Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) is now widely used to facilitate social interaction, but its impact on social relationships and communication is not well understood. We study the social consequences of one of the most pervasive AI applications: algorithmic response suggestions ("smart replies"). Two randomized experiments (n = 1036) provide evidence that a commercially-deployed AI changes how people interact with and perceive one another in pro-social and anti-social ways. We find that using algorithmic responses increases communication efficiency, use of positive emotional language, and positive evaluations by communication partners. However, consistent with common assumptions about the negative implications of AI, people are evaluated more negatively if they are suspected to be using algorithmic responses. Thus, even though AI can increase communication efficiency and improve interpersonal perceptions, it risks changing users' language production and continues to be viewed negatively.

The Impact of Artificial Intelligence Replacing Humans in Making Human Resource Management Decisions on Fairness: A Case of Resume Screening

Abstract:A growing number of organizations have used artificial intelligence (AI) to make decisions to replace human resource (HR) workers; yet, the fairness perceptions of the people affected by the decision are still unclear. Given that an organization's sustainability is significantly influenced by individuals' perceptions of fairness, this study takes a resume-screening scenario as an example to explore the impact of AI replacing humans on applicants' perceptions of fairness. This study adopts the method of the online scenario experiment and uses SPSS to analyze the experimental data: 189 and 214 people, respectively, participated in two online scenarios, with two independent variables of decision makers (AI and humans), two dependent variables of procedural and distributive fairness, and two moderating variables of outcome favorability and the expertise of AI. The results show that the applicants tend to view AI screening resumes as less fair than humans. Furthermore, moderating effects exist between the outcome favorability and the expertise of AI. This study reveals the impact of AI substituting for humans in decision-making on fairness. The proposed model can help organizations use AI to screen resumes more effectively. And future research can explore the collaboration between humans and AI to make human resource management decisions.

AI-Mediated Communication: How the Perception that Profile Text was Written by AI Affects Trustworthiness

Abstract:We are entering an era of AI-Mediated Communication (AI-MC) where interpersonal communication is not only mediated by technology, but is optimized, augmented, or generated by artificial intelligence. Our study takes a first look at the potential impact of AI-MC on online self-presentation. In three experiments we test whether people find Airbnb hosts less trustworthy if they believe their profiles have been written by AI. We observe a new phenomenon that we term the Replicant Effect: Only when participants thought they saw a mixed set of AI- and human-written profiles, they mistrusted hosts whose profiles were labeled as or suspected to be written by AI. Our findings have implications for the design of systems that involve AI technologies in online self-presentation and chart a direction for future work that may upend or augment key aspects of Computer-Mediated Communication theory.

Does Artificial Intelligence Help or Hurt Gender Diversity? Evidence from Two Field Experiments on Recruitment in Tech

Abstract:The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in recruitment is rapidly increasing. In this paper, we partner with an AI recruitment firm and use two field experiments to study how AI in recruitment impacts gender diversity in the male-dominated technology sector, both overall and separately for labor supply and demand. We find that the use of AI in recruitment changes the gender distribution of potential hires, in some cases more than doubling the fraction of top applicants that are women. This change is generated by better outcomes for women in both supply and demand. On the supply side, we observe that the use of AI reduces the gender gap in application rates. Complementary survey evidence suggests that this is driven by female jobseekers believing that there is less bias in recruitment when assessed by AI instead of human evaluators. On the demand side, we find that providing evaluators with applicants’ AI scores closes the gender gap in assessments that otherwise disadvantage female applicants. Finally, we show that the AI tool would have to be substantially biased against women to result in a lower level of gender diversity than found without AI.

Abstract:Purpose Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to be deployed in workplaces. While there are many positive outcomes of AI integration, understanding the extent of its consequences on employees is limited. Hence, this study examines employee perceptions of AI and the consequent influences on employee job attitudes and career behaviors. Utilizing the career self-management perspective, the authors explore the mechanisms related to employee perceptions of AI and potential career exploration behaviors. Design/methodology/approach The authors tested several hypotheses using employee survey data ( N = 345 call center agents) collected from a firm that recently integrated AI in their operations. The authors collected data on four occasions (one-week intervals between data collection) to determine employee perceptions of AI taking over jobs (Time 1); job insecurity (Time 2); psychological distress (Time 3); and career exploration behavior (Time 4). Findings The findings reveal that perceptions of AI taking over jobs are significantly associated with higher career exploration behaviors. In addition, the authors found job insecurity and psychological distress as pathways that explain why employees having perceptions of AI taking over their jobs influences their career exploration behaviors. Originality/value These findings fill a gap in the literature by revealing how AI integration in the workplace, despite its many positive outcomes for organizations, can have a negative influence on employees. The negative employee perceptions of AI can lead to career exploration behaviors. From the career self-management perspective, the authors offer novel insights that have practical implications for talent management, particularly the need to communicate effectively to employees about AI integration in the workplace to avoid them feeling threatened and leaving their jobs.

Abstract:AI-Mediated Communication (AI-MC) is interpersonal communication that involves an artificially intelligent system that can modify, augment, or even generate content to achieve communicative and relational goals. AI-MC is increasingly involved in human communication and has the potential to impact core aspects of human communication, such as language production, interpersonal perception and task performance. Through a between-subjects experimental design we examine how these processes are influenced when integrating AI-generated language in the form of suggested text responses (Google's smart replies) into a text-based referential communication task. Our study replicates and extends the impacts of a positivity bias in AI-generated language and introduces the adjacency pair framework into the study of AI-MC. We also find preliminary yet mixed evidence to suggest that AI-generated language has the potential to undermine some dimensions of interpersonal perception, such as social attraction. This study contributes important concepts for future work in AI-MC and offers findings with implications for the design of AI systems in human-to-human communication.
People judge others more harshly after talking to bots

Abstract:People now commonly interact with Artificial Intelligence (AI) agents. How do these interactions shape how humans perceive each other? In two preregistered studies (total N = 1,261), we show that people evaluate other humans more harshly after interacting with an AI (compared with an unrelated purported human). In Study 1, participants who worked on a creative task with AIs (versus purported humans) subsequently rated another purported human's work more negatively. Study 2 replicated this effect and demonstrated that the results hold even when participants believed their evaluation would not be shared with the purported human. Exploratory analyses of participants' conversations show that prior to their human evaluations they were more demanding, more instrumental and displayed less positive affect towards AIs (versus purported humans). These findings point to a potentially worrisome side effect of the exponential rise in human-AI interactions.

Abstract:The proliferation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in workplaces stands to change the way humans work, with job satisfaction intrinsically linked to work life. Existing research on human-AI collaboration tends to prioritize performance over the experiential aspects of work. In contrast, this paper explores the impact of AI on job decency and meaningfulness in workplaces. Through interviews in the Information Technology (IT) domain, we not only examined the current work environment, but also explored the perceived evolution of the workplace ecosystem with the introduction of an AI. Findings from the preliminary exploratory study reveal that respondents tend to visualize a workplace where humans continue to play a dominant role, even with the introduction of advanced AIs. In this prospective scenario, AI is seen as serving as a complement rather than replacing the human workforce. Furthermore, respondents believe that the introduction of AI will maintain or potentially increase overall job satisfaction.

Artificial intelligence video interviewing for employment: perspectives from applicants, companies, developer and academicians

Abstract:Purpose In 2018, an artificial intelligence (AI) interview platform was introduced and adopted by companies in Korea. This study aims to explore the perspectives of applicants who have experienced an AI-based interview through this platform and examines the opinions of companies, a platform developer and academia. Design/methodology/approach This study uses a phenomenological approach. The participants, who had recent experience of AI video interviews, were recruited offline and online. Eighteen job applicants in their 20s, two companies that have adopted this interview platform, a software developer who created the platform and three professors participated in the study. To collect data, focus group interviews and in-depth interviews were conducted. Findings As a result, all of them believed that an AI-based interview was more efficient than a traditional one in terms of cost and time savings and is likely to be adopted by more companies in the future. They pointed to the possibility of data bias requiring an improvement in AI accountability. Applicants perceived an AI-based interview to be better than traditional evaluation procedures in procedural fairness, objectivity and consistency of algorithms. However, some applicants were dissatisfied about being assessed by AI. Digital divide and automated inequality were recurring themes in this study. Originality/value The study is important, as it addresses the real application of AI in detail, and a case study of smart hiring tools would be valuable in finding the practical and theoretical implications of such hiring in the fields of employment and AI.

Abstract:The process of conducting interviews plays a pivotal role in human resource management, as it directly influences the selection of candidates and ultimately shapes the composition of an organization's workforce. However, traditional interview methods are often subjective and prone to biases, leading to suboptimal decision-making. In recent years, the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies has provided new opportunities to revolutionize interview analysis and improve decision-making in the hiring process.This research paper explores the application of AI-enabled interview analysis in human resource management, aiming to unveil insights and enhance decision-making. The study focuses on three main areas: interview data collection, analysis, and decision-making support. AI technologies, including natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning algorithms, are leveraged to analyze interview transcripts, audio recordings, and other relevant data sources.By analyzing interview data using AI, this research uncovers hidden patterns, linguistic cues, and behavioural indicators that may be missed by human interviewers. These insights provide a deeper understanding of candidate suitability, skills, and competencies, enabling HR professionals to make more informed and objective decisions. Moreover, AI algorithms can be trained to identify biases and mitigate their impact, leading to fairer and more inclusive hiring practices. The research also investigates the potential challenges and ethical considerations associated with AI- enabled interview analysis. Concerns related to privacy, data security, algorithmic biases, and the role of human judgment in decision-making are examined, highlighting the need for responsible implementation and ongoing monitoring.To validate the effectiveness of AI-enabled interview analysis, a mixed-methods approach is employed, combining quantitative data analysis and qualitative feedback from HR professionals. The study presents empirical evidence demonstrating the benefits of AI technologies in improving decision-making accuracy, efficiency, and fairness. Abstract:Applications based on artificial intelligence (AI applications) play an increasing role in the public sector and invoke political discussions. Research gaps exist regarding the disclosure effects – reactions to disclosure of the use of AI applications – and the deployment effect – efficiency gains in data-savvy tasks. This study analyzes disclosure effects and explores the deployment of an AI application in a pre-registered field experiment (n=2,000) co-designed with a public organization in the context of employer-driven recruitment. The results show that disclosing the use of the AI application leads to significantly less interest in an offer among job candidates. The explorative analysis of the deployment of the AI application indicates that the person-job fit determined by the leaders can be predicted by the AI application. The study offers a theoretical and empirical disentanglement of the disclosure effect and deployment effect to guide evaluations of AI applications in the public sector. It contributes to the understanding of how AI applications can shape public policy and management decisions and discusses benefits and downsides of disclosing and deploying AI applications in the public sector and in employer-driven public recruitment.
Building trust in automatic video interviews using various AI interfaces: Tangibility, immediacy, and transparency

Abstract:As the demand for automatic video interviews powered by artificial intelligence (AI) increases among employers in the postpandemic era, so do concerns over job applicants' trust in the technology. There are various forms of AI-based video interviews with and without the features of tangibility, immediacy, and transparency used for preemployment screening, and these features may distinctively influence applicants' trust in the technology and whether they engage in or disengage from the hiring process accordingly. This field study involved designing a test of the effect of various forms of AI-based video interviews on interviewees' cognitive and affective trust based on the self-reporting of 152 real job applicants. The study found that AI used in asynchronous video interviews (AI-AVI) increased applicants' cognitive trust from that in the non-AI condition. Moreover, when the AI-AVI had features of tangibility and transparency, the applicants’ cognitive and affective trust increased. However, the feature of immediacy did not have a statistically significant impact. Contrary to concern over the potential negative effects caused by AI and its features, no statistically significant impacts were found in this study.

Abstract:In the global war for talent, traditional recruiting methods are failing to cope with the talent competition, so employers need the right recruiting tools to fill open positions. First, we explore how talent acquisition has transitioned from digital 1.0 to 3.0 (AI-enabled) as the digital tool redesigns business. The technology of artificial intelligence has facilitated the daily work of recruiters and improved recruitment efficiency. Further, the study analyzes that AI plays an important role in each stage of recruitment, such as recruitment promotion, job search, application, screening, assessment, and coordination. Next, after interviewing with AI recruitment stakeholders (recruiters, managers, and applicants), the study discusses their acceptance criteria for each recruitment stage; stakeholders also raised concerns about AI recruitment. Finally, we suggest that managers need to be concerned about the cost of AI recruitment, legal privacy, recruitment bias, and the possibility of replacing recruiters. Overall, the study answers the following questions: (1) How artificial intelligence is used in various stages of the recruitment process. (2) Stakeholder (applicants, recruiters, managers) perceptions of AI application in recruitment. (3) Suggestions for managers to adopt AI in recruitment. In general, the discussion will contribute to the study of the use of AI in recruitment, as well as providing recommendations for implementing AI recruitment in practice.

Abstract:Abstract Using artificial intelligence (AI) to make decisions in human resource management (HRM) raises questions of how fair employees perceive these decisions to be and whether they experience respectful treatment (i.e., interactional justice). In this experimental survey study with open-ended qualitative questions, we examine decision making in six HRM functions and manipulate the decision maker (AI or human) and decision valence (positive or negative) to determine their impact on individuals’ experiences of interactional justice, trust, dehumanization, and perceptions of decision-maker role appropriateness. In terms of decision makers, the use of human decision makers over AIs generally resulted in better perceptions of respectful treatment. In terms of decision valence, people experiencing positive over negative decisions generally resulted in better perceptions of respectful treatment. In instances where these cases conflict, on some indicators people preferred positive AI decisions over negative human decisions. Qualitative responses show how people identify justice concerns with both AI and human decision making. We outline implications for theory, practice, and future research.

Designing Human-AI Systems: Anthropomorphism and Framing Bias on Human-AI Collaboration

Abstract:AI is redefining how humans interact with technology, leading to a synergetic collaboration between the two. Nevertheless, the effects of human cognition on this collaboration remain unclear. This study investigates the implications of two cognitive biases, anthropomorphism and framing effect, on human-AI collaboration within a hiring setting. Subjects were asked to select job candidates with the help of an AI-powered recommendation tool. The tool was manipulated to have either human-like or robot-like characteristics and presented its recommendations in either positive or negative frames. The results revealed that the framing of AI's recommendations had no significant influence on subjects' decisions. In contrast, anthropomorphism significantly affected subjects' agreement with AI recommendations. Contrary to expectations, subjects were less likely to agree with the AI if it had human-like characteristics. These findings demonstrate that cognitive biases can impact human-AI collaboration and highlight the need for tailored approaches to AI product design, rather than a single, universal solution.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence-mediated communication (AI-MC) is a new form of communication where AI algorithms modify, augment, or generate messages for its human principal. However, little is known about how AI-MC influences impression formation and interpersonal dynamics in the literature. This study examines how AI mediation affects impression formation in AI-MC using a moderated mediation model. We conducted an experiment with 66 participants who played the Alternated Repeated Ultimatum Game with a human-agent group. We manipulated the fairness of the AI agent and the entitativity of the human-agent group. The results show that the fairness of the AI agent influenced the participants’ impressions of both the AI agent and the human. This effect was mediated by the impression of AI and moderated by the entitativity of the group. The quantitative evidence shows that AI can influence impressions in AI-MC and suggests that modifying AI behavior can enhance social perceptions and relations.

“My AI must have been broken”: How AI Stands to Reshape Human Communication

Abstract:From autocomplete and smart replies to video filters and deepfakes, we increasingly live in a world where communication between humans is augmented by artificial intelligence. AI often operates on behalf of a human communicator by recommending, suggesting, modifying, or generating messages to accomplish communication goals. We call this phenomenon AI-Mediated Communication (or AI-MC) [1, 4]. While AI-MC has the potential of making human communication more efficient, it impacts other aspects of our communication in ways that are not yet well understood. Over the last three years, my collaborators and I have been documenting the impact of AI-MC on communication outcomes, language use, interpersonal trust, and more. The talk will outline early experimental findings from this work, mostly led by Cornell and Stanford graduate students Maurice Jakesch, Hannah Mieczkowski, and Jess Hohenstein. For example, the research shows that AI-MC involvement can result in language shifting towards positivity [2, 7]; impact the evaluation of others [2, 4]; change the extent to which we take ownership over our messages [6]; and shift assignment of blame for communication outcomes [3]. Given the impact of AI-MC on interpersonal evaluations, the talk will also cover our recent research examining the (mostly false) heuristics humans use when evaluating whether text was written by AI [5]. Overall, AI-MC raises significant practical and ethical concerns as it stands to reshape human communication, calling for new approaches to the development and regulation of these technologies.

Social perception in Human-AI teams: Warmth and competence predict receptivity to AI teammates

Abstract:Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) promise a future where teams consist of people and intelligent machines, such as robots or virtual agents. In order for human-AI teams (HATs) to succeed, human team members will need to be receptive to their new AI counterparts. In this study, we draw on a tripartite model of human newcomer receptivity, which includes three components: reflection, knowledge utilization, and psychological acceptance. We hypothesize that two aspects of social perception—warmth and competence—are critical predictors of human receptivity to a new AI teammate. Study 1 uses a video vignette design in which participants imagine adding one of eight AI teammates to a referent team. Study 2 leverages a Wizard of Oz methodology in laboratory teams. In addition to testing the effects of perceived warmth and competence on receptivity components, Study 2 also explores the influence of receptivity components on perceived HAT viability. Though both studies find that perceived warmth and competence affect receptivity, we find competence is particularly important for knowledge utilization and psychological acceptance. Further, results of Study 2 show that psychological acceptance is positively related to perceived HAT viability. Implications for future research on social perception of AI teammates are discussed.

Abstract:In the field of HRM, artificial intelligence (AI) has already been touted as a potentially useful technique, yet there has been scant academic study conducted on the subject. In this study, we aim to apply the technology, organization, and environment (TOE) model from information systems research as well as transaction cost theory to gain a deeper understanding of the factors that promote and inhibit the adoption of artificial intelligence by businesses in the context of employee recruitment. Survey findings from 296 business organizations reveal that businesses' perceptions of AI's complexities are a barrier to its implementation, whereas technological competency and regulatory backing are factors that boost its use. The distinct features of AI, the size of the organization, or the industry have no impact in determining whether an enterprise would use AI. Transaction costs also have a moderating effect on organizations' technological competency and the power of technological complexity.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (A.I.) increasingly suffuses everyday life. However, people are frequently reluctant to interact with A.I. systems. This challenges both the deployment of beneficial A.I. technology and the development of deep learning systems that depend on humans for oversight, direction, and regulation. Nine studies (N = 3,300) demonstrate that social-cognitive processes guide human interactions across a diverse range of real-world A.I. systems. Across studies, perceived warmth and competence emerge prominently in participants' impressions of A.I. systems. Judgments of warmth and competence systematically depend on human-A.I. interdependence and autonomy. In particular, participants perceive systems that optimize interests aligned with human interests as warmer and systems that operate independently from human direction as more competent. Finally, a prisoner's dilemma game shows that warmth and competence judgments predict participants' willingness to cooperate with a deep-learning system. These results underscore the generality of intent detection to perceptions of a broad array of algorithmic actors.
