Abstract:Shoot branching is regulated by phytohormones, including cytokinin (CK), strigolactone (SL), and auxin in axillary buds. The correlative importance of these phytohormones in the outgrowth of apple axillary buds remains unclear. In this study, the outgrowth dynamics of axillary buds of a more-branching mutant (MB) and its wild-type (WT) of Malus spectabilis were assessed using exogenous chemical treatments, transcriptome analysis, paraffin section, and reverse transcription-quantitative PCR analysis (RT-qPCR). High contents of CK and abscisic acid coincided in MB axillary buds. Exogenous CK promoted axillary bud outgrowth in the WT but not in MB, whereas exogenous gibberellic had no significant effect on bud outgrowth in the WT. Functional analysis of transcriptome data and RT-qPCR analysis of gene transcripts revealed that MB branching were associated with CK signaling, auxin transport, and SL signaling. Transcription of the SL-related genes MsMAX1, MsD14, and MsMAX2 in the axillary buds of MB was generally upregulated during bud outgrowth, whereas MsBRC1/2 were generally downregulated both in WT and MB. Exogenous SL inhibited outgrowth of axillary buds in the WT and the apple varieties T337, M26, and Nagafu 2, whereas axillary buds of the MB were insensitive to SL treatment. Treatment with N-1-naphthylphalamic acid (NPA; an auxin transport inhibitor) inhibited bud outgrowth in plants of the WT and MB. The transcript abundance of MsPIN1 was generally decreased in response to NPA and SL treatments, and increased in CK and decapitation treatments, whereas no consistent pattern was observed for MsD14 and MsMAX2. Collectively, the present results suggest that in apple auxin transport from the axillary bud to the stem may be essential for the outgrowth of axillary buds, and at least, is involved in the process of bud outgrowth.

Abstract:Abstract Background Axillary buds allow the production of either vegetative or reproductive shoots, which display a plastic developmental potential of the plant to suit the prevailing environmental changes. Strawberry represents one of many plant species which displays horizontal above-ground growth of shoot development for asexual reproduction. Two distinct runner growth patterns exist in different strawberry species: one is called sympodial type such as Fragaria vesca , and the other one is called monopodial type such as Fragaria pentaphylla . Despite the runner growth morphology of these strawberry species have been well known, the mechanisms that determine the distinct patterns have rarely been reported. Results In this study, we used Fragaria vesca Hawaii-4 and Fragaria pentaphylla as model species, and captured the initiated dormant bud and non-dormant bud as materials to compare their transcriptome profiles and phytohormone content. Comparisons revealed that relatively higher auxin activity is present in the dormant bud and relatively higher cytokinin activity is in the non-dormant bud. Decapitation and pharmacological experiments on dormant buds showed that the reduction of auxin accumulation triggers the regeneration of vegetative shoots in dormant buds, and exogenous cytokinin application triggers cell fate turnover and generation of reproductive shoots. Conclusion Here, we uncover a mechanism by which auxin and cytokinin coordinate the dormancy and outgrowth of axillary bud in strawberry runner. Our results suggest a contrasting behavior of auxin and cytokinin in control of axillary bud development, facilitating a preliminary understanding of shoot architecture formation in strawberry.

Abstract:In many plant species only a small proportion of buds yield branches. Both the timing and extent of bud activation are tightly regulated to produce specific branching architectures. For example, the primary shoot apex can inhibit the activation of lateral buds. This process is termed apical dominance and is dependent on the plant hormone auxin moving down the main stem in the polar auxin transport stream. We use a computational model and mathematical analysis to show that apical dominance can be explained in terms of an auxin transport switch established by the temporal precedence between competing auxin sources. Our model suggests a mechanistic basis for the indirect action of auxin in bud inhibition and captures the effects of diverse genetic and physiological manipulations. In particular, the model explains the surprising observation that highly branched Arabidopsis phenotypes can exhibit either high or low auxin transport.

Phytochrome A Signal Transduction 1 and CONSTANS‐LIKE 13 Coordinately Orchestrate Shoot Branching and Flowering in Leafy Brassica Juncea

Abstract:Branching is a major determinant of crop yield, and enables vigorous shoot growth and the production of a dense canopy. Phytochrome A signal transduction 1 (PAT1) positively regulates phytochrome A signal transduction in response to light, but its effects on branching remain unknown. In this study, we mapped PAT1, and revealed a previously unknown role related to branching and flowering in leafy Brassica juncea. Earlier and increased branching was observed when PAT1 expression was down-regulated, implying that PAT1 negatively regulates shoot branching. Additionally, down-regulated PAT1 expression reversed the inhibited branching induced by far-red light, suggesting PAT1 is involved in the shade avoidance response. PAT1 negatively regulated branching only after bud initiation. The observed interaction between PAT1 and BRC1 implied that PAT1 influences bud outgrowth in a BRC1-dependent manner. Biochemical and genetic evidence indicate that PAT1 directly interacts with CONSTANS-LIKE 13 (COL13), which negatively regulates flowering, with the resulting PAT1-COL13 complex mediating shoot branching and flowering. Our findings reveal a new crosstalk modality between phytochrome signalling and flowering pathways during the regulation of shoot branching and flowering. The data presented herein may be useful for future studies involving the editing of the GRAS family transcription factor PAT1 gene to enhance crop productivity and enable earlier harvesting.
Branching gene expression during chrysanthemum axillary bud outgrowth regulated by strigolactone and auxin transport

Abstract:Shoot branching is essential in ornamental chrysanthemum production and determines final plant shape and quality. Auxin is associated with apical dominance to indirectly inhibit bud outgrowth. Two non-mutually exclusive models exist for indirect auxin inhibition. Basipetal auxin transport inhibits axillary bud outgrowth by limiting auxin export from buds to stem (canalization model) or by increasing strigolactone levels (second messenger model). Here we analyzed bud outgrowth in treatments with auxin (IAA), strigolactone (GR24) and auxin transport inhibitor (NPA) using a split-plate bioassay with isolated chrysanthemum stem segments. Besides measuring bud length, dividing cell percentage was measured with flow cytometry and RT-qPCR was used to monitor expression levels of genes involved in auxin transport (CmPIN1) and signaling (CmAXR2), bud dormancy (CmBRC1, CmDRM1) and strigolactone biosynthesis (CmMAX1, CmMAX3). Treatments over a 5-day period showed bud outgrowth in the control and inhibition with IAA and IAA + GR24. Bud outgrowth in the control coincided with high dividing cell percentage, decreased expression of CmBRC1 and CmDRM1 and increased CmPIN1 expression. Inhibition by IAA and IAA + GR24 coincided with low dividing cell percentage and unchanged or increased expressions of CmBRC1, CmDRM1 and CmPIN1. Treatment with GR24 showed restricted bud outgrowth that was counteracted by NPA. This restricted bud outgrowth was still concomitant with a high dividing cell percentage and coincided with decreased expression of dormancy genes. These results indicate incomplete inhibition of bud outgrowth by GR24 treatment and suggest involvement of auxin transport in the mechanism of bud inhibition by strigolactones, supporting the canalization model.

Abstract:Shoot branching significantly influences yield and timber quality in woody plants, with hybrid Liriodendron being particularly valuable due to its rapid growth. However, understanding of the mechanisms governing shoot branching in hybrid Liriodendron remains limited. In this study, we systematically examined axillary bud development using morphological and anatomical approaches and selected four distinct developmental stages for an extensive transcriptome analysis. A total of 9,449 differentially expressed genes have been identified, many of which are involved in plant hormone signal transduction pathways. Additionally, we identified several transcription factors downregulated during early axillary bud development, including a noteworthy gene annotated as CYC-like from the TCP TF family, which emerged as a strong candidate for modulating axillary bud development. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction results confirmed the highest expression levels of LhCYCL in hybrid Liriodendron axillary buds, while histochemical β-glucuronidase staining suggested its potential role in Arabidopsis thaliana leaf axil development. Ectopic expression of LhCYCL in A. thaliana led to an increase of branches and a decrease of plant height, accompanied by altered expression of genes involved in the plant hormone signaling pathways. This indicates the involvement of LhCYCL in regulating shoot branching through plant hormone signaling pathways. In summary, our results emphasize the pivotal role played by LhCYCL in shoot branching, offering insights into the function of the CYC-like gene and establishing a robust foundation for further investigations into the molecular mechanisms governing axillary bud development in hybrid Liriodendron .

Abstract:Significance Shoot-branching patterns affect key aspects of plant life and are important targets for crop breeding. However, we are still ignorant of the genetic mechanisms controlling locally an important decision during branch development: whether the axillary bud grows out to give a lateral shoot or remains dormant. Here we show that the TEOSINTE BRANCHED1, CYCLOIDEA, PCF (TCP) transcriptional regulator BRANCHED1 (BRC1), which acts inside axillary buds, binds and activates three genes encoding Homeodomain leucine zipper (HD-ZIP) transcription factors. These factors, together with BRC1, trigger a cascade leading to local abscisic acid (ABA) accumulation and response, essential for bud dormancy under light-limiting conditions. This finding demonstrates a direct relationship between BRC1 and ABA signaling and places ABA downstream of BRC1 in the control of axillary bud dormancy.
Changes in Phytohormone Content and Associated Gene Expression Throughout the Stages of Pear (pyrus Pyrifolia Nakai) Dormancy.

Abstract:To elucidate the role of phytohormones during bud dormancy progression in the Japanese pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai), we investigated changes in phytohormone levels of indole acetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid (GA), abscisic acid (ABA) and trans-zeatin (tZ). Using ultra-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry, we monitored phytohormone levels in the buds of field-grown and potted trees that were artificially heated to modify the timing of dormancy and flowering (spring flush) progression. We also analyzed the expression of GA- and ABA-metabolic genes during dormancy. Indole acetic acid and tZ levels were low during dormancy and increased toward the flowering stage. Gibberellic acid levels were maintained at relatively high concentrations during the dormancy induction stage, then decreased before slightly increasing prior to flowering. The low GA concentration in potted trees compared with field-grown trees indicated that GA functions in regulating tree vigor. Abscisic acid levels increased from the dormancy induction stage, peaked near endodormancy release and steadily decreased before increasing again before the flowering stage. The ABA peak levels did not always coincide with endodormancy release, but peak height correlated with flowering uniformity, suggesting that a decline in ABA concentration was not necessary for resumption of growth but the abundance of ABA might be associated with dormancy depth. From monitoring the expression of genes related to GA and ABA metabolism, we inferred that phytohormone metabolism changed significantly during dormancy, even though the levels of bioactive molecules were consistently low. Phytohormones regulate dormancy progression not only upon the reception of internal signals but also upon sensing ambient conditions.

Abstract:As a key integrator of shoot branching, BRANCHED 1 (BRC1) coordinates and is orchestrated by endogenous and environmental signals involved in the regulation of axillary bud outgrowth. In the present study, we characterized the regulatory roles of five BRC gene members in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) using CRISPR site-directed mutagenesis and overexpression assays. It was shown that lateral branching was negatively regulated by NtBRC1A-1, 1B-1, and 1B-2, but was unexpectedly promoted by NtBRC2A. Suppression of bud growth may be attained by direct binding of NtBRCs to the Tassels Replace Upper Ears 1 (TRU1) genes. It was speculated that NtBRC2A probably confers a dominant negative effect by interfering with the branching-inhibitory BRC1 genes. Our results suggested that highly homologous gene family members may function antagonistically in the same signaling pathway. However, the molecular mechanism underlying NtBRC2A-mediated outgrowth of axillary buds needs to be further addressed.

Characterization of the Molecular Events Underlying the Establishment of Axillary Meristem Region in Pepper

Abstract:Plant architecture is a major motif of plant diversity, and shoot branching patterns primarily determine the aerial architecture of plants. In this study, we identified an inbred pepper line with fewer lateral branches, 20C1734, which was free of lateral branches at the middle and upper nodes of the main stem with smooth and flat leaf axils. Successive leaf axil sections confirmed that in normal pepper plants, for either node n, Pn (Primordium n) < 1 cm and Pn+1 < 1 cm were the critical periods between the identification of axillary meristems and the establishment of the region, whereas Pn+3 < 1 cm was fully developed and formed a completely new organ. In 20C1734, the normal axillary meristematic tissue region establishment and meristematic cell identity confirmation could not be performed on the axils without axillary buds. Comparative transcriptome analysis revealed that "auxin-activated signaling pathway", "response to auxin", "response to abscisic acid", "auxin biosynthetic process", and the biosynthesis of the terms/pathways, such as "secondary metabolites", were differentially enriched in different types of leaf axils at critical periods of axillary meristem development. The accuracy of RNA-seq was verified using RT-PCR for some genes in the pathway. Several differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to endogenous phytohormones were targeted, including several genes of the PINs family. The endogenous hormone assay showed extremely high levels of IAA and ABA in leaf axils without axillary buds. ABA content in particular was unusually high. At the same time, there is no regular change in IAA level in this type of leaf axils (normal leaf axils will be accompanied by AM formation and IAA content will be low). Based on this, we speculated that the contents of endogenous hormones IAA and ABA in 20C1734 plant increased sharply, which led to the abnormal expression of genes in related pathways, which affected the formation of Ams in leaf axils in the middle and late vegetative growth period, and finally, nodes without axillary buds and side branches appeared.

Abstract:A plastic root system is a prerequisite for successful plant acclimation to variable environments. The normally functioning root system is the result of a complex interaction of root-borne signals and shoot-derived regulators. We recently demonstrated that AUX1, a well-studied component of auxin transport, mediates shoot-supplied ammonium (SSA) inhibition of lateral root (LR) formation in Arabidopsis. By contrast, the response did not involve ABA pathways, via which several other abiotic stresses affect LR formation. We proposed that SSA regulates LR emergence by interrupting AUX1-mediated auxin transport from shoot to root. Here, by analyzing both ABA- and auxin-related mutants, we show that AUX1 is also required for SSA-mediated suppression of primary root growth. Ammonium content in shoots was furthermore shown to increase linearly with shoot-, but not root-supplied, ammonium, suggesting it may represent the internal trigger for SSA inhibition of root development. Taken together, our data identify AUX1-mediated auxin transport as a key transmission step in the sensing of excessive ammonium exposure and its inhibitory effect on root development.

Abstract:Summary Arabidopsis thaliana (Arabidopsis) shoot architecture is largely determined by the pattern of axillary buds that grow into lateral branches, the regulation of which requires integrating both local and systemic signals. Nodal explants – stem explants each bearing one leaf and its associated axillary bud – are a simplified system to understand the regulation of bud activation. To explore signal integration in bud activation, we characterised the growth dynamics of buds in nodal explants in key mutants and under different treatments. We observed that isolated axillary buds activate in two genetically and physiologically separable phases: a slow‐growing lag phase, followed by a switch to rapid outgrowth. Modifying BRANCHED1 expression or the properties of the auxin transport network, including via strigolactone application, changed the length of the lag phase. While most interventions affected only the length of the lag phase, strigolactone treatment and a second bud also affected the rapid growth phase. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that the slow‐growing lag phase corresponds to the time during which buds establish canalised auxin transport out of the bud, after which they enter a rapid growth phase. Our work also hints at a role for auxin transport in influencing the maximum growth rate of branches.

Abstract:Transcription factors, also known as trans-acting factors, balance development and stress responses in plants. Branching plays an important role in plant morphogenesis and is closely related to plant biomass and crop yield. The apical meristem produced during plant embryonic development repeatedly produces the body of the plant, and the final aerial structure is regulated by the branching mode generated by axillary meristem (AM) activities. These branching patterns are regulated by two processes: AM formation and axillary bud growth. In recent years, transcription factors involved in regulating these processes have been identified. In addition, these transcription factors play an important role in various plant hormone pathways and photoresponses regulating plant branching. In this review, we start from the formation and growth of axillary meristems, including the regulation of hormones, light and other internal and external factors, and focus on the transcription factors involved in regulating plant branching and development to provide candidate genes for improving crop architecture through gene editing or directed breeding.

Abstract:Apical dominance, the process by which the growing apical zone of the shoot inhibits bud outgrowth, involves an intricate network of several signals in the shoot. Auxin originating from plant apical region inhibits bud outgrowth indirectly. This inhibition is in particular mediated by cytokinins and strigolactones, which move from the stem to the bud and that respectively stimulate and repress bud outgrowth. The action of this hormonal network is itself modulated by sugar levels as competition for sugars, caused by the growing apical sugar sink, may deprive buds from sugars and prevents bud outgrowth partly by their signaling role. In this review, we analyze recent findings on the interaction between light, in terms of quantity and quality, and apical dominance regulation. Depending on growth conditions, light may trigger different pathways of the apical dominance regulatory network. Studies pinpoint to the key role of shoot-located cytokinin synthesis for light intensity and abscisic acid synthesis in the bud for R:FR in the regulation of bud outgrowth by light. Our analysis provides three major research lines to get a more comprehensive understanding of light effects on bud outgrowth. This would undoubtedly benefit from the use of computer modeling associated with experimental observations to deal with a regulatory system that involves several interacting signals, feedbacks, and quantitative effects.

Abstract:Hormones play an important role in regulating the growth of rice tiller buds. However, little is known about the hormonal changes that occur during tiller bud growth and the mechanism of hormonal regulation of tiller bud growth. Here, two rice cultivars, Yangdao 6 (Indica) and Nanjing 44 (Japonica), were used to investigate the changes in plant hormones during tiller bud growth and the mechanism that underlies the hormonal regulation of tiller bud growth. In the present study, panicles were removed after heading to stimulate the growth of dormant tiller buds located at the elongated upper internodes. At the same time, external abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellic acid (GA 3 ) and α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) were applied. The results demonstrated that auxin and cytokinin (CTK) play important and different roles in the regulation of tiller bud growth. Auxin in the nodes inhibits tiller bud growth, while CTK is transferred to the tiller buds to promote growth. The inhibitory effects of GA 3 and NAA on tiller bud growth are mainly due to the control of the indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) or CTK contents in plants. As opposed to auxin and CTK, the ABA contents in nodes and tiller buds remained unchanged before tiller bud growth after panicle removal. Meanwhile, external ABA application only slightly slowed the growth of the tiller buds, suggesting that ABA may not be a key regulator of tiller bud growth. These results indicate that auxin, CTK and ABA together likely play roles in the regulation of tiller bud growth.
The Hormonal, Metabolic, and Environmental Regulation of Plant Shoot Branching

Abstract:Plants have evolved varied structures for environmental adaptation. Shoot branching, as a part of plant architecture, influences the allocation of sugars produced by photosynthesis and thus greatly impacts crop yields. The activity of axillary meristem, and apical dominance governs the shoot branching patterns. In this review, we summarize the key factors involved in the formation of lateral branches, and the mechanisms of how these factors are interconnected. In particular, we focus on recent advances in understanding how sugar and environmental signals affect the hormonal signaling network to regulate apical dominance. Ultimately, we propose that epigenetic modifications are critical mechanisms underlying the plasticity of shoot branching, and that precise targeted gene editing is promising for shaping the ideal plant architecture.

Abstract:Lateral branches are important components of shoot architecture and directly affect crop yield and production cost. Although sporadic studies have implicated abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis in axillary bud outgrowth, the function of ABA catabolism and its upstream regulators in shoot branching remain elusive. Here, we showed that the MADS-box transcription factor AGAMOUS-LIKE 16 (CsAGL16) is a positive regulator of axillary bud outgrowth in cucumber (Cucumis sativus). Functional disruption of CsAGL16 led to reduced bud outgrowth, whereas overexpression of CsAGL16 resulted in enhanced branching. CsAGL16 directly binds to the promoter of the ABA 8'-hydroxylase gene CsCYP707A4 and promotes its expression. Loss of CsCYP707A4 function inhibited axillary bud outgrowth and increased ABA levels. Elevated expression of CsCYP707A4 or treatment with an ABA biosynthesis inhibitor largely rescued the Csagl16 mutant phenotype. Moreover, cucumber General Regulatory Factor 1 (CsGRF1) interacts with CsAGL16 and antagonizes CsAGL16-mediated CsCYP707A4 activation. Disruption of CsGRF1 resulted in elongated branches and decreased ABA levels in the axillary buds. The Csagl16 Csgrf1 double mutant exhibited a branching phenotype resembling that of the Csagl16 single mutant. Therefore, our data suggest that the CsAGL16–CsGRF1 module regulates axillary bud outgrowth via CsCYP707A4-mediated ABA catabolism in cucumber. Our findings provide a strategy to manipulate ABA levels in axillary buds during crop breeding to produce desirable branching phenotypes.

Abstract:Shoot branching affects plant architecture. In strawberry (Fragaria L.), short branches (crowns) develop from dormant axillary buds to form inflorescences and flowers. While this developmental transition contributes greatly to perenniality and yield in strawberry, its regulatory mechanism remains unclear and understudied. In the woodland strawberry (Fragaria vesca), we identified and characterized two independent mutants showing more crowns. Both mutant alleles reside in FveMYB117a, a R2R3-MYB transcription factor gene highly expressed in shoot apical meristems, axillary buds and young leaves. Transcriptome analysis revealed that the expression of several cytokinin pathway genes was altered in the fvemyb117a mutant. Consistently, active cytokinins were significantly increased in the axillary buds of the fvemyb117a mutant. Exogenous application of cytokinin enhanced crown outgrowth in the wild type, whereas the cytokinin inhibitors suppressed crown outgrowth in the fvemyb117a mutant. FveMYB117a binds directly to the promoters of the cytokinin homeostasis genes FveIPT2 encoding an isopentenyltransferase and FveCKX1 encoding a cytokinin oxidase to regulate their expression. Conversely, the type-B Arabidopsis response regulators FveARR1 and FveARR2b can directly inhibit the expression of FveMYB117a, indicative of a negative feedback regulation. In conclusion, we identified FveMYB117a as a key repressor of crown outgrowth by inhibiting cytokinin accumulation and provide a mechanistic basis for bud fate transition in an herbaceous perennial plant.

Abstract:Shoot branching fundamentally influences plant architecture and agricultural yield. However, research on shoot branching in Dendrobium catenatum, an endangered medicinal plant in China, remains limited. In this study, we identified a transcription factor DcERF109 as a key player in shoot branching by regulating the expression of strigolactone (SL) receptors DWARF 14 (D14)/ DECREASED APICAL DOMINANCE 2 (DAD2). The treatment of D. catenatum seedlings with GR24rac/TIS108 revealed that SL can significantly repress the shoot branching in D. catenatum. The expression of DcERF109 in multi‐branched seedlings is significantly higher than that of single‐branched seedlings. Ectopic expression in Arabidopsis thaliana demonstrated that overexpression of DcERF109 resulted in significant shoot branches increasing and dwarfing. Molecular and biochemical assays demonstrated that DcERF109 can directly bind to the promoters of AtD14 and DcDAD2.2 to inhibit their expression, thereby positively regulating shoot branching. Inhibition of DcERF109 by virus‐induced gene silencing (VIGS) resulted in decreased shoot branching and improved DcDAD2.2 expression. Moreover, overexpression of DpERF109 in A. thaliana, the homologous gene of DcERF109 in Dendrobium primulinum, showed similar phenotypes to DcERF109 in shoot branch and plant height. Collectively, these findings shed new insights into the regulation of plant shoot branching and provide a theoretical basis for improving the yield of D. catenatum.

Abstract:Hormones play an important role in regulating the growth of rice tiller buds. However, little is known about the hormonal changes that occur during tiller bud growth and the mechanism of hormonal regulation of tiller bud growth. Here, two rice cultivars, Yangdao 6 (Indica) and Nanjing 44 (Japonica), were used to investigate the changes in plant hormones during tiller bud growth and the mechanism that underlies the hormonal regulation of tiller bud growth. In the present study, panicles were removed after heading to stimulate the growth of dormant tiller buds located at the elongated upper internodes. At the same time, external abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellic acid (GA(3)) and a-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) were applied. The results demonstrated that auxin and cytokinin (CTK) play important and different roles in the regulation of tiller bud growth. Auxin in the nodes inhibits tiller bud growth, while CTK is transferred to the tiller buds to promote growth. The inhibitory effects of GA(3) and NAA on tiller bud growth are mainly due to the control of the indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) or CTK contents in plants. As opposed to auxin and CTK, the ABA contents in nodes and tiller buds remained unchanged before tiller bud growth after panicle removal. Meanwhile, external ABA application only slightly slowed the growth of the tiller buds, suggesting that ABA may not be a key regulator of tiller bud growth. These results indicate that auxin, CTK and ABA together likely play roles in the regulation of tiller bud growth.
