Abstract:Lipomas are benign tumors situated preferably on shallow areas of members and trunk, although they can be detected also on head and neck. Infiltrative lipomas subfasciae (intramuscular or intermuscular) are on the contrary rarities. Differential diagnosis with liposarcoma is important because both growths share the preferential those sites. Diagnosis rest upon clinical findings, biopsy with FNA, rounded off with TAC, MRI or ultrasounds, according to the lesion's site. Treatment of choice is surgical exeresis. We report 5 cases of infiltrative lipomas and analyze the diagnostic procedures and the treatment followed.

Abstract:In this study, different approaches for detecting of beach litter (BL) items in coastal environments are applied: the direct in situ survey, an indirect image analysis based on the manual visual screening approach, and two different automatic segmentation and classification tools. One is a Mask-RCNN based-algorithm, already used in a previous work, but specifically improved in this study for multi-class analysis. Test cases were carried out at the Torre Guaceto Marine Protected Area (Apulia Region, southern Italy), using a novel dataset from images acquired in different coastal environments by tailored photogrammetric Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) surveys. The analysis of the overall methodologies used in this study highlights the potential exhibited by the two machine learning (ML) techniques (Mask-RCCN-based and SVM algorithms), but they still show some limitations concerning direct methodologies. The results of the analysis show that the Mask-RCNN-based algorithm requires further improvements and a consistent increase in the number of training elements, while the SVM algorithm shows limitations related to pixel-based classification. Furthermore, the outcomes of this research highlight the high suitability of ML tools for assessing BL pollution and contributing to coastal conservation efforts.

Abstract:This paper introduces an advanced acoustic imaging system leveraging multibeam water column data at various frequencies to detect and classify marine litter. This study encompasses (i) the acquisition of test tank data for diverse types of marine litter at multiple acoustic frequencies; (ii) the creation of a comprehensive acoustic image dataset with meticulous labelling and formatting; (iii) the implementation of sophisticated classification algorithms, namely support vector machine (SVM) and convolutional neural network (CNN), alongside cutting-edge detection algorithms based on transfer learning, including single-shot multibox detector (SSD) and You Only Look once (YOLO), specifically YOLOv8. The findings reveal discrimination between different classes of marine litter across the implemented algorithms for both detection and classification. Furthermore, cross-frequency studies were conducted to assess model generalisation, evaluating the performance of models trained on one acoustic frequency when tested with acoustic images based on different frequencies. This approach underscores the potential of multibeam data in the detection and classification of marine litter in the water column, paving the way for developing novel research methods in real-life environments.

Abstract:Remote-sensing ocean colour studies have already been used to determine coastal water quality, coastal biodiversity, and nutrient availability. In recent years, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) equipped with multispectral sensors, originally designed for agriculture applications, have also enabled water-quality studies of coastal waters. However, since the sea surface is constantly changing, commonly used photogrammetric methods fail when applied to UAV images captured over water areas. In this work, we evaluate the applicability of a five-band multispectral sensor mounted on a UAV to derive scientifically valuable water parameters such as chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration and total suspended solids (TSS), including a new Python workflow for the manual generation of an orthomosaic in aquatic areas exclusively based on the sensor's metadata. We show water-quality details in two different sites along the Maltese coastline on the centimetre-scale, improving the existing approximations that are available for the region through Sentinel-3 OLCI imagery at a much lower spatial resolution of 300 m. The Chl-a and TSS values derived for the studied regions were within the expected ranges and varied between 0 to 3 mg/m3 and 10 to 20 mg/m3, respectively. Spectral comparisons were also carried out along with some statistics calculations such as RMSE, MAE, or bias in order to validate the obtained results.

Spectral Analysis of Marine Debris in Simulated and Observed Sentinel-2/MSI Images using Unsupervised Classification

Abstract:Marine litter poses significant threats to marine and coastal environments, with its impacts ever-growing. Remote sensing provides an advantageous supplement to traditional mitigation techniques, such as local cleaning operations and trawl net surveys, due to its capabilities for extensive coverage and frequent observation. In this study, we used Radiative Transfer Model (RTM) simulated data and data from the Multispectral Instrument (MSI) of the Sentinel-2 mission in combination with machine learning algorithms. Our aim was to study the spectral behavior of marine plastic pollution and evaluate the applicability of RTMs within this research area. The results from the exploratory analysis and unsupervised classification using the KMeans algorithm indicate that the spectral behavior of pollutants is influenced by factors such as the type of polymer and pixel coverage percentage. The findings also reveal spectral characteristics and trends of association and differentiation among elements. The applied methodology is strongly dependent on the data, and if reapplied in new, more diverse, and detailed datasets, it can potentially generate even better results. These insights can guide future research in remote sensing applications for detecting marine plastic pollution.

Abstract:Nowadays, emerging technologies, such as long-range transmitters, increasingly miniaturized components for positioning, and enhanced imaging sensors, have led to an upsurge in the availability of new ecological applications for remote sensing based on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), sometimes referred to as “drones”. In fact, structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetry coupled with imagery acquired by UAVs offers a rapid and inexpensive tool to produce high-resolution orthomosaics, giving ecologists a new way for responsive, timely, and cost-effective monitoring of ecological processes. Here, we adopted a lightweight quadcopter as an aerial survey tool and object-based image analysis (OBIA) workflow to demonstrate the strength of such methods in producing very high spatial resolution maps of sensitive marine habitats. Therefore, three different coastal environments were mapped using the autonomous flight capability of a lightweight UAV equipped with a fully stabilized consumer-grade RGB digital camera. In particular we investigated a Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadow, a rocky coast with nurseries for juvenile fish, and two sandy areas showing biogenic reefs of Sabelleria alveolata. We adopted, for the first time, UAV-based raster thematic maps of these key coastal habitats, produced after OBIA classification, as a new method for fine-scale, low-cost, and time saving characterization of sensitive marine environments which may lead to a more effective and efficient monitoring and management of natural resources.

Abstract:Marine litter (ML) is recognized as one of the main socio-economic and environmental concerns and monitoring operations have been realized worldwide in order to collect information on the types, quantities and distribution of marine debris. In this study, we used Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) images to map the presence of ML on a coastal spit in relation to geomorphological aspects and vegetation. Our results show that ML is present everywhere, but concentrates in the beach wrack, dunes, and saltmarshes, highlighting the role of the vegetation in trapping ML. Moreover, ML will most probably remain trapped by the saltmarsh vegetation, since they are not visible and easily accessible to allow cleaning operations. On the contrary, cleaning operations may remove the ML present in the beach wrack. Finally, our results provide useful information to support decision-makers for improving beach cleaning activities in the Po river Delta areas (Italy).

Abstract:This paper presents a new Remote Hyperspectral Imaging System (RHIS) embedded on an Unmanned Aquatic Drone (UAD) for plastic detection and identification in coastal and freshwater environments. This original system, namely the Remotely Operated Vehicle of the University of Littoral Côte d'Opale (ROV-ULCO), works in a near-field of view, where the distance between the hyperspectral camera and the water surface is about 45 cm. In this paper, the new ROV-ULCO system with all its components is firstly presented. Then, a hyperspectral image database of plastic litter acquired with this system is described. This database contains hyperspectral data cubes of different plastic types and polymers corresponding to the most-common plastic litter items found in aquatic environments. An in situ spectral analysis was conducted from this benchmark database to characterize the hyperspectral reflectance of these items in order to identify the absorption feature wavelengths for each type of plastic. Finally, the ability of our original system RHIS to automatically recognize different types of plastic litter was assessed by applying different supervised machine learning methods on a set of representative image patches of marine litter. The obtained results highlighted the plastic litter classification capability with an overall accuracy close to 90%. This paper showed that the newly presented RHIS coupled with the UAD is a promising approach to identify plastic waste in aquatic environments.

Abstract:Although marine litter monitoring has increased over the years, the pollution of coastal waters is still understudied and there is a need for spatial and temporal data. Aerial (UAV) and underwater (ROV) drones have demonstrated their potential as monitoring tools at coastal sites; however, suitable conditions for use and cost-efficiency of the methods still need attention. This study tested UAVs and ROVs for the monitoring of floating, submerged, and seafloor items using artificial plastic plates and assessed the influence of water conditions (water transparency, color, depth, bottom substrate), item characteristics (color and size), and method settings (flight/dive height) on detection accuracy. A cost-efficiency analysis suggests that both UAV and ROV methods lie within the same cost and efficiency category as current on-boat observation and scuba diving methods and shall be considered for further testing in real scenarios for official marine litter monitoring methods.
Deep and Machine Learning Image Classification of Coastal Wetlands Using Unpiloted Aircraft System Multispectral Images and Lidar Datasets

Abstract:The recent developments of new deep learning architectures create opportunities to accurately classify high-resolution unoccupied aerial system (UAS) images of natural coastal systems and mandate continuous evaluation of algorithm performance. We evaluated the performance of the U-Net and DeepLabv3 deep convolutional network architectures and two traditional machine learning techniques (support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF)) applied to seventeen coastal land cover types in west Florida using UAS multispectral aerial imagery and canopy height models (CHM). Twelve combinations of spectral bands and CHMs were used. Our results using the spectral bands showed that the U-Net (83.80–85.27% overall accuracy) and the DeepLabV3 (75.20–83.50% overall accuracy) deep learning techniques outperformed the SVM (60.50–71.10% overall accuracy) and the RF (57.40–71.0%) machine learning algorithms. The addition of the CHM to the spectral bands slightly increased the overall accuracy as a whole in the deep learning models, while the addition of a CHM notably improved the SVM and RF results. Similarly, using bands outside the three spectral bands, namely, near-infrared and red edge, increased the performance of the machine learning classifiers but had minimal impact on the deep learning classification results. The difference in the overall accuracies produced by using UAS-based lidar and SfM point clouds, as supplementary geometrical information, in the classification process was minimal across all classification techniques. Our results highlight the advantage of using deep learning networks to classify high-resolution UAS images in highly diverse coastal landscapes. We also found that low-cost, three-visible-band imagery produces results comparable to multispectral imagery that do not risk a significant reduction in classification accuracy when adopting deep learning models.

Abstract:Abstract Worldwide seagrass habitats are under severe anthropogenic threat. In the United Kingdom (UK), the health of habitats of the widely distributed Zostera species is particularly threatened by eutrophication that can lead to detrimental macroalgae overgrowth. To manage and conserve seagrass habitats, effective monitoring tools are required. We use an off‐the‐shelf consumer‐grade multispectral (RGB, red edge, and near‐infrared) camera mounted on an unoccupied aerial vehicle (UAV) to map an intertidal multispecies seagrass environment in Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve, Northumberland, UK. Field surveys were undertaken of three seagrass areas, including those dominated by Zostera noltii , Zostera marina and macroalgae. Using the Maximum Likelihood Classifier (MLC), results indicated an overall accuracy (OA) between 84% and 91% across classified habitat maps. As expected, the red edge and near‐infrared bands offered an advantage beyond RGB imagery to discriminate between the vegetation types for accurate habitat mapping. Our research provides a foundation for accurately mapping a complex intertidal seagrass environment through the utilisation of an off‐the‐shelf multispectral UAV. The study may aid the implementation and development of effective monitoring programmes for the management of Zostera spp. decline and macroalgae proliferation to prevent seagrass degradation and conserve these valuable yet fragile ecosystems.

Abstract:The present work aims to demonstrate how machine learning (ML) techniques can be used for automatic feature detection and extraction in fluvial environments. The use of photogrammetry and machine learning algorithms has improved the understanding of both environmental and anthropic issues. The developed methodology was applied considering the acquisition of multiple photogrammetric images thanks to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) carrying multispectral cameras. These surveys were carried out in the Salbertrand area, along the Dora Riparia River, situated in Piedmont (Italy). The authors developed an algorithm able to identify and detect the water table contour concerning the landed areas: the automatic classification in ML found a valid identification of different patterns (water, gravel bars, vegetation, and ground classes) in specific hydraulic and geomatics conditions. Indeed, the RE+NIR data gave us a sharp rise in terms of accuracy by about 11% and 13.5% of F1-score average values in the testing point clouds compared to RGB data. The obtained results about the automatic classification led us to define a new procedure with precise validity conditions.

Abstract:Anthropogenic litter density and composition data were obtained by conducting aerial surveys on 44 beaches along the Saudi Arabian Coast of the Red Sea [1]. The aerial surveys were completed with commercial drones of the DJI Phantom suite flown at a 10 m altitude. The stills have a resolution of less than 0.5 cm pixels-1, hence, litter objects of few centimetres like bottle caps are easily detectable in the drone images. We here provide a subsample of the drone images acquired. To spare the time needed to visually count the litter objects in the thousands of drone images acquired, these were automatically screened using an object detection algorithm, specifically a Faster R-CNN, able to perform a binary classification in litter and non-litter and to categorize the objects in classes. The multi-class classification, however, is a challenging problem and, hence, it was conducted only on the 15 beaches that showed the highest performance after the binary classification. The performance of the algorithm was calculated by visually screening a subsample of images and it was used to correct the output of the Faster R-CNN. The described steps allowed to obtain an estimate of the litter density in 44 beaches and the litter composition in 15 beaches. By multiplying the relative abundance of each litter class and the median weight of objects belonging to each class, we obtained an estimate of the total mass of plastic beached on 15 beaches. Possible predictors of litter density and mass are the population and marine traffic densities at the site, the exposure of the beach to the prevailing wind and the wind speed, the fetch length and the presence of vegetation where litter could get trapped. Making such raw data (i.e. litter density and composition and their predictors) available can help building the base for a robust global estimate of anthropogenic litter in coastal environments and it is particularly important if data regards an understudied region like the Arabian Peninsula. Moreover, we share a subsample of the original drone images to allow usage from stakeholders.
Machine learning-based detection and mapping of riverine litter utilizing Sentinel-2 imagery

Abstract:Despite the substantial impact of rivers on the global marine litter problem, riverine litter has been accorded inadequate consideration. Therefore, our objective was to detect riverine litter by utilizing middle-scale multispectral satellite images and machine learning (ML), with the Tisza River (Hungary) as a study area. The Very High Resolution (VHR) images obtained from the Google Earth database were employed to recognize some riverine litter spots (a blend of anthropogenic and natural substances). These litter spots served as the basis for training and validating five supervised machine-learning algorithms based on Sentinel-2 images [Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Support Vector Classifier (SVC), Random Forest (RF), Naïve Bays (NB) and Decision Tree (DT)]. To evaluate the generalization capability of the developed models, they were tested on larger unseen data under varying hydrological conditions and with different litter sizes. Besides the best-performing model was used to investigate the spatio-temporal variations of riverine litter in the Middel Tisza. According to the results, almost all the developed models showed favorable metrics based on the validation dataset (e.g., F1-score; SVC: 0.94, ANN: 0.93, RF: 0.91, DT: 0.90, and NB: 0.83); however, during the testing process, they showed medium (e.g., F1-score; RF:0.69, SVC: 0.62; ANN: 0.62) to poor performance (e.g., F1-score; NB: 0.48; DT: 0.45). The capability of all models to detect litter was bounded to the pixel size of the Sentinel-2 images. Based on the spatio-temporal investigation, hydraulic structures (e.g., Kisköre Dam) are the greatest litter accumulation spots. Although the highest transport rate of litter occurs during floods, the largest litter spot area upstream of the Kisköre Dam was observed at low stages in summer. This study represents a preliminary step in the automatic detection of riverine litter; therefore, additional research incorporating a larger dataset with more representative small litter spots, as well as finer spatial resolution images is necessary.
Designing A Sustainable Marine Debris Clean-up Framework without Human Labels

Abstract:Marine debris poses a significant ecological threat to birds, fish, and other animal life. Traditional methods for assessing debris accumulation involve labor-intensive and costly manual surveys. This study introduces a framework that utilizes aerial imagery captured by drones to conduct remote trash surveys. Leveraging computer vision techniques, our approach detects, classifies, and maps marine debris distributions. The framework uses Grounding DINO, a transformer-based zero-shot object detector, and CLIP, a vision-language model for zero-shot object classification, enabling the detection and classification of debris objects based on material type without the need for training labels. To mitigate over-counting due to different views of the same object, Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) is employed for duplicate matching using local object features. Additionally, we have developed a user-friendly web application that facilitates end-to-end analysis of drone images, including object detection, classification, and visualization on a map to support cleanup efforts. Our method achieves competitive performance in detection (0.69 mean IoU) and classification (0.74 F1 score) across seven debris object classes without labeled data, comparable to state-of-the-art supervised methods. This framework has the potential to streamline automated trash sampling surveys, fostering efficient and sustainable community-led cleanup initiatives.

Abstract:Wetlands play a critical role in maintaining stable and productive ecosystems, and they continue to be at heightened risk from anthropogenic and natural degradation, especially along the rapidly developing Atlantic Coastal Plain of North America. As such, strategies to develop up-to-date and high-resolution wetland inventories and classifications remain highly relevant in the context of accelerating sea-level rise and coastal changes. Historically, satellite and airborne remote sensing data along with traditional field-based methods have been used for wetland delineation, yet, more recently, the advent of Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) platforms and sensors is opening new avenues of performing rapid and accurate wetland classifications. To test the relative advantages and limitations of UAS technologies for wetland mapping and classification, we developed wetland classification models using UAS-collected multispectral and UAS-collected light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data relative to airborne-derived LiDAR models of wetland types ranging from palustrine to estuarine. The models were parameterized through a pixel-based random forest algorithm to evaluate model performance systematically and establish variable importance for a suite of variables including topographic, hydrologic, and vegetation-based indices. Based on our experimental results, the average overall classification accuracy and kappa coefficients for the UAS LiDAR-derived models are 75.29% and 0.74, respectively, compared to 79.80% and 0.75 for the airborne LiDAR-derived models, with significant differences in the spatial representation of final wetland classes. The resulting classification maps for the UAS models capture more precise wetland delineations than those of airborne models when trained with ground reference data collected at the same time as the UAS flights. The similar accuracy between the airborne and UAS models suggest that the UAS LiDAR is comparable to the airborne LiDAR. However, given poor revisit time of the airborne surveys and the high spatial resolution and precision of the UAS data, UAS-collected LiDAR provides excellent complementary data to statewide airborne missions or for specific applications that require hyperspatial data. For more structurally complex wetland types (such as the palustrine scrub shrub), UAS hyperspatial LiDAR data performs better and is much more advantageous to use in delineation and classification models. The results of this study contribute towards enhancing wetland delineation and classification models using data collected from multiple UAS platforms.
Off-shore and underwater sampling of aquatic environments with the aerial-aquatic drone MEDUSA

Abstract:Monitoring of aquatic habitats for water quality and biodiversity requires regular sampling, often in off-shore locations and underwater. Such sampling is commonly performed manually from research vessels, or if autonomous, is constrained to permanent installations. Consequentially, high frequency ecological monitoring, such as for harmful algal blooms, are limited to few sites and/or temporally infrequent. Here, we demonstrate the use of MEDUSA, an Unmanned Aerial-Aquatic Vehicle which is capable of performing underwater sampling and inspection at up to 10 m depth, and is composed of a multirotor platform, a tether management unit and a tethered micro Underwater Vehicle. The system is validated in the task of vertical profiling of Chlorophyll-a levels in freshwater systems by means of a custom solid sample filtering mechanism. This mechanism can collect up to two independent samples per mission by pumping water through a pair of glass-fibre GF/F filters. Chlorophyll levels measured from the solid deposits on the filters are consistent and on par with traditional sampling methods, highlighting the potential of using UAAVs to sample aquatic locations at high frequency and high spatial resolution.

Abstract:Wetlands play a vital role in our ecosystems, preserving water quality, controlling flooding, and supplying aquifers. Wetlands are rapidly degrading due to threats by human encroachment and rising sea levels. Effective and timely mapping of wetland ecosystems is vital to their preservation. Unoccupied Aircraft Systems (UAS) have demonstrated the capability to access and record data from difficult-to-reach wetlands at a rapid pace, increasing the viability of wetland identification and classification through machine learning (ML) methods. This study proposes a UAS-based gradient boosting approach to wetland classification in coastal regions using hyperspatial LiDAR and multispectral (MS) data, implemented on a series of wetland sites in the Atlantic Coastal Plain region of North Carolina, USA. Our results demonstrated that Xtreme Gradient Boosting performed the best on a cross-site dataset with an accuracy of 83.20% and an Area Under Curve (AUC) score of 0.8994. The study also found that Digital Terrain Model-based variables had the greatest feature importance on a cross-site dataset. This study's novelty lies in utilizing cross-site validation using Gradient Boosting methods with limited amounts of UAS data while explicitly considering topographical features and vegetation characteristics derived from multi-source UAS collections for both wetland and non-wetland classes. Future work is encouraged with a larger dataset or with semi-supervised learning techniques to improve the accuracy of the model.
Mapping fine-scale seagrass disturbance using bi-temporal UAV-acquired images and multivariate alteration detection

Abstract:Seagrasses provide critical ecosystem services but cumulative human pressure on coastal environments has seen a global decline in their health and extent. Key processes of anthropogenic disturbance can operate at local spatio-temporal scales that are not captured by conventional satellite imaging. Seagrass management strategies to prevent longer-term loss and ensure successful restoration require effective methods for monitoring these fine-scale changes. Current seagrass monitoring methods involve resource-intensive fieldwork or recurrent image classification. This study presents an alternative method using iteratively reweighted multivariate alteration detection (IR-MAD), an unsupervised change detection technique originally developed for satellite images. We investigate the application of IR-MAD to image data acquired using an unoccupied aerial vehicle (UAV). UAV images were captured at a 14-week interval over two seagrass beds in Brisbane Water, NSW, Australia using a 10-band Micasense RedEdge-MX Dual camera system. To guide sensor selection, a further three band subsets representing simpler sensor configurations (6, 5 and 3 bands) were also analysed using eight categories of seagrass change. The ability of the IR-MAD method, and for the four different sensor configurations, to distinguish the categories of change were compared using the Jeffreys-Matusita (JM) distance measure of spectral separability. IR-MAD based on the full 10-band sensor images produced the highest separability values indicating that human disturbances (propeller scars and other seagrass damage) were distinguishable from all other change categories. IR-MAD results for the 6-band and 5-band sensors also distinguished key seagrass change features. The IR-MAD results for the simplest 3-band sensor (an RGB camera) detected change features, but change categories were not strongly separable from each other. Analysis of IR-MAD weights indicated that additional visible bands, including a coastal blue band and a second red band, improve change detection. IR-MAD is an effective method for seagrass monitoring, and this study demonstrates the potential for multispectral sensors with additional visible bands to improve seagrass change detection.
