Abstract:The crustal low-velocity zone (LVZ), an important anomaly found in some regional structures of Iceland, is still absent in the Icelandic average velocity structure due to limitations of tomography methods. Using stations from the HOTSPOT experiment and other supplemental stations throughout Iceland, we apply the frequency-Bessel transform method (F-J method) to extract the first two mode dispersion curves from ambient noise data. We obtain an average S-wave velocity (Vs) model of Iceland down to 120 km depth, where two LVZs at depths of 12–22 km and below 55 km are found. The shallow LVZ, whose rationalities are justified using theoretical dispersion curves of certain models to recover themselves, may improve the understanding of the Icelandic average crust. Furthermore, our model shows better representativeness by comparing travel time residuals of the primary wave between observed and synthetic data predicted using different average velocity models. Based on the variations of the Vs gradient, the Icelandic crust with an average thickness of 32 km is divided into the upper crust (0–10 km), middle crust (10–22 km), and lower crust (22–32 km). The asthenosphere starts from the deeper LVZ at 55 km depth, potentially indicating the relatively concentrated melt in this depth range. In this study, crustal LVZs are revealed both in a volcanic active zone and a non-volcanic zone, which may also suggest the LVZ in the average model has more complex origins than the high-temperature zone beneath the central volcanoes. The prevalent thick-cold crustal model of Iceland, considered to rule out the existence of a broad region of partial melt in the crust, also strengthens the possibility of diverse origins. The variations in petrology may also contribute to the crustal LVZ in the average model.
Deep crustal structures of eastern China and adjacent seas revealed by magnetic data

Abstract:Through reduction to the North Pole and upward continuation of the total field magnetic anomalies, we analyze magnetic patterns and spatial distributions of different tectonic blocks and crustal faults in eastern China and adjacent seas. Depths to the Curie isotherms are further estimated from radially averaged amplitude spectra of magnetic data reduced to the pole. Data reductions effectively enhance boundaries of regional tectonic belts, such as the Dabie ultra-high metamorphic belt, the Tanlu Fault, and the Diaoyudao Uplift. Curie depths are estimated at between 19.6 and 48.9 km, with a mean of 31.7 km. The Subei Basin and the south Yellow Sea Basin in the lower Yangtze block show relatively deep Curie isotherms, up to about 35 km in depth, whereas in the surrounding areas Curie depths are averaged at about 25 km. This implies that the lower Yangtze Block has experienced a unique tectonic evolution and/or has unique basement lithology and structures. From a regional perspective, sedimentary basins, such as the Subei Basin, the south Yellow Sea Basin, and the East China Sea Basin, normally show deeper Curie isotherms than surrounding uplifts such as the Diaoyudao Uplift and the Zhemin Uplifts. Curie isotherms also upwell significantly in volcanically active areas such as the Ryukyu Arc and the Cheju Island, confirming strong magmatic and geothermal activities at depth.
Punctiform Breakup and Initial Oceanization in the Central Red Sea Rift

Abstract:The Central Red Sea Rift is a natural laboratory to study the transition from rifting to spreading. Based on new reflection seismic profiles and gravity modeling, we examined the crustal structure, tectonic evolution, breakup mechanism, and future evolution of the Central Red Sea Rift. Along this rift axis, the breakup of continental lithosphere is discontinuous and the oceanic crust is limited to the axial deeps. The punctiform breakup and formation of deeps is assisted by mantle upwelling and topographic uplift, but the nucleation is directly controlled by the normal-fault system. The discontinuities spaced between axial deeps within the relatively continuous central troughs are presently axial domes or highs and will evolve into new deeps with tectonic subsidence. Isolated deeps will grow and connect with each other to become a continuous central trough, before transitioning into a unified spreading center.
Magmato-tectonic Mechanism of Southwest Indian Ridge (49°-50°E) Inferred from Quantitative Morphotectonic Analysis Based on High-Resolution Multibeam Bathymetry

Abstract:Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) is a typical ultra-slow spreading ridge which has been extensively studied based on geophysical survey, geochemical sampling and morphological feature extraction. In this paper, based on the high-resolution multibeam bathymetric data, we extract seven types of topography, including fault, axial rift, axial volcanic ridge (AVR), axial trough, AVR's remnant, volcanic cone and oceanic core complex (OCC). We perform quantitative morphotectonic statistic, verifying the relations between the topography and magmatotectonic mechanism of SWIR 49-50. E. The analyzed results of flank topography show that the average sea-floor depth of the southern flank is shallower than that of the northern flank. The Total Cumulative Length of the faults in the northern and southern flank is 624.6 km and 948.2 km. The number, Total density, Average Length and Maximum Length of the faults in the southern flank are higher than those in the northern flank. An OCC and detachment faults locate in the southern flank. The asymmetry in flank topography indicates the asymmetric spreading mode of the study area. The analyzed results of the axial topography show that AVRs and troughs develop in the rift. The rift is narrower and shallower in the AVR regions, and wider and deeper in the trough regions. These observations support the partition of magmatic and less-magmatic stretching in the study area, and indicate the relation between the variation of rift's depth-width and the magmato-tectonic accretion.
Crust and upper mantle structure of the North China Craton and the NE Tibetan Plateau and its tectonic implications

Abstract:Understanding the Mesozoic–Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the North China Craton (NCC) and the NE Tibetan Plateau (TP) requires detailed knowledge of the lithospheric structure. Using dense regional networks and temporary deployments as well as updated reference models, we obtain the crust and upper mantle structure to 120km depth. Our tomographic results show several major features, which have particular implications for the Weihe–Shanxi rift system (WSRS), deformation of the NE TP, and lithospheric evolution of the NCC. Beneath the WSRS, the crust gradually thickens from south to north, the lithospheric mantle gradually becomes slower, and the mid-lower crustal velocities are lower in the Weihe Rift, where rifting of the WSRS initiated. We suggest that along-strike variations of the lithospheric structures of the WSRS have played an important role in its multistage evolution. A low-velocity zone (LVZ) in the mid-crust beneath the Qilian Orogen is characterized by relatively higher velocities compared to LVZs in other parts of the TP. Thus, coherent lithospheric deformation may occur due to the high viscosity of the LVZ during early plateau growth, causing strong anisotropy to develop. The western NCC (including the Ordos Block and part of the Alashan Block) shows a high-velocity cratonic root extending to the base of our model. In contrast, the lithosphere of the eastern NCC appears to have been completely modified during the Mesozoic through Cenozoic and presents a thin lithosphere of relatively low velocities underlain by hot asthenosphere. We observed significant upper-mantle heterogeneities in the NCC, which may reflect its diachronous lithospheric modification.

Abstract:Although recent research suggests that the morphology and crustal structure of slow–ultraslow-spreading ridges are mainly controlled by melt supply, there is a lack of quantitative understanding of the effect of systematic changes in melt supply on the seafloor spreading state of mid-ocean ridges. In this study, we used bathymetry, free-air gravity anomaly, and sediment thickness data to calculate the residual bathymetry, mantle Bouguer gravity and crustal thickness of the Reykjanes Ridge. According to the gradient of changes in crustal thickness and residual bathymetry along the axis, the influence of melt supply on the spreading state of the Reykjanes Ridge can be divided into three zones: ultra-strong effect zone (0–160 km), strong effect zone (160–610 km), and weak effect zone (610–930 km). In the ultra-strong effect zone, excess melt supply and a higher melting degree result in a strong upwelling and large melt eruption. The change in relative position between the Reykjanes Ridge and the Iceland hotspot results in the spreading state of the Reykjanes Ridge transforming from asymmetric spreading to symmetric spreading. In the strong effect zone, the decrease in melt supply and melting degree weakens the mantle upwelling and enhances the viscosity of the dehydrated mantle layer. Sufficient viscosity of the dehydrated mantle layer forces asymmetric asthenosphere rise along the sloping boundary of the lithosphere, resulting in symmetric spreading. In the weak effect zone, the pattern of magma upwelling becomes a focused magma supply pattern similar to that of the slow–ultraslow-spreading of the mid-ocean ridge, and tectonics dominate the spreading process. The asymmetry of this weak effect zone may be due to the concentration of tectonic and magmatic activity on one flank of the ridge.

A Tilted Broad Plume Underneath the Greenland Cratonic Keels

Abstract:To advance our comprehension of the complex geological history and mantle dynamics in the North Atlantic region, we employ all available broadband seismic data recorded in Greenland to reveal an abnormal mantle transition zone (MTZ) structure. Central and eastern Greenland exhibits depressed 410 and 660 km discontinuities (d410 and d660, respectively) bordering the MTZ, indicative of a substantial thermal anomaly associated with an underlying plume, surpassing the 1,800°C threshold for post‐garnet phase transitions at the d660. Variations in MTZ thickness across Greenland stem from differing temperature anomalies at the d410 and d660, possibly linked to a tilted plume within the MTZ. These findings corroborate geodynamic models, elucidating the interaction between post‐garnet phase transitions and upwelling plumes. The results shed light on the origin of the enigmatic Icelandic hotspot track and its influence on the thermal and lithospheric structures beneath Greenland.

Gravity Modelling of Crustal Architecture and Heterogeneity in the Nansha Block, South China Sea

Abstract:The stretched structure and heterogeneity of the crust of the Nansha Block, the southern continental margin of the South China Sea (SCS), are not well understood. We used published ocean bottom seismic (OBS)/multichannel reflection seismic (MCS) profiles across the Nansha Block to establish five two-dimensional crustal structure models. Using gravity modelling with magnetic anomaly inversion, we obtained the distribution of density and local magnetic susceptibility of the crust. The models show that the distribution of density and thickness of the upper crust in the Nansha Block is uneven, and the thick upper crust is prevalent in the regions close to the continent-ocean transition (COT) showing different characteristics. The interpreted Mesozoic granite blocks and Precambrian rigid basement reflects the heterogeneity in the material composition of the SCS continental margin. Based on the thinning styles of different crustal layers, we suggest that the Nansha Block has a three-layer thinning pattern. The uppermost pre-rift layer was deformed via brittle fractures, the upper crust was sheared by discrete shear zones, and the lower crust experienced ductile deformation. The inherited pre-rift thermal regime, mechanical state, and material composition of the SCS continental margin affected the extensional structure of the crust.

Abstract:We investigate the crustal structure of the Dangerous Ground (South China Sea) through processing and interpretation of coincident wide-angle reflection and refraction seismic data. Continental crust of Dangerous Ground has been moderately thinned, down to 15 km, so that most of the structures accompanying the early opening of the South China Sea from Cretaceous to Miocene have been preserved. Subbasement reflectors as well as refraction velocities image an interpreted dismantled Mesozoic metamorphic unit in the southernmost section of our study area. A rollover structure indicates that the reflective base of the unit was used as a decollement where low-angle normal faults root and blocks rafted. The metamorphic unit is discontinued in a nearby basin located immediately to the north, where the refraction velocity model shows thinning of the crust from 20 to 15 km, with the presence of a 5-km-high mantle dome. In this deeper basin, mass transport deposits are found lying on a strong amplitude basement reflector interpreted as the footwall of an similar to 15 km offset crustal detachment surface that we link down to the mantle dome. We infer that the detachment reactivated an inherited low-angle contact most probably related to the Yanshanian belt. In map view, the reactivated structure forms a half-graben basin oriented NNE-SSW oblique to the generally accepted direction of extension. This orientation follows the general trend of a granitic belt that spanned the South China margin prior to extension, related to the subduction of the Paleo-Pacific.
Highly variable magmatic accretion at the ultraslow-spreading Gakkel Ridge

Abstract:Crustal accretion at mid-ocean ridges governs the creation and evolution of the oceanic lithosphere. Generally accepted models 1,2,3,4 of passive mantle upwelling and melting predict notably decreased crustal thickness at a spreading rate of less than 20 mm year −1 . We conducted the first, to our knowledge, high-resolution ocean-bottom seismometer (OBS) experiment at the Gakkel Ridge in the Arctic Ocean and imaged the crustal structure of the slowest-spreading ridge on the Earth. Unexpectedly, we find that crustal thickness ranges between 3.3 km and 8.9 km along the ridge axis and it increased from about 4.5 km to about 7.5 km over the past 5 Myr in an across-axis profile. The highly variable crustal thickness and relatively large average value does not align with the prediction of passive mantle upwelling models. Instead, it can be explained by a model of buoyant active mantle flow driven by thermal and compositional density changes owing to melt extraction. The influence of active versus passive upwelling is predicted to increase with decreasing spreading rate. The process of active mantle upwelling is anticipated to be primarily influenced by mantle temperature and composition. This implies that the observed variability in crustal accretion, which includes notably varied crustal thickness, is probably an inherent characteristic of ultraslow-spreading ridges.

Digital Models of the Deep Structure of the Earth's Crust in the Eurasian Basin of the Arctic Ocean

Abstract:Digital models of the deep structure of the Earth's crust are developed based on the method of gravity modeling, taking the accumulated geophysical data on the Eurasian Basin of the Arctic Ocean into account. The digital models of the basement relief and sedimentary cover thickness in the Eurasian Basin are calculated on the basis of reinterpretation of depth multi-channel reflection seismic cross-sections and 2D gravity modeling. The digital models of the Moho surface relief and the thickness of the Earth's crust are calculated using the improved 3D gravity modeling method. It is shown that the reason for the deepening of the basement in the Nansen Basin by 1–1.5 km in comparison with the Amundsen Basin is a larger volume of accumulated sedimentary cover in the Nansen Basin, with a similar crustal thickness of ~4.8 km in both basins. The characteristics of the oceanic crust studied on the basis of the obtained digital models reveal a complex 3D variability typical of ultraslow spreading ridges. In the region of the Gakkel Ridge, which was formed at full rates of spreading of less than 12 mm/year, the maximum spread of crustal thicknesses occurs and the tectonic factor dominates over the magmatic one during the accretion of the oceanic crust. This manifests itself in the formation of extended submarine ridges parallel to the amagmatic segments of the ridge.

Abstract:The mantle plumes modify geophysical and geochemical features along and across mid‐ocean ridges. Despite abundant studies of plume‐ridge interaction, few geodynamic studies focus on the Arctic Ocean. The Jan Mayen Hotspot is located at the southern end of the Mohns Ridge and offset by the Jan Mayen Transform Fault, which creates an ideal area to study plume‐ridge‐transform fault interaction at the ultra‐slow spreading ridge. Through analyzing geophysical observations, we revealed that the M factor and crustal thickness decrease and the axial relief increases northeastward along the Mohns Ridge within a distance of ∼370 km to the Jan Mayen Hotspot. Combined with modeling results, the properties of the Jan Mayen plume were estimated, which has a diameter of 75 km, a temperature anomaly of 100°C, and a buoyancy flux of 0.22 Mg/s. Additionally, our model results indicate that the along‐ridge dispersion of plume is slightly enhanced by the transform fault.

Abstract:The North China Craton is a natural laboratory for studying thinning, transformation, and replacement of ancient lithospheres. Its density structure and isostatic state of the crust provide key information for a better understanding of the deep tectonic characteristics and dynamic mechanism. In this study, we analyze observed seismic and gravity/GNSS co-located data, and explore the tectonic characteristics and dynamic significance in the southeastern margin of the North China Craton, using isostatic gravity analysis based on Airy theory and crustal density structure inversions. The results indicate that depth of the Moho interface in the research area ranges between 32 km and 41 km. The crust gradually thins from west to east, and the changing trend of the upper, middle, and lower crust is similar to the Moho interface. There has been significant replacement of the deep mantle and lower crust in the research area, especially where fault zones are located. In addition, the overall area is in a positive isostatic state, indicating that the crust is on an upward trend. The lithosphere on the east side is basically in the state of isostasy, but with a slight tendency for Moho subsidence, indicating a potential thickening of the lithosphere in this region.

Abstract:Qiongdongnan Basin (QDNB), located at the northwestern corner of the South China Sea (SCS), is a key juncture between the extensional tectonic regime in the northern continental margin and the shear tectonic regime in the western continental margin. Analyzing the crustal density structure and tracking the thermodynamic controlling factors are effective approaches to reveal the nonuniform breakup process of the northwestern SCS. Herein, focusing on the obvious tectonic deformation with distinct eastern and western parts in the QDNB, we present the crustal density structures of five profiles and identify the high-density anomaly related to the synrifting mantle underplating and postrifting magmatic intrusions. The crustal density model was constructed from the Bouguer gravity anomaly, ocean bottom seismic profiles, and multichannel seismic reflection profiles. The northern part of QDNB, with normal crustal density, lower surface heat flow of <55 mW/m2, and limited extension factor of 1.25–1.70, is recognized as the initial nonuniform extension continental crust. The mantle underplating beneath the QDNB is identified as a high mantle density of 3.30–3.40 g/cm3 and a high lower crustal density of 2.92–2.96 g/cm3, which is usually recognized by the high-velocity layers in the northeastern margin of SCS. The magmatic intrusions are identified as the high-density bodies ranging from 3.26 g/cm3 at the base to 2.64 g/cm3 at the top, which become stronger from the west to east. The central part of Xisha Trough is featured by the cooling of the heavily thinned lower crust in the final continental rifting stage, which is close to the cold and rigid oceanic crust. Lateral variations in the deep magmatic anomaly should be the crucial factor for the nonuniform breakup process in the northwestern margin of SCS.

Abstract:An integrated study of earthquake seismic tomography in the Golmud-Tanggula Pass (west) and Gonghe-Yushu (east) with profiles traversing the East Kunlun-Qiangtang region of the northern Tibetan Plateau shows that the deep structure of the study region has the following characteristics: (1) from south to north the crustal thickness decreases from 70–75 km to 55–66 km, and the variation range of thickness (10 km) in the western part is smaller than that in the eastern part (20 km); (2) the crust has a sandwich-like structure and the middle crust has a lens-shaped low-velocity layer; (3) above 150 km in depth, the physical states of various terranes are marked by alternation of high-velocity and low-velocity bodies; and (4) the discontinuity of the lithospheric structure reveals the existence of three lithospheric shear faults on the the East Kunlun-Qiangtang region—the South Kunlun-A’nyêmaqên lithospheric shear fault, the Jinsha River lithospheric shear fault and the Xianshui River lithospheric shear fault. It is inferred that the easternward extrusion of northern Tibetan Plateau occurred in the lithospheric range.
The Western Branch of Icelandic Rifts: Morphology and Tectonics

Abstract:Iceland is a unique example where the rift zone of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge emerges at the surface, and whose morphology and tectonic structure differ considerably from typical rift zones of mid-oceanic ridges. The morphology and geodynamics of the western branch of Icelandic rifts are largely controlled by the thermal influence of the Iceland plume that has created the North Atlantic large igneous province. The western branch of Icelandic rifts is characterized by ceasing tectonic and magmatic activity. Overlapping the Eastern Rift Zone, it forms the rotating Hreppar microplate block, which results in a northward decrease of its tectono-magmatic activity. Based on a morphometric analysis of fault scarps, we identified the degree of present-day activity for individual areas of volcanic systems, and determined its variation during Late Quaternary for some areas. The inferences drawn here demonstrate distinct differences in the present-day tectonic structure and dynamics of rift zones and individual volcanic systems within them. The southernmost, transtensional Reykjanes Rift Zone shows tectono-magmatic activity decreasing to the east, which is due to a lower influence exerted by the Reykjanes Ridge that is adjacent to it to the southwest. We observed its gradual eastward diminution, which is probably due to an analogous southward movement of the most active Eastern Rift Zone and to the formation of a new transtensional zone that combines the present-day Reykjanes Rift Zone and South Iceland Seismic Zone. The Western Rift Zone is developing independently of the Reykjanes Rift Zone, having a major extension center in the area of Lake Thingvallavatn. The Holocene manifestations of tectono-magmatic activity in its northern part, as is the case in the Central Rift Zone, are very weak, being mostly due to glacio-isostatic reactivation of older structures. The identified structural inhomogeneities can also be traced in the morphological aspect of rift zones. As an example, the Western and Central Rift Zones typically contain well-developed shield volcanoes that are largely composed of hyaloclastites, while individual lava shield edifices are observed within fissure swarms. In contrast to this, the Reykjanes Rift Zone is characterized by an absence of central volcanoes expressed in topography, and chains of small volcanic vents are observed within fissure swarms.

Abstract:In 2011‒2020 a significant number of seismic lines were carried out in the Eurasian Basin of the Arctic Ocean, which made it possible to study the structure of the junction zones of the Gakkel Ridge with the Nansen and Amundsen basins on a number of profiles. During 2019‒2020 15 sections of the Gakkel Ridge and its rift valley were studied using a sub-bottom profiler and seismo-acoustic profiling. New data on the relief of the basement, as well as the use of databases of bathymetry, gravity, and magnetic anomalies updated at VNIIOkeangeologia, made it possible to calculate the magnetization of the rocks of the Gakkel Ridge along a number of profiles crossing the ridge and to perform model calculations of the structure of the Earth's crust using a complex of geological and geophysical data in the area of the southeastern termination of the ridge. The Gakkel Ridge is a structure that was isolated in the Early Oligocene (34 Ma)–Early Miocene (23 Ma) in the process of radical restructuring of the spreading kinematics in the existing ocean basins in the regions of the North Atlantic and the Arctic. The values of the calculated magnetization of the magnetic layer of the Earth's crust show that this layer is partly composed of oceanic basalts, but mainly of deep-originated rocks, gabbro, and peridotites that were brought to the surface during detachment accompanying spreading. The Laptev Sea continuation of the rift valley of the Gakkel Ridge to the south of the caldera passes above many kilometers of sediments, at the base of which sedimentary rocks of Cretaceous and Late Jurassic age occur.

Abstract:AbstractThe internal structure of oceanic crusts is not well understood due to the limitation of deep drilling. However, that of ophiolites, i.e., on‐land ancient analogs of oceanic lithosphere, could be precisely mapped and measured. The Xigaze ophiolite in Tibet has been regarded as “peculiar”, due to the sheeted sill complex in its upper crust, and non‐sheeted diabase sills/dikes crosscutting its mantle and lower crust, which are geometrically different from the primarily vertical sheeted dike complex. Based on extensive field observations, here we present petrological and geochemical data for the Xigaze ophiolite to decipher the origin of sheeted sill complex and its implications for the construction of oceanic crusts. Diabases in the Xigaze ophiolite could be subdivided into sheeted sills, Group 1 non‐sheeted dikes, and Group 2 non‐sheeted sills, based on their orientations. These diabases cut other lithologies, and hence belong to the latest‐stage products. Based on petrological, geochemical, and structural data, we highlight the important role of detachment fault in the generation of sheeted and non‐sheeted sills. During the formation of oceanic crust, large block exhumation, multi‐stage rotations, and foundering are argued here as key mechanisms for the generation of Xigaze sheeted and non‐sheeted dikes/sills, all of which are in the evolution of detachment fault systems. These processes are also not uncommon for asymmetrical segments at modern slow‐spreading and ultraslow‐spreading ridges, but are rare at symmetrical segments. Due to the evolution of detachment fault, the internal structures of (ultra)slow‐spreading ridges are more complex than those at fast‐spreading ridges.
Shallow Thermal Anomalies and Their Role in the Breakup Evolution Along the Conjugate Margins of the Fram Strait (Svalbard and Eastern North Greenland), Indicated by Low‐Temperature Thermochronology

Abstract:We investigated highly mature sedimentary rocks exposed along both sides of the Fram Strait in the northern North Atlantic using apatite fission track and (U‐Th)/He thermochronology to obtain information on the thermal imprint of rifting and continental breakup processes along a sheared margin. Our data showed that the conjugate margins experienced several heating episodes, which we explain as resulting from heat transfer along segments of the De Geer Fracture Zone, a large continental transform system which connected magmatic centers north and south of the Fram Strait. Heating occurred prior to and during the Eurekan intraplate orogeny, which occupied the position of the present‐day Fram Strait during the Eocene. Heat transfer may have caused or contributed to lithospheric weak zones, which focussed deformation during intraplate orogeny. Movements along the transform fault system continued during the Oligocene, after the end of the Eurekan Orogeny, causing further structural weakening of pre‐existing fault zones. These were exploited during the final continental breakup leading to the opening of the Fram Strait. No unambiguous thermal signature associated with this latest stage of breakup was detected. Our data underline recent studies on the importance of structural inheritance and continental transform faults for the prolonged and complex processes of continental rifting and breakup.

Abstract:Abstract We investigated velocity and anisotropic structure of the crust beneath the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau to better understand its deformation and evolution mechanism. We performed H‚Äźőļ and Pms anisotropy analyses to obtain crustal thickness, Vp/Vs ratio, fast polarization direction, and splitting time from 711 stations, and further conducted quality control using slowness, harmonic and statistical analyses. The Songpan‚ÄźGanzi Block has a large splitting time and a fast polarization direction roughly parallel to the GPS motion and SKS fast direction. It also shows an overall high but complex distribution of Vp/Vs ratio, and large variations in crustal thickness, indicating that crustal deformation is likely caused by crustal shortening and lower crustal flow. The northern Sichuan‚ÄźYunnan Rhombic Block (SYRB) is featured by a thick crust and high Vp/Vs ratio, suggesting that the crust is likely inflated by partial melting lower crustal rocks. The subblock also exhibits a strong azimuthal anisotropy with a splitting time greater than 0.6¬†s. The fast polarization direction aligns with the nearly N‚ÄźS extended direction and rotates clockwise in front of the Emeishan Large Igneous Province (ELIP). The observed anisotropy agrees with aligned amphibole minerals under a simple shear condition, supporting a southward lower crust flow being diverted by the ELIP. Anisotropy measurements on the southern SYRB are less robust and widely scattered, suggesting a deformation mechanism different from the northern SYRB. In addition, the southeastern margin of the Sichuan Basin shows a systematic pattern of crustal anisotropy consistent with a pure shear deformation mechanism.
