Abstract:Eating disorders, such as binge eating disorder, are commonly associated with difficulties with emotion regulation and mental-health complications. However, the relationship between eating-disorder symptoms, difficulties with emotion regulation, and mental health in people with binge eating disorder is unclear. Thus, we investigated associations between eating-disorder symptoms, difficulties with emotion regulation, and mental health in 119 adults with binge eating disorder. Participants were assessed with the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire, Loss of Control over Eating Scale, Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale, Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale, and the 12-Item Short Form Survey at the pre-treatment phase of a randomized controlled trial. Structural-equation-modelling path analysis was used to investigate relationships between variables. We found that (1) eating-disorder behaviors had a direct association with depression, anxiety, and stress; (2) depression, psychological stress, difficulties with emotion regulation, and eating-disorder psychopathology had a direct association with mental-health-related quality of life; and (3) eating-disorder psychopathology/behaviors and stress had a direct association with difficulties with emotion regulation. Our findings show that depression, stress, difficulties with emotion regulation, and eating-disorder psychopathology were related in important ways to mental-health complications in people with binge eating disorder.
Growth Kinetics and in Vitro Aging of Mesenchymal Stem Cells Isolated From Rat Adipose Versus Bone Marrow Tissues

Abstract:Objective- To investigate and compare growth potential as well as aging of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from rat bone marrow tissue and adipose tissue (AT) occurred at epicardial and epididymal regions. Design- Experimental study. Animals- 10 Wistar Rats. Procedures- Rat MSCs occurred at bone marrow and epicardial and epididymal AT were isolated and culture expanded through several successive passages. Differentiation potential along bone, cartilage and adipose cell lineages was used to verify MSC identity of the isolated cells, and then the cells were comparatively investigated in terms of their colonogenic ability, population doubling time and growth curve characteristics. Furthermore, the number of senescent cells at different passages was quantified using senescent- associated (SA) s galactosidase staining method. Results- MSCs from both AT appeared to have more proliferation capacity in culture than those from bone marrow since they exhibited significantly more colony number and shorter PDT value (P<0.05). Epicardial AT-MSCs indicated even more significant proliferation capacity than their epididymal counterparts. With respect to cell aging, marrow-MSCs cultures indicated higher percentages of senescent cells than AT-MSCs (P<0.05). Although the percentages of senescent cells in epididmal AT-MSCs were higher than epicardial AT- MSCs but the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion and Clinical Relevance- Taken together we concluded that rat epicardial AT- MSCs could be appropriate cells for experimental and preclinical settings since they possess more expansion rate and less percentages of senescent cells in culture.
Emotional Eating and Uncontrolled Eating as Risk Predictors for Disordered Eating Attitudes in Candidates for Bariatric Surgery Treated at a Public Hospital in the Amazon

Abstract:This study analyzes the eating behavior and factors associated with the presence of disordered eating attitudes in patients undergoing bariatric surgery. It is a cross-sectional, descriptive, and analytical study conducted at a hospital in the Amazon region of Brazil. The Disordered Eating Attitude Scale reduced version (DEAS-s) was used to assess the risk of eating disorders and the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ-R21) was used to characterize eating behavior. A total of 205 patients participated, with a mean age of 37.5 ± 8.6 years. The majority of participants were female (93.7%; p < 0.001), and the mean BMI was 45.3 ± 6.7 kg/m2. It was found that cognitive restraint had the highest mean (52.6 ± 19.9; p < 0.001). As for the DEAS-s, the question with the highest mean response was "spending one or more days without eating or consuming only liquids to lose weight" (2.80 ± 1.99). Female participants had a higher score for emotional eating (p = 0.016). Disordered eating attitudes showed a correlation with emotional eating and uncontrolled eating. These results suggest that candidates for bariatric surgery may have susceptibility to eating disorders. The importance of a multidisciplinary team conducting monitoring during the preoperative period is highlighted.

Direct and indirect associations of experience of racial discrimination, dietary patterns and obesity in adults from southern Brazil

Abstract:Objective: to analyze the direct and indirect associations of experience of racial discrimination on dietary patterns, obesity, and abdominal obesity. Design: cross-sectional population-based study. The main exposure was self-reported experiences of racial discrimination (Experiences of Discrimination scale). The mediator variables were the dietary patterns (DP): healthy, traditional Brazilian, sugar and carbohydrates, and fast food. The outcomes were obesity (body mass index ≥30 kg/m 2 ), and abdominal obesity (waist circumference ≥ 88 cm for women; ≥ 102 cm for men). Structural equation modeling was applied. Setting: Porto Alegre, Brazil Participants: 400 adults aged between 20 and 70 years. Results: the mean age of participants was 47.2 years (SD = 13.9), and 75% were women. Experiencing racial discrimination had a positive direct effect on obesity (Healthy DP: β= 0.153, p<0.05; Brazilian DP: β= 0.156, p<0.05; Sugar and Carbohydrates DP: β= 0.156, p<0.05; and Fast-food DP: β= 0.153, p<0.05) and abdominal obesity (Healthy DP: β= 0.206, p<0.01; Brazilian DP: β= 0.210, p<0.01; Sugar and Carbohydrates DP: β= 0.204, p<0.01; and Fast-food DP: β= 0.204, p<0.01). The experience of racial discrimination did not have a direct effect on dietary patterns, nor did it exert an indirect effect on obesity and abdominal obesity through any dietary pattern. Conclusions: a higher experience of racial discrimination is associated with obesity and abdominal obesity, independent of diet.

The role of stress in the association among food insecurity, eating disorder pathology, and binge eating-related appetitive traits

Abstract:Purpose: Growing literature demonstrates a positive association between food insecurity (FI) and eating disorder pathology. Additionally, FI has been associated with two appetitive traits strongly linked to binge eating, food responsiveness and emotional overeating. However, little research has investigated factors that might help to explain these associations. One hypothesis is that experiencing FI may increase stress, and that eating disorder pathology, particularly binge eating-related phenotypes, may serve as a coping strategy. This study explores stress as a potential mechanism in the association between FI and general eating disorder pathology, as well as two appetitive traits strongly associated with binge eating (food responsiveness and emotional overeating). Methods: Cis-gender women (N = 634) completed online questionnaires assessing FI, stress, eating disorder pathology (measured via the total score on the Short Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire), and binge eating-related appetitive traits (measured via the Adult Eating Behavior Questionnaire). Cross-sectional indirect effects analyses with a 1000-sample bootstrap were used to test pathways among FI, stress, and eating-related constructs. Results: FI was significantly associated with eating disorder pathology and associated appetitive traits (ps < 0.001). Stress explained a significant proportion of the correlation between FI and each eating-related construct. Conclusions: Our findings extend prior research on the relationships between FI, eating disorder pathology, and binge eating-related appetitive traits to provide preliminary evidence that stress may act as an underlying mechanism. Future studies should use longitudinal designs to assess the prospective relationships among these constructs.

Abstract:Binge eating (BE) is a significant public health concern due to its prevalence and impact on mental and physical health. While research has suggested both negative affect and appetitive traits are associated with BE, few studies have investigated these constructs concurrently. Structural equation modeling (SEM) evaluated relationships between negative affect, reward-related appetitive traits, and BE among 293 adults with overweight or obesity (OW/OB) seeking treatment for BE, overeating, and weight management (m age = 46.6; m body mass index[BMI] = 34.5; 81.2 % female; 20.1 % Latinx, 60.8 % White non-Latinx). BE was related to negative affect ( β = 0.53; p < 0.01) and appetitive traits ( β = 1.53; p < 0.001). Negative affect and appetitive traits were related to one another ( r = 0.42; p < 0.001), and the full model accounted for 77 % of the variance in BE. In an exploratory follow-up analysis, multigroup SEM evaluated the above relationships in models stratified by sex. Exploratory findings demonstrated both negative affect and appetitive traits were related to BE across sex, particularly when examining BE cognitions and behaviors. However, relationships in men depended upon BE assessment tool. These findings highlight that both negative affect and appetitive traits are related to BE, and jointly may represent significant risk and maintenance factors, particularly in adults with OW/OB. Our findings also highlight the importance of future investigation of sex differences in BE and the potential impact of assessment method.

Relationships Between Three Eating Behaviors and Nine Motives for Food Choices Among Brazilian Adults: A Structural Equation Model

Abstract:We examined the relationships between three eating behaviors and nine motives underlying food choices made by Brazilian adults. Using participant responses to the short version of the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire and the Food Choice Questionnaire, we investigated eating behaviors (cognitive restriction, uncontrolled eating, and emotional eating) and motives for food choices (health, mood, convenience, sensory appeal, natural content, price, weight control, familiarity, and ethical concern). We used a structural equation model to test relationship pathways (β), with eating behaviors as independent variables and motives for food choices as dependent variables. Participants were 1297 individuals (69.5% female) with a mean age of 25.0 years (SD = 5.8). We confirmed the validity and reliability of the questionnaires in this sample. Restrictive eating behavior was significantly related to motives of health (β = .415), mood (β = .127), natural content (β = .364), weight control (β = .681), and ethical concern (β = .161). Emotional eating behavior was related to motives of mood (β = .277), health (β = -.137), and natural content (β = -.136). Uncontrolled eating behavior was related to motives of convenience (β = .226), sensory appeal (β = .121), price (β = .153), and familiarity (β = .090). We believe these findings can now help design future research and clinical interventions for managing people's risky eating behaviors and promoting beneficial food choices.
Stress-induced alterations in HPA-axis reactivity and mesolimbic reward activation in individuals with emotional eating

Abstract:Background: Emotional eating has emerged as a contributing factor to overeating, potentially leading to obesity or disordered eating behaviors. However, the underlying biological mechanisms related to emotional eating remain unclear. The present study examined emotional, hormonal, and neural alterations elicited by an acute laboratory stressor in individuals with and without emotional eating. Methods: Emotional (n = 13) and non-emotional eaters (n = 15) completed two main study visits, one week apart: one visit included a Stress version and the other a No-stress version of the Maastricht Acute Stress Task (MAST). Immediately pre- and post-MAST, blood was drawn for serum cortisol and participants rated their anxiety level. After the MAST, participants completed a Food Incentive Delay (FID) task during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), followed by an ad libitum snack period. Results: Emotional eaters exhibited elevated anxiety (p = 0.037) and cortisol (p = 0.001) in response to the Stress MAST. There were no changes in anxiety or cortisol among non-emotional eaters in response to the Stress MAST or in either group in response to the No-stress MAST. In response to the Stress MAST, emotional eaters exhibited reduced activation during anticipation of food reward in mesolimbic reward regions (caudate: p = 0.014, nucleus accumbens: p = 0.022, putamen: p = 0.013), compared to non-emotional eaters. Groups did not differ in snack consumption. Conclusions: These data indicate disrupted neuroendocrine and neural responsivity to psychosocial stress amongst otherwise-healthy emotional eaters, who demonstrated hyperactive HPA-axis response coupled with hypoactivation in reward circuitry. Differential responsivity to stress may represent a risk factor in the development of maladaptive eating behaviors.

Abstract:Abstract Purpose Binge eating disorder (BED), bulimia nervosa (BN) and recurrent binge eating (RBE) are binge eating spectrum conditions causing a significant impact in individual’s health and functioning. Information regarding those conditions came mostly from high-income countries. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of DSM-5 BED, BN and RBE and correlates in a representative sample from a metropolitan area of a middle-income country. Methods The data were obtained from a cross-sectional population-based household survey in two stages in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Noninstitutionalized residents aged 18–60 years were assessed by lay interviewers using the Questionnaire of Eating and Weight Patterns-5 (QEWP-5). Positive cases and a paired sample screen-negative cases were reassessed by phone with the Eating Disorders Section of SCID-I-P (adapted for DSM-5). The data were collected from September 2019 to February 2020. Results Overall, 2297 individuals were interviewed. Prevalence of BED was 1.4%, BN 0.7%, RBE 6.2%. Psychiatric comorbidities, such as depression, anxiety and ADHD were significantly more prevalent in people with BED, BN and RBE than in people without these eating problems. Several medical conditions, when controlling for body mass index, were significantly more prevalent in people with BED, BN and RBE. People with BED and BN had marked impairments in work/school, social and family life, reduced mental and physical HRQoL and under half had sought treatment. Conclusion As in high income countries, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, BED, BN and RBE are prevalent conditions and are associated with elevated BMI, functional impairment, psychiatric and medical comorbidity and poorer HRQoL.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated various determinants of mental disorders. Several behavioral changes were observed given this increase, including harmful health consequences, such as excessive consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs). To assess this relationship, we investigated the meditational role of symptoms of mental disorders (anxiety and depression) in the association between stress resulting from social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic and the consumption of UPFs in 3884 Brazilian public employees in a supplementary study of the ELSA-Brasil study. Structural equation models (SEMs) were estimated to assess the direct and indirect effects mediated by symptoms of mental disorders. The results suggested a significant and positive mediational effect of the symptoms of mental disorders on the association between the stress resulting from social distancing and the consumption of UPFs. These findings contribute to informing the need for policies and early interventions in potentially stressful situations, with a focus on the promotion of mental health, and may thus help prevent or reduce the consumption of unhealthy foods.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Food insecurity stems from limited financial resources. Yet, paradoxically, food insecurity is associated with overeating and excess weight. One subcategory of overeating is binge eating, which includes eating an unusually large amount of food while feeling a concurrent sense of loss of control. Associations between binge-eating disorder and food insecurity are not known, yet this is important to examine because binge eating is associated with more severe mental and physical health problems than overeating or obesity alone.METHOD: Survey respondents (N = 1,250) were recruited online. Participants were categorized into study groups: healthy weight (HW), binge-eating disorder (BED), and obesity (OB). Using HW as a reference group, hierarchical logistic regressions evaluated the extent to which low and very low food security were associated with BED and OB.RESULTS: Low food security and very low food security were both associated with increased likelihood of BED and OB group membership.CONCLUSIONS: Results highlight the need to devote resources towards policy revisions, preventative interventions, and psychiatric treatments aimed at decreasing the overall association of food insecurity with BED and obesity among low-income Americans.

Sexual orientation moderates the relationship between internalized weight bias and binge eating symptoms among adults pursuing bariatric surgery

Abstract:Background: Sexual minorities have higher rates of anxiety, depression, and binge eating compared to heterosexual peers. Internalized weight bias (IWB) is also higher for sexual minorities when compared to heterosexual peers. However, research has not examined whether the relationships between IWB and anxiety, depression, and binge eating differ among heterosexual and sexual minority adults pursuing bariatric surgery. Objectives: To examine whether sexual orientation (heterosexual or sexual minority) moderated the relationships between IWB and anxiety, depression, and binge eating among adults pursuing bariatric surgery. Setting: University hospital, United States METHODS: Participants included 811 adults who presented for bariatric surgery, 45 (5.5%) of which identified as a sexual minority. Self-reported data were collected as part of a standard preoperative psychological evaluation for surgical clearance. Three separate moderation models were run to test hypotheses. Results: Sexual orientation did not moderate the association of IWB with anxiety or depression. The IWB by sexual orientation interaction was significant for binge eating (F 1856) = 4.84, P = .03, R2 = .27 such that the association between IWB and binge eating was significantly stronger for sexual minority patients (b = .54, 95% confidence interval {CI} [.36, .70]), compared to heterosexual patients (b = .33, 95% CI [.30, .38]). Conclusions: Minority stress from identifying as a sexual minority may increase vulnerability to binge eating from IWB among bariatric candidates. Future research examining the directionality of the relationship between IWB and binge eating among sexual minorities is warranted.

Abstract:Objective Food addiction (FA) shows phenotypic and diagnostic overlap with eating disorders characterised by binge eating, though it is unknown how momentary processes driving binge‐eating symptoms differ by FA. The present study examined the possible moderating influence of FA severity on momentary mechanisms underlying binge‐eating symptomatology using ecological momentary assessment (EMA). Method Adults (N = 49, mean age = 34.9 ± 12.1, cis‐gender female = 77.1%) who met criteria for FA and/or binge‐eating disorder completed baseline measures including the Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS) followed by a 10‐day EMA protocol. Generalised linear mixed models assessed main effects of YFAS, momentary antecedents (affect, impulsivity, food cue exposure, appetite, and eating expectancies) and two‐way interactions between YFAS and within‐person antecedents. Results FA severity moderated momentary associations between food cue exposure and subsequent binge‐eating symptoms: the association was stronger among participants with lower but not higher YFAS scores. No other interactions were significant. Conclusions Some functional associations underlying binge‐eating symptoms vary based on individuals' level of FA symptoms. Future research to further understand how observed associations may differ amongst diverse populations and over course of illness may also inform future prevention and interventions.

Parental Binge Eating and Child Binge Eating and Weight-Control Behaviors: Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Findings From the EAT 2010-2018 Study

Abstract:Objective: In cross-sectional and retrospective research, parental binge eating is associated with their children's eating psychopathology. The current study extended the evidence by cross-sectionally and longitudinally examining the relation between parental binge eating and binge eating and weight-control behaviors in the next generation of their adolescent children and young adult children in a population-based sample. Methods: Adolescents (Time 1: M = 14.5, SD = 2.0 years) (n = 2367), followed into adulthood (Time 2: M = 22.1, SD = 2.0 years), and their parents (n = 3664) were enrolled in EAT 2010-2018 and Project F-EAT 2010. The current study examined parental binge eating, and child binge eating and weight-control behaviors. Adjusted models covaried for child gender, age, and race/ethnicity. Results: Approximately 7% of adolescents at Time 1 had at least one parent who reported binge eating with no differences by child's age, gender, or race/ethnicity. Having at least one parent experiencing binge eating at Time 1 (vs. not) was associated cross-sectionally with adolescent children's use of extreme weight-control behaviors (9.6% vs. 4.8%; Risk Difference [RD] = 4.9%) and associated longitudinally with binge eating during young adulthood (21.1% vs. 11.6%; RD = 9.5%). Other associations did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: Children of parents with binge eating appear to have elevated risk of extreme weight-control behaviors during adolescence and binge eating in young adulthood. Clinicians should assess whether eating psychopathology extends to other family members, and offer additional support to parents with binge eating. Further research is needed to identify risk factors in the children of parents with binge eating and to assess strategies for prevention.

Abstract:Objective: "Feeling fat", the somatic experience of being overweight not fully explained by objective body weight, is considered to be an eating pathology maintenance factor. The traditional clinical understanding of "feeling fat" is based on the body displacement hypothesis, which suggests that negative emotions are projected onto the body and experienced as "feeling fat" in lieu of adaptive emotion regulation. A more recent theory suggests that "feeling fat" occurs in response to thought-shape fusion (TSF), a cognitive distortion in response to the imagined consumption of perceived fattening food. The present experimental study compared the roles of these two proposed mechanisms of "feeling fat" using self-report and psychophysiological measures. Method: Eighty-two women (41 with binge eating, 41 control participants) self-reported "feeling fat" and had their heart rate variability (HRV), a physiological index of emotion regulation, measured before and after imagined inductions. Participants imagined either a personalized negative affective experience or consuming a preferred, so-called 'fattening' food. Results: The TSF induction increased self-reports of "feeling fat" among participants with binge eating but not among control women. The negative affect induction did not increase self-reported "feeling fat" in either group. HRV did not significantly change in response to either induction for either group. Discussion: TSF may be a more potent precursor to "feeling fat" than negative affect for individuals with binge eating. This may suggest new treatment directions, such as cognitive defusion from TSF when patients experience "feeling fat." The utility of HRV in monitoring "feeling fat" is questionable.
Do Emotion Dysregulation, Alexithymia and Personality Dimensions Explain the Association Between Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Binge Eating Among Bariatric Surgery Candidates?

Abstract:Background: Addictive-like eating and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are both common among persons seeking treatment for severe obesity. Given that ADHD and addictive-like eating, especially binge eating (BE) and food addiction (FA), are both strongly associated with personality dimensions and emotion dysregulation, it is possible emotional and personality characteristics contribute to the link between addictive-like eating behaviors and ADHD in people with severe obesity. This study aimed to investigate the psychological factors associated with BE and FA in bariatric surgery candidates, and to explore the mediational role of emotional factors (emotion dysregulation and alexithymia) and personality dimensions in the association between ADHD and BE. Method: Two hundred and eighty-two ( n = 282) bariatric surgery candidates were recruited during the systematic preoperative psychiatric assessment (University Hospital of Tours, France). We assessed significant BE (Binge Eating Scale), probable adult ADHD (Wender Utah Render Scale and Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale), FA (Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0, YFAS 2.0), emotion dysregulation (Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale-16), alexithymia (Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20) and personality dimensions (Big Five Inventory). Mediation analyses were performed using the PROCESS macro for IBM SPSS Statistics 22. Results: Prevalence of probable adult ADHD, significant BE and FA were 8.2, 19.1, and 26.6%, respectively. Participants who screened positive for addictive-like eating showed higher prevalence of probable adult ADHD, as well as higher scores on adult and childhood ADHD symptoms. They also reported lower conscientiousness, but higher emotion dysregulation, higher alexithymia, and higher neuroticism. Only BE (as opposed to FA) was also associated with lower scores on agreeableness and openness. Analysis of the association between adult ADHD and BE suggests that emotion dysregulation, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and neuroticism are total mediators and alexithymia a partial mediator. Conclusion: Our findings suggest a significant association between ADHD and addictive-like eating among bariatric surgery candidates, and also suggest a significant role of emotion dysregulation and personality dimensions in this association. For individuals with ADHD and obesity, eating may be a way to cope with negative emotions, potentially increasing the risk for addictive-like eating behavior.

Etiological model of disordered eating behaviors in Brazilian adolescent girls

Abstract:The objective was to construct an etiological model of disordered eating behaviors in Brazilian adolescent girls. A total of 1,358 adolescent girls from four cities participated. The study used psychometric scales to assess disordered eating behaviors, body dissatisfaction, media pressure, self-esteem, mood, depressive symptoms, and perfectionism. Weight, height, and skinfolds were measured to calculate body mass index (BMI) and percent body fat (%F). Structural equation modeling explained 76% of variance in disordered eating behaviors (F(9, 1,351) = 74.50; p = 0.001). The findings indicate that body dissatisfaction mediated the relationship between media pressures, self-esteem, mood, BMI, %F, and disordered eating behaviors (F(9, 1,351) = 59.89; p = 0.001). Although depressive symptoms were not related to body dissatisfaction, the model indicated a direct relationship with disordered eating behaviors (F(2, 1,356) = 23.98; p = 0.001). In conclusion, only perfectionism failed to fit the etiological model of disordered eating behaviors in Brazilian adolescent girls.
