Abstract:3D bioprinting comprises printing of organic material like bones, organs, and skin using one’s own cells as bioink. These synthetic replicas have the potential to cure disease or illness, provide an alternative to live donor transplantation, and increase the accuracy of research on the human body (Vermeulen et al., 2017; Murphy & Atala, 2014). Although a recent and still emerging technology as a derivative of 3D printing, research into the potential benefits and disadvantages of 3D bioprinting is growing. As a new and beneficial innovation, 3D bioprinting is arguably subject to intellectual property protection. Research in the field of biotechnology highlights the need to strike a balance between encouraging scientific research and development, while protecting the rights of the public (Andrews & Nelkin, 1998). However, studies that have examined the patentability of 3D bioprinting rarely address specific human rights concerns. Furthermore, investigation around the interaction of 3D bioprinting with other forms of intellectual property is lacking. This presentation will provide a brief introduction to the science of 3D bioprinting and how it affects numerous human rights. This will be followed by an examination of whether the current intellectual property system is suitable for regulation of this invention. Doctrinal methodology is the primary research method employed to examine applicable law and legal regimes relating to 3D bioprinting, intellectual property and human rights. This research expands on existing literature and contributes to addressing the gap in the knowledge base. By analysing the interface of 3D bioprinting, intellectual property and human rights, this study aims to shed light on potential implications of intellectual property protection for 3D bioprinting technology and to offer potential pathways for ensuring that any regulatory measures prioritise and support human rights.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) printing has attracted increasing research interest as an emerging manufacturing technology for developing sophisticated and exquisite architecture through hierarchical printing. It has also been employed in various advanced industrial areas. The development of intelligent biomedical engineering has raised the requirements for 3D printing, such as flexible manufacturing processes and technologies, biocompatible constituents, and alternative bioproducts. However, state-of-the-art 3D printing mainly involves inorganics or polymers and generally focuses on traditional industrial fields, thus severely limiting applications demanding biocompatibility and biodegradability. In this regard, peptide architectonics, which are self-assembled by programmed amino acid sequences that can be flexibly functionalized, have shown promising potential as bioinspired inks for 3D printing. Therefore, the combination of 3D printing and peptide self-assembly potentially opens up an alternative avenue of 3D bioprinting for diverse advanced applications. Israel, a small but innovative nation, has significantly contributed to 3D bioprinting in terms of scientific studies, marketization, and peptide architectonics, including modulations and applications, and ranks as a leading area in the 3D bioprinting field. This review summarizes the recent progress in 3D bioprinting in Israel, focusing on scientific studies on printable components, soft devices, and tissue engineering. This paper further delves into the manufacture of industrial products, such as artificial meats and bioinspired supramolecular architectures, and the mechanisms, physicochemical properties, and applications of peptide self-assembly. Undoubtedly, Israel contributes significantly to the field of 3D bioprinting and should thus be appropriately recognized.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing in the field of tissue engineering has evolved rapidly over the past few decades. 3D bioprinting is an extendedapplication of additive manufacturing that involves the building of tissue or organ in a layer-by-layer manner using a bioprintervia instructions from computer graphic software. 3D bioprinting technology offers promise in the transformation of healthcare sectors. Consequently, disputes regarding commercial use of 3D bioprinting, in particular on intellectual property rights will arise. Patent ownership and registration of bioprinting products and processes pose issues of ethics. The copyrighted works of 3D bioprinting software pose risks of copyright infringement. Besides, there is also a question of whether the marks and brand of 3D bioprinters can be protected as trademarks. The main objective of this study is to analyse how existing intellectual property laws in Malaysia can be utilized to protect 3D bioprinting technology intellectual property rights. The qualitative method is employed in this study, in particular, content analysis of journal articles, books, international conventions, directives, statutes and court cases. Semi-structured interviews with two respondents from relevant ministries were conducted to achieve the objectives of this study. Additionally, a comparative study of legal frameworks in the United States and Europe is adopted to examine intellectual property rights on the international stage. The study revealed that 3D bioprinting products and processes are patentable under the PatentsAct 1983; however, ethical and morality issues are challenges in granting protection. Apart from that, copyright can protect computeraided bioprinting design software and programs under the Copyright Act 1987 and the marks and brand of 3D bioprinting products can be protected under the Trademark Act 2019. The findings of this study will expose the potential in commercialization of 3D bioprinting among industry players and propose improvements to the current regulatory framework of 3D bioprinting related to intellectual property rights.

Abstract:Like many modern technologies, 3D printing and nanotechnology improve every day through new innovations and improvements upon current systems, methods, and materials. These innovations and improvements are made possible by inventors and researchers striving to benefit society. In addition to the satisfaction of benefitting society, the inventors and researchers, as well as the institutions and companies that fund and enable research and testing, need assurance that the time and money spent advancing technology will be recovered, to fund additional research with successful innovations. Intellectual property laws provide this assurance by protecting innovations and improvements, including many aspects of 3D bioprinting and nanotechnology. But there are exceptions to protection, and there are legal and ethical challenges to enforcing IP rights for 3D bioprinting and nanotechnology in tissue engineering.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting has emerged as a new disruptive technology that may address the ever-increasing demand for organ transplants. 3D bioprinting offers many technical features that allow for building functional biological tissue constructs by dispensing the individual or group of cells into specific locations along with various types of bio-scaffold materials and extracellular matrices, and thus, may provide flexibility needed for on-demand individualized construction of biological organs. Several key classes of 3D bioprinting techniques are reviewed, including potential medical and industrial applications. Several unanswered engineering components for the ultimate creation of printed biological organs are also discussed. The complicated nature of the human organs, in addition to the legal and ethical requirements for safe implantation into the human body, would require significant research and development to produce marketable bioprinted organs. This also suggests the possibility for further patenting and licensing opportunities from different sectors of the economy.

Abstract:Three-dimensional（3 D） printing is a novel promising technology based on 3 D imaging and layer-by-layer additive fabrication.It has a profound influence on all aspects of our lives and is playing an increasing important role in many areas including engineering, manufacturing, art, education and medicine. "3 D bioprinting" has been put forward with the technical progress in 3 D printing and might be a possible way to solve the serious problem of human organ shortage in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Many research groups flung them into this area and have already made some gratifying achievements.However, it is a long way to fabricate a live organ. Many elements lead to the limitation of 3 D bioprinting. This review introduces the background and development history of 3 D bioprinting, compares different approaches of 3 D bioprinting and illustrates the key factors of the printing process. Meanwhile, this review also points out existing challenges of 3 D bioprinting and has a great prospect. Some points proposed in this review might be served as reference for the research of this field.

Abstract:The present has begun to be revolutionised with the advent of 3D printing – technologically as well as socially. We are steadily gravitating away from the two-dimensional world of printing to a world of marvel, where 3D printed drugs, food products, hardware and even biological organs are no longer things of mere imagination. However, great innovation is accompanied by equally great regulatory challenges and debate. Printing with biological and non-biological materials results in a spectrum of policy challenges when compared to traditional ink-jet printing. For instance, the ambit of the existing legal framework governing organs and tissues in India is restricted to transplantation from another human being. Further, the legal framework on medical devices and drugs do not contemplate the possibility of additively manufactured devices and drugs. Additionally, 3D printing also throws the conventional province of patent law into disarray since it does not provide any clarity on whether the infringement will be assessed based on the CAD file or the 3D printed product. Likewise, the ease with which these products are manufactured turns the chain of product manufacturing into a complex web consisting of several potential defaulters. This paper strives to highlight some of these regulatory concerns and offers a framework wherein challenges will be translated into solutions, thus, balancing regulation with innovation.

Abstract:Abstract The multidisciplinary research field of bioprinting combines additive manufacturing, biology and material sciences to create bioconstructs with three-dimensional architectures mimicking natural living tissues. The high interest in the possibility of reproducing biological tissues and organs is further boosted by the ever-increasing need for personalized medicine, thus allowing bioprinting to establish itself in the field of biomedical research, and attracting extensive research efforts from companies, universities, and research institutes alike. In this context, this paper proposes a scientometric analysis and critical review of the current literature and the industrial landscape of bioprinting to provide a clear overview of its fast-changing and complex position. The scientific literature and patenting results for 2000–2020 are reviewed and critically analyzed by retrieving 9314 scientific papers and 309 international patents in order to draw a picture of the scientific and industrial landscape in terms of top research countries, institutions, journals, authors and topics, and identifying the technology hubs worldwide. This review paper thus offers a guide to researchers interested in this field or to those who simply want to understand the emerging trends in additive manufacturing and 3D bioprinting. Abstract:Recently, 3D bioprinting is developed as an emerging approach, increasingly applied to materials for healthcare; while, the precise placement of cells and materials, and the shape fidelity of forming constructs is of great importance for successful application of 3D bioprinting.Research efforts have been made to develop new bioinks as "raw materials" with better biocompatibility and biofunctionality, but the printability of bioinks is largely ignored and still needs to be carefully examined to enable robotic bioprinting.This article aims to introduce a recent published review（Appl.Phys.Rev.2018, 5, 041304） on the evaluation of bioink printability by Huang’s research group from University of Florida.Huang et al.comprehensively reviewed the bioink printability based on the physical point of view during inkjet printing, laser printing, and microextrusion, and a series of self-consistent time scales and dimensionless quantities were utilized to physically understand and evaluate bioink printability.This article would be helpful to know the trends on physical understanding of bioink printability.

Abstract:Advances in three-dimensional (3D) printing have increased feasibility towards the synthesis of living tissues. Known as 3D bioprinting, this technology involves the precise layering of cells, biologic scaffolds, and growth factors with the goal of creating bioidentical tissue for a variety of uses. Early successes have demonstrated distinct advantages over conventional tissue engineering strategies. Not surprisingly, there are current challenges to address before 3D bioprinting becomes clinically relevant. Here we provide an overview of 3D bioprinting technology and discuss key advances, clinical applications, and current limitations. While 3D bioprinting is a relatively novel tissue engineering strategy, it holds great potential to play a key role in personalized medicine.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting is a rapidly growing technology that has been widely used in tissue engineering, disease studies, and drug screening. It provides the unprecedented capacity of depositing various types of biomaterials, cells, and biomolecules in a layer-by-layer fashion, with precisely controlled spatial distribution. This technology is expected to address the organ-shortage issue in the future. In this review, we first introduce three categories of 3D bioprinting strategies: inkjet-based printing (IBP), extrusion-based printing (EBP), and light-based printing (LBP). Biomaterials and cells, which are normally referred to as “bioinks,” are then discussed. We also systematically describe the recent advancements of 3D bioprinting in fabricating cell-laden artificial tissues and organs with solid or hollow structures, including cartilage, bone, skin, muscle, vascular network, and so on. The development of organs-on-chips utilizing 3D bioprinting technology for drug discovery and toxicity testing is reviewed as well. Finally, the main challenges in current studies and an outlook of the future research of 3D bioprinting are discussed.

Abstract:The scientific development of 3D bioprinting is rapidly advancing. This innovative technology involves many ethical and regulatory issues, including theoretical, source, transplantation and enhancement, animal welfare, economic, safety and information arguments. 3D bioprinting technology requires an adequate bioethical debate in order to develop regulations in the interest both of public health and the development of research. This paper aims to initiate and promote ethical debate. The authors examine scientific aspects of 3D bioprinting technology and explore related ethical issues, with special regard to the protection of individual rights and transparency of research. In common with all new biotechnologies, 3D bioprinting technology involves both opportunities and risks. Consequently, several scientific and ethical issues need to be addressed. A bioethical debate should be carefully increased through a multidisciplinary approach among experts and also among the public.

Abstract:3D printing or additive manufacturing allows the rapid conversion of information from pre-designed digital 3D models or computer-aided design (CAD) files into physical objects through the continual addition of layers of material. This approach is in contrast with conventional manufacturing processes in which physical shapes emerge either by removing material, as in machining, or changing the shape of a set volume of material. This modern method of manufacturing does away with the time-consuming and costly tooling and machining requirements. The cost of failure is low in 3D printing and it allows flexibility in manufacturing. It is cost-effective in many other ways because there is no need of warehousing or far-off transportation. The advancements in 3D printing technology offer a new hope to the less privileged and under-resourced people with brilliant entrepreneurial ideas. With advances in material science and affordable availability of portable 3D printers, this disruptive technology is rapidly maturing to a level to support local entrepreneurship. This study undertakes an analysis of the potential of 3D printing in enabling local entrepreneurship and actual or potential challenges posed by patent laws. Part I of this paper evaluates the unique benefits of this revolutionary technology with a key focus on harnessing the potential of 3D printing in enabling local entrepreneurship. Part II examines to what extent patent exclusive rights possibly become a hurdle in using the full potential of 3D printing technology.

Abstract:Over millions of years of evolution, species in nature have gradually adopted bio-structures. These structures have specific mechanical, hydrodynamic, optical, and electrical properties, which provide humans with valuable abilities to design and fabricate high-performance components and devices. However, traditional fabrication technologies cannot accurately reproduce or imitate the complicated and exquisite bioinspired structures, which restrict the development and application of biomimetic study. Due to the emergence and development of 3D printing technologies, more bioinspired structures can now be designed and fabricated. Recent progress in the 3D printing of structures inspired by species in nature, such as springtails, filefish, abalone shell, conch shell, wheat awn, plant stem, and wood, are reviewed in this paper, which also discusses current challenges and potential future developments in 3D printing for bioinspired structures.

Abstract:<p>Bioprinting is the assembly of three‐dimensional tissue constructs by layering cell‐laden biomaterials using additive manufacturing techniques, offering great potential for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Such process can be performed with high resolution and control by personalized or commercially‐available inkjet printers. However, bioprinting's clinical translation is significantly limited due to process engineering challenges. Upstream challenges include synthesis, cellular incorporation, and functionalization of 'bioinks', and extrusion of print geometries. Downstream challenges address sterilization, culture, implantation, and degradation. In the long run, bioinks must provide a microenvironment to support cell growth, development and maturation and must interact and integrate with the surrounding tissues after implantation. Additionally, a robust, scaleable manufacturing process must pass regulatory scrutiny from regulatory bodies such as U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), European medicines Agency (EMEA) or Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for bioprinting to have a real clinical impact. In this review, recent advances on inkjet‐based 3D bioprinting will be presented, emphasizing on biomaterials available, their properties, and the process to generate bioprinted constructs with application in medicine. Current challenges and the future path of bioprinting and bioinks will be addressed, with emphasis in mass production aspects and the regulatory framework bioink‐based products must comply to translate this technology from the bench to the clinic.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:3D printing, an additive manufacturing based technology for precise 3D construction, is currently widely employed to enhance applicability and function of cell laden scaffolds. Research on novel compatible biomaterials for bioprinting exhibiting fast crosslinking properties is an essential prerequisite toward advancing 3D printing applications in tissue engineering. Printability to improve fabrication process and cell encapsulation are two of the main factors to be considered in development of 3D bioprinting. Other important factors include but are not limited to printing fidelity, stability, crosslinking time, biocompatibility, cell encapsulation and proliferation, shear-thinning properties, and mechanical properties such as mechanical strength and elasticity. In this review, we recite recent promising advances in bioink development as well as bioprinting methods. Also, an effort has been made to include studies with diverse types of crosslinking methods such as photo, chemical and ultraviolet (UV). We also propose the challenges and future outlook of 3D bioprinting application in medical sciences and discuss the high performance bioinks.

Abstract:In this article, we review the extant social science and ethical literature on three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting. 3D bioprinting has the potential to be a 'game-changer', printing human organs on demand, no longer necessitating the need for living or deceased human donation or animal transplantation. Although the technology is not yet at the level required to bioprint an entire organ, 3D bioprinting may have a variety of other mid-term and short-term benefits that also have positive ethical consequences, for example, creating alternatives to animal testing, filling a therapeutic need for minors and avoiding species boundary crossing. Despite a lack of current socioethical engagement with the consequences of the technology, we outline what we see as some preliminary practical, ethical and regulatory issues that need tackling. These relate to managing public expectations and the continuing reliance on technoscientific solutions to diseases that affect high-income countries. Avoiding prescribing a course of action for the way forward in terms of research agendas, we do briefly outline one possible ethical framework 'Responsible Research Innovation' as an oversight model should 3D bioprinting promises are ever realised. 3D bioprinting has a lot to offer in the course of time should it move beyond a conceptual therapy, but is an area that requires ethical oversight and regulation and debate, in the here and now. The purpose of this article is to begin that discussion.

Abstract:Abstract3D Printing promises to produce complex biomedical devices according to computer design using patient-specific anatomical data. Since its initial use as pre-surgical visualization models and tooling molds, 3D Printing has slowly evolved to create one-of-a-kind devices, implants, scaffolds for tissue engineering, diagnostic platforms, and drug delivery systems. Fueled by the recent explosion in public interest and access to affordable printers, there is renewed interest to combine stem cells with custom 3D scaffolds for personalized regenerative medicine. Before 3D Printing can be used routinely for the regeneration of complex tissues (e.g. bone, cartilage, muscles, vessels, nerves in the craniomaxillofacial complex), and complex organs with intricate 3D microarchitecture (e.g. liver, lymphoid organs), several technological limitations must be addressed. In this review, the major materials and technology advances within the last five years for each of the common 3D Printing technologies (Three Dimensional Printing, Fused Deposition Modeling, Selective Laser Sintering, Stereolithography, and 3D Plotting/Direct-Write/Bioprinting) are described. Examples are highlighted to illustrate progress of each technology in tissue engineering, and key limitations are identified to motivate future research and advance this fascinating field of advanced manufacturing.

Abstract:The scope of three-dimensional printing is expanding rapidly, with innovative approaches resulting in the evolution of state-of-the-art 3D bioprinting (3DbioP) techniques for solving issues in bioengineering and biopharmaceutical research. The methods and tools in 3DbioP emphasize the extrusion process, bioink formulation, and stability of the bioprinted scaffold. Thus, 3DbioP technology augments 3DP in the biological world by providing technical support to regenerative therapy, drug delivery, bioengineering of prosthetics, and drug kinetics research. Besides the above, drug delivery and dosage control have been achieved using 3D bioprinted microcarriers and capsules. Developing a stable, biocompatible, and versatile bioink is a primary requisite in biofabrication. The 3DbioP research is breaking the technical barriers at a breakneck speed. Numerous techniques and biomaterial advancements have helped to overcome current 3DbioP issues related to printability, stability, and bioink formulation. Abstract:3D Bioprinting has become a revolutionary tool in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Bioprinting industry has seen a tremendous growth in the past decade, with a number of bioink companies and bioprinter companies on the rise. While the growth of bioprinting has been tremendous in terms of research and reach, permeating into life sciences research where two-dimensional cell culture has been the norm, we are yet to witness a commercial success in terms of clinical translation. This perspective article aims to highlight some of the lesser-discussed challenges in the field that are to be overcome to fully translate the use of bioprinting into the clinics and make it a standard of testing in the pharmaceuticals industry.
