Abstract:A large magnetocaloric effect (MCE) has been achieved in a rare-earth-free CoMnSb alloy at low magnetic field and intermediate temperature. It is interesting to note that a relatively large magnetic entropy change ∣ΔSM∣ of 2.06J∕kgK with ΔH=0.9T was obtained around 471K. Arrott plots at various temperatures reveal that a second order magnetic transformation occurs near the Curie temperature. The origin of the large ΔSM under the conditions of intermediate temperature and low field is attributed to the magnetic transition from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic. These results suggest that CoMnSb alloy is a good candidate for large MCE when being utilized in intermediate temperature refrigeration systems for some special cases. This investigation demonstrates that some transition metal alloys with large magnetic moments may exhibit large MCE, which extends the region for exploring useful MCE materials.

Abstract:Magnetic refrigeration (MR) based on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) has been recognized as an environmentally benign and energy-efficient cooling technology. Exploring suitable magnetocaloric materials is a crucial prerequisite for practical MR applications. We have herein provided a systematic investigation of the crystal structure, microstructure, electronic structure, magnetic phase transition, critical behavior, and MCE of the GdCoC compound featuring excellent cryogenic magnetocaloric performance by means of experimental determination and theoretical calculation. The GdCoC compound is crystallized in a simple layered tetragonal crystal structure with a P 4 2 / mmc space group and undergoes two successive ferromagnetic (FM) transitions along with a low-temperature weak antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition under low magnetic fields. Density functional theory calculations confirms the FM coupling of the Gd and Co intra-sublattice interactions, whereas AFM coupling for their inter-sublattice interaction. The magnetic transitions are merged in to one under high magnetic fields which has been confirmed to be second-order type and its critical behavior can be understood in the framework of tri-critical mean-field model, whereas the low-temperature weak AFM transition is belonging to the first-order type. The excellent magnetocaloric performance of the GdCoC compound was identified by the parameters of magnetic entropy change, adiabatic temperature change, temperature-averaged entropy change, relative cooling power, and refrigerant capacity, which are superior to most of the well-known magnetocaloric materials with similar working temperatures, making it attractive for practical cryogenic MR applications.

[Effect of epigallocatechin-3-gallate on the activity of alpha-glucosidase in vitro].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) on the activity of alpha-glucosidase derived from bakers' yeast and small intestinal mucosa of Wistar rats, in order to establish an evaluation system for the activity of alpha-glucosidase inhibitor. METHODS alpha-glucosidase was prepared from the bakers' yeast and the small intestinal mucosa of Wistar rats. The inhibitory activity of EGCG on alpha-glucosidase was based on the concentration of glucose in the reaction system. RESULTS EGCG was shown to be an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor. IC50 was 0.150 mg/ml and 0.837 mg/ml for alpha-glucosidase derived from bakers' yeast and small intestinal mucosa respectively. CONCLUSION The establishment of an in vitro evaluation system for AGI activity is conductive for screening alpha-glucosidase inhibitory substance. The AGI activity of EGCG is strong in vitro.
Multicaloric Cryocooling Using Heavy Rare-Earth Free La(Fe,Si)13-Based Compounds

Abstract:The transition toward a carbon-neutral society based on renewable energies goes hand in hand with the availability of energy-efficient technologies. Magnetocaloric cooling is a very promising refrigeration technology to fulfill this role regarding cryogenic gas liquefaction. However, the current reliance on highly resource critical, heavy rare-earth-based compounds as magnetocaloric material makes global usage unsustainable. Here, we aim to mitigate this limitation through the utilization of a multicaloric cooling concept, which uses the external stimuli of isotropic pressure and magnetic field to tailor and induce magnetostructural phase transitions associated with large caloric effects. In this study, La0.7Ce0.3Fe11.6Si1.4 is used as a nontoxic, low-cost, low-criticality multiferroic material to explore the potential, challenges, and peculiarities of multicaloric cryocooling, achieving maximum isothermal entropy changes up to -28 J (kg K)-1 in the temperature range from 190 K down to 30 K. Thus, the multicaloric cooling approach offers an additional degree of freedom to tailor the phase transition properties and may lead to energy-efficient and environmentally friendly gas liquefaction based on designed-for-purpose, noncritical multiferroic materials.

Abstract:The magnetocaloriceffect is considered as an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly technique which can take cooling technology to the next level. Apart from its commercial application at room temperature, magnetic refrigeration is an up-and-coming solution for the cryogenic regime, especially as an alternative to He3 systems. Molecular magnets reveal advantageous features for ultra-low cooling which are competitive with intermetallic and lanthanide alloys. Here, we present a guide to the current status of magnetocaloric effect research of molecular magnets with a theoretical background focused on the inverse magnetocaloric effect and an overview of recent results and developments, including the rotating magnetocaloric effect.

Abstract:Magnetic refrigeration based on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is an environment-friendly, high-efficiency technology. It has been believed that a large MCE can be realized in the materials with a first-order magnetic transition (FOMT). Here, we found that TlFe3Te3 is a ferromagnetic metal with a first-order magnetic transition occurring at Curie temperature TC = 220 K. The maximum values of magnetic entropy change (Δ ) along the crystallographic c-axis, estimated from the magnetization data, reach to 5.9 J kg−1K−1 and 7.0 J kg−1 K−1 for the magnetic field changes, ΔH = 0–1 T and 0–2 T, respectively, which is significantly larger than that of MCE materials with a second-order magnetic transition (SOMT). Besides the large ΔSM, the low-level both thermal and field hysteresis make TlFe3Te3 compound an attractive candidate for magnetic refrigeration. Our findings should inspire the exploration of high performance new MCE materials.
Comparative study of magnetocaloric properties for Gd$^{3+}$ compounds with different frustrated lattice geometries

Abstract:As materials with suppressed ordering temperatures and enhanced ground state entropies, frustrated magnetic oxides are ideal candidates for cryogenic magnetocaloric refrigeration. While previous materials design has focused on tuning the magnetic moments, their interactions, and density of moments on the lattice, there has been relatively little attention to frustrated lattices. Prior theoretical work has shown that the magnetocaloric cooling rate at the saturation field is proportional to a macroscopic number of soft mode excitations that arise due to the classical ground state degeneracy. The number of these modes is directly determined by the geometry of the frustrating lattice. For corner-sharing geometries, the pyrochlore has 50\% more modes than the garnet and kagome lattices, whereas the edge-sharing \emph{fcc} has only a subextensive number of soft modes. Here, we study the role of soft modes in the magnetocaloric effect of four large-spin Gd$^{3+}$ ($L=0$, $J=S=7/2$) Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a kagome, garnet, pyrochlore, and \emph{fcc} lattice. By comparing measurements of the magnetic entropy change $\Delta S_m$ of these materials at fields up to $9$~T with predictions using mean-field theory and Monte Carlo simulations, we are able to understand the relative importance of spin correlations and quantization effects. We observe that tuning the value of the nearest neighbor coupling has a more dominant contribution to the magnetocaloric entropy change in the liquid-He cooling regime ($2$-$20$~K), rather than tuning the number of soft mode excitations. Our results inform future materials design in terms of dimensionality, degree of magnetic frustration, and lattice geometry.

Abstract:Magnetic cooling, a solid-state refrigeration technology based on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE), has attracted significant attention in space cooling due to its high energy-efficiency and environmental friendliness. Transition metal-based magnetocaloric materials (MCMs) with the merit of low-cost have emerged as promising candidates for efficient magnetic refrigeration applications. This review explores the intricate relationship between microstructure and multiple properties (e.g. magnetocaloric properties, mechanical stability, thermal conductivity, and functional reversibility) of these materials. A variety of microstructural manipulation approaches (e.g. crystallographic texture, precipitates, micropores, atomic-scale defects, size effect, and composites) are examined for their effects on the comprehensive performance of MCMs. We show that the microstructure design provides an effective tool to achieve excellent performance in multiple aspects, which may facilitate the commercialization of transition-metal based magnetocaloric materials.

Abstract:Over the last two decades, the research activities on magnetocalorics have been exponentially increased leading to the discovery of a wide category of materials including intermetallics and oxides. Even though the reported materials were found to show excellent magnetocaloric properties on laboratory scale, only a restricted family among them could be upscaled toward industrial levels and implemented as refrigerants in magnetic cooling devices. On the other hand, in the most of reported reviews, the magnetocaloric materials are usually discussed in terms of their adiabatic temperature and entropy changes, which is not enough to get more insight about their large scale applicability. In this review, not only the fundamental properties of recently reported magnetocaloric materials are discussed but also their thermodynamic performance in functional devices. The reviewed families particularly include Gd1-xRx alloys, LaFe13-xSix, MnFeP1-xAsx and R1-xAxMnO3 based compounds. Other relevant practical aspects such as mechanical stability, synthesis and corrosion issues are discussed. In addition, the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters that play a crucial role in the control of magnetic and magnetocaloric properties are regarded. In order to reproduce the needed magnetocaloric parameters, some practical models are proposed. Finally, the concepts of the rotating magnetocaloric effect and multilayered magnetocalorics are introduced.

Abstract:The discovery of the giant room temperature magnetocaloric effect (MCE) has renewed a remarkable research interest in the field of magnetocaloric materials at low temperatures. Among the various magnetocaloric refrigerants, rare-earth transition-metal oxides are one of the most promising candidates for low-temperature applications. In this study, the magnetic properties of rare-earth transition-metal oxides and their research status are reviewed. Three different systems are introduced in the review: (1) Manganates including RMnO3, RMn2O5 and R2Mn2O7 series; (2) Chromates including RCrO3 and RCrO4 series; (3) Vanadates including RVO3 and RVO4 series. The strong correlation of magnetocaloric effect of materials with crystal structure and magnetic phase transition is summarized. The origin of large MCE and potential applications of these materials are discussed. The purpose of the review is to provide a new idea for the selection, search and design of magnetic materials with enhanced MCE, and to promote the development of low-temperature magnetic refrigeration technology.

Abstract:Magnetic refrigeration (MR) research has been increasingly focused on targeting operation temperatures as low as 4.4–20 K, which is of strategic significance for liquid helium and hydrogen in various activities such as aerospace and highly advanced industries. To date, despite most research has been aimed at obtaining MR materials with large magnetic entropy change and adiabatic temperature change, the optimizing operation temperature to target the cooling range for helium-hydrogen liquefaction is highly desirable and valuable. Here, the significant enhancement in magnetocaloric effects (MCEs) and magnetic materials operating in the temperature range of 4.4–20 K are achieved. The magnetic properties and MCEs of HoCuAl are manipulated by substituting Er or Tm atoms with the lower de Gennes factor and various magnetic anisotropy. The maximum magnetic entropy change ((−Δ S M ) max ) and refrigeration capacity (RC) under 0–5 T for Ho 0.9 Er 0.1 CuAl increases by 25.8 % and 39.8 % respectively compared with HoCuAl compound. Additionally, the critical role of Curie temperature and magnetic anisotropy in the significant enhancement of MCEs is confirmed by the systematic macroscopic physical analysis and neutron diffraction measurements. The excellent MCEs, suitable operation temperature, and free of hysteresis loss demonstrate the promising application prospect in liquefaction of helium-hydrogen.

Abstract:The rare earth (RE) based alloys or compounds with excellent cryogenic magnetocaloric performance have received much research interest recently due to their potential applications of environmental friend magnetic refrigeration (MR) technology. Herein, three ternary RE-based carbide compounds RE2Cr2C3 (RE = Er, Ho, and Dy) were synthesized, an investigation of combined experimental and theoretical has been performed with regard to crystal structure, magnetic properties, magnetic phase transition as well as the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) and magnetocaloric performance. All the RE2Cr2C3 carbide compounds are crystallized in the orthorhombic type crystal structure (C12/m1 space group). The magnetic ground state was confirmed to be ferromagnetic (FM) for Er2Cr2C3, whereas antiferromagnetic (AFM) for Ho2Cr2C3 and Dy2Cr2C3 compounds by density functional theory calculation in addition to experimental observation. Large cryogenic MCE has been observed with the maximum isothermal magnetic entropy change (triangle S-M(max)) of 15.20, 13.98 and 9.04 J/kgK for Er2Cr2C, Ho2Cr2C3 and Dy2Cr2C3 under the magnetic field change (triangle H) of 0-5 T, respectively. Additionally, low field table-like MCE has been achieved in the Er2Cr2C3/Ho2Cr2C3 composites, which is benefit for active applications. These results assess and highlight the potential applicative interest of RE2Cr2C3 carbide compounds in the field of cryogenic MR.
Novel Mechanocaloric Materials for Solid-State Cooling Applications

Abstract:Solid-state cooling is an environmentally friendly and highly scalable technology that may solve most of the problems associated with current refrigerant methods. Solid-state cooling consists of applying external fields on caloric materials, which react thermally as a result of induced phase transformations. From an energy efficiency point of view, mechanocaloric compounds, in which the phase transitions of interest are driven by mechanical stresses, probably represent the most encouraging type of caloric materials. Conventional mechanocaloric materials like shape-memory alloys already display good cooling performances however in most cases they also present critical mechanical fatigue and hysteresis problems that limit their applicability. Finding new mechanocaloric materials and mechanisms able to overcome those problems while simultaneously rendering large temperature shifts, is necessary to further advance the field of solid-state cooling. In this article, we review novel families of mechanocaloric materials that in recent years have been shown to be specially promising in the aspects that conventional mechanocaloric materials are not, and which exhibit unconventional but significant caloric effects. We put an emphasis on elastocaloric materials, in which the targeted cooling spans are obtained through uniaxial stresses, since from an applied perspective these appear to be the most accomplished. Two different types of mechanocaloric materials emerge as particularly hopeful from our analysis, compounds that exhibit field-induced order disorder phase transitions involving either ions or molecules (fast-ion conductors and plastic crystals), and multiferroics in which the structural parameters are strongly coupled with polar and/or magnetic degrees of freedom (magnetic alloys and oxide perovskites).

Abstract:Magnetic refrigeration based on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of materials is a potential technique that has prominet advantages over the currently used gas compression-expansion technique in the sense of its high efficiency and environment friendship. In this article, our recent progress in explorating effective MCE materials is reviewed with the emphasis on the MCE in the LaFe13-xSix-based alloys with a first order magnetic transition discovered by us. These alloys show large entropy changes in a wide temperature range near room temperature. Effects of magnetic rare-earth doping, interstitial atom, and high pressure on the MCE have been systematically studied. Special issues such as appropriate approaches to determining the MCE associated with the first-order magnetic transition, the depression of magnetic and thermal hystereses, and the key factors determining the magnetic exchange in alloys of this kind are discussed. The applicability of the giant MCE materials to the magnetic refrigeration near ambient temperature is evaluated. A brief review of other materials with significant MCE is also presented in the article.

Abstract:The advent of caloric materials for magnetocaloric, elastocaloric, and electrocaloric cooling is changing the landscape of solid state cooling technologies with potentials for high-efficiency and environmentally-friendly residential and commercial cooling as well as heating applications. Given that caloric materials are ferroic materials which undergo first (or second) order transitions near room temperature, they open up intriguing possibilities for novel multiferroic devices with hitherto unexplored functionalities coupling their thermal properties with different fields (magnetic, electric, and stress) through composite configurations. Here, we demonstrate a composite magneto-elastocaloric effect with ultra-low magnetic field (0.16 T) in a compact geometry to generate a cooling temperature change as large as 4 K using a magnetostriction/superelastic alloy composite. Such composite systems can be used to circumvent shortcomings of existing technologies such as the need for high-stress actuation mechanism for elastocaloric materials and the high magnetic-field requirement of magnetocaloric materials, while enabling new applications such as compact remote cooling devices.

Abstract:It is herein unveiled the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of Gd4.5A0.5Si3O13 (A = K, Na, and Li) oxides. Notably, remarkable magnetocaloric performances in these oxides are realized, surpassing most of the benchmarked low‐temperature magnetocaloric materials. The findings position these Gd4.5A0.5Si3O13 oxides as exceptionally promising for practical magnetic cooling applications. The growing demand for solid‐state magnetic cooling, leveraging the magnetocaloric effect requires the discovery of high‐performing magnetocaloric materials (MCMs). Herein, a family of Gd‐containing MCMs is provided, specifically the Gd4.5A0.5Si3O13 (A = K, Na, and Li) oxides, which demonstratse exceptional low‐temperature magnetocaloric performance. Through comprehensive experimental investigations and theoretical calculations on their structural, electronic, and magnetic properties, it is unequivocally confirmed that all of them crystallize in a hexagonal apatite‐type structure (space group P63/m), exhibiting an antiferromagnetic semiconductor ground state with magnetic ordering temperatures below 1.8 K (typically ≈0.7 K for Gd4.5K0.5Si3O13). Furthermore, their remarkable maximum magnetic entropy change (−ΔSMmax) values of 31.85 and 58.22 J kgK−1 for Gd4.5K0.5Si3O13; 25.31 and 55.01 J kgK−1 for Gd4.5Na0.5Si3O13; and 25.15 and 55.77 J kgK−1 for Gd4.5Li0.5Si3O13, under the magnetic field changes of 0‐2 and 0‐5 T, respectively, surpass those of prominent low‐temperature MCMs, including the commercialized Gd3Ga5O12 (≈14.6 and 32.8 J kgK−1) paramagnetic salt. These findings in addition to their high environmental stability position these Gd4.5A0.5Si3O13 oxides as exceptionally promising for practical magnetic cooling applications.

Abstract:Thermal management technology based on the magnetocaloric effect offers several advantages over conventional gas compression cooling. The efficiency of magnetic cooling systems can be much higher than conventional gas based cooling technologies. Additionally, ozone layer depleting chemicals are not used and there is reduced noise and vibrations. Iron and manganese based magnetocaloric materials (MCM) are promising due to the challenges surrounding the use of conventional rare earth based MCM. We review the recent progress in the development of iron and manganese based MCM. The magnetic phase transitions, processing techniques, performance, as well as applications of these materials are discussed. Critical analysis to determine the critical exponents and phase transition behavior of these MCM, using modified Arrot plot, critical isotherm plots, the Kouvel-Fisher method, Landau theory and the Bean-Rodbell model, is also presented.

Abstract: Inoculation of large quantities of influenza virus into the allantoic cavity of embryonated hens' eggs has been shown to result in the production of “incomplete” haemagglutinating virus, which is incapable of further multiplication (1, 2) and which is smaller than the normal infective particle (3, 4). The work reported in this paper was undertaken to find out how many virus particles have to be taken up by a cell to result in the liberation of “incomplete” virus. Theoretical. The provisional hypothesis was adopted that the average yield of virus per cell is not related to the number of infective particles taken up by that cell until a critical number is reached beyond which there is complete suppression of yield. Since the production of “incomplete” virus occurs with large inocula, the critical number of infecting particles which suppresses haemagglutinin production must be greater than the number which suppresses the production of infective virus.

Abstract:Magnetocaloric materials exhibit temperature changes in response to changing magnetic fields, making them valuable for innovative cooling applications. This study showcases the investigation of design, synthesis, and modification of magnetocaloric materials, enabling them to achieve the desired magnetic ordering temperature of ≈20 K helpful to the liquefaction of hydrogen via magnetocaloric effect (MCE). Magnetocaloric materials have the ability to undergo temperature changes when subjected to varying magnetic fields. These materials are of interest due to their potential for innovative cooling applications. This review article summarizes materials that exhibit magnetic ordering within the temperature range required for gas liquefaction and explores their potential applications through the magnetocaloric effect (MCE). The gas liquefaction temperature range is typically assumed to be 20–77 K, however, this study specifically summarizes materials that have a transition temperature near to the hydrogen liquefaction temperature (≈20K). This review article aims to showcase ongoing research on magnetic materials for hydrogen liquefaction. Driven by the depletion of natural resources and environmental concerns, the search for environmentally sustainable fuels has intensified, making hydrogen a promising alternative. However, the liquefaction of hydrogen is highly energy‐intensive. The investigation focuses on identifying and understanding these materials and assessing their suitability for environmentally friendly and sustainable cooling technologies. By harnessing the magnetocaloric effect, these materials exhibit temperature changes in response to an applied magnetic field, offering advantages over traditional cooling methods that are 20–50% more efficient. The review aims to furnish researchers with essential information that can help modify magnetocaloric effect (MCE) materials, enabling them to achieve the desired magnetic ordering temperature conducive to the liquefaction of hydrogen.

Abstract:Planar dielectric EBG structures are formed by two-dimensional periodic dielectric inclusions in the dielectric slab. The main design parameters forming the frequencies of stopband are the shape of inclusions and their size, kind of slab it is formed in, lattice constant and both slab and inclusions permittivity constant. While there does not exist a general way how to determine the stopband existence of certain parameter setup analytically it must be simulated by use of numerical methods.
