Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as porous crystalline polymer materials, can provide a promising platform for high‐performance electrocatalytic CO2 reduction. This review summarizes the recent progress in COFs for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction and describes various strategies based on the characteristics of COFs, further promoting the development of this field. In current research, achieving carbon neutrality has become a primary focus through the utilization of various conversion technologies that transform carbon dioxide (CO2) into valuable chemicals or fuels. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as emerging crystalline organic polymers, offer distinct advantages in CO2 conversion compared to other materials. These advantages include controllable nanoscale pores, predefined functional units, editable framework structures, and rich conjugated systems. The unique characteristics of COFs make them highly promising electrocatalysts for CO2 conversion. This review provides a comprehensive overview of pioneering works and recent research on the utilization of COF‐based materials as electrocatalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction. This review offers a comprehensive analysis of the design principles for various reactive sites, skeleton structures, pore functionalities, 3D frameworks, morphologies, and composite materials of COFs, aiming to enhance electrocatalysis. Finally, this review presents some recommendations for material design, reaction mechanisms, and theoretical computations to enhance the understanding of reaction mechanisms further and facilitate the design of high‐performance COF‐based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:CO2 emission caused by fuel combustion and human activity has caused severe climate change and other subsequent pollutions around the world. Carbon neutralization via various novel technologies to alleviate the CO2 level in the atmosphere has thus become one of the major topics in modern research field. These advanced technologies cover CO2 capture, storage and conversion, etc., and electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) by heterogeneous catalysts is among the most promising methods since it could utilize renewable energy and generate valuable fuels and chemicals. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) represent crystalline organic polymers with highly rigid, conjugated structures and tunable porosity, which exhibit significant potential as heterogeneous electrocatalysts for CO2RR. This review briefly introduces related pioneering works in COF-based materials for electrocatalytic CO2RR in recent years and provides a basis for future design and synthesis of highly active and selective COF-based electrocatalysts in this direction.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2), as a major greenhouse gas, causes global warming and ocean acidification, and is also an important C1 resource at the same time. It is of great significance for high efficiently and selectively conversion of CO2 into high value. added chemicals using desired catalysts under mild conditions to mitigate the negative impact of CO2 on climate change and reduce the dependence on fossil energy. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a new kind of porous crystalline materials, are attractive heterogeneous catalysts due to their reusability of heterogenous as well as high selectivity and acitivity of homogenous catalysts. This review mainly focuses on the up. to. date developments of functional MOFs catalysts with emphasis on their architecture characteristics and applications in catalytic conversion of CO2. Recent research progress together with the prospect and outlook of MOFs in this field will be introduced.

Abstract:Excessive CO2 emission due to a large amount of fossil fuel utilization has become a widespread concern, which causes both environmental and energy problems. To solve these issues, electrocatalytic and photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to produce value-added chemicals have gained immense attention. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derived materials with high specific surface areas, controllable pore structures, and tunable chemical properties exhibit promising performance among the reported catalytic materials for CO2 conversion. This review describes the recent advances on the rational design and synthesis of MOF-based electrocatalysts and photocatalysts for CO2 reduction. The importance of the catalytic processes is highlighted, followed by systematic understanding of MOF-based catalysts for CO2 reduction through electrochemical and photochemical approaches. Special emphasis of this review is to introduce basic catalyst design strategies and synthesis methods as well as their resulting electrocatalysts and photocatalysts. One of the major goals is to elucidate the structures and properties that link to their catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability towards to CO2 reduction. We also outline the challenges in this research area and propose the potential strategies for the rational design and synthesis of high-performance catalysts.

Abstract:The atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) is gradually rising every year, resulting in the increasing global temperature along with thorny environmental and health issues. Up to now, considerable attention has been focused on the design and expansion of excellent heterogeneous catalysts for chemical transformation of CO2 into high value-added chemicals. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and their hybrid materials as a rapidly developing class of porous crystalline materials have been synthesized to capture and utilize CO2 as a carbon resource for multiple chemicals, such as cyclic carbonate, propiolic acid, oxazolidinone, benzimidazole and so on. Herein, we give a comprehensive summary of COFs and their hybrid materials for chemical transformation of CO2 in recent five years. Meanwhile, some representative examples are highlighted and analyzed in detail. Finally, this review also discusses opportunities and challenges in the research area.

Abstract:ConspectusThe continuing increase of the concentration of atmospheric CO2 has caused many environmental issues including climate change. Catalytic conversion of CO2 using thermochemical, electrochemical, and photochemical methods is a potential technique to decrease the CO2 concentration and simultaneously obtain value-added chemicals. Due to the high energy barrier of CO2 however, this method is still far from large-scale applications which requires high activity, selectivity, and stability. Therefore, development of efficient catalysts to convert CO2 to different products is urgent. With their well-engineered pores and chemical compositions, high surface area, elevated CO2 adsorption capability, and adjustable active sites, porous crystalline frameworks including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are potential materials for catalytic CO2 conversion. Here, we summarize our recent work on MOFs and COFs for thermocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and photocatalytic CO2 conversion and describe the structure-activity relationships that could guide the design of effective catalysts.The first section of this paper describes imidazolium-functionalized porous MOFs, including porous liquid and cationic MOFs with nucleophilic halogen ions, which can promote thermocatalytically CO2 cycloaddition reaction with epoxides toward cyclic carbonates at one bar pressure. A porous liquid MOF takes on the role of a CO2 reservoir to tackle the low local CO2 concentrations in gas-liquid-solid heterogeneous reactions. Imidazolium-functionalized MOFs with halogen ions for CO2 cycloaddition could avoid the use of cocatalysts, and this leads to milder and more facile experimental conditions and separation processes.In a section dealing with the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), we developed a series of conductive porous framework materials with fast electron transmission capabilities, which afford high current densities and outperform the traditional MOF and COF catalysts that have been reported. The intrinsically conductive two-dimensional 2D MOFs and COFs nanosheets based on the fully π-conjugated phthalocyanine motif with excellent electron transport capability were prepared, and strong electron transporters were also integrated into metalloporphyrin-based COFs for CO2RR. Cu2O quantum dots and Cu nanoparticles (NPs) can be uniformly dispersed on porous conductive MOFs/COFs to afford synergistic and/or tandem electrocatalysts, which can achieve highly selective production of CH4 or C2H4 in CO2RR.A third section describes our efforts to facilitate electron-hole separation in CO2 photocatalysis. Our focus is on regulation of coordination spheres in MOFs, fabrication of the architecture of MOF heterojunctions, and engineering MOF films to facilitate photocatalytic CO2 reduction.Finally, we discuss several problems associated with the studies of MOFs and COFs for CO2 conversion and consider some prospects of the fabrication of effective porous frameworks for CO2 adsorption and conversion.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as an emerging type of crystalline porous materials, have obtained considerable attention recently. They have exhibited diverse structure and attractive performance in various catalytic reactions. It is highly expected to have a systematic and comprehensive review summing up COFs-derived catalysts in homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, which is favorable to the judicious design of an efficient catalyst for targeted reaction. Herein, we focus on summarizing recent and significant developments in COFs materials, with an emphasis on both the synthetic strategies and targeted functionalization, and categorize it in accordance with the different types of catalytic reactions. Their potential catalysis applications are reviewed thoroughly. Moreover, a personal view about the future development of COFs catalysts with respect to the large-scale production is also discussed.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystalline networks with extended backbones cross-linked by covalent bonds. Due to the semiconductive properties and variable metal coordinating sites, along with the rapid development in linkage chemistry, the utilization of COFs in photocatalytic CO2RR has attracted many scientists' interests. In this Review, we summarize the latest research progress on variable COFs for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. In the first part, we present the development of COF linkages that have been used in CO2RR, and we discuss four mechanisms including COFs as intrinsic photocatalysts, COFs with photosensitive motifs as photocatalysts, metalated COF photocatalysts, and COFs with semiconductors as heterojunction photocatalysts. Then, we summarize the principles of structural designs including functional building units and stacking mode exchange. Finally, the outlook and challenges have been provided. This Review is intended to give some guidance on the design and synthesis of diverse COFs with different linkages, various structures, and divergent stacking modes for the efficient photoreduction of CO2.

Abstract:The rapidly rising concentration of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in the atmosphere as a result of human activity poses serious threats and alarming situations not only to humans but also to our environment. Within the context of this agenda, electrochemical CO 2 reduction to value-added chemicals is one of the most effective approaches to lowering environmental CO 2 concentrations. However, this approach requires highly robust electrocatalysts; therefore, in the last few years, there has been a dramatic increase in the demand for the synthesis and development of efficient electrocatalysts. Recently, metal-organic framework (MOF)-based materials, having high porosity, large surface area, stability, and chemical tunability, have been extensively studied as an emerging class of electrocatalysts for CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). In this article, we reviewed the fundamentals of CO 2 RR, including its mechanism and activity descriptors, and current developments in MOF-based electrocatalysts for CO 2 RR are described along with their underlying chemistry. Finally, we explore the current difficulties and potential future developments of MOFs for CO 2 RR. It is intended that this review will aid in the development of ever-more effective MOF-based materials for CO 2 abatement and raise awareness of the need for additional work to be done in order to explore MOFs' potential for tackling important environmental sustainability challenges. Particularly, ligand engineering in MOFs remains an important topic for developing a highly efficient CO 2 RR catalyst.

Abstract:Photocatalytic transformation of CO2 into clean fuels and chemicals is a promising solution to address both the energy dilemma and environmental issues. Recent years have seen several efforts to improve CO2 conversion effectiveness and selectivity by creating photocatalysts and reduction devices. An alternative to fossil fuels is urgently needed to address rising energy demand and pollution. Porous heterogeneous catalysts are gaining popularity for carbon capture, with recent breakthroughs in design and application for CO2 conversion. COFs are porous crystalline polymeric materials made up of organic module units held together by strong covalent connections. COFs have numerous applications, including adsorption and separation, detection, catalysis, optoelectronic components, energy storage, and mass transport, due to their low density, massive specific surface area, superior thermal stability, developed pore structure, long‐range sequence, from good crystallinity, and excellent tunability of monomer units. Abstract:The overuse of fossil fuels in recent years has resulted in exceedingly high carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) levels in the air, exacerbating the severe greenhouse effect. It is urgent for scientists to find ways to reduce CO 2 levels and transfer this overfull CO 2 into useful chemical products. Electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), as an efficient and clean way to reduce CO 2 concentration, can convert CO 2 into small molecules. However, the single material structure and small specific surface area of most catalysts limit their practical applications. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives are regarded as promising electrocatalysts for the CO 2 RR because of their high specific surface area, high porosity, tunable pore structure, ligand designability, and easy modification. This review covers MOF-based catalysts for CO 2 RR, such as MOF, MOF-derived materials, and MOF composites.

Abstract:As a subclass of porous framework materials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) feature permanent porosity, long-range order, and rigid backbones, and offer an important material platform for addressing the issues of global energy and environmental crisis. Along with the rapid development of physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, as well as their collaboration, this research area has witnessed a dramatic growth proceeding to wide applications including gas storage and separations, energy storage and conversion devices, drug delivery, chemical sensing, and photo/electrocatalysis. Specially, structural designability, large surface area, high porosity, and superior chemical stability make COFs ideal candidates for photocatalytic systems, and great achievement and progress have been made up to now. In this Review, the key advancements made in COF-based photocatalysis are thoroughly presented. We first highlight the design principles and strategies for COFs synthesis with a special focus on their potential for photocatalysis. Following this, various photocatalytic applications of COFs are presented, covering the topics of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, photocatalytic oxygen evolution, carbon photocatalytic dioxide reduction, photocatalytic organic transformation, and other photocatalytic reactions. Finally, the key challenges to be addressed and future avenues to be pursued are outlined, aiming to yield novel insights and contribute to game-changing innovations in this emerging area.

Abstract:To address environmental problems and growing energy demands, reducing CO2 emissions and developing sustainable clean energy are becoming increasingly crucial. In this context, carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are gaining significant attention as promising technologies for energy conversion utilizing renewable energy sources. However, developing advanced and highly efficient catalysts is essential to make these applications feasible. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a new class of porous crystalline materials, have shown great potential in designing such catalysts for CO2RR and HER. Their ordered and tailorable structures, ultrahigh surface areas, and well-defined active sites make them ideal for this purpose. This review discusses the current advances, remaining challenges and future opportunities of MOF-based catalysts in CO2RR and HER. First, the strategies for synthesizing and modifying MOF-based catalysts are overviewed, including pristine MOFs, MOF composites and MOF derivatives. Then, the advanced characterization techniques are showcased to provide reaction mechanism insights. Moreover, the recent advances of MOF-based catalysts in both CO2RR and HER are compiled in detail, highlighting the structure–activity relationship of MOF materials. Finally, the challenges and outlooks of MOF-based catalysts for CO2RR and HER are described. This review provides a systemic and in-depth insight into MOF-based catalyst for CO2RR and HER, hoping that this timely and comprehensive review can shed light on the upcoming research horizons of these prosperous areas.

Abstract:The use of fossil fuels leads to significant CO2 emissions, thus highlighting the importance for investigating the utilization of CO2 for generating high-value chemical products toward achieving the dual-carbon goal. CO2 can be efficiently used in synthesizing valuable organic compounds through C-C, C-O, C-H, and C-N bond construction, with reduction technologies effectively converting CO2 to organic carbon sources. Therefore, the research in developing environmentally friendly catalysts for efficient and renewable CO2 conversion holds great importance. New materials for catalytic conversion include zeolites, activated carbon, graphene, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), ionic liquids, semiconducting photocatalysts, single-atom catalysts (SACs), and dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs). The proper research and use of these materials can aid in the quest to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate climate change. This Review focuses on the utilization of single-atom catalysts (SACs), ionic liquids (ILs), dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs), and carbene-metal catalytic systems in CO2 conversion. The potential for new materials in catalyzing the conversion of CO2 is examined by analyzing various common chemical carbon sequestration methods, ultimately providing possible research directions for effective solutions to climate and environmental pollution problems. On the basis of the high reaction rate and high treatment efficiency of the catalyst for the catalytic conversion of CO2, the Review focuses on the simpler and more economical synthesis method of the catalyst itself and the wider application prospects.

Abstract:Efficient conversion of CO 2 to valuable fuels is a desired approach to reduce global warming effect and remit sustained fossil fuel demand. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of crystalline porous materials with unique features, have been widely studied for potential applications in varied fields. Recently, photo/electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to two or more carbons (C2+) products has attracted extensive attention because of their higher market values than one carbon (C1). However, the major products of CO 2 reduction currently are carbon monoxide, formate, or methane, which are all typical C1 products. Generally, for photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 system, relatively low efficiency of electron transfer with inadequate capability results sluggish kinetics of C−C coupling. And for electrocatalysis, high current densities curtail the stability, which limits selectivity towards C2+ products. In this review, we provide very latest reports that have make some breakthroughs to overcome the above difficulties in photo/electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to C2+ products using MOF‐based materials. Special emphases are given on design strategies of synthetic MOF‐based catalysts and the mechanisms of catalytic CO 2 to C2+ products. The challenges and prospects of photo/electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to C2+ products associated with MOF‐based materials are also discussed.

Abstract:To resolve the issues of environmental pollution and seek for sustainable clean fuels, many photocatalytic systems based on metal compounds and amorphous polymers have been studied over the past few years. However, applications of these photocatalytic systems were limited due to intrinsic drawbacks of the structures, which make the exploitation of new class of materials necessary. Recently, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) comprised of light elements, have attracted tremendous attention due to their excellent physiochemical properties. Specially, high crystallinity, good stability, intrinsic porosity and unique covalent linkages make COFs suitable for the application under harsh photocatalytic conditions. Predesigned structure of COFs provides a good platform for constructing diverse photocatalytic systems. Up to now, though the research on COFs and COFs-based photocatalysts is still in its infancy, great progress has been made especially in the H2 or O2 evolution, CO2 reduction, photocatalytic organic transformations, and elimination of organic pollutants. In this review, we focus on the developments in COFs-based photocatalytic materials and analyze the relationship between the predesigned COFs structures and their photocatalytic properties. Moreover, we elaborate the strategies for enhancing catalytic activities of COFs-based photocatalysts. Finally, the perspectives on new opportunities and challenges in the field are discussed.

Here, we fabricated a series of composite nanomaterials through template-oriented polymerization of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with isolated cobalt porphyrin units on amino-functionalized carbon nanotubes for efficient electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). Compared with pure COFs, the hybrid form of ultrathin COF nanolayers wrapped on the conductive scaffold leads to distended current density and stable Faradaic efficiency for CO2-to-CO conversion over a wide potential range. Specifically, the catalytic performances of the system can be finely optimized by the modification of the reticular structure with different functional groups. Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of CO2 to high-value carbon-based chemicals provides a sustainable approach to achieving an artificial carbon cycle. In the decade, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a kind of porous crystalline porous materials featuring well-defined structures, large surface area, high porosity, diverse components, easy tailorability, and controllable morphology, have attracted considerable research attention, serving as electrocatalysts to drive CO2 reduction. In this review, the reaction mechanisms of electrochemical CO2 reduction and the structure/component advantages of MOFs meeting the requirements of electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction are analyzed. After that, the representative progress for the precise fabrication of MOF-based electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction, focusing on catalytic site design and microenvironment modulation, are systemically summarized. Furthermore, the emerging applications and promising research for more practical scenarios related to electrochemical CO2 conversion are specifically proposed. Finally, the remaining challenges and future outlook of MOFs for electrochemical CO2 reduction are further discussed.

Abstract:Excessive fossil fuel consumption has led to a rapid increase in CO 2 concentration, posing a threat to the global environment. The electrochemical conversion of CO 2 back into valuable carbon-containing products offers a promising solution; however the lack of efficient electrocatalysts remains a challenge for high-efficiency CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising electrocatalysts owing to their superior activity and well-defined active sites and are recognized as model electrocatalysts for the fundamental study of electrocatalytic reaction mechanisms. In this review, focusing on the roles of metals and the coordination environment, we have discussed the molecular engineering of MOF electrocatalysts for the CO 2 RR, including regulation of metal nodes, modulation of surrounding organic ligands, and post-modification of MOFs. In addition, stability of MOFs and transformation strategies through the wet chemistry method and pyrolysis treatment to obtain MOF derivatives are summarized. Metal centers and the coordination environment of N atoms and other heteroatoms of MOF derivatives are discussed for their performance in the CO 2 RR. Furthermore, computational simulations and advanced characterization studies are also summarized to understand the correlation between the structure and performance of MOFs and their derivatives. By overviewing the progress and current challenges of MOF electrocatalysts and their derivatives for the CO 2 RR, we are aiming to provide insights into design principles and propose future directions for high-efficiency electrocatalysts, paving the way toward carbon neutrality.

Abstract:Converting CO2 into valuable energy and chemicals is an effective way to solve environmental problems and energy crises. Compared with other CO2 conversion methods, electrocatalytic CO2 conversion can be combined with clean energy, enhancing its energy efficiency, environmental friendliness, and sustainability; the process can be improved significantly. In recent years, the self-assembly of metal ions/clusters and organic ligands to form crystalline compounds, known as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), has attracted considerable attention. These materials have gained prominence due to their diverse range of potential applications and distinctive properties. This Review briefly introduces the basic principles of electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 and the composition and properties of MOF materials. It summarizes the research progress of MOFs in the field of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction from the following aspects: pristine MOF catalysts, MOF-based composites, and MOF-derived electrocatalysts. Finally, the development prospects of MOFs are discussed in combination with the current research status, providing a reference for the development of more efficient and stable MOF electrocatalysts.
