (BSTP) initiating group, which enables the controlled ring-opening copolymerization of epoxides and CO2, leaving a polycarbonate with BSTP functional group at the end of the chain. The end-capped BSTP allows direct chain extension via living RAFT polymerization, thus providing a robust construct various CO2-based block copolymers in one pot via a tandem catalysis strategy. The structure of 1 is established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction as well as H-1 and C-13 NMR By utilizing 1, a wide range of CO2-based block copolymers including poly(cyclohexene carbonate)-block-poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PCHC-b-PDMAEMA), poly(cyclohexene carbonate)-block-polystyrene (PCHC-b-PS), and poly(cyclohexene carbonate)-block-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PCHC-bPNIPAM) with controlled molecular weight and compositions are prepared. These block copolymers are fully characterized by DSC, H-1 NMR, and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. Especially, a thermoresponsive PCHC-b-PNIPAM copolymer is for the first time synthesized as a functional nanomaterial. The complex and catalytic process provided here offers a straightforward catalytic access to CO2-based block copolymers.

Abstract:Selective transformation of carbon dioxide and epoxides into degradable polycarbonates (CO2-based copolymer) has been regarded as a most promising green polymerization process. Although tremendous progress has been made during the past decade, very few successful examples have been reported to synthesize well-defined block copolymers to expand the scope of these green copolymers. Herein, we report a tandem strategy combining two living polymerization techniques, salenCo(III)X-catalyzed styrene oxide SO/CO2 copolymerization and ring-opening polymerization of lactide with DBU (1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene), for the synthesis of poly(styrene carbonate-block-lactide) copolymers. The key to the success of this tandem strategy is the judicious choice of water as the chain transfer and/or chain terminator reagent, which is added at the end of the salenCo(III)X-catalyzed SO/CO2 copolymerization to in situ generate hydroxyl groups at the end of the polymer chains. The resulting polycarbonates with -OH end groups can thus be directly used as macroinitiators to subsequently initiate ring opening polymerization of lac-fide to synthesize the diblock copolymers. Because of the living polymerization nature of both steps in this tandem strategy, we have demonstrated that the diblock copolymers synthesized possess well-defined structures with narrow molecular weight distributions and controllable lengths of both styrene carbonate and lactide blocks.
Novel cationic poly(ester-co-carbonate) materials functionalized with tertiary amine groups

Abstract:The current study aimed at designing cationic and biodegradable biomaterials with improved biological functionality. We report the enzymatic synthesis, characterization and preliminary biological assessment of a series of novel functionalized poly(ester-co-carbonate)s, namely [poly(ADMC-co-CL)]s containing tertiary amine groups in the backbone. The copolymer compositions agreed very well with the feed ratios of co-monomers, indicating the excellent controllability of the preparation method. Static contact angle measurement revealed that the hydrophilicity of copolymers can be tailored and gradually increased with an increasing ADMC content in copolymers. With respect to the weight loss, in vitro degradation tests demonstrated the occurrence of lipase-dependent degradation. Copolymers with a higher ADMC content degraded far faster as well. Cell proliferation tests suggested that the incorporation of ADMC in copolymers would considerably promote cell adhesion and proliferation on the polymer surface, indicative of good biocompatibility. As a demonstration of a potential application, poly(ADMC-co-CL) microspheres were fabricated in an attempt to construct a controlled delivery system for the drug ibuprofen. The sustained release of ibuprofen loaded in the copolymers was found to have an evident acceleration in acidic conditions, indicating the pH dependence of such release behavior.
Synthesis, characterization and in vitro degradation of a new family of alternate poly(ester-anhydrides) based on aliphatic and aromatic diacids

Abstract:A new family of alternate poly(ester-anhydrides) containing aliphatic and aromatic diacids were synthesized. The dicarboxylic acids were obtained by derivatization of p-hydroxy benzoic acid at the hydroxy terminus with cyclic anhydride (adipic anhydride and succinic anhydride) and subsequently polymerized via the corresponding mixed anhydrides by melt polycondensation. DSC traces revealed that the polymers had low Tg (<40°C) and no crystallinity. The static contact angle measurements indicated that the poly(ester-anhydrides) were more hydrophobic than poly(d,l-lactide) and poly(adipic anhydride). In vitro degradation of the polymers was also investigated in pH 7.4 PBS at 37°C. It was found that degradation rate of the poly(ester-anhydrides) increased with p-carboxy phenyl adipic monoester (CPA) content in the polymers and the degradation duration could be adjusted from ca. 20 days to ca. 2 months. Erosion curve of poly(p-carboxy phenyl adipic monoester anhydride) (PCPA) was characterized by a linear region of weight loss at nearly constant rate in the first 7 days (ca. 80% of weight loss) followed by a gradual decrease region. IR and SEM analysis showed that significant erosion of PCPA occurred in the outer layer and no apparent erosion could be seen in the inner layer of the degrading sample after 7-day degradation. The poly(ester-anhydrides) may be used as either anti-infective polymeric prodrugs or matrices for drug delivery.

Abstract:Functionalized aliphatic polyesters attract increasing attentions as biocompatible and biodegradable polymers with broad applications in biological science. In this contribution, we propose a facile and controllable synthetic technique for functional poly(ε- caprolactone) (PCL) via Janus polymerization, which comprises cationic ring-opening copolymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone (CL) with 3,3-bis(chloromethyl) oxacyclobutane (CO) and (coordinated) anionic ROP of CL at a single propagating chain by rare earth metal triflates (RE(OTf)3) and propylene oxide, thus generating block copolymers in one step. The compositions of the copolymers of poly(CLb-( CL-r-CO)) can be modulated by various RE(OTf)3. Scandium triflate catalyzes Janus polymerization to yield the copolymers containing the highest CO contents among all the RE(OTf)3 catalysts used with complete conversion of CL. The chlorine in CO repeating units is ready to be transferred into azide group which affords the modification sites to react with 9-ethynyl-9-fluorenol and mPEG-alkyne, respectively, via copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction with quantitative conversions of azides, as confirmed by FTIR analyses. According to NMR and SEC analyses, copolymers (PCC-g-PEG) bearing a homo-PCL block and a PEG-grafted block of poly(CO-co-CL) demonstrate well-defined chemical structures. The investigations on thermal properties reveal the strong phase separation between PCL and PEG blocks. The amphiphilic PCC-g-PEG is able to self-assemble into micelles in aqueous solution while cylindrical and lamellar morphologies are observed in bulk. We provide an efficient protocol to synthesize functional PCL combining onestep Janus polymerization and precise post-polymerization click reaction.

Abstract:Polycarbonates with pendant functional groups have attracted much attention due to their capability for further chemical modification and post-polymerization. This work describes the synthesis of a poly(carbonate-co-ether) with massive pendant acrylate groups from the copolymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) with carbon dioxide (CO2), using a nanolamellar zinc-cobalt double metal cyanide complex (Zn-Co(III) DMCC) catalyst. The carbonate linkage content (FCO2) of the poly(carbonate-coether) could be varied from 42.2 to 68.0% by changing the polymerization conditions. Of importance, 4-methoxyphenol was applied for regulating the copolymerization. It could not only act as an inhibitor for completely depressing the self-polymerization of GMA via free radical polymerization of the double bond, but also modulate the molecular weight of the resultant copolymers. The obtained copolymer had two terminal hydroxyl groups, which were confirmed by the electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) technique. A new thermoset with high glass transition temperature (T-g: 105 or 120 degrees C) and massive carbonate units as well as hydroxyl (or carboxylic) groups was prepared by the curing reaction of the GMA-CO2 copolymer with allyl alcohol or acrylic acid in the presence of 2,20azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN).

Abstract:Glutamic acid/glycolic acid-based biodegradable polymers have been prepared by ring-opening polymerization of (3S)-3-[(benzylcarbonyl)ethylene] morpholine-2,5-dione, and the copolymerization of the morpholine-2,5-dione derivative and lactide. The homopolymerization and copolymerization were carried out in bulk at 140 degreesC with SnOct(2) as a catalyst to give the corresponding protected poly(Glc-alt-Glu) and protected poly[LA-co(Glc-alt-Glu)], respectively. After removal of the protective group by catalytic hydrogenation with Pd/C(5%) as a catalyst, poly(Glc-alt-Glu) and poly [LA-co-(Glc-alt-Glu)] showed excellent hydrophilicity.
Short Poly(ethylene Glycol) Block Initiation of Poly(l‐lactide) Di‐block Copolymers: a Strategy for Tuning the Degradation of Resorbable Devices

Abstract:The current range of medical applications of resorbable polyesters could be hugely expanded if more effective strategies for tailoring degradation rate were available. Block copolymerisation with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) has been shown to reduce degradation times; however, to date, this has relied on the addition of PEG to short lengths of polyester. This results in copolymers with high fractions of PEG and low molecular weights, reducing the potential range of applications. Furthermore, there has been no systematic study of the relative lengths of the blocks. In this work, we employed short hydroxyl-functionalised methoxy-terminated mPEG to initiate the synthesis of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA), resulting in controlled di-block copolymers with short mPEG blocks and long PLLA blocks. A controlled series of polymers was made with PLLA lengths (60 < M-n (kg mol(-1)) < 200) and mPEG lengths (550 < M-n (g mol(-1)) < 5000) giving very low mPEG content (0.1-1.5 wt%). We found that, despite the low fraction of mPEG, water uptake and the rate of hydrolytic degradation, k, increased. Significantly, k for the polymers was dependent only on the presence of mPEG, and was little affected by mPEG length or PLLA length in the ranges studied. Moreover, mass loss began in all polymers when Mn of the polymer fell below a threshold of about 20 kg mol(-1) and depended on both the initial molecular weight of PLLA and the presence (but not the length) of mPEG. Short-chain mPEG therefore provides a new route for targeted, temporal control of resorbable polyesters for biomedical devices. (C) 2018 The Authors. Abstract:The stereocomplexation of polylactide (PLA) has been widely relied upon to develop degradable, sustainable materials with increased strength and improved material properties in comparison to stereopure PLA. However, forming functionalized copolymers of PLA while retaining high crystallinity remains elusive. Herein, the controlled ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) of lactide (LA) and functionalized cyclic carbonate monomers is undertaken. The produced polymers are shown to remain crystalline up to 25 mol % carbonate content and are efficiently stereocomplexed with homopolymer PLA and copolymers of opposite chirality. Polymers with alkene and alkyne pendent handles are shown to undergo efficient derivatization with thiol-ene click chemistry, which would allow both the covalent conjugation of therapeutic moieties and tuning of material properties.

Abstract:To prepare novel biodegradable copolymers with functional substituents that are distributed statistically or randomly over the macromolecule chain and have improved characteristics compared to homopolymers, we conducted a series of synthetic experiments with a novel cyclic monomer, 5-(benzyloxy)-1,3-dioxepan-2-one (4). This compound was synthesized, and its homopolymer, as well as its copolymers with L-lactide, ε-caprolactone and trimethylene carbonate, were prepared in a polymerization solution with stannous octoate as the initiator. The formation of the copolymers was confirmed using NMR spectroscopy and DSC data. The distribution of the monomeric units of the substituted 7CC in the copolymers with L-lactide and ε-caprolactone is random, as it is close to a statistical distribution. The copolymer with TMC is a gradient copolymer due to the different rates of monomer polymerization. The copolymer with a composition of 10(ε-CL):1(carbonate 4) can be considered a promising polymer after the deprotection of the hydroxy group for the inoculation of the functional substituents due to its convenience of preparation and properties similar to those of poly(ε-caprolactone).

Abstract:A series of P(DL)LA-PEG(1k)-P(DL)LA tri-block co-polymers with various compositions, i.e., containing 2-10 lactoyl units, were prepared via ring opening polymerisation of d,l-lactide in the presence of poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) (M-n = 1000 gmol(-1)) as the initiator and stannous 2-ethylhexanoate as the catalyst at different feed ratios. P(DL)LA-PEG(1k)-P(DL)LA co-polymers were then functionalised with acrylate groups using acryloyl chloride under various reaction conditions. The diacrylated P(DL)LA-PEG(1k)-P(DL)LA (diacryl-P(DL)LA-PEG(1k)-P(DL)LA) were further polymerised to synthesize soluble hyperbranched polymers by either homo-polymerisation or co-polymerisation with poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methylacrylate (PEGMEMA) via free radical polymerisation. The polymer samples obtained were characterised by H-1 NMR (proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra-red spectroscopy), and GPC (Gel Permeation Chromatography). Moreover, the diacryl-P(DL)LA-PEG(1k)-P(DL)LA macromers were used for the preparation of biodegradable crosslinked hydrogels through the Michael addition reaction and radical photo-polymerisation with or without poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methylacrylate (PEGMEMA, M-n = 475 gmol(-1)) as the co-monomer. It was found that fine tuning of the diacryl-P(DL)LA-PEG(1k)-P(DL)LA constituents and its combination with co-monomers resulted in hydrogels with tailored swelling properties. It is envisioned that soluble hyperbranched polymers and crosslinked hydrogels prepared from diacryl-P(DL)LA-PEG(1k)-P(DL)LA macromers can have promising applications in the fields of nano-medicines and regenerative medicines.

Abstract:It is a long-standing challenge to combine mixed monomers into multiblock copolymer (MBC) in a one-pot/one-step polymerization manner. We report the first example of MBC with biodegradable polycarbonate and polyester blocks that were synthesized from highly efficient one-pot/one-step polymerization of cyclohexene oxide (CHO), CO2 and epsilon-caprolactone (epsilon-CL) in the presence of zinc-cobalt double metal cyanide complex and stannous octoate. In this protocol, two cross-chain exchange reactions (CCER) occurred at dual catalysts respectively and connected two independent chain propagation procedures (i.e., polycarbonate formation and polyester formation) simultaneously in a block-by-block manner, affording MBC without tapering structure. The multiblock structure of MBC was determined by the rate ratio of CCER to the two chain propagations and could be simply tuned by various kinetic factors. This protocol is also of significance due to partial utilization of renewable CO2 and improved mechanical properties of the resultant MBC.
Synthesis and characterization of functional polyesters tailored for biomedical applications

Abstract:This work aimed at the development of bioactive polymeric materials to be used for targeted drug delivery and tissue engineering applications. The proposed strategy was based on the design of macromolecular systems whose functionality can be easily modified. Polyesters containing side‐chain end capped by primary hydroxyl groups were synthesized by polyaddition of oxetanes and carboxylic anhydrides catalyzed by quaternary onium salts. The polyaddition of bis(oxetane) with different dicarboxylic acids was also investigated. In all cases, oxetane monomers contained one hydroxyl group either free or protected by a benzyl group. The polymer yield and molecular weight were relatively high when aromatic anhydrides were used. In all other cases, low conversions or no polymerization at all were obtained. In a parallel research line, several alkanols were successfully employed to synthesize different α,β′,β‐trisubstituted‐β‐lactones. These monomers were prepared in five steps starting from diethyl oxalpropionate according to established synthetic routes. Final yields depended on both preparation method and side‐chain structure. By using quaternary ammonium salts as catalysts, the synthesized functional lactones underwent anionic ring opening polymerization leading to the corresponding homopolymers and copolymers in fairly good yields. The prepared polymeric materials were extensively characterized by spectroscopic techniques, size exclusion chromatography, and thermal analysis. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:It is attractive to develop chemically recyclable polymers with desirable performances from commercial monomers to avoid the expensive and time-consuming scalable process for completely new monomers. In this contribution, we present the rapid and controlled ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of bio-sourced commercial alkyl-δ-lactones to produce closed-loop recyclable polyesters in the presence of an organophosphazene base (tBu-P2)/urea binary catalyst. The obtained polyesters are capable of recycling back to pristine monomers by simply heating them in bulk in the presence of stannous octanoate (Sn(Oct)2) as the catalyst. The effects of alkyl substituent length on the polymerization kinetics, thermodynamics, as well as the properties of resultant poly(alkyl-δ-lactone)s were investigated. Well-defined triblock copolymers consisting of poly(alkyl-δ-lactone)s as soft middle block and PLLA as hard end block were successfully prepared by one-pot, sequential ROP of alkyl-δ-lactones and l-lactide (l-LA). These triblock copolymers can be used as pressure-sensitive adhesives without the addition of tackifiers or other additives. The chemical recycling of these triblock copolymers to recover ethyl lactate and alkyl-δ-lactones with high yields was achieved by alcoholysis and then distillation under reduced pressure.

Abstract:We have recently demonstrated that polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN), when cultured with LPS or TNF‐α, have the capacity to release CCL20, a chemokine primarily chemotactic for immature dendritic cells and specific lymphocyte subsets. Here, we report that the chemoattractant formyl‐methionyl‐leucyl‐phenylalanine (fMLP), as well as the immunoregulatory cytokine IFN‐γ, can significantly up‐modulate the production of neutrophil‐derived CCL20 through entirely unrelated mechanisms. We found that fMLP dramatically up‐regulates CCL20 mRNA expression and synthesis in neutrophils stimulated with LPS for 2–3 h, and that its effect takes place through CCL20 mRNA stabilization. In contrast, IFN‐γ potentiates CCL20 gene expression and production only after 21 h of LPS treatment, its effect being mediated by endogenous TNF‐α in an autocrine fashion, as revealed using neutralizing anti‐TNF‐α antibodies added to IFN‐γ plus LPS‐treated PMN. Finally, we demonstrate that activation of p38 mitogen‐activated protein kinase (MAPK) plays an important role in mediating the production of CCL20 induced by LPS (with or without IFN‐γ), whereas activation of p42/44 extracellular signal‐regulated kinases (ERK) is involved in the enhancing effect of fMLP. Taken together, these findings identify novel biological actions exerted by fMLP and IFN‐γ, potentially involved in the orchestration of inflammatory and immune responses within epithelial and mucosal tissue.
Facile Synthesis of Acid-Labile Polymers with Pendent Ortho Esters.

Abstract:This work presents a facile approach for preparation of acid-labile and biocompatible polymers with pendent cyclic ortho esters, which is based on the efficient and mild reactions between cyclic ketene acetal (CKA) and hydroxyl groups. Three CKAs, 2-ethylidene-1,3-dioxane (EDO), 2-ethylidene-1,3-dioxolane (EDL), and 2-ethylidene-4- methyl-1,3-dioxolane (EMD) were prepared from the corresponding cyclic vinyl acetals by catalytic isomerization of the double bond. The reaction of CKAs with different alcohols and diols was examined using trace of p-toluenesulfonic acid as a catalyst. For the monohydroxyl alcohols, cyclic ortho esters were formed by simple addition of the hydroxyl group toward CKAs with ethanol showing a much greater reactivity than iso-propanol. When 1,2- or 1,3-diols were used to react with the CKAs, we observed the isomerized cyclic ortho esters besides the simple addition products. Biocompatible polyols, that is, poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were then modified with CKAs, and the degree of substitution of the pendent ortho esters can be easily tuned by changing feed ratio. Both the small molecule ortho esters and the CKA-modified polymers demonstrate the pH-dependent hydrolysis profiles, which depend also on the chemical structure of the ortho esters as well as the polymer hydrophobicity.
CO2-Based Polycarbonates through Ring-Opening Polymerization of Cyclic Carbonates Promoted by a NHC-Based Zinc Complex

Abstract:A backbone-substituted N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) zinc complex, in combination with alcohol initiators, has been shown to be an effective catalyst for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of trimethylene carbonate (TMC) to poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC) devoid of oxetane linkages. The ROP of TMC proceeded in solution to give PTMC, possessing controlled molecular mass (2500 < Mn < 10000) and low dispersity (Đ ∼ 1.2). Changing the alcohol initiators, PTMCs with different end-groups were obtained, included a telechelic polymer. The results of MALDI-ToF and NMR analysis confirmed the controlled/living nature of the present ROP catalytic system, where side reactions, such as inter- and intramolecular transesterifications, were minimized during the polymerization. Solution studies in different solvents demonstrated the polymerization reaction to proceed via a mechanism first order in monomer and in catalyst. The zinc complex was also able to convert substituted cyclic carbonates, which were purposely synthesized from renewable feedstocks such as CO2 and 1,3-diols. For the asymmetric 2-Me TMC monomer, good regioselectivity was observed (Xreg up to 0.92). The excellent control of the polymerization process was finally brought to light through the preparation of polycarbonate/polyether triblock copolymers by using polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a macroinitiator and of well-defined di- and triblock polycarbonate/polylactide copolymers by sequential ROP of TMC and L-LA.

Abstract:In order to prepare a new material with good biocompatibility, poly(lactic acid)-citric acid (PLCA) copolymer was prepared by direct copolymerization using macroporous resin as catalyst. Experimental comparison of the catalytic properties of different types of macroporous resin-Amberlyst (A), the order of the catalytic efficiency is: A-70 > A-15 > A-35 > A-36, the main cause of the catalytic performance difference is the proportion of different resin halogen element content is different, and heat resistance performance of different catalysts. The copolymerized products were analyzed by IR, NMR, XRD, and DSC, respectively. The preparation of poly(lactic acid), citric acid copolymer PLCA crystal configurations and poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) are similar, but the crystallinity and heat temperature slightly lower than that of PLLA, and heat resistance, the crystallinity of the same type of PLCA were positively correlated, high crystallinity, is its high heat resistance.

Abstract:Nowadays, the promotion and application of aliphatic-aromatic copolyesters, such as poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), are growing into a general trend. Although the structures of diacids exerted substantial impacts on degradation behavior, the underlying mechanisms have rarely been studied. In this work, 2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid was combined with succinic acid (PBSF), adipic acid (PBAF) and diglycolic acid (PBDF) to prepare three kinds of copolyesters. They showed unique degradation behaviors in buffer, enzyme environment and artificial seawater. These characteristics are closely related to the structural compositions of diacids. PBAFs displayed impressive biodegradability when catalyzed by Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB), while the more hydrophilic PBDFs exhibited faster hydrolysis in both buffer and artificial seawater. PBSFs, with hydrophobic and short segments, obtained a relatively slower rate of hydrolysis and enzymatic degradation. The reactivity sites and hydrolytic pathway were revealed by the combination of DFT calculation and Fukui function analysis. MD simulations, QM/MM optimizations and theozyme calculations showed that PBAF-CALB was prone to form a pre-reaction state, leading to the reduced energy barrier in the acylation process. This work revealed the effects of different structural features of diacids on polymer degradation and paved a way to design target biodegradable polymers in different degradation conditions.
