Effects of Temperature on Foam Stability and Separation Efficiencies of Foam Formed by High Concentration SDS Aqueous Solution during Foam Separation

Abstract:Separating high concentration surfactant by foam separation is a difficult problem, which is also the bottleneck that constrains the application of foam separation technology to industrialization. In order to resolve this difficult problem, anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) was used as the model system, and the effects of temperature on bubble diameter, foam stability, enrichment ratio and recovery percentage were investigated around the critical micelle concentration(CMC) of SDS.The results show that the temperature is an important parameter for separating high concentration surfactant by foam separation. When the concentrations of SDS aqueous solution are 1.2,2.3,3.5 g·L-1,respectively,with increasing temperature from 30 to 70℃,foam stability initially increases and then decreases,at the same time under the conditions of pH 6.9,and superficial air flow rate 2.4×10-3 m·s-1,the bubble diameter firstly decreases and then increases, the enrichment ratio increases by 3~5 times, and the recovery percentage decreases by 34%-65%.
