Abstract:The unique amino acid composition and spatial structure of silk fibroin make it an excellent biomaterial with perfect biocompatibility and biodegradability.Silk fibroin nanofibers and composite fibroin nanofibers prepared via high voltage electrostatic spinning technology are conferred further superior property for application as biomedical materials.This review systematically introduces advances in application and modification of the electrospun silk fibroin nanofibers and composite fibroin nanofibers in bone tissue engineering,in repair of cartilage,wound,nerve and blood vessel,and in controlled release of drugs in recent years,based on which key innovations for future development of electrospun silk fibroin nanofiber materials are briefly discussed.

As a versatile natural polymer, silk fibroin has been combined with various nanoparticles. The introduction of nanoparticles brings many optimized and new functionalities to silk fibroin, such as mechanical, biological, thermal, electrical, florescent and magnetical properties. This review focuses on the preparation methods and enhanced properties of silk fibroin-nanoparticle composites, especially their biomedical applications.

Abstract:Electrospinning is a very effective method to fabricate nanofibers. This technique has been achieved more attention due to its cheap cost, simple device and obtaining nanofibers similar to extracellular matrix.Silk fibroin(SF) is a natural protein with good biodegradability and low immunogenicity, Therefore, it can be widely applied in tissue engineering. In this paper, we summarize the research of electrospun silk fibrion nanofibers in regenerative medicine. Furthermore, the future research work of SF nanofibers was suggested.

Abstract:Nanotechnology is one of the most promising technologies available today, holding tremendous potential for biomedical and healthcare applications. In this field, there is an increasing interest in the use of polymeric micro/nanofibers for the construction of biomedical structures. Due to its potential applications in various fields like pharmaceutics and biomedicine, the electrospinning process has gained considerable attention for producing nano-sized fibers. Electrospun nanofiber membranes have been used in drug delivery, controlled drug release, regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, biosensing, stent coating, implants, cosmetics, facial masks, and theranostics. Various natural and synthetic polymers have been successfully electrospun into ultrafine fibers. Although biopolymers demonstrate exciting properties such as good biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and biodegradability, they possess poor mechanical properties. Hybrid nanofibers from bio and synthetic nanofibers combine the characteristics of biopolymers with those of synthetic polymers, such as high mechanical strength and stability. In addition, a variety of functional agents, such as nanoparticles and biomolecules, can be incorporated into nanofibers to create multifunctional hybrid nanofibers. Due to the remarkable properties of hybrid nanofibers, the latest research on the unique properties of hybrid nanofibers is highlighted in this study. Moreover, various established hybrid nanofiber fabrication techniques, especially the electrospinning-based methods, as well as emerging strategies for the characterization of hybrid nanofibers, are summarized. Finally, the development and application of electrospun hybrid nanofibers in biomedical applications are discussed.

Abstract:Herbal medicine has a long history of medical efficacy with low toxicity, side effects and good biocompatibility. However, the bioavailability of the extract of raw herbs and bioactive compounds is poor because of their low water solubility. In order to overcome the solubility issues, electrospinning technology can offer a delivery alternative to resolve them. The electrospun fibers have the advantages of high specific surface area, high porosity, excellent mechanical strength and flexible structures. At the same time, various natural and synthetic polymer-bound fibers can mimic extracellular matrix applications in different medical fields. In this paper, the development of electrospinning technology and polymers used for incorporating herbal medicine into electrospun nanofibers are reviewed. Finally, the recent progress of the applications of these herbal medicine nanofibers in biomedical (drug delivery, wound dressing, tissue engineering) and food fields along with their future prospects is discussed.

Abstract:Electrospun nanofibers hold a great potential in biomedical applications due to their advantages of large specific surface area, good biocompatibility, easy fabrication and surface modification. In particular, organic/inorganic hybrid nanofibers exhibit enhanced mechanical properties and long-term sustained release or controlled release profile of encapsulated drugs, which enables hybrid nanofibers to serve as desired platform for drug delivery and tissue engineering applications. This review summarizes the recent progresses in the preparation, performances and applications of hybrid nanofibers as drug delivery vectors for antibacterial and antitumor therapy, and as nanofibrous scaffolds for bone tissue engineering or other types of tissue engineering applications. Nanofibers doped with various types of inorganic nanoparticles (e.g., halloysite, laponite®, nano-hydroxyapatite, attapulgite, carbon nanotubes, and graphene, etc.) are introduced and summarized in detail. Abstract:Nanomedicine is a new discipline resulting from the combination of nanotechnology and biomedicine. Nanomedicine has contributed to the development of new and improved treatments, diagnoses, and therapies. In this field, nanoparticles have notable importance due to their unique properties and characteristics, which are useful in different applications, including tissue engineering, biomarkers, and drug delivery systems. Electrospinning is a versatile technique used to produce fibrous mats. The high surface area of the electrospun mats makes them suitable for applications in fields using nanoparticles. Electrospun mats are used for tissue engineering, wound dressing, water-treatment filters, biosensors, nanocomposites, medical implants, protective clothing materials, cosmetics, and drug delivery systems. The combination of nanoparticles with nanofibers creates hybrid systems that acquire properties that differ from their components' characteristics. By utilizing nanoparticles and nanofibers composed of dissimilar polymers, the two synergize to improve the overall performance of electrospinning mats and nanoparticles. This review summarizes the hybrid systems of polymeric nanoparticles and polymeric nanofibers, critically analyzing how the combination improves the properties of the materials and contributes to the reduction of some disadvantages found in nanometric devices and systems.

Abstract:Electrospun polymer micro/nanofibers have been widely explored as platforms for controlled delivery of therapeutic agents. Electrospun fibers are featured by large surface area, high porosity, and tunable morphology, which can be manipulated to fabricate micro/nanofibers with appropriate physicochemical properties, degradation kinetics, and drug release profiles. Many therapeutic agents can be separately or simultaneously loaded by electrospun fibers in the application of cancer therapy, adhesion prevention, wound repair, and regeneration of bone and nerve. In this review, we mainly introduce the basic principles of electrospinning, and the mechanisms and applications of electrospun micro/nanofibers for delivery of small molecule drugs, proteins, and nucleic acids in the healthcare field.

Abstract:Engineered nanofibers are generally focused on filtration, solar cells, sensors, smart textile fabrication, tissue engineering, etc. Electrospun nanofibers have potential advantages in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, because of the ease in the incorporation of drugs, growth factors, natural materials, and inorganic nanoparticles in to these nanofiber scaffolds. Electrospun nanofiber scaffolds composed of synthetic and natural polymers are being explored as scaffolds similar to natural extracellular matrix for tissue engineering. The requirement of the inorganic composites in the nanofiber scaffolds for favouring hard and soft tissue engineering applications is dealt in detail in the present review. Regarding drug delivery applications of the composite nanofibers, the review emphasizes on wound healing with silver nanoparticles incorporated nanofibers, bone tissue engineering, and cancer chemotherapy with titanium and platinum complexes loaded nanofibers. The review also describes gold nanoparticle loaded nanofibers for cancer diagnosis and cosmetic applications.

Abstract:Non-invasive medical nanofiber technology, characterized by its high specific surface area, biocompatibility, and porosity, holds significant potential in various medical domains, including tissue repair and biosensing. It is increasingly becoming central to healthcare by offering safer and more efficient treatment options for contemporary medicine. Numerous studies have explored non-invasive medical nanofibers in recent years, yet a comprehensive overview of the field remains lacking. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive summary of the applications of electrospun nanofibers in non-invasive medical fields, considering multiple aspects and perspectives. Initially, we introduce electrospinning nanofibers. Subsequently, we detail their applications in non-invasive health, including health monitoring, personal protection, thermal regulation, and wound care, highlighting their critical role in improving human health. Lastly, this paper discusses the current challenges associated with electrospun nanofibers and offers insights into potential future development trajectories.

Abstract:Within the past few years electrospinning has been paid much attention due to the increasing interests of the researchers in the nanotechnology and the unique properties of the nanomaterials. This review focused on the electrospinning behaviors of biomacromolecules including synthetic biomedical polymers, natural-occurring biopolymer and the composite nanofibrous membranes. The electrospinning parameters of the biomacromolecules and the properties of the electrospun membranes such as the morphological stability, mechanical properties and degradation behavior were discussed in details. In addition, the application of the electrospun membranes for controlled drug release was also included. The incorporation method and the release behavior of the drugs were discussed and summarized, according to the solubility of the drugs.

Abstract:Considering the metal-based nanocrystal (NC) hierarchical structure requirements in many real applications, starting from basic synthesis principles of electrostatic spinning technology, the formation of functionalized fibrous materials with inorganic metallic and semiconductor nanocrystalline materials by electrostatic spinning synthesis technology in recent years was reviewed. Several typical electrostatic spinning synthesis methods for nanocrystalline materials in polymers are presented. Finally, the specific applications and perspectives of such electrostatic spun nanofibers in the biomedical field are reviewed in terms of antimicrobial fibers, biosensing and so on.

Abstract:Supramolecular-based nanofibers, which successfully combine the unique properties of supramolecular interactions with the advantages of nanofibrous structure, are widely used in a variety of biomedical applications such as controlled drug delivery. Compared with traditional polymer nanofibers, supramolecular-based nanofibers can overcome the bottleneck of sensitivity because of the non-covalent binding modes, and therefore match the requirements of rapid and reversible response to the external stimuli. In addition, supramolecular-based nanofibers can achieve extra controllable and dynamic responsive (e.g. pH, temperature) functions in different environments. In this review, we retrospected and summarized the recent development of supramolecular-based nanofibers, focusing particularly on electrospun supramolecular nanofibers, while also touching on the advances of directly self-assembled supramolecular nanofibers without the use of electrospinning. Furthermore, we discussed the potential biomedical applications of supramolecular nanofibers. Finally, this review was concluded by elaborating upon individual reflection on the current situation, forecasting the future trend of this promising material.

Since its invention, electrospinning has been utilized to prepare nanofibers from several natural polymers and synthetic polymers for use as scaffolds in tissue engineering, regeneration, and biomedical applications. Furthermore, complex scaffolds were prepared by electrospinning complex polymer solutions formulated by blending natural and synthetic organic polymers with bioceramics and other inorganic molecules. Lately, coaxial electrospinning has emerged as a promising technology in the preparation of drug‐loaded biodegradable core‐shell structured micro/nanofibers for sustained drug delivery applications. This paper will discuss the basic mechanism of electrospinning, parameters governing the electrospinning process, various materials investigated for use in the electrospinning process, and its recent advances.

Abstract:Electrospinning is a popular and effective method of producing porous nanofibers with a large surface area, superior physical and chemical properties, and a controllable pore size. Owing to these properties, electrospun nanofibers can mimic the extracellular matrix and some human tissue structures, based on the fiber configuration. Consequently, the application of electrospun nanofibers as biomaterials, varying from two-dimensional (2D) wound dressings to three-dimensional (3D) tissue engineering scaffolds, has increased rapidly in recent years. Nanofibers can either be uniform fiber strands or coaxial drug carriers, and their overall structure varies from random mesh-like mats to aligned or gradient scaffolds. In addition, the pore size of the fibers can be adjusted or the fibers can be loaded with disparate medicines to provide different functions. This review discusses the various structures and applications of 2D fiber mats and 3D nanofibrous scaffolds made up of different one-dimensional (1D) fibers in tissue engineering. In particular, we focus on the improvements made in recent years, especially in the fields of wound healing, angiogenesis, and tissue regeneration.

Abstract:Electrospinning is one of the most studied techniques for the facile, versatile, and scalable synthesis of nano/micro/macro-fibers. The process employs various polymers of natural and synthetic origin for the preparation of fibers with several immeasurable designs, in virgin and composite forms. Bestowed with alluring properties such as solubility/solvolysis, biocompatibility, and degradability, electrospun fibers have found numerous applications as biomedical materials for tissue engineering, localized therapy, wound dressing, and drug delivery. Their properties enable effortless and precise compounding with various biopharmaceuticals and nanomaterials that are sensitive to chemo-, magnetic-, and photo-cathartic modalities. We hence provide a summarized insight into the recent past and predict the future of electrospun nanofibers as intelligent systems for biomedical applications.

Abstract:In the past few decades, many researchers have focused their research interests on nanocomposite hydrogel fibers (NHFs). These practitioners have developed and optimized techniques for preparing nanofiber membranes such as the template method, microfluidic spinning, electrospinning, wet spinning and three-dimensional printing (3D printing). NHFs have important applications in wearable monitoring, diagnosis and nursing due to their various excellent properties (such as high-water content, porous morphology, flexibility, braiding and rich active functional groups). In this paper, the latest progress of NHFs in pose monitoring, continuous monitoring of physiological indicators, diagnosis, wearables, nursing, drug delivery and dressings are reviewed. This paper also aims to review their key operational parameters, advantages and disadvantages of NHFs in the above fields, including sensitivity, working range and other special properties. Specifically, NHFs can be used for continuous monitoring of biological postures (such as gestures) or physiological indicators (such as blood sugar) in vitro and in vivo . NHFs also can be used for long-term monitoring of related indicators in the wearable field. NHFs can be used in tissue engineering and drug delivery. Finally, we look forward to the development prospects, challenges and opportunities of the next generation of NHFs. We confirm that the emergence of NHFs in the field of diagnosis and treatment has opened up a new vision for human health. Researchers have optimized the template method, microfluidic spinning, electrospinning, wet spinning and 3D printing.

Abstract:The discovery of novel methods to fabricate optimal scaffolds that mimic both mechanical and functional properties of the extracellular matrix (ECM) has always been the "holy grail" in tissue engineering. In recent years, electrospinning has emerged as an attractive material fabrication method and has been widely applied in tissue engineering due to its capability of producing non-woven and nanoscale fibers. However, from the perspective of biomimicry, it is difficult for single-component electrospun fiber membranes to achieve the biomimetic purposes of the multi-component extracellular matrix. Based on electrospinning, various functional components can be efficiently and expediently introduced into the membranes, and through the complementation and correlation of the properties of each component, composite materials with comprehensive and superior properties are obtained while maintaining the primitive merits of each component. In this review, we will provide an overview of the attempts made to fabricate electrospinning-based composite tissue engineering materials in the past few decades, which have been divided into organic additives, inorganic additives and organic-inorganic additives.

Abstract:Electrospun nanofiber/hydrogel composites combine the excellent biochemical properties of hydrogel with the biomimetic nature of electrospun fibers, and have attracted widespread attention in the last few years. Besides, nanofiber/hydrogel composites with tunable mechanical properties can mimic the microstructure of extracellular matrix (ECM) of various tissues and the microenvironment of different cells. These features enable electrospun fiber/hydrogel composites have uniquely advantageous for tissue repair. However, a comprehensive review of electrospun fiber/hydrogel composites as tissue engineering scaffolds is still lacking. Thus, this article systematically reviewed the preparation of electrospun fiber/hydrogel composites and their application in tissue engineering. First, the preparation strategies of electrospun fiber/hydrogel composites are classified and discussed. Second, the application of electrospun fiber/hydrogel-based scaffolds in tissue engineering, involving skin, blood vessel, nerve, bone and other tissue engineering, are summarized.
