Abstract:Measures for the improvement of acoustic conditions in the vicinity of roads include the construction of pavement structures with low-noise surfaces with optimal macrotexture and the highest possible sound absorption coefficient. Laboratory evaluation of acoustic properties of a designed asphalt mixture before its placement in the pavement is a good solution. Currently, the most popular method for the determination of the sound absorption coefficient of various construction materials under laboratory conditions is the Kundt’s tube test. Sound absorption coefficient can also be assessed based on field and laboratory measurements performed using a Spectronics ACUPAVE System. Other parameters characterising the acoustic properties of road pavement courses include air void content and water drainability or permeability. The article presents an analysis of results of sound absorption coefficient obtained using a Spectronics ACUPAVE System and water drainability and permeability of poroelastic mixtures obtained both in laboratory and on test sections, in relation to air void content and grading of the mixtures. It was established that poroelastic mixtures containing an aggregate of maximum particle size of 5 mm are characterised by better acoustic properties than mixtures with a maximum aggregate particle size of 8 mm. Changes of crumb rubber aggregate grading and bitumen type (within the tested range of values) as well as the addition of lime have shown no evident influence on the sound absorption coefficient. Noise level values at the speed of 30 km/h according to the CPX method were measured as well. Relationships between sound absorption coefficient, water drainability/permeability, and air void content were determined. The performed analyses confirmed that Spectronics ACUPAVE System may be applied for evaluation of acoustic properties of asphalt mixtures in laboratory conditions, but further research is needed to reduce the uncertainty of the results.

Abstract:The sound absorption coefficient was evaluated for the acoustic performance of the pavement in many studies, which is an evaluation index generated by the non-contact interaction between the tyre and pavement. The impedance tube is not enough to simulate the noise of tyre/pavement interaction. This paper presents the findings of a lab and field evaluation of noise characteristics of porous asphalt pavement on the use of the tyre-rolling-down (TRD) and impedance tube methods as well as OBSI method. The effect of different factors (pavement type, pavement thickness, void ratio, maximum nominal particle size) on the pavement noise were investigated by TRD. It is well synchronised with the impedance tube test and a comprehensive pavement noise evaluation method is formed in lab. Combined with the Grey correlation analysis methods, influence degree of four parameters were analysed and then the correlation between noise level and sound absorption coefficient is tried to establish. Then, the effects of lane distribution and aging, abrasion of road on noise were also investigated at two test sections of in service highway. The lab results demonstrated that A-weighted SPL and maximum absorption coefficient showed better negative correlation under different porosity conditions compared to average absorption coefficient.

Investigation on an Absorbing Layer Suitable for a Noise-Reducing Two-Layer Pavement

Abstract:A polyurethane-based rubber-modified layer within a road superstructure leads to absorption of traffic emissions. Noise emissions have quite a negative effect on society, as they lead to high stress levels and health risks for people. Therefore, constructional methods of noise-reducing road layers have been developed before. This research paper focuses on the questions whether the existing noise-reducing road constructions, which have a low durability, can be optimized in terms of a longer duration while simultaneously maintaining the noise-reducing effects. Within this research, a large parametric study contributed to an optimal solution of a noise-reducing and durable layer. We found that noise absorption is mainly dependent of the void content of the pavement and its flexibility. Also, a result is that the durability of a road layer is based on the properties of the binder as well as the composition of the mixture, i.e., the grading curve. As we used polyurethane binders within our mixtures, which have a low dependency on regular environmental temperatures after their complete chemical reaction, we can imply a low temperature dependence of the entire polyurethane asphalt mixture. Based on these results, the construction of a noise-reducing and durable road layer is a great solution. The application of such road layers leads to lower traffic emissions at major hotspots. These might be urban highways, where the infrastructure is too tight to build noise barriers, enclosures or tunnels.

Abstract:Noise associated with road infrastructure is a prominent problem in environmental acoustics, and its implications with respect to human health are well documented. Objective and repeatable methodologies are necessary for testing the efficacy of sustainable noise mitigation methods such as low noise emission pavement. The Controlled Pass-By (CPB) method is used to measure the sound generated by passing vehicles. Despite its popularity, the applicability of CPB is compromised in urban contexts, as its results depend on test site conditions, and slight changes in the experimental setup can compromise repeatability. Moreover, physical conditions, reduced space, and urban elements risk confine its use to only experimental road sites. In addition, vehicle speed represents a relevant factor that further contributes to the method's inherent instability. The present paper aims to extend the applicable range of this method and to provide more reliable results by proposing an adjusted CPB method. Furthermore, CPB metrics such as LAmax do not consider the travelling speed of the vehicle under investigation. Our proposed method can yield an alternative metric that takes into account the duration of the noise event. A hypothetical urban case is investigated, and a signal processing pipeline is developed to properly characterize the resulting data. Speed cushions, manhole covers, and other spurious effects not related to the pass-by sound emissions of ordinary vehicles are pinpointed as well.

Abstract:Pavements are made up of several layers with different mechanical and functional characteristics. The correct design of the surface layer of a road may lead to pavements with better characteristics regarding the ride quality and the safety, but also pavements that may reduce noise. The use of low-noise pavements may be an effective measure to reduce the acoustic pollution generated by road traffic. This work aims to assess some functional characteristics of a rehabilitated urban street, after two months in service conditions. The pavement was fabricated with a gap-graded bituminous mixture of Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) type with crumb rubber (CR) from end-of-life (EOL) tires. This work studies the acoustic performance of the pavement, as well as other surface characteristics, such as the macrotexture depth (MPD) and the unevenness (IRI), establishing the relationship between them and the tire/road noise at different frequencies. Finally, the main vertical acceleration frequencies of the pavement/vehicle system at a driving speed of 50 km/h are also assessed and related to the pavement unevenness and conservation. According to the results, this mixture might be used as a noise mitigation measure within the Action Plans of urban areas with problems related to noise. It is observed that the macrotexture depth of the mixture contributes to its acoustic performance at low frequencies; however, the tire/road noise generated cannot be totally explained from a macrotexture point of view.

Abstract:Existing low-noise pavement has gradually lost its function with the development of urban road traffic. A poroelastic road surface (PERS), mainly composed of tire rubber granules, polyurethane, and aggregate, is considered to be the material with the most potential to construct future low-noise pavements. This study aims to optimize the material composition of PERS to improve the mechanical and acoustic properties further. The orthogonal experiments of three factors with three levels were designed to evaluate the effects of the composition design of PERS on rutting resistance, skid resistance, moisture resistance, and aging resistance. To ensure the acoustic properties, the selected initial composition was optimized through the tire free-drop test and transfer-function method. In this study, the Pearson correlation coefficient ( r ) was used to describe the correlations between the properties of PERS and material composition. It was concluded that skid and moisture resistance are largely influenced by polyurethane content. Meanwhile, the rubber content is significant for rutting resistance, aging resistance, and damping property. Acoustic experiments indicate that rubber particles show a significant effect on the sound absorption property. Results demonstrate that the optimal material composition of PERS is 5.5% polyurethane content, 10% rubber content, and 1.18 mm rubber particles, with a 60 mm thickness.

Experimental Analysis of Noise Characteristics on Different Types of Pavements inside and outside Highway Tunnels

Abstract:Aiming to reduce noise pollution and optimize the acoustic quality in highway tunnels, the noise characteristics on different types of pavements were analyzed and compared in this research, based on the on-site noise measurement in two tunnels with the free fields as a control group. Specifically, the noise characteristics include two aspects: various noise and noise time attenuation performance. Various noise includes on-board sound intensity (OBSI) noise and cabin noise. The noise time attenuation performance uses the indicator of reverberation time. Three types of pavements were measured, including dense-graded asphalt concrete (DAC) and single-layered and double-layered porous asphalt (PA) pavement. The results showed that, for the same type of pavement, compared with the free fields, the difference in OBSI noise in tunnels was within a range of less than 1 dBA; the cabin noise increased by 3.4 dBA~6.6 dBA. The noise level in tunnels was greater than that outside tunnels, and the longer tunnel exhibited higher traffic noise and worse noise time attenuation performances. For the same tunnel, PA pavement could reduce the cabin noise by 3.8 dBA~6.7 dBA. PA pavement also exhibited shorter reverberation time. The application of PA pavement could effectively improve the acoustic quality in the tunnel. This research contributes to noise pollution abatement and the improvement of the comfort and safety of drivers in tunnels.

Abstract:Road traffic noise is the most common source of environmental pollution in urban areas, and therefore, the study of noise mitigation actions is fundamental for urban planning. The use of low noise road surfaces is one of the most widespread intervention since it acts directly on the source of road traffic noise, represented by tyre/road interaction. In this work, the interaction between texture and tyre/road noise was studied from an experimental point of view, by comparing CPX and road texture measurements on rubberised and standard road surfaces. Tyre deformation was addressed by taking into account the indenter method proposed by Sandberg and Goubert in 2018. Regressions of CPX and enveloped road texture levels were performed separating rubberised from reference surfaces, and parallelism tests were performed on the slopes. Results show that the use of rubber influences the interaction of road texture and noise, especially at high frequencies.

Abstract:Road noise constitutes one of the most adverse impacts of road traffic on the environment. Noise that is particularly annoying for local inhabitants is recorded in the vicinity of engineering structures where various types of expansion joints are used [1–3]. There are currently many road connections being built in Poland, including a total of almost ten thousand expansion joints. The authors of this article attempt to determine the noise differences of several of the most commonly used expansion joints – single-, double-, and multi-module, block and finger expansion joint described as one of the most advantageous from the acoustic point of view. This study also attempts to determine the im-pact of expansion joint types on the noise level in comparison to the road section not equipped with these devices, which was adopted as the base noise level.
Influence of texturing method on tyre/road noise of cement concrete pavement

Abstract:The texture of pavements influences the tyre/road noise. This refers especially to cement concrete pavements. This article presents the results of studies on sound level on concrete pavements in Poland, which were textured using burlap drag, broom drag and exposed aggregate methods. It was established that on exposed aggregate cement concrete, the maximum aggregate size, which is a key factor in the surface’s macrotexture, has a significant influence on tyre/road noise. It should not exceed 8 mm in the upper layer. When using aggregate size 11 mm, the maximum sound level of a passing-by car increases by approximately 2 dB. Pavements textured using the broom drag and burlap drag methods turned out to be not a beneficial solution due to the sound levels emitted by heavy vehicles moving at a speed above 80 kph. Pavement texturing using the transverse broom drag emits sound levels from heavy vehicles which are approximately 3 dB higher in comparison to values noted on SMA11. The methods of pavement texturing using diamond grinding, used in some countries, point towards the possibility of obtaining beneficial acoustic properties.

Abstract:Traffic noise is a major problem in all large cities. The surface acoustical characteristics (e.g. referred to roads, pedestrian traffic areas, building façades, building surfaces, in general) affect the noise propagation in the urban environment. Through a better outdoor design and management (e.g. by means of green areas, porous asphalt, speed control), or building refurbishment actions (acoustic plaster, absorbing shading devices), the increasing of surface absorption could be useful to mitigate noise environmental pollution, and therefore to reduce the sound levels in the proximity of the building façades for their entire height. The reduction of the noise levels outside the buildings would determine lower indoor noise levels, and therefore a better situation, without direct actions on the building walls. Through a series of noise propagation calculations in urban environments, by means of a three-dimensional simulation model, the influence of some configurations and the potential impact of some intervention solutions are quantified. In the first stage of the research, the analysis of a simplified model is conducted, to evaluate the influence of noise on the building façades, based on a simplified geometry of the urban environment and of the surface acoustic features. The same analysis is validated by means of a more detailed model, corresponding to the configuration of an existing built area, to verify if the analyses performed by means of the simplified model can be extended to more complex layouts. Successively, calculations are developed to quantify the noise levels that occur with different acoustic (absorption of façades, soil, asphalt, or green elements) and geometric (road width, buildings height, presence of balconies, etc.) characteristics to show the potential reduction given by some interventions. Solutions that can lead to a more significant reduction of the noise in correspondence of the façades are then summarized. The simplified geometrical model appears to be suitable for preliminary investigations as the maximum error found for narrower roads is equal to 17%.
Influence of the Acoustic Cover of the Modular Expansion Joint on the Acoustic Climate in the Bridge Structure Surroundings

Abstract:The noise generated at the interface between the wheels of vehicles and the road surface is well recognized in the literature worldwide. Many publications describe the phenomenon of reducing this kind of impact by silent road surfaces. A specific type of this noise is the sound generated by vehicles passing over the expansion joints of bridge structures. Due to the impulsive nature of this sound, it is very onerous for people living in the close vicinity of bridge structures. The passage of vehicles over expansion joints causes the formation of vibrations that are transmitted to the structural elements of bridge structures, which may cause the formation of the material sounds (especially arduous in the case of bridges with steel elements). An attempt to reduce this impact was made by making a prototype acoustic cover of the expansion joint on the selected bridge. The paper presents the results of research on the "in situ" acoustic effectiveness of this cover. Additionally, the noise was modelled in the object surroundings before and after the cover's application. The acoustic efficiency of the cover in the whole measured frequency range was 5.3 dBA. In the narrower frequency bands (1/3 octave bands), larger sound level reductions were observed. The maximum sound levels measured under the tested dilatation were less than 10.0 dBA lower than the maximum sound levels measured under the reference dilatation.
Influence of texture on tyre road noise spectra in rubberized pavements

Abstract:Road traffic noise is the most common source of environmental pollution in urban areas and therefore, the study of noise mitigation actions is fundamental for urban planning. The main source of road traffic noise is tyre/road interaction; thus, the use of low noise road surfaces represents an optimal solution for its mitigation. Several studies tried to find a correlation between road texture and broadband noise data, trying to provide guidelines for the development of acoustically optimised road surfaces.The present work studies the correlation between road texture and tyre/road noise from an experimental point of view, by analysing texture and noise spectra on ten different road surfaces. Tyre deformation has also been addressed by analysing two already existing tyre envelopment algorithms. The first algorithm, proposed by Von Meier and based on the limitation of the second order derivative of the profile signal, shows poor correlation with high frequency noise, while the second algorithm, based on a novel method proposed by Sandberg and Goubert and called indenter method, enhances correlation with low frequency noise and preserves information at higher frequencies. Correlation patterns show that rolling noise can be separated in three main contributions: low, middle and high frequency noise. Finally, experimental tyre/road noise and enveloped texture data obtained with the indenter algorithm have been used to elaborate a linear model that relates low and high frequency noise to texture one-third octave bands. This model deepens knowledge on tyre/road interaction.

Abstract:Abstract Deoxythymidine kinase has been purified about 130-fold from calf thymus by fractionation with streptomycin, ammonium sulfate, and protamine and by gel filtration chromatography. The molecular weight of deoxythymidine kinase was estimated to be about 55,000 by gel filtration and sucrose density gradient centrifugation. The apparent Km values for deoxythymidine and ATP were 57 and 50 µm, respectively. Among the naturally occurring nucleosides, only deoxythymidine and deoxyuridine were active as phosphate acceptors. All common nucleoside 5'-triphosphates, except dTTP, were active as phosphate donors. Deoxynucleotide derivatives of thymine were inhibitors of deoxythymidine kinase, the potency of inhibition being in the order of dTTP g dTDP g dTMP. The inhibition produced by dTTP appeared to be competitive with respect to the phosphate acceptor, deoxythymidine. With respect to the phosphate donor, the inhibition produced by dTTP was more complex, being noncompetitive at low concentrations of ATP and competitive at high concentrations of ATP. Substrates, products, and nucleotide inhibitors partially protected the enzyme from heat inactivation. Initial velocity patterns suggested that the reaction catalyzed by deoxythymidine kinase follows a sequential mechanism.

Abstract:Carrying out repair works, reconstruction, and construction of new road surfaces is a permanent element of urban space. The quality of the new pavement for the adopted traffic category directly impacts the road infrastructure's durability. The choice of road surface structure depends on the adopted traffic category. The aim of the article is to assess the works carried out on selected road surfaces within the city of Płock (Poland) in terms of the technical specification requirements and the durability of road infrastructure. The paper presents the tests of three road layers: base layer, binding layer and wearing course. The tests were carried out on 11 streets, and 29 samples were collected.

Abstract:The almost unlimited possibilities of modern computational tools create the temptation to study phenomena related to the operation of engineering objects exclusively using complex numerical simulations. However, the fascination with multi-parametric complex computational models, whose solutions are obtained using iterative techniques, may result in qualitative discrepancies between reality and virtual simulations. The need to verify on real objects the conclusions obtained from numerical calculations is therefore indisputable. The enormous cost and uniqueness of large-scale test stands significantly limit the possibility of conducting tests under real conditions. The solution may be an experiment focused on testing features relevant to the given task, while minimising the dimensions of the objects under consideration. Such conditions led to the concept of conducting a series of field experiments to verify the effectiveness of prototype track components, which were developed using numerical simulations to reduce the noise caused by passing trains. The main aim of this study is to examine the acoustic efficiency of prototype porous concrete sound absorbing panels, in relation to the ballasted and ballastless track structures. Presented results of the proposed unconventional experiments carried out on an improvised test stand using the recorded acoustic signals confirm the effectiveness of the developed vibroacoustic isolators.

Noise Reduction Characteristics of Macroporous Asphalt Pavement Based on A Weighted Sound Pressure Level Sensor

Abstract:Based on the manual of macroporous noise-reducing asphalt pavement design, the indoor main drive pavement function accelerated loading test system was applied to investigate the impact of speed, loading conditions (dry and wet) and structural depth on the noise reduction of macroporous Open Graded Friction Course (OGFC) pavement, as well as its long-term noise reduction. Combined with the noise spectrum of the weighted sound pressure level, the main components and sensitive frequency bands of pavement noise under different factors were analyzed and compared. According to experimental results, the noise reduction effect of different asphalt pavements from strong to weak is as follows: OGFC-13 > SMA-13 > AC-13 > MS-III. The noise reduction effect of OGFC concentrates on the frequency of 1–4 kHz when high porosity effectively reduces the air pump effect. As the effect of wheels increases and the depth of the road structure decreases, the noise reduction effect of OGFC decreases. It indicates the noise reduction performance attenuates at a later stage, similar to the noise level of densely graded roads.

Abstract:Using data on in situ performance of low noise pavements, three well performing mixtures were selected: SDA 4, SDA 6, and SDA 8. These mixtures and the corresponding mastic (filler + bitumen + additive) were tested for their mechanical and acoustic performance in non-aged and aged states using a multi-scale approach (mm to km). Thereafter, an optimization protocol was applied to these mastics (mm-scale) and promising combinations were implemented at the mixture scale (cm-scale). As a result, the best performing mixture parameters were implemented in the m-scale slabs where the mechanical and acoustic performance were determined. The proposed work could uniquely combine knowledge from in situ long term and laboratory performance of low noise pavements. Using a traffic simulator and measurements before and after trafficking, the acoustic modeling showed that the modified mixtures' noise levels were maintained after loading. This indicates that the modification assured acoustical integrity of the mixture after loading.

Abstract:The paper presents results of tyre/road noise and rolling resistance measurements performed on stone mastics asphalt (SMA) that contains rubberised asphalt, developed and produced by a refinery in Poland. Bituminous binder was modified with polymer and addition of crumb rubber. The first observations of asphalt mixture with the new kind of modified bitumen used on the field section are presented. Rolling resistance of passenger car tyres was measured by test trailer R2 Mk.2. Tyre/road noise was measured by a Tiresonic Mk.4 trailer using the close proximity method. Measurements were performed for 50 and 80 km/h and the results obtained on test and reference sections covered with conventional SMA 11 were compared.

Abstract:In order to effectively control tire-pavement noise in long freeway tunnels, this study aims to determine suitable low-noise pavement texture. The main indicators evaluated include texture parameters, A-weighted sound pressure level, octave, sideway force coefficient and the actual unit cost of building single texture. Sound signals at the tire-pavement interface are detected by the OBSI system without the influence of other nearby sources, then acquired by Dewesoft system and sent to a laptop computer for post-processing on Coinv DESPET software platform. The continuous friction tester is used to measure sideway force coefficient on each pavement surface at same vehicle speed. All testing efforts are based on previous investigation sections and two specially constructed long freeway tunnel sections with various specific textures. Afterwards, the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution, is adopted for the final comprehensive evaluation. The study found that the freeway tunnel is a hostile acoustic environment. The tire-pavement noise inside the tunnel is about 20 dB(A) higher than the external normal sections, whether it is asphalt pavement or cement concrete pavement. In addition, the longitudinal equidistant groove with large center spacing of 25 cm, not only help eliminates the pumping noise but prevents the side sliding of vehicles, is considered to be an effective technique on the premise considering economic cost. Also note that, the section near the tunnel entrance belongs to the transition zone of tire-pavement noise and a bottom area of skid resistance. The transverse unequal spacing groove can yet be regarded as a suitable choice for this section and wet section inside the tunnel. What is more, an interesting finding is that there is no direct correlation between tire-pavement noise and sideway force coefficient, regardless of groove textures. This means that a quieter pavement texture can be obtained without hindering the skid resistance. In this sense, the findings of this study may provide a little practical reference to create a "quiet, safe," surface texture suitable for the long freeway tunnels.
