Abstract:We demonstrate and characterize Zeeman-Sisyphus (ZS) deceleration of a beam of ytterbium monohydroxide (YbOH). Our method uses a combination of large magnetic fields ($\sim$ 2.5 T) and optical spin-flip transitions to decelerate molecules while scattering only $\sim$ 10 photons per molecule. We study the challenges associated with the presence of internal molecular perturbations among the excited electronic states and discuss the methods used to overcome these challenges, including a modified ZS decelerator using microwave and optical transitions.

Abstract:We explore a technique for decelerating molecules using a static magnetic field and optical pumping. Molecules travel through a spatially varying magnetic field and are repeatedly pumped into a weak-field seeking state as they move towards each strong field region, and into a strong-field seeking state as they move towards weak field. The method is time-independent and so is suitable for decelerating both pulsed and continuous molecular beams. By using guiding magnets at each weak field region, the beam can be simultaneously guided and decelerated. By tapering the magnetic field strength in the strong field regions, and exploiting the Doppler shift, the velocity distribution can be compressed during deceleration. We develop the principles of this deceleration technique, provide a realistic design, use numerical simulations to evaluate its performance for a beam of CaF, and compare this performance to other deceleration methods.

Abstract:We describe a simple Zeeman slower design using permanent magnets. Contrary to common wire-wound setups no electric power and water cooling are required. In addition, the whole system can be assembled and disassembled at will. The magnetic field is however transverse to the atomic motion and an extra repumper laser is necessary. A Halbach configuration of the magnets produces a high quality magnetic field and no further adjustment is needed. After optimization of the laser parameters, the apparatus produces an intense beam of slow and cold 87Rb atoms. With a typical flux of 1 - 5 \times 10^10 atoms/s at 30 ms^-1, our apparatus efficiently loads a large magneto-optical trap with more than 10^10 atoms in one second, which is an ideal starting point for degenerate quantum gases experiments.
A general Zeeman slower for type-II transitions and polar molecules

Abstract: We proposed a general Zeeman slower scheme applicable to the majority of the laser-coolable molecules. Different from previous schemes, the key idea of our scheme lies in that the compensation of the detuning with the magnetic field is done for the repumping laser instead of the cooling laser. Only atoms or molecules with the right velocity will be repumped and laser slowed. Such scheme is more feasible for molecules with complex energy sturcutres. We apply this scheme for molecules with large Land\'e g-factor of the excited states and polyatomic molecules, and it shows a better slowing efficiency.

Abstract:Ultracold molecular gases are promising as an avenue to rich many-body physics, quantum chemistry, quantum information, and precision measurements. This richness, which flows from the complex internal structure of molecules, makes the creation of ultracold molecular gases using traditional methods (laser plus evaporative cooling) a challenge, in particular due to the spontaneous decay of molecules into dark states. We propose a way to circumvent this key bottleneck using an all-optical method for decelerating molecules using stimulated absorption and emission with a single ultrafast laser. We further describe single-photon cooling of the decelerating molecules that exploits their high dark state pumping rates, turning the principal obstacle to molecular laser cooling into an advantage. Cooling and deceleration may be applied simultaneously and continuously to load molecules into a trap. We discuss implementation details including multi-level numerical simulations of strontium monohydride (SrH). These techniques are applicable to a large number of molecular species and atoms with the only requirement being an electric dipole transition that can be accessed with an ultrafast laser.

Abstract:We present a thorough analysis of a Zeeman slower for sodium atoms made of permanent magnets in a Halbach configuration. Due to the orientation of the magnetic field, the polarization of the slowing laser beam cannot be purely circular, leading to optical leakages into dark states. To circumvent this effect, we propose an atomic state preparation stage that is able to significantly increase the performance of the Zeeman slower. After a careful theoretical analysis of the problem, we experimentally implement an optical pumping stage leading to an increase in the magneto-optical trap loading rate by 3.5. Such a method is easy to set up and could be extended to other Zeeman slower architectures.

Abstract:We have demonstrated that supersonic beams of oxygen molecules (O-2) in the ground rotational state were slowed to a near standstill by a linear Zeeman decelerator and successfully confined spatially in an anti-Helmholtz magnetic trap. The translational temperature of the decelerated O-2 molecules was about 800 mK. The demonstrated trapping capability of paramagnetic species opens up various possibilities for the investigation of cold collisions and reactions of various radicals in the sub-kelvin regime by spatially confining them in a magnetic trap.

Abstract:We propose a general Zeeman slower scheme applicable to the majority of the laser-coolable molecules. Different from previous schemes, we apply a careful modulation on the repump laser and guarantee the velocity selectivity through the polarization selection rules. Only atoms or molecules with the right velocity will be laser slowed. Such a scheme is more feasible for molecules with complex energy structures. We apply this scheme for molecules with a large Lande g factor of the excited states, i.e., g(e) > 0.1, and polyatomic molecules with one-dimensional numerical simulations. The results show a better slowing efficiency with about 62% of the BaF molecules and 99% of the SrOH molecules being successfully slowed down to a velocity below 15 m/s without the consideration of transverse divergence.

Abstract:From the study of long-range-interacting systems to the simulation of gauge fields, open-shell lanthanide atoms with their large magnetic moment and narrow optical transitions open novel directions in the field of ultracold quantum gases. As for other atomic species, the magnetooptical trap (MOT) is the working horse of experiments but its operation is challenging, due to the large electronic spin of the atoms. Here we present an experimental study of narrow-line dysprosium MOTs. We show that the combination of radiation pressure and gravitational forces leads to a spontaneous polarization of the electronic spin. The spin composition is measured using a Stern–Gerlach separation of spin levels, revealing that the gas becomes almost fully spinpolarized for large laser frequency detunings. In this regime, we reach the optimal operation of the MOT, with samples of typically 3 108 ́ atoms at a temperature of 15 μK. The spin polarization reduces the complexity of the radiative cooling description, which allows for a simple model accounting for our measurements. We also measure the rate of density-dependent atom losses, finding good agreement with a model based on light-induced Van der Waals forces. A minimal two-body loss rate 2 10 11 b ~ ́ cm s is reached in the spin-polarized regime. Our results constitute a benchmark for the experimental study of ultracold gases of magnetic lanthanide atoms.

Abstract:We have recently demonstrated static trapping of ammonia isotopologues in a decelerator that consists of a series of ring-shaped electrodes to which oscillating high voltages are applied [Quintero-Pérez et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 133003 (2013)]. In this paper we provide further details on this traveling wave decelerator and present new experimental data that illustrate the control over molecules that it offers. We analyze the performance of our setup under different deceleration conditions and demonstrate phase-space manipulation of the trapped molecular sample.

Abstract:Laser cooling is used to produce ultracold atoms and molecules for quantum science and precision measurement applications. Molecules are more challenging to cool than atoms due to their vibrational and rotational internal degrees of freedom. Molecular rotations lead to the use of type-II transitions ($F \geq F'$) for magneto-optical trapping (MOT). When typical red detuned light frequencies are applied to these transitions, sub-Doppler heating is induced, resulting in higher temperatures and larger molecular cloud sizes than realized with the type-I MOTs most often used with atoms. To improve type-II MOTs, Jarvis et al. PRL 120, 083201 (2018) proposed a blue-detuned MOT to be applied after initial cooling and capture with a red-detuned MOT. This was successfully implemented (Burau et al. PRL 130, 193401 (2023), Jorapur et al. PRL 132, 163403 (2024), Li et al. PRL 132, 233402 (2024)), realizing colder and denser molecular samples. Very recently, Hallas et al. <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2404.03636" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2404.03636">arXiv:2404.03636</a> (2024) demonstrated a blue-detuned MOT with a "1+2" configuration that resulted in even stronger compression of the molecular cloud. Here, we describe and characterize theoretically the conveyor-belt mechanism that underlies this observed enhanced compression. We perform numerical simulations of the conveyor-belt mechanism using both stochastic Schrödinger equation (SSE) and optical Bloch equation (OBE) approaches. We investigate the conveyor-belt MOT characteristics in relation to laser parameters, g-factors, and the structure of the molecular system.

Abstract:There is substantial interest in producing samples of ultracold molecules for possible applications in quantum computation, quantum simulation of condensed matter systems, precision measurements, controlled chemistry, and high precision spectroscopy. A crucial step to obtaining large samples of ultracold, trapped molecules is developing a means to bridge the gap between typical molecular source velocities (~150-600 m/s) and velocities for which trap loading or confinement is possible (~5-20 m/s). Here we show deceleration of a beam of neutral strontium monofluoride (SrF) molecules using radiative force. Under certain conditions, the deceleration results in a substantial flux of molecules with velocities <50 m/s. The observed slowing, from ~140 m/s, corresponds to scattering ~10000 photons. We also observe longitudinal velocity compression under different conditions. Combined with molecular laser cooling techniques, this lays the groundwork to create slow and cold molecular beams suitable for trap loading.

Abstract:Different from atoms, molecules have unique properties, and play an important role in the research of atomic, molecular and optical physics. Cold molecules have important applications in science and have been studied for more than 20 years. But traditional methods, such as the Stark decelerator, have hit a bottleneck: it is hard to increase the phase space density of molecules. Extending the direct laser-cooling technique to new molecular species has recently been a hot topic and also a big challenge. In this review paper, on one hand, we make a brief review to recent progresses on the direct laser cooling of polar molecules. On the other hand, a demonstration on the feasibility of laser cooling BaF molecule has been experimentally illustrated, including the analysis on the molecular energy levels, measurements of the high-resolution spectroscopy, efficient pre-cooling and state preparation via buffer-gas cooling and detailed investigations on the molcule-light interactions. All these results not only pave the way for future laser-cooling and -trapping experiments, but also serve as a reference for the laser-cooling explorations on new molecular species.

Abstract:We propose a strategy to enhance the atom-to-molecule conversion efficiency near a Feshbach resonance. Based on the mean-field approximation, we derive the fixed point solutions of the classical Hamiltonian. Rabi oscillation between the atomic and molecular states around fixed point solutions and its oscillation period are discussed. By designing a sequence of magnetic field pulses in analogy with Ramsey experiments, we show that a much higher atom-to-molecule conversion efficiency can be accessed by tuning the pulse durations appropriately.

Abstract:We present a magnetically enhanced laser cooling scheme applicable to multi-level type-II transitions and further diatomic molecules with adiabatic transfer. An angled magnetic field is introduced to not only remix the dark states, but also decompose the multi-level system into several two-level sub-systems in time-ordering, hence allowing multiple photon momentum transfer. For complex multi-level diatomic molecules, although the enhancement gets weakened, our simulations still predict a $\sim 4\times$ larger value of the maximum achievable cooling force and a wider coolable velocity range compared to the conventional Doppler cooling. A reduced dependence on spontaneous emission of this scheme makes laser cooling a molecule with leakage channels become a feasibility.

Abstract:Submitted for the DAMOP14 Meeting of The American Physical Society A new apparatus for the manipulation of polar KRb molecules JACOB COVEY, BO YAN, STEVEN MOSES, BRYCE GADWAY, DEBORAH JIN, JUN YE, JILA/University of Colorado-Boulder — Long-range dipolar interactions can facilitate understanding of strongly interacting many-body quantum systems with phenomena such as quantum magnetism. While we have used polar molecules pinned in a three-dimensional optical lattice to realize a spin-exchange model, the absence of an external electric field precluded the study of the full spin1/2 Hamiltonian that includes the Ising interaction. Moreover, manipulation of dipolar properties of a bulk molecular gas is also desired. We report on progress towards the second generation of our KRb polar molecule apparatus that will allow for large electric fields with the flexibility to apply gradients of the field in arbitrary directions. The same electrodes that supply large DC electric fields can also provide AC fields for driving rotational transitions to encode spin, where the relative angle between the AC and DC fields can be tuned to control the polarization of the microwave field. Moreover, the geometry of the system is amenable to high resolution optical detection of the molecules. We plan to implement these tools to perform dipolar evaporative cooling of our spin-polarized fermionic molecular gas. A slow and dark atomic beam

Abstract:We demonstrate a method to produce a very slow atomic beam from a vapour cell magneto-optical trap. Atoms are extracted from the trap using the radiation pressure imbalance caused by a push beam. An additional transfer beam placed near the center of the trap transfers the atomic beam into an off-resonant state. The velocity of the atomic beam has been varied by changing the intensity of the push beam or the position of the transfer beam. The method can be used to generate a continuous, magnetically guided atomic beam in a dark state.

Abstract:The capture of a moving atom by a non-dissipative trap, such as an optical dipole trap, requires the removal of the excessive kinetic energy of the atom. In this article we develop a mechanism to harvest ultra cold atoms from a guided atom beam into an optical dipole trap by removing their directed kinetic energy. We propose a continuous loading scheme where this is accomplished via deceleration by a magnetic potential barrier followed by optical pumping to the energetically lowest Zeeman sublevel. We theoretically investigate the application of this scheme to the transfer of ultra cold chromium atoms from a magnetically guided atom beam into a deep optical dipole trap. We discuss the realization of a suitable magnetic field configuration. Based on numerical simulations of the loading process we analyze the feasibility and efficiency of our loading scheme.

Abstract:Metastable helium molecules (He$_2^*$) have been generated by striking a discharge in a supersonic expansion of helium gas from a pulsed valve. When operating the pulsed valve at room temperature, 77K, and 10K, the mean velocity of the supersonic beam was measured to be 1900m/s, 980m/s, and 530m/s, respectively. A 55-stage Zeeman decelerator operated in a phase-stable manner was then used to further reduce the beam velocity and tune it in the range between 100 and 150m/s. The internal-state distribution of the decelerated sample was established by photoionization spectroscopy.

Abstract:Employing a two-stage cryogenic buffer gas cell, we produce a cold, hydrodynamically extracted beam of calcium monohydride molecules with a near effusive velocity distribution. Beam dynamics, thermalization and slowing are studied using laser spectroscopy. The key to this hybrid, effusive-like beam source is a "slowing cell" placed immediately after a hydrodynamic, cryogenic source [Patterson et al., J. Chem. Phys., 2007, 126, 154307]. The resulting CaH beams are created in two regimes. One modestly boosted beam has a forward velocity of vf = 65 m/s, a narrow velocity spread, and a flux of 10^9 molecules per pulse. The other has the slowest forward velocity of vf = 40 m/s, a longitudinal temperature of 3.6 K, and a flux of 5x10^8 molecules per pulse.
