Abstract:This paper presents the contributions of Professor Ffowcs Williams to the understanding high speed jet noise and its prediction. Additionally, his insights into the flow physics of high speed jets has led to practical ideas that guided many developments in the noise mitigation technologies. These two aspects are discussed with successful examples. 1. Study Description Two major problems associated with jet noise are: the reliable prediction of the acoustic far-field radiation from the jet in terms of the engine operating parameters and the design of suitable methods to reduce the noise by either reducing the total acoustic output of the jet or redistributing the acoustic energy. When considering high-speed jets, such as those generated by the engines of supersonic military aircraft, the existing knowledge provides little guidance in solving either of these problems. Many of the empirical formulae that predict the far-field noise with sufficient accuracy are generally confined to particular jet engines operating at specific conditions. It is therefore of interest to gather a comprehensive set of experimental data that will provide guidance in developing predictive methods that cover a wide range of jet operating conditions, especially at high speeds. In this paper we not only provide an expanded set of far-field noise data for heated supersonic jets, but also critically examine all the existing data to organize it in a suitable form to assist in developing reliable empirical formulae for far-field noise prediction. These empirical formulae are mostly based on the work Professor Ffowcs williams1 and its impact on prediction method will be presented. As second objective of the experimental investigations described here is aimed at developing noise mitigation schemes that have minimal impact on the engine thrust performance. Since the early days of jet noise research a vast knowledge of jet noise control techniques has been acquired. Some of the methods have contributed to reductions in jet noise. One such example is the subdivision of normal circular jet into numerous elements that would promote rapid mixing. Such an approach results in the reduction of sound pressure levels (SPL) for the high-energy, low frequency noise, accompanied with increasing SPL at higher frequencies. The practical problem of subdividing the jet, with minimum performance loss, lead to a number of concepts: nozzle exit profile variations through insertion of chutes or corrugations around the periphery, multi-lobed nozzle in conjunction with lined ejector suppressors etc. Although all the concepts had the same abovementioned objective (to produce maximum low frequency sound reduction), the aerodynamic per
