Abstract:Aggregates are the basic structural units of soils and play a crucial role in metal migration and transformation. Combined contamination of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) is common in site soils, and the two metals may compete for the same adsorption sites and affect their environmental behavior. Herein, the adsorption behavior of Pb and Cd on aggregates of two soils and contributions of soil components in single and competitive systems were studied by combining cultivation experiments, batch adsorption, multi-surface models (MSMs), and spectroscopic techniques. The results demonstrated that < 2 µm size aggregate was the dominant sink for Pb and Cd competitive adsorption in both soils. Compared with Pb, the adsorption capacity and behavior of Cd were affected greatly under competition. MSMs prediction revealed that soil organic matter (SOM) contributed the most to Cd and Pb adsorption on aggregates (> 68.4%), but the dominant competitive effect occurred on different sites for Cd adsorption (primarily on SOM) and Pb adsorption (primarily on clay minerals). Further, 2 mM Pb coexistence caused 5.9 − 9.8% of soil Cd conversion to unstable species (Cd(OH)2). Thus, the competitive effect of Pb on Cd adsorption cannot be ignored in soils with high content of SOM and fine aggregates.
Adsorption and Desorption Characteristics of Cd, Cu and Pb in Different Soil Aggregates Through Soil Profile under Single and Ternary Systems

Abstract:As the fundamental unit of soil, aggregates exhibit significant variations in their ability to adsorb or desorb trace elements, depending on their size. Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the characteristics of adsorption and desorption of Cd, Cu and Pb on different sizes of soil aggregates from each genetic horizon of calcareous soil profiles. The results showed that both Langmuir and Freundlich models were successfully fitted to describe the isothermal adsorption process of single Cd, Cu, and Pb on different soil aggregates. Additionally, soil aggregates at the bottom layer showed the highest maximum adsorption capacity and required the lowest energy for Cd, Cu and Pb adsorption compared to aggregates from upper soil horizon. The physical-chemical properties of various soil aggregates were found to govern the adsorption and desorption process of heavy metals rather than aggregate sizes, wherein the content of Fe/Al oxides and organic matter were the most crucial influencing factors accounted for this process. Cd displayed higher mobility than Cu and Pb among the different soil aggregates, and the maximum adsorption capacity of the metal ions studied followed the order: Pb > Cu > Cd, while their desorption rate followed the order: Cd > Cu > Pb. Additionally, the < 0.053 mm size of soil microaggregates presented the lowest desorption rate for Cd, Cu, and Pb compared to other sizes of soil aggregates in each soil horizon. Furthermore, Orthogonal experiment results demonstrated the competition for metal adsorption occurred on soil aggregates in ternary heavy metal ions system, however, only the desorption of Pb was significantly affected by the coexistence of Cd and Cu.

Abstract:Soil particle size could intensively impact the Cd adsorption in soils. The adsorption characteristics of Cd on miscellaneous fill (MF) and weathered slate (WS), collected from a zinc smelting site, were studied by batch experiments under conditions of different initial Cd concentrations and soil particle sizes. The results showed that the adsorption kinetics of Cd for soil particles from MF and WS were well fitted with the pseudo-first-order model, and the Cd adsorption isotherms well conformed to the Freundlich model. Soil particle size had an inconspicuous influence on adsorption rate, while the adsorption capacity decreased with particle size increase. The Cd adsorption on soil particles could be due to the exchange with Fe/Al, and -OH/C=O sites were the predominant adsorption sites. The MF may cause secondary pollution risk due to its low adsorption ability for Cd in smelting sites.

Effects of soil aging conditions on distributions of cadmium distribution and phosphatase activity in different soil aggregates

Abstract:Aging behaviors of metals in the field differ from those in a controlled laboratory environment. Whether aging conditions influence the fates of metals in soil remains unclear. In this study, distributions of cadmium (Cd) and phosphatase activity were compared in soil aggregates (i.e., >2, 1–2, 0.25–1, and <0.25 mm) along a profile (0–5, 5–10, and 10–15 cm) at the end of 500-day aging experiments under both controlled laboratory and field conditions. Cd concentration in the 0–5 cm layer was lower and Cd concentration in the 5–10 cm layer was higher in field-aged soil compared to laboratory-aged soil. 25.26–35.62% of soil Cd was loaded in >2 mm aggregates of field-aged soils, and 58.41–66.95% was in laboratory-aged soils. Higher loadings of Cd in 0.25–1 and <0.25 mm aggregates were found in field-aged soil. A higher proportion of exchangeable Cd fraction (20.93% of total soil Cd) was found in the 0–5 cm layer of field-aged soil than in laboratory-aged soil (17.63%), while the opposite tendency was found in deeper soil layers. Soil phosphatase activities in field-aged soils were 1.13–1.26 times higher than in laboratory-aged soils. Phosphatase loadings in the >2 mm aggregates were lower and loadings in both the 1–2 and 0.25–1 mm aggregates were higher in field-aged soils than in laboratory-aged soils. Furthermore, correlation analysis and principal component analysis indicated that available Cd fractions accounted for most of the variations in phosphatase activities. In summary, the fates of the exogenous metal Cd differed between field and controlled laboratory conditions. To better understand the behaviors of heavy metals in soil, especially in a seasonal freeze-thaw area, further field studies are needed.

Abstract:With the samples collected from five stations of Chinese ecosystem research network and national long-term monitoring network of soil fertility and fertilizer effects,adsorption and desorption characteristics of Cd in agricultural soils distributed in different regions in China were studied.Also,based on the study of effects on the Cd accumulation and its' availability in Fengqiu fluvo-aquic soil and Qiyang upland red soil under the condition of long-term fixed ratio fertilization,soil Cd fractions in different treatments were analyzed as well.Results indicate that black soil had the highest Cd2+ adsorption amount,while red soil had lowest Cd adsorption amount,and the maximum Cd2+ adsorption amount had relationship with content of soil organic carbon,soil CEC and soil pH.Long-term application of chemical fertilizers had little effect on the accumulation of Cd in both fluvo-aquic soil and red soil,while long-term application of organic fertilizers increased the accumulation of Cd,but the Cd concentration increase degree in fluvo-aquic soil were much lower than that of in red soil since inner source organic matters(composted wheat straw) had been used in fluvo-aquic soil,and out source organic manure(fecal from hoggery) had been applied in red soil.Long-term application of organic fertilizers could active soil Cd.Both fluvo-aquic soil and upland red soil had the order of speciation as: residual> acidic> reducible> oxidisable fraction,but the residuble proportion in calcareous fluvo-aquic soil was higher than that in upland red soil.Chemical and organic fertilizers affected speciation of Cd in both fluvo-aquic soil and red soil.

Abstract:In this study, the competitive adsorption and migration behaviors of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr) in typical Chinese soils were investigated. It was observed that Hainan, Shanxi, and Zhejiang Mengjiadai soils exhibited the highest adsorption capacities for As (563 μg/g), Cd (653 μg/g), and Cr (383 μg/g), respectively. Heavy metals (HMs) adsorption capacities were predicted by Extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) models, and the Shapley additive explanation (SHAP) was employed to elucidate the effect of soil physicochemical properties on target values. Due to redox and complexation reaction, the primary factor affecting adsorption has changed from free state manganese (Mn) in single As system to antimony (Sb) in As/Cd and As/Cr systems. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity (Qm) of As increased by 49.4 % with the addition of Cd into Heilongjiang soil. Finally, the migration process of HMs in Heilongjiang, Hebei, and Hainan soils was simulated by column experiments. With a relatively large dispersion coefficient (D = 29.630 cm2/h) and small retardation factor (Rh = 0.030), Cr penetrated fastest in Heilongjiang soil. This research demonstrates that both the types and coexistence of HMs may affect the HMs behaviors in soil.

Abstract:Aging process of exogenous heavy metals in soil is significant for reducing their environmental risk due to the redistribution of species of soil heavy metals. A red soil (ultisol) and a brown soil (alfisol) were selected to investigate the aging process of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and lead (Pb) under different regimes of temperature and water content. Most introduced heavy metals were all transformed from dissolved fraction to more stable fractions within 5 days of incubation. During incubation, most Pb existed in the fraction bound to Fe/Mn oxides, while exchangeable and carbonate-associated fraction was the dominant portion for Cd and Cu, suggesting that the transformation rate followed the order: Pb > Cu > Cd. The exchangeable and carbonate-associated fraction in red soil, which was characterized with higher pH and Fe/Al/Mn oxides and lower organic matter (OM), was significantly higher than that in brown soil, implying that soil OM was the important factor affecting the aging process of soil heavy metals in the present study. In addition, increases of temperature and soil water content can accelerate the transformation of most introduced Cd, Cu, and Pb to more stable forms in the soils. The results indicated that soil properties, environmental factors (i.e., temperature and water content), types of heavy metals, and pollution time can significantly affect the aging process of exogenous heavy metals.

Single and Combined Aging of Cadmium, Lead and Zinc in Soil

Abstract:The changes of metal speciation with time, known as aging, have been considered as an important factor in evaluating risks of metal pollution in soil. The present work investigated the single and combined aging of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn). CaCl2 extraction was employed to examine the bioavailable speciation of Cd, Pb and Zn in soils. Cd, Pb, Zn or their mixture were added into seventeen treatments of soils, respectively. Soils were sampled at 3rd, 7th, 15th, 30th, 90th, 180th, and 360th day after pollution and then extracted using 0.01 mol·L-1 CaCl2. The results showed that in the single aging the bioavailable concentration of all the three metals decreased sharply during the first 7 days, then mildly from 7th to 30th day, and approached to nearly steady state after 30th day. The decline of concentration of Pb was the most prominent among the three metals. In the combined aging, the presence of Zn or Pb significantly influenced the aging of Cd. Compared with the single aging of Cd, concentration of bioavailable Cd in the steady state was significantly higher and incubation period before equilibrium was significantly longer in the combined aging in the presence of Zn or Pb. The presence of Pb increased the concentration of bioavailable Cd more significantly than that of Zn.

Abstract:Arsenate (As(V), AsO4(3-)) and cadmium (Cd) are among the toxic elements of most concern. Their sorption behaviors on goethite were studied by batch experiments (pH edges, isotherms and kinetics) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Arsenic coordination environment was explored by X-ray absorbance fine structure (EXAFS) analysis. Sorption isotherms of both As(V) and Cd on goethite could be divided into the adsorption-dominated and precipitation-dominated parts, while their sorption showed different pH-dependency and sorption reversibility. Cadmium adsorption was enhanced in the presence of AsO4(3-), which could be explained by the decrease in the electrostatic potential due to the sorption of AsO4(3-) and the formation of a ternary Cd-As(V)-goethite complex. Based on the EXAFS study, AsO4(3-) adsorbed on goethite mainly formed bidentate-binuclear complex. The high loadings of Cd changed the As(V)-Fe distance and its coordination number. However, Cd did not affect the As(V) adsorption amount in the adsorption-dominated region. When As(V) and Cd formed co-precipitates, their sorption amounts were both increased. The formation of co-precipitates decreased the mobility of Cd but increased the mobility of As(V) because less As(V) was sorbed on goethite through surface complexation. This study will provide better understandings on As(V) and Cd transport and useful information on their remediation strategies.

Abstract:Understanding the interaction mechanism between different heavy metals and soils is a primary and important task for remediation of contaminated soils. In this study, we conducted series experiments to explore the co-contamination mechanism of arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) on clayey soils. The results showed that As and Cd exhibited opposite effects on physical and mechanical properties of soils under single contamination, while producing a counteracting effect under co-contamination. Specific adsorption, electrostatic adsorption, and precipitation adsorption co-existed simultaneously in As- and Cd-co-contaminated soils, and precipitates found by XRD is the main cause of the counteraction of As and Cd in co-contaminated soils. The shear strength and permeability coefficient of single As-contaminated soils were decreased by 23.02 kPa and 0.61 × 10 −6 cm/s at a concentration of 5000 mg/kg, respectively, and soil particles were dispersed into small aggregates with more ultramicropores (0.1–5 μm) and cryptopores (< 0.1 μm). However, for single Cd contaminated soils, the shear strengths were increased by 27.93% on average, the maximum permeability coefficient increased to 6.63 × 10 −6 cm/s, and soil aggregations were enlarged with more micropores (5–30 μm). Furthermore, for co-contaminated soils with As and Cd, the shear strength and permeability coefficient were between those of single As- and Cd-contaminated soils at the same concentration, and decreased with an increasing concentration of As. This study provides significant experiment and theory support for remediation and reclamation of heavy metal co-contaminated soils with different charges.

Abstract:To reveal the respective evolution of soil and biochar on competitive heavy metal adsorption mechanisms after natural ageing, three soils and two biochars were tested in this study. The soil-biochar interlayer samples were buried in the field for 0.5, 1, and 2 years, for which competitive adsorption characteristics and mechanisms of soils and biochars in four systems (Cd, Cd+Ni, Cd+Cu, and Cd+Ni+Cu) were investigated. Results showed that physicochemical properties, adsorption capacity and mechanisms of soils and biochars all changed the most in the first 0.5 years. The properties and adsorption capacity of biochars gradually weakened with the ageing time, meanwhile, those of soils gradually enhanced. After co-ageing with acidic soil for 0.5 years, the Cd(II) adsorption capacity of modified biochar decreased by 86.59% in the ternary system; meanwhile, that of acidic soil increased by 65.52%. The contributions of mineral mechanisms decreased significantly, while non-mineral mechanisms were slightly affected by ageing. This study highlighted that when using biochar to remediate heavy metal-contaminated soils, biochar should be applied at least half a year in advance before planting crops so that biochar can fully contact and react with the soil.

Distribution Characteristics of Heavy Metals in Different Particle Size Fractions of Chinese Paddy Soil Aggregates

Abstract:In recent years, the migration and transformation of heavy metals (HMs) in soil has become a hot issue. Soil particle size has an important effect on the environmental behavior of HMs in soil. The distribution of HMs in soil is strongly affected by the size of a soil aggregate. In this study, paddy samples in both cultivated and uncultivated soils were collected from Anhui Province, China. The soils were sieved into six particle size fractions (diameters of >4000, 4000–2000, 2000–1000, 1000–250, 250–53, and 4000 μm particles. Moreover, the concentrations of Cd, Cr, Pb, and As were elevated in cultivated paddy soils compared to uncultivated soils. The accumulation of HMs in all paddy soils increased with decreasing particle size. Although the smallest particle size fractions accounted for only 5.65–17.28%, they provided the highest distribution factor (DF) of Cr (1.35), As (1.25), Cd (1.28), and Pb (1.38). The highest contributions of HMs came from the coarser fractions (>2000 μm); however, for Cr, Pb, Cd, and As, the mass loading of <53 μm particles was up to 15.90%, 14.41%, 15.21%, and 15.70%, respectively. The highest content of HMs was found in the finest aggregate, with a pattern of decreasing with increasing aggregate size. In addition, the leachability behaviors of different HMs in different particle size aggregates were different. The leachability behaviors of Cr and Pb in the coarse particle size fractions were the highest, while the leachability behaviors of As and Cd in the less than 250 μm particle size fractions were 10–100 times higher than those of Cr and Pb. A correlation analysis showed that the particle distributions of Fe, TOC, and Mn had significant influences on the distributions of Pb, Cd, As, and Cr. This study provides a theoretical basis for the prevention, treatment, and remediation of HMs pollution in soil.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) has received considerable attention because of its association with various human health problems. The behavior of adsorption-desorption of Cd at contaminated levels in two variable charge soils were investigated. The red soil (RAR) developed on the Arenaceous rock (clayey, mixed siliceous thermic typic Dystrochrept) adsorbed more Cd2+ than the red soil (REQ) derived from the Quaternary red earths (clayey, kaolinitic thermic plinthite Aquult). The characteristics of Cd adsorption could be described by the Freundlich equation (r(2) = 0.997 and 0.989, respectively, for the RAR and REQ) and the simple Langmuir adsorption equation (r(2) = 0.985 and 0.977, respectively, for the RAR and REQ). The maximum adsorption values (X-m) that were obtained from the simple Langmuir model were 36.23 mmol Cd2+ kg(-1) soil and 31.15 mmol Cd2+ kg(-1) soil, respectively for the RAR and REQ. Adsorption of Cd2+ decreased soil pH by 1.28 unit for the RAR soil and 1.23 unit for the REQ soil at the highest loading. The distribution coefficient (kd) of Cd in the soil decreased exponentially with increasing Cd2+ loading. The adsorption of cadmium in the two variable charge soils was characterized by a rapid process that lasted approximately 15 min, followed bya slower but longer period. 85.5% and 79.4% of the added Cd were adsorbed within two hours by the RAR and REQ soil, respectively. More Cd2+ was adsorbed at 10 degrees C than at 25 degrees C or 40 degrees C. After-five successive desorptions with 0.01 mol L-1 NaNO3 solution, 53.3% of the total adsorbed Cd2+ in. the RAR soil was desorbed and the corresponding value of the REQ, soil was 46.5%, indicating that the RAR soil had a lower affinity for Cd2+ than the REQ soil at the same Cd2+ loading.
Cadmium Adsorption to Clay-Microbe Aggregates: Implications for Marine Heavy Metals Cycling

Abstract:Interactions between microorganisms and clay minerals influence the transport and cycling of metal contaminants in both marine and terrestrial environments. The present study was conducted to quantify the adsorption of dissolved cadmium, Cd(II), under seawater-like conditions to the marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002, three common clay minerals (kaolinite, montmorillonite and illite), as well as cell-clay aggregates. We show here that the Synechococcus-only experiments removed the most Cd above pH 5.5, followed in decreasing order by aggregates of 50% cells:50% individual clays, aggregates of cells and all 3 clays, and individual clays. Electron microscope imaging showed that clays associated in a tangential edge-on orientation to the cells in Synechococcus-clay mineral aggregates. A non-electrostatic surface complexation modeling approach was used to fit Cd adsorption onto Synechococcus cells and individual clay minerals. The resulting Cd binding constants were then used in consort with surface functional group pKa values and site concentrations to accurately predict the extent of Cd adsorption onto the Synechococcus-clay mineral aggregates using the component additivity (CA) approach. We observed that the addition of cyanobacterial cells to clay mineral suspensions led to significantly larger mean aggregate sizes of clay minerals, enhancing the clay sedimentation rate. Although specifically focused on Cd, our study indicates that the ratio of bacterial plankton to clay minerals is an important determinant in terms of understanding the rate with which metals are transferred from the water column to the seafloor.
Distribution Characteristics and Pollution Assessment of Soil Aggregates of Cr, Ni, and Cu in a Region of Northern Hebei Province

Abstract:In order to understand the distribution, occurrence forms, and influencing factors of chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and copper (Cu) in soil aggregates, a five-step extraction method was used to determine their forms in soil aggregates of different sizes in a mountainous area of northern Hebei Province. The ecological risk was evaluated using the geo-accumulation index (Igeo) and primary and secondary comparison value method (RSP). Redundancy analysis (RDA) was used to identify the main factors affecting the distribution and morphology of Cr, Ni, and Cu in soil. The results showed that in vertical distribution, Cr, Ni, and Cu were concentrated in the surface soil, but there was no clear relationship between soil depth and heavy metal content. The distribution characteristics revealed that Cr, Ni, and Cu in soils mainly existed in relatively stable Fe-Mn oxides and residue states, and their morphology in aggregates did not vary considerably with particle size. Furthermore, the RSP results showed that the pollution risk of Cr, Ni, and Cu was higher, with Cr and Ni posing the highest risk in the 0.5–1 mm and 1–2 mm particle size ranges. The RDA results showed that available phosphorus and soil organic matter (SOM) were the main factors that caused the characteristic difference of 1–2 mm aggregate components. Additionally, hydrolyzed nitrogen, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and calcium exchange have positive effects on the residual state of Cr. For Ni, SOM, CEC and exchangeable calcium have positive effects on the binding state of Fe and Mn oxides and carbonate. For Cu, CEC and exchangeable calcium are the key factors that cause the morphological differences of aggregates. Based on the above results, a theoretical basis has been provided for the prevention and control of pollution in the subsequent research area.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are two of the most common elements found in contaminated sites. The behavior of specific metals in the soil may be affected by other metals due to the competition for adsorption sites. In this study, adsorption experiments after chemical extraction, multi-surface models (MSMs), and advanced spectroscopy technology TOF-SIMS were used jointly to explain the adsorption mechanism of Cd and Pb, and the contribution of each component in the competitive system. The results show that pH is the key factor in determining the contribution of soil components to metal adsorption . SOM is the dominant adsorbent both for the Cd and Pb. Clay minerals play an adsorption role at low pH, while Fe/Al oxides adsorb metals mainly in the high pH range. What is more, the competitive effect of Pb on Cd occurred mainly on SOM rather than clay minerals. When the Pb concentration increased from 0 mg/L to 500 mg/L, the adsorption of Cd on SOM decreased by 132.0 mg/kg, while only 1.9 mg/kg decreased on clay minerals. Therefore, in soils with high organic matter content, the competitive effect of Pb on Cd cannot be ignored .

Abstract:To date, most studies about the aging of metals in soil were based on the controlled laboratory experiments, and few works have attempted to investigate how aging process influences the distribution and bioavailability of metals in soil under the field condition. The purpose of this study was to compare the aging of cadmium (Cd) in soils under the controlled laboratory and the field by monitoring time-dependent soil Cd speciation changes, Cd release kinetics, and Cd bioavailability to plant through the 438-day aging experiments. During the aging process, the proportions of Cd associated with the most weakly bound fraction tended to decrease, with corresponding increases in the more stable binding fractions. After aging, a higher concentration of available Cd was found in the field aging soil (0.74 mg kg−1) than the laboratory aging soil (0.65 mg kg−1). The Elovich equation was the best model to describe the soil available Cd aging process. The constant b in the Elovich equation, which was defined as the transformation rate, was in the order of laboratory aging soil > field aging soil. Moreover, higher Cd release amounts were found for the field aging soil (2.74 mg kg−1) than the laboratory aging soil (2.57 mg kg−1) at the end of aging. Additionally, higher body Cd concentrations were found for the vegetables grown in the field aging soils (1.49 mg kg−1, fresh weight) than those grown in the laboratory aging soils (1.32 mg kg−1, fresh weight). Therefore, this study indicated that the metal distribution process and its bioavailability may be overestimated or underestimated if research data from the laboratory experiments are used to derive soil quality criteria or investigate soil metal bioavailability.

Abstract:Understanding the interaction mechanisms between complex heavy metals and soil components is a prerequisite for effectively forecasting the mobility and availability of contaminants in soils. Soil organic matter (SOM), with its diverse functional groups, has long been a focal point of research interest. In this study, four soils with manipulated levels of SOM, cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) were subjected to a 90-day incubation experiment. The competitive interactions between Cd and Pb in soils were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray adsorption nearedge structure (XANES) analysis. Our results indicate that Pb competed with Cd for adsorption sites on the surface of SOM, particularly on carboxyl and hydroxyl functional groups. Approximately 22.6 % of Cd adsorption sites on humus were occupied by Pb. The use of sequentially extracted exchangeable heavy metals as indicators for environment risk assessments, considering variations in soil physico-chemical properties and synergistic or antagonistic effects between contaminants, provides a better estimation of metal bioavailability and its potential impacts. Integrating comprehensive contamination characterization of heavy metal interactions with the soil organic phase is an important advancement to assess the environmental risks of heavy metal dynamics in soil compared to individual contamination assessments.
