Abstract:Constructing a stable Cu-0/Cu2+ interface is critical for enhancing the C-C coupling during the process of CO2 electroreduction. However, the high-valence Cu species are unstable under the operating conditions. Herein, polyhedral-shaped CuO is coated with hydroxy-rich SiO2 nanoparticles (m-SiO2/CuO) to stabilize the Cu2+ species, enabling efficient CO2 reduction to the ethylene product. Significantly, the optimal m-SiO2/CuO catalyst exhibits an impressive Faradaic efficiency of 55.5 % and an industrial-level partial current density of 500 mA cm(-2) toward ethylene. Fourier transform infrared spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectra reveal that the strong interfacial interaction between CuO and hydroxy-rich SiO2 is conducive to stabilizing the Cu2+ species. In-situ characterizations reveal that the Cu-0/Cu2+ interface facilitates CO2 activation and the key intermediate *OCCHO, thus promoting the production of ethylene. This work paves the way for developing advanced electro-catalysts of producing ethylene.
Stabilizing Cu+ Species in Cu2O/CuO Catalyst via Carbon Intermediate Confinement for Selective CO2RR

Abstract:A facile confinement approach coupled with mixed‐valence‐state strategy is introduced to confine carbon intermediates, which subsequently cover the local catalyst surface and stabilize Cu+ species. As a result, the mixed‐valence‐state Cu2O/CuO catalysts yields multi‐carbon (C2+) products with a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 80.0 % at a C2+ partial current density of 320.0 mA cm−2 and shows superior stability exceeding 30 h in membrane electrode assembly (MEA) electrolyser. Copper oxide nanomaterials have been suggested to be efficient for highly selective multi‐carbon (C2+) production in CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), due to the introduction of surface Cu+ species from oxide catalysts. However, the Cu+ species on the catalyst surface are prone to being reduced to Cu0 under reductive conditions during CO2RR. Here, a network‐structured catalyst is developed consisting of ultrafine Cu2O/CuO nanoparticles that harbor an abundance of pores. This catalyst is synthesized via flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) method and engineered to confine carbon intermediates, which subsequently cover the local catalyst surface and stabilize Cu+ species. As a result, a C2+ products Faradaic efficiency (FE) of approximately 80.0% at a partial current density of 320.0 mA cm−2 is achieved, and a large C2+ to C1 ratio of ≈9.7. In situ XRD and XPS spectra are employed to reveal the indeed presence of Cu+ species on the catalyst surface during the CO2RR process, which extensively improves the adsorption of *CO intermediates and thus the C─C coupling reaction to form C2+ products.

Abstract:Cu is a promising electrocatalyst for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to produce high‐value C2+ products. Due to the fierce competition of the hydrogen evolution reaction, the slow diffusion of CO2, and the high energy barrier of the C‐C coupling reaction, it is still challenging to achieve high activity and high selectivity to produce multi‐carbon products on copper‐based electrocatalysts. In this work, we synthesized Cu/CeO2 catalysts with varying amounts of Cu doping, aiming at effectively converting CO2 into C2+ products through electroreduction. At a copper doping level of 9.77 wt%, the catalyst exhibited a current density of 16.8 mA cm‐2 using a standard H‐type cell, achieving a C2+ faradaic efficiency (FE) of 78.3%. Through additional experiments and material characterization, we confirmed that controlling the Cu loading on the surface of CeO2 is an effective way to regulate the ratio of Cu+ to Cu0 active sites and the number of oxygen vacancies. Furthermore, the strong electron interaction between Ce4+‐O2‐‐Cu+ structure can stabilize Cu+ species and enhance the overall stability of the catalyst. This strategy enhances the selectivity towards C2+ products and effectively suppresses the competing hydrogen evolution reaction.

Abstract:Copper (Cu), a promising catalyst for electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R) to multi-electron reduction products, suffers from an unavoidable and uncontrollable reconstruction process during the reaction, which not only may lead to catalyst deactivation but also brings great challenges to the exploration of the structure-performance relationship. Herein, we present an efficient strategy for stabilizing Cu with silica and synthesize reconstruction-resistant CuSiOx amorphous nanotube catalysts with abundant atomic Cu-O-Si interfacial sites. The strong interfacial interaction between Cu and silica makes the Cu-O-Si interfacial sites ultrastable in the CO2R reaction without any apparent reconstruction, thus exhibiting high CO2-to-CH4 selectivity (72.5%) and stability (FECH4 remains above 60% after 12 h of test). A remarkable CO2-to-CH4 conversion rate of 0.22 μmol cm-2 s-1 was also achieved in a flow cell device. This work provides a very promising route for the design of highly active and stable Cu-based CO2R catalysts.
Selective Enhancement of Methane Formation in Electrochemical CO2 Reduction Enabled by a Raman-Inactive Oxygen-Containing Species on Cu

Abstract:The role of oxygen-containing species on Cu catalysts in the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) remains unclear due to the difficulty in its stabilization under reaction conditions. Co-electrolysis of CO2 with an oxidant is an effective strategy to introduce oxygen-containing species on Cu during the CO2RR. In this work, we present concrete evidence demonstrating that an oxygen-containing species is able to not only enhance the rate of the CO2RR but also tune selectivities for certain products. Co-electrolysis of CO2 with H2O2 on Cu selectively accelerates the CH4 production rate by up to a factor of 200, but with only a slight enhancement of C2+ products. Combined investigations using in situ Raman spectroscopy with density functional theory calculations reveal that a Raman-inactive Cu oxide species is responsible for the improved CH4 production. Results reported in this work highlight the possibility of enhancing Cu-based CO2RR catalysts by introducing stable oxygen-containing catalytic structures.
Cerium Dioxide-Induced Abundant Cu+/Cu0 Sites for Electrocatalytic Reduction of Carbon Dioxide to C2+ Products

Abstract:In recent years, the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2RR) has made many advances in C2+ production. Cu+/Cu0 site is beneficial for C-C coupling process, but the oxidation state of copper cannot be well maintained during the reaction process, resulting in a decrease in catalyst activity. Based on this consideration, in this work, transition metal oxide CeO2 with a hollow cube structure and oxygen vacancies was introduced to stabilize and increase Cu+/Cu0 active sites (Ce1Cu2). The catalyst exhibits excellent CO2RR performance, with FEC2+ achieving 73.52 % and jC2+ >280 mA/cm2 at 1.26 V (vs. RHE). Ethanol is the main C2+ product and FEethanol reaches 39 % at 1.26 V. The experimental results indicate that the presence of CeO2 provides a large number of oxygen vacancies and forming Cu+-O2--Ce4+ structure by the strong interaction of CeO2 and Cu NPs. The structure of Cu+-O2--Ce4+ and abundant oxygen vacancies lay a good foundation for the CO2 adsorption. Moreover, it increases the content of Cu+/Cu0 sites, effectively inhibiting hydrogen evolution reaction, promoting the C-C coupling interaction, thereby facilitating the generation of C2+ products. The DFT theoretical calculation further demonstrates that Ce1Cu2 is more inclined towards the ethanol pathway, confirming its high selectivity for ethanol.
Enriching the Local Concentration of CO Intermediates on Cu Cavities for the Electrocatalytic Reduction of CO2 to C2+ Products.

Abstract:The electrochemical carbon-dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) to high-value multi-carbon (C2+) chemicals provides a hopeful approach to store renewable energy and close the carbon cycle. Although copper-based catalysts with a porous architecture are considered potential electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction to C2+ chemicals, challenges remain in achieving high selectivity and partial current density simultaneously for practical application. Here, the porous Cu catalysts with a cavity structure by in situ electrochemical-reducing Cu2O cavities are developed for high-performance conversion of CO2 to C2+ fuels. The as-described catalysts exhibit a high C2+ Faradaic efficiency and partial current density of 75.6 ± 1.8% and 605 ± 14 mA cm-2, respectively, at a low applied potential (-0.59 V vs RHE) in a microfluidic flow cell. Furthermore, in situ Raman tests and finite element simulation indicated that the cavity structure can enrich the local concentration of CO intermediates, thus promoting the C-C coupling process. More importantly, the C-C coupling should be major through the *CO-*CHO pathway as demonstrated by the electrochemical Raman spectra and density functional theory calculations. This work can provide ideas and insights into designing high-performance electrocatalysts for producing C2+ compounds and highlight the important effect of in situ characterization for uncovering the reaction mechanism.

Abstract:Accelerating the conversion of *CO to *CHO and promoting the adsorption and hydrogenation of *CHO are the keys to achieving a highly selective electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to CH4 over Cu-based catalysts. Herein, a novel electrocatalyst comprising highly dispersed Cu nanoclusters (Cu-NCs) supported on oxygen vacancy (O-V)-rich CeO2 on carbon paper (Cu-NCs-CeO2/CP) with plentiful interfacial Cu+-O-Ce3+-O-V sites is constructed via a facile electrodeposition method. Various in situ/ex situ characterizations and theoretical calculations unveil that the Cu+-O-Ce3+-O-V sites can effectively regulate the pathway of the CO2RR, accelerate the *CO -> *CHO process, stabilize the *CHO and *OCH3 intermediates, and promote their hydrogenation to produce CH4. Furthermore, the critical role of Ce3+ and the O-V species in forming Cu+-O-Ce3+-O-V to maintain the electrocatalytic CO2RR activity is revealed. The optimized Cu-NCs-CeO2/CP electrocatalyst exhibits a CH4 Faradaic efficiency of 68.3% at 500 mA cm(-2), with a high partial current density of 340 mA cm(-2).
A Reconstructed Cu2P2O7 Catalyst for Selective CO2 Electroreduction to Multicarbon Products

Abstract:The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) over Cu-based catalysts shows great potential for converting CO2 into multicarbon (C2+) fuels and chemicals. Herein, we introduce an A(2)M(2)O(7) structure into a Cu-based catalyst through a solid-state reaction synthesis method. The Cu2P2O7 catalyst is electrochemically reduced to metallic Cu with a significant structure evolution from grain aggregates to highly porous structure under CO2RR conditions. The reconstructed Cu2P2O7 catalyst achieves a Faradaic efficiency of 73.6 % for C2+ products at an applied current density of 350 mA cm(-2), remarkably higher than the CuO counterparts. The reconstructed Cu2P2O7 catalyst has a high electrochemically active surface area, abundant defects, and low-coordinated sites. In situ Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations reveal that CO adsorption with bridge and atop configurations is largely improved on Cu with defects and low-coordinated sites, which decreased the energy barrier of the C-C coupling reaction for C2+ products.
Ce3+/Ce4+ Ion Redox Shuttle Stabilized Cuδ+ for Efficient CO2 Electroreduction to C2H4

Abstract:The CO2 electroreduction reaction has advantages in clean and pollution-free carbon conversion, but it still faces challenges in carbon utilization efficiency and improving the selectivity of C2+ products. Although the dynamic Cuδ+ state is known to favor the C-C coupling process, the Cuδ+ species suitable for electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 are difficult to maintain under the conditions of strong reduction and large current. Herein, we propose a Ce doping strategy (Ce/CuOx) to protect the Cuδ+ state in the CO2RR process, which enables a high Faradaic efficiency of 60% for multi-carbon products (40% for C2H4, 14% for CH3CH2OH, and 6% for CH3COOH), and 25 h stability at -1.2 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. In-situ infrared spectroscopy, in-situ XPS combined with density functional theory calculations reveal that the Cuδ+ is stabilized by the redox ion pairs of Ce, which reduces the energy barrier of *CO coupling, and improves the Faraday efficiency of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction of C2H4. This work provides an idea to make full use of lanthanide variable value metals to maintain the stability of dynamic Cuδ+ state and improve the performance of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to C2H4.

Space charge properties of LDPE influenced by heat treatments

Abstract:Heat treatment is one of the most important processes in production of insulating material. This paper presents space charge behaviors in low density polyethylene (LDPE). The LDPE specimens used for space charge experiments were obtained by three different heat treatment processes. These LDPE specimens have different degree of crystallinity and grain sizes. The accumulation and dissipation of space charge in LDPE specimens were measured through the pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) method. The degree of crystallinity and grain sizes of these specimens were obtained by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique. Experiment and analysis results show that the space charge behaviors in LDPE are affected by different heat treatment processes.
Atmosphere Induces Tunable Oxygen Vacancies to Stabilize Single-Atom Copper in Ceria for Robust Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction to CH4

Abstract:Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction (ECO2RR) shows great potential to create high-value carbon-based chemicals, while designing advanced catalysts at the atomic level remains challenging. The ECO2RR performance is largely dependent on the catalyst microelectronic structure that can be effectively modulated through surface defect engineering. Here, we provide an atmosphere-assisted low-temperature calcination strategy to prepare a series of single-atomic Cu/ceria catalysts with varied oxygen vacancy concentrations for robust electrolytic reduction of CO2 to methane. The obtained Cu/ceria catalyst under H2 environment (Cu/ceria-H2) exhibits a methane Faraday efficiency (FECH4) of 70.03 % with a turnover frequency (TOFCH4) of 9946.7 h-1 at an industrial-scale current density of 150 mA cm-2 in a flow cell. Detailed studies indicate the copious oxygen vacancies in the Cu/ceria-H2 are conducive to regulating the surface microelectronic structure with stabilized Cu+ active center. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations and operando ATR-SEIRAS demonstrate that the Cu/ceria-H2 can markedly enhance the activation of CO2, facilitate the adsorption of pivotal intermediates *COOH and *CO, thus ultimately enabling the high selectivity for CH4 production. This study presents deep insights into designing effective electrocatalysts for CO2 to CH4 conversion by controlling the surface microstructure via the reaction atmosphere.
Surface modification of Cu2O with stabilized Cu+ for highly efficient and stable CO2 electroreduction to C2+ chemicals

Abstract:Copper (Cu)-based materials are known as the most attractive catalysts for electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), especially the Cu+ species (e.g., Cu2O), which show excellent capability for catalyzing CO2 to C2+ chemicals because of their unique electronic structure. However, the active Cu+ species are prone to be reduced to metallic Cu under an electroreduction environment, thus resulting in fast deactivation and poor selectivity. Here, we developed an advanced surface modification strategy to maintain the active Cu+ species via assembling a protective layer of metal-organic framework (copper benzenetricarboxylate, CuBTC) on the surface of Cu2O octahedron (Cu2O@CuBTC). It's encouraging to see that the Cu2O@CuBTC heterostructure outperforms the bare Cu2O octahedron in catalyzing CO2 to C2+ chemicals and dramatically enhances the ratio of C2H4/CH4 products. A systematic study reveals that the introduced CuBTC shell plays a critical role in maintaining the active Cu+ species in Cu2O@CuBTC heterostructure under reductive conditions. This work offers a practical strategy for improving the catalytic performance of CO2RR over copper oxides and also establishes a route to maintain the state of valence-sensitive catalysts.

Constructing Cu0/Cu+ interfaces on Cu-based MOFs derivatives to promote the adsorption stability of intermediates in the process of CO2 electroreduction to C2 products

Abstract:Utilizing electrocatalysis to convert CO2 into high-value industrial raw materials can not only effectively reduce CO2 emissions but also achieve a closed carbon cycle. This method holds great potential for addressing global warming and alleviating the fossil fuel crisis. Here, we report a novel electrocatalyst for CO2 reduction composed of a composite material derived from Cu-MOF74 and Cu2O, synthesized under the regulation of an appropriate amount of KOH. The research results indicate that the unique Cu0/Cu+ interface in Cu-MOF74/Cu2O-350 enhances the adsorption of reaction intermediates, providing more active sites for CO2 reduction. Additionally, the moderate carbonization during the thermal treatment process increases conductivity and enriches the electrochemical active surface area, accelerating the charge transfer rate. Consequently, this composite exhibits excellent CO2 reduction performance. At -1.3 V vs. RHE, the Faraday efficiency (FE) for C2H4 production reached up to 32.48%, which was significantly higher than that of pure Cu2O-350 (9.25%) and Cu-MOF74-350 (15.52%). Even after 6 hours of reaction, the FE for C2H4 remained above 24.52%, reflecting its good stability. Furthermore, we utilized in-situ infrared spectroscopy to study the key intermediates of the relevant reduction products, inferring the possible reaction pathways for the formation of HCOOH and C2H4. This study provides a simple synthesis method for the preparation of high-selectivity MOF-derived composite catalysts for the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to value-added chemicals.

Abstract:Selective and efficient catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into value-added fuels and feedstocks provides an ideal avenue to high-density renewable energy storage. An impediment to enabling deep CO2 reduction to oxygenates and hydrocarbons (e.g., C2+ compounds) is the difficulty of coupling carbon-carbon bonds efficiently. Copper in the +1 oxidation state has been thought to be active for catalyzing C2+ formation, whereas it is prone to being reduced to Cu0 at cathodic potentials. Here we report that catalysts with nanocavities can confine carbon intermediates formed in situ, which in turn covers the local catalyst surface and thereby stabilizes Cu+ species. Experimental measurements on multihollow cuprous oxide catalyst exhibit a C2+ Faradaic efficiency of 75.2 ± 2.7% at a C2+ partial current density of 267 ± 13 mA cm-2 and a large C2+-to-C1 ratio of ∼7.2. Operando Raman spectra, in conjunction with X-ray absorption studies, confirm that Cu+ species in the as-designed catalyst are well retained during CO2 reduction, which leads to the marked C2+ selectivity at a large conversion rate.

Abstract:Generating stable active sites can improve the activity and selectivity of the catalyst. CeO2/CuS catalysts perform a Faradaic efficiency of 75.2% for the C2+ products and a total current density of 160 mA cm−2 in a flow cell. CeO2 can effectively stabilize the Cu+ species due to its facile redox cycle (Ce4+ ↔ Ce3+), thus facilitate CC coupling and formation of *COCHO. Copper‐based electrocatalysts effectively produce multicarbon (C2+) compounds during the electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2RR). However, big challenges still remain because of the chemically unstable active sites. Here, cerium is used as a self‐sacrificing agent to stabilize the Cu+ of CuS, due to the facile Ce3+/Ce4+ redox. CeO2‐modified CuS nanoplates achieve high ethanol selectivity, with FE up to 54% and FEC2+ ≈ 75% in a flow cell. Moreover, in situ Raman spectroscopy and in situ Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy indicate that the stable Cu+ species promote CC coupling step under CO2RR. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that the stronger *CO adsorption and lower CC coupling energy, which is conducive to the selective generation of ethanol products. This work provides a facile strategy to convert CO2 into ethanol by retaining Cu+ species.

Abstract:A copper‐based metal‐organic framework is synthesized via a solvent‐free method. Upon CO2 electroreduction, it undergoes in situ decomposition/redeposition to form abundant interfacial sites between copper nanoparticles and amorphous carbon supports, which stabilize the key intermediates for CH4 formation. Stable production of CH4 with Faradaic efficiency of ≈55% is achieved for 12.5 h. The CO2 electroreduction to fuels is a feasible approach to provide renewable energy sources. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct experimental and theoretical investigations on various catalyst design strategies, such as electronic metal–support interaction, to improve the catalytic selectivity. Here a solvent‐free synthesis method is reported to prepare a copper (Cu)‐based metal–organic framework (MOF) as the precursor. Upon electrochemical CO2 reduction in aqueous electrolyte, it undergoes in situ decomposition/redeposition processes to form abundant interfaces between Cu nanoparticles and amorphous carbon supports. This Cu/C catalyst favors the selective and stable production of CH4 with a Faradaic efficiency of ≈55% at −1.4 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) for 12.5 h. The density functional theory calculation reveals the crucial role of interfacial sites between Cu and amorphous carbon support in stabilizing the key intermediates for CO2 reduction to CH4. The adsorption of COOH* and CHO* at the Cu/C interface is up to 0.86 eV stronger than that on Cu(111), thus promoting the formation of CH4. Therefore, it is envisioned that the strategy of regulating electronic metal–support interaction can improve the selectivity and stability of catalyst toward a specific product upon electrochemical CO2 reduction.

Abstract:The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising approach to upgrading CO2 into methane (CH4) and other high-value-added chemicals, critical for lowering carbon emissions and mitigating the greenhouse effect. However, the selectivity of CO2RR to methane remains low at the current densities required for commercialization. Herein, we report a simple one-step synthesis of monodisperse copper-based catalysts for efficient electromethanation of CO2. Through rational regulation of active sites, the selectivity for methane production can reach as high as 57.02% under the current density of 300 mA cm–2 as a result of suppressed C–C coupling for improved *CO hydrogenation. This work offers an effective strategy to regulate Cu-based catalysts to manage the hydrogenation of *CO for CO2RR toward CH4 formation.

Abstract:Copper (Cu) is recognized as a unique metal catalyst in the electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) because its moderate *CO binding ability can accelerate deep CO 2 reduction to valuable products. Here, for the first time, we realize the CO 2 RR to hydrocarbon on various non-copper metal catalysts (Pd, Ag, Zn, and Ga) through a general strategy of modifying the local reaction environment. Taking the metallic Pd catalyst as an example, whose typical products were CO and H 2 in previous studies, a total faradaic efficiency of 50% to CH 4 + C 2 H 4 can be achieved by implementing a pre-electrochemical activation process on the catalysts. The activation process can facilitate the adsorption behavior of interfacial *OH. The intensive spectroscopic studies combined with theoretical calculations revealed that improved *OH coverage prohibits the surface from *CO poisoning and accelerates the *CO hydrogenation process to *COH, accounting for the deep electroreduction to hydrocarbon products. Such a strategy of modifying the local environment can be extended to other I-type metals (Ag, Zn, and Ga) to generate hydrocarbons. This work highlights a new insight for advancing the CO 2 RR to hydrocarbon beyond copper metal catalysts.
