Abstract:Accelerating the sluggish anode reaction in a Zn–air battery can improve its energy efficiency, but the large-scale development of this battery is hindered by the lack of bifunctional catalysts. Herein, we designed a one-step carbonization strategy for synthesizing monodispersed Co nanoparticles supported on N-doped carbon nanotube (Co/CNT), which shows excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic performance with long-term durability for oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reaction. The formation of carbon substrates from the carbonization of nitrogenous organic molecules are benefit to capture more Co nanoparticles though strong metal–substrate interaction, then construct high-density effective active sites of the Lewis base for accelerating the electrocatalytic reaction process. To verify its superior performance, a rechargeable Zn–air battery with a Co/CNT air electrode was subsequently constructed. The battery exhibits an open-circuit voltage of 1.41 V and a specific discharge capacity of 835.2 mAh/gZn, which can be continuously charged and discharged with good cycle stability. Our study provides a new strategy for developing various practical carbon-based non-noble metallic bifunctional electrocatalysts with promising performance in electrocatalysis and batteries to achieve the target of carbon neutrality.
High-performance bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for zinc-air batteries over nitrogen-doped carbon encapsulating CoNi nanoparticles

Abstract:The nitrogen doped carbon (NC) encapsulating metal particles (metal/NC) are promising low-cost bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for rechargeable Zn-air batteries. However, the states of the art catalytic performance are still significantly restricted by the limited content of active sites for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, a series of NC encapsulating CoNi samples as a bifunctional catalyst for both ORR and OER were synthesized via a simple pyrolysis method. Large surface area and high content M-Nx active sites promote the ORR activity and accelerate the surface reconstruction layer for high OER performance. The NC encapsulating CoNi with optimized Co/Ni ratio (2 : 1) shows high ORR activity with a half-wave of potential (0.85 V) and a low overpotential of 309 mV for OER. Rechargeable Zn-air battery assembled by an air cathode with the NC encapsulating CoNi exhibits a power density of 143 mW cm−2 and good cyclability over 100 h at 10 mA cm-2. This mechanism work provides a feasible strategy for developing high activity and low cost bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts.

Abstract:A low-cost efficient electrocatalyst for both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is urgently required for the commercialization of Zn-air batteries. Herein, CoMn nanoalloys encapsulated in nitrogen-doped hollow carbon architectures (CoMn@NHC) as dual electrocatalysts for Zn-air batteries were developed successfully. The obtained CoMn@NHC nanohybrid expresses excellent electrocatalytic performances for ORR (E1/2 = 0.87 V) and OER (Ei=10 = 1.51 V). More encouragingly, a homemade aqueous Zn-air battery using CoMn@NHC catalyst delivers a larger peak power density of 92.3 mW cm−2 and excellent stability of nearly 300 h, outperforming the commercial Pt/C + RuO2. The remarkable electrocatalytic performances are owing to the unique microstructure and the synergistic effect between CoMn alloy and N-doped carbon substrate. This study opens a new way for designing high-efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for application in renewable energy facilities.

Abstract:Developing non-precious-metal bifunctional oxygen reduction and evolution reaction (ORR/OER) catalysts is a major task for promoting the reaction efficiency of Zn-air batteries. Co-based catalysts have been regarded as promising ORR and OER catalysts owing to the multivalence characteristic of cobalt element. Herein, the synthesis of Co nanoislands rooted on Co-N-C nanosheets supported by carbon felts (Co/Co-N-C) is reported. Co nanosheets rooted on the carbon felt derived from electrodeposition are applied as the self-template and cobalt source. The synergistic effect of metal Co islands with OER activity and Co-N-C nanosheets with superior ORR performance leads to good bifuctional catalytic performances. Wavelet transform extended X-ray absorption fine spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy certify the formation of Co (mainly Co0 ) and the Co-N-C (mainly Co2+ and Co3+ ) structure. As the air-cathode, the assembled aqueous Zn-air battery exhibits a small charge-discharge voltage gap (0.82 V@10 mA cm-2 ) and high power density of 132 mW cm-2 , outperforming the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Additionally, the cable flexible rechargeable Zn-air battery exhibits excellent bendable and durability. Density functional theory calculation is combined with operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy to further elucidate the active sites of oxygen reactions at the Co/Co-N-C cathode in Zn-air battery.

Abstract:Rechargeable zinc-air batteries need bifunctional electrocatalysts to improve the kinetics of both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we prepare a CoO@NC catalyst employing the 'carbonization-solvothermal-calcination' method, which involves affixing CoO nanosheets to the nitrogen-doped carbon matrix derived from the loofah sponge. The synergy of NC and CoO components creates abundant active sites, and their hierarchical porous structure enables the swift movement of relevant species, thus allowing the CoO@NC catalyst to display remarkable bifunctional performance with a potential difference of 0.73 V. Additionally, the CoO@NC-driven zinc-air battery exhibits a remarkable peak power density of 112.4 mW cm −2 and works reliably for more than 200 h, outperforming the commercial Pt/C-RuO 2 catalysts. This research proposes a novel strategy for constructing noble-metal-free bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Highly efficient bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are crucially important for the rechargeable Zn-air battery, a potential power source for applications in electric vehicles and grid-scale stationary storage systems. Herein, Co3O4@NiCo2O4 double-shelled nanocages (Co3O4@NiCo2O4 DSNCs) with hierarchical hollow structure and oxygen vacancies were designed and synthesized via annealing metal-organic frameworks. Co3O4@NiCo2O4 DSNCs with large specific surface area and three-dimensional interconnected mesopores and cavity not only provide more reaction sites, but also offer an efficient transport environment for reactants. Moreover, oxygen vacancies on the surfaces improve the capture of oxygen species to enhance the reactivity of the catalyst. Consequently, Co3O4@NiCo2O4 DSNCs displayed excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic performance, with a positive half-wave potential of 0.81 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE) for ORR (approaching the potential of commercial Pt/C catalyst) and a low potential of 1.65 V at 10 mA cm-2 for OER (exceeding Pt/C). In a practical demonstration, the Zn-air battery using Co3O4@NiCo2O4 DSNCs as the cathode delivered a satisfactory power density of 102.1 mW cm-2, comparable to the Zn-air battery with a Pt/C cathode, and exhibited much longer cycling stability.

Abstract:Developing high-performance and low-cost bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great significance for accelerating the commercialization of rechargeable zinc-air batteries (RZABs). Herein, in situ grown Co3O4 nanoparticle-embedded N-doped hollow porous carbon nanospheres (Co3O4@N-HPCNs) are synthesized via template-assisted pyrolysis as efficient bifunctional ORR/OER electrocatalysts. The N-HPCNs efficiently seize and confine Co3O4 nanoparticles to enhance electronic conductivity and structural stability, while the hollow porous architecture offers adequate mass diffusion pathways to improve the accessibility of reactants and electrolytes on active sites. Therefore, the as-obtained Co3O4-10%@N-HPCNs display outstanding activity and stability for the ORR and the OER, even outperforming commercial Pt/C and Ru/C catalysts. Liquid RZABs assembled with Co3O4-10%@N-HPCN cathodes exhibit a large specific capacity of 768.3 mA h g-1Zn, a high peak power density of 145.6 mW cm-2 and a long-term cycling stability for over 1000 h, demonstrating much-enhanced battery performance in comparison with that of Pt/C + Ru/C based RZABs. Also, flexible quasi-solid-state RZABs assembled with Co3O4-10%@N-HPCN cathodes exhibit a considerable power density of 132.0 mW cm-2 and a stable charge-discharge voltage for a long period even upon bending. This work provides a new approach for the development of catalysts with high activity, long-term stability and low cost.

Abstract:The rational design and synthesis of efficient and durable bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) and oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) is significant yet challenging for rechargeable Zn-air batteries. Up to now, most attention has been focused on the ORR performance, but the disproportion of OER proficiencies results in poor cycling capabilities and energy waste during charging process. Herein, a dual-active-site hierarchical composite () is constructed by anchoring high OER-active NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanosheets on the surface of ORR-active ZIF-derived carbon-based framework. This design fully utilizes their advantages and synergistic effects, such as good conductivity, hierarchical structure, ORR-active sites of Co, N-codoped carbon (Co-NC) substrate and OER-active sites of NiFe-LDH, to optimize bifunctional catalytic performance and durability in Zn-air batteries. The demonstrates a lower overpotential of 819 mV than single component Co-NC (893 mV), NiFe-LDH (1178 mV) and noble-metal catalysts (957 mV for Pt/C and 1118 mV for RuO2) in alkaline media. Impressively, a high peak power density (107.8 mW cm-2) and excellent durability (over 300 h) are exhibited by Zn-air batteries based on as electrocatalyst. This work provides a facile, low-cost and environmental-friendly strategy to synthesize bifunctional catalysts for efficient and durable zinc-air batteries.

Abstract:Multi‐dimensional hierarchical nanostructures can efficiently promote the mass transportation and electron transfer of electrocatalysts, so that can boost the electrocatalytic performance. In this study, we report the design of a hierarchical carbon/metal nanostructure (Co@CNFs) with the combination of 0D cobalt metal nanoparticles, 1D carbon nanofibers, and 2D carbon nanosheets as a bifunctional ORR/OER catalyst. The Co@CNFs catalysts are prepared by a facile approach of combining electrospinning, impregnation growth of ZIF‐67 nanosheets, and high‐temperature carbonization. Through rationally optimizing the synthesis conditions including the chemical concentration and carbonization temperature, the optimal catalyst of Co@CNFs‐50‐800 features a hierarchical structure of continuous carbon nanofibers (CNFs) anchored carbon nanosheets wrapping Co nanoparticles, which holds decent catalytic activities in term of a havewave potential of 0.8 V for ORR and a potential of 1.54 V for OER at 10 mA cm ‐2 . A rechargeable Zn‐air battery is set up using the catalyst as air cathode, which exhibits a high specific capacity of 809 mAh g ‐1 and a peak power density of 165.5 mW cm ‐2 , as well as a good durability up to 1000 charging‐discharging cycles (>160 h), which is even better than the benchmark Pt/C+RuO 2 catalyst.

Abstract:Earth-rich, durable, and efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is vitally important for the wide application of zinc-air batteries in the future. However, due to the single active site, traditional commercial benchmark catalysts typically exhibit selective activity in only one of the two reactions (ORR or OER), making it difficult to meet the dual functional catalytic requirements. Developing efficient oxygen electrocatalysts that achieve diverse active sites on a single catalyst and understanding their internal synergistic reaction activity remain a challenge. Herein, spherical hollow porous carbon matrix composites (s-Co/CoNC) with the coexistence of diverse intrinsic active sites including Co-N x and Co-O x species and metal Co nanoparticles were prepared by pyrolysis with oxygen-enriched Co-MOFs as precursor in the presence of melamine. Owing to the combined advantages of the catalyst including the great specific surface area, good conductivity, abundant diverse intrinsic active sites towards ORR and OER, and the electronic interaction among active sites and the optimized the adsorption/desorption process of oxygen species at the catalyst surface, s-Co/CoNC exhibits desirable electrocatalytic activity for both ORR and OER with an ORR half-wave potential of 0.81 V, an OER potential of 1.53 V(vs. RHE at 10 mA cm −2 ), providing a small reversible potential difference of 0.72 V, superior to the commercial noble-metal catalysts and the most reported cobalt based ORR/OER catalysts. The assembled s-Co/CoC-based rechargeable Zn-air batteries possess high peak power density of 101.7 mW cm −2 . This work provides a significant strategy for constructing high-performance dual functional catalysts for secondary Zn-air batteries.

Abstract:The oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER) are the cornerstone of metal–air batteries. The current central issue is to explore nonprecious metal based catalysts, especially bifunctional electrocatalysts with high activity for both ORR/OER processes with mild strategies. Herein, we report a facile yet scalable approach to fabricate hierarchical 3D macrosheets composed of interconnected in situ cobalt catalyzed nitrogen doped carbon nanotubes (denoted as Co@NCNT HMS) through the pyrolysis of g-C3N4@Co-glycolate microsheets, which exhibit outstanding oxygen catalysis performance. Specifically, a record low potential gap (ΔE = Ej10 − E1/2) of 0.681 V can be achieved in 1 M KOH electrolyte. Impressively, a Zn–air battery based on a Co@NCNT HMS air cathode achieves a specific capacity of 675.8 mA h g−1 and a peak power density of 159.83 mW cm−2. More importantly, the cycling stability of the rechargeable Zn–air battery is outstanding with an excellent output voltage retention (97.3% after 150 h).

Abstract:Diminishing the size of active sites in catalysts is promising to improve the kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and reduce the cost of metal–air batteries. However, the facile preparation of high-performance catalysts with nanoscale active sites still suffers from great challenge. Herein, we report a facile template-free strategy to fabricate Co single atoms and nanoparticles dispersed on porous N-doped carbon nanotube (Co-NCNT) by the pyrolysis of the composites of metal–organic complexes and porous carbon nanotube. Different from the conventional strategy, the precursor metal–organic complexes in this work were prepared under mild conditions and used without complex purification procedures. Compared with the pristine carbon nanotube, N-doped carbon nanotube with abundant mesopores contribute to the formation of nanoscale Co sites. This resultant electrocatalyst Co-NCNT shows an impressive ORR half-wave potential of 0.87 V in alkaline solution, outperforming that of commercial Pt/C (20 wt%). The catalyst Co-NCNT displays high tolerance to strong alkali solution, endowing the aqueous Zn-air batteries with high discharge voltages and power density. In addition, the specific capacity achieves 803 mAh·gZn−1 under a current density of 10 mA·cm−1. This research provides a new solution for the simple synthesis of carbon-based electrocatalysts for metal–air batteries.

Abstract:Development of bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER) are urgently needed for advanced energy storage and conversion devices including rechargeable Zn-air batteries. Herein, we put forward the design and synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes binding Co-N-C elongated hexagonal nanoplates (denoted as Co-N-C@NCNTs) through a metastable bimetallic ZnCo-ZIF-L topochemical phase conversion and subsequent pyrolysis strategy. The highly open and conductive architectures with elongated shape of carbon substrate can not only effectively prevent the agglomeration of catalytically active sites comprised of both Co nanoparticles and atomic Co-Nx species, but also accelerate the electron and ion transport during the catalytic process to improve the mass transfer efficiency, resulting in enhanced electrocatalytic performance in both activity and stability. As expected, the Co-N-C@NCNTs showed excellent bifunctional ORR/OER performance with an overpotential gap of 0.748 V and satisfied stability. Employing Co-N-C@NCNTs as air-cathode catalysts for rechargeable Zn-air batteries, the assembled cells exhibit a remarkable peak power density of 237.8 mW cm-2 and long-term cycling stability of up to 130 h.

Abstract:Abstract Developing efficient and stable multifunctional electrocatalyst is very important for zinc–air batteries in practical. Herein, semiconductive spinel CuFe 2 O 4 supported Co–N co-doped carbon (Co-NC) and CoFe alloy nanoparticles were proposed. In this strategy, the three-dimensional ordered macroporous CuFe 2 O 4 support provides rich channels for mass transmission, revealling good corrosion-resistance and durability at the same time. ZIF-67 derived Co-NC decoration improves the conductivity of the catalyst. Further, the uniformly distributed Co-NC and CoFe nanoparticles (C/CF) dramatically promote the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. Accordingly, C/CF@CuFe 2 O 4 catalyst shows remarkable bifunctional electrocatalytic activity, with an ORR half-wave potential of 0.86 V, and an OER over-potential of 0.46 V at 10 mA cm −2 . The zinc–air battery using this catalyst exhibits a power density of 95.5 mW cm −2 and a durable cyclability for over 170 h at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , which implies a great potential in practical application.

Abstract:Rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are viewed as a promising solution for electric vehicles due to their potential to provide a clean, cost-effective, and sustainable energy storage system for the next generation. Nevertheless, sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the air electrode, and low power density are significant challenges that hinder the practical application of ZABs. The key to resolving the development of ZABs is developing an affordable, efficient, and stable catalyst with bifunctional catalytic. In this study, we present a series of bifunctional catalysts composed of Co/Zn nanoparticles uniformly embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) denoted as Co/Zn@NC@MWCNTs. The incorporation of MWCNTs using a facile and non-toxic method significantly decreased the overpotential of the OER from 570 to 430 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and the peak power density from 226 to 263 mW cm-2. Besides, the electrochemical surface area measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicate that the three-dimensional (3D) network structure of MWCNTs facilitates mass transport for ORR and reduces electron transfer resistance during OER, leading to a small potential gap of 0.86 V between OER and ORR, high electron transfer number (3.92-3.98) of the ORR, and lowest Tafel slope (47.8 mV dec-1) of the OER in aqueous ZABs. In addition, in-situ Raman spectroscopy revealed a notable decrease in the ID/IG ratio for the optimally configured Co/Zn@NC@MWCNTs (75:25), indicating a reduction in defect density and improved structural ordering during the electrochemical process, which directly contributes to enhanced ORR activity. Hence, this study provides an excellent strategy for constructing a bifunctional catalyst material with a 3D MWCNTs conductive network for the development of advanced ZAB systems for sustainable energy applications.

Abstract:An ultralong N,S co‐doped carbon nano‐hollow‐sphere chain with encapsulated Co nanoparticles (Co‐CNHSC) is synthesized as a bifunctional catalyst for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by adopting a one‐step pyrolysis method. Benefiting from the electronic structure modulation between metal and nonmetal species, the optimized Co‐CNHSC‐3 exhibits an excellent bifunctional activity for OER and ORR and also shows superior performance for Zn‐air batteries. The development of simple and effective strategies to prepare electrocatalysts, which possess unique and stable structures comprised of metal/nonmetallic atoms for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), is currently an urgent issue. Herein, an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst featured by ultralong N, S‐doped carbon nano‐hollow‐sphere chains about 1300 nm with encapsulated Co nanoparticles (Co‐CNHSCs) is developed. The multifunctional catalytic properties of Co together with the heteroatom‐induced charge redistribution (i.e., modulating the electronic structure of the active site) result in superior catalytic activities toward OER and ORR in alkaline media. The optimized catalyst Co‐CNHSC‐3 displays an outstanding electrocatalytic ability for ORR and OER, a high specific capacity of 1023.6 mAh gZn−1, and excellent reversibility after 80 h at 10 mA cm−2 in a Zn‐air battery system. This work presents a new strategy for the design and synthesis of efficient multifunctional carbon‐based catalysts for energy storage and conversion devices.
Core-Shell Carbon-Based Bifunctional Electrocatalysts Derived from COF@MOF Hybrid for Advanced Rechargeable Zn-Air Batteries

Abstract:The development of highly active carbon-based bifunctional electrocatalysts for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is highly desired, but still full of challenges in rechargeable Zn-air batteries. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have gained great attention for various applications due to their attractive features of structural tunability, high surface area and high porosity. Herein, a core-shell structured carbon-based hybrid electrocatalyst (H-NSC@Co/NSC), which contains high density active sites of MOF-derived shell (Co/NSC) and COF-derived hollow core (H-NSC), is successfully fabricated by direct pyrolysis of covalently-connected COF@ZIF-67 hybrid. The core-shell H-NSC@Co/NSC hybrid manifests excellent catalytic properties toward both OER and ORR with a small potential gap (∆E = 0.75 V). The H-NSC@Co/NSC assembled Zn-air battery exhibits a high power-density of 204.3 mW cm-2 and stable rechargeability, outperforming that of Pt/C+RuO2 assembled Zn-air battery. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the electronic structure of the carbon frameworks on the Co/NSC shell can be effectively modulated by the embedded Co nanoparticles (NPs), facilitating the adsorption of oxygen intermediates and leading to enhanced catalytic activity. This work will provide a strategy to design highly-efficient electrocatalysts for application in energy conversion and storage.
High-Performance Trifunctional Electrocatalysts Based on FeCo/Co2P Hybrid Nanoparticles for Zinc-Air Battery and Self-Powered Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Currently, it is still a significant challenge to simultaneously boost various reactions by one electrocatalyst with high activity, excellent durability, as well as low cost. Herein, hybrid trifunctional electrocatalysts are explored via a facile one-pot strategy toward an efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The catalysts are rationally designed to be composed by FeCo nanoparticles encapsuled in graphitic carbon films, Co2P nanoparticles, and N,P-codoped carbon nanofiber networks. The FeCo nanoparticles and the synergistic effect from Co2P and FeCo nanoparticles make the dominant contributions to the ORR, OER, and HER activities, respectively. Their bifunctional activity parameter ( increment E) for ORR and OER is low to 0.77 V, which is much smaller than those of most nonprecious metal catalysts ever reported, and comparable with state-of-the-art Pt/C and RuO2 (0.78 V). Accordingly, the as-assembled Zn-air battery exhibits a high power density of 154 mW cm(-2) with a low charge-discharge voltage gap of 0.83 V (at 10 mA cm(-2)) and excellent stability. The as-constructed overall water-splitting cell achieves a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) (at 1.68 V), which is comparable to the best reported trifunctional catalysts.
Facile Synthesis of Vertical Layered Double Hydroxides Nanosheets on Co@Carbon Nanoframes as Robust Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalysts for Rechargeable Zn–Air Batteries

Abstract:A facile metal oxidation‐assisted strategy is developed to prepare a bifunctional electrocatalyst (Co@NC@LDHs), which exhibits robust bifunctional electrocatalytic performance for oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction, and Co@NC@LDHs‐assembled zinc–air batteries display a low charge–discharge gap, high power density, and superior durability. The development of efficient and low‐cost bifunctional catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is imperative but remains challenging in rechargeable zinc–air batteries. Herein, a metal oxidation‐assisted approach is developed for the facile synthesis of a highly efficient bifunctional catalyst (Co@NC@LDHs) which is composed of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) nanosheets in situ vertically grown on the surface of hollow carbon nanoframes encapsulating Co nanoparticles (Co@NC). Specifically, the vertical LDHs distributing on the carbon surface ensure the maximized number of accessible active sites and the interaction between LDHs with the carbon matrix. The hierarchically structured bifunctional Co@NC@LDHs display an overpotential of 0.33 V at 10 mA cm−2 for OER and a half‐wave potential of 0.88 V for ORR. The potential gap (ΔE) of Co@NC@LDHs is calculated to be 0.68 V, outperforming the mixed Pt/C + RuO2 catalysts (ΔE = 0.77 V), manifesting its superior bifunctional electrocatalysis performance. Moreover, the Zn–air batteries based on Co@NC@LDHs electrocatalyst exhibit a high peak power density (185.2 mW cm−2) and excellent durability (5.0 mA cm−2 over 500 h). This work may provide a facile strategy for the fabrication of LDHs on carbon substrate, acting as efficient catalysts for broad energy‐related applications.

Abstract:Abstractα-MnO2 nanotubes-supported Co3O4 (Co3O4/MnO2) and its carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-hybrids (Co3O4/MnO2-CNTs) have been successfully developed through a facile two-pot precipitation reaction and hydrothermal process, which exhibit the superior bi-functional catalytic activity for both ORR and OER. The high performance is believed to be induced by the hybrid effect among MnO2 nanotubes, hollow Co3O4 and CNTs, which can produce a synergetic enhancement. When integrated into the practical primary and electrochemically rechargeable Zn-air batteries, such a hybrid catalyst can give a discharge peak power density as high as 450 mW cm−2. At 1.0 V of cell voltage, a current density of 324 mA cm−2 is achieved. This performance is superior to all reported non-precious metal catalysts in literature for zinc-air batteries and significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art platinum-based catalyst. Particularly, the rechargeable Zn-air battery can be fabricated into all-solid-state one through a simple solid-state approach, which exhibits an excellent peak power density of 62 mW cm−2, and the charge and discharge potentials remain virtually unchanged during the overall cycles, which is comparable to the one with liquid electrolyte.
