Abstract:We investigate the ground-state quantum entanglement in a one-dimensional incarnation of deconfined quantum critical point by making use of the finite-size density matrix renormalization group method. We observe two distinct behaviors of two-site entanglement calculated on odd and even bonds, and the difference O_{E} is shown to obey conventional scaling relations for order parameters. Accurate deconfined critical point and associated critical exponents are numerically extracted from finite-size scaling analyses. We further notice a close similarity between O_{E} and the valence-bond-solid order parameter and same observations are also obtained for quantum coherence and trace distance. Furthermore, the deconfined critical point is suggested to possess rich quantum entanglement other than the two-site entanglement from the residual entanglement perspective. Our work explores the critical characteristics of the one-dimensional deconfined quantum critical point from the quantum information aspect and provides insights for its ground-state entanglement structure.
Quantum Coherence of an Xy Spin Chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction and Quantum Phase Transition

Abstract:We investigate the quantum coherence of an XY spin chain with Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction using a quantum renormalization group-based method, and show that the relative entropy of coherence increases with Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction strength at zero temperature, as well as at finite temperature. We also study the quantum criticality of the system by making use of the relative entropy of coherence and violation of Bell inequality, and find that the first derivatives of the renormalized quantum coherence exhibit singularity near the critical point of the quantum phase transition. Finally, we explore the finite-size scaling behaviors of the derivatives of the quantum coherence at the critical point of the quantum phase transition, and obtain several universal finite-size scaling laws.
Equilibration of Topological Defects at the Deconfined Quantum Critical Point

Abstract:Deconfined quantum criticality (DQC) arises from fractionalization of quasi-particles and leads to fascinating behaviors beyond the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson (LGW) description of phase transitions. The unusual aspects of DQC in equilibrium also suggest exotic phenomena out of equilibrium, which are still largely unexplored. Here we study manifestations of DQC when driving (quantum annealing) a two-dimensional quantum magnet through a critical point separating antiferromagnetic and spontaneously dimerized ground states. Numerical simulations show that the celebrated Kibble-Zurek scaling (KZS) mechanism is inadequate for describing the annealing process. To explain our results, we introduce the concept of dual asymmetric KZS, where a deconfinement time enters in addition to the conventional relaxation time and the scaling also depends on the direction in which the system is driven through the critical point according to a duality principle connecting the topological defects in the two phases. These defects -- spinons in the dimerized phase and space-time hedgehogs in the antiferromagnetic phase -- require a much longer time scale for equilibration than the amplitude of the order parameter. Beyond the new insights into DQC, our scaling approach provides a new window into out-of-equilibrium criticality with multiple length and time scales.

Abstract:Deconfined quantum critical points (DQCPs) are proposed as unconventional second-order phase transitions beyond the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm. The nature and experimental realizations of DQCPs are crucial issues of importance. We illustrate the potential for DQCPs between the valence bond solid state and the antiferromagnetic phase to arise in optical lattices containing frustrated dipolar bosons subject to hard-core constraints. The emergence of DQCPs is comprehended through the fusion of two Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transitions. The DQCPs and the BKTs are confirmed by the finite-size scaling of ground-state fidelity susceptibilities. The numerical analysis reveals varying critical exponents of the correlation length in DQCPs and the logarithmic scaling in BKTs, respectively. This work offers a promising platform for realizing DQCPs and provides valuable insights into their nature within the framework of topological phase transitions.

Nonequilibrium dynamics in Dirac quantum criticality

Abstract:Quantum criticality within Dirac fermions harbors a plethora of exotic phenomena, attracting sustained attention in the past decades. Nevertheless, the nonequilibrium dynamics therein has rarely been studied. To fill in the gap, we explore the imaginary-time relaxation dynamics in a typical Dirac quantum criticality belonging to chiral Heisenberg universality class. Performing large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation, we unveil rich nonequilibrium critical phenomena from different initial states. Particularly, a new dynamic exponent characterizing the non-stationary evolution in the short-time state is determined as $\theta=-0.84(4)$, in sharp contrast with the prevalent belief that $\theta$ is positive as demonstrated in classical cases. Furthermore, we propose a universal dynamic scaling theory governing the fruitful nonequilibrium properties in Dirac quantum criticality. Armed with the scaling theory, we develop a new framework to investigate fermionic quantum criticality based on short-time dynamics, paving a promising avenue to fathoming quantum criticality in diverse fermionic systems with high efficiency.

Spin-Peierls instability of deconfined quantum critical points

Abstract:Deconfined quantum critical points (DQCPs) are putative phase transitions beyond the Landau paradigm with emergent fractionalized degrees of freedom. The original example of a DQCP is the spin-1/2 quantum antiferromagnet on the square lattice which features a second order transition between valence bond solid (VBS) and Néel order. The VBS order breaks a lattice symmetry, and the corresponding VBS order parameter may couple to lattice distortion modes (phonons) at appropriate momenta. We investigate a field-theoretic description of the DQCP in the presence of such a spin-lattice coupling. We show that treating phonons as classical lattice distortions leads to a relevant monopole-phonon interaction inducing an instability towards a distorted lattice by an analogous mechanism to the spin-Peierls instability in one dimension. Consequently, there is a breakdown of the DQCP which generally becomes a strong first-order transition. Taking into account the full quantum nature of the phonons, we argue that the continuous DQCP persists above a critical phonon frequency. Lastly, we comment on the connection to general gapless, deconfined gauge theories.

Abstract:From the perspective of low-lying excited states, we study the deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) in a one-dimensional quantum spin chain by means of the entanglement entropy and fidelity. Our results show that there is a close connection between the reconstruction of low-lying excitation spectra and the DQCP. The precise position of the critical point and its continuous nature is indicated by the singular behavior of the entanglement and fidelity of the first-excited state. Furthermore, compared with the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type phase transitions, which also go beyond the scope of Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm, we attempt to reveal the essence of different types of symmetries on both sides of the DQPT from different manifestations of entanglement singularity.

Abstract:We study the dynamical process of disentanglement of two qubits and two qutrits coupled to an Ising spin chain in a transverse field, which exhibits a quantum phase transition. We use the concurrence and negativity to quantify entanglement of two qubits and two qutrits, respectively. Explicit connections between the concurrence (negativity) and the decoherence factors are given for two initial states, the pure maximally entangled state and the mixed Werner state. We find that the concurrence and negativity decay exponentially with fourth power of time in the vicinity of the critical point of the environmental system.
The teaching from entanglement: 2D deconfined quantum critical points are not conformal

Abstract: The deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) -- the enigmatic incarnation of the quantum phase transition beyond the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm of symmetries and their spontaneous breaking -- has been proposed and actively pursued for more than two decades. Various 2D quantum many-body lattice models, both in spin/boson and fermion representations have been tested with the state-of-the-art numerical techniques and field-theoretical analyses, and yet, the conclusion is still controversial. Experimental realizations of DQCP in the quantum magnet SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ and superconducting quantum criticality in 2D material have either shown first order transition or intermediate phase. The tensions between the lattice scale details and the requirements from continuum limits, manifested in the form of the inconsistent critical scaling behavior and violations of generic conformal bootstrap bound, have not been resolved. Here we solve these decades-long controversies from the new and fundamental perspective of the quantum entanglement. We develop the incremental algorithm to compute the entanglement entropy at a fermionic DQCP with unprecedentedly accurate data and reveal the universal coefficient of the logarithmic correction therein is negative and at odds with positivity requirement of the conformal field theory. Together with results in other 2D DQCP lattice models (both in fermion and spin systems), our discoveries clearly demonstrate the 2D DQCP models are not conformal fixed point and naturally explain the experimental difficulties in finding DQCP therein. This marks the end of the beginning of unambiguous finding of the quantum phase transitions truely beyond the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm, since its suggestion two decades ago.

Abstract:The dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT), which is featured by the nonanalytic behavior of the Loschmidt rate function in the real time evolution, has attracted substantial attention as a valuable theoretical concept for characterizing nonequilibrium states of quantum matter. Although the link between the DQPT and many physical concepts has been established, a thorough understanding of this transition still calls for more studies. In this paper, from the perspective of the quantum steering ellipsoid (QSE), we investigate the DQPTs supported in a one-dimensional spin chain with a deconfined quantum critical point by using the global subspace expansion time-dependent variational principle algorithm. For the quench from the valence-bond-solid phase to the ferromagnetic phase, we find a clear correspondence between the vanishing of the QSE volume and the occurrence of the DQPT. For the quench in the opposite direction, however, the QSE exhibits a rather complicated behavior during the time evolution. We also calculate the quantum entanglement and quantum coherence in the quench processes to unveil the change of the quantum correlations encoded in the QSE picture. These findings could offer a fascinating possibility of revealing DQPTs in a geometrically discernible manner.
Deconfined quantum phase transition on the kagome lattice: Distinct velocities of spinon and string excitations

Abstract:Deconfined quantum phase transition (DQPT) provides an extraordinary possibility of the quantum phase transition beyond the Ginzburg-Landau paradigm, which is interwoven with numerous exotic phenomena of the strongly correlated quantum many-body system, e.g. fractional excitation, emergent symmetries, and gauge field. However, various candidates of DQPT have been demonstrated to be weakly first-order, and the conformal field theory (CFT) has to be altered into a non-unitary one. Here we numerically found two linear dispersions with different velocities in one of the few survivors of DQPT -- the extended hard-core Bose-Hubbard model on the Kagome lattice. Such counterintuitive results directly lead to the negation of possible emergent Lorentz symmetry, and the breakdown of conventional theory of DQPT. Furthermore, the snapshots of boson configuration hint that these two velocities may correspond to the dynamics of the fractional excitations and quantum strings, respectively. Our work will inspire the revisit of the theory of DQPT and benefit the field of quantum materials and quantum simulations.

Deconfined Quantum Criticality in the long-range, anisotropic Heisenberg Chain

Abstract:Deconfined quantum criticality describes continuous phase transitions that are not captured by the Landau-Ginzburg paradigm. Here, we investigate deconfined quantum critical points in the long-range, anisotropic Heisenberg chain. With matrix product state simulations, we show that the model undergoes a continuous phase transition from a valence bond solid to an antiferromagnet. We extract the critical exponents of the transition and connect them to an effective field theory obtained from bosonization techniques. We show that beyond stabilizing the valance bond order, the long-range interactions are irrelevant and the transition is well described by a double frequency sine-Gordon model. We propose how to realize and probe deconfined quantum criticality in our model with trapped-ion quantum simulators.

Abstract:We study the imaginary-time relaxation critical dynamics of the Neel-paramagnetic quantum phase transition in the two-dimensional (2D) dimerized S = 1/2 Heisenberg model. We focus on the scaling correction in the short-time region. A unified scaling form including both short-time and finite-size corrections is proposed. According to this full scaling form, improved short-imaginary-time scaling relations are obtained. We numerically verify the scaling form and the improved short-time scaling relations for different initial states using projector quantum Monte Carlo algorithm.

Deconfined quantum critical points in fermionic systems with spin-charge separation

Abstract:Deconfined quantum critical points are exotic transition points not predicted by the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson symmetry-breaking paradigm. They are associated to a one-point gap closing between distinct locally ordered phases, thus to a continuous phase transition. Because of this intrinsic criticality, at deconfined quantum critical points algebraic decay of all the correlation functions is expected. Here, we show that it is possible to go beyond this assumption. Specifically, we consider one dimensional interacting fermions where the phenomenon of spin-charge separation arises. We first explore the low energy regimes where a sine-Gordon Hamiltonian can provide accurate results. By means of a field theory approach we find that continuous phase transitions between different locally ordered phases can occur. As a consequence of the decoupled spin and charge degrees of freedom, we find that in two cases only one gap vanishes while the other remains finite. We then derive a microscopic model where such phase transitions take place. By performing a numerical analysis, we unambiguously find that deconfined quantum critical points can indeed be further characterized by the long-range order of a parity operator signaling the presence of a finite gap. Our results provide new interesting insights on the widely investigated topic of quantum phase transitions.

Probing Confinement Through Dynamical Quantum Phase Transitions: From Quantum Spin Models to Lattice Gauge Theories

Abstract:Confinement is an intriguing phenomenon prevalent in condensed matter and high-energy physics. Exploring its effect on the far-from-equilibrium criticality of quantum many-body systems is of great interest both from a fundamental and technological point of view. Here, we employ large-scale uniform matrix product state calculations to show that a qualitative change in the type of dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) accompanies the confinement-deconfinement transition in three paradigmatic models -- the power-law interacting quantum Ising chain, the two-dimensional quantum Ising model, and the spin-$S$ $\mathrm{U}(1)$ quantum link model. By tuning a confining parameter in these models, it is found that \textit{branch} (\textit{manifold}) DQPTs arise as a signature of (de)confinement. Whereas manifold DQPTs are associated with a sign change of the order parameter, their branch counterparts are not, but rather occur even when the order parameter exhibits considerably constrained dynamics. Our conclusions can be tested in modern quantum-simulation platforms, such as ion-trap setups and cold-atom experiments of gauge theories.

Finite-time Scaling beyond the Kibble-Zurek Prerequisite: Driven Critical Dynamics in Strongly Interacting Dirac Systems

Abstract:In conventional quantum critical point (QCP) characterized by order parameter fluctuations, the celebrated Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM) and finite-time scaling (FTS) theory provide universal descriptions of the driven critical dynamics. However, in strongly correlated fermionic systems where gapless fermions are usually present in vicinity of QCP, the driven dynamics has rarely been explored. In this Letter, we investigate the driven critical dynamics in two-dimensional Dirac systems, which harbor semimetal and Mott insulator phases separated by the QCP triggered by the interplay between fluctuations of gapless Dirac fermions and order-parameter bosons. By studying the evolution of physical quantities for different driving rates through large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation, we confirm that the driven dynamics is described by the FTS form. Accordingly, our results significantly generalize the KZM theory by relaxing its requirement for a gapped initial state to the system accommodating gapless Dirac fermionic excitation. Through successfully extending the KZM and FTS theory to Dirac QCP, our work not only brings new fundamental perspective into the nonequilibrium critical dynamics, but also provides a novel theoretical approach to fathom quantum critical properties in fermionic systems.

Stability of Quantum Critical Points in the Presence of Competing Orders

Abstract:We investigate the stability of Quantum Critical Points (QCPs) in the presence of two competing phases. These phases near QCPs are assumed to be either classical or quantum and assumed to repulsively interact via square-square interactions. We find that for any dynamical exponents and for any dimensionality strong enough interaction renders QCPs unstable, and drives transitions to become first order. We propose that this instability and the onset of first-order transitions lead to spatially inhomogeneous states in practical materials near putative QCPs. Our analysis also leads us to suggest that there is a breakdown of Conformal Field Theory (CFT) scaling in the Anti de Sitter models, and in fact these models contain first-order transitions in the strong coupling limit.

Pristine and Pseudo-gapped Boundaries of the Deconfined Quantum Critical Points

Abstract:Bulk topology and criticality can both lead to nontrivial boundary effects. Topological orders are often characterized by their robust edge states, while bulk critical points can have different boundary scalings governed by boundary conditions. The interplay between these two different boundary effects is an intriguing problem. The boundary of the deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) is the ideal platform for the interplay of the two boundary effects, as the DQCP is also an intrinsically gapless symmetry protected topological (igSPT) state. In this work we discuss the boundary of several analogues of the DQCP. We demonstrate that the fluctuation of the bulk order parameters and their various boundary conditions lead to a rich possibility of the edge states, including a "pseudogap" (or super power-law decay) behavior. We also discuss the quantum information perspective of our work, i.e. the implication of our results on DQCP under weak-measurement. Weak-measurement followed by post-selection can change the boundary condition at the temporal boundary in the path-integral representation of a density matrix, which will lead to different behaviors of the "strange correlator".

Abstract:Novel critical phenomena beyond the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm have been long sought after. Among many candidate scenarios, the deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) constitutes the most fascinating one, and its lattice model realization has been debated over the past two decades. Here we apply the spherical Landau level regularization upon the exact (2+1)D SO(5) non-linear sigma model with a topological term to study the potential DQCP therein. We perform density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulation with SU(2)$_\mathrm{spin}\times$U(1)$_\mathrm{charge}\times$U(1)$_\mathrm{angular-momentum}$ symmetries explicitly implemented. Using crossing point analysis for the critical properties of the DMRG data, accompanied by quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we accurately obtain the comprehensive phase diagram of the model and find various novel quantum phases, including Néel, ferromagnet (FM), valence bond solid (VBS), valley polarized (VP) states and a gapless quantum disordered phase occupying extended area of the phase diagram. The VBS-Disorder and Néel-Disorder transitions are continuous with non-Wilson-Fisher exponents. Our results show the VBS and Néel states are separated by either a weakly first-order transition or the disordered region with a multicritical point in between, thus opening up more interesting questions on the two-decade long debate on the nature of DQCP.

Quantum scaling of the spin lattice relaxation rate in the checkerboard $J$-$Q$ model

Abstract:Motivated by recent progress on the experimental realization of proximate deconfined quantum critical point in a frustrated quantum magnet, we study the low-energy spin dynamics of a related checkerboard $J$-$Q$ model by using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The ground state of this model undergoes a weakly first-order quantum phase transition with an emergent $O(4)$ symmetry between an antiferromagnetic state and a plaquette valence bond solid. The calculated spin lattice relaxation rate of nuclear magnetic resonance, $1/T_1$, exhibits distinct low-temperature behaviors depending on the ground states. With decreasing the temperature, $1/T_1$ rises up on the antiferromagnetic side, characterizing a crossover to the renormalized classical regime, whereas $1/T_1$ drops exponentially on the side of valence bond solid, reflecting the gap opening in the plaquette ordered phase. The extracted spin gap scales with the distance to the transition point as a power-law with an exponent $\phi\approx0.3$, consistent with the scaling ansatz $\phi=\nu z$ with $\nu\approx0.3$ and $z=1$. Near the quantum phase transition, the temperature dependent $1/T_1$ shows a broad crossover regime where a universal scaling $1/T_1\sim T^{\eta}$ with $\eta\approx0.6$ is found. Our results suggest a quantum scaling regime associated with the emergent enhanced symmetry near this first-order quantum phase transition.
