Abstract:A pragmatic hybrid genetic algorithm named parallel adaptive genetic simulated annealing (PAGSA) is developed. The proposed hybrid approach combines the merits of genetic algorithm (GA) with simulated annealing (SA) to construct a more efficient genetic simulated annealing (GSA) algorithm for global search, while the iterative hill climbing (IHC) method is used as a local search technique to incorporate into GSA loop for speeding up the convergence of the algorithm. In addition, a self-adaptive hybrid mechanism is developed to maintain a tradeoff between the global and local optimizer searching then to efficiently locate quality solution to complicated optimization problem. The computational results and application have illustrated that the global searching ability and the convergence speed of this hybrid algorithm are significantly improved.

Abstract:Backtracking search algorithm (BSA) is a relatively new evolutionary algorithm, which has a good optimization performance just like other population-based algorithms. However, there is also an insufficiency in BSA regarding its convergence speed and convergence precision. For solving the problem shown in BSA, this article proposes an improved BSA named COBSA. Enlightened by particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, population control factor is added to the variation equation aiming to improve the convergence speed of BSA, so as to make algorithm have a better ability of escaping the local optimum. In addition, enlightened by differential evolution (DE) algorithm, this article proposes a novel evolutionary equation based on the fact that the disadvantaged group will search just around the best individual chosen from previous iteration to enhance the ability of local search. Simulation experiments based on a set of 18 benchmark functions show that, in general, COBSA displays obvious superiority in convergence speed and convergence precision when compared with BSA and the comparison algorithms.

Abstract:Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) have a lot of potential to handle nonlinear and non-convex objective functions. Particularly, the backtracking search algorithm (BSA) is a popular nature-based evolutionary optimization method that has attracted many researchers due to its simple structure and efficiency in problem-solving across diverse fields. However, like other optimization algorithms, BSA is also prone to reduced diversity, local optima, and inadequate intensification capabilities. To overcome the flaws and increase the performance of BSA, this research proposes a centroid opposition-based backtracking search algorithm (CoBSA) for global optimization and engineering design problems. In CoBSA, specific individuals simultaneously acquire current and historical population knowledge to preserve population variety and improve exploration capability. On the other hand, other individuals execute the position from the current population's centroid opposition to progress convergence speed and exploitation potential. In addition, an elite process based on logistic chaotic local search was developed to improve the superiority of the current individuals. The suggested CoBSA was validated on a set of benchmark functions and then employed in a set of application examples. According to extensive numerical results and assessments, CoBSA outperformed the other state-of-the-art methods in terms of accurateness, reliability, and execution capability.

Abstract:Adjusting the search behaviors of swarm-based algorithms during their execution is a fundamental errand for addressing real-world global optimizing challenges. Along this line, scholars are actively investigating the unvisited areas of a problem domain rationally. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), a popular swarm-based optimization algorithm, is broadly applied to resolve different real-world problems because of its more robust searching capacity. However, in some situations, due to an unbalanced trade-off between exploitation and exploration, PSO gets stuck in a suboptimal solution. To overcome this problem, this study proposes a new ensemble algorithm called e-mPSOBSA with the aid of the reformed Backtracking Search Algorithm (BSA) and PSO. The proposed technique first integrates PSO's operational potential and then introduces BSA's exploration capability to help boost global exploration, local exploitation, and an acceptable balance during the quest process. The IEEE CEC 2014 and CEC 2017 test function suite was considered for evaluation. The outcomes were contrasted with 26 state-of-the-art algorithms, including popular PSO and BSA variants. The convergence analysis, diversity analysis, and statistical test were also executed. In addition, the projected e-mPSOBSA was employed to evaluate four unconstrained and seven constrained engineering design problems, and performances were equated with various algorithms. All these analyses endorse the better performance of the suggested e-mPSOBSA for global optimization tasks, search performance, solution accuracy, and convergence rate.

Abstract:The exposition of any nature-inspired optimization technique relies firmly upon its executed organized framework. Since the regularly utilized backtracking search algorithm (BSA) is a fixed framework, it is not always appropriate for all difficulty levels of problems and, in this manner, probably does not search the entire search space proficiently. To address this limitation, we propose a modified BSA framework, called gQR-BSA, based on the quasi reflection-based initialization, quantum Gaussian mutations, adaptive parameter execution, and quasi-reflection-based jumping to change the coordinate structure of the BSA. In gQR-BSA, a quantum Gaussian mechanism was developed based on the best population information mechanism to boost the population distribution information. As population distribution data can represent characteristics of a function landscape, gQR-BSA has the ability to distinguish the methodology of the landscape in the quasi-reflection-based jumping. The updated automatically managed parameter control framework is also connected to the proposed algorithm. In every iteration, the quasi-reflection-based jumps aim to jump from local optima and are adaptively modified based on knowledge obtained from offspring to global optimum. Herein, the proposed gQR-BSA was utilized to solve three sets of well-known standards of functions, including unimodal, multimodal, and multimodal fixed dimensions, and to solve three well-known engineering optimization problems. The numerical and experimental results reveal that the algorithm can obtain highly efficient solutions to both benchmark and real-life optimization problems.

Abstract:To improve the performance of the backtracking search optimization algorithm (BSA), a multi-population cooperative evolution strategy guided BSA with hierarchical knowledge (HKBSA) is proposed in this paper. According to the domain knowledge of the candidates in objective space, the population is divided into the dominant population, the ordinary population and the inferior population. The information between the sub populations has interacted with the evolution processes of the three sub-populations. The individuals in the dominant population are maintained as the optimal solutions and are utilized to guide the evolution of the other two sub-populations. A multi-strategy mutation mechanism is applied to solve non-separable problems. The distribution vector of inferior individuals is constructed by sampling, and a mechanism of the individual generation with feedback is proposed by combining self-learning strategy and elite learning strategy. The convergence of HKBSA is analyzed with the Markov model. Compared with the state-of-the-art BSA variants, HKBSA outperforms other algorithms in terms of the speed of convergence, solution accuracy and stability.

Abstract:The particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a population-based stochastic optimization technique by the social behavior of bird flocking and fish schooling. The PSO has a high convergence rate. It is prone to losing diversity along the iterative optimization process and may get trapped into a poor local optimum. Overcoming these defects is still a significant problem in PSO applications. In contrast, the backtracking search optimization algorithm (BSA) has a robust global exploration ability, whereas, it has a low local exploitation ability and converges slowly. This paper proposed an improved PSO with BSA called PSOBSA to resolve the original PSO algorithm's problems that BSA's mutation and crossover operators were modified through the neighborhood to increase the convergence rate. In addition to that, a new mutation operator was introduced to improve the convergence accuracy and evade the local optimum. Several benchmark problems are used to test the performance and efficiency of the proposed PSOBSA. The experimental results show that PSOBSA outperforms other well-known metaheuristic algorithms and several state-of-the-art PSO variants in terms of global exploration ability and accuracy, and rate of convergence on almost all of the benchmark problems.

Abstract:To eliminate the use of complex operators such as crossover and mutation ones in genetic algorithms, attempts are made to exploit the use of population based incremental learning (PBIL) evolution algorithm. In order to preserve the global search ability without destroying the conceptual simplicity and implementation easiness of existing PBIL methods, some improvements are proposed in this paper. The major enhancements include the use of the best solution in the current iterative cycle to guide the search towards promising regions, the employment of the worst solution to shift the search away from the worst individuals to speed up the convergence, and the introduction of a novel mechanism for generating new individuals to improve the global search ability. To validate and illustrate the merits of the proposed PBIL algorithm, two different optimal design problems are studied, and the numerical results are reported and compared in the paper.

Abstract:To improve the performance of the sparrow search algorithm in solving complex optimization problems, this study proposes a novel variant called the Improved Beetle Antennae Search-Based Sparrow Search Algorithm (IBSSA). A new elite dynamic opposite learning strategy is proposed in the population initialization stage to enhance population diversity. In the update stage of the discoverer, a staged inertia weight guidance mechanism is used to improve the update formula of the discoverer, promote the information exchange between individuals, and improve the algorithm's ability to optimize on a global level. After the follower's position is updated, the logarithmic spiral opposition-based learning strategy is introduced to disturb the initial position of the individual in the beetle antennae search algorithm to obtain a more purposeful solution. To address the issue of decreased diversity and susceptibility to local optima in the sparrow population during later stages, the improved beetle antennae search algorithm and sparrow search algorithm are combined using a greedy strategy. This integration aims to improve convergence accuracy. On 20 benchmark test functions and the CEC2017 Test suite, IBSSA performed better than other advanced algorithms. Moreover, six engineering optimization problems were used to demonstrate the improved algorithm's effectiveness and feasibility.

Abstract:Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a population-based stochastic search algorithm inspired from the natural behavior of bird flocking or fish schooling for searching their foods. Due to its easiness in numerical implantations, PSO has been widely applied to solve a variety of inverse and optimization problems. However, a PSO is often trapped into local optima while dealing with complex and real world design problems. In this regard, a new modified PSO is proposed by introducing a mutation mechanism and using dynamic algorithm parameters. According to the proposed mutation mechanism, one particle is randomly selected from all personal best ones to generate some trial particles to preserve the diversity of the algorithm in the final searching stage of the evolution process. Moreover, the random variations in the two learning factors will help the particles to reach an optimal solution. In addition, the dynamic variation in the inertia weight will facilitate the algorithm to keep a good balance between exploration and exploitation searches. The numerical experiments on different case studies have shown that the proposed PSO obtains the best results among the tested algorithms.

Abstract:A new bio-inspired algorithm, namely Bird Swarm Algorithm (BSA), is proposed for solving optimisation applications. BSA is based on the swarm intelligence extracted from the social behaviours and social interactions in bird swarms. Birds mainly have three kinds of behaviours: foraging behaviour, vigilance behaviour and flight behaviour. Birds may forage for food and escape from the predators by the social interactions to obtain a high chance of survival. By modelling these social behaviours, social interactions and the related swarm intelligence, four search strategies associated with five simplified rules are formulated in BSA. Simulations and comparisons based on eighteen benchmark problems demonstrate the effectiveness, superiority and stability of BSA. Some proposals for future research about BSA are also discussed.

Abstract:In a traditional evolutionary algorithm, the selection, crossover, and mutation are commonly used to evolve its searching procedure. For a robust and feasible evolutionary algorithm, these operators must be properly designed. Nevertheless, the proper design of these operators is not an easy task. On the other hand, it would be preferable for an algorithm that the previously explored solutions can be used to help the creation of new solutions or states. In this point of view, evolutionary methods using probabilistic models are deserved further attentions. The Population-Based Incremental Learning (PBIL) algorithm can be categorized into this type of algorithms. The PBIL is initially developed as a binary coded algorithm, and is awkward to some extent in applying to solve a design problem with continuous variables. In this respect, an adaptive continuous PBIL is introduced. In the newly improved PBIL method, an automatic mechanism is presented to update the probability matrix, which is adopted to stochastically produce the offspring, to obtain a balance among the fast convergence and the high quality final solution. Two examples are numerically solved by the introduced PBIL method to highlight its advantages and deficiencies.

Abstract:Bat Algorithm (BA) is a nature-inspired metaheuristic search algorithm designed to efficiently explore complex problem spaces and find near-optimal solutions. The algorithm is inspired by the echolocation behavior of bats, which acts as a signal system to estimate the distance and hunt prey. Although the BA has proven effective for various optimization problems, it exhibits limited exploration ability and susceptibility to local optima. The algorithm updates velocities and positions based on the current global best solution, causing all agents to converge towards a specific location, potentially leading to local optima issues in optimization problems. On this premise, this paper proposes the Modified Bat Algorithm (MBA) as an enhancement to address the local optima limitation observed in the original BA. MBA incorporates the frequency and velocity of the current best solution, enhancing convergence speed to the optimal solution and preventing local optima entrapment. While the original BA faces diversity issues, both the original BA and MBA are introduced. To assess MBAs performance, three sets of test functions (classical benchmark functions, CEC2005, and CEC2019) are employed, with results compared to those of the original BA, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Dragonfly Algorithm (DA). The outcomes demonstrate the MBAs significant superiority over other algorithms. Additionally, MBA successfully addresses a real-world assignment problem (call center problem), traditionally solved using linear programming methods, with satisfactory results.

Abstract:The biogeography-based optimization (BBO) algorithm is known for its simplicity and low computational overhead, but it often struggles with falling into local optima and slow convergence speed. Against this background, this work presents a multi-strategy enhanced BBO variant, named MSBBO. Firstly, the example chasing strategy is proposed to eliminate the destruction of the inferior solutions to superior solutions. Secondly, the heuristic crossover strategy is designed to enhance the search ability of the population. Finally, the prey search–attack strategy is used to balance the exploration and exploitation. To verify the performance of MSBBO, we compare it with standard BBO, seven BBO variants (PRBBO, BBOSB, HGBBO, FABBO, BLEHO, MPBBO and BBOIMAM) and seven meta-heuristic algorithms (GWO, WOA, SSA, ChOA, MPA, GJO and BWO) on multiple dimensions of 24 benchmark functions. It concludes that MSBBO significantly outperforms all competitors both on convergence accuracy, speed and stability, and MSBBO basically converges to the same results on 10,000 dimensions as on 1000 dimensions. Further, MSBBO is applied to six real-world engineering design problems. The experimental results show that our work is still more competitive than other latest optimization techniques (COA, EDO, OMA, SHO and SCSO) on constrained optimization problems.

Abstract:Population-based search algorithms (PBSAs), including swarm intelligence algorithms (SIAs) and evolutionary algorithms (EAs), are competitive alternatives for solving complex optimization problems and they have been widely applied to real-world optimization problems in different fields. In this study, a novel population-based across neighbourhood search (ANS) is proposed for numerical optimization. ANS is motivated by two straightforward assumptions and three important issues raised in improving and designing efficient PBSAs. In ANS, a group of individuals collaboratively search the solution space for an optimal solution of the optimization problem considered. A collection of superior solutions found by individuals so far is maintained and updated dynamically. At each generation, an individual directly searches across the neighbourhoods of multiple superior solutions with the guidance of a Gaussian distribution. This search manner is referred to as across neighbourhood search. The characteristics of ANS are discussed and the concept comparisons with other PBSAs are given. The principle behind ANS is simple. Moreover, ANS is easy for implementation and application with three parameters being required to tune. Extensive experiments on 18 benchmark optimization functions of different types show that ANS has well balanced exploration and exploitation capabilities and performs competitively compared with many efficient PBSAs (Related Matlab codes used in the experiments are available from http://guohuawunudt.gotoip2.com/publications.html).
Autonomous Parameter Balance in Population-Based Approaches: A Self-Adaptive Learning-Based Strategy

Abstract:Population-based metaheuristics can be seen as a set of agents that smartly explore the space of solutions of a given optimization problem. These agents are commonly governed by movement operators that decide how the exploration is driven. Although metaheuristics have successfully been used for more than 20 years, performing rapid and high-quality parameter control is still a main concern. For instance, deciding the proper population size yielding a good balance between quality of results and computing time is constantly a hard task, even more so in the presence of an unexplored optimization problem. In this paper, we propose a self-adaptive strategy based on the on-line population balance, which aims for improvements in the performance and search process on population-based algorithms. The design behind the proposed approach relies on three different components. Firstly, an optimization-based component which defines all metaheuristic tasks related to carry out the resolution of the optimization problems. Secondly, a learning-based component focused on transforming dynamic data into knowledge in order to influence the search in the solution space. Thirdly, a probabilistic-based selector component is designed to dynamically adjust the population. We illustrate an extensive experimental process on large instance sets from three well-known discrete optimization problems: Manufacturing Cell Design Problem, Set covering Problem, and Multidimensional Knapsack Problem. The proposed approach is able to compete against classic, autonomous, as well as IRace-tuned metaheuristics, yielding interesting results and potential future work regarding dynamically adjusting the number of solutions interacting on different times within the search process.

Abstract:The resolution of an optimization issue is a topic studied and debated by academics from a wide variety of areas continuously. Without an optimal solution, a lot of time and resources are likely to be wasted, and the issue will remain unsolved in the worst-case scenario. Due to these concerns, researchers are increasingly resorting to the development of robust meta-heuristic optimization techniques to improve current methods while creating new population-based approaches capable of exploring the required feature space. Therefore, biogeography-based optimization (BBO) is proposed in this paper, which is impacted by species' movement and emigration across islands in quest of better favorable environments. The BBO is indeed a population-based optimization approach used to solve complicated optimization issues. However, due to the nature of its operators, this technique might become stuck in sub-optimal solutions, which slows down convergence and increases the amount of computing time needed to find optimal solutions. In order to address these issues, this research proposes a BBO version that incorporates a ranked-based strategy (RBS), an exponential dynamic Brownian random differential (EBD) mechanism, and a successful adaptive random differential mutation (SarDM) mechanism to find a more effective solution in the feasible region. RBBO is the name given to the suggested approach. It has been evaluated for addressing four standard engineering problems with restrictions and 23 benchmark functions (seven unimodal, eight multimodal, and ten composite functions). The experimental findings and evaluations show that the sug-gested technique outperforms the conventional BBO's efficiency and accuracy. In the case of engineering problems, for instance, the four-reservoir problem, the proposed RBBO can provide superior results in terms of the average objective function (308.71) and standard deviation (0.16) over 30 different runs compared with the other optimization methods. We expect the community to use the suggested BBO-based technique to solve more challenging tasks.

Abstract:Abstract Simulated annealing (SA) proved its success as a single-state optimization search algorithm for both discrete and continuous problems. On the contrary, cuckoo search (CS) is one of the well-known population-based search algorithms that could be used for optimizing some problems with continuous domains. This paper provides a hybrid algorithm using the CS and SA algorithms. The main goal behind our hybridization is to improve the solutions generated by CS using SA to explore the search space in an efficient manner. More precisely, we introduce four variations of the proposed hybrid algorithm. The proposed variations together with the original CS and SA algorithms were evaluated and compared using 10 well-known benchmark functions. The experimental results show that three variations of the proposed algorithm provide a major performance enhancement in terms of best solutions and running time when compared to CS and SA as stand-alone algorithms, whereas the other variation provides a minor enhancement. Moreover, the experimental results show that the proposed hybrid algorithms also outperform some well-known optimization algorithms.

Abstract:Salp swarm algorithm (SSA) is a well-established population-based optimizer that exhibits strong exploration ability, but slow convergence and poor exploitation capability. In this paper, an endeavor is made to enhance the performance of the basic SSA. The new upgraded version of SSA named as "adaptive strategy-based SSA (ABSSA) algorithm" are proposed in this paper. First, the exploratory scope and food source navigating commands of SSA are enriched using the inertia weight and boosted global best-guided mechanism. Next, a novel velocity clamping strategy is designed to efficiently stabilize the balance between the exploration and exploitation operations. In addition, an adaptive conversion parameter tactic is designed to modify the position update equation to effectively intensify the local exploitation competency and solution accuracy. The effectiveness of the proposed ABSSA algorithm is verified by a series of problems, including 23 classical benchmark functions, 29 complex optimization problems from CEC 2017, and five engineering design tasks. The experimental results show that the developed ABSSA approach performs significantly better than the standard SSA and other competitors. Moreover, ABSSA is implemented to handle path planning and obstacle avoidance (PPOA) tasks in autonomous mobile robots and compared with some swarm intelligent approach-based path planners. The experimental results indicate that the ABSSA-based PPOA method is a reliable path planning algorithm.
