Abstract:We propose a practical secure key generation and distribution (SKGD) scheme for actual application. Based on the experiment results of the polarization properties of the actual optical-fiber link, we propose a SKGD method by the active modulation of the state of polarization of the optical-fiber by two polarization scramblers placed at the local end of the legal users in the point-to-point communication system. Experiment results prove that the signals received by legal users share high correlation using 20 km standard single-mode fiber and 1 KHz polarization scrambling rate, and the bit generation rate can reach to 1216 bit/s with a bit error rate of ∼0.33%. Security of the system is also analyzed in terms of the polarization properties of the system; the theoretical and experimental results indicate that the proposed scheme possesses high security due to the invisibility of the key signal and the technical difficulty of the recovery of the key sequence.

Abstract:Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices are often used to transmit physical sensor data over digital wireless channels. Traditional Physical Layer Security (PLS)-based cryptography approaches rely on accurate channel estimation and information exchange for key generation, which irrevocably ties key quality with digital channel estimation quality. Recently, we proposed a new concept called Graph Layer Security (GLS), where digital keys are derived from physical sensor readings. The sensor readings between legitimate users are correlated through a common background infrastructure environment (e.g., a common water distribution network or electric grid). The challenge for GLS has been how to achieve distributed key generation. This paper presents a Federated multi-agent Deep reinforcement learning-assisted Distributed Key generation scheme (FD2K), which fully exploits the common features of physical dynamics to establish secret key between legitimate users. We present for the first time initial experimental results of GLS with federated learning, achieving considerable security performance in terms of key agreement rate (KAR), and key randomness.

Abstract:The information security plays a significant role in both our daily life and national security. As the traditional algorithm-based secure key distribution (SKD) is challenged by the quantum computers, the optical physical-layer SKD has attracted great attentions such as quantum SKD, chaos SKD, and reciprocity-based SKD. However, the cost of quantum SKD is still unaffordable and the latter two classical SKDs are only reliable with some preshared information or under simple eavesdrop. So far, there still lacks a high-security and low-cost optical SKD scheme. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a high-security chip-encoded classical optical SKD paradigm based on the reciprocity of incoherent matrix. The security of SKD is facilitated by the incoherence of input light, and it is the first time that the classical optical SKD is achieved with silicon photonic chips and commercial optical fiber link. Experimentally, we set up a chip-to-chip communication link and achieve key generation rate of 100 bit/s over a 40 km single mode fiber, with key error rate of only 1.89 %. Moreover, we demonstrate the key capacity expansion of the proposed scheme with four-channel wavelength division multiplexing. Our proposal paves the way for the low-cost, high-security, and miniaturized optical SKD.

Abstract:Physical-layer key generation (PKG) establishes cryptographic keys from highly correlated measurements of wireless channels, which relies on reciprocal channel characteristics between uplink and downlink, is a promising wireless security technique for Internet of Things (IoT). However, it is challenging to extract common features in frequency-division duplexing (FDD) systems as uplink and downlink transmissions operate at different frequency bands whose channel frequency responses are not reciprocal anymore. Existing PKG methods for FDD systems have many limitations, i.e., high overhead and security problems. This article proposes a novel PKG scheme that uses the feature mapping function between different frequency bands obtained by deep learning to make two users generate highly similar channel features in FDD systems. In particular, this is the first time to apply deep learning for PKG in FDD systems. We first prove the existence of the band feature mapping function for a given environment and a feedforward network with a single hidden layer can approximate the mapping function. Then, a key generation neural network (KGNet) is proposed for reciprocal channel feature construction, and a key generation scheme based on the KGNet is also proposed. Numerical results verify the excellent performance of the KGNet-based key generation scheme in terms of randomness, key generation ratio, and key error rate. Besides, the overhead analysis shows that the method proposed in this article can be used for resource-constrained IoT devices in FDD systems.

Abstract:The secure key generation and distribution (SKGD) are unprecedentedly important for a modern secure communication system. This paper proposes what we believe to be a novel scheme of high-speed key distribution based on interference spectrum-shift keying with signal mutual modulation in commonly driven chaos synchronization. In this scheme, delay line interferometers (DLI) are utilized to generate two low-correlation interference spectra from commonly driven synchronous chaos, and then a 2 × 2 optical switch can effectively change the relationship between the two interference spectra in post-processing by shifting the states of the switch. The signals then undergo electro-optic nonlinear transformation through a hardware module, which includes a signal mutually modulating module (SMMM) and a dispersion component. This optimization significantly enhances the entropy source rate of synchronized chaos from both legitimate users. Moreover, thanks to the introduction of DLIs and electro-optic nonlinear transformation module, the key space of the proposed scheme is remarkably improved. In comparison to traditional chaotic drive-response architectures, the scheme effectively suppresses residual correlation. A 6.7 Gbit/s key distribution rate with a bit error rate below 3.8 × 10-3 is experimentally demonstrated over a 40 km single-mode fiber (SMF).

Abstract:In this letter, a novel cross physical layer (PHY)/medium access control (MAC) layer security scheme is proposed, where PHY key generated based on channel information is introduced into the random access procedure to protect the security of wireless communications from the very outset. To ensure the accessing rate of legal user, high key generation rate (KGR) and low key disagreement rate (KDR) are critical. We first utilize instantaneous channel information of demodulation reference signal to rapidly generate key without frequently information exchanging in PHY. Then, to reduce the inconsistency of the generated PHY key caused by high-frequency noise, discrete wavelet transform is used to decrease the KDR. Furthermore, the theoretical KGR upper bound of the proposed scheme is derived from the aspect of information theory. Finally, the proposed scheme is verified in OpenAirInterface platform. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme has the high accessing rate of legal user and low-delay, which effectively protects the random access procedure from unauthorized user.

Fast and Scalable Secret Key Generation Exploiting Channel Phase Randomness in Wireless Networks

Abstract:Recently, there has been great interest in physical layer security techniques that exploit the randomness of wireless channels for securely extracting cryptographic keys. Several interesting approaches have been developed and demonstrated for their feasibility. The state-of-the-art, however, still has much room for improving their practicality. This is because i) the key bit generation rate supported by most existing approaches is very low which significantly limits their practical usage given the intermittent connectivity in mobile environments; ii) existing approaches suffer from the scalability and flexibility issues, i.e., they cannot be directly extended to support efficient group key generation and do not suit for static environments. With these observations in mind, we present a new secret key generation approach that utilizes the uniformly distributed phase information of channel responses to extract shared cryptographic keys under narrowband multipath fading models. The proposed approach enjoys a high key bit generation rate due to its efficient introduction of multiple randomized phase information within a single coherence time interval as the keying sources. The proposed approach also provides scalability and flexibility because it relies only on the transmission of periodical extensions of unmodulated sinusoidal beacons, which allows effective accumulation of channel phases across multiple nodes. The proposed scheme is thoroughly evaluated through both analytical and simulation studies. Compared to existing work that focus on pairwise key generation, our approach is highly scalable and can improve the analytical key bit generation rate by a couple of orders of magnitude.

Abstract:Physical layer secret key generation (PLKG) is a new research area that has emerged in recent years. It is aimed at scenarios where legitimate IoT devices communicate directly, interacting with confidential information for lower overhead and higher security by using wireless channel. When applying it to wireless feature extraction, noise removal is not taken into account in current deep learning networks. To address these problems, the PLKG scheme based on bidirectional convergence feature learning convolutional network (BCFL-based scheme) is proposed, which consists of neural network called BCFL and a new quantization method to achieve better secret key generation. Unlike existing PLKG schemes that enabling both parties to communicate for obtaining higher channel feature similarities, when training it, channel state information (CSI) obtained by channel estimation for two legitimate devices during coherent time is used as inputs; and mean square error (MSE) between two outputs is used as result of loss function for iterative training. Thus, it can obtain better denoising ability with guaranteed low computational resource consumption, and two legitimate devices can obtain highly correlated channel features. Multiple quantization method is also proposed to address low secret key generation rate (KGR) and low secret key randomness (KR). The results show that the proposed BCFL-based scheme has a lower MSE than other schemes in different scenarios, indicating that it has better capability to learn channel reciprocity; and secret key error rate (KER) and time consumption are only about 50% of other schemes, which is a significant performance improvement.

Abstract:Using the physical layer channel information of wireless devices to establish the highly consistent secret keys is a promising technology for improving the security of wireless networks. Nevertheless, in the time division duplex system, the reciprocity of the wireless channel that is the basic principle of key generation is impaired by nonsimultaneous sampling and noise factors. Existing physical layer key generation approaches rely on hand-crafted feature extraction algorithms, which have high overhead or security issues and are impractical in real-world situations. This paper presents a novel physical layer key generation method to extract highly consistent keys from imperfect channel responses, which exploits channel reciprocity through deep learning. Specifically, we first design the Channel Reciprocity Learning Net (CRLNet), a neural network for efficiently learning channel reciprocity features from the wireless channel in TDD OFDM systems. Later, a new key generation scheme based on CRLNet is developed that can achieve a high key agreement rate. Experiments indicate that the CRLNet-based key generation scheme performs excellently in terms of key generation rate, key error rate, and randomness, confirming that our method has better performance and lower overhead than existing methods.

Abstract:Security key is necessary for data encryption while transmitting amounts of confidential information. For existing strategies of key distribution, it is the primary challenge that the rate and distance limit, insufficient security, and difficulty of deployment. To solve these problems, we propose an accelerated key distribution method for endogenously secure optical communication by synchronized chaotic system based on BER feature of fiber channel. First, synchronized chaotic equation systems are innovatively realized by identical hardware equipment, chaotic equation, initial value, and micro interference. Then, the synchronization keeping with micro interference of proposed chaotic systems are obtained based on identical BER feature of fiber loop. Innovatively, all synchronous operation controls to proposed chaotic systems are guaranteed by deterministic rule of algorithm operation, and are not limited by amplifier or fiber length. Experimental result demonstrates that proposed chaotic systems are synchronized under long term operation. The key distribution rate (KDR) can reach a rate of 100Gbit/s at 100% key consistency rate. And, the KDR can be augmented by extending hardware resources of key distribution. Simulation is conducted to illustrate the security of chaotic systems by the bifurcation diagram, scatter plot diagram, and initial value sensitive phenomenon. NIST security test suite demonstrates that generated secret key sequences pass the test. Moreover, possible attacks are analysed for the security robustness of proposed scheme. The results illustrate proposed system is a reliable, secure and cost-effective solution for highspeed and long-haul key distribution.

Abstract:Physical-layer secret key generation (PSKG) stands as a promising privacy protection technique, establishing shared encryption keys through the analysis of highly correlated wireless channel measurements. This approach relies on exploiting reciprocal channel characteristics between uplink and downlink transmissions. Nonetheless, the distinct carrier frequencies employed for uplink and downlink in frequency-division duplexing (FDD) systems pose a challenge in identifying common features. This paper presents a novel approach that exploits the inherent reciprocity between scattering parameters of passive two-port networks within same frequency ranges to overcome this obstacle. By capitalizing this reciprocity and considering closely situated FDD bands, a seamless continuity is anticipated in phase differences extracted form the corresponding S-parameters, between neighboring antennas of an antenna array from both uplink and downlink directions. This continuity, thereby ensures consistency in the generated keys from both transmission ends. Furthermore, a two-stage pre-processing method is proposed to enhance performance effectively. Additionally, the paper suggests the utilization of polynomial curve-fitting through measurement data to improve reciprocity and proposes a non-linear framework for quantizing the merging points of the two FDD bands. A statistical analysis employing multiple linear regression is provided to determine the error probability associated with the generated keys. Empirical results validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed key generation scheme, affirming its attributes in terms of randomness, efficiency, key distribution uniformity, and key disagreement ratio (KDR).

Abstract:Physical layer security (PLS) is a promising technology in device-to-device (D2D) communications by exploiting reciprocity and randomness of wireless channels, which attracts considerable research attention in the D2D communications community. In this paper, we investigated PLS for secure key generation rate (SKGR) in D2D communications based on cooperative trusted and non-trusted relays. By leveraging social ties, we exploit three social phenomena for secure communications, i.e., trusted scenario (social trust), non-trusted scenario (social reciprocity), and partially trusted scenario (mixed social trust and social reciprocity). The coalition game theory is further utilized to select the optimal relay pairs for improving SKGR. On the basis of social ties, we develop an algorithm for SKGR that protects the keys secret from both eavesdropper and non-trusted selected relays. We incorporate secure relays selection and system wide security for D2D communications. The stability and convergence of the proposed algorithm are also proved in this paper. Both numerical and analytical results verify effectiveness and consistency of our proposed scheme, which ensures better SKGR performance in D2D communications.

Abstract:This paper explores physical layer group key generation in wireless relay networks with a star topology. In this setup, the relay node plays the role of either a trusted or untrusted central node, while one legitimate node (Alice) acts as the reference node. The channel between the relay and Alice serves as the reference channel. To enhance security during the channel measurement stage, a cooperative jamming-based scheme is proposed in this paper. This scheme allows the relay to obtain superimposed channel observations from both the reference channel and other relay channels. Then, a public discussion is utilized to enable all nodes to obtain estimates of the reference channel. Subsequently, the legitimate nodes can agree on a secret key (SK) that remains secret from the eavesdropper (Eve), or a private key (PK) that needs to be secret from both the relay and Eve. This paper also derives the lower and upper bounds of the SK/PK capacity. Notably, it demonstrates that there exists only a small constant difference between the SK/PK upper and lower bounds in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed scheme for ensuring security and efficiency of group key generation.

Random Matrix based Physical Layer Secret Key Generation in Static Channels

Abstract:Physical layer secret key generation exploits the reciprocal channel randomness for key generation and has proven to be an effective addition security layer in wireless communications. However, static or scarcely random channels require artificially induced dynamics to improve the secrecy performance, e.g., using intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). One key challenge is that the induced random phase from IRS is also reflected in the direction to eavesdroppers (Eve). This leakage enables Eve nodes to estimate the legitimate channels and secret key via a globally known pilot sequence. To mitigate the secret key leakage issue, we propose to exploit random matrix theory to inform the design of a new physical layer secret key generation (PL-SKG) algorithm. We prove that, when sending appropriate random Gaussian matrices, the singular values of Alice's and Bob's received signals follow a similar probability distribution. Leveraging these common singular values, we propose a random Gaussian matrix based PL-SKG (RGM PL-SKG), which avoids the usages of the globally known pilot and thereby prevents the aforementioned leakage issue. Our results show the following: (i) high noise resistance which leads to superior secret key rate (SKR) improvement (up to 300%) in low SNR regime, and (ii) general improved SKR performance against multiple colluded Eves. We believe our combination of random matrix theory and PL-SKG shows a new paradigm to secure the wireless communication channels.

Abstract:Exploiting the inherent physical properties of wireless channels to complement or enhance the traditional security mechanisms has attracted prominent attention recently. However, the existing secret key generation schemes suffer from miscellaneous extracting procedure. Many PHY-layer authentication schemes assume that the knowledge of the shared key is preknown. In this paper, we propose PHY-layer secret key generation and authentication schemes for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In the secret key generation scheme, to simplify the extracting procedure, only one legitimate party is chosen to probe the channel and quantize the measurements to obtain the preliminary key. The preliminary key is masked by the channel-phase after the mapping and before equalization and distributed to the other party. The final shared key is used for the PHY-layer authentication scheme in which random signals and the shared key masked by the channel-phase are exchanged at the PHY-layer. Then, a binary hypothesis test is formulated for authentication. Simulation results show that the proposed secret key generation scheme outperforms the existing schemes. For the PHY-layer authentication scheme, it is immune to various passive and active attacks and a high successful authentication rate is acquired even at low signal-to-noise ratio region.

Abstract:This paper inquires the achievement of secret key generation (SKG) in device-to-device (D2D) communications with the aid of relay. The confidential information between D2D users is taken under the consideration of physical layer secret key generation scheme with the help of colluding or non-colluding relay node. The selected relay conforms to help in the generation of secret keys to keep the information confidential from eavesdropping. In order to ensure the information confidential between D2D users, we explicate a mechanism for selecting relay node based on two basic social phenomena for the selection of relay node. The non-colluding relay selection is considered under the scenario of social trust, while colluding relay selection is based on social reciprocity. Furthermore, we utilize coalition game theory for the selection of optimal relay node in order to improve secret key generation rate (SKGR). Particularly, to attain more eminent SKGR within channel coherence time, the coalition game approach is determined to select an optimal node for relaying by D2D users. On the basis of relay selection, social phenomena, and coalition game theory, we propose an algorithm for achieving higher SKGR. The generated keys are not only protected from eavesdropper but also from the selected (colluding or non-colluding) relay. The performance of our proposed scheme validates and guarantees information confidentiality in D2D communications.

Abstract:Physical layer security (PLS) is superior to classical cryptography techniques due to its notion of perfect secrecy and independence to an eavesdropper's computational power. One form of PLS arises when Alice and Bob (the legitimate users) exchange signals to extract a common key from the random common channels. The drawback of extracting keys from wireless channels is the ample dependence on the dynamicity and fluctuations of the radio channel. However, some radio channels are constant such as line of sight (LoS) and can be estimated by Eve (an illegitimate user), or can be quite static in behaviour due to the presence low-mobility users thus restricting the amount of randomness. This in turn lowers the secret key rate (SKR) defined as the number of bits of key generated per channel use. In this work, we aim to address this challenge by using a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to produce random phases at certain carefully curated intervals such that it disrupts the channel in low entropy environments. We propose an RIS assisted key generation method, study its performance, and compare with benchmarks to observe the benefit of using an RIS while considering various important metrics such as key mismatch rate and average secret key throughput. Simulations are made to validate our theoretical findings showing an improvement in performance when an RIS is deployed.
