Abstract:The abundance of distractors in the world poses a major challenge to our brain's limited processing capacity, but little is known about how selective attention modulates stimulus representations in the brain to reduce interference and support durable target memory. Here, we collected functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data in a selective attention task in which target and distractor pictures of different visual categories were simultaneously presented. Participants were asked to selectively process the target according to the effective cue, either before the encoding period (i.e., perceptual attention) or the maintenance period (i.e., reflective attention). On the next day, participants were asked to perform a memory recognition task in the scanner in which the targets, distractors, and novel items were presented in a pseudorandom order. Behavioral results showed that perceptual attention was better at enhancing target memory and reducing distractor memory than reflective attention, although the overall memory capacity (memory for both target and distractor) was comparable. Using multiple-voxel pattern analysis of the neural data, we found more robust target representation and weaker distractor representation in working memory for perceptual attention than for reflective attention. Interestingly, perceptual attention partially shifted the regions involved in maintaining the target representation from the visual cortex to the parietal cortex. Furthermore, the targets and distractors simultaneously presented in the perceptual attention condition showed reduced pattern similarity in the parietal cortex during retrieval compared to items not presented together. This neural pattern repulsion positively correlated with individuals' recognition of both targets and distractors. These results emphasize the critical role of selective attention in transforming memory representations to reduce interference and improve long-term memory performance.

Abstract:Attention enables the selective processing of relevant information. Two types of selective attention, spatial and feature attention, have separable neural effects but in real life are often used together. Here, we asked how these types of attention interact to affect information coding in a frontoparietal 'multiple-demand' (MD) network, essential for attentional control. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with multivariate pattern analysis, we examined how covert attention to object features (colour or shape) and spatial locations (left or right) influences coding of task-related stimulus information. We found that spatial and feature attention interacted multiplicatively on information coding in MD and visual regions, such that there was above-chance decoding of the attended feature of the attended object and no detectable coding of visually equivalent but behaviourally irrelevant aspects of the visual display. The attended information had a multidimensional neural representation, with stimulus information (e.g., colour) and discrimination difficulty (distance from the categorical decision boundary) reflected in separate dimensions. Rather than boosting processing of whole objects or relevant features across space, our results suggest neural activity reflects precise tuning to relevant information, indicating a highly selective control process that codes behaviourally relevant information across multiple dimensions.

Overlapping neural representations for selection in attention and working memory

Abstract:Although many studies point to qualitative similarities between working memory (WM) and attention, the degree to which these two constructs rely on common neural substrates remains unclear. In this study, we used fMRI to compare the patterns of neural activity evoked during attentional selection and selection within WM. Eleven participants selected one of three visual objects either while that information was present on the screen (i.e., attentional selection) or after it disappeared (i.e., WM selection ). Our measure of selection was how well classifiers trained on the pattern of BOLD activation could decode the location of the selected object. Critically, the classifiers were trained and tested either in the same condition (e.g., trained and tested on attentional selection; within-condition decoding) or different conditions (e.g., trained on attentional selection and tested on WM selection; across-condition decoding). Comparing the within- and across- condition performance provides quantitative evidence for the amount of overlap in neural substrates between the selection process in WM and attention. We observed significantly above-chance decoding performance both within- and across-conditions in visual cortex and intraparietal sulcus. The time-series of decoding performance within- and across-conditions was consistent with the time-course of the selection process, confirming the classifiers decoded the selection process itself. Importantly, the above-chance within- and across- condition performance was largely comparable in these areas—the ratio of across-condition to within-condition performance is larger than 0.91. These results point to a strikingly high overlap in the neural representations between attentional and WM selection.
Spatial and Feature-selective Attention Have Distinct, Interacting Effects on Population-level Tuning

Abstract:Abstract Attention can be deployed in different ways: When searching for a taxi in New York City, we can decide where to attend (e.g., to the street) and what to attend to (e.g., yellow cars). Although we use the same word to describe both processes, nonhuman primate data suggest that these produce distinct effects on neural tuning. This has been challenging to assess in humans, but here we used an opportunity afforded by multivariate decoding of MEG data. We found that attending to an object at a particular location and attending to a particular object feature produced effects that interacted multiplicatively. The two types of attention induced distinct patterns of enhancement in occipital cortex, with feature-selective attention producing relatively more enhancement of small feature differences and spatial attention producing relatively larger effects for larger feature differences. An information flow analysis further showed that stimulus representations in occipital cortex were Granger-caused by coding in frontal cortices earlier in time and that the timing of this feedback matched the onset of attention effects. The data suggest that spatial and feature-selective attention rely on distinct neural mechanisms that arise from frontal-occipital information exchange, interacting multiplicatively to selectively enhance task-relevant information.

Attention Modulates Human Visual Responses to Objects by Tuning Sharpening

Abstract:Visual stimuli compete with each other for cortical processing and attention biases this competition in favor of the attended stimulus. How does the relationship between the stimuli affect the strength of this attentional bias? Here, we used functional MRI to explore the effect of target-distractor similarity in neural representation on attentional modulation in the human visual cortex using univariate and multivariate pattern analyses. Using stimuli from four object categories (human bodies, cats, cars and houses), we investigated attentional effects in the primary visual area V1, the object-selective regions LO and pFs, the body-selective region EBA, and the scene-selective region PPA. We demonstrated that the strength of the attentional bias towards the target is not fixed but decreases with increasing target-distractor similarity. Simulations provided evidence that this result pattern is explained by tuning sharpening rather than an increase in gain. Our findings provide a mechanistic explanation for behavioral effects of target-distractor similarity on attentional biases and suggest tuning sharpening as the underlying mechanism in object-based attention.

Temporal attention amplifies stimulus information in fronto-cingulate cortex at an intermediate processing stage

Abstract:The human brain faces significant constraints in its ability to process every item in a sequence of stimuli. Voluntary temporal attention can selectively prioritize a task-relevant item over its temporal competitors to alleviate these constraints. However, it remains unclear when and where in the brain selective temporal attention modulates the visual representation of a prioritized item. Here, we manipulated temporal attention to successive stimuli in a two-target temporal cueing task, while controlling for temporal expectation with fully predictable stimulus timing. We used MEG and time-resolved decoding to track the spatiotemporal evolution of stimulus representations in human observers. We found that temporal attention enhanced the representation of the first target around 250 milliseconds after target onset, in a contiguous region spanning left frontal cortex and cingulate cortex. The results indicate that voluntary temporal attention recruits cortical regions beyond the ventral stream at an intermediate processing stage to amplify the representation of a target stimulus. This routing of stimulus information to anterior brain regions may provide protection from interference in visual cortex by a subsequent stimulus. Thus, voluntary temporal attention may have distinctive neural mechanisms to support specific demands of the sequential processing of stimuli.

Abstract:Though dividing one’s attention between two input streams typically impairs performance, detecting a behaviorally relevant stimulus can sometimes enhance the encoding of unrelated information presented at the same time. Previous research has shown that selection of this kind boosts visual cortical activity and memory for concurrent items. An important unanswered question is whether such effects are reflected in processing quality and functional connectivity in visual regions and in the hippocampus. In this fMRI study, participants were asked to memorize a stream of naturalistic images and press a button only when they heard a predefined target tone (400 or 1,200 Hz, counterbalanced). Images could be presented with a target tone, with a distractor tone, or without a tone. Auditory target detection increased activity throughout the ventral visual cortex but lowered it in the hippocampus. Enhancements in functional connectivity between the ventral visual cortex and the hippocampus were also observed following auditory targets. Multi-voxel pattern classification of image category was more accurate on target tone trials than on distractor and no tone trials in the fusiform gyrus and parahippocampal gyrus. This effect was stronger in visual cortical clusters whose activity was more correlated with the hippocampus on target tone than on distractor tone trials. In agreement with accounts suggesting that subcortical noradrenergic influences play a role in the attentional boost effect, auditory target detection also caused an increase in locus coeruleus activity and phasic pupil responses. These findings outline a network of cortical and subcortical regions that are involved in the selection and processing of information presented at behaviorally relevant moments.

Abstract:Abstract Attention selectively routes the most behaviorally relevant information from the stream of sensory inputs through the hierarchy of cortical areas. Previous studies have shown that visual attention depends on the phase of oscillatory brain activities. These studies mainly focused on the stimulus presentation period, rather than the pre-stimulus period. Here, we hypothesize that selective attention controls the phase of oscillatory neural activities to efficiently process relevant information. We document an attentional modulation of pre-stimulus inter-trial phase coherence (a measure of deviation between instantaneous phases of trials) of low frequency local field potentials (LFP) in visual area MT of macaque monkeys. Our data reveal that phase coherence increases following a spatial cue deploying attention towards the receptive field of the recorded neural population. We further show that the attentional enhancement of phase coherence is positively correlated with the modulation of the stimulus-induced firing rate, and importantly, a higher phase coherence is associated with a faster behavioral response. These results suggest a functional utilization of intrinsic neural oscillatory activities for an enhanced processing of upcoming stimuli.

Abstract:Abstract Objects play an important role in guiding spatial attention through a cluttered visual environment. We used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (ER-fMRI) to measure brain activity during cued discrimination tasks requiring subjects to orient attention either to a region bounded by an object (object-based spatial attention) or to an unbounded region of space (location-based spatial attention) in anticipation of an upcoming target. Comparison between the two tasks revealed greater activation when attention selected a region bounded by an object. This activation was strongly lateralized to the left hemisphere and formed a widely distributed network including (a) attentional structures in parietal and temporal cortex and thalamus, (b) ventral-stream object processing structures in occipital, inferior-temporal, and parahippocampal cortex, and (c) control structures in medial-and dorsolateral-prefrontal cortex. These results suggest that object-based spatial selection is achieved by imposing additional constraints over and above those processes already operating to achieve selection of an unbounded region. In addition, ER-fMRI methodology allowed a comparison of validly versus invalidly cued trials, thereby delineating brain structures involved in the reorientation of attention after its initial deployment proved incorrect. All areas of activation that differentiated between these two trial types resulted from greater activity during the invalid trials. This outcome suggests that all brain areas involved in attentional orienting and task performance in response to valid cues are also involved on invalid trials. During invalid trials, additional brain regions are recruited when a perceiver recovers from invalid cueing and reorients attention to a target appearing at an uncued location. Activated brain areas specific to attentional reorientation were strongly right-lateralized and included posterior temporal and inferior parietal regions previously implicated in visual attention processes, as well as prefrontal regions that likely subserve control processes, particularly related to inhibition of inappropriate responding.

Abstract:When selective attention is devoted to one of multiple stimuli within receptive fields of neurons in visual area V4, cells respond as if only the attended stimulus was present. The underlying neural mechanisms are still debated, but computational studies suggest that a small rate advantage for neural populations passing the attended signal to V4 suffices to establish such selective processing. We challenged this theory by pairing stimuli with different luminance contrasts, such that attention on a weak target stimulus would have to overcome a large activation difference to a strong distracter. In this situation we found unexpectedly large attentional target facilitation in macaque V1/V2 which far surpasses known magnitudes of attentional modulation. Target facilitation scales with contrast difference and combines with distracter suppression to achieve the required rate advantage. These effects can be explained by a contrast-independent attentional control mechanism with excitatory centre and suppressive surround targeting divisive normalization units.

Abstract:Attentional selection mechanisms in visual cortex involve changes in oscillatory activity in the EEG alpha band (8–12 Hz), with decreased alpha indicating focal cortical enhancement and increased alpha indicating suppression. This has been observed for spatial selective attention and attention to stimulus features such as color versus motion. We investigated whether attention to objects involves similar alpha-mediated changes in focal cortical excitability. In experiment 1, 20 volunteers (8 males; 12 females) were cued (80% predictive) on a trial-by-trial basis to different objects (faces, scenes, or tools). Support vector machine decoding of alpha power patterns revealed that late (>500 ms latency) in the cue-to-target foreperiod, only EEG alpha differed with the to-be-attended object category. In experiment 2, to eliminate the possibility that decoding of the physical features of cues led to our results, 25 participants (9 males; 16 females) performed a similar task where cues were nonpredictive of the object category. Alpha decoding was now only significant in the early (<200 ms) foreperiod. In experiment 3, to eliminate the possibility that task set differences between the different object categories led to our experiment 1 results, 12 participants (5 males; 7 females) performed a predictive cuing task where the discrimination task for different objects was identical across object categories. The results replicated experiment 1. Together, these findings support the hypothesis that the neural mechanisms of visual selective attention involve focal cortical changes in alpha power not only for simple spatial and feature attention, but also for high-level object attention in humans. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Attention is the cognitive function that enables relevant information to be selected from sensory inputs so it can be processed in the support of goal-directed behavior. Visual attention is widely studied, yet the neural mechanisms underlying the selection of visual information remain unclear. Oscillatory EEG activity in the alpha range (8–12 Hz) of neural populations receptive to target visual stimuli may be part of the mechanism, because alpha is thought to reflect focal neural excitability. Here, we show that alpha-band activity, as measured by scalp EEG from human participants, varies with the specific category of object selected by attention. This finding supports the hypothesis that alpha-band activity is a fundamental component of the neural mechanisms of attention.

Abstract:Learning through visual exploration often requires orienting of attention to meaningful information in a cluttered world. Previous work has shown that attention modulates visual cortex activity, with enhanced activity for attended targets and suppressed activity for competing inputs, thus enhancing the visual experience. Here we examined the idea that learning may be engaged differentially with variations in attention orienting mechanisms that drive eye movements during visual search and exploration. We hypothesized that attention orienting mechanisms that engaged suppression of a previously attended location would boost memory encoding of the currently attended target objects to a greater extent than those that involve target enhancement alone. To test this hypothesis we capitalized on the classic spatial cueing task and the inhibition of return (IOR) mechanism (Posner, 1980; Posner, Rafal, & Choate, 1985) to demonstrate that object images encoded in the context of concurrent suppression at a previously attended location were encoded more effectively and remembered better than those encoded without concurrent suppression. Furthermore, fMRI analyses revealed that this memory benefit was driven by attention modulation of visual cortex activity, as increased suppression of the previously attended location in visual cortex during target object encoding predicted better subsequent recognition memory performance. These results suggest that not all attention orienting impacts learning and memory equally.

Neural Processing of Task-Irrelevant but Salient Object: an MEG Study

Abstract:In a cluttered visual environment, in addition to focusing on task-relevant objects, it is also important for attention to be occasionally captured to task-irrelevant but salient stimuli. Our previous EEG study has revealed that attention dynamically coordinates neural representations of multiple objects and flexibly modulates the sampling profile to manage different task demands (Jia et al., 2017). Meanwhile, it remains unclear how the brain deals with task-irrelevant but salient objects and further registers them into the task framework. To address the issue, we recorded magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals from 20 human subjects while they were presented with a multi-object visual display and performed a central fixation task. Notably, one of the items was made salient by being distinct from the others (e.g., red among green, etc.) but was completely task-irrelevant (i.e., demanding central fixation task). Next, we employed a temporal response function (TRF) approach (Liu et al., in press) to dissociate the time-resolved neuronal response that specifically tracks the salient (S-TRF) and non-salient (NS-TRF) items from the same MEG signals. We then performed source analysis on the S-TRF and NS-TRF responses to examine the fine spatiotemporal neuronal profiles. Our data demonstrates that salient object, compared to the non-salient one, first initiated response in right temporoparietal area (TPJ) at about 120 ms, followed by activation in left intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and bilateral frontal area, and finally reached early visual area (EVA). Interestingly, after the information was conveyed back to EVA, salient object showed higher alpha-band response compared to the non-salient one, suggesting a registration process during which the salient but task-irrelevant item was further inhibited. Our results support the crucial role of dorsal attentional network in saliency representation and provide a temporally precise and whole-brain description of how the salient information is processed, transferred, and integrated into the current task context. Attentional enhancement of stimulus activation domains in Macque V4.

Abstract:Visual Area V4 is located in the ventral visual pathway and contains functional domains with different feature preference (Tanigawa et al. 2010). Many electrophysiological papers have shown that the neuronal activity in V4 can be modulated by selective attention. fMRI studies have also shown increase in BOLD activation associated with spatial attention. However little is known about how domain specific activation in V4 is affected by attention. Here we use intrinsic signal optical imaging method to address this question. Using intrinsic signal optical imaging through chronic implanted windows we observed V4 activation in Macaque monkeys performing a covert color-change detection task. In Task1 (Fig. 1a), the monkey was required to detect a subtle color change in one of two gratings (attention in vs. attention out) and to report the direction of color change (from magenta to bluish or to reddish) by making a saccade to one of two targets. In Task2 (Fig. 1b), the monkey was required report the simultaneous change of color and orientation in one grating (attention in vs. passive). In both tasks, when compared to V4 activation during spatially localized change detection (Task1) or when compared to simple fixation of a blank screen (Task2), we found (1) no significant enhancement in domain specific activation magnitude and (2) significant enhancement of domain-domain correlation across stimulus-activated domains (Fig. 2). Further analysis revealed such correlation enhancement during successful trials but not during error trials. In conclusion, utilizing intrinsic signal optical imaging we observed an attention mediated correlation enhancement among the stimulus-activated domains in V4 during change detection task. We propose that directed attention to different locations in space is mediated by magnitude enhancement (Tanigawa et al. Visual periodicity reveals distinct attentional signatures for face and non-face categories

Abstract:Observers can selectively deploy attention to regions of space, moments in time, specific visual features, individual objects, and even specific high-level categories—for example, when keeping an eye out for dogs while jogging. Here, we exploited visual periodicity to examine how category-based attention differentially modulates selective neural processing of face and non-face categories. We combined electroencephalography with a novel frequency-tagging paradigm capable of capturing selective neural responses for multiple visual categories contained within the same rapid image stream (faces/birds in Exp 1; houses/birds in Exp 2). We found that the pattern of attentional enhancement and suppression for face-selective processing is unique compared to other object categories: Where attending to non-face objects strongly enhances their selective neural signals during a later stage of processing (300–500 ms), attentional enhancement of face-selective processing is both earlier and comparatively more modest. Moreover, only the selective neural response for faces appears to be actively suppressed by attending towards an alternate visual category. These results underscore the special status that faces hold within the human visual system, and highlight the utility of visual periodicity as a powerful tool for indexing selective neural processing of multiple visual categories contained within the same image sequence.

Scene context and attention independently facilitate MEG decoding of object category

Abstract:Many of the objects we encounter in our everyday environments would be hard to recognize without any expectations about these objects. For example, a distant silhouette may be perceived as a car because we expect objects of that size, positioned on a road, to be cars. Reflecting the influence of such expectations on visual processing, neuroimaging studies have shown that when objects are poorly visible, expectations derived from scene context facilitate the representations of these objects in visual cortex from around 300 ms after scene onset. The current magnetoencephalography (MEG) study tested whether this facilitation occurs independently of attention and task relevance. Participants viewed degraded objects alone or within their original scene context while they either attended the scenes (attended condition) or the fixation cross (unattended condition), temporally directing attention away from the scenes. Results showed that at 300 ms after stimulus onset, multivariate classifiers trained to distinguish clearly visible animate vs inanimate objects generalized to distinguish degraded objects in scenes better than degraded objects alone, despite the added clutter of the scene background. Attention also modulated object representations at this latency, with better category decoding in the attended than the unattended condition. The modulatory effects of context and attention were independent of each other. Finally, data from the current study and a previous study were combined (N=51) to provide a more detailed temporal characterization of contextual facilitation. These results extend previous work by showing that facilitatory scene-object interactions are independent of the specific task performed on the visual input.

Abstract:Participants selectively attended to one of two flickered picture arrays based on their chromaticity (i.e., colour or greyscale) while ignoring the other array. Steady‐state visual evoked potentials (ssVEPs) at Oz were quantified by means of the Hilbert transform. Across picture categories (colour/grey) attended pictures evoked sustained enhancement of ssVEP amplitudes relative to ignored pictures. Prior work in selective attention research has shown that colour‐selective attention enhances neural activity in visuocortical areas sensitive to the attended colour while suppressing activity in areas sensitive to ignored colours. However, it is currently unclear whether this effect is limited to attending to specific colour hues or extends to chromatic information more broadly. To investigate this question, we used steady‐state visual evoked potentials (ssVEPs) frequency tagging to quantify participants' visuocortical responses to specific elements embedded in arrays of flickering, randomly moving mid‐complex patterns. Participants were instructed to attend to either coloured or greyscale patterns while ignoring the others. We found that attending to either coloured or greyscale patterns produced robust increases in ssVEP amplitudes both compared to ignored stimuli and to baseline. There was however no evidence of suppressed responses to ignored patterns. These findings demonstrate that attentional selection based on the presence or absence of chromatic information prompts selectively enhanced visuocortical processing but this selective amplification is not accompanied by suppression of unattended stimuli. Findings are consistent with theoretical notions that predict strong competition between specific exemplars within a given feature dimension, such as red or green, but weak competition between broadly defined stimulus categories, such as chromatic versus non‐chromatic.

Abstract:The human brain prioritises relevant sensory information to perform different tasks. Enhancement of task-relevant information requires flexible allocation of attentional resources, but it is still a mystery how this is operationalised in the brain. We investigated how attentional mechanisms operate in situations where multiple stimuli are presented in the same location and at the same time. In two experiments, participants performed a challenging two-back task on different types of visual stimuli that were presented simultaneously and superimposed over each other. Using electroencephalography and multivariate decoding, we analysed the effect of attention on the neural responses to each individual stimulus. Whole brain neural responses contained considerable information about both the attended and unattended stimuli, even though they were presented simultaneously and represented in overlapping receptive fields. As expected, attention increased the decodability of stimulus-related information contained in the neural responses, but this effect was evident earlier for stimuli that were presented at smaller sizes. Our results show that early neural responses to stimuli in fast-changing displays contain remarkable information about the sensory environment but are also modulated by attention in a manner dependent on perceptual characteristics of the relevant stimuli. Abstract:Continuously prioritizing behaviourally relevant information from the environment for improved stimulus processing is a crucial function of attention. Low-frequency phase-locking of neural activity (entrainment) in primary sensory areas, with respect to attended/ignored features has been suggested to support top-down prioritization. Entrainment of frontoparietal regions has not been widely studied, despite general implication of these in top-down selection of information. In the current MEG study, we studied how entrained oscillatory activity of both sensory and non-sensory brain regions are differentially impacted upon by attentional focus. Participants performed an established intermodal selective attention task, where low-frequency auditory (1.6 Hz) and visual (1.8 Hz) stimuli were presented simultaneously. We instructed participants to either attend to the auditory or to the visual stimuli and to detect targets while ignoring the other stimulus stream. As expected, the strongest entrainment was observed in primary sensory regions for auditory and for visual stimulation, independent of attentional focus. We found greater differences in entrainment between attended and ignored stimulation for the visual modality. Interestingly, auditory temporal regions show small but significant attention-dependent entrainment even for visual stimulation. Extending findings from invasive recordings in non-human primates, we demonstrate an effect of attentional focus on the phase of the entrained oscillations in auditory and visual cortex. In contrast to the effects in sensory areas, attentional focus adjusted the peak frequencies in nonsensory areas. Spatially these areas show a striking overlap with core regions of the dorsal attention network. This suggests that these areas prioritize the attended modality by optimally exploiting the temporal structure of stimulation. Overall, our study complements and extends previous work by showing a differential effect of attentional focus on entrained oscillations in primary sensory areas and core areas of the dorsal attention network.
