Abstract:The trailing hemisphere of Dione is characterized by the Wispy Terrain, where it exhibits a hemispheric-scale network of extensional tectonic faults superposed on the moon's cratered surface. The faults likely reflect past endogenic activity and Dione's interior thermal history. Although fresh exposures of pristine scarps indicate that the timing of the faulting is relatively recent, the absolute age of the faulting remains uncertain. To estimate the timing of the faulting, we investigated stratigraphic relationships between impact craters and faults. Using high-resolution images obtained by ISS cameras onboard the Cassini spacecraft, we investigated craters with diameters exceeding or equal to 10 km that coincide spatially with the faults, and classified the craters as crosscut craters or superposed craters. As a result, at least 82% of the craters were interpreted as clear examples of crosscut craters and 12% of the craters were interpreted to be candidates of superposed craters, although stratigraphic relationships are often ambiguous. The paucity of superposed craters and a predicted cratering rate indicate that the faulting of the Wispy Terrain is 0.30-0.79 Ga. If 12-18% of the craters are assumed to be superposed, the timing of the faulting could be in the range 0.30-0.79 Ga. However, it is possible that the faulting of the Wispy Terrain is still ongoing.

Abstract:During its mission in the Saturn system, Cassini performed five close flybys of Dione. During three of them, radio tracking data were collected during the closest approach, allowing estimation of the full degree-2 gravity field by precise spacecraft orbit determination. The gravity field of Dione is dominated by $J_{2}$ and $C_{22}$, for which our best estimates are $J_{2} \times 10^6 = 1496 \pm 11$ and $C_{22} \times 10^6 = 364.8 \pm 1.8$ (unnormalized coefficients, 1-$\sigma$ uncertainty). Their ratio is $J_{2}/C_{22} = 4.102 \pm 0.044$, showing a significative departure (about 17-$\sigma$) from the theoretical value of $10/3$, predicted for a relaxed body in slow, synchronous rotation around a planet. Therefore, it is not possible to retrieve the moment of inertia directly from the measured gravitational field. The interior structure of Dione is investigated by a combined analysis of its gravity and topography, which exhibits an even larger deviation from hydrostatic equilibrium, suggesting some degree of compensation. The gravity of Dione is far from the expectation for an undifferentiated hydrostatic body, so we built a series of three-layer models, and considered both Airy and Pratt compensation mechanisms. The interpretation is non-unique, but Dione's excess topography may suggest some degree of Airy-type isostasy, meaning that the outer ice shell is underlain by a higher density, lower viscosity layer, such as a subsurface liquid water ocean. The data permit a broad range of possibilities, but the best fitting models tend towards large shell thicknesses and small ocean thicknesses.

Abstract:The crystalline state of water ice in the Solar System depends on the temperature history of the ice and the influence of energetic particles to which it has been exposed. We measured the infrared absorption spectra of amorphous and crystalline water ice in the 10-50 K and 10-140 K temperature range, respectively, and conducted a systematic experimental study to investigate the amorphization of crystalline water ice via ionizing radiation irradiation at doses of up to 160 \pm 30 eV per molecule. We found that crystalline water ice can be converted only partially to amorphous ice by electron irradiation. The experiments showed that a fraction of the 1.65 \mum band, which is characteristic for crystalline water ice, survived the irradiation, to a degree that strongly depends on the temperature. Quantitative kinetic fits of the temporal evolution of the 1.65 \mum band clearly demonstrate that there is a balance between thermal recrystallization and irradiation-induced amorphization, with thermal recrystallizaton dominant at higher temperatures. Our experiments show the amorphization at 40K was incomplete, in contradiction to Mastrapa and Brown's conclusion (Icarus 2006, 183, 207.). At 50 K, the recrystallization due to thermal effects is strong, and most of the crystalline ice survived. Temperatures of most icy objects in the Solar System, including Jovian satellites, Saturnian satellites (including Titan), and Kuiper Belt Objects, are equal to or above 50 K; this explains why water ice detected on those objects is mostly crystalline.

Abstract:Enceladus is a primary target for astrobiology due to the $\rm H_2O$ plume ejecta measured by the Cassini spacecraft and the inferred subsurface ocean sustained by tidal heating. Sourcing the plumes via a direct connection from the ocean to the surface requires a fracture through the entire ice shell ($\sim$10 km). Here we explore an alternative mechanism in which shear heating within shallower tiger stripe fractures produces partial melting in the ice shell and interstitial convection allows fluid to be ejected as geysers. We use an idealized two-dimensional multiphase reactive transport model to simulate the thermomechanics of a mushy region generated by an upper bound estimate for the localized shear heating rate in a salty ice shell. From our simulations, we predict the temperature, porosity, salt content, melting rate, and liquid volume of an intrashell mushy zone surrounding a fracture. We find that the rate of internal melting can match the observed $\rm H_2O$ eruption rate and that there is sufficient brine volume within the mushy zone to sustain the geysers for $\sim350$ kyr without additional melting. The composition of the liquid brine is, however, distinct from that of the ocean, due to partial melting. This shear heating mechanism for geyser formation applies to Enceladus and other icy moons and has implications for our understanding of the geophysical processes and astrobiological potential of icy satellites.

Rayed craters on Dione: Implication for the dominant surface alteration process

Abstract:From recently-acquired, high-resolution images obtained by the Cassini spacecraft, we examine the patterns and spatial distributions of rayed craters on Dione. We identify 29 rayed craters with diameters larger than 2km on Dione's surface. The density of rayed craters and theoretical cratering rates indicate that the retention time for rays on Dione can be approximately 1-50 My. Such a short retention time is interpreted to be due to bombardment of plasma and E-ring particles, as well as implantation of dark particles (presumably the same dark material found on Hyperion, Iapetus, and other saturnian satellites). We also find that when the ray system of Creusa crater was formed, it extended over most of the surface of Dione. Later, the ray system deposited on the trailing hemisphere might have been partially erased, mostly due to implantation of dark particles, which may have also removed other bright ray systems in that region. The pattern of Creusa's ray system implies that the implantation of the dark material occurred more recent than both the age of Creusa crater and the typical retention time for rays on Dione.

Abstract:Ceres is a key object in understanding the evolution of small bodies and is the only dwarf planet to have been orbited by a spacecraft, NASA's Dawn mission. Dawn data paint an inconclusive picture of Ceres' internal structure, composition and evolutionary pathway: crater morphology and gravity inversions suggest an ice-rich interior, while a lack of extensive crater relaxation argues for low ice content. Here we resolve this discrepancy by applying an ice rheology that includes effects of impurities on grain boundary sliding to finite element method simulations of Cerean craters. We show that Ceres can maintain its cratered topography while also having an ice-rich crust. Our simulations show that a crust with ~90% ice near the surface, which gradually decreases to 0% at 117 km depth, simultaneously matches the observed lack of crater relaxation, observed crater morphology and gravity inversions. This crustal structure results from a frozen ocean that became more impurity rich as it solidified top-down. Therefore, the Dawn data are consistent with an icy Ceres that evolved through freezing of an ancient, impure ocean.

Abstract:Over the south pole of Enceladus, an icy moon of Saturn, geysers eject water into space in a striped pattern, making Enceladus one of the most attractive destinations in the search for extraterrestrial life. We explore the ocean dynamics and tracer/heat transport associated with geysers as a function of the assumed salinity of the ocean and various core-shell heat partitions and bottom heating patterns. We find that, even if heating is concentrated into a narrow band on the seafloor directly beneath the south pole, the warm fluid becomes quickly mixed with its surroundings due to baroclinic instability. The warming signal beneath the ice is diffuse and insufficient to prevent the geyser from freezing over. Instead, if heating is assumed to be local to the geyser, emanating from tidal dissipation in the ice itself, the geyser can be sustained. In this case, the upper ocean beneath the ice becomes stably stratified and thus a barrier to vertical communication, leading to transit timescales from the core to the ice shell of hundreds of years.

Abstract:Surface modification on Jupiter's volcanically active moon, Io, has to date been attributed almost exclusively to lava emplacement and volcanic plume deposits. Here we demonstrate that wind-blown transport of sediment may also be altering the Ionian surface. Specifically, shallow subsurface interactions between lava and Io's widespread sulfur dioxide (SO$_2$) frost can produce localized sublimation vapor flows with sufficient gas densities to enable particle saltation. We calculate anticipated outgassing velocities from lava-SO$_2$ frost interactions, and compare these to the saltation thresholds predicted when accounting for the tenuous nature of the sublimated vapor. We find that saltation may occur if frost temperatures surpass 155 K. Finally we make the first measurements of the dimensions of linear features in images from the Galileo probe, previously termed "ridges", which demonstrate certain similarities to dunes on other planetary bodies. Io joins a growing list of bodies with tenuous and transient atmospheres where aeolian sediment transport may be an important control on the landscape.
Dome Craters on Ganymede and Callisto May Form by Topographic Relaxation of Pit Craters Aided by Remnant Impact Heat

Abstract:The icy Galilean satellites display impact crater morphologies that are rare in the Solar System. They deviate from the archetypal sequence of crater morphologies as a function of size found on rocky bodies and other icy satellites: they exhibit central pits in place of peaks, followed by central dome craters, anomalous dome craters, penepalimpsests, palimpsests, and multi-ring structures. Understanding the origin of these features will provide insight into the geophysical factors that operate within the icy Galilean satellites. Pit craters above a size threshold feature domes. This trend, and the similarity in morphology between the two classes, suggest a genetic link between pit and dome craters. We propose that dome craters evolve from pit craters through topographic relaxation, facilitated by remnant heat from the impact. Our finite element simulations show that, for the specific crater sizes where we see domes on Ganymede and Callisto, domes form from pit craters within 10 Myr. Topographic relaxation eliminates the stresses induced by crater topography and restores a flat surface: ice flows downwards from the rim and upwards from the crater depression driven by gravity. When the starting topography is a pit crater, the heat left over from the impact is concentrated below the pit. Since warm ice flows more rapidly, the upward flow is enhanced beneath the pit, leading to the emergence of a dome. Given the timescales and the dependence on heat flux, this model could be used to constrain the thermal history and evolution of these moons.

Abstract:Mimas has a high eccentricity and an anomalously high physical libration like its neighbor, Enceladus, but does not appear to have a geologically active surface. We investigate Mimas' interior with a technique that infers spatial variations in tidal heating from its global shape. To account for its hydrostatic shape, we find Mimas' normalized moment of inertia is 0.375 ± 0.0025, indicating a relatively undifferentiated world. Its remaining topography is consistent with a ∼30 km thick conductive ice shell in Airy isostasy atop a weakly convecting ∼30 km thick layer that itself mantles a ∼140 km radius ice‐rock interior. The convective shell's density must be closer to the interior density to satisfy our moment of inertia and provide a denser compensating layer for Airy isostasy. This ice‐rock interior is elongated along the Mimas‐Saturn axis, which can match Mimas' observed physical libration without appealing to an ocean. The inferred ice shell thickness variations indicate a high obliquity (≈1.7°). We suggest that the obliquity damped rapidly, after which topography froze in when internal heat was conducted out of Mimas quicker than isostatic ice shell thickness variations could relax. We speculate on several possible explanations for this transient high obliquity, including excitation by ring‐forming material following the recent tidal disruption of an eccentric satellite. We cannot rule out a young Mimantean ocean, but our inferred moment of inertia favors a Mimas that was solid when it experienced a period of high obliquity, did not significantly melt during a recent resonance with Enceladus, and is solid today.

Europa's Surface Water-ice Crystallinity and Correlations between Lineae and Hydrate Composition

Abstract:Europa's surface composition and evidence for cryovolcanic activity can provide insight into the properties and composition of the subsurface ocean, allowing the evaluation of its potential habitability. One promising avenue for revealing the surface processing and subsurface activity are the relative fractions of crystalline and amorphous water-ice observed on the surface, which are influenced by temperature, charged particle bombardment, vapor deposition, and cryovolcanic activity. The crystallinity observed on Europa's leading hemisphere cannot be reproduced by thermophysical and particle flux modeling alone, indicating that there may be additional processes influencing the surface. We performed a spectral mixture analysis on hyperspectral image cubes from the Galileo Near-Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS) to identify how surface crystallinity is influenced by physical processing at a high spatial resolution scale. We focus specifically on two image cubes, 15e015 closer to the equator and 17e009 closer to the south pole, both on the leading hemisphere. We performed a nonnegative least-squares spectral mixture analysis to reveal both the non-ice composition and the water-ice crystallinity of the surface. We found that amorphous water-ice dominates the spectrum at the equator and the south pole. We estimated a mean crystallinity of ~35% within the 15e015 NIMS cube and a mean crystallinity of ~15% within the 17e009 NIMS cube, which is consistent with ground-based spectroscopically derived crystallinities. We also identified a correlation of magnesium sulfate, magnesium chloride, and hydrated sulfuric acid with lineae and ridges, which may provide evidence for surface processing by upwelling subsurface material.

Abstract:There is considerable interest in sending a mission to Enceladus to sample its erupting materials, which are sourced from its ocean, a proposed habitable environment. However, we lack resolution between competing ascent and eruption models, which offer differing consequences and challenges for mission sampling and access strategies. We report a new Enceladus ascent and eruption model, "Cryo‐Erupt," where ascent from ocean to jet is driven by the exsolution and expansion of dissolved gases from ascending water within conduits. This mechanism shares many similarities with some forms of terrestrial activity, including explosive silicate volcanism, cold‐water geysers and "limnic" eruptions. This preliminary study suggests that this mode of ascent and eruption is viable and broadly consistent with a range of observations including the apparent co‐existence of point‐ (jet) and fissure‐ (curtain) sourced activity as well as strong contrasts in velocity and ice‐to‐vapor ratio between the plume and the jets feeding it. However, it requires the co‐existence of a sublimation plume as an additive component to the broader plume. The outcomes of the Cryo‐Erupt model differ in terms of conduit physical and chemical processes from previously proposed boiling interface eruption models, for example, predicting larger dynamic pressures and narrower conduits, which could present challenges for direct robotic access. Due to the lack of a static boiling interface or wall condensation, bulk composition is unlikely to change appreciably during ascent from the ocean‐conduit interface to the jet, potentially simplifying the interpretation of samples collected in space or on Enceladus' surface.

A 1-D evolutionary model for icy satellites, applied to Enceladus

Abstract:We develop a long-term 1-D evolution model for icy satellites that couples multiple processes: water migration and differentiation, geochemical reactions and silicate phase transitions, compaction by self-gravity, and ablation. The model further considers the following energy sources and sinks: tidal heating, radiogenic heating, geochemical energy released by serpentinization or absorbed by mineral dehydration, gravitational energy and insolation, and heat transport by conduction, convection, and advection. We apply the model to Enceladus, by guessing the initial conditions that would render a structure compatible with present-day observations, assuming the initial structure to have been homogeneous. Assuming the satellite has been losing water continually along its evolution, we postulate that it was formed as a more massive, more icy and more porous satellite, and gradually transformed into its present day state due to sustained long-term tidal heating. We consider several initial compositions and evolution scenarios and follow the evolution for the age of the Solar System, testing the present day model results against the available observational constraints. Our model shows the present configuration to be differentiated into a pure icy mantle, several tens of km thick, overlying a rocky core, composed of dehydrated rock at the center and hydrated rock in the outer part. For Enceladus, it predicts a higher rock/ice mass ratio than previously assumed and a thinner ice mantle, compatible with recent estimates based on gravity field measurements. Although, obviously, the model cannot be used to explain local phenomena, it sheds light on the internal structure invoked in explanations of localized features and activities.

Abstract:Tidal heating on Io due to its finite eccentricity was predicted to drive surface volcanic activity, which was subsequently confirmed by the Voyager spacecraft. Although the volcanic activity in Io is more complex, in theory volcanism can be driven by runaway melting in which the tidal heating increases as the mantle thickness decreases. We show that this runaway melting mechanism is generic for a composite planetary body with liquid core and solid mantle, provided that (i) the mantle rigidity, μ, is comparable to the central pressure, i.e., μ/(ρ gR P ) ≳ 0.1 for a body with density ρ, surface gravitational acceleration g, and radius R P ; (ii) the surface is not molten; (iii) tides deposit sufficient energy; and (iv) the planet has nonzero eccentricity. We calculate the approximate liquid core radius as a function of μ/(ρ gR P ), and find that more than 90% of the core will melt due to this runaway for μ/(ρ gR P ) ≳ 1. From all currently confirmed exoplanets, we find that the terrestrial planets in the L 98-59 system are the most promising candidates for sustaining active volcanism. However, uncertainties regarding the quality factors and the details of tidal heating and cooling mechanisms prohibit definitive claims of volcanism on any of these planets. We generate synthetic transmission spectra of these planets assuming Venus-like atmospheric compositions with an additional 5%, 50%, and 98% SO 2 component, which is a tracer of volcanic activity. We find a ≳3σ preference for a model with SO 2 with 5–10 transits with JWST for L 98-59bcd.

Abstract:The thermo-mechanical evolution of icy moons cannot be understood without taking into account the complex interaction between the solid ice crust and the liquid water ocean. This interaction is controlled by the heat flux from the ocean and the material properties of ice. In recent years, the mass and energy exchange between the crust and the ocean has been studied using two complementary approaches. While in the first approach, the heat flux from the ocean is governed by the internal dynamics of the ocean and is independent of the processes at the phase boundary, the other approach assumes that the heat flux from the ocean is controlled by variations in the melting temperature along the boundary and the role of the ocean in heat transfer is passive. Here we present a new method for modeling the heat transfer in the interior of icy moons. Our approach is based on solving the heat transfer equations simultaneously in the ice shell and the ocean, and is more general than the previous ones in that it consistently links the global ocean circulation with the melting temperature variations arising from the deformation of the ice-water phase boundary. The method is used to study the role of ocean circulation in the formation of surface and ice-water interface topographies. We show that the additional heat flux generated by variations in the melting temperature along the phase boundary counteracts the heat flux from the deep ocean but is not able to completely suppress it. The deep ocean heat flux is more reduced at high latitudes than near the equator, where the ocean circulation is dominated by strong zonal flows hampering the heat transfer in the meridional direction. Our simulations predict the shape and topography that are comparable in magnitude to those observed on Titan ( ∼ 500 m) and explain the absence of a degree-2 sectoral component in the spherical harmonic expansion of Titan’s topography.

Abstract:In the 2 March 1979 issue of Science 203 S. J. Peale, P. Cassen and R. T. Reynolds published their paper "Melting of Io by tidal dissipation" indicating "the dissipation of tidal energy in Jupiter's moon Io is likely to have melted a major fraction of the mass." The conclusion of their paper was that "consequences of a largely molten interior may be evident in pictures of Io's surface returned by Voyager 1." Just three days after that, the Voyager 1 spacecraft would pass within 0.3 Jupiter radii of Io. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory navigation team's orbit estimation program as well as the team members themselves performed flawlessly. In regards to the optical navigation component image extraction of satellite centers in Voyager pictures taken for optical navigation at Jupiter rms post fit residuals were less than 0.25 pixels. The cognizant engineer of the Optical Navigation Image Processing System was astronomer Linda Morabito. Four days after the Voyager 1 encounter with Jupiter, after preforming image processing on a picture of Io taken by the spacecraft the day before, something anomalous emerged off the limb of Io. This historical review written by the discoverer recounts her minute-by-minute quest to identify what was a volcanic plume, the first evidence of active volcanism seen beyond Earth. Many ingredients of the account reflect historic themes in the process of scientific discovery.
Cassini finds molecular hydrogen in the Enceladus plume: Evidence for hydrothermal processes

Abstract:Hydrothermal processes on Enceladus Saturn's moon Enceladus has a subsurface ocean covered by a layer of ice. Some liquid escapes into space through cracks in the ice, which is the source of one of Saturn's rings. In October 2015, the Cassini spacecraft flew directly through the plume of escaping material and sampled its chemical composition. Waite et al. found that the plume contains molecular hydrogen, H 2 , a sign that the water in Enceladus' ocean is reacting with rocks through hydrothermal processes (see the Perspective by Seewald). This drives the ocean out of chemical equilibrium, in a similar way to water around Earth's hydrothermal vents, potentially providing a source of chemical energy. Abstract:New models challenge the long-standing conclusion about Mimas, an icy satellite of Saturn, being an inactive snowball, suggesting the existence of a young stealth ocean. Unfortunately, no observable evidence has been found yet implying tectonic activity and the theoretical subsurface ocean. Here, we present the first structural geological map of the icy satellite, with the signs of various tectonic features, along with a simple crosscutting chronology of lineaments formation. In accordance with the supposedly young age of the stealth ocean, the observed phenomena are described as putative lineaments, ridges, and troughs. Simple tectonic features are identified as young compared to complex structures. The pattern of the linear features seems to overlap with the allocation of various modeled global nonlinear tidal dissipation patterns. In such a way, it may provide the first observed evidence for the existence of the theoretical subsurface stealth ocean. However, the overlapping and crosscutting relation between craters and the observed features may raise concerns about the recent formation of such linear features, indicating possibly long-time dormant or already stopped tectonic processes at the early embryonic phase of lineament formation billions of years ago.

Abstract:Titan's surface was revealed by Cassini's instruments, showing the presence of liquid hydrocarbons in lakes, and features like dry riverbed. In order to study the sediment transport in Titan's channels and to map distribution of the water-ice signature in these terrains, we use a radiative transfer model to retrieve the surface albedo, after we estimated VIMS error via an original method. We also establish a criteria related to the intensity of the water ice signature. The tuning of the radiative transfer model shows that the fractal dimension of Titan's aerosols is higher than previously thought, around 2.3 - 2.4. We find spots of increasing signal of water ice downstream, at the margins of Tui Regio, that could correspond to alluvial fans, deltas or crater rims. We also observe a very low water ice signal on Tui Regio, with a positive gradient between the central region and the boundary of the area, possibly due to the thickness variation of an evaporitic layer. The riverbeds show within the error bars a decreasing grain size from the top to the bottom of the channels.
